Introduction This chapter addresses the need for operation manuals, presents an outline as a guide for writing the manual, discusses who should write the manual, suggests how it is implemented and gives tips to potential manual writers. Theory & Purpose of Operating Manuals The primary objective of the operating manual is to provide every operator the benefit of a uniform minimum level of training. This training is not only critical to the safety and efficiency of every employee, but also provides a basis for incorporating future operational improvements into standard and emergency procedures. The manual promotes safety through- out and additionally has a special section devoted to safety. The operator should be able to find information on chemical and physical hazards as well as be exposed to safety procedures for such items as motor lockouts and tank entries. The operating manual will usually reference a separate safety manual or incorporate parts of the safety manual. Safety is also promoted through standardized procedures for operation of equipment. Standardized operation is the second most important reason for the writing of manuals. If equipment is started, operated, and shut down in a consistent manner, then operational efficiency should be maximized. If it is not, then the procedure is adjusted until it is. The experience of many can be condensed into set responses for start up, shutdown, steady state operations, and upsets. Implicit with the standardized operation objective is a minimum level of training the operator will receive by thorough familiarization with the manual. The ability to know the contents of the manual is a basic requirement for operator status. The operating manual serves as a basis for a training program both at the start of the new plant and as new operators are hired or promoted into the job. The operating manual is a collection of at least part of the knowledge that "key people" own and will cushion the loss of key personnel for whatever reason. The manual can only fulfill these lofty goals by being a dynamic document. Manuals must change as equipment is modified and superior techniques evolve. "Underground mining processes are dangerous. The design of mining equipment, which is able to cope with the hostile underground environment, is a challenge for all machine manufacturers. Presupposition for realizing the vision of SANDVIK for zero harm for working with SANDVIK equipment is the installation of the appropriate processes. Into the product engineering and product development processes of Sandvik Mining and Construction, a specific "Product Safety Process" has been integrated, where all safety related activities like identification of all life cycle hazards, risk management and safety verification / validation are planned, performed and documented. Product safety shall be „designed into" the products. Therefore, specific research activities have been started, to address the safety and health related topics for the development and for the engineering of SANDVIK mining machines."

External control of the electrochemical potential of a bed of mineral particles was investigated by the US Bureau of Mines as a method for controlling particle interaction with organic collectors and, thus, flotation response. A cylindrically shaped, 200- to 300-g bed of sulfide mineral particles was used as the working electrode in an electrochemical-flotation cell. In a pH 9.2 sodium tetraborate buffer, chalcocite floated with ethylxanthate at applied potentials [=] - 0.25 V (versus the standard hydrogen electrode) ; pyrite floated at potentials [=] 0.15 V. Differential separation of a chalcocite-pyrite mineral mixture was obtained by controlling the potential, but the flotation response of the mixture did not follow the behavior predicted from measurements on the individual mineral beds. Chalcocite dissolution products had a deleterious effect on chalcocite-pyrite separation by activating pyrite so that it floated below the potential (~ 0.13 V) at which xanthate is oxidized to dixanthogen. A pyrite bed activated with a copper(II) sulfate solution exhibited a flotation response with a potential dependence between that of chalcocite and pyrite. Pyrite dissolution products had no effect on chalcocite flotation.

Metal removal kinetics and metal ion selectivity in ion flotation were studied from a thermodynamic perspective. Surface tension data could be used with the Gibbs adsorption equation to quantitatively predict the metal ion removal kinetics in alkylsulfate-Cu systems. However, surface tensions predicted cation selectivity coefficients in the sodium dodecyl-sulfate (SDS)-Cu-Ca and SDS-Cu-Pb systems rather poorly, although the predicted order of the selectivity (Cu2+<Ca2+<Pb2+) was correct. Another thermodynamic selectivity model, which used the Grahame adsorption equation and a geometrical analysis, predicted cation selectivity coefficients that agreed very well with experimentally measured values.

