This summary of international mineral exploration activities for 2006 draws upon avail-able information from literature, industry and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents analysis of the mineral industry based upon these data. Two types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review. They include budgetary statistics provided by Metals Economics Group (MEG) of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and information on regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2006 compiled by the USGS.

A series of performance studies have been conducted using counter-current column flotation to recover a marketable clean coal product from existing preparation plant fine waste streams. The test work was conducted at several preparation plant sites in Kentucky and Virginia and utilized a 0.15m (6 in.) I.D. column that was 5.79m (19 ft.) high. The refuse streams tested included both thickener feed and classifying cyclone overflow with a typical size distribution of 100 mesh X O. The percent solids of the column flotation feed varied from 1.5 to 15% while the ash content ranged from 30-60%. The concentrates produced contained 2-10% ash with BTU recoveries of nearly 90% using 0.12-1.25 kg/ton (0.25-2.5 lbs/ton) fuel oil and 0.12 kg/ton (0.25 lb/ton) MIBC. These results were consistent with or better than results obtained in preliminary laboratory scale column flotation evaluation. Test results from 7 different seams are discussed as well as scale-up relationships utilized to design a full scale installation presently in operation.

Mica mining in the United States is confined largely to pegmatites and schists in a few well-defined areas. The largest region extends from central Virginia southward through western North and South Carolina, northern Georgia, and east-central Alabama. 1, 2, 3 Whereas in western North Carolina these pegmatite dikes are weathered to only a shallow depth, they are deeply weathered in the Carolina Piedmont and in Georgia and Alabama. Particularly in Georgia and Alabama, mica is found in the decomposed slates and schists adjacent to the pegmatites, and in deeply weathered granites. Most flake mica is obtained as the major marketable product by crushing and milling pegmatites.4 To a lesser extent, mica is produced as a byproduct of feldspars and spodumene.6 Past research by the Bureau of Mines has developed two methods for mica flotation. One method utilizes acid-cationic flotation for recovery of mica." This method requires thorough desliming of the ore with consequent fine mica losses. The other method utilizes an alkaline-anionic-cationic process for recovering fine size mica from pegmatite ores after desliming sufficiently to remove clay materials but not so drastically as to remove the fine mica. 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 The latter process has also been successfully applied to a micaceous schist ore from California.14 This report summarizes the results of these research studies. Both of the flotation processes developed by the Bureau of Mines have been adopted by the mica industry and are being commercially utilized separately and in combination for flotation of mica from weathered pegmatite ores.

Limited research has been conducted related to the development of mathematical optimization models for production scheduling at large surface coal mines using the area, i.e., strip, mining method. Increased economic and technical challenges have led to a new interest in production schedule optimization models for these type of mining operations like those currently applied to model underground and open pit mines. While area mines share similar characteristics to both open pit and underground metal operations, neither an open pit nor underground production scheduling model adequately depicts an area mine mathematically. We present an integer programming model with blending constraints and discuss the challenges and opportunities related to the implementation for area mines as well as future research in area mine production scheduling.

Longwall mining is considered to be the most efficient underground coal-mining technique in terms of coal extraction ratio, production rate and safety standards. Due to the increasing demand for higher coal production, the recent trends have been to use wider panels and to maintain a faster face movement. For these reasons, longwall mining can result in unexpected roof falls, excessive face convergence, shield damage and numerous maintenance problems, which can cause sudden interruption of coal production as well as serious safety hazards. Recent work at the University of Alabama has been dedicated to the development of a longwall strata-control and maintenance system that can integrate real-time shield monitoring, data presentation, analysis, forecasting and warning modules. This integrated system has been called LoSCoMS. The main objective of the system is to provide minute-by-minute stability and maintenance information such as the following: high-load, low-setting pressure, leg leakage, etc.; the analysis of various mining and geological parameters to determine past and present roof characteristics; and the forecasting of loading patterns for the following mining cycles, the next periodic weighting, etc. By using this unique system, mine operations personnel are well aware of past, present and future roof-loading patterns at the longwall face and, thus, proper safety measures can be taken ahead of time.

The development of the mineral industry of Jamaica has been guided by an unwritten policy which has nevertheless been reflected in various pieces of mining legislation and by case-by-case approvals of incentive packages for non-bauxite minerals. An effort has now been made to bring together in one minerals policy document, all the policy elements that have guided our laws and actions thus far and to upgrade the final version to meet the challenges of the next century. In this regard, industrial minerals will be placed on a more equal footing with bauxite, especially in terms of investment incentives.

