The effects of microwave treatment on the floatabilities and magnetic susceptibilities of some sulfide minerals, namely, pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite, were studied. Pure mineral samples were prepared in -425+212-µm, -212+106-µm and -106+38-µm size fractions. Microflotation and magnetic separation tests were carried out on the samples after microwave treatment at 600, 950 and 1,300 Watts for 5, 20, 60, 90, 120 and 240 seconds. The maximum temperature values of the samples were measured during the microwave treatment, and possible altera-tions on the mineral surfaces were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The effects of microwave treatment are discussed based on the result of microflotation and magnetic separation tests. The results revealed that pyrite, chalcopyrite and galena were heated very quickly and that their surface temperatures reached ~700° to 900°C, while the temperature of sphalerite reached only ~130°C. The floatability of pyrite, chalcopyrite and galena were decreased when microwave energy and the duration of treatment were increased, owing to oxidation of the mineral surfaces caused by relatively high temperature. As expected, there was no change in the floatability of sphalerite. The magnetic properties of pyrite and chalcopyrite were improved by the increase in microwave energy and the duration of treatment to such an extent that 90% of the feed separated as magnetic product. But no change was observed in the magnetic properties of galena and sphalerite.

Ladies and Gentlemen: Never in the history of our mining industry has the emphasis on public relations been accelerated as much as it has in the last few years. Knowing of your keen interest in this subject I consider it a great privilege that your program committee has asked me here to discuss the crushed stone segment of our industry approach to this important part of our daily business lives. As you are aware, crushed stone operations are present in almost every segment of the country wherever aggregates for construction projects are required. The tonnage of crushed stone produced is second only to sand and gravel - another source of aggregates - and this together with sand and gravel amounts to over half of the tonnage of all mined products in the United States. What is unique about this industry that will be of interest to all of you in analyzing how they have approached Public Relations? The fact that it is so wide-spread is of course obvious, but perhaps a more significant nature of this segment of the mining industry that has brought it more in the limelight of public interest and on a larger scale is the location of a large part of the quarries quite close into the urban area and population centers where you have the greatest demand for aggregate products.

In a previous paper presented at the 1966 Annual Meeting of AIME we reported our work, conducted at the Pennsylvania State University, on the hydrocyclone washing of fine coal.' The initial evaluation based on that work demonstrated the feasibility of hydrocyclones as fine-coal cleaning devices, and in that previous paper we presented selected test data that showed in principle how product yield and assay respond to variations of the major cyclone operating variables. The present paper reports in greater detail on the findings and presents a comprehensive evaluation of our data as follows: ? Hydrocyclone throughput rates were related to feed pressure and other variables by regression equations. These equations are compared with other capacity- versus-pressure drop expressions taken from the literature on classification cyclones.

Northside Storage Tunnel provides 500 megalitres (Ml) (130 million gallons) of storage capacity to capture stormwater/sewage overflows into Sydney Harbour. The6.6 m diameter TBM driven tunnel traverses Middle Harbour 85 m (280 ft) below sea level and through a sandstone/shale rock mass, highly disturbed by stress relief, 20 m(65 ft) beneath the base of the sediment filled palaeochannel. Target limits for inflow, groundwater drawdown and settlement of the valley beaches were achieved by systematic forward grouting from the TBM. Support included rockbolts, sets and shotcrete to carry rock loads, control block instability and spalling and to provide durability and serviceability. This paper describes the tunnelling and grouting works and their effectiveness.

A large underground cavern with dimensions of 25m × 175m × 49m (W×L×H) was excavated in sandstone and siltstone to house 4 units of hydropower generator and was completed in 2000. In feasibility study stage, the property of the siltstone which governs the ceiling of the cavern was questionable due to slaking phenomenon. Parameters on rock properties for design were back calculated from actual ground response measured from a trial excavation. For safety of construction, comparison between prediction and actual ground responses during excavation had proceeded. The prediction was provided by means of PHASES and PHASE2 software and the actual rock response was detected by the provided monitoring system.

