The world has seen unprecedented economic changes in recent years, starting with the stock market collapse of 2008 and the great recession that followed. With these changes, the mining industry, like others, has been forced to find ways to adapt to the shifting and sometimes volatile conditions. It has been a bumpy ride that has not been easy. Prices for most commodities have been in a decline in the past several quarters ? albeit still well above the average prices of 10 years ago ? as the costs of production have been on a steady incline for the past 10 years. Adding to the concern was the report in April that China, which had grown at an average pace of 10 percent/year, for the past decade, slowed to less than 8 percent gross domestic product (GDP) growth this year, catching many off guard. Even gold, once the safe haven for investors during rocky times, stumbled in April of this year, losing 7 percent of its value in two days. So what?s an investor to do ? and how can companies still attract financing? For the first time in 10 years, SME, in conjunction with the New York Local Section of SME, attempted to clear the waters of the mining finance sector with a conference focused on ?Current Trends in Mining Finance.? Held at City University of New York, Graduate Center, April 29-30, the two-day conference attracted 148 attendees and was intended for senior executives and mining industry specialists, covering a range of important topics and trends through 17 panels with about 50 speakers. The presentations came from representatives from some of the most influential companies in the mining and financial sectors, including Citi, Nomura, Societe Generale, Caterpillar, Newmont Mining Corp., Ernst & Young, Export Development Canada (EDC), KPMG, HSBC, Tocqueville Asset Management, BNP Paribas, Revett Minerals, Royal Gold, Environ and ERM.

"Built in 1940’s to provide a key roadway arterial between New York and Boston, the Heroes Tunnel is the only highway rock tunnel in the state of Connecticut and is part of the Wilbur Cross Parkway. This 365.0 m long tunnel consists of two barrels, each with two lanes of traffic, and carries over 71,000 vehicles per day. For nearly 70 years, the tunnel has seen millions of vehicles pass through but time has taken its toll and now the tunnel lining, ventilation system and radial section joints are significantly deteriorated and in need of rehabilitation. Owned and maintained by the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT), CTDOT initiated a unique managed approach to mitigate the risk, social impacts and financial implications associated with rehabilitation of this tunnel. This new approach consists of performing field inspection and conducting a comprehensive study to explore six rehabilitation options, including construction of new tunnels and enlarging the existing tunnels. The main criteria for this study are: Impact on traffic and the resulting delay cost; Construction cost; Construction duration; and Construction complexity. This paper will present the results of the alternative study. PROJECT BACKGROUND Location and Importance Heroes Tunnel is located in the State of Connecticut within the Town of Woodbridge and the City of New Haven near the Town of Hamden border. Heroes Tunnel is the only true highway tunnel in the State of Connecticut. The tunnel is part of the Wilbur Cross Parkway (Route 15), a scenic connection between Hartford and New York. Originally constructed and opened to traffic in 1949, the tunneled portion of the parkway passes through the West Rock Ridge. The tunnel was originally named West Rock Tunnel, but was re-designated as Heroes Tunnel in 2003. Route 15 is a vital roadway within the State transportation infrastructure. In the vicinity of Heroes Tunnel, Route 15 carries approximately 71,000 vehicles daily. Locally, Route 15 provides access to residences, shopping centers, and points of interest, as well as other state roadways. Regionally, Route 15 connects New York to the Hartford area and serves as an alternate expressway route to I-95 and I-91. The tunnel is approximately 365.0 m long and passes through the West Rock Ridge. West Rock Ridge is an 11.3 km long rock ridge located on the west side of New Haven. A network of suburban streets abuts the mountain on all sides and a seasonal paved park road climbs to the crest of the ridge. Figure 1 depicts the tunnel topography and location."

The task of production planning in ore mining is primarily con¬cerned with the removal of ore blocks within planning periods spread over the life of the mining operation. The investigation of this problem in the past resulted in the introduction of computer based optimizing techniques for production scheduling and se¬quencing. Although these techniques succeed in computing an "optimal" mine output for one planning period, they usually fail in composing a practical and feasible mine plan over the periods in concern. This paper describes conventional production planning based on operations research and the capabilities of a knowledge-based approach. An example of a planning system for the Slovak under¬ground iron ore mine Nizna Slana will be presented. By combina¬tion of these two techniques this system should improve the qual¬ity of planning procedures.

In Chile there are significant amounts of gold in flotation tailings that could be recovered, being heap leaching the most promising alternative. In order to determine the feasibility of treating these tailings by this method, a detailed study is carried out using 4 representative samples. After defining the best conditions an economic evaluation is done for a plant treating 200 tpd, sensibilizing with respect to parameters such us gold price, tailing grade and capital costs. The results show that it is technically feasible treat these gold tailings by heap leaching with gold extractions over 70 %. It is also economically feasible for gold grades higher than 0.5 g/t and gold prices over 350 US/oz.

