Adequate ventilation is a main concern if Lockerby Mine near Sudbury is to be expended. This study investigate a two-fold problem: (1) the new pressure and volume requirements of the main fans due to the theoretical. deepening of the mine, and (2) the effect of the natural ventilation pressure on the main fans. Field data was analyzed with the aid of a newly developed network simulation program, VNETPC Version 3. 0. The density change throughout the mine is accounted for by performing all computations at reference density. Results of the investigation indicate that the existing fan system must be supported by three to five additional underground fans as well, the density effect is significant. The Mt Todd Gold Project is located 300km to the south of Darwin in the Northern Territory of Australia. The identified resource comprises 46 million tonnes at 1. 65g/t using a 1. 0g/t cut-off ( 50 million short tonnes at 0.05oz/st). The resource is open to the north and at depth. Mineralisation comprises easterly dipping sheeted quartz/sulphide veins, typically 10 to 20 millimetres in thickness, hosted by hornsfelled greywackes. The majority of the ore body is primary ore with only 10% classified as oxide ore. Early testwork showed that the ore was not suitable for heap leaching, giving only 50% recovery at a -3mm crush size. Acceptable recoveries were obtained at a P80 of 75 micron. However, the ore is extremely hard.

The rare earth magnet has a good performance and the production is increasing year by year. Two types of rare earth magnets are presently made as industrial products. One is a Nd-Fe-B intermetallic compound magnet and the other is a Sm-Co alloy magnet. The mixed scraps of Nd-Fe-B intermetallic compound and Sm-Co alloy are sometimes produced in the step of production. Therefore it is desired that a recycling system of mixed rare earth magnet scraps should be established. In the present study, hydrochloric acid leaching of the oxidizing roasted products of Nd-Fe-B intermetallic compound and Sm-Co alloy and solvent extraction of metals such as Nd, Sm, etc. are tested to obtain the fundamental data for the hydrometallurgical treatment of the mixed rare earth magnet scraps.

The National Steel Pellet Company is owned by National Steel Corporation, managed by the M. A. Hanna Company and located near the town of Keewatin in northern Minnesota. Annually, the concentrator processes 15.24-Mt (15.0 million It) crude taconite with eight 8.2-m diameter by 5.5-m long (27 ft x 18 ft) wet semi-autogenous (SAG) mills to produce 4.57-Mt (4.50 million It) of iron ore pellets. To improve operating costs and primary mill grinding circuit efficiencies, a task force on liners was formed with the operation, maintenance and engineering staff at N.S.P.C. along with the local supplier of mill liners. Results of the task force recommendations since 1980 along with improvements made in the primary circuit operations, are presented. Mill Liner Design and Metallurgy Changes The primary mill liner task force was formed in 1977. Its function was to improve the operating costs and milling efficiencies of the ten 8.2-m x 5.5-m (27 ft x 18 ft) wet SAG mills that were operating at the time. The SAG mills are driven by two 3500 HP motors drawing a total of 5450 kW at 76% of critical speed.