The demand for phosphate will continue into the future, because phosphate is currently irreplaceable as a plant nutrient and in many chemical applications. Phosphate is not recycled, so the supply must be replenished through a process of mining and purification. The most energy intensive part of the process, separation of phosphate from the ore, requires 54 to 78% (depending on the method used) of the estimated 0.5 quads of energy consumed by the U.S. phosphate industry. This paper provides data from a project designed to determine if a biotechnology can be developed to separate phosphate from its ore. Several hundred microorganisms (both bacteria and fungi) capable of solubilization of phosphate ore have been isolated from the environment. Work is ongoing to determine the mechanism for solubilization. In addition, how these organisms could be used in a bioprocess is being investigated.

The Bureau of Mines has studied the mechanism of shear-flocculation of silica with stearic acid. At pH 6 and 12, shear-flocculation of silica was not observed with up to 10-4M (5 lb/st) stearic acid. However, in the presence of 0.1 M NaCl at pH 6, shear-flocculation was observed at stearic acid concentrations 10-4 M (5 lb/st). Adsorption of stearic acid on silica was studied using stearic acids spin-labelled with a doxyl group. The presence of the spin-labelling group did not greatly affect the shear-flocculation properties of stearic acid. Adsorption of labelled stearic acid on silica was measured as a function of surfactant concentration with electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and gas chromatography (GC). The GC results indicate the stearic acid was predominately adsorbed on the surface at concentrations above 10-4 M. From the EPR spectra, the formation of aggregates of stearic acid was apparent at concentrations of approximately 10-414 (5 lb/st). The results are discussed in terms of a possible mechanism for shear-flocculation.

Concentrate flow rates were measured for the flotation of -100-mesh Lower Kittaning coal in a computer-controlled 0.076 x 3.5-m pilot flotation column. The variables studied were recovery zone height, airflow and solid feed rates. The specific projected surface areas of the feed, concentrate and tailing streams were determined from the measured particle size distributions. The results obtained show that the concen¬trate flow rate was independent of recovery zone height but was dependent on the hydrostatic pressure setting (measure of froth depth), gas flow rate, solid loading and particle size. New correlations for column carrying capacity and yield are provided as a function of bubble surface area flux and the specific particle projected surface area.

The Detroit Upper Rouge Tunnel CSO Control Project will capture and store up to 201 MG of combined sewer overflow from 28 outfalls in Detroit, Dearborn Heights and Redford Township during wet-weather events. The history of rock tunneling in the area is associated with high groundwater inflows, artesian pressure, and hazardous and combustible gases. This paper presents the geotechnical considerations for designing the 11.28-km (7-mile) long, 9.14 m (30-ft) finished diameter tunnel and its associated adits, chambers and shafts, including the discussions of geotechnical investigations, rock mass characterization, estimated groundwater infiltration during construction, and the selections of excavation methods and lining system based on anticipated ground behavior to be encountered.

An atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been applied to study the adsorption of potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) and potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX) on arsenopyrite surface in solutions. AFM images show that the collectors adsorb on arsenopyrite surface in patches at pH 6. Increasing the chemical dosage will increase the adsorption density of the patches on mineral surface. The increased probe-arsenopyrite adhesion measured in PAX solutions at pH 6 is attributed to the adsorption of the patches, suggesting the hydrophobic nature of the patches, which is likely the oily dixanthogen. It is also found that arsenopyrite is reactive in water in the presence of air. At a high pH with the addition of Ca(OH)2 the adsorption of collectors on arsenopyrite is greatly retarded or depressed because the mineral surface is coated by a lot of precipitates, which is hydrophilic in nature as shown by the measured strong repulsive probe-arsenopyrite detachment force. The findings confirm that the flotation behavior of arsenopyrite in xanthate solutions is very similar to that of pyrite.

Grade control models are supposed to provide a higher resolution than long-term or interim models. However, available grids from diamond or reverse circulation drilling do not provide that required resolution. In this study, a geostatistical workflow is proposed to integrate available grade data from production blastholes with its operational parameters taken when drilling downhole. The step of geological logging can be replaced by machine learning models for classifying blastholes into lithologies and hardness classes. Next, indicator and ordinary kriging use the classified blastholes and previous data for estimating the model domains and the grades within each one. The workflow is applied in a world class iron ore mine in Brazil.