The dissolution behavior of silver and copper form their elemental states and Ag/Cu alloys in ammoniacal solutions has been studied using rotating disc electrodes. The variables studied included concentration of ammonia, oxygen partial pressure and rotating speed of the disc. The results have been interpreted in terms of the mixed potential theory. The effect of local current resistance on the overall current has also been examined as a part of the governing theory of the dissolution. It was observed that the dissolution potential and the rate of dissolution were very much affected by the composition of the alloys.

Sequential and evolutionary changes through time are recognizable in many, perhaps most major families of ore deposits and their geological environments. These changes are additional useful indicators of the evolutionary history of the earth and its tectonic processes. They are important in mineral exploration because they involve consideration of time as a fourth dimension, thereby indicating the most favorable ages, rather than types of rock for investigation. Many of the changes are analogous to those recognized in faunal evolution. Some primitive, unspecialized types of ore deposits occur nearly unchanged through rocks of widely differing age. Others diversify into several, more specialized variants, whereas still others become extinct. The place of these is taken by new, younger types, some of which undergo sudden proliferations and later diversifications of their own. In Archean greenstone belts irrlportant iron, nickel, gold, and base metal deposits occur co-regionally, but in different stratigraphic positions in the same, thick volcano-sedimentary successions. Here their close temporal and spatial associations suggest common genetic exhalative hydrothermal processes. The massive base metal sulfide family of ore deposits provides an excellent example of evolutionary changes, exhibiting distinct variations through both time and space. Deposits belonging to this family span the entire range of time, occurring in rocks of ancient Archean to Recent age, and specific types within the family also span the entire range of spatial environments from ensimatic to ensialic. Moreover there are possible evolutionary metallogenic links between certain types of massive base metal sulfide deposits and other important base metal ores, noteably Mississippi Valley-type and porphyry copper deposits.

This paper addresses the challenges of designing the underpinning of major sub-way station with 4 operating tracks. No. 7 subway extension crosses under the existing 42nd street subway station on the 8th Avenue line. Understanding the history of the original construction, of the current structures and their condition were instrumental in developing a feasible underpinning design that is integrated with the design of the new tunnels. The existing 8th Avenue subway station has a lower abandoned level. Several alignments and corresponding underpinning schemes were studied. The design allows new tunnel construction under the station without interruption of station operations.

Feldspathic deposits occur widely throughout the United States, but North Carolina, California, Connecticut and South Carolina accounted for over 80% of the total domestic feldspar output for the year 1973.1 Pegmatites and granites constitute the major feldspar reserves of the United States,2 and in addition, feldspar is produced as a by-product by firms whose major products are spodumene and mica.3 Feldspar is concentrated by hand-cobbing and flotation; the latter forms the major method of separating and concentrating feldspar. Feldspar flotation is practiced in the United States, Mexico, Finland, Norway, West Germany, Japan and the USSR. According to the U. S. Bureau of Mines estimates, the production of feldspar in the United States and rest of the world were 704,000 tons and 2,514,000 tons respectively. Feldspar is principally used as a flux in making glass, pottery, porcelain, enamel,-tile and other ceramic products. In recent years, the domestic feldspar industry is faced with a number of problems. As a result of increased cost of energy and the introduction in 1972 of new legislative programs relating to air, water, and noise pollution, land-use restrictions, and mined-land rehabilitation, the production costs have increased. Apart from the increased cost of operation, an operational problem exists with the feldspar producers in North Carolina, especially those in the Spruce Pine area. This problem is concerned with the use of hydrofluoric acid in the feldspar flotation. Feldspar producers in Spruce Pine, North Carolina have been discharging process waste water into the North Toe River. The mill waste water contains active fluoride ions. Fluoride in excessive concentrations is undesirable in waters used for drinking. It is stated that water

Significant changes in the markets for coal have taken place since World War II, As used in this study the term ?coal? will refer to bituminous coal, The anthracite industry in size, characteristics, and problems differs materially from the bituminous coal industry, These changes have both influenced and been influenced by the mechanization of mines, and by decreased distribution costs, especially in transportation. It is the purpose of this paper to examine these post-war changes, to assess their impact upon the production and distribution of coal, and to explore future market developments in the light of past and present trends and relationships. The layman lacks adequate informatian on the production, demand, and distribution of coal. There are two reasons for this. First, there is a relative lack of statistics coveting the industry, Coal operators and distributors are not required to file with any government agency the type of much more complete statistics filed by the railroads and public utilities with national and State agencies. The Bureau of Mines assembles much useful information on the coal industry, but several areas, including that of investment and finance, have no central depository which can be used to keep the public informed of the nature and extent of the industry and its problems.

