In-situ mining of hard rock deposits will only become successful as we understand the engineering parameters involved and the design limitations they impose. As recognized by Wadsworth1 the most critical area is the enhancement of permeability in a hard rock mass. Along with creating permeability, the appropriate flow and fragment size conditions must be generated to insure economic rates of mineral recovery. In this article our interest is confined to true in-situ processes in which boreholes are drilled from the ground surface or a mine drift to deeper strata. We assume that fractures and permeability enhancement will be due to explosives detonated in boreholes. Other techniques such as hydraulic fracturing do not produce the necessary size distribution to promote economic extract ion rates unless the medium is already highly fractured and interconnected. Notable exceptions where hydraulic fracturing is applicable are many oil, gas and salt deposits. For many in-situ processes, an array of explosive charges offers the opportunity of creating a distribution of many fractures not achievable by other techniques. Such a situation would be suitable, for example, to in-situ mine hard rock gold, uranium, copper or oil shale deposits and may enhance oil and gas recovery in certain situations. The purpose of our article is to review and extend the explosive permeability theory of McKee and Hanson 3,4,5 and to apply its results to derive design parameters suitable for in-situ mining.

During the past decade we have witnessed spectacular improvements in productivity of open pit mining equipment. Thousand-horsepower engines, 200-ton trucks and 15-yard electric shovels, which such a short time ago were just dreams on a drawing board, are now realities. More productive equipment and metal shortages have encouraged increased production at existing mines and the development of new larger tonnage operations. Operators and engineers have been able to employ computers and various other types of automation to "stay on top of things". The mine geologist, however, is merely faced with a bigger and more rapidly changing pit to pick in. Keeping geologic information current in these mines presents entirely new problems to mine geological staffs. To obtain adequate geologic information on the developing orebody requires enlargement of the staff to share the work load or revision of methods in keeping with the times. The former has the disadvantage of loss of the comprehensive knowledge of the pit that a chief geologist likes to have, not to mention management's usual lack of enthusiasm for force increases.

The molybdenite flotation plant at the Magma Copper Co. San Manuel concentrator has been in operation since 1956. In January of 1980, the plant was converted from a hydrogen peroxide-ferrocyanide process to the current sodium cyanide-sodium hydro- sulfide process. This paper is an operational review of Magma Copper Co.'s molybdenite recovery circuit, column cell flotation experience, and use of on-stream X-ray fluorescence analysis.

A process does not have higher capacity than what can pass through its bottleneck. Acknowledging this, and with the goal to optimize production at a minimum investment, one can use existing equipment, modify the process flow and make a few strategic capital investments. Automatic setting regulation is a technology that allows balanced crusher performance matching minute changes in feed material characteristics. Prior to April, 1961, the coal charge to Clairtonts coke oven batteries was 3" x 0" mine waslied coal having approximately 6.0% to 7.0% moisture. Even at this size and moisture content, the arching, rat-holing and hang-up was excessive and the effective live storage of coal was only 60% to 70% of the rated capacity of the coal bunkers, depending upon the moisture of the coal. In addition, many production delays were encountered in the time and methods required to fill the larry cars. The need for an improved metallurgical coke led to the introduction of pulverized coal to a portion of the plant in 196 1. When the full potential of the pulverizing equipment was realized, we were able to serve seven batteries in our second unit of batteries with pulverized coal through two coal bunkers. The discharge hoppers of these bunkers were equipped with air vibrators to assist the flow of pulverized coal into the larry cars. The vibrators were helpful in this respect but required considerable maintenance and caused damage to the bin plates.

