HISTORY The Surigao Nickel Refinery of Marinduque Mining and Industrial Corporation is located on Nonoc Island off the northwestern coast of Mindanao in the Philippines. Nonoc Island is part of the Surigao Mineral Reservation which had been identified as early as 1912. Initial interest in these deposits was due to their iron content, and their value as a nickel deposit was not seriously entertained until the late 1950's. The Philippine government undertook extensive test pitting and sampling programmes at that time and in the early sixties Marinduque became involved in helping to establish firmer ore reserves. Evaluations of the test pitting programme indicated reserves of 75,000,000 tonnes of ore averaging 1.22% Ni, 0.1% Co and 38.5% Fe. The Philippine government called for bids on the reservation in 1962 and Marinduque and Sherritt Gordon carried out some feasibility studies for the recovery of nickel from the deposit. However, it was not until 1968 that Marinduque was granted proper authority to exploit the Surigao deposits. Marinduque and Sherritt then entered into an agreement which allowed Marinduque to utilize a process developed by Sherritt for treating lateritic ores. During 1968, a 25 st/d pilot plant was erected in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta for the purpose of modelling all process steps. A 10,000 tonne ore sample was sent from Nonoc as feed stock for the pilot plant.

Measurements of the electrophoretic mobility of bastnaesite in aqueous solutions of sodium nitrate reveal that the isoelectric point (iep) of this cerium fluocarbonate occurs at about pH 9.3. These results also indicate that the pH affects significantly the electrophoretic mobility of bastnaesite, which becomes more positive as the pH decreases and more negative as the pH increases from the iep. Computations of solid-solution equilibria for the bastnaesite-H2O system closed to the atmosphere as a function of pH indicate that cerium fluoride precipitates in acidic solutions, whereas cerium hydroxide precipitates in alkaline solutions. When the initial amount of bastnaesite is fixed at 0.05 wt.% (the solids concentration used for electrokinetic experiments), these computations reveal that bastnaesite is the only solid phase in the pH range from 5.75 to 8.55, it coexists with CeF3(s) between pH 5.22 and pH 5.74, and with Ce(OH)3(s) between pH 8.56 and pH 10.12. Cerium fluoride and cerium hydroxide are the only solid phase below pH 5.2 and above pH 10.2, respectively. According to these computations, the dissolution-precipitation processes that occur when bastnaesite is equilibrated in aqueous solutions at different pH values determine the solid phases present in the system. In turn, these processes must affect the electrokinetic potential at the solid-solution interface, and they must be considered for explaining electrokinetic measurements as a function of pH when bastnaesite is the original solid phase in aqueous suspensions.

A mathematical model is proposed as a general formulation for the analysis and simulation of once-through crushing machines. Methods are described which can be used to estimate parameters of the proposed model from experimental data, thus minimizing reliance on backcalculation. The applicability of the model is demonstrated in the analysis and simulation of laboratory and full scale double roll crushers, and with evidence given for a laboratory scale cone crusher. An extension of the model for closed circuit crushing is also described.

Coal mine bumps, the violent failures of overstressed coal, present a safety hazard to miners when longwall mining is conducted in deep, bump-prone coal mines. Two different longwall gate entry systems were evaluated in a southern Appalachian coal mine located in the Pocahontas No. 3 coalbed under approximately 610 m (2000 ft) of overburden that included a massive sandstone member. Both gate entry systems employed a center abutment pillar flanked by yield pillars. The original design used a 24.4-m (80 ft) square abutment pillar, while the new design employed a 36.6-m x 54.9-m (120 ft x 180 ft) abutment pillar. Rock mechanics instrumentation data analysis and in-mine observations indicated that this increase in abutment pillar size significantly decreased bump potential. The new design in worst-case conditions increased effective bearing area 62%, with only a 9% increase in gate entry system width, and eliminated face bumps that were experienced with the original gate entry design.

Alunorte is a metallurgical-grade alumina refinery located in northern Brazil. This plant which was designed to produce 1.1 million mtpy of calcined alumina, started operation in July 1995. A process information system was installed before refinery start-up. It has been a main factor in process improvements, which resulted in an increase in production from 1.1 to 1.5 million mtpy. This system has been particularly useful for analyzing data and allowing retrieval of data by process engineers. This paper describes how a quality monitoring system to evaluate all aspects and stages of production, as well as alumina silo level and blending percentage, was developed. This system was designed to give support to ISO 9002 certification, which happened in December 1998. The quality monitoring system was developed using Microsoft Excel 7.0 and makes extensive use of VBA macro. The primary users of the system are shift foremen, managers and engineers, who use it to track the process and avoid variations in alumina quality.

