"Each January, tunneling and underground professionals gather in New York City for the George A. Fox Conference. The one-day event offers attendees the opportunity to listen to their peers outline what’s new in the underground construction industry, get updates on major projects in North America and have a chance to catch up of old friends.The conference is put on by the Underground Construction Association of SME. This latest conference attracted about 370 specialists in the industry. The theme for this year’s event was “Water Tunnels, Past, Present and Future.”The technical session included talks focused on major tunneling projects, including the massive California Water Fix program and the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) Metropolitan tunnel redundance program in Boston. The conference also included an update on the Gateway Project from Phil Rice from WSP and Mahammed Nasim of Amtrak as well as a Tunnel Industry update.The following is a sample of a few of the presentations. Technical presentationsDEP’s Tunneling Program Evolution. James Mueller is the agency chief engineer of New York City’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). Its mission is to plan sustainable infrastructure investments for the future of clean water and the environment in the city and its watersheds, he said. The agency’s goals are to synthesize information across bureaus within DEP to allow data-driven decision-making. It is also to optimize internal agency processes and systems related to the implmenation of engineering programs within a structured assessment process. The agency also prioritizes projects and funding within a structured integrated planning process. And it standardizes project performance and delivery to meet the needs of the agency in alignment with industry standards and market capabilities."

A quiet revolution has taken place in the conveyor belt industry, Man-made materials, improved production facilities, better splicing techniques and emphasis on repair and maintenance have all contributed substantially to lowering material handling costs for the mining industry, It wasn't too many years ago that the rubber industry had only cotton for a belt carcass and tree grown rubber for the protective cover. Then came the development of monofilament rayon. This material had desirable elongation and elastic properties and was the first synthetic fiber to be used in place of cotton. But wet strength and other limitations restricted its use, and the conveyor belt industry turned to nylon. Initially, nylon was considered suitable only for the cross threads or filler threads of a belt carcass. Then technical advancements in heat setting and fabric weave created a major change in belt construction. As a result of these advances the industry was able to take advantage of the full tension strength of nylon cord. Another breakthrough in the use of synthetics was the tremendous increase in adhesion resulting from a chemical bond, rather than the limited physical bond available with cotton. But the advantages of nylon had a more Car-reaching effect, We were able to design a two-ply nylon belt that did the work of a four- or five-ply cotton or rayon belt. A six-ply nylon belt now replaces a twelve-ply cotton elevator belt. Arid nylon resists moisture, acid and mildew, It also has excellent resistance to impact and can be produced with controlled elongation and elastic properties that work to great advantage in reduced-ply belt constructions.

Conducting full-scale fire experiments in underground mines is difficult and expensive. Sometimes, it is impossible to carry out fire tests in mines due to the danger they pose to mine workers and the underground facilities. However, understanding the potential occurrence of fires in a mine and their dynamics is critical to developing an appropriate emergency evacuation plan, fire suppression, and firefighting techniques. In this study, a numerical fire model using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with fire dynamics simulator (FDS) 6.7.6 was developed to examine the influence of tunnel bifurcation on maximum temperature beneath a tunnel ceiling. The model was validated using full-scale experimental data. The maximum ceiling gas temperature predicted using FDS and measured maximum smoke temperature during the experiment shows good agreement. The study shows that bifurcation could lower the maximum ceiling temperature of fire-induced smoke in a subsurface environment. The findings from this study apply to the broader field of ventilation and fire life safety in tunnels and other underground environments.

San Diego’s need to access underground space has dictated a long history of tunnel construction. The subsequent need for water, coupled with San Diego’s natural attractiveness, has led to significant population increases and the need for the construction of even more tunnels. This paper will provide a historical summary of the progression of mines, tunnels and trenchless technology construction projects that contributed to the advance of current technology, feasibility, and constructability. A bibliography of relevant reports and data is included.