Introduction The depth of open-pit mines continues to increase. The typical designed depth for large quarries is now in the 300 to 600 m (1,000 to 2,000 ft) range, with some quarries even reaching depths of 700 to 800 m (2,300 to 2,600 ft). The cost of handling material from such deep mines can be 60% to 70% of the total cost. The capacity of using a cyclic means of transport, such as trucks or skip hoists, continues to drop as the depth of the mine increases. In addition to the problem of maintaining relatively low slope angles for haul roads, increases in environment pollution and increased fuel consumption make the use of trucks ineffective below 100 to 150 m (300 to 500 ft). In handling large quantities of bulky materials, i.e., more than 15 to 20 Mt/a (16 to 22 million stpy), under fixed terminal points, belt conveyors are preferable in almost in all cases. An exception is when the lump size of the load is too high for the conveyor to handle. Belt conveyors in mines can handle loads having a maximum lump size of no more than 250 to 300 mm (10 to 12 in.). The use of a movable crusher prior to the belt conveyor in an open-pit mine would make the process very expensive. Such an operation could not compete with truck haulage on a cost basis. Belt-car conveyor The main factor that restricts the lump size for conventional belt conveyors is collision impacts between the load-carrying belt and idlers. These impacts are completely eliminated in the belt-car conveyor, which was previously described by Mulukhov (1977). The unique feature of the conveyor is that the load-carrying belt is supported by moving cars. Each car consists of a troughed cross strap that supports the belt with the load and two rollers, on which the cars move along upper and lower rails. Cars are connected by two endless chains revolving over sprockets. The system uses conventional drive pulleys, tail pulleys and return idlers. There are no fasteners between the carrying belt and the car cross straps. The conveyor belt simply drives the cars along by the force of friction between the belt and the straps. A belt-car conveyor was first installed in 1970 at the Karatau mining operation in Kazakhstan. The system was an elevating conveyor with an inclination of 20° and was located on the final part of the truck haul road. The conveyor transferred blasting phosphate ore from the quarry to the crushing plant. A bunker was mounted between the trucks and the conveyor. The maximum lump size was typically 1,200 mm (48 in.). However, there were some lumps as large as 1,500mm (60 in.), which was greater than even the belt width (Fig. 1). Because the prototype belt-car conveyor was intended only for industrial trails, it had a relatively short length of about 50 m (160 ft). Nevertheless, the conveyor yielded a substantial profit over the cost of truck haulage. Naturally, the first question one might ask is why such a system is not now widely used. The reason was the further development of a huge transporting complex for the whole quarry at the base of the belt-car conveyor. After successful industrial trials from 1971 through 1973, which demonstrated the systems engineering feasibility, the State Planning Committee of the USSR included the development of the belt-car conveyor in its plan for the development of the national economy. However, mistakes were made. First, a single organization was not in charge of the development. Second, a plant that was not specialized in belt conveyors was put in charge of the design and manufacturing of the conveyor system. In addition, the crusher was installed before the stacker, which negated the major advantages of the belt-car conveyor. The Dead Sea is the only relatively large body of surface water having bromide concentrations comparable to those in the brines of the Smackover Formation in Arkansas. The Dead Sea, like the Smackover brines, contains a great deal of calcium and is very low in sulfate and iodide. The relationships between potassium, divalent cations, and chloride indicate that over 20 percent of the bromide in the Dead Sea is derived from some source other than by the evaporation of sea water. A similar type of study of the Smackover brines in Arkansas indicates that approximately 60 percent of the bromide has been derived from some source other than sea water. Both the Dead Sea and Smackover brines are very low in iodide suggesting that the excess bromide has not been derived from organic matter. The origin of the excess bromide is probably the same for both of these brines, but the source of this bromide remains unknown.

A drill system configuration capable of working in the arctic offshore environment was developed to evaluate the placer gold resources contained in the glacio-fluvial sediments offshore Nome, Alaska. This system is capable of working on the shore fast ice during the winter months and is deployed on a drill ship during the summer. Transfer of the drill between its summer and winter configurations is accomplished with a minimum of modification to the design. The system is designed around the Becker drill. This percussive, reverse circulation drill is capable of penetrating the indurated glacial sediments present in the offshore Nome environment. This drill has operated effectively to depths in excess of 50 m (164 ft) below sea level. Since early 1987, in excess of 2000 holes have been drilled using the system. The drill system often operates in extreme weather conditions. It has averaged approximately 10 holes a day of drill production. The ore reserves defined during these drilling programs have resulted in the recovery of more than 70,000 oz (2.18 t) of gold to date, by the mining vessel Bima.

