In the aftermath of the September 11th attack on the World Trade Center, groundwater control was of immediate concern. Water in?ow from the adjacent Hudson River through the compromised slurry wall ‘bathtub’ surrounding the site, ruptured water and sewer mains, and saturation from fire hoses all contributed to an already critical situation, further hampering the recovery and rehabilitation effort. An extensive pumping and deep well installation program was initiated, focused on reducing the hydrostatic loading to the severely damaged perimeter slurry wall.

Construction of the AA Pad reclamation was completed in the fall of 2000. Seeding of the ET cover began in the late fall of 2000 and continued through May of 2001. On Saturday afternoon, June 1, 2002, a large, very localized thunderstorm struck the reclaimed AA Pad site. Eyewitnesses present at the time described a dark storm cloud parked above the site for less than half an hour. Average rainfall intensity was measured to be 122 mm (4.8 inches) per hour and peak rainfall intensity was estimated to be 213 mm (8.4 inches) to 259 mm(10.2 inches) per hour. At the time of the storm, the construction was less than two (2) years old and the vegetation had only a single season of growth. The entire period from the end of construction until the date of the storm was a drought period with below normal precipitation. Other than a few small snowmelt events, there was no precipitation event large enough to produce any significant flow in the channel network. Therefore, the very first significant runoff event was the extreme event of June 1, 2002. The storm essentially represents a large-scale field test of the design concepts used at the AA Pad site. Shortly after the storm, data was collected and analyzed with the intent of learning as much as possible about the performance of the cover system design with the expectation that the newly acquired knowledge might be utilized in future designs to further improve the performance of similar cover systems during extreme events.

The art of rock mechanics has been applied in various forms since early man first used caves for housing and fashioned rocks into weapons, tools, and utensils. The development of the science of rock mechanics has occurred in a slow but steady fashion due to the complexity of the materials, geometries, and loading conditions involved. It encompasses a great diversity of topics ranging from techniques for rock destruction to those required for rock strengthening or support, and as such enters daily into the life of the mining engineer. Although today rock mechanics can be confidently used in competent geologic structures, the degree of confidence diminishes as the structures become more complex and the number of geologic defects become more numerous. Even so, the principles still give a better estimate of the structural behavior of underground openings than ever before, and the persons responsible for design and control draw freely and often on the subject. The flotation performance of Florida phosphate rock was evaluated in terms of the mixing behavior of reagents and particulates during anionic conditioning of phosphate slurries. The various conditioning variables that influence mixing, namely, solids loading, agitation speed and conditioning time, were investigated to determine their effect on reagent coating of the particles. The phosphate recovery was used to monitor the conditioning efficiency. The mixing characteristics of the phosphate feed were evaluated in terms of the ratio of the mixing power (P) to the minimum power (Pm) required to keep the slurry in suspension. It was found that mixing conditions govern the conditioning time required to obtain a high recovery. Reagentization was slower at lower P/Pm ratios. At higher P/Pm ratios, the flotation recovery was optimized, and the agitation speed was found to have no significant effect. Optimum mixing conditions were obtained for a74 wt% slurry at an agitation speed of 450 rpm (47 radians/sec). Under these optimum mixing conditions, the collector dosage required for an improved recovery was lower and the conditioning time was shorter.

This paper briefly covers theories behind caking of crystalline salt particles, and methods of its prevention. The main factors that influence the extent of caking are humidity, storage pressure, temperature variations, and length of storage time. Careful adherence to control- ling these variables are more critical than the addition of even the most efficient anticaking reagent. The principle characteristics that a successful anticaking reagent must possess are: high retention at the temperature of application, good coating of reagent on the particle surface, capability of in- creasing the hydrophobicity of the particle, reducing the surface tension of liquids, and/or creating of a barrier between particles that prevent contact between particles, and modifying the crystal structure of the salt between the particles. Methods to evaluate the reduction of caking tenacity with the application of various anticaking reagents, reagent volatility and reagent degradation in plant and laboratory scales are discussed. Various types of anticake reagents used today in industry are organic active and inactive reagents, inorganic inert and inorganic salt crystal modifying re- agents.

During-all phases of exploration limited resources must be allocated among exploration methods and among exploration prospects. This problem,, an exercise in optimization, can be treated mathematically. For three objective functions - maximizing return, return to cost and return minus weighted cost - theoretical results exist which enable the exploration planner not only to gain valuable insight into the problem, but also to estimate the resources necessary and to allocate these resources for' at least-two stages of exploration prior to initial field work. A two-stage exploration strategy for volcanogenic-sedimentary iron in northern Egypt illustrates, how the results can be used. Stage 1 consists of an aeromagnetic survey to map the structure of five areas;" stage 2 consists of field reconnaissance work. For the three objectives, lower bounds are calculated as a function of exploration expenditures for each stage in order to facilitate the choice of an-optimal exploration budget. Nomograms are then presented which, based on the Kuhn-Tucker Conditions', enable the incremental allocation of airborne and reconnaissance effort among the five areas.

