Planning today for what hopefully will never happen is one of the surest ways to decrease the chance of it happening. As Napoleon proved and Ian Mitroff wrote, "The heat and stress of battle is the worst time to make decisions of strategic importance." Mitroff also wrote, "The value of a plan is not that it will ever perfectly match reality, but going through the process of planning speeds the process of recovery. It allows the organization to emotionally work through the worst before it actually happens." This paper concentrates on things miners must consider; on the need for plans to be like a belt conveyor strong enough to carry the load, flexible enough to stretch a little; on the criticality of throwing away fax machines and telephones, and having certain officials at the scene rather than back in head-quarters; on the training of fire brigades and mine-rescue teams; on having company-controlled chromatographs; on having people who can look at trends rather than numbers. Some of the things in this paper might anger some readers; for that, I can only ask them to consider first the problem not their position.

Lack of visibility from large, open-pit haulage truck cabs has become a serious safety problem. Anaconda conducted a research program to develop a low cost system to alert haulage truck operators to small vehicles present in blind areas. Several systems were developed and tested. As open-pit haulage truck size has increased, so has the size of the blind areas. Mine utility vehicles, pickup trucks, and cars are concealed within these blind areas and become safety hazards. Figure 1 shows the typical blind areas of a 136 t (150-ton) haulage truck. The areas of greatest concern are at the rear center and front right corner of the truck. In these "no visibility" areas many small vehicles have been crushed by large haulage trucks at various mine sites. In most instances, the occupants escaped the vehicle before it was destroyed. But injuries and death have occurred. In most cases, the accidents were attributed to negligence or carelessness by the small vehicle driver. The limited visibility problem still exists, though, and a solution is needed. Initial Solution The usual plane mirror on the driver's side and the convex mirror on the right front of the haulage truck allow only limited rear visibility. The typical, right side convex mirror is generally small and difficult to locate at a glance. This convex mirror also presents an image that distorts distance perception. These mirrors are of¬ten broken and immediate replacement not demanded or made. The US Bureau of Mines, in a contract with M.B. Associates, San Ramon, CA, developed an improved visibility system. It consisted of a larger, left view mirror and unique, blind area viewer. The large 230 x 690 mm (9 x 27 in.) left mirror has a small convex spot mirror near the bottom. The entire unit can be quickly replaced if broken. The large size provides a full view of driver orientation features such as the rear tire and the top of the load bed. The right 300 x 410 mm (12 x 16 in.) mirror has a convex surface and is quite rugged. The 510 mm (20 in.) spherical radius presents the operator with some distance distortion, but objects in its view are easily seen. The "blind area viewer" consists of a modified fresnel lens that allows the driver to "look around the corner." Installation of three of these lenses on the front of each haulage truck is rec¬ommended for adequate blind area coverage. This system significantly increases an operator's field of view and allows viewing of objects within about 3 m (9.8 ft of the truck. Many open-pit mines are nor mounting on smaller vehicles a long whip with a flag and lamp or both. This increases vehicle visibility to haulage truck operators. The whip is permanently attached to the mine vehicle. It can also be magnetically attached to transient vehicles. The whip system. though, is inadequate for visibility in the critical rear and right front blind areas. Alternate Solutions All of these visibility aids as¬sume an attentive driver. In addi¬tion, areas such as the rear blinc, area are not covered. Based on the inadequacy of existing visibility systems, Anaconda made a com mitment to further the truck de¬tection technology. The best ap¬proach was considered to be ar active system. It would notify the haulage truck operator that an en¬croaching vehicle is present. Sev¬eral systems were considered, in¬cluding ultrasonics and elec¬tromagnetics. For the ultrasonic system, com mercial and in-house design were looked at. Designing an( building transducers with the spe cific beam shape to match the haulage truck blind spots re¬quired a major technological breakthrough. False alarms ap¬peared difficult to prevent en¬tirely. They were caused by pass¬ing, trailing, or leading vehicles a., well as nonthreatening objects. "The paper discusses the results of 3D finite element analyses to investigate the effect of face support pressure and soil permeability on face stability conditions in EPB tunnelling. Two main types of face behavior are identified: Undrained conditions ahead of the tunnel face, typically occurring in soils with permeability less than about k=5·10-7m/s, are shown to be favourable for face stability; analyses show that an applied face pressure comparable with the initial hydrostatic pore pressure is sufficient for adequate face stability, even for soils of relatively low strength. Drained or partially conditions, typically occurring in soils with permeability higher than about k=5·10-6m/s, show that face stability is strongly dependent on the horizontal effective stress of the muck in the excavation chamber; the presence of even a small effective stress in the muck is very beneficial for face stability conditions and can be a possible explanation of successful EPB tunnelling through relatively permeable soils. INTRODUCTION Face stability is probably the most important aspect in urban tunnelling. Usually, Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) machines are utilized, to ensure that a reasonable amount of face pressure is exerted on the advancing excavation face, reducing ground loss and preventing potential instability of the face core, thus controlling the amount of disturbance caused by tunnel excavation to surface structures. However, the ideal amount of face pressure depends on several factors (ground and groundwater conditions, tunnel size and depth, muck conditioning, etc.) which are difficult to include in analytical calculations. For many years, conventional empirical or analytical methods (e.g. Anagnostou & Kovari 1996) were the only available tools for quantifying face stability and selecting the required face pressure. In the last few years, however, numerical analyses have gained power over conventional methods, allowing more accurate designs and providing useful information about the anticipated ground deformations due to tunnelling. Numerical analyses have also been used in assessing safety against face instability using face extrusion (horizontal face displacement) calculations (e.g. Prountzopoulos 2012)."

