Surface water samples were collected from water accumulations at the surface of a neutral pH mine tailings deposit in Kristineberg (Sweden) where algal growth and iron hydroxide precipitates were observed. Ferric iron in the aqueous samples was determined by (adsorptive) differential pulse - cathodic stripping voltammetry. The analyses indicated that labile Fe3+ concentrations were in the range <20 to 337 nM, while total Fe3+ levels were much higher at 0.9 to 8.3 uM. The labile Fe3+ levels are more than two orders of magnitude greater than would be expected based on equilibrium with ferrihydrite. These results suggest that iron complexation with strong ligands in the surface water competes with iron hydrolysis, and that these ligands may be of algal and/or bacterial origin.

The Falcon concentrator is capable of separating minerals in fine size classes based on their differential density. Separation of mineral particles depends upon the fluid flow characteristics and relative movement of particles in a fluid. In the present study, a fluid flow characteristic inside the Falcon concentrator was established through experimentation and modeling. The Falcon concentrator has two fluid entry points: (a) Fluid entering through gravity assisted feeding system and (b) Fluid entering through the fluidized hole on the concentrator wall. In order to identify the role of fluid entering the concentrator, a tracer was injected into the system. As per the tracer based experimentation, it was established that fluid entering through the gravity based feeding system is responsible for thin flowing film formation in the stratification zone where particles are stratified based on their relative density. The momentum balance and continuity equations were simplified for a high centrifugal force field, and the fluid velocity profile was estimated inside the thin flowing film. Estimated fluid flow profiles will help to simulate the particle trajectories inside the Falcon concentrator. The influence of rotational speed, fluid flow rate, and cone angle on the fluid velocity profile were investigated. Fluid thickness over the concentrator wall is also estimated, and it is typically of the order of ~150–200 μm.

The design of an information management system (IMS) for a mineral processing plant requires prior consideration of many factors, which can be broadly categorized into two domains, process plant considerations and IMS considerations. The process plant considerations include: plant characteristics, management and personnel issues, existing organizational standards and policies, and the level of existing hardware and software systems. The IMS considerations include: system functionality, system sizing and desired performance, hardware components, software components, and system support issues. All of these aspects must be addressed in order to achieve a functionally successful and cost effective system. The purpose of this paper is to lay out these design issues and, in doing so, to provide process engineers with a guideline with which to tailor a system that is best suited to their specific application. The paper is completed by presenting an approach that has been used in two Canadian concentrators. Both of these plants have incorporated MillEX, a software system designed specifically as the central component of a mineral processing IMS.

Two epiclastic horizons in an Archean volcanic sequence host the gold occurrences on the Dunraine property near Wawa, Ontario, Canada. The Grace horizon of cherty and pelitic tuff strikes north-northwest and dips east. Native gold occurs with arsenopyrite in bedlike and podlike bodies of quartz lenses and stringers set in a pelitic matrix. The Parkhill horizon of lithic graywacke with associated flow-breccia strikes southwest and dips south. Native gold occurs with minor sulfides in similar bodies of quartz erratic within the Parkhill horizon. The auriferous bodies occupy paleotopographic channels and troughs within the two horizons. The former producers are the Parkhill mine with 1689 kg (54,300 oz) Au, Darwin mine with 473 kg (15,200 oz) Au, and Van Sickle mine with 48 kg (1536 oz) Au between 1902 and 1944. The gold occurrences are syndepositional with the host volcanic sediments laid during a pause in explosive volcanism. Fumaroles along steep gullies on the flank of a subaqueous volcanic center precipitated aprons of auriferous silica-sulfide mud. Downslope slumping resulted in exhalative debris flows; gold concentrated in flexures and depressions along stumpage channels. Renewed explosive volcanism covered the auriferous sediments with pyroclastic tuffs, arresting the slumping of in situ fumarolic deposits.

An investigation of the removal of finely divided silica, coal, and alumina particles less than 20,µm in size has been carried out using liquid fluidized and packed beds. The bed particles used included 48x100, 100x150, and 150>200-mesh silica, corundum, and ilmenite particles. Important variables examined included surface charge, flow rate, pH and amount of bed particles. Surface charge has been identified as the most important variable in this system. Van der Waals force also assumes a very important role in the recovery of fine particles in fluidized and packed beds. In addition to interaction between large and fine particles, interaction between fine particles themselves assumes an important role in the overall recovery.

