The mineral resource potential of the Los Bronces deposit was successfully evaluated by an intense, coordinated field program over a 37-month period (April 1978 - May 1981). This project was part of a much larger study to determine the economic feasibility of expanding the open-pit, mine-mill operation 10-fold to 80 kt/d (88,000 stpd). The resource project included more than 120 km (74 miles) of core drilling and 64 km (40 miles) of drill rig access way construction under adverse topographic and climatic conditions, detailed geological mapping, and other related activities. The Los Bronces deposit is composed of an earlier mineralized porphyry-type body intruded in part by a large complex of mineralized hydrothermal breccia pipes. The mineralization is hosted by intrusive and extrusive igneous rocks. Various stages of erosion, oxidation, leaching, and supergene enrichment of copper are present. Drill hole indicated geologic reserves are estimated at 1.3 Gt (1.4 billion st), averaging 0.81% copper and 0.016% molybdenum at a cutoff grade of 0.6% copper equivalence decreasing to 0.25% over the life of the mine. Trace amounts of silver are also present.

Since the advent of longwall mining systems in the United States, mine operators are increasingly relying on methane drainage techniques to supplement the ventilation system. The most commonly used technique is the vertical gob borehole. The number and spacing of vertical gob boreholes per panel is generally based on experience and underground conditions. To design a more efficient methane drainage systems, mine operators must accurately determine methane gas produced. Thus, mine operators must monitor gas flow and methane gas concentration on every vertical gob borehole on active panels at least once or twice during each 8-hr shift. As the mine grows, it is possible to have more than one operating longwall and many vertical gob boreholes. Thus, daily visits to each vertical gob borehole site can become very time consuming. During weekends when methane gas concentrations typically drop because there is no mining activity, borehole sites may not be visited. To obtain accurate gas flow data, a gob borehole monitoring system was designed and constructed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM). Gas flow, methane gas concentration, gas temperature, barometric pressure, and vacuum pressure of the exhaust fan are the parameters collected by the system. The system also includes circuitry for automatic shutdown of the exhaust fan and an alarm system before an unsafe condition is created. Telemetry components were also integrated into the system to allow for transmission of borehole data to the mine office. As a test, the system was installed and operated on a vertical gob borehole for six months. Test results indicated that intermittent measurements with hand-held instruments from vertical gob boreholes were always higher than gas flows measurements made by the gob gas analyzer system. This paper describes the system components, operational characteristics, and the results of the test program.