Mechanization has been at the core of productivity improvements since the industrial revolution. During the past 20 years, mining has derived spectacular progress from mechanization. In the future, however, mechanization alone will not be enough. In the next few decades, automation will bring about new generations of highly productive and safe machines, with low operating costs. Increased use of new and better technology is generally accepted as the prime factor capable of closing the productivity gap. The productivity gap is the difference between inflation and metal prices. The three S-curves in Fig. I represent the evolution of technology in general, and mining in particular. TI represents incremental changes. the dominant sort of technology changes in the mining industry: - Better drills, electric hydraulic drills vs. pneumatic drills, the drilling rate is twice as fast. - Better steel and bits, to accommodate the higher performance drills. - Improved chemical explosives. - Bigger trucks in open pits.

This paper is in three parts. Part I discusses the various types of cement clinker coolers now in full-scale operation. Part II is a detailed study of the criteria for selection of the type of cement clinker cooler best suited for a given installation. Part III covers a number of cooling problems and their solutions in some of the metals industries. The large and world-wide problem of cement clinker cooling has motivated much study and development and the coverage here of this work is somewhat detailed. In contrast the cooling problems of the metals industries are quite varied between industries and often quite different from plant to plant in the same industry because of basic differences in the requirements of the particular material being processed. Therefore the coverage of metals industries coolers is somewhat more general. It is believed that all of the technology covered here may be of interest to those working with the problems of cooling hot materials.

Ground falls (roof and rib) have historically been responsible for nearly 50% of all fatalities in bituminous underground coal mines. In recent years, the number of some annual ground fall fatalities has approached zero, indicating that significant progress has been made. On the other hand, the twin disasters at Crandall Canyon in 2007, in which nine miners perished in violent coal bumps, provided a stark reminder that complacency is premature. One important success has been a great reduction in the number of miners killed inby roof supports. Throughout the 1990s, these accounted for nearly half of all roof fall fatalities, but there have just been two inby incidents since 2005. Progress has also been made in pillar recovery, where there has been just one fatal incident since 2005. On the other hand, more than 300 miners continue to be injured each year by rock falling from between supports and 100 more are injured by rib falls. Together, these two categories also account for a large percentage of recent ground fall fatalities available technologies such as roof screen, rib bolting and inside control roof bolters could reduce injury and fatality rates if they were used more widely. Further advances in these areas will likely be the next big advance in ground control safety.

The Ohio valley division of consolidation coal company has incorporated two new aspects within its coal mining concern. A new communication system, thru the cooperation of the c. & p. Telephone company, has been established in each of our mines with its central control in the general office building. In conjunction with this system, a Texas instruments 960 a computer has been incorporated into the system. The purpose for our computer is to provide modernization and improvement to our safety, production and maintenance programs. Thru proper use, the computer will help eliminate inaccuracies and inefficiences that have previously caused inaccurate analysis of problems. Due to federal requirements for more reliable communications in underground mines, Ohio valley division is making a concentrated effort to improve its communication systems. Systems such as the magneto phone and trolley phone have been looked at more critically. It was found that these systems are being used well beyond their limits. With these facts in mind, division personnel started looking for a system that would have these built in advantages: ease of maintenance and installation, increased reliability, low cost, and an inherent ability as a multiple use system.

The aim of this paper is to describe and analyze the ground treatment performed between January and May 2002 in order to increase safety during excavation and reduce instability problems along 180 m of tunnel, during the construction works associated with line 10 extension to the Madrid Metro. The tunnel was excavated using the traditional Madrid Method and in the section considered in this paper layers of sand were detected around the tunnel crown area with a significant presence of water, the in?ow of which needed to be controlled with a minimum impact on the surrounding environment.