The hydrology of in situ leach mining operations is being studied by the U.S. Bureau of Mines using a variety of techniques, and the Bureau has made significant advances in tracking and modeling the flow of leach solutions in rock formations. However, the influence that leach solution composition has on the hydrology of these systems is poorly understood, and geochemically-controlled changes in the hydrologic characteristic of ore deposits during in situ leach mining of porphyry-hosted, copper oxide ores have not been previously studied. The Cyprus Casa Grande in situ leach mining operation mines fracture-hosted and disseminated copper oxides (predominantly chrysocolla) hosted by granodiorite porphyry using a pattern of underground wells. The injection solution consists of sulfuric acid raffinate from a solvent extraction-electrowinning plant. Chemical analysis of representative injection and recovery solutions reveals that gangue cation concentrations in these solutions are high, and geochemical modeling shows that the solutions are saturated or nearly saturated with respect to gypsum, jarosite, and various amorphous oxides. Precipitation of these solids is evoked by calcium-exchange reactions, rising pH, and perhaps locally rising redox potential, as the leach solution reacts with the ore minerals, host rocks, and the atmosphere. Mass and volume balance calculations show that approximately 25 cm of precipitates are formed per gram of copper recovered at Cyprus Casa Grande. The results of geochemical modeling agree with petrologic examination of pre-and post-leach core samples from the leached horizon. Moreover, hydrochemical modeling and hydrologic field data suggests that chemical precipitation causes significant decreases in porosity and permeability during in situ leach mining of porphyry-hosted, copper oxide ore.

Testing was conducted to determine the ability of foam to maintain roof coverage in a simulated longwall mining environment. Approximately 27 percent of respirable coal mine dust can be attributed to longwall shield movement, and developing controls for this dust source has been difficult. The application of foam is a possible dust control method for this source. Laboratory testing of two foam agents was conducted to determine the ability of the foam to adhere to a simulated longwall face roof surface. Two different foam generation methods were used: compressed air and blower air. Using a new imaging technology, image processing and analysis utilizing ImageJ software produced quantifiable results of foam roof coverage. For compressed air foam in 3.3 m/s (650 fpm) ventilation, 98 percent of agent A was intact while 95 percent of agent B was intact on the roof at three minutes after application. At 30 minutes after application, 94 percent of agent A was intact while only 20 percent of agent B remained. For blower air in 3.3 m/s (650 fpm) ventilation, the results were dependent upon nozzle type. Three different nozzles were tested. At 30 min after application, 74 to 92 percent of foam agent A remained, while 3 to 50 percent of foam agent B remained. Compressed air foam seems to remain intact for longer durations and is easier to apply than blower air foam. However, more water drained from the foam when using compressed air foam, which demonstrates that blower air foam retains more water at the roof surface. Agent A seemed to be the better performer as far as roof application is concerned. This testing demonstrates that roof application of foam is feasible and is able to withstand a typical face ventilation velocity, establishing this technique’s potential for longwall shield dust control.

"In this paper, we consider an underground production scheduling problem consisting of determining the proper time interval or intervals in which to complete each mining activity so as to maximize a mine’s discounted value while adhering to precedence, activity durations, and production and processing limits. We present two different integer programming formulations for modeling this optimization problem. Both formulations possess a resource-constrained project scheduling problem structure. The first formulation uses a fine time discretization and is better suited for tactical mine scheduling applications. The second formulation, which uses a coarser time discretization, is better suited for strategic scheduling applications. We illustrate the strengths and weaknesses of each formulation with examples.IntroductionProject scheduling is an important aspect of underground mine planning that consists of determining the start dates for a given set of activities so as to maximize the value of a project while adhering to operational and re-source-availability constraints. Important activities that require scheduling include development, drilling, stoping and other ore-extraction techniques, and backfilling. Precedence relation-ships impose an order in which activities can be carried out based on their location in the mine: for example, the activity a associated with development of an area must be completed before the activity a´ associated with extraction of that same area can begin. Re-sources include attributes of the mining operation, such as the amount of extraction and mill capacity available per time period, and are determined by capital and equipment availability and other factors. In this paper, for our set-ting, resource-availability constraints consider the amounts of material that can be extracted and sent to the mill — that is, processed — per time period."

