In attempting to assess the contributions of Antoine Gaudin to the profession which he illuminated for almost a half-century, we will need to examine a very broad canvas. He was active in three significant areas: as a teacher; in research, both through his own endeavors and those of his students; and as a consultant to the mining industry and to the Government. Beyond these specific contributions, there was the major personal influence he had on scores of students, friends, and colleagues in the profession. If a single measure of the man's contribution is to be found, it will be the extent and direction in which he influenced the practice of his profession. To find this we should examine the state of miner- al processing when he began his activities in the 1920's, the progress which has taken place over the past half-century, and the part his activities played in this advance. However, there is a provocative and broader examination which I have chosen to make instead. This is to examine the past century in mineral processing through the lives of three men who, by common agreement, stand on the heights, both in teaching and in their contributions to industry: Robert H. Richards, Arthur F. Taggart, and the man whose memory we honor this evening, Antoine M. Gaudin. Their careers, by coincidence, cover just a century. This is also AIME's first century, and the first century of mineral industry education in the United States. In fact, mineral processing itself on any significant scale in the country encompasses only a century and a quarter. BEGINNINGS OF PRACTICE IN THE U.S. Before the 1840qs, U.S. mining, except for coal and iron ore, was on a small scale and was confined to the eastern states, with processing practically nonexistent. The 1840's saw the beginning of Michigan native copper production, including ore dressing; the 18501s, iron ore production in Minnesota; and the 18601s, lead production and processing in Missouri. But the most explosive event was the California gold rush after 1848, which not only brought tens-of-thousands of fortune hunters to the West, but also catalyzed broad mining activities and processing within the following decades. Specialty silica materials, as defined in this chapter, are rocks that consist predominantly of silica (SiO2) and are produced as chunks, round pebbles, and sawed or trimmed blocks and other shapes for nonconstruction applications. The rock types include quartzite, sandstone, novaculite, flint, chert, and vein quartz. Other terms used commercially include jasper, silex, lascas, and rock crystal. In its publication, Minerals Yearbook, the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) reports the production and consumption of some specialty silica materials under several headings. Quartzite, sandstone, and novaculite used in abrasive applications are addressed by the USBM under Abrasive Materials. Lascas, a type of vein quartz used in growing synthetic quartz crystals and in fusing applications, is discussed under Quartz Crystal. The Rowland Coal Preparation Plant is located on Workman's Creek in Raleigh County, West Virginia, approximately 20 miles Northwest of Beckley and 10 miles Southeast of Ameagle. It is owned and operated by the Rowland Division of Consolidation Coal Company. This paper describes the plant flowsheet, process considerations that were evaluated in its development, and observations made during and since the plant was constructed. The final flowsheet was developed specifically to wash the coal from the Rowland Mine and contains several equipment combinations and applications heretofore never placed in a single, commercial operation. The major process equipment is presented in a functional description of the flowsheet. The coal reserves are leased from the Rowland Land Company and consist primarily of #2 Gas and Middle Eagle coals and various major splits of the Middle Eagle seam. The Rowland Coal Preparation Plant was designed to process 560 TPH of raw coal consisting of 50 percent #2 Gas coal intimately mixed with 50 percent Middle Eagle coal and containing lumps no larger than a 12-inch cube.

P. T. Pacific Nikkel Indonesia (PTPNI) was incorporated in Jakarta, Indonesia in February, 1969 by a group of Dutch and North American companies. At the same time, a Contract of Work with the Government of the Republic of Indonesia was signed, granting Pacific Nikkel all the necessary licenses and permits to explore and develop all nonradioactive minerals in two separate areas in Irian Jaya, eastern Indonesia. Nickel mineralization occurrences were confirmed by Dutch geologists in the two areas in 1952 and 1955, however, detailed exploration began in June 1969 after the Contract of Work was signed. Since that time, numerous studies and investigations have been conducted to determine the feasibility of producing metallic nickel in Irian Jaya. Four engineering studies, two bulk sample tests, an oceanographic survey, and a preliminary site investigation indicated that construction and operation of a nominal 100 million pounds per year metallic nickel plant on Gag Island were technically feasible. The fourfold increase in the price of oil in late 1973 without a corresponding adjustment in the price of nickel necessitated a reevaluation of the project, the results of which showed that the project required other conditions to be viable. Subsequently, analysis of: the future projected nickel supply-demand and cost-price relationships, the economics of treating a higher grade feed, and participation by the Government of Indonesia, indicate that the project will be viable. Therefore, planning of the Gag Island Nickel Laterite Project is continuing with the objective of commencing production to supply the market in the 1983-1984 time period.

