The low-shear viscosity of kaolin slurries is one of the principal characteristics that determine whether a clay can be utilized for paper and ceramic applications. In this work, the causes of high low-shear viscosity and methods for improving the rheological behavior of the slurries were investigated. The presence of fine-grained smectite impurities within the kaolin was shown to detrimentally affect the low-shear rheology of the slurries produced from these clays. It was also shown that mechanically working (i.e., pugging) a crude kaolin followed by desliming to remove these impurities can reduce the low-shear viscosity.

The stability of longwall chain pillars depends not only on the mechanical properties of the coal and surrounding rocks but also on geological and mining conditions. To evaluate the effects of each variable, orthogonal experimental design was employed in a significance analysis. The study concluded that the stability of longwall chain pillars is mainly controlled by the ratio of pillar stress to pillar strength, the ratio of the Young's moduli of roof to coal and floor to coal, entry width, pillar width and the internal friction angle of coal. Additionally, horizontal stress, panel width and mining height also play a significant role.

A menu-driven, linear-programming- based, user friendly computer program was developed to assist mine managers in determining optimal longwall panel dimensions for a given set of operating conditions. A sensitivity analysis must be performed by varying key mining and configurational parameters over an expected, practical range during the optimization process. Results from analysis of a base case mine indicated that no single combination of longwall panel length and face width is optimal for all operating situations. Each mine manager must therefore look closely at his operating situation and determine the proper dimensions to minimize total mining cost.

"The Vermilion range extends from the vicinity of Tower to and beyond the ""international boundary, crossing into Canada at the eastern end of Hunter's Island. The strike is about east and west and the dip approximately vertical, with a westerly pitch. The underground workings at this mine are some 4,500 feet in extent east and west, and over 1,500 feet in depth. The structure here is probably the most complex in the Lake Superior iron districts. Above the iron bearing formation, geologically, comes the basal conglomerate of the Lower Huronian, carrying large boulders and Masses of the iron bearing rocks."

It is a great honor and pleasure for me as President of the Japanese Tunnel Association to send greetings to the 1974 Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference. Recently in Japan, the Japanese Tunnel Association was established as recommended by the OECD Advisory Conference on Tunneling. This is a central organization concerned with tunnel construction consisting of government authorities, universities' research institutes and construction firms as well as manufacturers of relevant materials and equipment. As I was chosen the first president of the newly-established Japanese Tunnel Association, I would like to avail myself of this opportunity to announce to you its establishment and its earnest wish to contribute to the development of tunneling technique not only in our country but also all over the world. At the same time, I cordially request your friendship and cooperation for the benefit of further development of tunneling techniques on both sides of the Pacific. At present, many tunnels are under construction in Japan. The total length of tunnels under construction for railways and highways is about 600km including the 54km Seikan Undersea Tunnel which connects the Main Island and Hokkaido. Naturally, for construction of such tunnels in Japan, we have introduced much equipment and technique from the United States and other foreign countries. Now with accumulated experience, we are confident to be able to furnish various useful information concerning tunnel construction.

This is the 12th year for this column and the 11th in which the royalty data have been tabulated. This year adds 20 to 30 new entries. There are, however, some deficiencies that the readership hopefully will fill. The most common mineral commodity is construction aggregates - either sand and gravel or crushed stone. There are several states where no royalty information was available for either commodity. Readers can help share information about these missing states, so next year there will be fewer states without information. Severn Brown again sent helpful information from the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC). The summer 1992 issue of PDAC Digest recommended"... the most useful technical paper ever published for economic geologists...." "Net smelter return models and their use in the exploration, evaluation and exploitation of polymetallic deposits" was written by R. Goldie and P. Tredger (Geoscience Canada, Vol. 18, No. 4, pp. 159-171). Last year's column described leasing practices in Russia. Some new information has been gathered since then. Kirill Kavun is the managing director of the International Geoeconomic Center in Moscow. He sent two publications from 1992-"Regulation on the procedure of licensing the use of the subsurface," and "Law of the Russian federation on the subsurface." Both are supplements to the magazine Mineral Re¬sources of Russia, Economics and Management.

Sufco coal mine, a subsidiary of Arch Western Bituminous Group, recently purchased a reverse osmosis (RO) system. The systems intent was to remove impurities in the water being mixed with the hydraulic oil to maintain the viability of critical longwall hydraulic systems and to prevent degradation. This project not only ensured hydraulic components from corrosion, but also revealed a cost savings by reducing the percentage of hydraulic oil mixed with the RO water. SUFCO WATER TREATMENT HISTORY Sufco coal mine has been in operation for approximately 70 years. Old works extend up to 15 miles one way, not including adjacent mined out longwall panels. Due to the geologic conditions and strata, water treatment has been as simple as putting water in at a high point of a mined out area and recovering it at a low point to discharge. Doing this reduces the total suspended solids (TSS) to less than 25 parts per million (ppm) and the total dissolved solids (TDS) less than 1,200 ppm which complies with Sufco?s water discharge permit. Even though the requirements for the permit were met, the water is still corrosive in nature. A portion of this water is piped back into the fireline (makeup) water system. It is then boosted to pressures of up to 500 psi to support mining sections, belt systems, equipment, fire fighting systems and the longwall.