I'm glad this meeting is being held in New York. First, because the city is close to my home in New Jersey, only 35 minutes from Times Square ..... if I were to come to Times Square between two and three in the morning. Otherwise it takes two hours. But even more important is the fact that all of you good people from around the country and around the world will enjoy the unique experience of that warm friendly atmosphere in the greater metropolitan area, something that you won't see any place else on the face of the earth. Seriously, the greater metropolitan area has been a large part of my industrial, cultural and spiritual experience. There are many aspects of it which I find disagreeable but on net I would rather live in this area, at least for the time being, than any other area of the United States. As a consultant I find contact with financial institutions, corporate headquarters, information sources and a great many production and research facilities a valuable asset to my activity.

In November 1980 a combined airborne electro-magnetic (INPUT.) and magnetometer survey was conducted by Questor Surveys Limited in the State Line Area, Colorado-Wyoming. The survey was the result of discussions over a prolonged period between the authors and various investigators of the State kimberlite occurrences. As a result of these discussions and literature studies, it was decided that airborne geophysical methods would be potentially useful in the exploration for new kimberlite occurrences. The survey was designed by Paterson, Grant and Watson Limited and conducted by Questor Surveys Limited over an area in which more than 15 kimberlite bodies were known and on some of which ground geophysical surveys had been conducted. The survey was designed primarily to determine the airborne electromagnetic and magnetic responses of the known occurrences and to deter- mine whether these responses would be detectable under similar conditions in other parts of the State Line District and elsewhere.

Although techniques and practices of mining are highly advanced, coal pillar bursts or bumps continue to occur. Many uncertainties remain because of the highly anisotropic characteristics of coal seams that are associated with geologic structure and the mining-induced spatial redistribution of stress in coal pillars. Thus, to prevent fatalities in underground coal mining, continuous efforts are required to better understand the catastrophic failure mechanisms in coal mines. In this study, 3DEC modeling in conjunction with the Discrete Fracture Networks (DFNs) technique was performed to better understand the true anisotropic behavior of the specimens acquired from a bump-prone underground coal mine. The spatial characteristics of the dis- continuities (i.e., cleats and bedding planes) as input data for the 3DEC model are estimated based on the results of the laboratory tests and field observations. The DFNs explicitly generated the coal seam that was poorly or well cleated, indicating the different spacing between cleat apertures using the probability distribution functions for fracture density (or frequency) and size. The heterogeneity of the engineering properties (i.e., cohesion and tensile strength) are also considered by Monte Carlo simulations. Simulation results of laboratory tests using the 3DEC model and DFNs technique agreed well with the results of the laboratory tests. These calibrated results can be used as we seek to evaluate bump risk by modeling at field scale.

St. Peter sandstone is an arenaceous sheet that covers large area in North America. The interest for St. Peter sandstone has been increasing due to the upward trend for hydrofracturing and the consequent need for fracking sand. This material is possesses very unique mechanical properties. On the one hand, it is brittle as characterized by an unusually high friction angle, up to 69°, and steeply curved failure envelopes. On the other hand, it is friable, possessing extremely low, and in most cases zero cohesion. The underground mines that are working under this condition are lacking the ground control techniques for this particular mining environment. The geotechnical properties of the St. Peter sandstone were examined using uniaxial test, triaxial test, porosity test, flexural strength test. This paper aims to investigate the effect of microstructure on strength properties, utilizing microscopic studies, index test (porosity, size distribution).

Research efforts are just beginning to identify the acoustic signatures of very short pulses of sound associated with the fracture of single particles in an autogenous mill. This presentation will discuss the anticipated correlation between these data and the fundamental mechanisms of rock fracture It is hoped that further tests will help identify what design and operating parameters influence the acoustic spectra, determine whether different minerals have different spectra and correlate product particle size distribution with acoustic spectra.