Analysing a flotation plant?s operating performance requires accurate metallurgical sampling. Typically, the aims of performing flotation plant surveys are to establish a consistent and accurate understanding of the operation of the circuit as well as to identify potential areas for improvement. Once the data have been collected, a mass balance is required to provide a consistent set of data from which plant performance can be assessed. Mass balancing is a key skill that many metallurgists and mining industry professionals are familiar with. Mass balancing reconciles the feed and product streams throughout the plant and is sometimes used for accounting of the material entering and leaving a system (eg. JKMetAccount). However more common reasons for mass balancing are: better understanding of the flowrates within a system, assessing the quality of data obtained from sampling and surveys, and providing a key dataset for assessing and improving the performance of unit operations. Mass balancing requires practice and experience to determine if the results are reasonable. There are various software programs available to assist in the mass balancing and understanding of processing plants. This paper is focused on JKMultiBal initially developed by Gay (1993), and then later commercialized by JKTech. JKMultiBal in its current release is for balancing data in both one and two dimensions, i.e. balancing data on either sized or assay bases as well as size-by-assay. With the recent trend in flotation circuits becoming more complex, JKMultiBal has been used to gain a better understanding of the processes occurring within the circuit. This paper provides a description of the program as well as several case studies where the two-dimensional mass balancing has resulted in improvements in plant performance.

The year 1867 marks the first year of commercial production of phosphate rock in the United States. South Carolina produced almost all of the domestic output of mineral phosphate until phosphate mining began in Florida in 1888. During the period 1868 to 1949 the total marketed production of domestic phosphate rock was about 186 million long tons of which 71.5 percent was produced in Florida, 18 percent in Tennessee and 7 percent in South Carolina (1). From 1949 through 1960, Florida phosphate rock production has ranged Prom 71 to 77 percent of the total domestic production. Since three-fourths of the domestic phosphate production is from the Florida field, and since most of the phosphate from the Tennessee and Western fields is not processed, but used directly as electric furnace burden, this paper will concern itself almost entirely with water requirements for mining and processing ore from Florida. Figure 1 summarizes phosphate rock production for Florida vs. total United States production over the period 1947-1960.

Nuclear power currently produces about 20% of the electricity in the US, with 104 nuclear power plants located in 31 states. The commercial US nuclear industry contributes over $4 billion annually to US workers in salaries and wages. 25,000 new jobs need to be filled in the next 5 years. There are over 30 new power plants under consideration by US utilities. The operating reactors use uranium oxide fuel enriched to about 4% U235 and fission is the process used to generate heat to form steam to drive the turbine generators. Nuclear energy is an important element in the US generation portfolio and represents the largest producer of nearly emission-free electricity. Most, if not all, of the operating plants will secure an extended 20 years of operation or more. The last plant constructed was ordered in 1978. New smaller, modular reactors are under design to provide less expensive, expandable generation options.

The Density Separator is basically a hindered settling classifier with automatic control features that provide steady, sharp classification irrespective of extreme variations in dry tons per hour of feed solids up to the design maximum throughput for the particular material being treated. The size and capacities of commercially available units and operating data comprise the scope of the paper. Applications of the unit for other than classification are proposed, i.e. washing and desliming.

SAG mill throughput is often a bottleneck in increasing metal productivity. Improved size distribution control in the mill feed can be used to increase mill production. This can be accomplished by controlling blast fragmentation as a function of energy input and rock characteristics. Such an approach requires the integration of rock fragmentation and comminution modeling. The optimal mill feed size distribution is determined by adapting a population balance comminution model to a measure of rock hardness or fragility which is also relevant to the rock fragmentation that is achieved by blasting. The relation between the size distribution and fragility of the feed and of the mill's product and the critical size in a SAG mill is examined.

