Recent land ban act has put pressure on industry to decontaminate the waste streams before they could be discharged. However, for both metal and organic contaminated wastes, there are commercial incentives to recover usable resources. Recent technology developments have helped meeting such objectives. This paper reviews developments in treatment technologies for industrial wastes. Major chemical groups used in waste treatment are summarized.

The environmentally sound processing of metal-bearing chloride solutions plays a key role in the extraction, plating, recycling, finishing and surface preparation of metals. Additionally, many chloride-bearing waste streams must be processed to obtain environmentally acceptable products. This paper reviews the technologies used for processing aqueous metal-chloride solutions and describes the challenges that have been overcome in application of these technologies.

The successful exploration for Austin Taylor and Gen. McRae from 1931 to 1940 obscured the fact that I was reaching a period of transition. This was true both in personal and business life. It was probably fortunate that I did not realize how great a change must come after I passed the age of 50. In the personal life of our family the change came when both our children left home to go to school or college. This made home a different place and, because of the absence of the children, Dorothy could devote much of her time and attention to the art she loved so well. She could spend long periods in New York, the center of the nation's art life. Vacations at Tahoe and long pleasure trips made the separation from the children less disturbing but it could never again be the same as it had been in the first 20 years of our marriage. The change In my business life was just as complete, though a little more gradual. While work for Bralorne and General McRae made the "bite" of the Great Depression less painful for us than it was for most consultants and their families, the fact that I was getting older made a new sort of work inevitable. I was 50 years old and the total grew rapidly. Planes and automobiles that made travel easier even in the wilds of Alaska and northern Canada still made it possible for me to look at new prospects, but increasingly often I was exhausted at the end of a day's climb and, if the nature of my work did not change there would soon be no more work. Fortunately work of a new sort came a little at a time. As I became a director of Bralorne and president of its American subsidiaries I had to take on more administrative work, and success of these operations made others want to employ me to help direct policy and value mines. Smallbore tunnels in urban environments often present more technical and managerial problems than major large diameter schemes carried out for transportion, water supply and hydro-electric facilities. The 1.8 km Bath scheme was designed for construction in tunnel using the pipe jacking system. Unforeseen ground conditions meant other techniques were needed during construction. The paper describes the problems encountered and how they were overcome.

This work describes the effect of process parameters on the acidulation of Moroccan phosphate rock using nitric acid, i.e., the nitro-phosphate process. A series of bench scale experiments were conducted, using a stirred tank reactor (STR) system, to investigate the chemical reactions involved and optimum conditions for the formation of nitro-phosphate fertilizer. The effect of reaction time, temperature, mixing speed, acidulation ratio, and acid concentration were investigated, and were found to have an effect on the dissolution of P2O5 from the phosphate rock, using nitric acid. An increase in nitric acid concentration resulted in an increase in P2O5 dissolution, however, the dissolution was also found to be a function of acidulation ratio. A nitric acid phosphate rock ratio of 4:l ensured 90% dissolution for nitric acid concentration > 30%.

Lognormal grade distributions are definitely the rule rather than the, exception in many types of deposits, including precious metals, uranium, and many others. The "normal theory" geostatistical techniques do not work well in these situations because the occasional high grade values, perhaps several orders of magnitude larger than the median, can overwhelm the rest of the data, resulting in variograms and Kriged estimates which are unrealistic or even ridiculous. Robust techniques for variogram modeling have been proposed, and truncation of high sample values can produce more reasonable Kriged estimates, but the technique of working with log transformed data appears to be the best method of handling lognormal data. This paper will discuss primarily the two parameter lognormal case, with some discussion of the three parameter lognormal, but no discussion of other methods of transforming data, such as disjunctive Kriging.

Quantitative analysis of Platinum Group Metals from ore samples and industrial materials using Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS), Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometer (ICP-AES), Atomic Absorption Spectrometer(AAS), and X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) techniques was conducted and the performance of various techniques was compared. The effects of different matrices in the sample materials were compared and discussed for each analytical technique. The ICP-AES technique exhibited better accuracy than AAS but showed limitations in its application due to strong spectral interference in the presence of common matrix elements such as iron. The ICP-MS showed the lowest detection limit and less spectral interferences than the previous two techniques. The XRF technique was also applied to examine the total amount of PGM from industrial materials. Results from each analytical method on various sources were presented and discussed.

Spent potliners (SPL) were declared hazardous waste under RCRA (K088) in July, 1990. The glass formation characteristics of the SPL was studied. The SPL glassy matrix were analyzed using X-ray diffraction and optical microscopy. Results showed that SPL can be fixed in a glassy matrix with the addition of sand and limestone. The optimum amounts of additives were determined for obtaining the best glass formation characteristics.

