Location Xiaolangdi is located in the Henan province of the People’s Republic of China. The distance between Xiaolangdi and the capital of Henan, Zhengzhou, is about200 km. Xiaolangdi is located on the Yellow River at the end of its big characteristic knee. It can be easily found on the map by locating Luoyang. The closest big city to Xiaolangdi is Luoyang (about 45 km). This city has about1 million inhabitants and is well known also to foreigners for its famous historical past. It has been the capital of China through 10 dynasties in former times. Overview The Xiaolangdi Multipurpose Dam Project is located at the last gorge of the middle reach of the Yellow River. The main purposes of the project are: -flood control, - ice jam control, - sediment control, - irrigation, - water supply, - hydroelectric power generation. The project consists of many structures, these are 10 intake towers, 9 flood &sediment tunnels, 6 power tunnels, 1 underground powerhouse, and 1 zone dearth and rockfill dam with a sloping impervious core, 154m high, with a crest length of 1317m. The powerhouse mainly features 6 turbine and generator units of 300 MW, totalling installed capacity of 1800 MW and annual energy output of5.1 GWH. The total storage capacity of the reservoir is 12.65 billion m³ of which 5.1billion m³ is live storage. Of the Yellow River drainage basin, 694,000 km2 or 92,3percent is located upstream of Xiaolangdi Dam Site. Xiaolangdi is located in a key position for flood and sediment control of the Yellow River. Upon completion, Xiaolangdi Dam and Reservoir will effectively mitigate catastrophic floods, the control level will be increased from the present less than 100-year return period up to 10,000 years. Covers with capillary barrier effects (CCBE) have been used in recent years as gas barriers for the isolation of wastes, including reactive mine tailings. Capillary barrier effects help to maintain a high degree of saturation in the moisture retaining layer, which then reduces gas flux. Various factors affect the degree of saturation of the moisture retaining layer in a CCBE, such as the material water retention characteristics and layer thickness. Slope geometry can also influence the hydrogeological behaviour of a CCBE, but this factor has frequently been ignored in the past. In this paper, the authors show some results of a numerical study that illustrates the influence of slope on the behavior of capillary barriers made of different types of material. The numerical model calculations are based on an actual case of a CCBE constructed in northern Quebec. This investigation shows that the water content profile is greatly affected by the position along the slope. Thus, it is necessary to evaluate the influence of the geometry to properly establish the performance of a cover system.

The Congress gold property, located near Goldbridge, B.C., is extremely refractory with most of the gold disseminated in fine- grained arsenopyrite. Metallurgical testwork conducted by Giant Bay Biotech Inc. indicated that biooxidation pretreatment was capable of increasing cyanide gold recovery from the ore to greater than 90%. To determine if the bioleach process could be successfully scaled up, a 225 cubic meter commercial size bioleach reactor was built and tested at the mine site in 1989. At that time the tank was the largest bioleach reactor ever operated. This paper discusses our experiences in operating the tank, summarizes some of the data obtained and describes the problems encountered.

Restoration of a wetland which was initially disturbed at the turn­of-the-century will be undertaken to compensate for the temporary loss of wetlands associated with future mining operations. The proposed mitigation area exhibits xeric conditions as a result of past dredging and gravel mining operations which had the effect of lowering the flood plain surface and wasting the fine surface sediments. Together these mining activities resulted in complete alteration of the surface and subsurface water systems. Water which had inundated the soil profile, now flows on the basalt bedrock, surfacing only for a relatively short time during high flow periods. The conventional approach to wetland restoration in this type of area is to remove surface material in an attempt to bring the surface nearer to the underground water. These operations would require the removal and redistribution of large quantities of gravel, cobbles and boulders and the attendant destruction of existing wetland areas. Rather than lowering the surface elevation to the water level, the mitigation plan conceptualized for this project involves forcing the water to the surface by creating subsurface ponds behind four impermeable barriers. The barriers will extend vertically from the bedrock to the surface. Surface berms will be constructed along the length of each groundwater barrier to enhance sediment deposition and encourage the development of wetland vegetation. This is the least expensive and least invasive method of creating a wetland which will remain saturated to the requisite degree and for the amount of time required for classification as a wetland as defined by the 1989 Federal Manual for Identifying and Delineating Jurisdictional Wetlands.