INTRODUCTION When Palmer King asked me to prepare a paper for this conference, it seemed quite appropriate, since I am Chairman of Subcommittee No. 4 of the U. S. National Committee on Tunneling Technology and we are presently making a detailed study of contracting practices. Before the end of this year, we expect to publish our report containing guidelines aimed at improving our contracting practices and minimizing the problems which develop therefrom. The American construction and mining industries today are glowing examples of the ingenuity of man pitting his wits against the unknown. Without the promise of rewards commensurate with the perils faced and the effort expended, it is doubtful that these industries could have reached their present state of advancement. Nevertheless, these industries are still primitive compared to many others such as aerospace and electronics. That our present contracting practices leave something to be desired is evidenced by the fact that many of our underground projects wind up with tremendous increases in estimated cost, financial disaster, and costly dispute and litigation. The situation is aggravated by the current economic uncertainty, energy crisis, and shortage of materials. At the same time, if our industries are to develop their maximum technologic potential, we must employ contracting practices which will encourage that development. INTRODUCTION With the discovery and depletion over the years of near surface ore bodies, exploration targets are tending to be at greater depth or overlain by various types of overburden which in some cases extends to considerable depth or is heavily water bearing. Access to these types of deposits for exploration and development often requires vertical shafts. This paper discusses the concept of small shaft engineering and construction, primarily for underground exploration but also for use as a low tonnage production facility or for mine ventilation. The option of a small shaft may be attractive in a number of cases, some of which are: The underground exploration of a deposit at depth where minimal expenditure is desirable until the potential of the deposit has been determined. The exploration shaft in many cases later serves as a ventilation way and second means of egress. Production of ore in a small tonnage/high-grade operation where decline access is impractical. For ventilation where other types of openings are impractical or would delay start-up of mine operations.

Mineral liberation modeling can be traced back to the early work 0fA.M. Gaudin up through more recent population balance modeling by R.p. King, J.A. Herbst and G.T. Adel. A more micro-scopic look was taken at the University of Utah in the form of the J.E. Sepulveda and J.D. Miller Pargen model which permits the creation of an arbitrary shape, multiphase particle made up of discrete grains. Recent work on image analysis and tomographic analysis by J.D. Miller and C.L. Lin have laid the experimental ground work for model validation, but until now it hasn't been possible to include the necessary physics of the particle stressing process to allow the development of a 'ffirstprinciples"mode1 which does not presuppose a "mode” of liberation (e.g., random or by detachment). Recent developments in discrete grain breakage (DGB) modeling now make a generalized physics based model feasible. This paper describes current work that is being done to develop a physics based discrete grain liberation (DGL) model. Two-dimensional and three dimensional simulation results exploring the effects of particle size, phase properties and loading type are presented. Relationships between energy based liberation efficiency, degree of random liberation and material properties are identified.

Oxide particles are commonly used as fillers in plastics, paper, rubber, etc. (particulate composites). The successful fabrication of such composites is dependent upon the adhesive strength of the filler particles to the matrix. The compatibility of the matrix and the filler particles is generally enhanced by the adsorption of surface modifiers such as surfactants and polymers at the particle-matrix interface. To develop a scientific basis for the selection of the appropriate modifiers it is necessary to understand their adsorption mechanisms. specifically, the adsorption of polymeric additives is attributed to a combination of chemical and electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding and van der Waals forces. Hydrogen bonding has been suggested to be the primary adsorption mechanism for nonionic polymers. However, a literature survey of the Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-oxide system suggested that PEO, a nonionic polymer, was substrate specific. A systematic study was undertaken to investigate the adsorption mechanisms of PEO on oxide particles. It was determined that strong Bronsted acid sites on the surface interact with the ether oxygen, a Lewis base, of PEO to induce adsorption. In this work, characterization of PEO binding sites on oxides is reported and the mechanisms of PEO adsorption are discussed.

This paper addresses the question ?What constitutes the right level of investment in community goodwill?? Mining companies are still grappling with this subject even though the business case for community investment has been accepted at a general level, as a strategy for competitive differentiation, risk mitigation and a desire to deliver - and to be seen to deliver - a ?net benefit? to affected communities. Gaining senior management commitment to long term social projects, by definition characterized by uncertainty and complexity, is made easier if projects are shown to benefit the site?s strategic goals. Case study research amongst mining companies, including interviews with social investment decision-makers, has assisted in developing a SI-DAT (Social Investment Decision Analysis Tool), a decision model for evaluating social projects in order to create value for both the company and community. Multi-criteria decision analysis techniques integrating business planning processes with social impact assessment have proved useful in assisting mining companies think beyond seeking access to required lands and peaceful relations, to how they can meet their business goals and contribute to regional development.

