Mine planners are challenged to hold two seemingly opposing objectives: maximizing the mine?s operational efficiency while minimizing post-closure impacts. One of the most effective approaches to meet these objectives is to plan for mine closure from the start. Mine closure is typically viewed as the process that happens in the period of time when the operational stage of a mine is ending and the final decommissioning and mine rehabilitation is being undertaken. In reality, it is a continuous series of activities that begins with preplanning prior to the project?s design and construction and ends when long-term site stability is achieved and a self-sustaining ecosystem is established. Putting this model into practice as early as possible can significantly reduce the financial burden of mine closure and rehabilitation.

Coal production in the United States in 2008 reached a record level of 1.06 Gt (1,171.5 million st), according to preliminary data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) (Table 1). This is an increase of 2.2 percent, or 22.5 Mt (24.8 million st) above the 2007 level and 7.9 Mt (8.7 million st) above the prior record level set in 2006. Although coal production was higher in 2008, U.S. total coal consumption decreased in all sectors for the year. Coal consumption in the electric power sector in 2008 was lower by 0.3 percent, while coking coal consumption decreased by 2.8 percent and the other industrial sector declined by 3.7 percent. The commercial and institutional sector, that had been called the ?residential and commercial? sector prior to 2008, declined by 0.6 percent in 2008. It is the smallest of all the coal-consuming sectors. (Note: All percent-age change calculations are done at the short-tons level.) U.S. coal exports were significantly higher in 2008, while coal imports decreased during the year. Total coal stocks increased in 2008, as some consumers added to their stockpiles. The coal synfuel industry, which grew throughout most of this decade, disappeared from the scene due to the expiration of the available federal tax credits at the end of 2007. The decline in coal consumption during the year was the consequence of slowing domestic economic growth, particularly in the latter half of the year, combined with the weather conditions in 2008, resulting in lower demand for electricity. Preliminary data show that total generation in the electric power sector (electric utilities and independent power producers, including useful thermal output) in the U.S. decreased in 2008. Coal-based generation also decreased, resulting in a 3.2-Mt (3.5-mil-lion st) drop in coal consumed in the electric power sec-tor. M.S. Azun I have many objections to the content of the author's paper. Before discussing it, however, I would like to repeat the property of semivariogram function. Second order stationary properties of regionalized variables (ReV's) such as semivariogram function y(h) are perfectly known in geostatistics. Also, the kriging equations in the language of mathematical statistics using second order stationary properties are well understood. However, the way to use the sample (estimated) semivariogram function in any one of the kriging procedures is vague. The sample semivariogram function is given as follows: [ ] where N is the total number of samples, Xi is the sample value at the i - th location, Xi+h is the sample value at the i + h - th location, and h is the distance among the samples. An estimation variance of sample semivariogram function of first lag is smaller than that of higher order lag. The theoretical semivariogram function reaches the variance of samples asymptotically. But this is not easily observable because of the larger variation involved in the estimate of semivariogram function. In general, an estimation procedure is done for h = 0, 1, 2, up to the greatest integer less than N/2, even though sample semivariogram function can be computable through N-1. After estimating semivariogram function, the critical question of how to model sample semivariogram function arises. As seen in the above equation, sample semivariogram function is discrete and can be smoothed by the model being selected. Therefore, modeling of sample semivariogram function is the most important step in geostatistics. It not only smoothes a discrete function but also affects the results of the kriging procedure. When the only aim is to model the semivariogram function, which is the basic point of the author's paper, one can employ any fitting techniques, such as curve fitting, or any arbitrary functions, which are called submodels in the paper. The term "arbitrary function" is used rather than "submodel" because there is no basic understanding of developing them. The author suggests that the sum of those submodels can also be used for the modeling of sample semivariogram function. The combination of any arbitrary functions brings many problems instead of giving an insight of the domain structure considered. The author used two arbitrary functions and the nugget effect in response to sample semivariogram function (Fig. 10). For the same example, he stated that the parameters involved in the mixed arbitrary function model can be accepted when the discrepancy between sample semivariogram function and the model is small visually. For verifying the fitting behavior of any selected model, one should not be contented with the visual satisfactory. Some statistical measure such as goodness of fit has to be used. The author's practice is no more than an exercise in curve fitting without any fundamental understanding or conceptualization of the underlying physical mechanism. Furthermore, the selection of any model is not an easy task if the purpose is the search for the "best" response to the observed second order properties of ReV's. I suggest that the Markovian model (Azun, 1983), on the basis of a theoretical understanding of underlying mechanism, which gives more information about the occurrence of regionalized variables, is used to respond all properties of ReV's. There are a lot of problems for modeling of one-dimensional sample semivariogram function. Thus, it is not appropriate to go to higher order dimensional sample semivariogram function modeling. In the meantime, I would recommend that one can connect the values of standardized sample semivariogram function rather than simple values of semivariogram function in the two-dimensional estimation. The standardized values can be computed in dividing the semivariogram function value by the number of sample pairs involved in each lag regardless of the directions. In conclusion, geostatistics is an interdisciplinary area in mining that uses the principles of mathematical statistics. Thus, it should not violate any probabilistic and statistical rules. When Matheron was developing the theory of geostatistical study in the early years of geostatistics, many mining people had a reservation accepting the geostatistical tools. However, this does not mean that we, the geostatisticians, might try to convince those people using some "strange" tools or rules as some authors implied (Baafi and Kim, 1984). Instead, we have to develop and explain the geostatistical tools staying only in the framework of statistical concepts and properties. Rendu The interactive method proposed by Rendu allows practitioners to develop semivariogram models that take into account not only the numerical information obtained by sampling, but also highly significant additional information that often cannot be quantified. The geology of the deposit - including hypotheses concerning its genesis, sampling methods, assaying methods, and mathematical methods used to calculate the semivariograms - all have an influence on the numerical results obtained and on how these results should be interpreted. If all the information concerning the spatial distribution of values in a mineral deposit was contained in the sample values, it could be argued that statistical techniques alone would produce optimum models. However, this is rarely, if ever, the case. Methods that allow the user to take into account his experience and his geologic understanding of the deposit should not be rejected for the sake of theoretical statistical purity.

