In Europe, novel low-cost excavator-mounted Multi Tool Miner (MTM) systems, consisting of cutter head, hammer, bucket and drill attachments permit one unit to perform multiple tasks replacing several purpose-built machines. At the Weser Tunnel in Germany, cross-passages between the twin tubes were excavated in frozen ground with a remote-controlled mini-excavator equipped with a quick-change cutter head, ripper tooth and bucket. In Switzerland at the N2 interstate near Basel, W. Dietrich AG enlarged a 2-lane tunnel to three lanes with a cutter head mounted on a special excavator. Blasting and heavy hammers were not permitted due to the closeness of the “live” twin tube. At the N20 Zurich bypass, the Joint Venture of Jaeger, Frutingerand AHB excavates highway tunnels, some with extremely large cross sections, conventionally. A cutter head mounted on an excavator removes the rock shattered by blasting precisely to the pay line, thus preserving the rock’s self-supporting capacity preventing subsidence and damages to water resources and buildings on the surface under low overburden.

The Magenta underground station was constructed in the heart of Paris in saturated soft soil and at shallow depth. To investigate the surface settlement and the deformation of the concrete liner, innovative techniques combined with a vast campaign of monitoring were applied. The monitoring data and a simple three-dimensional ?nite element analysis were used to assess the accuracy of the two-dimensional ?nite element model originally utilized in the design of the station. The deformation of the concrete liner was monitored using vibrating wire extensometers. Their performance was validated by the data obtained from monitoring and also by a simpli?ed ?nite element analysis.

Size distributions and liberation spectra were measured in samples taken from 10 streams in a taconite milling circuit under normal operating conditions. The size distributions were deter- mined by sieving and the liberation spectra by image analysis using the linear-intercept method with proper stereological correction. The measured data were used to validate a simulation of the milling circuit using MODSIM which included the calculation of both size distributions and liberation spectra. Both the measured data and the simulator showed that liberated magnetite was returned to the mill in the cyclone underflow. The simulation will be used to improve the economic performance of the plant.

In a shearer longwall mining operation, the longwall hits are responsible for breaking into and chipping the broken coal blocks away from the coal face. However, underground observations found that the bits being used were working under various degrees of wear. This wear can be reduced by using better-designed longwall bits and by properly selecting shearer operating parameters. A computer program was developed to simulate the performance of the longwall bits. The information required by the program are the shape of the bit head, the installation of the bits on the drum and the operation parameters. Through the simulations, the main factors affecting the bit-wearing process are identified. Suggestions are also made for improving the design of the longwall bits.

INTRODUCTION The Washington Camp - Duquesne mining district is located on the east flank of the Patagonia Mountains, 98 kilometers south of Tucson and within 5 kilometers of the International border (Figure 1). Since the development of high-grade silver and copper ores by settlers in 1862, the Washington Camp - Duquesne district has yielded an estimated 450,000 metric tons of ore. The mined ores averaged 8% zinc, 2% copper, 3% lead and 124 grams of silver. REGIONAL GEOLOGY The Patagonia batholith, of Laramide age, crops out in the core of the Patagonia Mountains intruding Precambrian granite, Paleozoic sediments and Mesozoic igneous, volcanic and clastic rocks. This granodioritic batholith lies in a northwest-trending zone of Laramide plutonic rocks, which can be traced for a distance of 320 kilometers from the Nacozari district in Sonora, Mexico to the Silver Bell Mountains west of Tucson, Arizona. Several major porphyry copper systems occur within this plutonic belt including the Red Mountain deposit found at the northern end of the Patagonia Mountains. Data from more than 80 mineral deposits within the Patagonia Mountains show metal zoning symmetrical to the Patagonia granodiorite (Graybeal, 1975). Disseminated copper-molybdenum deposits occur within the batholith. Pyrometa-somatic, limestone replacement and vein deposits of copper, lead, zinc and silver occur in the wallrocks adjacent to the. granodiorite and epithermal manganese-silver deposits occur at the outer periphery of economic mineralization. GEOLOGY OF THE WASHINGTON CAMP - DUQUESNE DISTRICT Stratigraphy Nearly 900 meters of miogeosynclinal Permian and Pennsylvanian sediments are exposed in the district (Figure 2). In addition, 700 meters of older Paleozoic rocks crop out 6 kilometers north of the district. The Paleozoic rocks occur in fault contact with a sequence of Triassic-Jurassic pyroclastic and flow rocks, ranging in composition from latite to rhyolite.