Introduction The term kaolin is derived from kauling, a Chinese word meaning high ridge. This was the name of a hill in China where kaolin was first mined several hundred years ago (Murray, 1976). Other common names used for kaolin include clay and China Clay. Clay technically has a broader meaning and could refer to bentonite and ball clay as well as kaolin. China clay, as a descriptive term, apparently results from kaolin's origin. But it could also be due to a significant historical use in ceramic applications. The terms kaolin and clay will be used interchangeably in this analysis because of the common practice of using these terms in the paper industry. Major reasons for kaolin's wide-spread industrial usages center on kaolinite's physical features of good color, low viscosity, and inertness. Kaolin is described as a hydrous aluminum silicate with an approximate composition of 2H2O • A12O3 . 2SiO2. A new version of the product is calcined clay with modified hydration content. It is gaining widespread use. Components of any particular kaolin, in addition to alumina and silica, are viewed as impurities. The more values deposits and, hence, higher priced kaolin products are those of the highest purity. Kaolin is the most widely used mineral in paper manufacturing throughout the world. Key production centers are located in England and the US. Most of the Tatter's production is located in Georgia. The key markets for Georgia kaolin are paper markets - both paper coating and paper filling. These paper markets extend throughout the world, not just to domestic markets. In fact, export markets are second in size only to domestic paper markets for Georgia's producers of kaolin. Just as the paper markets are important for kaolin producers, kaolin is an important raw material for papermakers. Compared to the other three major pigments - titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate, and talc - kaolin's 1984 tonnage for papermaking represented 85% of the total. Even though titanium dioxide's unit value is much higher, kaolin's estimated total 1984 value still represented 51% of total dollars spent by papermakers for the four pigments. Kaolin grades- are briefly defined using particle size and brightness as principal means of classification. Likewise, grades of papers using kaolin are defined using the American Paper Institute's guidelines. From these definitions, associated kaolin grades used in particular grades of paper are reviewed. Special emphasis is placed on how qualities desired in certain papers are achieved through the use of specialized kaolin grades. The Bushveld Complex of South Africa contains almost 90% of the world’s reserves of platinum group minerals (PGMs). In the flotation of PGMs, there are significant challenges arising from the need to treat ever-decreasing grades of the relevant ore deposits. The major challenge in the flotation of these ore bodies is the control and management of the gangue minerals, particularly silicates such as orthopyroxene and plagioclase feldspar which are often rimmed with talc which makes them naturally floatable. It has been shown that various polysaccharide depressants such as CMC and guar have different properties in terms of depressing the gangue minerals. Since the PGMs are often associated with sulphides, copper sulphate is widely used as an activator in PGM flotation but can inadvertently activate the gangue minerals and reduce the recovery of PtTe2 which accounts for up to 40% of the Pt in the Platreef ore body. Depressants also reduce the mass of solids reporting to the froth and can thus destabilize the froth. This effect on the froth can be mitigated by using higher frother dosages or water of higher ionic strength. In summary due care needs to be taken to carry out site test work to develop an optimum ratio of collector, frother, activator and depressant to ensure that the highest grades and recoveries of the PGEs are obtained while reducing depressant dosage as much as possible. Chromite recoveries can be reduced through the application of gravity separation or reducing entrainment through reduced water recovery. INTRODUCTION The Bushveld Complex located in the north of South Africa contains the world’s largest deposit of Platinum Group Minerals (PGMs) (1). The so-called upper Critical Zone of the Complex hosts the largest concentration of platinum group elements (PGEs) in the world. The Zone hosts the Upper Group Chromitite No.2 (UG2) reef and Merensky Reef as well as the Platreef mineralization of the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex. The Merensky pegmatoid Zone contains the base metal sulphide grains and associated PGMs. Of particular importance to the topic of this paper is the occurrence in these reefs of various gangue minerals. The Merensky Reef consists predominantly of orthopyroxene (~60%), plagioclase feldspar (~20%), pyroxene (~15%), phlogopite (5%) and occasional olivine. Secondary minerals such as talc, serpentine, chlorite and magnetite have widespread occurrence. Of these, talc is the only mineral to show significant natural floatability (2,3). Although present in small amounts talc is closely associated with pyroxene and imparts significant floatablity to the high concentrations of pyroxene present in these ores (4). The base metal sulphides consist predominantly of pyrrohtite (~40%), pentlandite (~30%) and chalcopyrite (~15%). The major platinum group minerals are cooperite (PtS), braggite [(Pt,Pd)NiS], sperrylite (PtAs2) and PGE alloys. The UG2 consists predominantly of chromite (between 60 – 90% by volume) with lesser silicate minerals (5 – 30% pyroxene and 1 – 10% plagioclase). Other minerals present in minor concentrations, can include silicates, oxides and base metal sulphides. Total PGE varies by locality but on average range between 4 and 7 g/t. The PGMs present in the UG2 Reef are highly variable, but generally the UG2 is characterised by PGE sulphides such as laurite (RuS2), cooperite (PtS) and braggite [(Pt,Pd)NiS. The base metal sulphides consist predominantly of chalcopyrite, pentlandite and pyrrhotite. The Platreef is located in the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex. This reef consists of a complex assemblage of rock types, with pyroxenites, serpentinites and calc-silicates being the most abundant. Base metal mineralization and platinum group element (PGE) concentrations are found to be highly irregular, both in value as well as in distribution. Materials demands by the advancing process technologies, desire for higher performance and durability, and improved efficiency in combustion processes, such as applications in heat engines, heat exchanges, and batteries have added to the driving force fueling R&D efforts for the development of components with the combined characteristics of metals and non-metals. These new materials involve refined and specialized microstructures that can lead to improvements in the performance characteristics and durability new technological applications require. Fabrication and sintering methods, once believed to be sufficient, alone, have been found to be inadequate in the manufacture of such advanced components. Realization of the importance of the starting powders has led to efforts to produce materials of ultrahigh purity and ultrafine particle size with very narrow particle size distributions. Such powder characteristics are essential for the fabrication of components with high density and with the desired mechanical, electrical, or magnetic properties called for by the specific application. Novel ultrafine and ultrapure powder preparation techniques are discussed and effects of impurities on the powder characteristics, particle size and morphology, sintering behavior and properties of the finished product are elucidated.

