The handling of fine coal is an important issue for both the coal and utility industries. Reconstitution of fine coal in the form of pellets or briquettes would be desirable if it could be done economically. This paper evaluates the effectiveness of three binders, asphalt-emulsion, corn starch and Brewex, informing pellets of ultrafine clean coal. It was found that asphalt-emulsion and corn starch were not effective binders. However, the use of Brewex resulted in pellets that exceeded all of the minimum quality requirements for coal pellets.

Rest potential and linear potential sweep techniques were used to study the cathodic-polarization processes on chalcopyrite, simulating chalcopyrite short-circuited with grinding media in a wet grinding mill. Microflotation tests were carried out to investigate the effect of cathodic polarization on the collectorless flotation of chalcopyrite. It was observed that collectorless flotation of a cathodically polarized chalcopyrite sample could he obtained when oxygen was used for aeration, but not if nitrogen was used. A mechanism for the role that oxygen plays in the collectorless flotation of cathodically polarized chalcopyrite is discussed.

During several months in 1996 and 1997, Cyprus Twentymile Coal Co. (TCC) set world production records at its Twentymile Mine in northwestern Colorado. These records were due to the company's implementation of a state-of-the-art longwall mining and conveyance system along with a -highly dedicated work force. This article is a case study of the design of long panels at the mine from conception to implementation. Obstacles that needed to be overcome included subsidence engineering, environmental regulations, conveyance, ventilation, equipment design and continuous miner (CM) development timing.

The Kamyr Countercurrent Tower Leaching Process is intended to combine, in a single tower, thickening, leaching, separation and clarification of pregnant solution, and washing of leaching chemicals from the tailing pulp. For a gold or silver metallurgical plant, the flowsheet would consist of crushing and grinding, cyclones for size control and partial thickening, the Kamyr tower, and a gold or silver recovery system of either carbon in solution, zinc precipitation, or direct electrowinning. Ancillary systems for the Kamyr metallurgical plant would include cyanide preparation, fiber preparation and recovery, and flocculant preparation.

In processing heavy-mineral sands, the low feed concen¬tration and respective high value of the desired minerals require high-capacity production and sharp classification/ separation techniques to reduce the specific production costs. This paper describes the new allfux® separator, which can economically accomplish these criteria. The separator is a two-stage process that combines rising current and fluidized-bed technology. This allows for the treatment of ex¬tremely high mass flows in a single unit. This paper reports on test work performed on coal, iron ore and heavy minerals.

The computer program SYGRISIS estimates number of units of equipment and operating costs on the basis of yearly production for different loading (wheel loader, LHD, digging arm loader) and transport (truck, train, conveyor belt, hoist, pump) equipment either individually or in any specified combination. Input data are yearly capacity, working time and technical data for the equipment. For the cost analysis input data are technical quantities and unit costs. SYGRISIS is written in TURBO Pascal and can be used on IBM compatible PCs with MS-DOS operating system.

Copper ore from the Rakha Copper Concentrator (India) was successfully floated using LIX-65 NS as the collector. The beneficial role of this reagent was clearly demonstrated in hatch-flotation tests. From a feed containing around 1% Cu, it was possible in a single-stage flotation to obtain a 23.7% Cu concentrate with a recovery of more than 90%. The plant now uses rougher, scavenger and a two-stage cleaning process. The tests demonstrated that LIX-65 NS is superior to conventional xanthate for the recovery of copper from the Rakha ore.

This paper reviews the successful application of oxime reagents for the solvent extraction of copper and considers the role that well focussed research initiatives can play in bringing further radical change to the metallurgical industry. Particular reference is made to the Cuprex Metal Extraction Process (CMEP), for the treatment of low grade or difficult to treat sulfide concentrates, using the reagent Acorga CLX- 50 to recover the copper and the reagent Acorga ZNX-50 for the recovery of zinc from chloride solutions. Other new extractants, currently in development, are also referenced.

This paper introduces a practical methodology for analyzing vi¬bration records in view of improv¬ing blast designs and preempting anomalous vibrations. This technique, which is based on empirical data, uses a blasting-efficiency determinator (BED) as an indicator of vibration-energy transmission. The method was tested using data from a blasting event at an open-cast coal mine in the province of New Brunswick, Canada. The results derived from the BED values showed that geology and delay timing were probably the principal factors that induced high-intensity vibration propagation.

With the cost competitive nature of material mining, the ability to actively monitor the condition of the conveyor belt systems without personnel dedicated to that task is very desirable. This paper discusses the development of a conveyor belt condition monitoring system, which actively monitors the conveyor belt, without the need to install special antennas. A belt width map can be generated, as well as detection of three types of physical damages: (a) failure of mechanical fasteners, (b) reduction in belting strength due to reductions in competent belt width, and (c) longitudinal belt rips.

Frasch sulfur production/pricing decisions are based on market demand, less nondiscretionary sulfur supply. Price covers the cost of Frasch production and byproduct sellers accept the Frasch price structure. Large stocks have led Canadian byproduct producers to price aggressively at times, but their near-term drawdown suggests more passive price policies in the 1990s. Expanding continental nondiscretionary supply is combining with sizable Frasch supply increments to weaken prices. Simulations using a market model embodying these structural characteristics indicate that expanding demand may not result in substantial recovery from 1992 price lows before 1996.