The expanding volume of maritime coal transportation is intensifying the problems concerning large vessel service port construction, transshipment and environmental control. The major problem is the transshipment of coal. Customary methods for bulk transfer must be improved and/or new systems developed. Slurry unloading has a key role in the new systems. The present report reviews progress in slurry transportation research which has been done in Japan since the 1960s when large scale experiments for domestic transportation were done. Experiments on the effects of vibration on the slurry cargo and on reslurrying are discussed.

This paper presents and discusses some of the computer models developed and currently used at the Earth Mechanics Institute (EMI) of the Colorado School of Mines (CSM). These include the performance models for full and partial face machines. Examples of input and output of these models will be illustrated for typical mining operations by using machines such as Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM), Continuous Miners (CM), Marietta borer miners and longwall drum shearers. The general approach to modeling and the available models are discussed and some examples of these models are presented. The comparison between the estimated and achieved performance, as well as the degree of improvement in the performance due to balancing and modification in cutterhead design are also discussed.

In this paper a method is presented for estimating the specifications of sandstone-type uranium deposits which will be the minimum that can meet a company&apos;s economic requirements for investment. The method interpolates and extrapolates from available cost data for typical mines to provide the costs for a wide range of possible deposits. The range of deposits achieving the company&apos;s required discounted cash flow rate of return on investment at an estimated uranium oxide selling price is then calculated, thus giving the complete range of deposits which meet the minimum required specifications. Prospects are then evaluated by comparison with these minimum requirements.

East Side Access (ESA) will extend Long Island Rail Road into midtown Manhattan via 11 km of tunnels, a new terminal station and associated rail support facilities. The hard-rock tunneling in Manhattan will traverse under Park Avenue and some of the most historically and commercially significant real estate in the world. The soft-ground tunneling in Queens will traverse beneath Amtrak’s Sunnyside Yard and the Harold Inter locking, the busiest rail interlocking in North America. This paper details ESA’s program-wide geo-instrumentation monitoring system for obtaining, processing and presenting all geotechnical monitoring data. Data streams will be real-time, such as from automated total stations, and manually read, such as from optical survey instruments and handheld data loggers. All data will be input into a web-based Geo-Instrumentation Data Management System, which will be accessible to project stake holders via ESA’s intranet or via the Internet using remote access controls.

The market for titanium feedstocks (ilmenite, rutile,synthetic rutile and slag) is driven primarily by offtake from the titanium dioxide (TiO2) pigment industry. The pigment sector depends on the performance of the global economy. Titanium sponge is the first stage of titanium metal manufacture. It constitutes a minor component (3 percent) of overall demand for titanium feed-stocks. Production and consumption TiO2 pigment consumption in 2004 was estimated to be 4.63 Mt (5.1 million st), up 7.6 percent from 2003. It was driven by strong demand in most regions. In the United States, apparent TiO2 pigment consumption rebounded by 5.4 percent (highest growth rate since 1997) to an estimated 1.12 Mt (1.23 million st), following the decrease in demand during 2003. Chinese TiO2 pigment consumption continued its strong upward trend, increasing by 10 percent to 598 kt (659,000 st) in 2004.

Breccia pipes are vertical pipe-like columns of rocks that provide conduits for fluid flow and open spaces for mineral precipitation, hence are focus areas for exploration. In the Gallinas Mountains, Lincoln County, New Mexico, there is recorded production of Cu, Pb, Ag, F, Fe, REE (as bastnäsite), and Au from 1902 to 1980, but no production reported from the breccia pipes. Previous studies described the occurrence of REE in breccia pipes, but their transportation and deposition controls are still unclear. The aim of this research is to characterize the magmatic-hydrothermal breccia pipes in order to understand the geochemical and physical conditions of deposition of REE and gold in the breccia pipes found in the Gallinas Mountains. There are more than 20 exposed breccia pipes that form a NE-trending belt about 3–5 kilometers, mostly gray-brown and consist of angular- to sub-rounded rock fragments, some host high concentrations of REE (80,500 ppm total REE) and Au (175 ppb). Preliminary studies suggest they are magmatic and intruded into the host rock and, subsequently, hydrothermal fluids precipitated F-REE and Au along the edges of some breccia pipes. More studies are underway to test this hypothesis.