BACKGROUND Diesel exhaust is an animal carcinogen, although evidence of the carcinogenicity in humans is "limited". (World Health Org. , 1989) Of the eight cohort studies in the 19808, five found an increased risk for lung cancer among workers who may have been exposed to diesel exhaust (RR from 1.3-1.5, SMR from 101-132). (Howe, et al., 1983) Only two studies accounted for smoking indirectly. Of the ten case-control studies in the 1980's, eight reported increased risk of lung cancer among those populations purportedly exposed to diesel exhaust. (Benhamou, et al. , 1988) All but one of these adjusted for smoking and other occupational exposures. The odds ratios ranged from 1.2 to 2.1. In two of these studies, miners experienced a two to three fold risk. (Benhamou, et al., 1988) Bladder cancer has also been linked to diesel exhaust in cohort and case-control studies. Excesses of approximately 50% were observed among truck drivers in studies by NCI. (Hoar, et al., 1985) In the National Bladder Cancer Study, risks for truck drivers rose with duration of employment. A study by NIOSH in Ohio also found an excess of bladder cancer among truck drivers, particularly among those with 20 or more years of employment. (Steenland, et al, 1987) Despite the large number of studies in which the relation between diesel exhaust exposure and lung cancer has been examined, exposure to diesel exhaust has been quantitatively estimated only in the studies of railroad workers and truck drivers. (Woskie, et al., 1988) The excess lung cancer risk experienced by workers in these two occupational groups was modest, ranging from 40 to 90% for those with long-term employment. However, diesel exhaust exposure among railroad workers and truck drivers is lower than that seen among miners. Several markers of diesel exhaust have been utilized in these studies. Diesel exhaust is a complex mixture of particulates, vapors and gases. One group of these gases, the nitrogen oxides, react with polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, forming mutagenic and possible carcinogenic nitrated derivatives. (World Health Organization, 1989) For this reason, and because it is easy to measure and analyze, NO, was frequently used as a marker of diesel exhaust exposure. As part of the Garshick (Garshick, et al., 1988) study of railroad workers, Woskie measured NO, exposures of 477 railroad workers. Shotcrete is used both in mining and tunnelling for supporting rock. Both dry and wet processes are used for shotcreting, and each produces good quality concrete. Thick shotcrete layers function as a concrete arch supporting loose rock. Thin layers prevent relative movements between the blocks of rock due to the fine concrete in the cracks and joints. No progressive fallouts occur since key blocks are kept in place. Rockbolts are often used together with shotcrete in order to create an arch around the tunnel making the rock to support itself. Shotcrete is sprayed either manually or by means of mechanized equipment. The aim is to spray required the layer thickness in one pass and with a minimum amount of rebound. Sprayed layers should also be as even as possible. The tip of the nozzle should be moved in circular movements. The shotcrete should be sprayed at a right angle to the rock surface; the optimum distance from the nozzle to the application surface must be found by experiment. In a mine shotcreting forms a materials handling system which includes batching, transporting and the actual shotcreting. The equipment used vary depending on the spraying method, mining conditions and the location of the mine. Shotcreting is performed with a purpose-designed unit in most cases where operation is mechanized. The shotcreting unit consists of a spraying machine with a hose and a nozzle, an additive system, a manipulator and a mobile carrier with all the necessary controls and accessories. The key element of the unit is the shotcreting manipulator which holds and guides the nozzle as required. The manipulators currently in use are hydraulically operated, and their remote controlled booms are also often called robots. These manipulators have enabled users to increase their output capacities, to remove the operator away from unsafe areas and from the influence of dust and rebound. Furthermore, they improve the shotcrete quality and reduce shotcreting costs.

Voluminous deposits of commercial-grade phosphate occur in sedimentary strata in a 350,000 km2 (135,000 mi2) area of the middle Rocky Mountains of North America known as the Western Phosphate Field. The Permian marine strata that host the phosphate were deposited on the western margin of the North American craton and subsequently deformed, first by folding and thrust faulting of the Laramide orogeny, and then by Cenozoic Basin and Range block faulting. Carbonate fluorapatite is the primary phosphorus-bearing mineral. Organic matter is abundant in some strata, and both biogenic and non-biogenic pyrite are also present. Certain strata are enriched in several trace elements, especially in arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), molybdenum (Mo), selenium (Se), vanadium (V), uranium (U), and zinc (Zn). Phosphate has been mined from the Western Phosphate Field for nearly 100 years. Phosphate mining and processing constitutes the largest mineral industry of Idaho, producing more than $600 million in processed mineral value in 1997. Resource management agencies, phosphate producers, and others are concerned about the release of Se from phosphate mine wastes, especially at Maybe Canyon, and the potential effects that Se and other trace elements may have on the environment and on human health. U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Mineral Resources Team scientists initiated a multidisciplinary study of the Permian Phosphoria Formation and related rocks in the south- eastern Idaho sector of the Western Phosphate Field in response to a request by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Studies to date reveal that Se is present in several phases, including native Se, and in an as yet unidentified form, possibly an organo-Se compound. Selenium is also present in pyrite and sphalerite. Selenium concentrations range from 1.2 to greater than 1,000 parts per million (ppm) in samples collected from exposures of the Meade Peak Phosphatic Shale Member of the Phosphoria Formation (Meade Peake) at Enoch Valley. The results suggest that Se concentrations vary spatially across strata and with depth, perhaps comparable to spatial variations of phosphate and organic carbon concentrations throughout the Western Phosphate Field demonstrated in previous studies. Some Se-enriched strata may be of adequate dimension to allow selective extraction during mining. Such units could be handled separately from the main ore process or waste streams and isolated in order to reduce the potential for release of Se to the environment