Process automation can provide better utilization of capital investments. Furthermore, it is a necessity for securing the high demands of product quality. In this paper, process automation in underground mining as well as in the beneficiation plant will be discussed. The development of reliable broadband communication systems for real-time transfer of image, audio and data have enabled remotely controlled LHDs and drilling rigs. In the beneficiation plants, model-based expert control systems far on-line dynamic process optimization and control have been installed in unit operations such as grinding, flotation and induration.

"Taking the long flame coal, gas-fat coal and anthracite as samples, we tested the adsorption quantity to single component gas of N2, CO2 and CH4 under atmospheric pressure phase at different temperatures. Then we analyzed the adsorption characteristics and models of different metamorphic coals. The results show that metamorphic grade, temperature and gases species are main factors to adsorption quantity of coal. The higher and lower metamorphic grade of coal have greatly influence on adsorption capacity while moderate grade of coal has opposite result. The coal adsorption amount to three single component gases under the same experimental condition is CO2> CH4> N2.The simulation precision order of four adsorption models is quadratic curve model > Freundlich isotherm model> Langmuir model >logarithmic curve model. Quadratic curve model and Freundlich isotherm model both can accurately describe the adsorption behaviors of N2 and CH4, different isothermal adsorption curve of CO2 needs two kinds or more models to describe. This has a reference value to the study of adsorption characteristics and models to single component gases.INTRODUCTION Adsorption is the interfacial phenomena that concentration of single or multiple components in the interface layer is different from the bulk phase (1964). Adsorption model is mathematical models to describe the adsorption characteristics of the adsorbent, mainly reflected to fitting effect of gas adsorption isotherm, which contribute to deeply understand the adsorption characteristics of adsorbent. Many scholars have carried out extensively experimental studies of the coal adsorption process from different angles. Zhao (2010) studied the influence of coal metamorphism to pore development of coal seam through a variety of experimental methods. Zhang (2006) analyzed the adsorption capacity and the controlling factors from three aspects of the coal rank, maceral and coal mass deformation. Cheng et al., (2002) studied the influence of pore size distribution of different rank coals to adsorption constants. Zhong (2002) carried out varieties of isothermal assay and established the prediction method of coal seam adsorption affected by a variety of conditions. R. M. Bustin (1998) proposed that we could not simply describe the change law of coal adsorption capacity and maceral content by a fixed parameter, and the adsorption capacity of the same coal rank also has great change. C. R. Clarkson et al., (1997) used four different adsorption models to describe the coal methane adsorption process, and the fitting precision of adsorption models is D-A equation >D-R equation > BET equation> Langmuir equation. Gasem, K et al., (2003) found that the fitted isothermal adsorption curve of D-A equation and BET equation are better than Langmuir equation under high pressure condition, while D-R equation and BET model are better to CO2 adsorption. In recent years, scholars’ at home and abroad research achievements of coal adsorption focused on high-pressure stage (about 0~15 MPa), mainly for coalbed methane exploitation, carbon dioxide trapping and sealing technology development, but the study of coal adsorption under atmospheric pressure phase is little. In this paper, we analyzed the adsorption characteristics and models under atmospheric pressure phase, it has a reference value to the study of characteristics and models to single component gas."