INTRODUCTION Placer Dome's Turquoise Ridge Joint Venture operation is located some 75 km northeast of Winnemucca, a community in north central Nevada. Formerly known as the Getchell Gold Corporation and First Miss Gold, the operation mines refractory ore from the Getchell and Turquoise Ridge gold deposits located on the east flank of the Osgood Mountain Range above the Kelly Creek Basin in the Potosi Mining District. Mining has been ongoing at Getchell since shortly after its discovery in 1934, and was the nation's second leading producer of gold after Homestake in the early 1940s. Over its history the Getchell property has been mined for gold, tungsten, molybdenum and arsenic; mining methods varied from open pit mining to underground mining; processing options included conventional milling, flotation, roasting, heap leaching, and most recently pressure oxidation followed by CIL (carbon-in-leach). As an historical note, the US Bureau of Mines developed the use of carbon for gold recovery at Getchell during the 1940s (Horton 1999). Placer Dome acquired the property in May 1999. The pressure oxidation plant was mothballed in July 1999 and the property was placed on care and maintenance in February 2002 pending further exploration results. The property is currently ramping up to full production status. A joint venture agreement (75% Placer Dome, 25% Newmont) was established with Newmont Mining in 2003 and ore is processed at their nearby Twin Creeks autoclave plant. Mine dewatering is a key element to success. Arsenic is a ubiquitous mineral in many of the mineralized areas of northern Nevada, necessitating treatment of water prior to re-infiltration.

BACKGROUND Gold Fields Mining Corporation started their Chimney Creek operation in late 1987. The dump leaching operations commenced in October and the mill startup took place during the last half of November. The milling process at Chimney Creek is almost a conventional CIP plant with the major exception being the installation of a second thickener as a washing stage prior to CIP12 ' A simplified flow sheet is shown in FIGURE 1. Most of the gold in the mill is liberated by grinding in cyanide. After grinding in a conventional SAGball sill circuit, the cyclone overflow reports to the thickeners. The thickener overflow from the first thickener is pumped through 5 stages of carbon columns for gold adsorption. Slurry from the thickener underflow is leached, washed, re-thickened and pumped to CIP. After approximately 6 hours of retention time in CIP, the slurry is pumped to tailings for final deposition. The carbon from CIP is transferred to the third stage of carbon adsorption and then advanced as normal through the columns and strip circuit. Loaded carbon is stripped at approximately 1500C (3000 F) and 55 kPa (80 psi). After 4-5 hours of stripping, the grade of four tons of carbon is reduced from 5,140-6,860 g/t (150¬200 oz/ton) to typically 17 g/t (0.5 oz/ton). Zinc precipitation is used to recover the gold from the pregnant solution. After a water wash, the stripped carbon is transferred to acid wash or to the kiln feed tank for reactivation. All strip lots are acid washed in 3.0% HC1 and all stripped carbon passes through the kiln for thermal reactivation. Then the carbon is quenched, sized and stored in tanks or bins for transferral to CIP or to the carbon columns. Loaded carbon from the dump leach circuit is treated in a circuit consisting of five carbon columns which are parallel to the mill circuit. No distinction is made between the mill or dump leach carbon once the gold has been stripped from them. CARBON FINES HANDLING Once the carbon has been transferred from the carbon columns, every effort is made to minimize carbon attrition and to recover the carbon fines that have been generated in the process. "193 United Nations members are signatories of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Even though it does not make it legally binding to the country members, the SDGs establishment incites national and managerial frameworks to achieve the SDGs. The mining industry inserts itself in this context by its global presence and frequent location within ecologically sensitive and less developed areas. This paper aims to consolidate the state of academic research on mining, sustainability and sustainable development, by organizing the results of previous studies within a systematic review on the SDGs set. To do so, the ISI Web of ScienceTM Core Collection database was chosen as a database of record, as it is one of the most widespread databases of academic journals. We have used all years available in the ISI database, from 1945 to 2016 (for complete years). The systematic review process comprised of five steps: (i) to search terms [(“sustainability” or “sustainable development”) and mining] on the database and to apply filters of criteria; (ii) organizing papers; (iii) metrics and relations between papers and authors; (iv) classification of the results through content analysis techniques; and (v) synthesis. The results were divided in two groups: the highly cited and the most recent papers, to include papers that have academic impact and those which show the newest contributions to the field. The results showed that, in spite of a growing amount of publications in the past years that relates to mining and sustainability, the main focus of these publications are still on the environmental dimensions of the UN goals. This suggests that more practical and academic work in the mining sector are required to fill in the blank spaces regarding the other set of goals that compose the SDGs framework.Introduction A total of 193 United Nations members are signatories of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). A mining project is proposed for the state of Pahang, Malaysia. The proposal involves the mining of a sulphidic ore body and initial processing to form a sulphide concentrate which will be transported to a roaster/acid plant for the production of sulphuric acid. An outline is presented on the potential environmental impacts of the project which have been assessed by superimposing project infrastructure and processes on to the physical, biological and social environment during the early design and planning stage of the project. The potential impacts eliminated by engineering design and the techniques employed are presented. However, there are a number of potential impacts that require careful consideration and planning for long term management. These include surface water drainage, waste rock leachate, tailings disposal and the social environment. Environmental management designed to minimise or alleviate these impacts as a result of project implementation concludes the paper.