INTRODUCTION The art of raise boring has seen rapid development and use in underground mines both for primary development and production during the past 10 years. The intensive full scale tests by a major mining company in the Precambrian rocks of the Sudbury district of Ontario, Canada, have lead the way to the general acceptance of the raise drills. The rock successfully raise bored in the Sudbury area has compressive strengths varying from 30,000 to 50,000 p.s.i. As a result of the intensive study, it became evident to many mining companies that raise boring could be adapted to many mining systems. Many companies have modified their planned mining methods to incorporate raise boring. The result has been a more rapid development of their mine and naturally, an economic advantage to them. In conjunction with the acceptance of the raise drills, the range of equipment has broadened in terms of size, capability and efficiency. The concept of raise drilling and the general arrangement of the equipment has seen little change. At some locations there have been reported successes of drilling pilot holes up

Increased clearance was required in two railroad tunnels that were built about the time of the Civil War. Clearance infringements, whether they be excavation tights or caused by ice accumulation, reduce tunnel serviceability. Achieving increased clearance often means disturbing the ground and old ground support structures. Access and transportation needs dictate how and when the work can be carried out, and strongly influence the design approach and the methods used by the contractor to execute the work. This paper explores the pertinent considerations of the owner, the designer, the field inspection team, and the contractor in bringing this project to a successful conclusion.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) and Diesel Controls Limited evaluated a new diesel emission control system on an underground mine vehicle. The system was a catalyzed ceramic wall-flow diesel particulate filter (CDPF) combined with an catalytic converter, or diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC). This paper describes the design and installation of the system on a load-haul-dump (LHD). The results of screening tests conducted by the USBM are also given. The screening tests were conducted to determine if the device's particulate collection efficiency, regeneration temperature, and effect on gaseous hydrocarbon (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions changed over the period it was being used. The system was removed from the LHD and evaluated in the laboratory after operating for 308 and 1200 hours. After 308 hours of operation, laboratory testing revealed its particulate collection efficiency varied from 41.0 to 93.5 percent, depending on engine operating conditions. Its regeneration temperature was about 415° C. It reduced HC emissions by up to 97.6 percent, and CO by up to 95.0 percent. When tested in the laboratory after operating for 1200 hours on the vehicle, no significant change in performance was observed.

The mining industry appears to be slowly rebounding. But many individuals and company officials are still smarting from the beating they received during the recent recession. As a result, companies have taken the "lean and mean" approach. As pointed out at the Oct. 24-26, 1984 SME-AIME Fall Meeting in Denver, CO, companies are placing more emphasis on optimizing their operations through more efficient mining and processing technologies and equipment. Empathizing with the mining industry's woes was the meeting's welcoming luncheon speaker, John D. Withrow, Jr., executive vice president product development for Chrysler Corp. Withrow paralleled Chrysler's problems of a few years ago with the current problems facing the US mining industry. He said Chrysler's come-back centered around its engineering and technical personnel, who regained "their seat at the head table." "In short," Withrow said, "we had lost the competitive edge. By cutting costs and people and improving our products we got everybody to believe we could." The 2700 participants at the Fall Meeting attended technical sessions geared toward turning mining back into a productive and profitable industry. Sessions and symposia included papers on precious metals extraction, crushing and grinding innovations, geomechanics, environmental control, health and safety, and various commodities. Computers Gain Mining Acceptance High tech has reached mining. As evidenced by many papers, computers have become valuable tools in many applications. These include tailings ponds operation and waste management; truck dispatching; mine design, simulation, and scheduling; monitoring; and reclamation. Mine planning is generally labor intensive and requires a considerable amount of the planner's time. P. K. Chatterjee, X. Chung, and Y. Jianjy described a computer-generated interactive graphics approach to under-ground coal mine planning that lessens the manhours involved in producing plans. The computer program examined exploratory borehole information. This included coal seam thickness, tonnage, quality constraints, and the nature of their distribution. Layout designs were then initiated and a probabilistic simulation performed to determine production levels of different extraction strategies. The interactive graphics approach gives planners the ability to quickly evaluate several layout alternatives and select the best one. For surface coal mines, M. A. White, of Arch Minerals Corp., explained several computer programs that aided in his company's surface mine plans. Several drill hole database and modeling pack¬ages are available. But Arch tech¬nicians developed specific pro¬grams for model strip areas. They were used to form long-term pro¬jections for various area and semi¬area stripping operations. They also generated reports on yard¬age, tonnage, quality, and ratio in¬formation. The information is used in budgeting, to compare mine plans, and to analyze acqui¬sition candidates. While computer-based truck dispatching systems have been used in mining for some time, earlier systems were run on ex¬pensive mainframe or high per¬formance minicomputers. As such, computer-based truck dis¬patching systems have been too expensive for all but the largest mines. Recently, however, a microcomputer-based system, af¬fordable to smaller mine opera¬tors, has become technologically feasible. Y. C. Kim and W. E. Kolb re¬ported on a simulated microcom¬puter system that uses strategi¬cally placed signposts in the pit area to automatically detect truck movements. A microprocessor in the signpost sends information to the microcomputer. The computer determines the truck's assign¬ment and alerts the dispatcher. He radios the driver his assign¬ment. In addition to the technical pa¬pers, an introductory short course on microcomputers was offered at the meeting. L. M. Kass and J. P. The present study has investigated the bioleachability of low-grade and high-grade pyritic gold ores and the extraction of gold from the leach residues of bioleaching with thiourea solutions. Final gold extractions as high as 96% were obtained from the high-grade ore and above 93% from the low-grade ore. The gold extraction was found to follow the extent of pyrite biooxidation. Using a cyclic voltammetric technique and carbon-paste-FeS2 electrode it was found that the semiconductor pyrite oxidation involves many intermediate electrochemical reactions. Furthermore, the oxidation is solid-state diffusion controlled as suggested by chronoamperometric and chronopotentiometric measurements.Using Sand's approach, the activation energy of solid-state diffusion biooxidation of pyrite was determined to be AEa=22.4 kJ. A generalized model for the mechanisms of pyrite oxidation has been presented.