A tube bundle system (TBS) is a mechanical system for continuously drawing gas samples through tubes from multiple monitoring points located in an underground coal mine. The gas samples are drawn via vacuum pump to the surface and are typically analyzed for oxygen, methane, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. Results of the gas analyses are displayed and recorded for further analysis. Trends in the composition of the mine atmosphere, such as increasing methane or carbon monoxide concentration, can be detected early, permitting rapid intervention that prevents problems, such as a potentially explosive atmosphere behind seals, fie or spontaneous combustion. TBS is a well-developed technology and has been used in coal mines around the world for more than 50 years. most longwall coal mines in australia deploy a TBS, usually with 30 to 40 monitoring points as part of their atmospheric monitoring. The primary uses of a TBS are detecting spontaneous combustion and maintaining sealed areas inert. The TBS might also provide mine atmosphere gas composition data after a catastrophe occurs in an underground mine, if the sampling tubes are not damaged. TBSs are not an alternative to statutory gas and ventilation airflowmonitoring by electronic sensors or people; rather, they are an option to consider in an overall mine atmosphere monitoring strategy. This paper describes the hardware, software and operation of a TBS and presents one example of typical data from a longwall coal mine.

"In view of the decade long decline in worldwide mine equipment productivity and with heavy economic pressures and survival at risk, improvements for those remaining in the game are essential. The latest Multifactor Productivity data for the US mining industry indicates a continuing descent with Australia on a similar course. The world’s mining industry has a fleet of over 400 large draglines moving billions of tons of material annually. The most efficient use of this equipment resource will provide a competitive advantage to those companies who are committed to improving performance. A dragline monitoring system is a requirement for optimum operations. The monitor reports the facts. Focused actions can change the facts and create improved performance. Analyzing monitor data to build knowledge and create understanding is a beginning. Understanding the key productivity indicators for dragline operations and an effective benchmarking process are the basis for improvement. There is overwhelming evidence that adopting new technologies and concepts including AC drive technology can and will bring about a step change in dragline operating cost with improved production performance.STATE OF THE MINING INDUSTRY A high altitude review of the state of the mining industry provided by a study of multifactor productivity shows a continuation of lower and lower output year on year for the capital and labor inputs applied. The story is sadly similar for both U.S. mining and the Australian mining sector. In fact, according to PwC analysts the worlds mining equipment productivity has declined 20% over the past seven years. (Lumley, 2014) Although the reasons for the continuing decline in mining productivity are varied, the need for improvement is clear. The world’s mining industry fleet of well over 400 large draglines moves billions of tons of overburden and ore (phosphate, limestone, etc.) annually.This discussion will review a few of the tools available for improved productivity in dragline operations."

This paper provides updates to the paper published by the lead author at RETC 2011 with a summary of developments in technologies, products, and approaches to corrosion analyses of gravity sewer tunnels and microtunnels. This paper presents approaches in evaluating degradation of reinforced concrete liners. Also, the carbon footprint of conventional concrete liners and alternative “green” liners are compared and their life cycle costs are considered. A few case histories from the past decade are provided indicating the latest and emerging trends in liner protection.

Mott MacDonald and Project Management Advisors are providing Technical and Project Management services for San Diego County for the Courthouse Commons Project. The Courthouse Commons Project involves the redevelopment of three downtown blocks owned by San Diego County and construction of an Inmate Transfer Tunnel between the County Central Jail and the San Diego Central Court. The tunnel will be 327 feet long, crosses the San Diego Fault and is being constructed using the Sequential Excavation Method (SEM). This paper discusses the history and procure‑ ment strategy for the project, the technical aspects of the transfer tunnel and the con‑ struction progress of the tunnel to date.

In reviewing available vacuum filtration equipment in this paper, several types of filters have been included which are probably not familiar to operators in the mining industry. However, it was felt that these units might be of interest in the event that an application should arise for the filtration of a product in the future that does not exist today. In addition, exposure of our industry to equipment used in other industries might have a tendency to be thought provoking and perhaps lead to the development of equipment and/or applications in our industry which do not necessarily exist at this time. Most innovations in filtration equipment have been confined to the improvement or design change of components and accessories, particularly reflecting the availability of materials of construction that have been developed. Recent developments in the application of horizontal belt filters have been innovative. The application of this unit as a substitute for or an adjunct to thickeners in a CO circuit can certainly be innovative and perhaps provide a basis for reduction in capital and operating costs in this area. For example, mill tails are generally pumped at the highest possible density that will adequately flow. Tailings ponds and dams with their attendant design requirements are based upon this estimated water volume. Availability of a much dryer, non-flowing filter cake opens up several new options for disposal. Considerable cost savings could result in the design and planning of disposal areas for containing dryer material. . No attempt has been made in this paper to provide a manual for the operation of all of the many types of equipment that are available. Rather, the paper tries to present an overview.