Heavy metals contamination is an environmental problem at Army installations engaged in firearms training and munitions production. At these facilities, weathering and corrosion of expended munitions and leaching from wastewater lagoons, landfills and burn pits have resulted in heavy metals contamination of the soil. The principal metals encountered in firing-range soils are lead, copper and zinc. Cadmium and other metals, such as antimony, that are often incorporated in the munitions are sometimes seen in lesser concentrations. Mercury is associated with various propellants and, while present in much smaller concentrations, is of concern because of its acute toxicity. Chromium is primarily associated with plating operations. The transport of metals into groundwater has been confirmed at some locations, which has required treatment of the soil and groundwater at these sites. Certain treatment processes for contaminated soil produce metals-laden extracts, which also require treatment before reuse or disposal. Ion exchange is generally quite effective for removing metals from aqueous streams. However, resins are expensive and must be regenerated, and activated carbon is generally less effective for most metals and also requires regeneration. Therefore, alternative effective and economic sorbents are needed. Twelve sorbents were screened in initial batch testing. These included activated carbon, bark, chitosan, crown ether, corn cob, xanthate, clay (kaolinite and montmorillonite), peat moss, seaweed and reagent-grade zeolite (aluminosilicate, Sigma Product No. Z3125). Of these, zeolite demonstrated the highest capacity for Pb, Cr and Cd. For this reason, zeolite was selected for further testing in batch, kinetic and column studies. Materials and methods Zeolite. The zeolite used in the second-phase batch and column studies was obtained from a natural deposit of clinoptilolite-rich rock located in South Dakota (Rocky Ford SDH) (Desborough, 1996). Large blocks of the material were crushed and sieved into the following three particle size ranges: 0.5 to 1.0, 1.0 to 4.0 and 2.0 to 4.7 mm. This material demonstrates high structural stability in acidic solutions (pH 2.5) (Desborough 1996) and has a measured surface area of 30 m2/g. The measured total cation-exchange capacity (TCEC) was approximately 10 meq/100 g. This is well below what has been indicated for commercially available zeolite, which has been reported to be about 180 to 220 meq/ 100 g. The TCEC test was repeated (Method 9081, SW 846) using sodium acetate. The test resulted in a TCEC of 54.5 meq/100 g. The difference between values obtained for this material and published values for zeolites may be attributable to the greater heterogeneity in the material used in this study, compared to commercially available materials, or to the effect of the relatively large particle sizes utilized. Batch studies. Seven batch studies were conducted using synthetic metal solutions and soil extracts (Table 1). Extract composition: The P-extract was prepared by sequential surfactant extraction of organics from a burnpit soil followed by acid extraction of metals. The pH of this solution is approximately 1.1. A number of metals and organic compounds were present in the soil. Analysis of the extract was restricted to Pb, Zn and Cu concentrations for this study. The FBH extract was produced from a firing-range soil that was oxidized with a 0.01 M CaO solution and then extracted with 0.1 M acetic acid. This was filtered through 0.5-µm Whatman No. 5 filter paper and stored at room temperature. The pH of the FBH extract was approximately 4.5. pH Control: Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) may be present in the zeolite horizon or bed. Calcium ion (Ca") is released from the exchange sites when in contact with solutions containing ions for which it is more selective, such as lead. This results in a rise in solution pH over time. Acid washing removes most of the carbonates, eliminating the need for a buffer. Batch studies were conducted using both acid-washed zeolite (AW) and unwashed zeolite (UW) for performance comparison. The UW zeolite was rinsed with distilled deionized (DDI) water to remove fine soil particles. Both materials were dried at 105°C (220°F) overnight, so that the dry mass could be determined. Technical progress depends on strategic objectives and a concept showing how to benefit from the effects of novel techniques in an innovation process and how to implement them creatively in harmony with manpower capabilities. With the invention of prime movers, it was initially power engineering which dominated the development of industrial history before it was replaced by production techniques resulting from the more widespread use of machines. With the advances in the field of data processing and with the introduction of novel communication techniques, it is information technology- which today is having an ever increasing impact on technological progress. The main objectives of information technology in this context are a positive influence on the ?time? factor as well as the provision of tools to handle the complexity governing many operational processes through a concentration of information for the decision-making process. The German hardcoal industry became aware of the chances inherent in these new technological possibilities for the optimization of operational sequences and of decision-making and planning processes as a potential for success at an early stage and it has worked out a purposeful concept for their implementation.

