Real option value (ROV) method is considered to be more practical and advanced compared to net present value (NPV) method in evaluating a mining project, in particularly when there is substantial uncertainty in the commodity market as well as possible operational flexibility embedded in the project. Usually, it may take months or even years for the commodity product to be available in the market after the mining activation decision is made. The impacts of postponing the delivery of commodity product on the mine?s ROV and NPV are assessed based on the proposed real option method. Postponing the delivery of the products leads to declined NPV and ROV compared to the non-postponing scenario and extended postpone results in higher lost values in NPV and ROV. For a mine with lower mining cost, by postponing the delivery, the exercising threshold of commodity price is lower because the mine owner anticipates that commodity price may rise during the time of postponing. A mine with higher mining cost requires a higher exercising price threshold to ?lock up? the profit when there is ambiguity of market situation due to the postponing of the delivery.

The White Pine Mine is located 4- 1 /2 miles south of Lake Superior in the western part of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The orebody occurs in tabular, gently dipping Keweenawan sediments. GEOLOGY The orebody outcrops beneath 30-50 feet of Pleistocene clays and dips to the east and northeast to a depth of 3, 000 feet in five miles. It lies midway between the Porcupine Mountains and the Bergland Hills, both of which are steeply dipping felsite and coarse porphyry intrusives, extrusives and sediments (Figures 1 and 2). The orebody sediments were deposited in the Keweenawan basin during mid- and upper Keweenawan times. Mineralization occurs in the basal 20 to 25 feet of the Nonesuch formation, which is made up primarily of laminated siltstone s. Native copper, chalcocite, and silver are the ore minerals. The ore is mined by trackless room-and-pillar methods.

Over the past decade there has been a continual decrease in domestic oil reserves accompanied by a sharp increase in the demand for energy. Even with increased imports of foreign oil, the energy demand has not been met. This has forced many users to turn to substitute fuels. Of the many substitute fuels available most users are turning to and creating an increased demand for low sulfur coal. Because of the increased demand for low sulfur coal as well as the inherent problems in producing eastern coal, many producers have turned their attention to the large deposits of low sulfur coal in the western United States. Western coal mining is, however, not without its problems such as high moisture content, high ash content, highly variable sulfur content, multiple seams, and/or pitching seams. It is to aid in the solution of these problems that this chapter is directed.

The Sudbury Basin is the scene of the mining operations of the Ontario Division of the International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited. Around the rim of the geological formation and within thirty miles of the City of Sudbury are located twelve operating mines and one open pit operated by the Company. The City, with a metropolitan population of some 100,000 lies 240 miles Northwest of Toronto. In addition, there is one mine in Northwestern Ontario, at Shebandowan, 700 miles Northwest of Sudbury. In 1973 these mines produced 16.5 million short tons of ore of which 14.9 million tons were from underground and the balance from open pit operations. Mining methods include blasthole, sublevel caving, induced caving, shrinkage, cut-and-fill and undercut-and-fill. Raise boring commenced at Inco in 1964 and is now applied at all mines in the Sudbury District (Figure 1). [ ]