This paper will describe the copper concentrate slurry pipeline and pumping system between the concentrator and the port at Bougainville Copper Ltd. The operations of Bougainville Copper Ltd. are located on the island of Bougainville in the South Pacific. Geographically, it is the northernmost island of the Solomon Group but, politically, it is part of Papua New Guinea. Papua New Guinea is a United Nations Trust territory administered by Australia, having recently been given self-government, with independence scheduled for December 1974. (Fig. 1). The island is approximately 130 miles long by 30 miles wide, with the Crown Prince mountain range forming a spine along its length. The mountains in place are over 8,000 feet high with the mine located on the western flank at an elevation of 2,200 feet. Exploration on Bougainville for copper by Conzinc Riotinto of Australia (CRA) began in 1963 and by 1968, through geophysical, geochemical and diamond drilling methods, an orebody containing nearly one billion tons of ore grading approximately 0.48% Cu. and sane gold had been outlined. Bougainville Copper Ltd., the company operating the mine, is 53.6% wined by CRA, 20% mined by the government of Papua New Guinea with the public Folding the remainder of the shares. With the increasing demand for minerals and the decline in the quality of ore reserves, technologies to maximize recovery are critical to a mine?s economic success. Many mining waters exhibit the potential to form hardness-based inorganic scales, which inhibit effective mineral recovery. Often, a continuously-fed chemical deposit control program is implemented by the mine site to inhibit these scales. The use of retractable scale coupons is the current industry standard for monitoring these programs; however, a key drawback to their use is the limited, and sometimes untimely amount of information they provide. A proprietary fouling analyzer has been developed that can be used to continuously monitor the formation of inorganic scales in mining process streams. Consequently, it can be used to continually, and more effectively, communicate the efficacy of an antiscalant program, thereby providing the ability to compare different scale control programs and to optimize their feedrates. Case studies presented validate the applicability of this technology to help optimize mineral recovery.

For urban underground development involving tieback anchors for excavation support, authorities having jurisdiction typically require tiebacks to be de-tensioned before project completion. This paper updates “A Proactive Approach to Tieback Anchor De-tensioning” (by Peterfreund and Finn, published in the 2017 RETC Proceedings), which discussed a new method employed in a cut-and-cover transit station project. Since publication of that paper, 237 tiebacks were successfully and rapidly detensioned from using a small-diameter drill to cut strands from the surface. To the authors’ knowledge, this was the first intentional large-scale use of a drilling method for this purpose.

Dump leaching and ,in-situ solution mining have received considerable attention during the past few years due to their apparent economic viability and minimal environmental impact. Solution mining actually dates back to the 17th century when leaching of copper ore was first reported. However-, modern day leaching didn't begin on a wide scale until the mid-1900's. In-situ mining for copper, nickel, salts, and oil shale is currently looking more attractive as the technology advances. Presently, about 15 percent of the copper production in the United States is from leaching operations at approximately 14 active sites, the largest of which are the waste dumps near the Bingham Copper Mine, Utah. To establish a common background, the discussion is centered around state-of-the-art conditions. For dump leaching, complications inherent to the physical conditions and chemical reactions such as channeling, porosity and permeability, sorption, air flow, rock alteration and pH control are discussed. Emphasis is made on those conditions which render solution recovery rates and solution mineral concentrations unpredictable. By illustrating typical and actual field conditions, the generally accepted flow theories for both dump leaching and in-situ solution mining, including rubblization, are presented. For in-situ mining, hydrogeologic techniques such as geophysical well logging, aquifer testing and digital computer modeling are also discussed. Silver ore was discovered at Aspen in 1879, but the district did not reach full production until 1888 after lawsuits were settled and railroads furnished less expensive transportation to the outside world. The boom years were 1888-92; production declined thereafter. From the middle 1920's until 1950, the Midnight mine in the Richmond Hill district furnished most of the output in the Aspen quadrangle. Since 1950, little mining has been done at Aspen. The metals produced were silver, lead and zinc. Native silver dissolved from the sulfide ores was redeposited by waters circulating as deep as 300 m below the land surface, resulting in great secondary enrichment of many of the deposits. Over 100 million ounces of silver were produced in the Aspen quadrangle. Low-grade lead-zinc deposits remain between the old workings locally, and data available suggest that primary ore below levels mined is also of low grade. The ore occurs in the Mississippian Leadville Limestone and the lower part of the Pennsylvanian Belden Formation in sites that were made favorable for deposition by a number of stratigraphic and structural factors.