After nearly five years of economic hardship, the world copper industry is, in our opinion, about to enter a period of considerable strength. This opinion is based on three main propositions, namely: 1) there are a number of reasons, both general-economic and industry-specific why copper demand is likely to perform significantly, more strongly in the 1980's than in the 1970's; 2) the virtual cessation of investment in new facilities, especially at the mine level, over the past years makes it physically impossible for capacity to expand as fast as demand in the mid-1980's; and 3) there is much less "excess" inventory available than most analysts believe. If we are correct in these assumptions, then the implication is that copper prices will climb up to, and possibly beyond, the cost-justified price level. Combined with general inflation, this suggests a price in excess of $2/pound by 1985 or roughly treble the 1978 average.

Production dozing of cast material is a cost effective method of improving dragline or mobile equipment overburden removal. Yet dozer productivity is reduced during the part of the process that requires the dozers to cut material away from the highwall. One solution is to use a hydraulic excavator to remove this material and throw it into a windrow for the dozers. By freeing up the dozers for more productive work the overall system productivity increases 25% and cost per yard is reduced by up to 10%. Dozer fleet sizing can be determined to match a specific production schedule or can be sized to balance with an excavator’s production.

The platinum group metals (PGM's) are typically recovered by flotation, smelting of the flotation concentrate to matte, and matte leaching. Concentrates too low grade to be processed economically by the conventional process require a new treatment route. PLATSOL, a new pressure leach process, was developed for the Northmet deposit and dissolves in one step base and precious metals (PGM's and gold). Various options exist to recover all pay metals from the leach liquor. The preferred option to date involves a solid-liquid separation, followed by sulphide precipitation of gold and the PGM's, and copper solvent extraction using commercial solvent extractants. This paper briefly summarises the process and the effect of the main leach parameters. Application of the PLATSOL process to various feedstocks is also presented.

This paper considers simulation of truck dispatching systems using maximum expected production of the truck-shovel system as the measure of performance. Two analysis methods are utilized: multiple comparisons with the best (MCB) and the combination of MCB with the variance reduction technique known as common random numbers (CRN). These two techniques are compared via simulation experiments. Results show that the combined procedure of MCB with CRN is the superior tool to use to reduce the total number of replications needed to ensure the specified probability of correct selection from a number of systems. In this case study, MCB with CRN reduced the variance by 29% and the number of required replications by 48%. Also, the MCB with CRN procedure narrowed the confidence interval by 18%.

The Bullfrog Mine is an underground goldmine that uses the underhand-cut-and-fill mining method. The portal was established on June 18, 1991. Mining is expected to be completed by the summer of 1999. This paper starts by discussing what it took to get from nothing to 2000 tons-per-day backfill, and ends with a hindsight commentary on things that did and did not help.

It has never been easy to finance within mining sector. Leasing may be an alternative source of finance for mining investments. Leasing is acquiring the right of usage for an asset for a definite period of time without having the ownership of it. In this study, a model for analyzing the lease financing opportunities for mining investments under risk and suitable for establishing a satisfactory leasing policy for both lessee and lessor is developed. Using the model, it is possible to obtain an expected equilibrium lease amount acceptable by both lessor and lessee and also the expected range of the equilibrium lease amount as a decision tool. First the existing leasing policies are mentioned, then the developed model is described. A case study is presented to illustrate the use of the model in establishing a leasing policy. In conclusion, the usefulness of the model is discussed.