A complex soil profile and high water table, together with a below-grade active subway tunnel, an above-ground elevated railway line, and the heavily travelled Northern Boulevard all passing above the tunnel alignment, combined to make mining of New York?s Northern Boulevard Crossing what is widely considered to be the most challenging portion of the multi-billion-dollar East Side Access project. The Northern Boulevard Crossing is a vital link in this project which, when completed, will connect the Long Island Railroad to Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan. How the sequential excavation method (SEM) tunneling was successfully accomplished, despite the obstacles, was a textbook exercise in practical innovation coupled with close cooperation between the owner, the construction manager, Hatch Mott MacDonald, the designer, Parsons Brinckerhoff, the contractor, Schiavone-Kiewit, and spe-cialty geotechnical contractor, Moretrench.

INTRODUCTION The development of nuclear industry in Taiwan requires an increasing supply of uranium. Uranium recovery from phosphate ores, becomes an important item of the R & D programs. Many countries have already started such a program. USA has set up an industrial-scale production plant; South Africa, Israel, Morocco and other countries have also engaged in the development of extraction technology of uranium from phosphate ores and started setting up the production plant. In Taiwan, a feasibility study of establishing the production plant was started in 1977. A pilot plant was completed, tested, and operated in 1979. The main source material. - phosphate ores is obtained from China Phosphate Company. The annual yield of the pilot plant has been planned to be one ton of ammonium diuranate (ADU). The Health Physics Division of Institute of Nuclear Energy Research (INER), Atomic Energy Council of Republic of China (ROC AEC), is responsible for the radiation safety control of the plant. The purpose of the radiation safety control is to collect radiation safety information of the plant of this type, to evaluate possible radiation hazards to the personnel, and to analyze the radiation safety of the immediate environment adjacent to the plant. Furthermore, the information and experience obtained are used as the basis for applying radiation safety control to the production plant. The main emphases of the radiation safety control are therefore the arrangement of radiation safety control areas and the collection and evaluation of the health physics data. This report includes the past one and half years' experiences of the radiation safety control of the pilot plant, the planning of the production plant with an annual yield of 10 ton ADU, and considerations given in improving the radiation safety control of the production plant. PILOT PLANT AND ITS OPERATION PROCESS The pilot plant occupies an area of 350 m2 and is a two-story rectangular building. Exits are provided by a front and a rear door. An additional small door at the central right side of the building is connected to the maintenance area located outside the main building. The interior of the building is divided into interconnected offices, laboratories and process area (Figs. 1 and 2). A stairway to the process area of the second floor is located in the central part of the first floor. The second floor offices are accessible by the additional front and rear stairways. The main process area of the first floor is furnished with plastic floor, and the second floor with poriferous iron-grid floor. The building is not furnished with centralized air-conditioning system. Individual air conditioners are, however, available to some laboratories. Because the back door of the building is frequently open, the product storage room is provided with a blower to maintain good ventilation. Natural uranium contents of phosphoric acid solution vary in the range from 0.07 to 0.11 kg/m3. The process consists mainly of the uranium concentration cycle and the purification cycle. A flow diagram of the process is shown in Fig. 3. CONSIDERATIONS GIVEN FOR RADIATION SAFETY CONTROL AND THE ESTABLISHMENT OF RADIATION CONTROLLED AREAS The radiation safety control of the pilot plant is carried out on the basis of the considerations listed below:1,2 1) Since the wet process is adopted, and the flow of the radioactive material is confined to closed pipes and containers, air contamination is therefore not too much of concern. 2) The concentrations of radioactive material of the whole process are mostly less than 10 ppm. An exception is the final ADU product after precipitation and centrifugal separation, which contains up to 50% natural uranium. The proliferations of media sources and non-profits organizations in Ghana have put the negative impacts of mining on the ?spot?; this has resulted in public outcry about mining. Although, the gold mining industry has responded by implementing several voluntary measures to ensure sustainable mineral development, these critics label such measures as ?green wash?. In this study, a content analysis of newspaper articles of the Ghana Web Database was carried out after the collection of a total of approximately 900 newspaper articles from it. The data were statistically analyzed to chronologically examine the main media view points and the changing perception of mining issues as reported by private and public media. The results showed government, mining industry (Gold), illegal miners and non-profit & community groups as the main media view points and total of twenty-eight related gold mining sustainability issues. The findings of this study could be used by the gold mining companies to improve upon the communications of their unknown sustainable mineral development measures and to design effective communications and education programs for the public.