INTRODUCTION Paradoxically, it has been found that the people who are the most aware of the origin, mineralogy and composition of bauxite are also the people who are the least aware of how bauxite composition affects its treatment by the Bayer process. These people are the exploration and mining geologists normally associated with aluminum producing companies. The purpose of this paper is to give some idea of how the concentration and physical nature of the different minerals found in bauxites affect the operation of the Bayer process used to extract their alumina content. The bauxites we will consider here will be only the tropical bauxites such as occurring in Jamaica, various countries in South America i.e. Guyana, Surinam, Brazil, African bauxites, Malaysia and in Australia. When we speak of the Bayer process, it will be the North American version of the Bayer process using low caustic concentrations and bauxite digestion temperatures varying between 130° to 250°C. TABLE 1 shows the minerals and elements of interest occurring in tropical bauxites. The minerals and elements listed in the table do not by any means represent all of those identified in bauxites. Using mass spectrographic analysis on six bauxites from different geographic locations, we managed to identify between 50-60 different elements. Fortunately, only about 13-14 of these elements possess the necessary chemical properties to be able to accumulate in caustic Bayer solutions. The remainder are either not attacked, or form insoluble reaction products with some main liquor component, i.e., hydroxide, aluminate or carbonate, or reprecipitate with alumina trihydrate during the precipitation stage.

INTRODUCTION The finding or acquisition of ore bodies containing 200,000 opt gold and greater is becoming more difficult. There are more investors and small heap leach operators who have or can raise the capital to make the investments in the large ore bodies. Echo Bay Mines' approach has been to regionally develop small ore bodies, two or three in the same geographic location, which when considered together contain over 200,000 opt gold. CONCEPT The "world class" ore body syndrome, which many large gold producing companies maintain, can restrict company growth if the finding or acquisition of these large ore bodies is not forthcoming. Another approach has been taken by Echo Bay Mines. The concept is to regionally develop two or three small ore bodies suitable for processing with portable equipment. The systematic scheduling of mining, processing with a single flexible processing plant using the same management/ operator team can reduce your overall investment. The initial selection of mining and crushing equipment suitable for sun11 open pit operations is essential. A very viable option in the mining sequence is to use contract mining/crushing/screening/agglomerating and stacking. This option also lowers your initial capital investment and increases the flexibility in mining as you move from one mining operation to another. LOCATION AND SEQUENCING One single small ore body of itself is not attractive enough for the large producer. The recovery of the initial capital investment, although very rapid, does not make a viable project. The only alternative is to find two or more small ore bodies close enough geographically to each other so that the same management/operator team can be used to run the operations as each is put into operation. Echo Bay Mines has regionally located several ore bodies ranging in recoverable ounces up to 100,000 oz. These small separate ore bodies, located within a 30-mile radius of each other, for planning purposes have been considered as one single ore body. The first small ore body has the initial burden to recover the capital invested in the office, laboratory, power plant and processing plant. Other capital investments such as water supply, access and haul road, fencing, septic system, pads and ponds are reoccurring at each mine site. The first small ore body must recover the initial capital investment in the movable structures as well as the reoccurring capital investment in the fixed structures very rapidly. A total capital recovery time of 6 to 9 months should be used as an economic decision point for both choosing which small ore body should be processed first, and what the plant design capability should be. The sequencing of the small mines is very critical. All the fixed structures mentioned above must be installed at the second mine site before the first mine has been mined out. The ideal sequencing will allow for only one month between shutdown of the first small mine and production from the second. SPECIFIC OPERATION Echo Bay Mines has completed the construction of the Illipah Mine located in White Pine County, Nevada, with this small mine sequence approach. The Illipah Mine is a 40,000 ounce recoverable gold ore body. This ore body met all the necessary requirements. Sulfur removal from high sulfur coal has several objectives including: a) reduction of the atmospheric load that contributes to the problem of acid precipitation; b) reduction of ash, which contributes to decreased energy transfer in boilers, as well as ash disposal; and c) alleviation of the social and economic dislocations related to uneven geographical distribution of sulfur in coal reserves. Cost in relation to the value of refined coal will govern the development of an emerging coal refining industry. Estimation of the premium paid by power companies for coal with a low sulfur content is a good estimate of the value that will be added as the result of refining. Estimates of premiums paid in 1984 are $28.65/t ($26 per st) for reduction of total sulfur from 370 to 1% S and greater than $28.65/t ($26 per st) for removal below 170 sulfur.