Tunnel boring machines (TBM) utilize disc cutters as the primary means for excavating hard rock. Depending on rock excavatability and rock abrasivity disc cutters can exhibit significant wear. A detailed analysis has been carried out to characterize failure modes and wear patterns of disc cutters. The relationship between rock properties, op-eration of the TBM, and failure modes of cutting tools is clearly high-lighted. On that basis a prediction tool for disc cutter consumption has been developed that allows to estimate not only gross cutter life, but accounts for cutterhead design, premature cutter changes, and disc cutter repair costs.

"PROJECTThe “Caltanissetta” Tunnel is part of the ANAS S.p.A (National Autonomous Roads Corporation) $ 1.3 Billion Highway 640 Caltanissetta-Agrigento (Sicily, Italy) Rehabilitation Project, consisting in upgrading of 62 km (40 miles) of highway. The Italian multinational construction company Cooperativa Muratori & Cementisti di Ravenna, is the General Contractor for the design and build contract. The highway S.S. 640 starts from Porto Empedocle, to the intersection with the Motorway A 19 Catania-Palermo.The entire project, double carriageway designed for speed 70-120 km/h and maximum longitudinal slope of 4.2%, is divided into two sections. First Section: just finished and opened to traffic. Second Section: mainly involving the province of Caltanissetta, length about 28 km (18 miles), works started in 2013. This second section includes the most challenging work of all the project, the “Caltanissetta” tunnel consisting of two separate tubes, each with 3.9 km length and inside diameter of 13.50 m, in order to host 2 traffic lines and an emergency line. HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL ALIGNMENT - GEOLOGY AND HYDROGEOLOGYThe plan alignment of “Caltanissetta” tunnel is formed by two tubes which are located at a minimum mutual distance of 22 m to a maximum of 63 m, with n. 9 pedestrian and n. 4 road cross passages; ventilation shafts are not provided. Overburden over portals area is about 5 m till a maximum of 120 m. Tunnel sections have variable longitudinal slope from 2.6% to 0.5%, transversal slope of about 3.5%. Right tube length is 3,992 m, left tube length is 3,877 m."

Recent scientific studies by researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) presented the worst-case explosion pressures that can develop if a methane-air mixture of a certain composition and dimension accumulates and ignites within a sealed area of a mine. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) issued its final rule on sealing of abandoned areas which considers potential explosion pressures and the risk of achieving the necessary conditions. The new MSHA seals regulation has increased the pressure design criteria an order of magnitude beyond the old standard of 140 kPa (20 psi) to 800 kPa (120 psi). However, there still are major knowledge gaps pertaining to seals and sealed areas including: (1) the composition of the sealed area atmosphere and how it changes in time and space, (2) explosion pressures that might actually develop within sealed areas, (3) engineering procedures to follow when designing seals and seal installations, and (4) guidelines to manage the atmosphere within sealed areas with monitoring or inertization. NIOSH has initiated a seals research program with collaborators from Safety in Mines Testing and Research Station (SIMTARS) in Australia, West Virginia University (WVU), the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), and USACE. Highlights of progress so far include: (1) construction of a gas explosion tube at Lake Lynn Laboratory for studying large methane-air explosions, (2) computer simulation of the fluid dynamics of high pressure methane-air explosions, (3) development of seal analysis methods considering construction materials, reinforcement and the seal foundation, and (4) development and testing of innovative seal designs that utilize inexpensive, readily-available rock rubble to resist high explosion pressures. NIOSH researchers aim to provide sound engineering guidelines to better address the new MSHA seal regulations. Sulphur as an element has been used for centuries. The technique of storing, handling and transporting it in its various forms has changed through the years. Freeport Sulphur Company, a division of Freeport Minerals Company, has produced sulphur since 1912. The first storing and transporting of this product as a liquid began in 1947. Significant environmental problems occurred in the handling of solid sulphur in the late fifties and early sixties. Since the sulphur WAS produced in the liquid form and the major customers used it in the liquid form, it became obvious that a liquid transportation system was the solution. The liquid sulphur delivery eliminated the dusty and hazardous handling problems and the contamination of the sulphur by dirt, acid, moisture and other materials. The remelting by the customer to use the sulphur is thusly eliminated with a savings in energy. In addition, this change in the mode of handling permitted a broad development of new sulphur mines in the marshy coastal area of Louisiana and offshore in the Gulf of Mexico.