Acrylic polymers have been found to be effective dispersants and stabilizers in a wide variety of mineral processing applications including rheology control in concentrated slurries. This paper will describe these low molecular weight, water-soluble polymeric dispersants and provide a basis for how they function in concentrated slurries based on computer molecular modeling and applications results. Data on homopolymers as well as copolymers of acrylic acid will be presented to demonstrate the optimization of a polymeric dispersant in preparing high solids slurries of inorganic materials such as kaolin, calcium carbonate, lime, and magnesium hydroxide.

Upon completion of the 6,200 m (20,340 lineal ft; lft) North Tunnel drive for the Portland East Side Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Tunnel project in Portland, OR, the slurry tunnel boring machine (TBM) had to be returned from the Port Center shaft at Swan Island to the Opera shaft at the main mining site for the 2,700 m (8,860 lft) South Tunnel drive. At the Port Center shaft, the main 513-t (565-st) TBM and TBM tailshield were hoisted out of the shaft in two pieces using four 200-t (220-st) strand jacks mounted on a 635-t (700-st) hydraulic boom gantry system supported by Emmert International?s custom gantry tracks designed to span the shaft. After lifting the TBM components out of the shaft, the gantry system loaded the TBM components onto two Goldhofer platform trailers, which then transported the TBM and tailshield to a barge using a roll-on/roll-off method.

This paper discusses the Helical Drag Bit (HDB) and its rock drilling applications with an emphasis on use in mining operations. The HDB is a drilling tool that employs cutting members arranged in a pattern to form a helical groove or thread within a borehole. This pattern of cutters can be used for several purposes including roof bolting in mining, interpretation of the lithology of the strata being drilled and low energy consumption drilling. Laboratory and field experiments have consistently shown increase of roof bolt-anchoring capacities in weak rock of more than 100% using the short encapsulation pull test method when boreholes are conditioned using the HDB. In 2004 a series of tests conducted in mines with weak roofs demonstrated the benefits of HDB technology for roof bolting applications in mining. HDB technology offers opportunities for new and beneficial approaches to interpret the geology of roof strata. During conventional drilling, traditional approaches to determine rock properties require simultaneous measurement of several parameters such as thrust, rotational velocity, torque and penetration rate. The unique geometry of the HDB possesses a characteristic that allows determination of the mechanical properties of the rock being drilled by measuring torque as a single drilling parameter. This capability greatly simplifies the process of determining rock properties and provides reliable results. Additionally, HDB technology has been demonstrated to offer significant advantages for rock drilling. A substantial portion of the rock is removed by the fracturing of the internal thread created in the rock bore by the tool taking advantage of the weakness of the rock in tension. Because the rock chips obtained in this process are relatively large, savings in energy are realized when compared to traditional drilling technologies.

All parameters influencing the decision for selection of a suitable extraction method were first selected as the base of this study. Then these parameters were categorized in two main groups. The first group of the parameters includes ?geomechanical and inherent characteristics of the dimension stones? such as hardness, RQD, compressive strength, joints plane orientation and spacing, and water content. The second group was named ?technical and economical parameters associated with the investor?s objectives? like for example extraction capacity (production rate), blocks recovery, mechanization, capital investment and operational costs. Finally, the influences of all mentioned parameters on the selection of the most applicable extraction methods have been assessed and discussed.

While the COVID-19 pandemic has dominated the headlines, another epidemic in the United States has continued apace — the opioid epidemic. Half a million opioid overdose deaths have occurred in the United States since 1999, when the opioid epidemic began. The causes of the epidemic include the rise in prescriptions for opioid pain medications, including for work-related pain. Miners and other occupations identified as physically demanding and at higher injury risk have been found to be at increased risk for opioid overdose [1]. However, awareness of the risk factors that might lead to opioid use, the potential hazards associated with their use, and resources to prevent addiction and death can allow miners to make choices that can reduce these risks.

Amax Coal Industries Inc.'s Delta Mine is a medium-sized. high-sulfur coal producer that has lived up to the challenges posed by nearly six decades of a highly competitive domestic coal market. The mine now faces one of its biggest challenges - the same one staring at the dozens of other high-sulfur producers in the Midwest - the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. The 59-year-old mine, located in the coal fields of southern Illinois, has remained one of the state's oldest continuously operating mines by rolling with the ups and downs of the coal market and by incorporating new technologies and innovative productivity improvements into its operation.