The sorptive and impervious nature of clay materials was recognized long before modem technology allowed us to understand the physiochemistry of clays. In Cyprus, around 5000 BC, sorbent clays were used for fulling woolen cloth. One of the earliest recorded uses of clays as an impervious liner was more than 3200 years ago in the construction of a bitumen-sand-gravel-clay liner built along the embankment of the Tigris River at Assur. Today one of the most common applications for clay minerals in the environmental industry is for use as impermeable barriers to fluid transport. Clay minerals are fine in particle size and thus have large surface areas, which, as a result of intermolecular forces and ionic substitutions, make them excellent materials for both ion exchange and ion sorption. Therefore it was logical to consider certain clay materials for applications in the environmental industry, where they can act as physical and chemical traps for potential contaminants. Certain bentonites have historically been used as sealants for fluids (Grim, 1962), and other clays have been used as sorbents for both water and oil (Haden, Jr., 1972). Prior to the 1980s, disposal of the nation's municipal, commercial, chemical, and nuclear wastes was largely indiscriminate and poorly regulated. This created environmental pollution problems, especially with respect to groundwater contamination. Promulgation of federal regulations like the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA - commonly known as Superfund) have forced a more careful and costly approach to waste disposal. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is the government body charged with enforcing and ensuring compliance with federal regulations governing toxic waste production, storage, and disposal. Widespread application of geotechnology to the design and construction of waste containment systems and to pollution remediation has become necessary due to such laws and because of increasing use of the subsurface environment for the disposal of hazardous wastes. In the United States nearly 1.8 kg of trash is disposed of per person per day, which amounts to nearly 181 Mt per year. This amount is more than double the waste produced in 1960, and these numbers are expected to continue to increase. Canada produces approximately 1.68 kg of waste per person per day. The EPA estimates that in the United States 64% of our garbage is landfilled, 18% recycled, and 18% incinerated. Even with continued increases in recycling and incineration efforts, the EPA projects that the United States will still need 82% of today's landfill capacity in the year 2000. Data on the exact number of landfills in the United States and Canada is conflicting in part because of changing definitions of what constitutes a landfill and because of inadequate record- keeping by some states and provinces. An estimate of the number of municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills in the United States in 1990 to 1991 ranged from 4 462 to 10 467 with an average estimate of 6 600. In Canada the number of MSW landfills reported varied from 5 493 in a 1982 survey to 1 766 reported in a 1991 National Solid Wastes Management Association (NSWMA) survey (Repa and Sheets, 1992b). A properly operated MSW landfill on average requires 1 hectare of land per year per 25 000 people (Coates, 198 1). In addition to MSW facilities, there are also waste disposal facilities needed for hazardous waste and low level and high level radioactive waste. In 1983, approximately 266 Mt of hazardous waste was generated in the United States, almost 50% of this by industrial production. About 68% of the hazardous waste generated in the United States and Canada and almost 50% generated in Europe are still landfilled (Egger, 1987). In 1985, approximately 51 000 m3 of commercially produced low level radioactive waste was disposed of in radioactive waste disposal sites across the United States (Jungling and Greeves, 1989). By 1987, the US defense program had produced approximately 10 000 t of high level nuclear waste. In addition, there were approximately 14 000 t of spent fuel assemblies from commercial nuclear power plants in temporary storage; the amount is expected to nearly triple by the year 2000. Presently most commercial spent fuel assemblies are stored in water-filled pools at nuclear power plants. Defense waste is stored on federal reservations in surface and underground steel tanks (Anon., 1987). Under federal law nearly all waste disposal and containment sites are required to have a liner or barrier and a cover system design that meets federal- or state-approved hydraulic conductivity requirements for the type of waste that the site will receive. When approved materials, necessary for constructing the waste containment structure, are not available on site, one of the most economical ways to meet these requirements is through the use of clay, soil/clay, or clay/geotextile materials. In a 1991 survey by NSWMA of its members and other select private sector facilities, 81% of the surveyed landfills had some type of liner system. About 75% of these liners were clay materials (either recompacted or natural). The remaining 30% were using flexible membrane liners as part of a liner system. Clay liner materials are most commonly used in the South, Midwest, West-central, and South-central regions of the United States. About 93% of the landfill facilities had closure plans, and of these 91 % were using clay materials in some way for the final cover material (Repa and Sheets, 1992a). Waste barriers and containment structures take several basic forms, and they are used in a variety of different applications: 1) cutoff walls, 2) soil or soil/clay-admix liners, 3) geosynthetic bentonite-clay/geotextile membranes, 4) radioactive waste containment barriers, and 5) synthetic geomembranes. The increasing size of flotation cells as the use of flotation has increased is traced from the first United States application of the process in Montana in 1911 through the following eight decades, using data from the Taggart handbooks (1927) and (1945), from the SME Handbook (1984), and from recent manufacturers' catalogues and other sources for the 1980s and 1990s. With the earliest mechanical cells less than 1 m3 (359) in volume and the largest now available at 200 m3 (7,000ft3), three requirements are necessary: 1) demonstration of advantages in replacing smaller volume by larger volume cells; 2) estimating power requirements, impeller dimensions, and operating rpm by correlation equations; 3) considering effects of using larger cells, in necessarily much shorter rows, on process kinetics. The resulting seven tables that address these problems are presented, and their implications discussed.