"The Freeport-McMoRan Sierrita Crystal Plant produces Copper (II) Sulfate Pentahydrate (CuSO4·5H2O) through a series of cooling crystallizers. In this process, high supersaturation and unwanted spontaneous nucleation promote fine crystals. Seeding through recycled crystal classification can manipulate the crystal size distribution (CSD) for larger crystals. Proper selection of the crystallizer for seeding can prevent spontaneous nucleation and promote final crystal size. This study shows when seeding temperature is closer to the crystallizer temperature, suspension densities in the crystallizers are promoted and overall CSD shifts to a larger size of crystals. INTRODUCTION Figure 1 shows an overview of the crystallization process. The in-plant feed flow, called Pregnant Mother Liquor (PML), enters the first crystallizer and is subsequently cooled through a series of four crystallizers. Specific temperatures are targeted for each crystallizer to ensure the crystallization process is operating within the metastable zone (MSZ). The discharged flow from crystallizer #5 then enters two cyclones. The overflow from the cyclones contains smaller crystals providing seed crystals for crystallizer #5. The underflow from the cyclones begins the drying process. The overflow from crystallizer #5 enters cyclone #3 for removal of fine crystals and seeding purposes. The underflow from cyclone #3 has the capability to provide seed crystals for crystallizer #1 or crystallizer #2. The overflow leaves the system as Spent Mother Liquor (SML). Undersize crystals dissolve into the PML and return back to crystallizer #1.THEORIES AND METALLURGICAL TESTS Seeding requires an understanding of the crystal size, solution temperature and amount of crystals that enter the crystallizers (1). For the seed crystal size, classified crystal seeds can prevent fine crystals returning back into the system which eventually leads to excessive agglomeration (2). Proper selection of the crystallizer can ensure seeding at an appropriate temperature. Seeding at a temperature much lower or higher than the saturation temperature promotes spontaneous nucleation. Typically, seeding between 4-5°F below the saturation temperature is acceptable (5). A general rule of thumb is to add the seed crystals at the temperature between the solubility curve and the metastable zone. An experiment conducted by Mettler-Toledo AutoChem, Inc. indicates seeding close to the solubility curve rather than the metastable zone promotes a lower supersaturation and nucleation rate but yields a higher growth rate and a greater number of larger crystals (1). The amount of seed crystals can not only change the suspension density but also narrows the width of the MSZ in the crystallizers. An experiment conducted by Jaroslav Nyvlt reports with the crystals absent, the maximum allowable undercooling is 6.3 degrees at a cooling rate, 5°C/hour. With the presence of crystals, it narrows the MSZ width to 2.2 degrees (4). Industrial crystallizers normally operate at suspension densities between 15% and 25% by mass. When suspension densities are lower than 15%, it increases the risk of primary nucleation and the probability of incrustations; on the other hand, if the suspension densities are greater than 25%, it can cause a greater attrition rate and increase the probability of deposits (6). Moreover, operating suspension densities between 15% and 25% are also sufficient to minimize supersaturation rate which promotes crystal growth over nucleation (2, 6)."

The expanded role which coal has been assigned in the energy future of the United States has raised numerous policy questions. The very complexity of these questions makes them suitable to analysis by econometric models. However, as the Wall Street Journal indicated in its recent article, business&apos; success with such models have been mixed. I have been asked to present my views as to how coal producers can use such models and in what ways the industry is likely to be impacted by such models. I do not presume to speak for the whole coal industry, but only to share with you the personal observations of one who has worked "both sides of the street", having been employed&apos; both by government and a consulting firm prior to joining the coal industry. In my opinion, the use of econometric models to analyze the coal industry will impact the coal producers in two main ways. First, their use by government will have a profound impact on future government policies related to the mining, transportation and utilization of coal. Second, such models, when properly calibrated and refined, may become useful tools for the coal producers in doing market research and long-range planning. While the former has already begun to impact on the operating environment or the coal industry, the latter is still in the embryo stage.

Elemental analysis of slurry streams using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) has long been employed. However, detector technology has limited the application of XRF devices. Using detector technology employed on NASA&apos;s Mars Pathfinder to analyze soil samples, Process Control, Inc. has developed an on-line analyzer to mount on a sampling system. The prototype XRF elemental analyzer was installed at Detroit Edison&apos;s Monroe Power Plant in January, 1998 and has been employed to monitor feedstock quality. A slurry system has been developed for flotation control. This paper describes the testing of the analyzer using the new, draft ISO standard for evaluating the performance of on-line analyzers (ISO/DIS 15239).