The Macraes Gold Project, operated by Gold and Resource Developments NL, engaged Minproc Limited to assist with the evaluation of a pressure oxidation circuit, this being the key component of a recovery enhancement project. The initial study gave sufficient confidence in the process to enter into project execution. The project is the first to license Newmont Mining Corporation's pressure oxidation technology, which aims to improve gold recovery from the carbonaceous sulfidic flotation concentrate. This paper outlines the fundamental chemistry of the process followed by a description of the plant that was ultimately installed. A summary of the commissioning is given together with an overview of the production results for the first three months of operation. The project ramp-up was rapid, with design temperature and throughput being achieved within days of hot commissioning. Gold recoveries have exceeded expectations and the project has increased the nominal gold output at Macraes from 110,000 oz/y to 150,000 oz/y. Ongoing plant optimisation and problem solving, mainly associated with scale formation, is discussed.

The first use of graphite is lost in the mists of time. It was used by primitive man to make drawings on the walls of caves and by the Egyptians to decorate pottery. As early as 1400 AD graphite crucibles were being made in the Haffnerzell District of Bavaria. Through the Middle Ages graphite was confused with other minerals, especially galena and molybdenite. Two common names that are still being used for the mineral are plumbago, meaning lead-silver, and black lead. The latter name implied that graphite is either composed of lead or at least contains a large percentage of it. Gessner is credited with having recognized it as a separate mineral in 1565, but its composition was not determined until 1779, when Scheele demonstrated that graphite oxidized to carbon dioxide, thus proving its carbon constitution. In 1789, Werner named it graphite from the Greek word graphein, meaning to write. The United States has long relied on foreign countries for its graphite supplies. This reliance has been due more to the lack of suitable domestic graphites than to any particular preference for buying minerals overseas. Sri Lankan graphites were imported as early as 1820, and Madagascar graphites have been imported since the properties on that island were opened up about a hundred years later. Mexico has long supplied the United States with most of its requirements for amorphous graphite.

This presentation will describe the underground excavation at the Bad Creek Pump Storage project. It consists of approximately 3,650 m of various size tunnels ranging from 4.2 m to 9.0 m finished diameter, a powerhouse cavern 45 m high by 135 m long by 22.5 m wide, and 422 m of 9 m diameter shaft. A total of 350,000 m of rock will be excavated, hauled, and placed in a submerged wier. Temporary rock support consisting of shotcrete and/or rockbolts is installed as required.

The Hydro-Jex technology has been used by Newmont Mining Corp. on the gold heap leach pads on the Carlin Trend - Nevada for three years to recover the inventory gold and change the chemistry in the pads. This research and development patented process is complete with the resultant data presented. Information on drill sampling, geophysical surveying, followed by leach pad stimulation with impacts on solution chemistry and gold recovery are discussed. Can this technology be used to rinse and close heap leach pads faster with reduced pump energy costs and improved recovery?

Lost foam casting is a process in which a polymeric material is formed into the shape of the part to be cast. Parts that are more complex are fabricated by simply gluing several patterns together. The pattern is then coated with a refractory material consisting of a mineral mixture and binders. Finally, hot metal is poured into the pattern, evaporating the expanded polystyrene and taking the shape of the coating shell. Prior to casting, a significant number of the patterns are damaged and inevitably landfilled. In this study, a process was developed for the recovery of expanded polystyrene from the coating and glue contaminants. The process consists of shredding, impact comminution, size classification and pneumatic separation. It is successful in separating up to 97% of the contaminants, while recovering 95% of the polystyrene. Key words: Casting, Lost foam process, Expanded polystyrene recovery