Homestake Mining Company has identified a significant native sulfur resource at its Cinnabar Canyon prospect in Mono County, California. Elemental sulfur occurs as replacements, fracture coatings and breccia fillings in a thick sequence of Miocene-Pliocene intermediate volcanic rocks. The deposit extends along a northwest trending regional fault and measures approximately 900' in width, at least 1800' in length, and has a thickness in excess of 200'. The deposit lies approximately 150' below the surface and is covered by a silicified cap of volcaniclastic strata. The deposit has been delineated by rotary and core drilling. Utilizing a grade cutoff of 5% elemental sulfur, the delineated deposit has a probablelpossible resource of 16.1 million tons of ore averaging 17.9% elemental sulfur containing 2.57 million long tons sulfur. Assay grades within the resource area range up to 40% sulfur over a 40-foot intercept.

This paper attempts to answer whether or not the mill performance at Bougainville could have, in fact, been predicted by the population balance approach, or whether other special considerations are required to explain their behavior. In recent studies, the plant tests were performed at Bougainville and batch tests were carried out at the Utah Comminution Center. In all tests power measurements were made and several levels of energy input to grinding were evaluated. Also, tracer tests were performed for mill residence time determination. The performance of Bougainville's 5.5x6.4-m mill has been very successfully predicted by population balance methods. The prediction errors are only about 1% on product size distribution and 4% on power with a mill volume scale-up of 3790:1. It is significant that this approach will reduce the risk of failure in large mill design that has been recognized in traditional methods.

The Mining Foundation of the Southwest (MFSW), located in Tucson, AZ, will hold its 16th annual American Mining Hall of Fame Awards Banquet Saturday, Dec. 5,1998. The Hall of Fame recognizes outstanding contributions to the mining industry by selected individuals and industry partners. Each year, one living award recipient and up to two mining history honorees are chosen by the , Hall of Fame Committee and the Board of Governors of the Mining Foundation. In 1989, the Mining Foundation initiated a Medal of Merit to recognize outstanding individual, technical and professional contributions to the mineral industry. In 1995, an award was created to recognize contributions made by companies and organizations in partnership with the mining industry. This year's inductee, guest of honor and featured speaker will be Charles G. Preble, president and chief executive officer of Southern Peru Copper Corp. He is being recognized for outstanding performance as an executive of an American company operating under difficult circumstances in a foreign country. The Hall of Fame will induct H. Myles Jacob, former chairman and CEO of Inspiration Copper Co., for innovation and farsightedness in matters pivotal to the cop- per industry of his time. In addition, John Cromwell Lincoln, former president and chairman of Bagdad Mining Co., will be inducted for his outstanding contributions to the American mining industry. These contributions include metallurgical research and development of the Bagdad Mine as well as pioneering innovation in the electrical industry. Medals of Merit will be awarded to David N. Skillings, editor and publisher of Skillings Mining Re- view, for his dedication and support of mining interests. J. Ruben Velasco Rodriguez will also receive a Medal of Merit. He is economic geologist, professor and former secretary of the board of directors and secretary general of Compania Minera de Cananea. His medal is for fostering excellent relations between Mexico and the , United States in mining geology and management and for advancing the professional development of others in the field of earth science. An Industry Partnership Award will be presented to Stephen Bechtel and the Bechtel Corp. in recognition of Bechtel's 100th anniversary and the company's outstanding service to the mining industry. INTRODUCTION Dense medium processes have been used to separate coal and ores for over a hundred years. In fact Sir Henry Bessemer first patented a process in 1858. In recent years, their importance relative to other gravity dependent processes has increased. This is particularly true in the coal industry where over 60% of all preparation plants operating in 1984 in North America (1) contained either dense medium vessel or cyclone circuits. In addition, the stringent product quality demands of the consumer, together with increases in mining costs, dictate that the cleaning circuits be both predictable and efficient. Dense medium systems are the most predictable and efficient of all gravity- dependent processes. The majority of the text of this chapter will be concerned with dense medium applications as they relate to the coal industry. However, the techniques and calculation procedures can be applied, in general, to all non-coal minerals (such as diamonds, marginal iron and lead-zinc ores and gravel) which take advantage of a difference in specific gravity between the saleable product and the reject. The object in dense medium cleaning is to produce a liquid whose effective specific gravity is between that of the concentrate and the reject. In which case the lighter product will float to the surface and the heavier product will sink to the bottom. Unfortunately, this simple process becomes complicated by the following practical necessities: (a) collecting and removing the float and sink products from the medium without disturbing the free settling effects; (b) maintaining and controlling the specific gravity of the medium; (c) separating and reclaiming the medium once the products have left the separating vessel; and (d) separating finer sized particles which take longer to fall through the dense, and often viscous, medium. As a result of the last issue (item d) two main types of dense medium separators have evolved: dense medium vessels and dense medium cyclones. Dense medium vessels are essentially large baths through which the dense medium flows at a relatively slow velocity. The lighter products float to the surface and are carried out of the vessel by the medium flow. The heavier products sink to the bottom of the vessel and are physically transported out either by means of a conveyor (usually a chain conveyor) or a rotating, lifting arrangement (Figure 1). Modification of kaolin with amino and mercaptosilanes allows it to form crosslinks and confers significant improvements in modulus, abrasion resistance, compression set and other physical properties of a broad range of polymers.