A theoretical radiation mine model, suitable for underground uranium nines, has been investigated. In this model, the rate of ventilation and/or the radon (thoron) gas emanation from mine walls are time-dependent. Several cases of practical interest have been investigated including sinusoidal, linear, exponential, stepwise, or a combination of two or more of the above. Analytical solutions were obtained for the time-dependent radon (thoron) gas emanation rate. However, because of the extreme analytical complexity of the solutions corresponding to the time-dependent ventilation rate case, numerical solutions were found using a special Runge-Kutta procedure and the Hamming's modified predictor-corrector method for the solution of linear initial-value problems. The mine model makes provisions for losses of radioactivity, other than by ventilation and radioactive decay, by, say, plate-out on mine walls, and by other mechanisms. Radioactivity data, i.e., radon, thoron, and their progeny. obtained with the above mine model for a number of ventilation and emanation conditions, are presented. Experimental data obtained in an inactive stope of an underground uranium mine for a time-dependent air flow case are shown. Air flow conditions (ventilation rate) were determined by tracer gas techniques using SF6.

Smectite is a common impurity in the kaolins of Georgia. This impurity is harmful to the low-shear rheology of kaolin slurries in concentrations as low as a few weight percent. The deleterious effect of smectite on the low-shear rheology is due to the swelling of the mineral. Montmorillonite containing clays were treated to precipitate a compact brucite layer {Mg(OH)2} in the interlayer region of the expandable layer silicate mineral. This treatment forms a hydroxy-Mg-montmorillonite with characteristics similar to chlorite. This treatment effectively reduces the swelling capacity of the mineral and improves the rheological properties of kaolin slurries contaminated with smectite impurities.

Fuel is a major .cost for power generating utilities. Virginia Power is completing one of the nation's largest coal reconversion programs. As a result, 10 million tons of coal will now be used at six generating stations. Four of these stations are located on naviagable waterways. They consume over half of Virginia Power's coal. Historically, railroads have exclusively served these plants. In an effort to substantially reduce fuel cost, Virginia Power has reexamined transportation logistics and is proceeding with barge delivery. A phased approach was used by Virginia Power for the transportation program. Plant requirements were first identified. Coal sourcing issues were then examined. The concept of intermodal transportation was investigated. The bottom line cost savings was used as the criteria for continuing the project. The results thus far have been gratifying. Virginia Power has begun to implement barge transportation.

Randy and Kenny Robison have visited every coal mine that would let them in the door, to survey the best mining practices. The brothers have spent nearly their entire lives working in coal operations. The Robison’s started out on lube and grease trucks and worked their way up to respected industry leaders in Alabama. The Robisons have owned MS&R since 1989. Since then, they have created a niche for themselves in providing coal for Alabama’s metallurgical coal market. A great deal of the knowledge the Robisons have amassed throughout the years has come from observing — taking note of what works and what does not. In early spring 2004, they commissioned a Komatsu America PC3000 Super Shovel. Outfitted with a backhoe attachment and a 16-m3 (21-cu yd) bucket, MS&R’s PC3000 is currently one of the largest mining excavators working in Alabama.

For the commercial production of iron ore pellets from hematite ores, as it is practiced in various pellet plants, the addition of lime has shown to be an efficient means with a view to improving cold compression and abrasive strength of the indurated pellets considerably. Unfortunately, it has also been shown at the same time, that the metallurgical properties as, for instance, swelling behavior, softening during reduction under load and disintegration of the grain, can be adversely affected to a high degree. In the course of smelting tests carried out by renowned steelworks, blast furnace operation was heavily disturbed by the swelling and early softening of the pellets, also by their disintegration in the low-temperature range, which altogether led to a considerable lowering of the smelting rate (1, 2, 3).