The support of intersections in coal mines remains an important safety issue, mainly because the large diagonal span compromises the stability of the roof. This structural weakness is further exacerbated if the intersection is developed incorrectly, the pillar corners fail or the crosscuts are angled (not perpendicular). This report details the current support systems used and investigates unplanned falls of ground in intersections in coal mines throughout the United States. A possible failure mechanism is proposed and some suggestions are made to improve the effectiveness of the support in these vital areas.

Introduction The gas shortage is going to be with us for some time to come. If we can set aside political and industry rhetoric (along with subjective personal opinions), we still are confronted by two serious "facts of life": (1) for almost a decade the U.S. has been consuming natural gas at a greater rate than we have been finding new reserves; and (2) there is a finite amount of natural gas present within the earth&apos;s crust. Much of the known and easily exploitable sources of gas (the so-called "conventional" sources, such as the high permeability sand reservoirs of the Tertiary sequence along the Gulf Coast) already have been developed; their production is declining rapidly. The total producible reserves from conventional gas reservoirs amount to only 216 Tcf, less than an 11-year supply. However, several large potential resources of natural gas remain to be developed. These "unconventional sources" have low permeability and/or peculiar producing characteristics. The DOE program for development of these unconventional sources of gas is called the enhanced gas recovery (EGR) program. The primary goal of this program is to provide a data base of resource characterization and production technology that will lead to commercial development. DOE will encourage and support industry participation in developing and demonstrating technologies needed to reach this goal. Unconventional Resources Four major unconventional resources of gas have a high potential for commercial development. There are other unconventional sources (such as gas hydrates) that are too poorly defined to warrant a major development thrust at this time. The four unconventional sources of gas currently included in the EGR program are: 1. The carbonaceous shales of Devonian age in the Appalachian, Illinois, and Michigan sedimentary basins are the targets of the Eastern Gas Shales Project (EGSP). 2. The low permeability, low porosity so-called "tight" gas sandstones of the Upper Cretaceous/Lower Tertiary in the Rocky Mountain areas constitute the resource target for the Western Gas Sands Project (WGSP). 3. The free methane trapped in coal beds of both the eastern and western U. S. constitute the Methane from Coal Beds Project (MCBP). 4. The abnormally high pressured, high-temperature saltwater aquifers of the Texas-Louisiana gulf coast are targets of the Geopressured Aquifer Project (GPAP). Basic implementation strategy for these EGR projects involve (1) assessing and characterizing the resource potential of the resource; (2) conducting cost-shared field testing with industry to improve, develop, and demonstrate various stimulation and production technologies; (3) coordinating EGR activities within DOE and with other federal agencies (such as the Bureau of Mines) to minimize duplication; and (4) aiming all projects toward commercial development of the gas resources. EGSP What type of "geological animal" is the EGSP dealing with? While gas undeniably is related to the occurrence of natural fracture systems within the shale, the overall producing mechanism and precise location of fractured, gas-bearing locales within each basin is still poorly understood. By developing reliable resource characterization techniques and applying effective stimulation technologies we intend to elevate the Devonian shale from the status of a potential gas resource to that of a proven gas reserve. Once we have done this the private sector can take over the large-scale commercial development of the Devonian shale gas resource. WGSP The second largest project (both in terms of complexity and level of funding) is the WGSP. The primary targets for this project are the low permeability (< 1 md) gas sandstones of the Piceance, Uintah, and Greater Green River basins and the Northern Great Plains Province. Project success in these four primary geologic locales will permit investigating additional low permeability sandstones in 16 other sedimentary basins. It appears that the only practical means of increasing permeability and resultant flow rates from these sandstones lies in the use of massive hydraulic fracturing techniques. Selective-reductive leaching of manganese from low-grade manganese ore using tannic acid as a reductant in acidic media was demonstrated by XRD, SEM-EDX characterization, and batch leaching studies at room temperature. The pH change in the liquid phase before and after leaching revealed that selectivity of manganese over iron was due to the hydrolysis of iron. The acidity in the liquid phase during leaching was dictated by two mechanisms: proton-consuming reaction (manganese oxide reduction by tannic acid) and proton-producing reaction (ferric ion reduction by tannic acid to produce ferrous ion). Based on the leaching studies, the more prevalent reaction between these two was determined by initial leaching conditions: tannic acid concentration, sulfuric acid concentration, liquid-solid ratio, temperatures, and agitation time. Kinetic studies revealed that maximum recovery was attained within 6-h agitation, which indicated a product layer diffusion process.