"Shallow-depth (<200m) high temperature submarine hydrothermal systems are not commonly observed on mid-ocean ridge settings, as most known systems are located within arc - island-arc volcanic settings, often proximal to coastal areas (meteoric waters added). In 2013, during the Centre for Geobiology’s 2013 oceanographic cruise (R/V G.O. Sars), a dredge successfully sampled massive sulfides and hydrothermally altered rocks from the top of a volcanic edifice (~144-284 m depth) located on the northern sector of the Kolbeinsey Ridge. Dredged samples include vesicular altered basalts, and matrix supported anhydrite, barite and barite-pyrite-anhydrite volcaniclastic breccias. Sulfidesulfate breccias depict complex zoning where numerous small vent orifices are distributed with large blades of marcasite that appear intergrown with barite. Native sulfur was observed in one of these small vent orifices. On a microscopic scale, numerous spherical silica-rich structures appear associated to these breccias. These rocks are evidence for the presence of a relatively high temperature (minimum 150ºC) shallow-water seafloor hydrothermal system in the Arctic mid-ocean ridge, far from mainland influence. This new discovery presents a unique opportunity to study the dynamics of fluid chemistry, metal mobility and precipitation in shallow hydrothermal systems. The remote location of this system dictates that fluid recharge will be influenced solely by seawater and magmatic fluids, In July-August 2014 we expect to survey this new field and acquire new and comprehensive data."