The effect of initial damage generated by weakly cemented interlayer surfaces on the physico-mechanical properties of layered cemented tailings backfill (LCTB) is considered for the interlayer inclination structure generated by multiple layered backfills in large-scale mining voids. Utilizing the theory of damage mechanics, the damage evolution and constitutive model of LCTB with interlayer inclination is constructed by considering the coupling of interlayer inclination effect and loading. Based on Mitchell’s mechanical model, we analyze the damage mechanism of the inclined cementation surface of LCTB, and derive the expression for the strength of LCTB considering interlayer inclination. The mechanical properties test of LCTB with different inclinations was carried out, and the results showed that the damage model of LCTB established was highly consistent with the experimental curves, which verified the correctness of the model. The initial inclination damage leads to the decrease of adhesive cohesion of cemented surface, and with the increase of inclination, the separation of layered surface, aggravation of misalignment, layered cemented surface is more prone to shear damage, and the mechanical properties of cemented tailings backfill in the lower part of layered surface are not effectively played, which reduces the overall performance of the material.

The intelligent selection of wire cloth and perforated plate for screening surfaces seems a rather confusing subject to the newcomer in aggregate processing. The proper application of various screening surfaces is a complicated one and one could consider himself an expert only after many years of working with all applications. However, part of the subject matter could be simplified considerably for, the average screen user. In this paper an attempt will be made to do this, by presenting some comparative specification data along with cost figures Unfortunately, it is impossible in the limited scope of this paper to give actual service comparison records between different cloths or cloth and plate. Anyone who has considered making actual service comparisons for competing screening media is well aware of the almost insurmountable problems Their solution would form the basis for a separate paper on that subject alone. Therefore, this paper will be limited to comparative data up to the point of installation.

Modern mining consistently faces controversy. Public sentiment impacts the permitting and development of mines, so a quality public relations (PR) program for mining companies may improve society’s impression of the mining industry. Developing mines face more permitting challenges than operating mines, which stems from a lack of societal trust given the history of mining and its impact on the environment. Two case studies were selected based on the type of public controversy they face to demonstrate how pervasive permitting issues are in industry. Both Pebble Mine, owned by Northern Dynasty Minerals (NDM), and Black Butte, owned by Sandfire Resources America Inc (SRA), experienced difficulties with their water permitting due to potential risks their mine developments posed to local fish populations. Pebble has, to date, failed in all of their attempts to become permitted due to concern for the water and the fish. Black Butte dealt with the same problems, on a smaller scale, but was able to become permitted. These two mines will be discussed in detail including local history, mine setting, mining history in America, prevalent culture groups, technology development, and intercultural communication competence (ICC). The mining industry needs to evaluate its ICC skills since ICC directly determines the effectiveness of PR. Based on Barna’s Stumbling Blocks for intercultural communication, methods for improving the mining industry’s PR will be suggested in the hope of easing the permitting process for future mines by developing ICC.

The availability of environmentally acceptable and reliable energy sources is an important issue for Federal, State, and local planners. A cooperative program by the U.S. Geological Survey, State geological surveys, and the U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a national GIS-based systematic effort to collect, analyze, and depict data characterizing the relationship between restrictions to mining and the potential development of the Nation's coal resources. Land use/environmental and technologic/geologic restrictions are identified within selected 1:24,000-scale, 130-to 150-sq-km 7.5-min quadrangles and applied as overlays to maps of coal-bed thickness, depth, and mined-out areas. Tonnages of original, mined and lost-in-mining, remaining, restricted, and available resources are calculated. Resultant data files are transferred to the Bureau of Mines for recoverability and cost analysis.