Divided opinions concerning dredging-permit locations and boating uses on the Kansas River in northeastern Kansas led to a study of the recreation potential on the river by a legislatively mandated interagency group (five agencies) that included the Kansas Geological Survey (KGS). In addition, the KGS conducted its own study of the river corridor, encompassing the development, geology, and economic resources of the corridor (Brady and others, 1998). The corridor area is 12 mi wide and 140 mi long (171 river miles). Included in the study was the potential impact of restric¬tions to river dredging. The Kansas River and its floodplain in northeastern Kansas are underlain by Lower Permian and Upper Pennsylvanian limestones and shales. The river and its floodplain are the major sources of sand and gravel for northeastern Kansas, and the limestones along the river bluffs supply crushed stone and building stone. The population of the 10-county area bordering the river has grown by 20% since 1980, and now comprises nearly 40% of the state's population (U.S. Bureau of the Census, 1996). Projections (Floerchinger, 1992) indicate close to 50% of the Kansas population will reside in these counties by 2025, with a continued increase in the demand for aggregates. Factors such as floodplain width, price and availability of land, and overburden ratios tend to favor river dredging on the lower part of the river, and floodplain or pit dredging on the upper portion. The use of alternate sources of sand and gravel such as the Missouri and Arkansas Rivers would increase sand prices due to transportation costs to much of the 10-county area. In 1996, river and pit dredges along the Kansas River supplied more than 3 million tons of sand and gravel valued at about $8 million to northeastern Kansas. As a result of its study, the KGS had concerns with the idea of large recreation zones on the river that excluded river dredging in areas of presently large population and projected population growth. This controversial issue is likely to recur elsewhere.

Fractal theory was horn in the mid-1970s. Since then, its application has been spreading day by day, from mathematics and geology to areas such as geophysics, physics and material sciences. In this paper, fractal models are developed to characterize particle size distribution and surface area. Theoretical formulas are derived for the computation of fractal dimensions D (size) and D[s] (surface area). The models developed are applied using experimental data of particle size distribution and surface area obtained from the Microtrac Particle Size Analyzer for dust processed by several size reduction devices. The theoretical models and the experimental data are found in good agreement. The fractal dimensions obtained are D = 1.350 to 1.770 and D[s] = 2.058 to 2.584 for fine coal dust particles (< 15 µm) produced by various size reduction mechanisms. The physical meaning of these fractal dimensions is also related to the dust generation processes.

HISTORIACAL INTRODUCTION Mineral processing has three principle branches, to quote Taggart, "Ore Dressing, which comprises the methods of separation of solids in inorganic crude by means which do not affect substantial chemical change; Extractive Metallurgy, which utilizes chemical reactions for separations of constituents from solids in inorganic crude; and, Fuel Technology, which employs both physical and chemical methods for separating and rearrangement of liquid gaseous and solid components in crude oil and natural gas, tar sands, shale oil, or coal." The scope of this handbook covers the first two classifications, that is, "ore dressing" and "extractive metallurgy," which have been combined in one term: "mineral processing." For a brief history of the development of mineral processing, one could well refer to the Introduction, Sec. I of the Handbook of Mineral Dressing by Taggart, Froth Flotation, Principles of Mineral Dressing by Gaudin, and the original Richard&apos;s Ore Dressing, volume No. 1, first published in 1903-1905. In these references and the references given in them a coverage of the history of "ore dressing" can be found and studied at the reader&apos;s leisure. For the history of extractive metallurgy as well as ore dressing, the bibliography in General References, taken from a History of Ex¬tractive Metallurgy by F. Habashi, will give a good background for those who are interested in more detail on the history of metallurgy in general. Mineral processing covers a very wide field as is illustrated by the topics discussed in Part II of this handbook and dates back to the early history of man which started with the production and use of native minerals such as gold, silver, copper, mercury, and meteoric iron which were washed or picked from deposits on the surface of the earth and worked because of their malleability. Later, melting was discovered and then it was possible to cast objects of these metals, excluding mercury. The discovery of a method for reducing the metal¬lic oxide probably was developed from melting fragments of oxides or roasted sulfides with charcoal, so that the native metal could be produced in simple blast furnaces such as are used today in rural parts of Spain, China, and elsewhere. Eventually, it was learned that iron could be readily worked when hot, which resulted in its replacing bronze for tools, weapons, and cutlery.