Under conditions of high methane content in the seams and the descending of exploitation to greater depths, methane hazard control is becoming more and more difficult. This is due both to the amount of methane released and to the technical possibilities of diluting and capturing it. The removal of excess methane from mine workings only by means of the ventilating current has become a problem. Therefore many countries designate large sums of money for research work in the field of controlling dangerous methane accumulations and for introducing this control into mining practice. In Poland the Central Mining Institute is leading in this field. Its Safety-in-Mines Institute, Barbara Experimental Mine in cooperation with collieries has recently carried out interesting investigations on the distribution of methane concentrations in gobs behind the front of longwalls mined with caving.

The role of ZnS04 in activation of sphalerite (ZnS) and deactivation of lead-activated sphalerite has been investigated. Adsorption of metallic ions at the solid-solution interface, electro kinetic results for sphalerite under different chemical conditions, and thermodynamic calculations were used to elucidate the mechanisms involved. It is shown that flotation response of sphalerite in absence of activators is rather weak and that adsorption of ethyl xanthate on the mineral mainly electrostatic in nature. Zinc sulfate is found to activate the mineral but only in a narrow acidic pH range. This is attributed to the increase of zeta potential as well as the possible increase in amount of negatively charged bulk precipitated zinc xanthate. Lead ions activate sphalerite in a wide pH range and the lead activated mineral assumes a flotation behavior similar to that of galena (PbS). However, addition of ZnS04 depresses the lead-activated sphalerite by replacing lead ions at the mineral/solution interface.

Tafel curve technique and leaching tests have been applied to study the kinetics of gold leaching with thiosulfate. Results show that cupric ions and ammonia play the part of catalysts in the leaching of gold with thiosulfate. The activation energy of gold dissolution is calculated as 27.99 KJ/mol in the absence of both cupric ions and ammonia. However, the energy is reduced to 15.54 KJ/mol in a solution of 0.01 mol/L Cu (NH3)2 4* and 0. 5moVL total ammonia. The reaction order of Cu (NH,) g is one in the range of 0.001~0.1mol/L. These results support the electrochemical-catalytic mechanism pro- posed by the authors and explains the behavior of cupric ion and ammonia (Jiang Tao, et al., 1993)

While processing zinc cakes with application of Weltz-technology silver remains unrecovered and goes into clinker. In order to prevent it the elaboration of effective silver recovery methods from zinc cakes before their weltzing becomes necessary. A combined method of zinc cakes treatment with leaching and flotation in a closed water circuit has been worked out. The technological scheme envisages the use of sulphgydril collectors in combination and comprises a series of consecutive operations: leaching, filtration, precipitation(cementing) and flotation. Total silver recovery is approximately 94%. The technology elaborated has been realized in a project by which the construction of a new shop is under way now.

Several bauxite feeds and residue sands and muds, produced by Bayer plants in the US and over-seas, were fractionated using dry and wet magnetic separators. The magnetic sand fractions typically contained about 50 to 60 wt % Fe2O3 and the bulk of the radioactivity in the sands. The muds are more difficult to process, but some fractionation is possible using a combination of classification and magnetic separation techniques. Among the mud samples, higher radiation levels are often associated with the less magnetic fractions. Bauxite is more easily fractionated using dry magnetic separation. Much of the radioactivity in bauxite appears to concentrate in the sand and mud residuals.

Promoting a strong safety culture requires that the significance of unsafe acts be emphasized. This can be achieved vividly by accurate recreation of unsafe actions in the workplace, demonstrating explicitly how they resulted in a fatality or significant injury. Visual reconstructions of incidents can be realized today on personal computers. The approach described in this paper uses readily available PC software and hardware and results in output that can be presented to the intended audience using a variety of delivery methods. An actual incident involving a surface mining operation is reconstructed using Virtual Reality techniques. Use of the visualization approach to accident reconstruction as a training tool is discussed.

Bacteria, algae and fungi react to heavy metals in their environment by immobilizing, mobilizing and/or transforming metals. Microorganisms carry out these changes by (1) precipitating metals outside of the microbial cell, (2) binding and complexing metals to the outside of the microbial cell's protective coating, (3) accumulating metals inside of the microbial cell, or (4) transforming metals by oxidation, reduction, methylation or demethylation. Most of these mechanisms are operative in constructed aerobic and anaerobic wetlands for metal's remediation. Several more advanced biotechnologies for metal's removal from aqueous streams have been introduced, but have not been widely accepted commercially.