The 1987-88 Denver Brown Cloud Study was performed to determine the sources of the particle cloud which forms over Denver each winter. The study was organized under the leadership of Colorado Governor Roy Romer , EPA Region VIII and the Greater Denver Chamber of Commerce. The study was sponsored by over 40 organizations representing governmental agencies, the natural gas industry, the coal industry, utilities, oil companies, railroads, the motor vehicle industry, and other Denver area companies and organizations. The cost of the study was $1.5 million which was raised almost entirely from private sources. The study team was headed by Dr. John Watson of the Desert Research Institute of the University of Nevada. Dr. Watson is a recognized expert in conducting studies of this type.

Heat transfer in partially wet mine airways has been the subject of study for quite some time. Of the available models some are quite empirical while some involve highly complicated computation. Models developed by Amano, Mizuta and Hiramatsu and Banerjee and Chernyak as well as that modified by Misra were evaluated for prediction of the rise in temperature and humidity (mixing ratio ) of partially wet mine airways at four different levels in the Mosaboni Mine of Hindustan Copper Ltd. Measurements of barometric pressure, virgin-rock temperature and changes in dry- and wet-bulb temperatures along a certain length of airway were made. The rise in dry-bulb temperature and mixing ratio of air over the sections were calculated using the three models. The study reveals that calculated values of temperature and moisture content agree within possible rage of experimental error with all the three models in case of three levels with low wetness factor, but the agreement was poor for the relatively more wet airway on the 30th level. Errors in the estimation of fw to the tune of 0.025 can lead to fair error up to 0.94 K in the estimated temperature while alternative ways of estimating the heat transfer coefficient [] can introduce errors up to 1.45 K.

After 30 years of success, Newmont Gold Company has temporarily ceased production from the original Carlin Pit. In late 1993, the Carlin East Decline was driven and an extensive underground exploration program was started. Today, Newmont Gold produces refractory ore from the Carlin East underground at the rate of 700 t/d (770 stpd) for an annual production of over 100,000 ounces. Over 70 underground miners enjoy the estimated 6-year mine life at Carlin East. About 70% of the ore at Carlin East is mined by mechanized longhole stoping with delayed cemented backfill. The remaining ore is mined by underhand drift and cemented fill methods.

So far my consulting in industrial minerals has been confined principally to carbonate rocks,-salt, coking coal, and glass sand. Much of this work has been for companies either too small for a full-time geological staff or unaware of the value of employing one or more qualified geologists permanently. It gave me considerable personal satisfaction to see several of the latter companies employ one or two full-time geologists after the completion of a consulting contract with them. One possible reason why some companies lack the wisdom to hire geologists is that they are dominated by engineers who still subscribe to the old idea that engineers are self-sufficient in all fields. They could have learned this from their professors. I once knew a Dean of Engineering who got purple in the face when a faculty committee was discussing the financing of a broad gauged engineering project and suggestions were made that assistance be obtained from the Schools of Business and Law and from some of the science departments tie pounded the table and shouted "Engineers are trained to handle all this!" In teaching engineering geology some years ago I used to tell the class repeatedly that the course would not make them geologists, that the purpose was to teach them

This study aims to investigate the effect of combined mechanical and ultrasonic milling on the size reduction of talc. First, the talc sample was wet-ground in a stirred media mill for five different lengths of time (30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 min), and the optimum result was subsequently achieved with treatment by ultrasonication. The effects of amplitude (20, 35 and 50 µm), solid ratio (2.5, 5, 7.5 and 10 percent), and sonication time (60, 120 and 240 min) on the sizes of the final product were investigated. The pre-milling by wet grinding caused a decrease in the grinding resistance of talc. Sequential ultrasonic treatment, which was applied to the talc sample, generated smaller particles in comparison to those acquired by stirred media milling alone. Experimental results were assessed based on the product particle size (d10, d50 ), reduction ratio and specific energy consumption. Submicron particles prepared by ultrasonic treatment were highly stable compared to stirred media milling alone as investigated in terms of particle size. In addition, the effects of mechanical and ultrasonic milling on the structural properties of talc particles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis.