An exploration program which covered an area of about 17 000 km2(6564 sq miles), was carried out between 1966 and 1969 by the United Nations project named "Mineral Survey of the Azuero Area." The target became Cerro Petaquilla, Province of Colon, Panama. See Fig. 1. Regional exploration led to discoveries of many geochemical anomalies and minor mineralization, but it was only toward the end of the project that a promising target was indicated by a large zone of comer and molybdenum anomalies in stream sediments in a remote 1, area between the Cordillera and the Caribbean coast. Follow-up surveys established the presence of porphyry-type copper mineralization in the area now known as Cerro Petaquilla.

A major bauxite belt was discovered and evaluated from 1969 to 1974 by P. T. Alcoa Minerals of Indonesia in West Kalimantan, Indonesia. The proven reserves of beneficiated bauxite are 800 million tons averaging 38.6% AA1203 and 3.0% RSiO2. Inferred reserves of washed bauxite are in excess of 2 billion tons. The bauxite occurs as capping of low lying hills which were formed during the post Paleogene peneplaination stage. The overburden varies from 0.6 to 3.8 meters and the nodular bauxite horizon from 2.2 to 5.2 meters. The deposits were formed by the in situ weathering of predominantly acidic and basic intrusive rocks.

Certain bituminous coals are known to contain appreciable quantities of natural fossil or subfossil resin. Such resinous coals are found in the western US, particularly the Wasatch Plateau coalfield of UT. Some of the seams in this field contain an average of 5% resin. This fossil resin has been recovered by gravity and/or flotation processes since 1929. Resin concentrates thus produced are of low quality and are usually refined by solvent extraction. The purified resins are of commercial importance in the adhesive, coating, rubber. and ink industries, etc. An improved flotation technique has been developed which involves ozone conditioning to selectively float resin from high-volatile bituminous coal. In this work, a sample (of about 100kg) of an ore considered as smectitic, not yet industrialized, from Lages-SC-Brazil, was tested for evaluation of its industrial applications. First, we characterize them by XRD, DTA, FRX, and CEC analysis. After this, the smectitic clay was changed to sodium form by treatment with sodium carbonate. Then, the homoionic sodium clay was tested for iron ore pelletizing agent, as binder of foundry sands, and drilling mud with good results.