In underground stopes that require more than minimal support, backfill is almost universally used. The term cut and fill stopingis used in a broad sense in this section, which describes underground mining methods requiring support. Support in stopes can be classified as local or short-term and general or long-term. Local support for the back of a stope, for example, can be accomplished with rock bolts or timber stulls. General support for the walls of the stope is provided by backfill. Local support provides a safe working place for the stope miners. General support, provided by backfill, preserves the access way to the stope and prevents large scale dilution of ore. The paper’s intent is to evaluate pumpable foamed cementitious mine seal material by determining the shear strength of a generic foamed cement in the laboratory. The tests were conducted on three scales: small-size specimens, consisting of cylinders 4 in. in diameter or 3-in. prisms; double shear medium- size specimens, measuring 13 in. by 10 in.; and large-size specimens, measuring 6 ft by 4 ft by 4 ft. The small-specimen shear tests resulted in average peak and residual shear strengths of 128 psi and 56 psi, respectively. These values are fairly consistent with published shear strengths of foamed cementitious material. However, the other two types of shear tests did not achieve the shear strength of a typical pumpable foamed cementitous mine seal material. Based on the test results, the paper concluded that the structural analysis of cement foam seals should be based on their residual shear strengths, approximately 20 psi, determined from small laboratory-scale tests of the cement foam/concrete or rock interface, and not be based on their peak strengths.

Although blasting remains the most inexpensive method of fragmentation in hardrock mining, the significance of the costs of blast-induced rockmass damage in terms of mining efficiency and safety is becoming increasingly recognized. There is no straightforward and systematic method of adequately measuring blast damage in on-going mining operations. This paper considers various techniques available to measure blast damage, making particular reference to recent underground hardrock mine studies. It concludes by proposing a damage audit procedure for integration into routine mine production control.

The 500-kt/a (550,000-stpy) refinery in Burnside, LA, owned by Almatis Inc. produced specialty alumina used in the abrasives, ceramics, chemical and refractory industries. The 1.2-Mt/a (1.32 million-stpy) refinery in Gramercy, LA, owned by Noranda Alumina LLC produced alumina mostly for use in aluminum smelters but also produced specialty alumina. An upgrade project at the Gramercy refinery to convert 200 kt/a (220,000 stpy) of capacity to produce more profitable specialty alumina was completed in the first half of 2018, and another project to increase capacity was started but a completion schedule was not available. The amount of new capacity was not disclosed, but it would be used to produce nonmetallurgical grade alumina. The 2.3-Mt/a (2.5 million-stpy) refinery in Point Comfort, TX, which was temporarily shut down in March 2016, remained closed throughout the year."

More than 5,300 mining professionals from around the world attended the SME Annual Meeting and Exhibit, March 1-3 in Denver, CO. Seventy three technical sessions highlighted innovative technologies and applications for the development of mineral resources. And the exhibit featured 421 companies worldwide and 632 exhibit booths. The 1999 SME Annual Meeting had 10% international attendance. Professionals from outside the United States were guests at the first SME International Reception.

Grupo Acera, HYLSA originated in 1942 when Hojalata y Lamina began operations to supply steel strip for the Cuauhtémoc Brewery, the parent company. Production began in April, 1943 with growth accelerated because of World War II. By 1948 the company was producing its own steel from electric furnaces charged with scrap iron. Further expansion was hampered by the fluctuations in availability, price and quality of scrap iron. As a result, a search was made for a suitable process to enable HYLSA to satisfy its need for a reliable source of feed for its steel-making facilities. Their relatively low iron requirements at the time did not justify the very high capital investments required using the conventional blast furnace method. Processes which by-passed the blast furnaces were very much in their infancy and were not commercially tested. HYLSA then undertook an investigation of the direct reduction processes, knowing full well that much larger companies in other countries had investigated several processes but their work had not established a trend toward direct reduction or any particular process. However, after much effort and persistence HYLSA arrived at a process which suited their conditions. By using Mexican iron ore and natural gas they developed the now well-known H. y L. Process to produce sponge iron. Concurrent with the start of investigations which led to the H. y L. Process, HYLSA began an exploration program for a suitable source of iron ore. Thus in 1951, Cia. Minera Las Encinas, S.A. was formed, culminating in the development of the ore bodies near Pihuamo in the State of Jalisco. Mining commenced and ore was