The depletion of high-grade phosphate ores is bringing about a search for a suitable, economically viable technique that con process the abundant low-grade phosphate reserves. About 75% to 80% of the world's low-grade phosphate reserves are associated with carbonate gangue that is not amenable to treatment by the simple techniques of physical separation. The processing of sedimentary dolomitic/calcareousphosphate ore has numerous problems, including similar surface properties of the carbonate and phosphate. Two-stage reverse anionic flotation of carbonates (dolomite/calcite) has appeared to be a promising separation technique ,for the removal of carbonates from sedimentary rock phosphate. In reverse fatty-acid anionic flotation, the depression of phosphate mineral with orthophosphoric acid produces satisfactory results for calcareous as well as dolomitic phosphate ores from several locations of sedimentary origin.

Geopolymerization is a process by which Al-Si minerals undergo dissolution and polymerization in an alkaline solution to form a monolithic material with a high mechanical strength (Davidovits, 1991, 1994). In this study, the factors affecting the geopolymerization of Na feldspar (albite) and K -feldspar (microcline) were investigated. It was found that both Na feldspar and K -feldspar are reactive in geopolymerization with the resultant geopolymers showing a high compressive strength. The leaching ability, the proper molar ratio of Si/Al in the geopolymeric gel phase and the higher average hardness of the undissolved particles remaining in the geopolymers are found to greatly affect the ultimate compressive strength of the formed geopolymers. Mining means drilling and blasting in order to break down the rock, loading and transport, and often also crushing the ore down to a suitable size. These operations can be done in open pits or in underground mines, and also, to a lesser extent, in marine mining. The same operations are also used in various types of construction, i.e., for roads, water power stations, etc. Before beginning a detailed economic analysis of the factors which enter into deciding whether to mine by open-pit or underground mining, and at what point a change should be made from open-pit to underground mining, or vice versa, it is of interest to consider some general factors.

3-dimensional finite element modeling was performed to analyze the safety factors of stump pillars, 18 ft. x 18 ft., under a cover of 208 ft. using the Modified Drucker-Prager Theory. The results showed that they are safe. This was substantiated by underground observations. But the safety factors predicted by three commonly used pillar design formulae showed otherwise. This paper discusses the modeling details and anlyze the difference between 3-D FEM method and traditional pillar design formulae.

There are certain data handling techniques used by statisticans that can help one to calculate the size of an orebody and to develop some of the relationships between size, cutoff grade, average grade, mining cost, and profit. Knowing the relationships amongst these factors can help determine the most desirable operating conditions. A statistical technique that we will use is data grouping. This allows us to work with relatively few groups instead of many samples, If we were able to segregate the ore in an orebody into grade groups, add the amounts in each group, and plot the sums as a curve, we would get something like Figure 1. A smooth curve develops when the grade classes are small enough, otherwise a "stair step? histogram results. The area under the curve, being the sum of the tonnages in all of the grade classes, is proportional to the total number of tons in the orebody. If we take the data of a distribution such as Figure 1 and add the tonnages above a specific grade we have in effect a cutoff grade

The study of the apatite deposits of the Aldan Shield shows wide spread of the Precambrian apatite-carbonate ores and possibilities of using them for extraction of apatite. Dependency of flotation on ore minerals was studied according to the following scheme: preparation of the monomineralic samples of anhydrite, gypsum, chlorite, serpentine, phlogopite, apatite; mixing them in apatite ore of the average composition; followed by flotation. Another series of the experiments was conducted to ascertain a dependence of flotation activity of the different minerals on the different flotation reagents, which were used as collectors. It has been shown that apatite from silicate-carbonate ores is most extractable because it has the biggest size of grains and is the most free of inclusions. Beneficiation of the sulphate-containing apatite-carbonate rocks is possible when flotol - 7.9 is used as a collector. Meanwhile, the use of the tallaktam leads to an increase in the sulphate recovery. The estimation of individual technological features of the layered Mghydrosilicates and their influence on the process of beneficiation has been examined using samples of apatite-dolomite ore (P205-8%) with the addition of the phlogopite, serpentine and chlorite. The results show that there is little influence of the chlorite presence on the flotation while the serpentine presence leads to a decrease of the flotation, because of its high specific surface area.