Let's start with a bit of History. Before the advent of woven wire screen cloth or perforated plate as we know it today, screens or sieves, as they were called, were probably made by the Greeks or Romans around the year 150 B.C. Coarse openings were made from bamboo or other woven reeds or with holes punched in leather hides, while fine openings may have been made using hair from the long tails of horses woven with small openings. The first metallic woven wire screens were probably produced by the Germans in the 15th Century. All of these screening devices were, of course, hand operated. The first records of mechanically driven shaking screens are found in "John Smeathon's Diary of His Journey to the Low-Country" in 1775. He was the English Civil Engineer who built the famous Eddystone Light House and discovered the formula for making hydraulic cements. He described a screen the Dutch were using as a wooden frame on which woven wire was mounted. This box was inclined at an angle and hinged on the lower end. The upper or feed end was equipped with a pulley so they could raise it up, say 5" or 6", and then let it drop abruptly onto a sill or stop plate, thus jarring the material deposited on the woven wire through the openings. Material that was passed over the deck was scooped up and redeposited on the woven wire for rescreening. This was an early form of what is today known as a recirculating load.

Kennecott's Ray Mines Division (RMD) is located in central Arizona. The pit and silicate plants are located at Ray while the 27,500 tpd concentrating facilities are located at Hayden, approximately 20 miles away from the pit. Ore is delivered in 100 ton railroad cars, 60 cars per train via the Copper Basin Railroad. The side discharge cars are dumped into a 6,000 ton trackhopper. There are 6 Nico feeders, two per belt. Three 48" belts transport the -8" ore to three 7' standard (secondary) Nordberg crushers. Each crusher is preceded by a 6' x 12' Tyler double deck screen. The secondary crushers are open circuit. The -1/21t material from the screens is transported directly to the fine ore bin at the mill. The discharge from the crushers and the intermediate product -2 1/411 x +1/2" is conveyed to a surge bin. The tertiary crusher feeder belts discharge onto five 61 x 161 Tyler double deck screens, each followed by a 7' shorthead (tertiary) Nordberg crusher in closed circuit. The -1/2" product joins the -1/2" ore from the secondary crushers and both are conveyed along a 42", 4,230 foot long belt to the fine ore bin that feeds the grinding circuits. When hard ore is experienced at the concentrator the daily throughput decreases by up to 10%. This coupled with the fact that the ore is generally becoming harder with mine depth provided the incentive to improve the performance at the crushing plant.

The success of steep slope (>20°) contour mining depends on many factors. Most important is the selection of the mining method that best suits the premining site conditions environmentally and economically. These conditions can be divided into three categories: • Geometric conditions - machine limitations, slope stability restrictions, erosion capacity; • Physical conditions - material properties, rock strengths, ability to dig, driving surfaces; and • Chemical conditions - acid-base relationships, blending or selective placement of overburden. This article incorporates these conditions by conceptually modeling compliance-oriented contour mining methods, particularly haulback methods, using the combined front-end loader (FEL)/ truck, tractor/scraper, and FEL-truck and scraper. Engineering analyses, including machine selection, sequencing, ease of varying production rates, slope requirements (for stability and running surfaces) and drainage requirements can be performed after the geometric constraints dictated by in situ conditions and regulatory requirements have been conceptualized. Once all generalized geometries have been established, reduction to idealized, three-dimensional views is achieved. These are then reduced to two-dimensional symbolic models, mainly plan views but also elevations and sections. Equipment activities and operations are then conveniently overlayed. Without this simple, two-dimensional reduction, technology transfer remains awkward and non-analytical.

The tectonic and sedimentary environment of the Central North American Rift System (CNARS) provides all excellent setting for major mineral deposits. Major north-northeast-trending high-angle normal or reverse faults and northwest-trending transcurrent fault systems may exercise control over ore forming processes. Gabbro and basalt are the dominant igneous rock types. Carbonatite and kimberlite occur in Nebraska and Kansas. Concentrations of Cu. Ni, Co, Ti, Au. Ag and PG-minerals are known to occur in this setting. Arkosic sandstone, siltstone, shale, and minor carbonate units occur on top of the rift basalts and in flunking basins where they may reach thicknesses of 10 km (6 miles). The potential, for stratiform or unconformity-related metalliferous deposits must be considered. The rift as a whole remains, however, largely unexplored.

The adsorption of gold onto activated carbon in iodide solutions was studied. The adsorption rates were determined as a function of temperature, salt concentration and pH, as well as activated carbon concentration. A kinetic model was developed for the adsorption. The adsorption rate was believed to be controlled by a combined mechanism of film diffusion and pore diffusion with the film diffusion having the most significant effect. Experimental findings were in good agreement with the model developed. The apparent activation energy was found to be 14.9 kJ/mol.