The Australian longwall mining industry spends millions of dollars per year on proactive and reactive ground consolidation applications across most of the operations currently in production. The design and effectiveness of the applications and products vary widely and are based predominantly on-site precedence or what were considered successful applications at other sites in similar situations. In the continual improve the effectiveness of how consolidation products are used and when by enhancing our knowledge of the mechanical properties of products used in underground coal applications and applying this increased understanding to geotechnical design. One of the current challenges to further developing more appropriate and accurate geotechnical design methods for consolidation activities is the lack of standardised materials testing and knowledge of rock mechanics data on in situ performance. The lack of industry standardisadesign of consolidation programs, with a reliance on experience-based guidance for rockmass consolidation design. consolidation products. The program was designed to provide the industry with a set of geomechanical property index tests and a data set that can be utilised by rock mechanics engineers as baseline information for product evaluation and engineering design. The laboratory work undertaken is critical to understanding the exact small-scale mechanical properties of these products and testing was carried out at Monash University for various states of curing of each product. Recognising that the speed at which a mixed product develops its desired properties to act as a support element in underground coal mines is critical to its serviceability. This paper presents the testing rationale proposed, the testing results, and a framework for how the data set can be used to improve the engineering basis for ground consolidation design, in terms of expected rockmass performance under various mining conditions and application parameters.

This paper presents the modern techniques of limestone sawing and quarrying developed and adopted by Indiana Limestone Company, Inc.(ILCI).To fulfill the growing market demands, ILCI’s quarries are committed to deliver planned quantities of all type of stone blocks in a variety of different colors, sizes, and textures. This involves scheduling which quarry ledges should be mined and when in order to minimize unnecessary inventory buildup. Challenges associated with ILCI’s operation are discussed and summarized in the closing of this paper.

Experimentation was performed on the flotation of apatite and dolomite separately using anionic collectors in the presence of Mycobacterium phlei. Also, the flotation of mixtures of dolomite and apatite in the presence of anionic collectors and in the absence and presence of the bacterium were studied. It was found that M.phlei functions as a depressant for both minerals. However, it functions as a better depressant for dolomite than for apatite. Experimentation was extended to two different Florida dolomitic phosphate rocks. In this investigation a concentrate grade of less than 1.0% MgO was achieved.

NIOSH and the Illinois Clean Coal Institute are funding studies on characterization of coal and quartz dust in Interior Basin mines since 2009. Coal dust characteristics vary significantly and, are vital for the development of the engineering controls. This paper presents wettability characteristics of coal dust with respect to its chemical and physical properties, since wettability is considered to be a primary dust control technique. Particle size distribution, inter-particle interactions during wetting and quartz associations with organic and inorganic matter in coal seams is critical for understanding wetting phenomena. Silica content in the un-wetted fractions was found to be very high during wetting tests. Wetting of quartz may be limited by its association to hydrophobic materials as well as buoyancy forces resulting from particle size characteristics and particle-particle interaction in the wetting agent. Temperature of the wetting solution and effective contact time between dust particles and water droplets are found to be two important variables affecting the wettability. The characterization data obtained from this study can be utilized to develop engineering controls.

"INTRODUCTION Santiago de Chile is a 7 million inhabitant city which has a 103 Km long subway network operated since 1975 by Metro S.A. This network is used on a daily basis by 2.3 million people. In 2012 Metro S.A. started the biggest enlargement of the network in its history, through the design and construction of the new Line 3 (21.7 Km) and Line 6 (16.5 Km). The detailed engineering contract for civil underground works of Line 6 (L6) was awarded to the Consortium integrated by ZAÑARTU Ingenieros Consultores and GEOCONTROL S.A., in which Geocontrol was in charge of the design of 11 stations and 14.5 Km of tunnel. L6 crosses L3 in Ñuble and Ñuñoa Station, L2 at Franklin Station and ends, intersecting L1, at Los Leones Station as shown in Figure 1. LOS LEONES STATION DESIGN Location and Characteristics Los Leones Station is placed at the North end of the L6, next to the same named station of the L1 and it has four construction units, as is shown in Figure 2: I. Access Shaft (49 m x 47 m). II. Access Gallery (34 m long). III. Station Tunnel (120 m long). IV. Connection Gallery with L1 (104 m long). A singular feature of Los Leones is that the western section of the station tunnel, built from the access gallery, is located below an underground parking lot which is located in Providencia Avenue, as shown in Figure 3. It is important to highlight that the distance between the vault of Los Leones Station Tunnel and the foundations of the underground parking lot is only 6 m."