Appreciation and awareness of the unique nature of mineral investment and ultimate development of a mine are crucial in promoting sustainable development. Special characteristics of mineral development include high capital intensive, long pre-production period, high risk, and the unavoidable ?economic? depletion. This paper examines ways to integrate these unique attributes of the mineral industry into the educational process, so that a properly advised and knowledgeable culture in terms of a sustainable mineral industry can be developed. Specific approaches are investigated in order to achieve this objective. These include a stochastic evaluation of a mineral investment proposal, adding a premium to the cost of capital that is used for valuation process, and internalizing incidental costs to the private cost function, thereby realizing the true (vs. apparent) marginal social cost of the proposed development. Undoubtedly, a total evaluation of any mineral project that accounts for both tangible and intangible parameters will contribute to sustainable development objectives. By incorporating the practical application of apparent theoretical topics such as risk, probability, and externality, and their relevance and impact on mineral lifecycle (prospecting, exploration, development, exploitation, use, and ultimate disposal) into the educational process, it is hoped that a generation of technocrats and decision makers that are familiar with and concerned about sustainable development will emerge.

This paper details the development of a functional work index that characterises the relationship between the energy that is imparted by a Roller Press into materials, against the resultant size reduction achieved. Such a Roller Press work index is necessary for this new grinding technology to differentiate it from Bond's grinding work index, and to clear up confusion that arises with such a comparison to Bond. The energy usage in a Roller Press does not follow Bond's "Third Theory of Comminution" but rather Rittinger's theory of new surface creation. The relationships for such a work index have been developed from the viewpoint of an equipment manufacturer with the hope that they will be of assistance to the minerals industry in the design of grinding circuits incorporating Roller Press comminution. The work index contains modification factors that reflects the effect of oversize, fines, moisture. closed-circuit operation and roll surface characteristics on the energy verses size reduction relationship. It has evolved from the results obtained from testing of a wide range of ore and mineral types that include bauxite, coal, kimberlite, limestone, iron and chrome ores, base metal and gold ores. The results show that even for such a diverse range of materials, they all demonstrate similarities of behaviour when comminuted in a Roller Press.

The Nordhalde is a waste rock pile resulting from uranium mining near Ronneburg, Germany. The pile contains over 27 million m3 of waste rock. Typical seepage water has a pH of 2.7 and a sulfate concentration of 10,000 mg/L. Geochemical investigations of the Nordhalde from 1993 to 1996 included drillholes, test pits, ABA and metals analyses, column tests, and a detailed review of the construction history of the pile. In 1996, eight drillholes were instrumented for monitoring oxygen and temperature. Monitoring continued for a fill year. Hourly temperature and pressure readings were taken by automated data recorder. Oxygen concentrations were measured three times per week, and periodic gas samples were obtained for complete analysis. The resulting data set is believed to be one of the most comprehensive of its kind. Effects noted elsewhere, such as thermal convection, are evident. However, unlike other data in the literature, the NordhaIde data shows a strong seasonal effect, with convection dominating oxygen transport only in the winter months. Analysis of the data allowed the amount of contaminants associated with ongoing and historical oxidation to be compared, and results were used to assess the potential effectiveness of proposed remediation measures.

Ore and waste haulage usually constitute one of the major cost items in the operation of an open pit mine. This has always been true at the Chino mine, one of Kennecott Copper Corporation's western mines, located in southwestern New Mexico. The Chino Mines Division is an integrated operation. The open pit mine, dump leaching operation, and a precipitating plant are located at Santa Rita, New Mexico, and a power plant, mill, smelter, and fire refinery are located in Hurley, New Mexico, about nine miles south of the mine. Approximately 22,000 tons of ore are mined and processed each day; in addition, approximately 42,000 tons of waste are removed from the pit. Originally the pit was located along the side of Santa Rita Creek but it has deepened and expanded so that at the present time, it could better be described as a nearly circular pit about one to 1.5 miles in diameter. The bottom is at an elevation of 5750 feet, the west rim near the ore gathering yard is at an elevation of 6230 feet, and the highest bench on the east side of the pit is at an elevation of 6750 feet, giving a vertical mining depth of 1000 feet. The train waste dumps reach a maximum elevation of 6580 feet. At the present time, Chino uses electric locomotives, off-the- highway trucks, and a skip system for mine haulage.