The combustion of petroleum products produces emissions which contain oxides of nitrogen (NOx), hydrocarbons (HC), and particulate matter (PM) which have adverse health and environmental effects. In recent years there has been increasing interest in the use of water-fie1 emulsions as a substitute for conventional fuels. Emulsified fuels are emulsions of water in fuel, which are typically made of 10 to 20 percent of water mired with certain additives and fuel. Studies have shown that the emulsified diesel can significantly reduce the emissions of NO, PM and car- bon monoxide and increase the fuel efficiency. In order to produce a stable diesel emulsion, the development of an effective surfactant additive is critical. The stability of diesel emulsions is influenced by many factors, including size distribution of the droplets, the viscosity of the continuous phase, the physical properties of the interfacial film, and temperature. This paper describes a method to produce emulsified diesel and combustion results obtained from various tests. It has been found that the diesel emulsion made with this additive package was stable during the test, and the emissions were lower in NO, CO, and PM compared to the baseline diesel.

Yeelirrie lies toward the center of Western Australia, 650 km (404 miles) northeast of Perth (Fig. 1). The ore reserves have been estimated as 52.5 kt (57,871 tons) of contained U3O8, at an average grade of 0.15%, of which almost two-thirds average 0.24% U3O8. the ore body is a thin, elliptical, more or less horizontal sheet measuring approximately 9 km (5.6 miles) in length, between 0.5 and 1.5 km (0.3 and 0.9 miles) in width, and up to 7 m (23 ft) in thickness, extending from the surface to a depth of 8 m (26 ft). In spite of its near surface position, there is only one small outcrop of significant mineralization. Carnotite is the only uranium mineral recognized so far, dispersed through a calcrete horizon, and deposited from circulating ground water which was also responsible for the carbonation of the clays completely filling an Early Tertiary drainage system. Calcrete, as seen at Yeelirrie, is quite distinct from the widespread, thin pedogenic horizons, as it often forms bodies many kilometers in length and up to 20 m (65.6 ft) in thickness, elongated parallel to the drainage lines. It is variously referred to as "valley calcrete" or "ground water calcrete" to emphasize the occurrence and mode of origin. The discovery of Yeelirrie in mid-1971 was the successful culmination of a grass-roots exploration program initiated in 1968 as part of Western Mining Cop's program of diversification from its historical position as a major gold producer. The object was simply to find an economic uranium deposit - with no constaints other than those normally taken as applying in the mineral search. There was, therefore, complete freedom in the selection of the exploration model, or models, to be applied and the areas to be considered, though the choice was inevitably influenced by both the nature of world occurrences and the local geology. One of the options avail- able was the sandstone environment. Yeelirrie was the direct result of pursuing this line of investigation through three sequential, but quite distinct, stages: first, a regional study; second, establishing a case for exploring the inland drainage systems of Western Australia; and finally, an evaluation of the calcrete environment. An assessment of the potential for sandstone-type deposits in Australia necessitated going back to first principles, since there were no known precedents in this country for guiding exploration and, as a consequence, the search need not be influenced by established prejudices. Previous uranium exploration during the 1950s had been preoccupied with vein-type deposits, and, although the sandstone environment was undoubtedly being examined in 1968, no discoveries had been announced to that time. When considering the necessary ingredients -a source of leachable uranium, a circulating ground water system, and a suitable reducing environment - it could be argued that considerable areas in the eastern part of the continent were theoretically prospective, but basin depth and the extensive superficial cover of Mesozoic and Cainozoic sediments presented considerable practical difficulties.

[First of all I want to thank the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME for the opportunity to present what Industrias Penoles, S.A. is doing in Mexico to reach the basic objetive of the enterprise without compromising, in short or long term, the living conditions of the community or attempting in an irreversible form against Nature. Industrias Penoles, S.A. is one of the largest mining and metallurgical companies in Mexico. It was founded in 1887 and at the turn of the century installed a lead smelting operation close to the village of Torreon, which became city five years after the start up of the Penoles smelter. Now Torreon has a population close to 300,000 inhabitants. In 1974 Penoles is still the largest industry in Torreon and the dynamic growth of the city is close related to this factor. Today Penoles in Torreon has a lead smelter with a capacity of 130,000 metric tons/year of bullion, an electrolitic zinc plant of 105,000 metric ton/year, and it is modernizing its lead smelter to control pollution and expand it to 190,000 metric ton/year of bullion including all the services and refinery. The Penoles complex in Torreon is the biggest in the non-ferrous metals field in Latinoamérica.]