INTRODUCTION Located approximately 48 km (30 miles) south of Dallas, Texas, use to be the site of the Superconducting Super Collider. For those of you unfamiliar with the project, this was a multi-billion dollar project taken on by the U.S. Government for the further advancement of technology, medicine, and science. Major components of the project consisted of a Linear Accelerator known as the LINAC; three accelerating rings known as the Low Energy Boosters (LEB), Medium Energy Booster (MEB) and the High Energy Booster (HEB); the East and West Campuses where the Inner Reactor Halls would have been located; and the 87 km (54 mile) main collider tunnel. Unfortunately, this all came to an end on December 6, 1993, with the termination of the project due to the Government's cancellation of funds. This paper will deal with the two of the underground contracts before the termination. These two contracts were the 1122 contract which ran from N25 to N40 and the 1130 contract which ran from N40 to N55. (See figure 1) The 1122 contract was awarded to us in July of 1992 and consisted of the excavation and support of six (6) shaft varying in diameter from 5.5 m (18 feet) to 8 m (26 feet) and ranging from 39.6 m (130 feet) to 61 m (200 feet) deep and the driving of approximately 13,100 m (.43,000 If.) of main collider tunnel. Application of Quality Management philosophies and techniques commonly referred to as Managing for Continuous Improvement, Team Management , or Managing for Consistency is required in today's mining, manufacturing, and service industries in order to meet quality demands, beat competition, lower costs, optimize operations, effectively use personnel, improve morale, and enhance profitability. Most of these phiosophies and techniques are known to today's managers but either have fallen into disuse or were never allowed to surface in the corporate environment of the organization. Managers should review and adopt the philosophies and techniques of Quality Management and use them to revitalize their organizations and bring about a "paradigm" shift in the way we manage, thereby achieving the goals listed above.

The development of the Escondida concentrator is described, from the design of the original 35,000 tpd concentrator through successive expansions and modifications to the 115,000 tpd plant currently under construction. Operating problems, and the steps taken to overcome them, are briefly discussed. The control objective is to reach and maintain the medium density set point in minimum time. A description of the mechanical components and instrumentation are presented. In the spring of 1988, Freeport-McMoRan Resource Partners Ltd. Partnership, IMC Fertilizer Inc. and Homestake Mining Co., as joint venturers, were awarded the sulphur lease for Main Pass Block 299, lease number OCS-G 91372. This was one of 11 leases awarded to the joint venturers. Following the initial discovery wells in December 1988, delineation drilling confirmed proven sulphur reserves of 68 Mt (67 million long tons). Proven, recoverable oil and gas reserves are 6.2 Mm3 (39.4 million bbl) and 1114 Mm3 (7.2 billion cu ft), respectively. Development of the sulphur mine was given approval as a fast-track project in 1989. The oil and gas reserves were acquired from the original hydrocarbon lessee in 1990 and were also given fast-track status. Fast-track for these projects meant design and engineering would not be complete before construction began. Joint venture The Main Pass Joint Venture is one of 13 joint ventures formed between Freeport and three other companies - IMC Fertilizer, Inc., Felmont Oil Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of Homestake Mining Co., and Texasgulf Minerals and Metals Co. Felmont has since changed its name to Homestake Sulphur Co. Texasgulf assigned its interests to its parent company. Texasgulf did not participate in the Main Pass 299 joint venture. Joint venture negotiations, anticipating a lease sale in mid-1988, began in December of 1987. This joint venture, the first of its kind, was created to acquire offshore leases, explore, develop and mine sulphur. The Interior Department's Minerals Management Service (MMS) announced a lease sale date of Feb. 24, 1988 on the first business day of 1988. This greatly accelerated the joint venture negotiations. Of the 13 leases the joint ventures bid on, 11 were awarded. Freeport holds its interest in all the leases through its ownership interest in Freeport-McMoRan Resource Partners, Ltd. Partnership. Resource Partners is the operator on all of the leases.

The recent increase in development of refractory gold deposits has resulted in changes to the traditional treatment processes. The selection of the preferred refractory treatment process is dependent on the mineralogy of the ore. One process, which has recently gained increasing attention, utilizes dry grinding and roasting of the whole ore. This paper will discuss some of the considerations to be addressed during the design of the process fl owsheet and what the effects of the various alternatives will be on the plant capital and operating costs. The paper will be based, in part, on current experiences with dry grinding, roasting plant design and start-up.

This paper describes the implementation of specialized software in mine planning at the Cleveland-Cliffs’ managed Empire Mine on Michigan’s Marquette Iron Range. The application puts together years of mining experience on the eastern end of the Marquette Range beginning in the early 1960’s. The Empire Mine, in its thirty-fifth year of production, uses the software to model a complex and highly variable low grade magnetite orebody, capturing the economics of mining and processing to the final product. With special attention given to geostatistical methods, the software is used for all geologic modeling, ore reserve estimation, ore control, pit design and short and long range planning.

Natural aggregate – sand, gravel, and crushed stone – is the number one non-energy mineral resource in the world in terms of both volume and value. A plan for the sustainable development of aggregate resources can include: 1) policies and economic incentives to encourage identification and protection of potential resources, 2)efficient quarrying and processing of aggregate, 3) efficient use of primary aggregates, 4) greater use of recycled, waste, or substitute material, 5) inclusion of costs of all environmental impacts in price of material, 6) reclamation to beneficial secondary uses, and 7)identification of objectives, targets, actions, and sustainability indicators. Quarrying can also contribute to sustainable ecosystems through natural habitat reclamation.