At present the feasibility of developing underground facilities for the storage of a number of products including toxic waste, oil, nuclear waste and low pressure gas is under investigation in e number of countries. A possible method of storage is in large excavations, Preliminary ventilation design work has identified that the climatic conditions encountered within these large excavations are a limiting ventilation pollutant within the ventilation system. This paper examines the design of a variety of sizes of excavation from a ventilation viewpoint. The main phases of an excavations lifetime can be divided into four main phases, these being construction, civil and mechanical fitting, storage, full and sealed. The paper details ventilation design options for the first two phases of e vaults lifetime, giving climatic simulations to assess the likely climatic conditions within the excavations for e number of facility depths. The options for climatic control are given and analyzed by means of climatic simulations techniques. l. INTRODUCTION The feasibility of developing underground facilities for the storage of a number of products is under investigation at present in a number of countries. This paper details a possible design for such a facility where the product is to be stored in large underground excavations. A facility layout has been designed with the aim of allowing concurrent construction and storage operations. Thus from a ventilation perspective the facility consists of two circuits , a construction ventilation circuit and a product ventilation circuit both of which are served by an intake and a return surface connection The construction and storage circuits are considered as independent of each other , any interaction in the form of leakage must be from the construction to the storage circuit. From the facility design a ventilation network was developed to assess the ventilation requirements of the facility. In analyzing the pollutant loads for the construction circuit two pollutants were recognised to be critical to the ventilation design , these being diesel exhaust fumes and heat end humidity. In this paper ventilation design options for the construction and civil and mechanical fitting phases of the excavations are analyzed by means of climatic simulation and options for climatic control within the vaults are outlined . 2. FACILITY DESIGN A schematic diagram of a facility design is illustrated in Figure 1. There would be two distinct ventilation circuits , one to service the construction operations and the second to serve the storage operations which occur concurrently with construction , the circuits are separated by ventilation bulkheads . Access to the facility for intake air is provided by two drifts, one to serve each circuit. Two shafts act as returns to surface. The facility consists of two distinct zones for the storage of two types of product. One type is to be stored in smell linear excavations. The second zone is for the storage of a second product in larger excavations. The maximum cross-sectional area and perimeter for the smell linear excavations are 456.25 m2 and 83.2 m, while for the larger excavations they are 440.1 m2 and 86.4 m. Excavation construction consists of three phases: 1. Initial pilot tunnel development between main intake and return to provide through flow ventilation. 2. Enlargement to produce the required finished cross-section. 3. Civil and mechanical engineering work to fit out the excavation ready for storage. It is proposed to excavate the excavations using drill and blest methods utilising diesel equipment. Spoil is to be transported to surface by a conveyor belt system. At any one time the maximum number of working places requiring ventilation will consist of ; 3 storage sites, 2 excavations under construction, 2 excavations undergoing civil and mechanical fitting. The role of growth conditions and adhesion of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans on the leaching of chalcopyrite was investigated. Thiobacillus ferrooxidans grown on sulfur, thiosulfate and ferrous ion substrates was used in this comparative study. Growth on sulfur, a solid substrate, requires bacterial adhesion unlike that required in the presence of soluble thiosulfate and ferrous ion in a mineral-salts medium. Solid substrate-grown cells showed higher rates of leaching than those grown in liquid media. An initial lag period noticed during leaching by solution-grown cells was absent when solid substrate-grown cells were used. Such a behavior is attributed to the presence of an inducible proteinaceous cell-surface appendage on the sulfur-grown cells. This appendage aids in bacterial adhesion onto the mineral surfaces. Such an appendage is absent in solution-grown cells, as substantiated by electrophoretic measurements. The importance of bacterial adhesion and the direct mechanism in leaching by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans are demonstrated.

A new analytical approach for characterizing and improving the performance of ball milling is presented. Individual ball mill circuit design and operating variables can be related to overall circuit performance through two distinct parameters for classification and breakage. The ball mill circuit functional performance equation is presented. Applications in the industrial plant and in the research field are discussed.