Compound lognormal distributions serve as new generalized distribution laws for analyzing and estimating ore value distributions or related properties such as the average ore grade. These models are an alternative to the well known lognormal distribution. They are the translation of general geological constraints on the genesis of the deposit cumulated in suitable statistical properties. In this paper a maximum likelihood framework is established for estimating the parameters of such laws or parameter functions thereof. It is shown that under certain conditions maximum likelihood estimation is accurate and efficient in estimating the mean value even when relatively few samples are available. The method is based on a numerical maximization of the likelihood function of these models given the data. Confidence limits on these estimates are set up using resampling techniques such as the bootstrap. By this a complete methodology is presented for inference on ore grade distributions such as is shown in an example of gold data from the Merriespruit mine (South Africa) and the diamond size distribution of the Bougban deposit (Guinea).

Cessation of open pit mining in 1996 at the McLaughlin hot-spring type gold deposit has resulted in the development of two pit lakes that will be managed as permanent lakes with a total storage capacity of 10,000 acre-feet. The south pit lake developed from alkaline ground water infiltration and had an initial pH of 7.2. It contained high concentrations of boron and chloride, indicating that it consisted of a mix of meteoric and evolved connate waters. Numerous carbon dioxide gas vents were present initially in the shallow south pit lake, but as the pit lake increased in depth, gas venting ceased and carbon dioxide is retained in the lower layer of the chemically stratified lake. Continued increase of dissolved carbon dioxide in the lower layer increases the potential for a limnic eruption. A chemocliie occurs at a depth of 47 m. The upper layer of the lake has lower pH, temperature, and conductivity than the lower layer. Effluent from ore and waste rock piles directed into the south pit lake has contributed to high levels of antimony, arsenic, cobalt, copper, mercury, nickel, and zinc. Iron oxyhydroxide is abundant in mine effluent that enters the pit lake and adsorption onto this phase has lowered the arsenic and antimony concentrations. The north pit lake formed primarily from winter surface runoff. The acidic water, pH 4.56, initially had high concentrations of cobalt, mercury, and nickel derived from weathering products of pyritized serpentinite and shales. Buffering by wall rocks has established a slightly alkaline pH of 7.62. The concentrations of trace metals in the north pit lake have substantially decreased due to continued dilution of the lake by surface runoff and remediation of parts of the pit walls that have been covered by backfill.

Santa Fe Pacific Gold, headquartered in Albuquerque, NM is expanding its operation at the Twin Creeks Mine in Nevada. The $250-million sulfide expansion project, including the Sage Mill, is under construction and is 80% complete. Also, additional mining equipment has been purchased to haul the sulfide ore to the mill. With the expansion, employment at Twin Creeks is expected to reach approximately 970 people by the end of 1996. Santa Fe Pacific Gold now owns and operates three gold mines in the United States and is involved in several other gold projects. The three currently operating mines are the Twin Creeks, Mesquite and Lone Tree mines. The Mesquite Mine is located in California’s Imperial Valley. Lone Tree is located 55 km (34 miles) southeast of Winnemucca, NV. The company’s total gold production from these operations is expected to be in the range of 26.3 to 26.6 t (845,000 to 855,000 oz) in 1996. This compares to a total production of about 124 kg (4,000 oz) for the company in 1989. Production costs range from $6.90to $7.25/g ($215 to $225/oz). At the end of 1995, the company reported proven and probable reserves of 556.7 t(17.9 million oz) of gold.