Hydraulic transport is commonly used in mining for moving particles or ore concentrates in pipes over long distances with a water stream. Control and monitoring of this process require sensor technology that can obtain relevant characteristics of the two-phase flow. This work investigates the acoustic emission (AE) technology for monitoring a hydraulic system with different sand concentrations, showing the strong relationship between friction behavior in the pipe and the measured AE signals.

Control of radiation hazards in mines is only one of many goals of the Bureau of Mines. Radiation research is only a small part of the Bureau&apos;s mine health and safety research program. In this paper I will describe the mission and programs of the entire Bureau of Mines, with emphasis on the mine health and safety program of which our radiation research is a part. The radiation program and its results will be described in detail by other speakers during this symposium. The Bureau of Mines was established in 1910 and is one of a number of agencies within the Department of Interior. Our mission is given by the Organic Act of the Bureau of Mines, last revised in 1913, which still accurately describes our work today. The amended Organic Act (Public Law 62-386) gives the Bureau authority "... to conduct inquiries and scientific and technologic investigations concerning mining, and the preparation, treatment, and utilization of mineral substances with a view to improving health conditions, and increasing safety, efficiency, economic development, and conserving resources through the prevention of waste in the mining, quarrying, metallurgical, and other mineral industries; to inquire into the economic conditions affecting these industries..." Since 1913 at least 52 public laws bearing on Bureau responsibilities have come into force. However, our basic role is still unchanged, i.e. improving health conditions, and increasing safety and efficiency in the mineral industries. The two principal activities of the Bureau are Minerals Information and Analysis and Minerals Research. The Minerals Information and Analysis programs provide the data base and the analytical capability to support the development of effective national mineral policies. Data on the availability, production, and utilization of minerals are collected, interpreted, and analyzed for some 100 commodities. Resources of the most important commodities are evaluated to support policymaking that influences utilization of the Nation&apos;s existing and potential mineral supplies. The President&apos;s budget for the Mineral Information and Analysis programs in fiscal year 1982 is $34 million. The largest activity of the Bureau is Minerals Research, which is divided into three major programs: Mineral Resources Technology, Minerals Environmental Technology, and Minerals Health and Safety Technology. The principal goal of the Mineral Resources Technology program is to help provide technology to maintain an adequate supply of minerals for the United States. The budget requested by the President for this program in fiscal year 1982 is $41 million. The goal of the Minerals Environmental Technology Program is to create mining and mineral processing operations that are more compatible with the environment. The budget for this program in fiscal year 1982 is $12 million. The largest program of the Bureau is Minerals Health and Safety Technology, which has the goal of providing the technology to protect the health and safety of mine workers. The budget for health and safety research for fiscal year 1982 is $55 million. Our radiation research is part of the health and safety research program. The Bureau of Mines has done research to improve health and safety conditions in mines since it was established in 1910. The research expanded greatly following the passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 (Public Law 91-173) and the Federal Mine Safety and Health Amendments Act of 1977 (Public Law 95-164). These acts provided for increased health and safety regulatory activities, but they also significantly increased the funding available for mine health and safety research by the Bureau of Mines. Funding for the Bureau&apos;s health and safety research grew from $12 million in 1970 to $60 million in 1981. The funding in 1982 will be somewhat lower than that for 1981. However, the health and safety program funding is still approximately 40 percent of the total budget of the Bureau of Mines. Of the health and safety budget, 22 percent is spent on research to control health hazards in mines, including radiation hazards, which has a budget in 1982 of approximately $1.1 million. Other mine health hazards which the Bureau is doing research to control include respirable mine dusts which cause black lung and silicosis; excessive noise; toxic gases from explosives and diesel emissions; and excessive heat in deep hot mines. The other 78 percent of the budget is spent on safety research to prevent death and injury to miners from such causes as roof falls, fires, explosions, and accidents involving mining equipment. Over the past decade the majority of the Bureau&apos;s health and safety research has been done through outside contracts with private industry and universities. Our policy has been to do some research inhouse to maintain the expertise of Bureau personnel. Contractors are used to do research for which the Bureau does not have the necessary personnel available. The percentage of the program being done by contract has been gradually declining for the past few years, and in 1982 the program will be divided evenly between inhouse and contract research. The inhouse research of the Bureau is done at the 10 research centers located throughout the country. Our radiation research is done at three research centers, Denver, Spokane and Pittsburgh, and by contractors whose work is monitored by project officers at these centers. There are three Federal agencies involved in mine health and safety. 