INTRODUCTION The level of analysis for the selection of extraction practices and equipment for surface mining differs significantly from that found in underground mining. In underground mines, manufacturers establish the operating ranges of the equipment, such as continuous miners, loaders, and boring machines, based upon required clearances. Even in conventional mining, the drilling and blasting operation is usually based upon experience. The selection of extraction methods and equipment for surface mining is more complex. Since the equipment is not as confined as in deep mining, and the topography tends to be highly variable over the limits of the mining property, primary extraction equipment must be sized according to reach and capacity. Further, due to the depositional characteristics of the over- burden, drilling and blasting patterns must be well- designed to provide proper fragmentation. The following sections provide a general outline for the selection of surface excavation practices and equipment. The topics covered include drilling and blasting and the selection of both primary extraction equipment (draglines and stripping shovels) and secondary extraction equipment (bulldozers, scrapers, and front-end loaders). EXCAVATION FUNDAMENTALS Before discussing surface excavation, a few concepts need to be defined. A bank cubic yard of material is equal to one cubic yard as it lies in its natural or undisturbed state. A loose cubic yard is that portion of a bank yard that after being disturbed has expanded to measure one cubic yard. Swell is the volume increase of a material when it is removed from the natural state. Finally, load factor is the percentage decrease in the density of a material from its natural state to a loose state. Table 1 summarizes these concepts for various materials. When the amount of overburden to be removed to meet a predetermined production rate is established, a suitable bucket size for the primary stripping equipment must be calculated. The following equation can be used: NBSIZE = TBC/[(OF) (BF)] (1) where NBSIZE is the actual bucket capacity after considering the swell percentage, the bucket fill factor, and the operating efficiency; TBC is the theoretical bucket capacity (TBC = COB/NTCPM); OF is the operating efficiency; BF is the bucket fill factor; COB is the cubic yards of overburden to be removed; NTCPM is the number of theoretical cycles per month [NTCPM = (SMH) (3600)/(CT)]; SMH is the scheduled monthly hours; and CT is the cycle time in seconds. FRAGMENTATION PROCEDURES Drilling Where the strength of overburden material is such that blasting is required prior to excavation, drilling is conducted before using explosives. Two methods of drilling are found in mining-percussion and rotary. Penetration of overburden by percussion drilling is carried out by successive impacts of the bit into the rock. Emphasis in this section will be placed on rotary drilling, because for surface mining it is the most versatile form of overburden penetration. Rotary drilling is conducted by rotating a rigid string of tubular rods to which a rock-cutting bit is attached. The drilling energy is supplied by rotation as well as thrust and the cutting action consists of abrasion, scraping, spalling, or chipping. The size range for rotary-drilled blastholes is from 4 in. to 15 in., with 9 in. and 12 in. being common sizes. There are two types of bits used for rotary drilling-drag and rolling cutter. Drag bits are applicable in soft to medium-soft shales or their equivalents. Since their effectiveness is dependent upon a successful scraping action, drilling thrust is lower for drag bits than for rolling cutter bits; the opposite is true for torque requirements. The bits are usually fitted with replace- able tungsten-carbide cutters. Rolling cutter bits, though available in a two-cone configuration, are usually of the three-cone style (Table 2). The rolling cones have either large steel teeth for drilling through soft formations or small tungsten-car- bide inserts for drilling through hard formations. Table 3 relates bit size and weight to the strength of the rock. The major advantage of rotary drilling is its rapid drilling rate. This is due to the fact that, unlike percussion drilling, rock penetration is uniform with depth. Biology opens a new frontier for the mining industry. With rising environmental concerns, the need to couple conventional chemical and physical technologies with sustainable approaches is pressing. At Allonnia, we harness microbial processes to create innovative and environmentally responsible technologies with broad applications. The native microbial community (microbiome) remains largely unexplored at most mining sites, unlike the geochemical environment. The exploration of complex biological reactions that could transform mining technology is just starting and holds vast possibilities, spanning bio-cementation, carbon sequestration, ore beneficiation, water mitigation, bioleaching, metals recovery, and more. Allonnia has collected samples from mine sites in Australia, Africa, and North America to characterize the microbiome and uncover the genetic potential present in mineral-rich environments. We are evaluating microbial metabolites that selectively solubilize gangue from various ores. In addition, biological reactions hold promise as tailings stabilizers. Our early efforts illustrate exciting prospects for harnessing biology’s potential in mining.