To improve coal flotation Bethlehem Steel Corporation&apos;s Research Department has been working on a number of related problems based on both physical and chemical factors. The ideal is of course full understanding of the interrelated effects of both sets of factors. However, detailed studies5 of each physical factor have produced immediately usable results in commercial coal flotation and are providing the bas is for our current work on the effect of chemical factors. Since these detailed studies provided the basis for the present investigation of froth sprinkling, their key results are highlighted here. For example, for a highly floatable bituminous coal, particle floatability was shown to be directly related to the percentage of coal surface available for bubble attachment and inversely related to particle mass. The data also underscored that in a given size range the addition of mineral matter to a particle makes flotation more difficult both by adding to the mass of the particle and by decreasing the amount of coal surface available for bubble attachment. Size also affects particle floatability in that as the size of particles of a given specific gravity increases, mass increases and the ratio between coal surface area and mass of the particle decreases. Flotation tests showed that any recovery of the coarsest particles in a coal feed is accompanied by progressively higher recovery of finer and finer particles. Consequently, fine high-specific-gravity particles are recovered with the coarse good coal. As a result, when the entire 14M x 0 size range is processed by froth flotation, the good coarse coal is contaminated with high-specific-gravity fines. It is the small quantities of these fines that must be rejected from the froth product if flotation efficiency is to be increased above its present level.

Tunneling in carbonate sedimentary rocks such as lime stones and dolomites can be difficult when solution channels or voids are anticipated. Addressing the risk aspects associated with these formations can be done effectively through the Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) by properly characterizing the ground and ensuring that the Owner?s and the Contractor?s interests are represented and protected. This paper presents a review of tunneling difficulties in these rocks and includes a review of site investigations, geologic characterization, and presentation in the GBR. Key construction issues are also discussed, including appropriate excavation technology, mechanisms of face support and groundwater control, and quantifying grout takes.

As the techniques and resolution for 3-D spatial analysis have advanced in the last decade, it is now possible to map in detail the microstructure of multiphase materials in three-dimensional digital space. In this regard, three-dimensional x-ray microtomography offers a unique imaging capability. Spatial resolution on the order of ten microns can be achieved with the use of microfocus x-ray generators. Recently, a state-of-the-art cone beam x-ray microtomography system has been installed at the University of Utah for the quantitative analysis of multiphase materials in three dimensions. This facility has been designed to obtain 2048 x 2048 pixel reconstruction over a 10-mm diameter, while also allowing for the imaging of somewhat larger (40-mm) objects. The system is capable of handling high-density materials, even materials having a density as high as 8.0 g/cm3. This unique, one-of-a-kind, instrument will be used to obtain three-dimensional spatial reconstruction for such applications as specific examples 3D liberation analysis, pore structure analysis of particle beds during filtration and air-void system of concrete structures. The utilization of x-ray microtomography not only will allow for quantitative analysis of multiphase systems but also allow for textural characterization and the determination of phase continuity. In this paper, we present information regarding the current use of this new facility and reviewed potential applications for the advanced analytical system.

A study of coal pillar strength at the Beehive Mine in central Utah was done in the 1970s. This study was a cooperative effort by the University of Utah, RE/SPEC, Inc., and the American Coal Company and was funded by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. Mine measurements of closure at 117 points and pillar stress using 119 vibrating wire stress gauges were made during retreat mining in this room-and-pillar operation. Laboratory testing for the strength and modulus of 372 coal cylinders up 0.3 m (1 ft) in diameter and 0.6 m (2 ft) in length was also done. Two-dimensional finite element model analyses complemented the study. However, the real world of mining is three-dimensional and in consideration of the significant advances in computing power since the time of the original study, a revisit of the data seemed warranted. In this regard, a novel finite element method was used that allows for the whole-mine analysis of tabular excavations on the kilometer scale and yet enables details to be obtained at pillar walls on the meter scale. The effects of material properties variability in situ and of joints can also be taken into account. Results that compare computed two- and three-dimensional seam-level closures with mine measurements show noticeable differences; three-dimensional results are reasonable, while two-dimensional results overestimate closure by nearly a factor of two.