Although mineral commodities used to play and still play a very crucial role in the development of civilization over the centuries, their extraction, transportation, transformation and use are at present sources of great concern in terms of sustainability. Some of the most discussed environmental problems are in fact closely related to the utilization of minerals as materials and fossil fuels. The paper analyses the origins of sustain-ability weakness of mineral supply through Environmental Economics models, which have interpreted the phenomena of pollution and non-renewable resource depletion as a market failure. Conventional market tools have proved to be unable to perform an optimal allocation of those resources that are priceless or have open access. An external intervention is needed in order to reduce the excessive exploitation of environmental and natural resources. Some of the solutions proposed by policymakers and subsequently implemented by governments are briefly considered and the achieved results are discussed. In several cases the public intervention, where the attempt was to restore the sustainability conditions, has failed. Restrictive environmental protection regulations have resulted in severe limitations to the mining activity, without, on the other hand, achieving the expected results in terms of sustainability. Some of these regulations instigate unfair international competition practices among those producers who do care about the environment, but who have high production costs, and those who supply cheap raw material but whose low costs hide heavy environmental impacts. Nowadays, most of the world?s supply of minerals is being produced in developing countries, with severe global environmental impacts. As effective tools for monitoring the problem, sustainable development indicators could be used by policymakers to duly associate the comprehensive environmental impacts for each mining product, depending on its origin and extraction history.

The Mining Foundation of the Southwest will hold its 15th annual American Mining Hall of Fame Awards banquet on Saturday, Dec. 6,1997 in Tucson, AZ, preceeding the Arizona Conference of SME. The Mining Foundation's Hall of Fame, located in Tucson, recognizes outstanding contributions to the mining industry by individuals and industry partners. A permanent display of honoree vitae is located at the Arizona Historical Society at 949 E. Second St. in Tucson. Each year, one living award recipient and up to two honorees from mining history are chosen by the Hall of Fame committee and the board of governors of the Mining Foundation. In 1989, the Mining Foundation also initiated a Medal of Merit to recognize outstanding individual technical and professional contributions to the mineral industry. And in 1995, an award was instituted to recognize contributions made by companies and organizations in partnership with the mining industry. This year's inductee is James R. Moffett, chairman and chief executive officer of Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold Inc. He will be present as guest of honor and featured speaker. The Hall of Fame will induct John V. Dorr, metallurgist and chemical engineer. Also inducted will be Frederick L. Ransome, a geologist. Medals of Merit will be awarded to Hugo T. Dummett, senior vice president, Exploration BHP Minerals, and Spencer R. Titley, professor in the Department of Geosciences at the University of Arizona. An Industry Partnership Award will be presented to the Colorado School of Mines for its continued support to the mining industry through education and research. The Sam Goosly or Equity silver deposit is fundamental- ly a discovery based on the analysis and interpretation of reconnaissance geochemical samples. The discovery was made by Kennco in an area of heavy forestation and wide- spread cover by thin glacial debris. No major mines had been discovered in the vicinity of the discovery prior to the geochemical reconnaissance, and the interpretation of the geochemical results therefore was based on data available through geologic mapping and the sample collection process. In the period 1959-1961, PE. Hirst and his crew, in 1962- 1965 P.T. Blackand his crew, and in 1966-1967 C.S. Ney and P.T. Black and their crew collected geochemical samples from the area of what is now the ore body. Several of these samples were compiled and reanalyzed in the winter of 1966- 1967 for various trace elements, including fluorine. A strong, almost 16-sq-km (10-sq-mile) fluorine anomaly was projected along with a very weak heavy metal anomaly. On the basis of this anomaly, a chalcopyrite-bearing quartz monzonite was discovered in 1967. This was a misleading, noneconomic discovery not associated with the Sam Goosly discovery. The interpretation of the geochemical data by Barakso that summer indicated that another source was responsible for the fluorine anomaly. The conclusion was based on the assemblage of trace elements. Therefore C.S. Ney recommended further regional soil sampling to check the original data. The early results of this follow-up sampling found over 33 ppm silver. First float, then ore outcrop was found in the area of the silver anomaly. The attached reprints complete the development of the property after the discovery of the outcrop of ore.