"INTRODUCTION Sorting technology has advanced rapidly recently. Of the two possibilities particle sorting has advanced especially in introducing new sensors and the use of multiple sensors. The analyzing and computing lead times have also shortened. This has made it a viable technology option for many applications but not for the most important sorting task at a mine; the run-of mine ore. Bulk sorting, however, has advanced in smaller steps, even if the technology has the capability to tackle the run-of-mine ore and offers a high potential to bring mines substantial economic benefits. The sensors, which are useful are restricted by the difficult operating conditions or by the ore characteristics. One of the important features of run-of-mine sorting technology is the major material handling infrastructure required. The capital expenditure can be substantial requiring good understanding of the sortability curve (grade-recovery curve) behavior of the ore. This paper discusses one industrial case, where substantial amount of data measured from the ore feed belt has been obtained. This data was then analyzed for the grade recovery curves obtainable from that ore with sorting. EXPERIMENTAL The XRF measurement used was the FCA device from IMA Engineering (Fig.1). It is a specially built version of XRF designed to operate with coarse material. The measurement was situated at the main belt conveyor taking ore from the primary crusher to the stockpile. The crushed ore was about 80% -300 mm at a capacity of 1100-1200 tph (Fig.2). Measurement times were varied from 30 seconds to a minute. Measurements were obtained over several months.As the XRF is a surface distribution measuring technique, the measurement was first tested upon accuracy and reproducibility against plant daily wet chemical assays and against on-line Courier feed analysis. As there is a varying delay in the ore stockpile, the delay time was used as a variant in the validation. Different measurement times were tested for accuracy. A one minute measurement time gave a total measurement relative standard error, which was both for Cu and Ni below 3%. The results showed also very robust correlations; for Cu, the correlation coefficient was R > 0,94 for one minute measurements over three months and R > 0,86 for Ni respectively. Fig 3. Many techniques that are used to characterize and monitor microbial populations associated with sulfide mineral bioleaching require the cultivation of the organisms on solid or liquid media. Chemolithotrophic species, such as Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Leptospirillum ferrooxidans, or thermophilic chemolithotrophs, such as Acidianus brierleyi and Sulfolobus solfataricus can grow quite slowly, requiring weeks to complete efforts to identify and quantify these microbes associated with bioleach samples. Real-time PCR (polymerase chain reaction) assays in which DNA targets are amplified in the presence of fluorescent oligonucleotide primers, allowing the monitoring and quantification of the amplification reactions as they progress, provide a means of rapidly detecting the presence of microbial species of interest, and their relative abundance in a sample. This presentation will describe the design and use of such assays to monitor acidophilic microbes in the environment and in bioleaching operations. These assays provide results within 2-3 hours, and can detect less than 100 individual microbial cells.

"Understanding mill charge motion is important. In the charge, the center of gravity is shifted from the rotational center of the mill system, and its motion is induced by rotation of the mill. At the same time, the charge creates a torque in the mill system. Breakage of ore particles and wear of liners/ball media are closely linked to this motion. To study these phenomena in a physically correct manner, numerical models for different parts of the mill system are needed. Validations of such models are scarce, because of the difficulty of measuring inside a tumbling mill. Experimental measurements in a lab mill were done for a number of load cases: varying feed material, mill filling, mill speed and pulp liquid. The mill is set up to measure the charge-induced torque. The accuracy is good, with relative uncertainty less than ± 2% for relevant load cases. A full three-dimensional numerical model of the whole mill is used to predict induced torque. Agreement between predicted and measured torque at steady-state is good. In addition, the model can accurately predict the mill startup behavior for torque and mill power. This proves that the model is physically correct, and can be used for modeling large-scale mills.IntroductionUnderstanding of the charge motion within the mill is of importance in mill optimization. The breakage of ore particles and the wear of liners/ball media are closely linked to the charge motion. To study these phenomena in a physically correct manner, appropriate numerical models for different parts of the mill system must be used. Validation of these models is of major importance. This has led to an increased interest in obtaining an accurate and direct measurement of mill load and the behavior of the mill charge.For structural analysis, the finite element method (FEM) is the most developed and most frequently used numerical method. FEM is a numerical solution method based on continuum mechanics modeling. A constitutive relation for the actual material is described, and the governing equations are solved in Zienkiewicz and Taylor (2000). Varieties of different constitutive models for a large number of materials are implemented in modern FEM code. The computability of nonlinear problems in solid mechanics is investigated in Belytschko and Mish (2001), among others."

Two 8.2 m diameter flood control tunnels are being constructed in the Taylor Shale Formation beneath San Antonio, Texas. These tunnels use precast concrete segments as final lining. This paper describes the features of the segments chosen for this project. The tunnels are being excavated with a hybrid Tunnel Boring Machine. This paper also describes the features of the TBM which make the machine compatible to the type of segments chosen.