The Stillwater Mining Co. of Nye, MT, is operating a platinum-palladium mine that requires an extensive system of footwall laterals to facilitate mine production. The 10-year mine plan calls for more than 48,300 lineal m (160,000 lineal ft) of footwall lateral. A rapid tunneling and raising system is necessary to sustain mine production schedules and achieve production goals. This article describes the results of using a Robbins 4.1-m-diam (l3.5ft-diam) tunnel boring machine (TBM) to develop the footwall laterals and a Robbins RBM-6SP raise boring machine to develop raises at the mine. The Stillwater Mining Co is a partnership between Chevron Resources Co. and Manville Corp. Chevron Resources is the managing partner. When the mine began production in September 1986, the owners were primarily concerned with the actual production of platinum and palladium, the grade minable and the amount that could be mined. As mine development and mine production proved feasible, the owners considered higher production levels. The Stillwater Mine is developed by a system of adits (known as footwall laterals) that are driven parallel to the ore bearing zone. This led mine officials to consider using a mechanical boring machine in the primary mine development. Previously, tunnel boring machines have not been used successfully in mining applications. Therefore, the owners decided to purchase a used machine to reduce the potential risk.

Numbers, arithmetic, mathematics. Where did it all come from? Who needs it? We all do, but many school children would not agree. Engineers, physicists, accountants, tax collectors, and most of the general public are well aware that modern society in large part is founded on mathematics and could not exist without it. Mathematics developed over thousands of years as part of the everyday life of man. No one area, tribe, or race can claim discovery. In fact, from the records that do exist, it is evident that many facets of mathematics were discovered independently of others who made similar discoveries. While proof may be lacking, the earliest concepts of mathematics may be some 250,000 to 300,000 years old. The first use of numbers as written records is unknown. However, a bone of a young wolf deeply cut with 55 notches-arranged in two rows, one of 25 notches, the other of 30-was found in Czechoslovakia. Dated to be about 30,000 years old, it is perhaps an early record of some kind of counting system. It is assumed that mathematics was developed as an answer to man's practical needs, but anthropological studies suggest that the art of counting may have developed in connection with the needs of primitive religious ceremonial rites. Fingers probably were first used to designate sets of from one to five objects. Using both hands, up to 10 items could be indicated. As civilization developed, so did the need for more flexible systems to record items of trade, measure land, and figure taxes. Aristotle noted that the development of the decimal system comes from the fact that most people are born with 10 fingers and 10 toes. In spite of this obvious fact many early civilizations used binary, ternary, and quinary systems while vigesimal systems (with 20 as a base) and even sexagesimal systems (with 60 as a base) were used by others. A form of writing was in use in both the Mesopotamian and Nile valleys as early as 3000 to 4500 B.C. In Mesopotamia, wedge-shaped marks were impressed upon soft clay tablets that were hardened in ovens or by the sun. Many thousands of such tablets have survived. When the tablets were finally deciphered, some were found to be records of items shipped in trade, inventories, tax accounts, and mathematics exercises for teaching. Mesopotamia is also the source of an interesting board game dating back to about 2500 B.C. Its buttonlike men and triangular dice were apparently used with squares of shell, inlaid with lapis lazuli and red sandstone. Unfortunately, rules of play were not found. In Egypt, record preservation was somewhat better. Discovery of the Rosetta Stone in 1799 eventually led to deciphering the Egyptian hieroglyphics that included a numbering system at least 5,000 years old. These records show a competence in counting and numbering. A calendar of good accuracy may have been in existence as early as 4,200 years ago. The extraction of gold from chloride solutions by ion exchange is examined. It is shown that at initial gold concentrations between 1 - 5 ppm, 20 g/l C1- and pH 5, the kinetics of loading on weak base resins are slightly slower than those observed with activated charcoal. Equilibrium loading of auric chloride varies considerably as a function of pH from one resin to another. For all of the resins studied, nearly complete gold extraction was achieved between pH 2 and pH 6.5. Sodium hypochlorite was found to exhibit a slight effect on the equilibrium loading of gold chloride.