Until recently sulphur uses were so broadly based that economists used sulphur consumption to measure industrial activity. However, sulphur use patterns are changing and the manufacture of phosphate fertilizers presently accounts for approximately 65% of the world's sulphur consumption compared with only 25% in 1960. This has encouraged the development of new agricultural and industrial uses for sulphur. Major emphasis has been placed on its use as a fertilizer and in the manufacture of paving materials, specialty concretes and coatings. Some of these uses could have a significant impact on future sulphur usage.

The viscosities of various FeO-SiO2 slags were calculated using a previously developed structural-based model. Using hole theory and the atomic pair model, an expression was derived to relate the viscosity to temperature and the fraction of the bridging oxygen in silicate melts. The deduced equation was successfully applied to predict the viscosities of FeO-SiO2 slags in the composition range of 0.1 < XSi02 < 0.423 for several temperatures. The calculated data agree well with the experimental viscosity data.

Premining investigations involve the determination of roof, floor, and coal seam characteristics to delineate areas of troublesome ground control prior to development of a mine. Data obtained can be useful in mine design, equipment selection, estimation of face productivity, development of ground control plans and assessing ground control costs, and in conducting feasibility studies and financial analyses. This paper discusses 1) the causative factors associated with ground instability, 2) how useful data can be obtained for these factors during premining investigations, and 3) analysis techniques to delineate probable areas of ground instability.

Among the increasing operating costs affecting today&apos; s processing facilities are those necessary in meeting the continually growing requirement for safe and environmentally sound materials- control and handling procedures. Of particular interest are materials listed as hazardous, the need to maintain accurate records of their acquisition, consumption and disposal, and the obligation to employees and the community to have information available regarding such materials. Some requirements affecting modern operating facilities are reviewed in this paper, and potential methods for dealing with complex handling and documentation requirements, including computer automation, are discussed.

Adsorption of nonionic/anionic surfactant mixtures on kaolinite has been studied, with •Sodium dodecylsulfate as the anionic surfactant, and •Octaethyleneglycol mono-n-dodecylether as the nonionic surfactant. Synergistic interaction between these surfactants was found to cause adsorption of the nonionic surfactant with its hydrophilic chains protruding into the bulk, leading to substantial changes in wettability and dispersion characteristics of kaolinite. Similarly, hydrophobicity changes are observed also for silica particles upon adsorption of nonionic ethoxylated alcohols owing to possible changes in the orientation of the adsorbed surfactant molecules at the interface.

This paper presents an analysis of the effect of the dynamics of bit wear on dust generation. Two surveys have been conducted in order to assess the mechanism and type of bit wear and to evaluate the impact of bit wear on the productivity of the continuous miners. Used bits were collected from the underground coal mines and these used bits were utilized in laboratory coal cutting. The effect of bit wear on dust generation has been quantified and its impacted on dust generation and ventilation system has been exemplified.

A study was conducted to evaluate the applicability of large wheel loaders (Caterpillar 994 Class) for use as primary loading equipment in open-pit iron-ore operations. Field visits were made to taconite and gold mines that used large wheel loaders. Information was gathered on loader selection rationale; operation and maintenance experience; and production, availability and costs. Brief time studies were conducted to indicate machine performance and utilization. This paper summarizes the field data that was collected, including an economic comparison of wheel loaders and cable shovels in an iron-ore application.

This paper presents a laboratory simulation of regrinding and resulting dust generation. An Automated Rotary Coal Cutting Simulator (ARCCS) was modified to conduct regrinding experiment. In order to estimate the effects of coal properties and operating parameters on regrinding and dust generation, an orthogonal fractional factorial experimental design was implemented in regrinding experiment. Marple personal cascade impactors, Series 290, were used to measure dust concentration during experiment. Three types of coal seams, namely, Waynesburg, Pittsburgh, and Lower Kittanning, were used to represent different coal properties. Experimental results and complete parametric analysis were presented.

A late-1980 airborne EM/magnetic method test over the State Line kimberlite area of Colorado-Wyoming shows weak but recognizable anomalous responses to the known pipes. The magnetic survey indicates the presence of several shallow subsurface bodies adjacent to the known kimberlites, which are interpreted as possible blind diatremes. The survey data, in profile and contoured map form, has been correlated with geological map information available at the time. It can serve as the basis for reexamining kimberlite distribution in the area, taking into account geological findings during the recent work on known bodies.

This article introduces the basic definitions and philosophy behind process hazard evaluation procedures and the determination of risk as being a function of accident probabi1ity and accident consequence. The general concepts of good engineering practice and predictive hazard evaluation are discussed. Integration and synthesis of mine-site topography, geophysical, and geochemical data yields both two- dimensional and three-Amensional perspective models for the May Day mine located in the Cement Creek drainage near Silverton, Colorado. Induced polarization, geophysical data are spatially registered with geochemical data acquired from drill hole cuttings that are contoured m three-dimensional space, thereby permitting determination of the most metalliferous and sulfur rich zones of a waste pile. This spatial modeling application was developed to be a visually intuitive tool to aid in mine waste reclamation.