13.1-SUBSIDENCE AND GROUND MOVEMENT ROBERT STEFANKO 13.1.1-SUBSIDENCE AND FAILURE This treatment of subsidence and ground movement will be confined to subsidence control for limiting surface damage by assessing the significant parameters affecting ground movements during mining to optimize mining techniques. The material will be equally applicable to evaporite mining as well as coal but will not deal with block caving or similar systems where failure is deliberately induced and surface protection is not necessary or provided. When an underground opening is established, the original equilibrium is disturbed with resultant stress concentrations. While many factors are involved in opening stability, the span (W) undoubtedly is one of the most important factors in failure. Assuming it is relatively small, the overlying rock strata can bridge across the opening and little if any movement or convergence of top and bottom will occur. However, as the span increases, a point is reached where the stress in the overlying rock strata exceeds some strength value of the rock, and the top breaks. If the opening span is limited to some subcritical value (-We) and/or is at great depth (D), a pseudo-arch will form, achielring stability before rupture occurs to the surface. The boundary of this arch is thought to approximate an ellipse in form with the major axis vertical and equal to four times W, although there has been little field research to substantiate this theory. However, if the width of this opening is increased at this horizon to some critical value (W,) or the same span is created in a shallower seam, the overlying strata ill progressively rupture to the surface and the characteristic subsidence trough is formed (Fig. 13-1) The area of the surface affected is much greater than the area of the seam extracted, depending on the "angle of draw" (a), which is the angle between a vertical line from the edge of the opening and another line extended to a point at which subsidence tails out to zero. This angle has been found to be about 35° in Europe but is rather academic, being a function of instrument precision in detecting subsidence. Since the subsidence effect is so small at any point beyond n 25° angle, this latter may be considered the practical limit of subsidence. Further- more, indications are that the angle of draw varies with depth and nature of the strata.&apos; In a field study over a 1,000-ft-deep potash mine in New Mexico, the maximum angle of draw was found to be 51.5°.2 So far, only a single opening has been considered. However, the width of the excavation applies to any complex mining system of entries, rooms and longwalls as long as the seam has been fully extracted and the width represents the distance from one solid rib to another. It will be noted that the amount of vertical displacement varies from point to point on the surface (s), but the maximum subsidence for a given trough occurs at the center (S). This latter value may not he equal to the maximum possible subsidence (Sm) which occurs only if a critical or super- critical (+W,) width has been exceeded (Fig. 13-1). Substantial surface damage can result when subsidence occurs. Factors affecting the amount and type of ground movement are: thickness and properties of the seam, angle of draw, width of excavation, depth and type of overburden, inclinations of strata and surface, and the amount of support left in the gob. INTRODUCTION Engineers involved with rock mechanics know the importance of discontinuities within a rock mass and their effect on its behavior when subjected to loads from structures or construction excavation activities. Various geophysical tools have been developed to provide comparative information on subsurface conditions, such as electrical resistivity, assorted seismic test methods, acoustic tests, etc. While these investigative means have proved invaluable in numerous situations, especially those where site alternatives are being evaluated, they shed little light on the difficult problem of quantifying the rock strength. For that purpose, a laboratory test program of samples obtained in the field is usually undertaken, often in conjunction with a variety of in-situ tests. While standard samples provide sufficient information on the rock properties, questions on the macro-structure of joints, faults, fissures, and their infillings often go unanswered. Presently, attempts are being made to incorporate into rock sampling technology new techniques which are directed towards providing better information on the incidense and orientation of discontinuities. One such device incorporates a scribe knife within the core barrel which scores the sample lengthwise as it is cored. The orientation of the scribe is known, thereby relating the bedding, planes, fractures, etc. to a spatial framework. A second approach, called the Integral Sampling Method, is the subject of this paper. The paper describes a variety of existing techniques and equipment which when combined together permit faster and cheaper drilling of shafts in soft to medium strength formations. Drilling fluid circulation, methods of hole stabilisation and bit design, including the advantages of flat bottomed and conical bits, shrouds and skirts, tungsten carbide, long tooth and disc cutters are considered. The principles of rock chip transportation and bottom hole cleaning are described together with a new and very efficient fluid circulation system which was invented by the author.