Experiments were carried out on 76 mm laboratory heavy medium cyclone treating -2.0 t 0.5 mm coal and on two 600 mm industrial heavy medium cyclones treating coal in the size range -13.0 t 0.5 mm. The variables studied were spigot diameter and feed medium gravity. The generalised distribution curve for the separation of coal in these heavy medium cyclones has been defined by the equation [ ] The specific gravity of separation SG has been found to increase linearly with increase in feed medium, gravity (SGf). The relationship for SG of industrial cyclone is given as 50 SG = -6.801 t 6.463 SGf t 0.0327 Spig 50 -0.02625 SGf. Spig. Further, the probable error for the separation has been found to be linearly related to (SG50 - SGf ) according to the equation [ ] The model equations developed have been used to select appropriate levels of operating conditions to achieve an increase in the yield by about 2 to 4% without affecting the quality of the product.

One aspect of long-range mine planning in an open-pit mine is first to define the ultimate pit limit, i.e., the projected size and shape of the pit at the end of its life. This chapter is concerned with various techniques that are currently in use today in determining the ultimate pit limits using the computer. Prior to the early 1960's, open-pit limits analyses were entirely performed manually. This manual technique has been well explained by Soderberg and Rausch in Surface Mining (1968). Soderberg and Rausch also explain clearly the need for establishing the ultimate pit limits in long-range mine planning, i.e., location of surface facilities, dumps, etc. Consequently, the need for ultimate pit limit design will not be reiterated here. Nor will the definitions of the most commonly accepted terminologies such as break-even stripping ratio, economic cutoff grade, ultimate and working slope angles, preproduction stripping, etc. be repeated here. Briefly, the objective of the ultimate pit limit design (which is also frequently referred to as pit design in short) is to determine the projected final pit limits of an ore body and its associated projected grade and tonnage, which will maximize some prespecified economic criteria while satisfying practical operational requirements.

The Bureau of Mines' Denver Research Center initiated a subsidence research program in 1978. The short ten goals of the program were to determine practical methods and equipment for measuring subsidence and demonstrate these methods by monitoring subsidence at several mines having mining, geologic and topographic variables typical of those encountered in the western United States. Data from the monitoring program would be supplied to cooperating mining companies and used by the Bureau to accomplish the long term objective of developing and validating subsidence prediction techniques applicable to mines in the West. Subsidence monitoring is being conducted at five mines in Colorado and Utah with substantially different mine plans, mining methods, depths of cover, and topography. The monitoring procedures used at each site are similar and include designing the monitoring network layout, installing the subsidence monuments, initial and periodic surveying of the monuments, and processing the survey data. The network layout, surveying methods, and types of monuments vary according to the conditions at the individual sites and the type of data being collected.

A fundamental study of the mechanisms involved in the conditioning of coarse Florida phosphate has led to some interesting discoveries. Studies by the US Bureau of Mines have shown that conditioning time and mixing intensity greatly affect the grades and recoveries of the phosphate minerals and quartz in the rougher concentrate. In particular, as the conditioning time or mixing intensity increased, the phosphate recovery remained constant while the amount of quartz floated decreased. This phenomenon is contrary to conventional wisdom and could lead to a more efficient coarse flotation circuit.

The problem of defining the optimum final limits of an open-pit mine has challenged the mining industry for the last three decades. The difficulty results mainly from the great number of variables involved and from the sheer computational effort required in real-life applications. An actual lignite deposit is used in this study to introduce and apply a new methodology that can be used as a basis for surface-mine design optimization. A geologic-reserves model of the deposit is first developed with the use of an integrated geostatistical-modeling package. The model is transformed into an economic one through the use of flexible objective function formulation(s). The final open-pit limits are then optimized using a competent commercial optimizer, and comparative-sensitivity analyses are performed to study the effect of some basic mining and economic parameters on the optimal pit design. The conclusions drawn can develop useful guidelines for decision making by the mine operator.