To better understand the load shedding and the stress transfer on coal pillars due to room-and- pillar retreat mining in deep cover panels, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a monitoring field study. Two sites, at overburden depths of 1,000 ft (304.8 m) and 1,500 ft (457.3 m), were selected in a room-and-pillar mine operating in Southern West Virginia. The deformation and stress changes in the roof and two adjacent pillars at each site were monitored during the retreat mining process. The monitoring results and field observations were used to calibrate large-scale FLAC3D models for each site. The calibrated models were used to assess different sizes of roof bolts installed in deep cover areas. INTRODUCTION Deep cover room-and-pillar retreat mining is an important emerging issue that will intensify in the future as shallower reserves are depleted (Mark, 2009; Chase et al., 2002). During pillar retreat mining, the likelihood of local and/or global instabilities increases due to elevated stress levels near the pillar line because of the abutment loading. In the last decade, approximately 31% of the room-and-pillar mining groundfall fatalities in the United States occurred during pillar retreat mining. Between 2013 and 2017, this proportion increased to 55%, of which 50% of these fatalities were due to falls of roof and rib that occurred during pillar recovery (MSHA, 2018). One interesting piece of information about pillar recovery fatalities was that the victim was nearly always under bolted roof. Sheared and broken #5 (5/8-in), fully grouted rebar bolt failure contributed to three of four fatal roof fall incidents that have occurred in deep cover retreat mines (NIOSH, 2010). This claim raised the following question at the study mine: Is it safe to use a 4-ft long #5 (5/8-in) rebar bolt grade 60 at a depth of cover more than 1,000 ft (304.8 m)? There was some concern about shear failure of the #5 (5/8-in) rebar bolt at a depth of cover over 1,000 ft (304.8 m). To answer the question and to reduce accidents and fatalities caused by ground falls due to room-and-pillar retreat mining in deep cover panels, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) monitored the roof and rib deformation and the change in vertical pressure within two adjacent pillars during pillar recovery. The study was conducted at two deep cover sites in a room-and-pillar mine located in Southern West Virginia that operates in the Lower War Eagle (LWE) seam. The monitored sites were selected at 1,000 ft (304.8 m) and 1,500 ft (457.3 m) depths of cover. In this paper, site-1 represents the monitored site at 1,000 ft (304.8 m) of cover, while site-2 represents the monitored site at 1,500 ft (457.3 m) of cover. For this study, large-scale FLAC3D numerical models were calibrated based on both field observations and instrumentation results. The calibrated models were then used to compare the ground response and the induced stresses of two pillars at instrumented sites 1 and 2. The maximum lateral displacement (roof shift) obtained from the calibrated large-scale FLAC3D models was applied to a small-scale FLAC3D bolted models, the safety factor for axial stresses of the simulated roof bolts was calculated at the deep cover sites.

"The immediate ring closure method, in which the entire periphery of the excavation area is closed immediately with an initial support within a short distance from the excavation face, has been increasingly used in Japan, especially, as one of the most effective countermeasures against difficult ground conditions in conventional tunneling. For reasonable design of this method, the performance requirements for the initial support should be clearly stated. The analysis of construction data of 30 road tunnels and the three-dimensional numerical modeling based on real data suggest that the immediate ring closure stabilizes the tunnel structure and the ground around it because of the inner pressure effect of the initial support, especially, for low ground competence factor and small internal friction angle. Finally, the bending compressive strength and the cross-sectional geometry of the initial support have to be considered in the tunnel design while considering the earth pressure and ground properties. Historical mining operations in Colorado and other western states have resulted in thousands of remnant mine openings. Many are sources of metals loading and acid water generation in surface and ground waters. It is estimated that more than 965 km (600 miles) of streams in Colorado have been impacted by past mining activities. The Animas River watershed in southwestern Colorado is one of the most heavily affected areas in the state. Abandoned mine features pose significant safety hazards to those who enter them. These hazards can include bad air, unstable rock or falls into open shafts, stopes and winzes. Backcountry skiers and snowmobile enthusiasts are particularly vulnerable to falls into snow covered mine openings.