WaterFlush Technology and WaterFlush crushing offers significant operational ben­efits in gold milling operations. WaterFlush crushing is the technology that Nordberg Inc. has developed, tested and proven in an actual operation during the 1980's. Patents have been obtained for both the process and the apparatus of implementa­tion. WaterFlush involves volumetric process controlled water flow into the ore feed cav­ity of a WF cone crusher. While the addition of water in itself is not new, the con­trolled amount of water coupled with the WF crusher operating parameters are revolution­ary. The WF crusher is a specially designed version of Nordberg's Omnicone crusher oper­ating at higher speeds, with a reduced ec­centric throw and higher horsepower capabil­ity. The results are increased capacity, higher crushing energy input and a finer crusher product. The WF crusher product is a slurry containing 40-60% solids by weight.

Research efforts which have led to reduced resin bolting costs at White Pine Mine are described. Key factor was development of the capability to drill small holes (1 1/8 in. diam) in the hard (20,000-30,000 psi) White Pine roof rock. Economic data comparing the 1 1/8 in fully-grouted Resin Bolt to the conventional 1 3/8 in fully-grouted bolt is also included. The development of a method which allows the Resin Bolt to hold itself in the hole thus removing the requirement for the operator to break his "work momentum" while he stops and waits for the resin to set is also described. This technique increased bolter productivity by 23% in a recent full-scale unit test.

The purpose of this paper is to describe a data-acquisition system for mine ventilation surveys that was developed by the author. The system is composed of "off-the- shelf" components integrated through a custom- designed software package to form a user- friendly data acquisition system capable of operating as an unmanned base station or as an operator-triggered roving station. To demonstrate the applicability of the developed system, the author will present data collected during an experimental ventilation survey, which was performed in one of the underground coal mines of eastern Kentucky.

A plug-flow model is described for the reactor mass balance of a typical AARL gold elution process. The model is in the form of a hyperbolic differential equation and was transformed using the method of characteristics. The transformed model was then solved simultaneously with models dependent on intraparticle surface diffusion and film transfer parameters. The solution was found to represent the experimental data for a modified form of the AARL elution. Correlation between the experimental conditions and the film transfer parameters estimated by the model are also presented.