The Flambeau volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit located in northwestern Wisconsin occurs within the southern lobe of the Canadian Precambrian Shield. The steeply dipping tabular body occurs in a complex pile of cyclic schistose intermediate to felsic fragmental volcanics. No chloritic alteration pipe is recognized but adjacent rocks have undergone magnesia metasomatism and subsequently were metamorphosed to the upper greenschist and lower amphibolite facies. Although modest in size the deposit is of special interest in that it has an extensive and well preserved supergene enrichment blanket. Economic minerals found within a pyritized quartz-sericite schist are chalcocite and bornite overlying primary chalcopyrite.

Once exploration is complete, "winning" of the ore can be viewed as fundamentally a bulk handling proposition. Whether it is to strip, break, size, extract, load, haul, or even process, the success of each of these phases will depend upon how effectively one can utilize-the methods and tools that are available in bulk handling. Since as much as 30 to 60% of the total delivered price of raw materials can be attributed to handling and shipping (ref. 1), this expenditure may spell the success or failure of an entire mining venture. In fact, it has become increasingly evident that handling and shipping are so intimately associated with mining that only when they are duly considered throughout the mine-to -smelter master plan as an integral part of a total system can an optimum operation be expected and the most economical ton of ore obtained, this total systems approach should not only take in handling and haulage in and out of the mine, but also storage and transfer at the terminals (ref. 2,3,t), including ship and barge loading and unloading which are likewise a major consideration (ref. 5). Much has been developed during the past century in bulk handling, particularly in its expanding use in the mining industry. In view of the major role bulk handling has played and will continue to play in mining, in commemorating AIME's centennial, this paper will attempt to outline the state-of-the-art at this three-quarter point of the 20th century - one that is marked by its industrial revolution and rapidly accelerating technological advances. Bulk handling systems Although many developments in bulk handling are worth noting. The most significant during the past three-quarters of a century are: the total systems approach to solving problems, automation, the increase in speed and capacity.

The efficiencies of plant-scale comminution processes are often evaluated by various indices calculated and/or measured somewhat independently of the performance of any associated downstream froth flotation processes. To compare specific comminution factors, such as energy utilization, media consumption and equipment utilization time, comparisons of comminution efficiency independent of flotation behavior are appropriate. However, as increasingly detailed plant-level information is gathered on the joint and highly interactive nature of comminution and froth flotation, it is becoming even more obvious that knowing and using simple efficiency indices are not enough. What is needed are more performance-related measures of the efficiencies of the combined size reduction froth flotation system for effective plant-level economic optimization to occur. The purpose of this paper is to present examples of some of the important interactions that influence the joint efficiencies of size reduction and froth flotation processes.