"Acid mine drainage (AMD) has become a serious environmental problem in the mining industry in the last decade. Many efforts have been made in an attempt to find a better method to manage this problem in a proper manner, both through prevention and mitigation. One of the methods to prevent AMD generation is a dry dump cover system that has been proposed to minimize oxidation of sulphide waste rock in dumping sites. The performance of this system depends on the physical and geochemical stability of a barrier layer to minimize water and oxygen influx. In the mining industry, this barrier layer is formed by using Inert/Non Acid Forming (NAF) waste rocks to cover Potentially Acid Forming (PAF) underneath. However, the availability of NAF waste rocks, due to the geological condition, mining sequence and capability of equipment, is limited in some mines. This paper will discuss the acid generation mechanism, application of a cover system and its problem being faced in an Indonesian coal mine, and describe a preliminary laboratory result of a multi layer cover system in an attempt to overcome this problem."

From a computational point of view calculating a variogram is a perfectly simple operation. For any particular study, we know which variable is to be studied. We also have a good idea of structural parameters which are likely to be important (the scale of the phenomenon, the probable direction of the anisotropy, etc.). Finally, we know the structure of the data file. So we can specify the parameters to be used to calculate the variogram (the distance classes, the angular classes, etc.). This allows us to decide which variogram program is most appropriate (1, 2 or 3 dimensional data, regularly or irregularly spaced, etc. ) . In general, the basic statistics (mean, variance, correlation? etc.) have been calculated beforehand, and so the distribution of the data is already known. Consequently, the choice of the parameter values fed into the variogram is by no means arbitrary. But it must nevertheless be made before the' variogram is calculated. If the resulting variogram is not satisfactory, the whole sequence of operations has to be repeated. Before going on to see how this can be avoided, it is worthwhile having a brief look at the common causes of "unsatisfactory" variograms.

A thorough knowledge of coal permeability and its variation with factors like stress conditions, and time, is useful in simulation studies of mine ventilation and coalbed methane recovery, as well as characterizing coalbed methane reservoirs. An experimental investigation was carried out to study the gas flow characteristics of coal to enhance the under- standing of the mechanism of methane flow through it. The work consisted of measurement of permeability of coal samples under triaxial stress and an examination of the physical structure of coal using electron microscopy. Effort was made to fit the experimental data to several phenomenological models that have been used to describe fluid flow through porous media. It was realized that gas flow through coal cannot be described by models that assume this flow to be through a bundle of capillary tubes. However, results suggest that this gas flow could be predominantly through fractures and cracks in coal, and this could be represented by flow between parallel plates.

Refractory gold ore pretreatment processes continue to receive much attention. This paper compares the relative economics of treating ores by oxygen pressure oxidation, roasting and bacterial oxidation with or without preconcentration by froth flotation. Capital and operating cost estimates for each method of pretreatment were prepared and these estimated costs and ore sulfide grades then are used to compare the process economics. The study indicates that the most significant item affecting the economics is the amenability of the ore to flotation. The cost benefits of flotation are $10-13 per tonne ore processed (2%-4% s=, 10:1 ratio of concentration). In most cases bacterial oxidation has the lowest overall cost, especially if less than complete oxidation of the sulfides will give acceptable recovery, however bacterial oxidation has yet to be practiced on a large scale. In all situations pressure oxidation shows the highest cost. However, the cost differences between the treatments are small, less than $7 per tonne.

The southwestern United States has an abundance of natural lightweight aggregate (NLA) deposits of volcanic origin that are being used in the construction industry within the region. New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and California utilize NLA in portland cement concrete and concrete masonry units for weight reduction and related economic reasons. The geological environment of the western United States is amenable to the occurrence of natural lightweight rocks because it contains Tertiary and Quaternary volcanic products that include low-density glass and vesicular material. There are two major classical types of natural lightweight materials of igneous origin; pumice and cinder. These account for the vast majority of volcanic rocks that are presently utilized as NLA. Pumice is an ejecta product generally found as part of tuffaceous units associated with nearby siliceous volcanic centers. Cinder, also an ejecta product, is associated with mafic volcanics and is most often found as a cinder cone. Both are highly vesicular. A third type of natural lightweight material, though also associated with siliceous volcanics, is less vesicular than pumice. It is best described as being a slightly pumiceous rhyolite or rhyolite-tuff breccia that occurs as a siliceous dome or tuft unit that is most likely to be glassy. Uses of these natural lightweight rocks center on the construction industry where they are utilized in lightweight portland cement concrete and lightweight concrete masonry units. The major reason for usage in portland cement concrete is cost saving effected by weight reduction in high-rise construction. The major usage in concrete masonry units, or "block", is for weight reduction that enables a mason to lay more lock.