Since the early 1950's exploration in the Yukon Territory, Canada, has been confined largely to Selwyn basin where at least five large stratiform or massive sulfide Pb-Zn deposits have been discovered. The five ore bodies total nearly 100 million tons of 10-16% combined Pb-Zn with 1-3 oz./ton Ag. The only deposit currently in production is the Anvil Mine operating at 8,000 tons per day. Beginning in 1972, exploration in the Mackenzie Mountains, east of Selwyn basin and west of Mackenzie arch, resulted in finds of Mississippi Valley type Zn-Pb mineralization in a belt of Proterozoic and Lower Paleozoic carbonate rocks (Figure 1). Four districts have been located and intensive exploration by numerous Canadian and Arnerican mining companies is currently in progress over a length of 400 miles in the carbonate belt. The consensus is that a major new Zn-Pb province may be taking shape.

"Above ground, elevated belt conveyors that span more than 200 m (656 ft) between support points can cross valleys, rivers, forests and buildings with a minimal footprint. The cable bridge conveyor (CBC) is a new type of suspension bridge based belt conveyor system that has long spans between support points. It combines a typical belt conveyor and an improved simple suspension bridge to form a conveyor bridge. The improved simple suspension bridge places a widened bridge deck directly on suspended cables, without the need for high truss towers. The benefits include reduced cost and increase aerodynamic stability compared to conventional suspension bridges. The CBC’s compatibility with current belt conveyors allows versatility in application.A belt conveyor is a ubiquitous material handling system. Conveyors can be placed directly on ground or elevated above ground by support structures. Considerations of cost, design, environment, civil work, safety and process requirements are all factors in choosing the ground-based or elevated conveyors (Zhang, 2014). The ground-based conveyor has the lowest structural cost when the conveyor is placed on an existing road. Maintenance access is easy and straightforward. Compared to the groundbased conveyor, the elevated conveyor can cross existing buildings and structures, give passage to traffic beneath the conveyor, has a smaller footprint and requires less civil work to pass mountainous areas. The drawback of the elevated conveyor is higher structural cost, which can be compared with savings in civil work and other benefits. Conventional elevated conveyors are supported by rigid truss-type structures, with a typical span of 15 to 25 m (50 to 82 ft) between concrete support bents or steel trestles. Triangular truss, using steel pipes instead of hot rolled steel sections, is more efficient. The typical span of a triangular truss-supported conveyor is around 30 to 40 m (100 to 130 ft), while the weight is about 10 percent less than conventional box truss with a shorter span (Jennings, 2013).Long-span elevated structures based on suspension bridge is another step forward in increasing the distance between support bents, reaching 100 to 400 m (330 to 1,312 ft) and beyond. The wide distance between the support points of an elevated conveyor offers unique benefits. The conveyor can cross rivers, valleys, highways, forests and other obstacles with minimal footprint and reduced civil work. The versatility from long-span conveyors makes bulk material transportation over previously impossible terrains now a feasible option."

Many mines, in particular coal mines, use inclines or slopes as an access to seam or seamlike deposits which outcrop at or close to the surface. In general, from the surface or from a certain depth, inclines or slopes follow the dip of the deposit with length up to 30,000 feet and by that going under an overburden cover of several thousand feet. The common outbye transport system for mine products is the conveyor. Material and men to be transported down into the mine are handled by rope driven systems when the angle of inclination exceeds the employment of locomotive traction. The transport volume can be sizeable and reach 200 to 300 tons of material and 500 men to be handled daily in a medium size coal mine with a production of 10,000 tons ROM.