Bioleaching of solid wastes lithium ion battery industries was carried out in this investigation. A new method for recovery of cobalt, potentially the basis of an economic and environmentally friendly process was examined. The present study was conducted using chemolithotrophic and acidophilic bacteria Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and some mixed thiobacilli collected from abandoned mine drainage. These organisms were able to utilize sulfur and ferrous ion as energy source. Bio-dissolution of cobalt was found to be faster than lithium. The effect of initial Fe(II) concentration, initial pH and solid/liquid (w/v) ratio were studied in detail. With increase of time of leaching the dissolution of cobalt was found to be increased and this must be due to competitiveness of the mixed thiobacilli for utilizing the energy source among them. Since the bacteria are belonging to acidophilic group the higher pH studies revealed a decrease trend in metal dissolution. Higher solid/liquid ratio also found to be detrimental for the bacterial activity. It seems bacteria are not resistant to higher concentration of the metal. The optimized conditions for bio-dissolution were sol-id/liquid (w/v) ratio - 10 g/L, initial Fe(II) concentration - 5 g/L, elemental sulfur - 1% (w/v). In the optimized conditions, cobalt dissolution was observed to be about 75 % whereas that of lithium was 15% after 25 days.

During 1998, 62 million tons of iron ore pellets valued at $1.7 billion were shipped from U.S. mines. These pellets are the primary source for domestic iron and steel production. During pelletization, binders are required to improve the green strength of the pellets. Each year, bentonite binder costs a typical plant from $3 million to $5 million. Reducing the bentonite dosage has the advantages of significant cost savings while producing higher quality, lower silica pellets. The authors have recently identified a new and important bentonite binding mechanism, the fiber theory. During this study, procedures were developed that took advantage of the ability of bentonite to form fibers, and resulted in a dramatic decrease in the necessary bentonite dosage. Acceptable quality pellets were produced with the bentonite dosages reduced in half from 14 lb/lt (0.66%) to 7 lb/lt (0.33%).

The effect of galvanic interactions among sulfide minerals such as chalcopyrite, galena, and sphalerite in the presence and absence of a grinding ball material on the flotation recovery of chalcopyrite has been studied. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ESCA) studies were carried out to identify the reaction products on the sulfide minerals after different apes of galvanic interactions. Galvanic contact with active minerals such as galena and sphalerite, either alone or together, significantly affected the floatability of chalcopyrite mineral, such an effect being more severely felt in the additional presence of a grinding medium as well as oxygen. Surface analysis studies revealed the presence of oxyhydroxide species of iron on all the sulfide mineral samples which were in prior contact with the grinding medium. The formation of such oxyhydroxide species of iron was found to be dependant on the relative electrochemical activity of the mineral. Probable electrochemical reaction mechanisms are discussed.

The Hector Mine deposit in the California Mojave Desert has a magnesium-rich clay that formed when lithium and fluorine were introduced into isolated fine lacustrine volcanic sediment during the Pliocene. The intensely deformed deposit has been supplying the highest grade thixotropic clay to the coatings industry for over half a century. A thixotropic clay displays the property of changing from a gel to a sol when shaken, and increases in strength upon standing.

The shape of particles has a significant effect on the shear strength and deformational characteristics of granular materials. Weathering can change the grain shapes. For example, more weathered sands tend to be rounder regardless of particle size. Particle shape analysis was performed on samples collected from the Questa mine rock piles, a debris flow and the pit alteration scar. In order to increase the validity of the particle shape analysis, 4 persons including 2 geologists and 2 mining engineers were involved in describing the particle shapes. The results of this analysis indicate that rock fragments in the collected samples are mainly subangular, subdiscoidal and subprismoidal. The sphericity and angularity of the rock fragments of the older analogs are similar to those of the rock piles. This suggests that short-term weathering (<100 years) has not noticeably changed the particle shapes at the test locations. Rock piles made of more angular particles are more stable compared to rock piles with rounded particles.

From underground instrumentation data and from direct observation of longwall panels, it was demonstrated that growth of the main-roof overhang causes an extremely high roof weighting on the face supports. This can result in catastrophic effects on the supports when the roof-weighting intensity far exceeds the support capacity. In this paper, a comprehensive study was conducted on the characteristics of main-roof breakage and its effects on shields at different locations along the face. The study was based on monitored shield data, theoretical analysis and finite element analysis. With the help of theoretical analysis and numerical modeling, stress distribution and redistribution in the main roof were analyzed to define the main-roof failure modes and to understand the maximum roof-weighting intensity imposed on the shields. From this study, it was found that the effects of main-roof breakage on shields are chiefly related to the shield&apos;s initial-setting condition and to the final failure mode of the main roof.