While the oil shale resources of the US are becoming increasingly known, few people in this country are aware of the extensive worldwide occurrence of this resource. Two recent international conferences* confirmed the growing worldwide interest in oil shales, both as future and current energy sources. The 1981 conference noted the difficulty in characterizing worldwide oil shale resources because of lack of common terminology in reporting both assay value and resource potential. Assay value is variously reported as: •US gallons per short ton; •Imperial gallons per metric ton; •Liters per metric ton; •Liters per cubic meter; •Weight percent oil; and •Volume percent oil. Oil shale resources are variously reported in barrels, short tons of oil shale, metric tons of oil shale, and cubic meters of shale oil. Worldwide petroleum shortages sparked interest in alternate energy resources including oil shales. While petroleum supplies appear to have stabilized, at least for a while, high costs are affecting the balance of payment index of many countries, resulting in a continued search for local energy resources. Kerogen is the organic constituent of oil shale and may be the most abundant form of hydrocarbon on earth, possibly exceeding coal occurrences and far more abundant than naturally-occurring petroleum resources. Oil shale, by one name or another, is widespread and is known to exist in more than 38 countries (Table 1). Oil shale industries have existed in at least 14 countries at one time or another. Many predated the Drake oil discovery in Pennsylvania in 1859, and most were unable to compete with natural oil; these operations either converted to its use or closed. At the present time shale oil is being produced on a commercial scale only in the USSR and in China. Only very rough estimates of grade and quantity are available for most of the worldwide shale occurrences since only a few deposits have been thoroughly explored. The Green River Formation of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming is an exception. For many years this oil shale deposit has been described as the largest single concentration of hydrocarbon material in the world. With increasing world interest, larger deposits may yet be found. In 1965, the US Geological Survey published an in-place world oil shale estimate. This study, while made some 16 years ago, is still a reasonable order-of-magnitude estimate. Although exploration and evaluation are underway and a few oil shale deposits have been appraised, information on which to evaluate most worldwide oil shale occurrences has improved little since 1965. Underground roof falls can have devastating effects on the safety of operations personnel, and equipment, and seriously impact production. Immediate steps are usually taken to danger off and secure the area while clean-up efforts are designed and implemented. A critical step, often overlooked due to production demand, is the determination of - why the roof fall occurred so that additional occurrences can be avoided in future developments or what measures can be taken to identify areas that have similar ?symptoms?? Forensic engineering includes the investigation of materials, products, structures or components that fail or do not operate/function as intended. The authors define forensics in ground control engineering as the study of evidence discovered while examining underground roof falls by applying expert observational techniques and established mining engineering principles to determine the probable cause, hypothesize solutions, and design engineering safeguards to prevent reoccurrences. Simply stated, the primary steps in the forensics of underground roof fall techniques are: ?Assess regional and local conditions prior to the event. ? Assess post-event conditions. ? Hypothesize plausible ways in which the pre-event conditions became the post-event conditions. ?Search for evidence that either denies or supports the various hypotheses. ?Apply engineering skill to relate the various facts and evidence into a cohesive scenario of how the event may have occurred. This paper details the proposed technique by utilizing a roof fall case study that required the examination of five primary factors: mine design parameters, excavation geology, method of excavation, method of support, and mining cycle times.

This is a summary of what has happened to the domestic production of two industrial minerals vital to a healthy US economy: fluorspar and barite. A few years ago we were self-sufficient in both minerals and good ore reserves still exist. "Coal mine ranks No.1 among the 6 major high-risk industries, so it is no doubt that the senior managers in the coal mine bear more stress than other industry executives. The massive working stress results in serious influences on the physical and mental health of the senior managers of coal mine, which might also induce the safety risk in the coal mine. Therefore, to evaluate the senior managers’ working stress and put forward strategies of mitigating the stress is of great theoretical and practical significance in improving the physical and mental health of the senior managers and reducing the safety risk in the coal mine. The research on the working stress has been made in the western countries for almost 50 years, China began the research in the mid and late 1990s, the research is spread across multiple industries including education, medical treatment, computer and aviation. However, there is little research on the senior managers’ working stress of the coal mine, so the available literatures are few. In the paper, we, based on the working stress model of Robbins and through questionnaire survey, analyze the element composition of the senior managers’ working stress of the coal mine; then, we construct the evaluation indicator system of the senior managers’ working stress of the coal mine based on the individual factor, organization factor and environment factor; after that, we determine weights of each evaluation indicators by using the improved triangular fuzzy number weight method, and set up the evaluation model of the senior managers’ working stress of the coal mine on the basis of the fuzzy comprehensive assessment method. At last, in accordance with the model, we evaluate and analyze the working stress for the senior managers of some typical coal mines, and diagnoses the major sources and intensities of the senior managers’ working stress, and then propose corresponding strategies of mitigating the stress."

The El Boleo Copper Project is currently in the final design stages for development of a 3-MM-tonne/yr underground copper mine located in Baja California, Mexico. The nearly horizontal mineralized zones are amenable to exploitation by conventional mechanized coal mining technology using continuous miners, shuttle cars, and belt haulage. The mine design resembles a typical full-extraction coal mining operation utilizing a sequence of mains, sub-mains and production panels. Due to numerous faults, mining will be conducted as several small adjacent mines accessed through adits from large arroyos cutting through the mine area. Up to four seams may be mined in some areas with a maximum overburden depth of about 250 m. The ore zone is relatively weak and plastic, subject to extensive creep over time. The mine workings will pass through areas of historical shortwall mining panels where the ground has flowed into old entries and gob areas, and then reconsolidated. A small test mine was developed to evaluate mechanical cutting performance, roof-bolt anchorage capacities, roof and pillar stability and caving behavior. In-mine measurements were combined with two- and three-dimensional FLAC models to evaluate alternative development and production pillar designs. The paper will discuss the various factors influencing ground stability at the El Boleo project and the strategies employed in developing a suitable ground control design.