INTRODUCTION Semiautogenous (SAG) grinding technology first started to be seriously considered for comminution circuit design in the mid-1960s as an alternative to the three-stage crushing circuits and rod-ball mill circuits in vogue at the time. Since this time the application of SAG mill technology has become widespread with over 250 mills larger than 20 feet in diameter sold (Jones 2002). The vast majority of concentrators constructed over the past quarter century have utilized SAG mill technology, and a SAG-based comminution-based circuit is generally the first choice considered for new projects. Since the first generation of SAG milling technology was applied, many lessons have been learned, and new supporting technologies have emerged which make the design, installation and operation of SAG &-based grinding circuits more robust and efficient. This paper will discuss the current status of SAG and associated technologies. MILL MECHANICAL DESIGN ISSUES Table 1 summarizes the manner in which SAG design capability has evolved over the past 30 years. Increases in mill diameter came slowly as the industry took a wait-and-see attitude as the technology of larger mill diameters was advanced. The first 32-foot- diameter mill was ordered in 1969. It was not until 1979 that the technology jumped to the 34-foot-diameter mill and 1988 for the first 36-foot-diameter mill. The first 38- and 40-foot-diameter mills were both ordered in 1996. At least five 38-foot-diameter and two 40-foot-diameter mills will be in operation by mid-2004. Advances in structural analytical techniques and increased computational power, coupled with field measurements of large operating mills, have increased the confidence of the mill suppliers in their designs and the operating companies in the viability of larger diameter mills. The Acid Drainage Technology Initiative-Metal Mining Sector (ADTI-MMS) has established a Pit Lake Committee to enhance the science and understanding for the long-term management of pit lakes. Participation in this new committee is from members of federal and state agencies, industry, and academia, including numerous individuals representing 10 states. Work has begun on a pit lake literature search and review, database, classification, and sampling and monitoring procedures document. Coordination with the International Network for Acid Prevention (INAP) has been established. Future work will include preparing a prediction and assumption verification document, a report identifying variables upon which water quality is dependent, and an applied remediation technologies document, including an evaluation of the effects of backfilling.

For gold recovery, a Chinese refractory, high-sulfur gold concentrate was subjected to biooxidation with high pulp density in a single stirred-tank reactor. The flotation concentrate contained 36.9 percent sulfur (S) and 33.9 percent iron (Fe). Different experimental regimes for biooxidation were applied. With a mixed culture and by controlling the amount of addition of the gold ores and the pH of the biooxidation system, maximum iron oxidation of 82.6 percent and sulfur oxidation of 79.3 percent were achieved. The experimental results indicate that the pH control was beneficial to the biooxidation of this concentrate. Approximately 28.4 percent of elemental sulfur (S8) was found in the oxidizing slags. Two dissolution mechanisms of elemental sulfur are proposed: (1) FeS2 → S80 → S2O32− → SO42− and (2) FeS2 → S80 → SO42−. The high pH had a positive effect on the reduction of the S8. The results of thermodynamic analysis indicate that as an oxidant the dissolved oxygen can effectively reduce the Gibbs free energy of the pyrite oxidation process and, compared with the reaction of ferric iron as the single oxidant, the oxidation of pyrite is easier. The efficiency of the gold recovery was related to the iron oxidation as well as the sulfur oxidation. Gold and silver recoveries of 92.4 percent and 66.4 percent, respectively, were achieved.

Problems encountered in barite flotation from various waste materials such as spent drilling muds are likely to be closely connected with the effect of chemical additives and metal ions present either added or present as contaminants, on the flotation. Fuerstenau and Palmer (1976) have studied in detail the adsorption of multivalent cations onto oxide and silicate minerals. It was observed that the adsorption of a multivalent metal species exhibits a sharp pH dependence which is related to the formation of hydroxy complexes of the metal ions in solution. Investigations on the recovery of barite from tailings ponds and mining wastes (Sullivan and Lamot, 1981) have shown that such barite materials can contain large quantities of carbonate and silicate minerals (including clay minerals). Also iron oxide slimes can be present. From these substances cations such as Ca2+, Mg2+, Fe2+ and A13+ can potentially dissolve and be present in the aqueous phase accompanying the various minerals. These ions and their hydrolysis products can have a substantial effect on any subsequent flotation scheme. The present study investigates the effect of the noted ions on both the stability and electrokinetic behavior of barite suspensions.

Cementitious seals are made of foamed cements with strength ranging from 100 to 600 psi. These cementitious seals are usually used at locations where the seal will be subjected to some convergence, assuming that this material can absorb entry closure without compromising the structural integrity of the seal. Prior to 2006, Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM) conducted full-scale tests on various cementitious seals designed to meet or exceed the 20-psi horizontal static load requirements of the old 30 CFR1 75.335. Both hydrostatic and dynamic loading tests were conducted. The structural response (pressure and displacement readings) obtained from these tests were recorded. The stability of the cementitious seal is based on balancing the load applied to the face of the seal from the explosion against the shearing resistance at the seal/rock interface. Therefore, the properties of the seal/rock interface, such as stiffness, cohesion, friction, etc. are critical to determine the stability of a cementitious seal. These properties are usually assumed by the researchers in their models. This paper emphasizes the importance of having the correct properties of seal/rock interface in the numerical modeling. FLAC 3D models were developed to simulate Celuseal2 cementitious seals subjected to both hydrostatic and dynamic loadings. Using the hydrostatic and dynamic loading test data conducted at LLEM, the static and dynamic properties of the seal/rock interface were back calculated. The FLAC 3D models showed good agreement with the test results.