Introduction The economics of open-pit mining de¬pend heavily on the cost of overburden removal. It is necessary to maintain a pit slope as steep as possible. Steeper slopes lower the volume of overburden to be handled, thus lower the cost of material handling. There is, however, a limit to which the pit slopes in any given situation can be steepened. Steepening beyond this point could jeopardize the pitwall stability, ren¬dering it unsafe. It might even result in curtailment of pit production. Several factors affect the stability of pitwalls. Some are natural, such as topogra¬phy and regional and local geology. Others are man made, such as pit geometry, ground water management, equipment, drilling and blasting, and the type of excavation. Greater control can be exercised in the latter with proper planning and by following a set of procedures based on field experiences. This article deals with one such control¬lable factor - drilling and blasting. The eco¬nomics of steeper pit slopes is discussed, followed by a record of drilling and blasting practices in western Canadian surface mines. Microprocessor-based instrumentation and its application to blasthole drilling is also described. Economics of steeper pit slopes The economics of steeper pit slopes is not a new issue. It should be reinforced, though, that pit slopes must be as steep as possible to ensure maximum recovery of minerals at a minimum stripping ratio. For operating, economic, and safety reasons, different pit slopes are maintained during different phases of pit development. Figure 1 shows a hypothetical ore body, cylindrical shape, with a radius of 225 m (740 ft) and located 30 m (100 ft) beneath the surface. The mining operations are planned at two different slope angles of 25° and 40°. The ultimate pit depth was established on the basis of the criterion of "break even pit." The variation of the stripping ratio at differ¬ent mine levels is shown in Fig. 2. Table I summarizes the eco¬nomics involved for two pit slopes, 25° and 40°. Figure 3 presents the profits during the life of the mine for these two pit slopes. This study shows that steeper slopes for an open pit operation are far more advanta¬geous than flatter slopes. But, what is the optimum slope at any one point in the life of a moving pit? And how can the stable slopes be maintained over the short- and long-term? Canadian blasting practices A survey of blasting practices in western Canadian surface coal mines revealed that, at most mines, hard consolidated overburden is drilled and blasted. Blastholes are drilled with rotary crawler-¬mounted rigs using bits in the 220 to 310 mm-diam (8.5 to 12 in.-diam) range. Typi¬cal hole depths are 12 to 18 m (40 to 60 ft) to accommodate the pit bench heights of 12 to 15 m (40 to 50 ft). For a 12-m (40-ft) high bench, a typical hole will be 14.6 m (48 ft) deep including the subgrade drilling of 2.6 m (8.5 ft). Half of this hole will typically be a powder column and half will be stemmed. For a 15-m (50-ft) bench, a typical hole will be up to 18 m (66 ft) deep including the subgrade drilling. Drilling patterns are usually 9 m (29.5 ft) spacing and 9 m (29.5 ft) burden. De¬pending on local geology and hole diameter selected, drilling patterns of 8 x 8 m, 8.5 x 7.3 m, and staggered patterns of 11 x 5.5 m

ITmk3®(Iron Technology Mark III) is an innovative new ironmaking technology whereby high quality iron nuggets are produced directly from iron ore fines and coal in a rotary hearthfurnace1). The reaction mechanism has been investigated in detail through fundamental laboratory research2)3), and the ITmk3 process has progressed from the laboratory to commercialization by the success of the pilot plant tests initiated at Midrex’ Technical Center and at the Kakogawa Bench Plant (KBP) located at Kobe Steel Ltd. Kakogawa Steel Works4)5). Pilot operations have demonstrated rapid production of the iron nuggets with complete metal/slag separation at a relatively low operating temperature. The Kakogawa Bench Plant (KBP) in Japan has logged 21 days continuous operation during which high quality iron nuggets were produced directly from fine ore and coal. The operation technology and the engineering data obtained from these pilot tests were instrumental for the scale-up of the ITmk3 process for the Mesabi Nugget Corp. pilot demonstration plant, which is located at Cleveland Cliffs Inc. Northshore Mining iron ore pellet plant in Silver Bay, MN. The ITmk3 process is an ideally suited technology for siting at the iron ore mine, as it allows the economical production of a value-added merchant iron product.