Using a fuzzy logic controller, a signal applied on the processes may be generated through a linguistic protocol expressing an operator's intuitive control strategies. In this work, fuzzy logic controller and PID controller imposed upon the feedback liquid level control systems for a stirred tank are studied and compared. The construction factors including the shape of membership functions, number of fuzzy variables, number of inputs, number of rules, and different defuzzification methods are considered in design and formulating the fuzzy logic control strategies and algorithms. From the analysis of the strategies and control performances, an optimum controller may be generated by making use of the best combination of these fuzzy construction factors.

Mineral exploration is a sequential information gathering process. Primary exploration programs filter favorable areas through a series of geological, geochemical, and geophysical tests resulting in the discovery of mineral occurrences. The most favorable of these discoveries provides economic justification for a delineation drilling program. The purpose of delineation drilling is to provide information for estimating relevant physical characteristics of the mineral occurrence. These estimates are used to evaluate the exploration project and, eventually, the economics of mine development. Delineation drilling normally completes the exploration process. If the assessed economic characteristics of the delineated occurrence provide justification for mine development and production, an economic mineral deposit is the end result of the exploration process. Subsequently, a development drilling program is initiated to obtain the necessary data for detailed mine planning. The delineation drilling stage is in itself a sequential investment process. As delineation information accumulates, the reliability of geological estimates is improved and, thus, the uncertainty associated with the assessment of profitability criteria is reduced. Delineation drilling should continue as long as the marginal benefits, which result from improving the reliability of profitability criteria, exceed the marginal costs associated with the additional drilling.

Whether drilling through tough clay or breaking rock, or facing the most severe conditions including mixed face ground, perched water and running and flowing sands, working under-ground certainly comes with no shortage of challenges. In an environment where the unknown is faced on a daily basis, tunneling contractors must be able to rely on their equipment to get the job done properly. Not only that, their equipment must comply with two of the highest priorities: safety and efficiency. In addition to being the number one concern, a proven safety record provides additional benefits to a company. A safe work environment serves as a key component to company growth, including the ability to remain competitive in bidding and maintaining higher-level, more challenging projects.

This paper describes," the application, of a modular or building block approach to the analysis, design, and control of complex mineral treating processes. The main purpose of the paper is tutorial, to show the reader how such processes can be modeled using a modern digital computer" and, not to discuss in any detail the results that may be achieved in such studies. It is proposed that, the main techniques be illustrated by reference mainly to the Bayer process for alumina extraction and purification; in cooperation with the Aluminum Company of Canada Ltd. the author and his Colleagues at McMaster University and their students have studied this, process as a means of applying new computer techniques to extractive metallurgical processes. The plant described was studied by the author and his colleagues as a senior undergraduate project in cooperation with the Aluminum Company of Canada. It is one of several studies that have been carried out with Canadian industry. (1)

A process for producing reductive bleach in-situ in kaolin slurries has been developed. The bleach is formed by mixing an iron sponge powder (-325M) with slurry treated with SO2. The process has been successfully demonstrated in production, and applied to several grades. The color, brightness, and viscosity of the bleached product is equivalent to or better than that of product bleached with commercial sodium hydrosulfite . The tested products can be bleached at a cost, which is 38-54% of those associated with the use of commercial bleach.

The Colorado Geological Survey completed an inventory of environmental degradation associated with abandoned and inactive mines on National Forest System lands in Colorado. In the course of the inventory, areas with naturally occurring acid rock drainage were also noted. Approximately 18,000 abandoned mine- related features were inventoried, including about 900 features that are considered significant enough environmental problems to warrant further investigation. Water quality data, such as pH and conductivity were gathered at all features where water was present, such as draining adits, seepage at the toe of dumps and tailings, and standing water in shafts. Samples were taken where field tests indicated low pH andlor high conductivity, including several areas with naturally occurring acid rock drainage. Samples were analyzed for dissolved and total metals, and for selected anions. All mine locations and data collected by the field geologists were entered on field forms and, subsequently, into a computer database and GIS format. With the information provided by the inventory, the Forest Service, in cooperation with other agencies, has been able to prioritize abandoned mines for reclamation. In most cases, cleanup is approached on a watershed basis. Mines in priority watersheds have been selected for reclamation first. Watersheds where studies prerequisite to cleanup are occurring include the upper Anirnas River, Willow Creek (tributary to the upper Rio Grande), Chalk Creek (tributary to the upper Arkansas River), the Uncompahgre River, and the Alamosa River. During the inventory, evidence of naturally occurring water quality degradation was found in areas where little or no evidence of mining activity exists. These areas include the upper Alamosa River, the Middle Fork of Mineral Creek, Peekaboo Gulch, and Handcart Gulch. Water from these natural sources has been found to significantly exceed Colorado water quality standards for several metals.