The very high cost of exploration and development for new mines requires that a carefully planned, complete, and technically competent geotechnical evaluation be applied to the ore body and the surrounding rock. The ground conditions must be predetermined sufficiently so that, during the development and exploitation stages, unexpected conditions will be of minor consequence. Ground conditions are a major factor affecting the cost of excavated items such as shafts and inclines. For example, shafts cost less to sink in tight dry ground than in highly pervious ground below the water table, with all other factors being equal. The proper mining methods also is dependent upon the ground conditions. Bad ground for room-and-pillar mining may be ideal for caving methods; whereas, ideal ground for room-and-pillar mining would be extremely difficult for a caving operation. To do a proper engineering design, the parameters of strength, deformability, and permeability must be determined, in addition to the loads that will be applied as a result of the mining activity. The required degree of accuracy for each parameter depends upon the individual case. For example, the strength of massive rock in which openings of small cross-sectional area are to be driven at shallow depths needs to be resolved only within several thousand kilopascals (pounds per square inch). Under such conditions, the rock strength is not likely to be of great economic importance unless the rock is very weak. Large openings at great depths require a much more accurate appraisal of rock strength and deformation characteristics. Ground water conditions are important at any depth. Today, a number of techniques exist for evaluating conditions before opening up the ground for development. These techniques and their applications are described in more detail later in this text. The evaluation of ore body ground conditions should start at an early stage, as soon as the deposit has been proven viable for a mine. Economic geology investigations mainly serve to define the value and limits of the ore deposit. To do this properly, the geology of the site is determined in at least as much detail as is necessary to define the "controls" for the ore body. The ground-condition evaluation must determine the engineering properties of the ore body and the surrounding material. This includes the structural geology as it relates to rock strength; i.e., the frequency, extent, and orientation of discontinuities such as faults, joints, bedding, etc. Ground water conditions also must be determined. It is important that the detailed geology of the site be determined at an early date. Reasonable geotechnical parameters must be established during this time period, so they can be used in mining model studies that include both physical and mathematical models. The ultimate goal bf-the geotechnical evaluation is to predict the ground behavior as the excavations are made and how the ground behavior will affect the safety and economic well-being of the mine. The formulation of a ground-condition evaluation program should be planned carefully to determine the particular geotechnical parameters only in as great a detail as will have a bearing on the mine design. For instance, it is not necessary to make numerous triaxial tests in strong rock when the mining will be conducted within a few meters (feet) of the surface in a regime of gravity loading and an absence of tectonic stresses. Similarly, it is not necessary to invest large amounts of time and effort in the determination of joint strengths if the orientations of the joints are such that the failure could not occur along them. Generally, the determination of ore body ground conditions can be divided into four main steps: 1) The general and structural geology of the site must be determined; this is determined primarily during the economic evaluation. 2) The material behavior characteristics of the deposit and the vicinity must be determined. 3) The ground water hydrology of the deposit and the vicinity must be determined. 4) Miscellaneous ground support considerations must be established. Gross features are defined first, followed by a series of increasingly detailed investigations. Specifically, the geology study should start by utilizing techniques such as remote sensing, topographic map interpretation, geologic mapping, etc. After the gross features, such as major faults, have been delineated, the studies are directed toward defining the more detailed elements of jointing, rock strength, ground water hydrology, and other characteristics. This information is used to formulate an assessment of the strength of the ore body and the surrounding rock. Finally, all of the gathered information is integrated to make an assessment of the rock behavior in relation to the types of openings, the excavation methods, the support requirements, etc., that should be used for the rock conditions that are present. The mine design and the geotechnical assessment should be an iterative process. General conclusions about the rock conditions will dictate a type of mine plan. The specific mine plan then should be modified by specific geotechnical considerations. For example, an initial assessment may conclude that the ore body is strong and that a strong rock unit is present over the ore body. Thus, one definite possibility is to mine the deposit by room-and-pillar methods. However, subsequent investigations may reveal faults through the deposit, requiring relocation of the mine openings so that pillars and other structures are in sound rock. In other words, the final mine plan should be compatible with the geotechnical aspects of the ore body.

Traditionally, water removal has taken a backseat to many other coal mining functions. However, it is a vital part of the total mine support system. In many US coal mines, more tons of water are removed each year than tons of coal. An excellent discussion of general drainage characteristics can be found in Chapter 8 of Elements of Practical Coal Mining, published by SME-AIME. This chapter is organized into three major sections.