Carbonaceous material (CM) from the Barrick Goldstrike Mines, NV, was characterized with respect to its gold sorption (preg-robbing) and gold recovery behavior. The breadth of graphite peaks measured by X-ray diffraction were used to calculate crystallite dimensions (002) of the CM. The (002) dimension was found to vary inversely with preg-robbing activity and directly with gold-recovery behavior, indicating that the degree of graphitization (maturation) experienced by the carbonaceous material is correlated with gold-loss during ore processing. The inverse correlation of preg-robbing activity was improved when percent preg-robbing was regressed against (002) crystallite size and carbon content. The (101) crystallite dimensions of all samples were calculated from laser Raman analysis, and were not found to correlate with preg-robbing behavior of the CM. BET surface area and micropore size distribution results were affected by grinding history, negating comparison of these characteristics between samples.

It is a great pleasure for me to speak-before such a prestigious group as the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers. The substance of my talk today is the handling of coal and petroleum coke: their characteristics and environmental problems, and how we were able to correct the problems, prescribe the cure and enjoy the benefits. When coke first became a by-product derived from the oil refineries everyone would have been very happy if someone had offered to take this pro- duct off their hands. Unfortunately, there was no market at that time, and no one seemed interested. Soon thereafter, it became a sellable product and began to be shipped to many countries in the world. This was when all of the pollution problems began. I will be talking briefly about some of these problems and showing a short film on this subject afterwards.

Martin County Coal Corporation is located in Martin County, Kentucky in the Appalachian coal fields, near the West Virginia border. The total leasehold covers more than 33 000 acres. Total annual production at Martin County Coal Corporation is currently 2,500,000 tons, but in certain years exceeded 3,000,000 tons. Approximately 45 percent of the annual production comes from two surface mines. The balance is produced from five underground mines. Martin County Coal Corporation's work schedule consists of 240 days/year, two nine-hours shifts/day.

In April of 1990, Homestake Mining Company began a 5,100 m (16,700 ft.) exploration drift from the Homestake Mine in Lead, South Dakota. The drift starts from the mine's 6800 level, nearly 2,100 m below the surface, and extends north to further explore occurrences of gold discovered by surface drilling. Access to the North Drift for men and materials and for disposal of waste rock is limited to the Homestake Mine's #6 Winze, which serves as the major production shaft for the deep levels of the mine. This paper will discuss the successes and challenges encountered while managing a tunneling project 2,100 m below the surface and from an active mine.

The Inter-Island Tunnel is a 7.7 kilometer (25,160 foot) long by 3.5 meter (11.5 feet) diameter concrete lined tunnel through the Cambridge formation below Boston Harbor. Constructed as part of the Boston Harbor Project, this tunnel will bring untreated wastewater from the MWRA’s South System headworks facility at Nut Island in Quincy, MA to the new Deer Island treatment plant. A myriad of problems delayed the construction of the tunnel. These problems included salt water inflows of over 22,000 liters (5,812 gallons) per minute, a major fire in the access shaft, weak rock and soil collapsing on the tunnel boring machine, and hand mining operations.

A number of solution methods for solving the nonlinear equations derived from mine ventilation networks use meshes selected from the network as the basis of the solution techniques. Mathematicians working in network theory have outlined several methods for speeding up the computations through mesh selection and ordering procedures. In the mine ventilation area, a fair amount of attention has been paid by ventilation specialists to procedures for choosing the meshes so that the computational effort is eased. However, little attention has been paid to mesh ordering methods. This paper outlines research into random mesh ordering procedures plus two non-random mesh ordering procedures and compares some results using these procedures within four solution algorithms.

NIOSH continues to conduct respirable dust control research for surface mine blasthole drilling operations. Research areas have included testing variables (shroud leakage area, drill deck cross-sectional area, shroud height, collector-to-bailing airflow ratio, etc.) that have the most impact on respirable dust control, development of a dust collector inlet hood, development of a dust collector dump point shroud, and testing of a small diameter water separating sub. This paper summarizes the results of the aforementioned research that has been completed. Additionally, past dust control research for drilling operations of both underground and surface mines completed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, created in 1910 and incorporated into NIOSH in 1997, is reviewed.

Suggestions have been made that the appraisal of mining assets using discounted cash flow techniques should be based solely on proven and probable reserves in reliance upon the widespread international recognition of uniform resource definitions. Following a review of generally accepted valuation principles, a survey of the literature and, most importantly, a review of real transactions in the open market, it is clear that valuators should not be constrained by the growing acceptance of modern mineral resource codes. On the contrary, valuation practitioners should be encouraged to examine all classes of mineralization and, after making due allowance for risk, to utilize all mineral resources as a basis for determining fair market value.