The Separation Rapids property, located approximately 60 km (37 miles) north of Kenora, Ontario, Canada, is host to one of the largest rare metal pegmatite deposits in the world. This pegmatite was named the Big Whopper by its discoverer, Dr. Fred Breaks of the Ontario Geological Survey, because of the exceptional length and width of the surface exposure. The property is readily accessible from a main, all-weather road via a network of secondary logging roads. The main line of the Canadian National Railway passes through the village of Redditt, just 40 km (24 miles) south of the property. The Big Whopper is one of the complex-type (petalite sub-type) class of rare metal pegmatites that are geochemically the most highly evolved in the spectrum of granitic pegmatites. Such deposits are economically important as resources for the rare metals lithium, tantalum, cesium, and rubidium. While complex-type pegmatites are found in many areas of the world, most are too small to be profitably mined, however, with an inferred resource in excess of 15 million metric tons (mt) (17 million short tons [st]), the Big Whopper is only the fourth deposit of its type in the world with the size required to be of major economic importance. The other three deposits, which are currently in production, are the Tanco mine in Manitoba, the Bikita mine in Zimbabwe, and the Greenbushes mine in Western Australia. The Big Whopper is situated in the eastern continuation of the Archean Bird River greenstone belt which also hosts the Tanco pegmatite, approximately 60 km (37 miles) to the west. The principal commodities identified in the portions of the Big Whopper pegmatite explored to date are petalite (LiAlSi4010) and rubidium-rich K-feldspar. These are industrial minerals with important applications in the glass and ceramics industries. The Big Whopper also contains substantial quantities of lepidolite, a lithium, rubidium-mica which is the principal ore mineral for rubidium metal. Tantalum and cesium occur in anomalous levels with the petalite mineralization, and the possibility of finding zones of high enrichment in these valuable high-tech metals elsewhere in the deposit is excellent. Such enriched zones are typical of pegmatites as highly evolved as the Big Whopper. To date, the geological mapping and diamond drilling work completed by Avalon have delineated the Big Whopper pegmatite system over a strike length exceeding 1.5 km (0.9 miles), over widths ranging from 10 m to 80 m (30 feet to 260 feet) in thickness, and to a vertical depth of close to 300 m (1,000 feet), where it remains open. The pegmatite system consists of a vertically oriented massive petalite pegmatite dyke striking 280 degrees that is flanked by amphibolites containing a swarm of narrower albite and petalite dykes which have all undergone intense deformation in a high strain zone resulting in folding and intense shearing. The Big Whopper exhibits a mineralogical zonation pattern which is complicated by the superimposed deformation that has both folded and stretched the deposit. Drilling has defined a dilute geological resource totaling 7.1 million mt (7.8 million st) grading 1.283 percent Li20, 0.346 percent Rb20, and .007 percent Ta205 over a strike length of 600 m (2,000 feet), and to a vertical depth of 250 m (820 feet), where it remains open. The petalite and rubidium-rich-K-feldspars contained in the Big Whopper all appear to be of superior quality. The grades are consistent with a petalite content averaging 25-30 percent and a rubidium-rich-K feldspar content averaging 15-20 percent. The remainder of the rock consists mainly of albite, several types of mica, and quartz. Accessory minerals include columbitetantalite, cassiterite, apatite, garnet, and gahnite. Market studies show that the deposit is located close enough to existing transportation infrastructure to access rapidly growing, major markets in the glass and ceramics industries, both in the northeastern U.S. and Europe. There are only three competing lithium minerals producers in the world with the Bikita mine in Zimbabwe being the only major producer of petalite. The other lithium deposits produce spodumene, a less desirable lithium mineral. Lakefield Research Limited has successfully designed a process to produce an ultra-pure petalite concentrate containing up to 4.65 percent lithium oxide, and as little as 0.014 percent iron oxide, low levels of soda and potash, and negligible amounts of other trace elements. With these specifications, Avalon will have an excellent quality product for glass-ceramics applications such as Corningware®, CERAN® stove tops, and other thermal shock-resistant products. Lakefield is presently designing the balance of the flowsheet to produce separate concentrates of rubidium-rich K-feldspar, albite, mica, tantalum, tin, and high-purity quartz. Initial test work indicates that the feldspar products will be of exceptional quality. The K-feldspar concentrates contain 11-12 percent K20 and 1 percent Rb20, while the sodaspar contains over 10 percent Na20, and both have very low iron (0.01 percent Fe203). A preliminary economic model shows that with an initial production rate of 90,000 mt (100,000 st) per year, expanding to 170,000 mt (190,000 st) per year over 5 years, the project is capable of generating over CDN $10 million per year in pre-tax cash flow by year 5 on a capital cost of approximately CDN $30 million.

INTRODUCTION High energy breaking is an alternative to using ex¬plosives in underground secondary breaking operations. It also is a means of upgrading conventional hand-held breakers, manual sledge-hammer breaking, and scaling bar operations. Major areas of application are in sec¬ondary breaking over grizzlies and at drawpoints. Other applications include breaking down ripping lips in longwall seam mining, scaling in stopes and rooms, general demolition work, and roadway maintenance. There is considerable interest in high-energy impact breakers for use in primary ore breaking, but, as of 1977, all such applications have been only experimental (duToit, 1973; Joughin, 1976; Wayment and Grantmyre, 1976). EQUIPMENT Essentially, a high-energy impact hammer is a boom¬mounted pneumatically or hydraulically actuated breaker. The machine basically consists of a piston that oscillates in a housing and impacts the end of a tool or moil thrust against the rock. The force applied to the rock primarily depends upon the impact energy of the piston-the higher the impact or blow energy, the greater the force and, thus, the greater the rock break¬age. Among drill and breaker designers, a common expression for blow energy is "force of blow." Hand-held breakers are limited to blow energies of about 140 J (100 ft-lb), because the operator is unable to handle heavier machines efficiently or to absorb the recoil energy resulting from higher blow energies. How¬ever, these restrictions do not apply to boom mounted breakers; machines with blow energies on the order of 4000 J (3000 ft-lb) and higher are available commer¬cially for underground use. There is considerable evi¬dence to show that increasing the blow energy also in¬creases the efficiency of the breaking operation; i.e., more rock is broken per unit of energy expended (Grantmyre and Hawkes, 1975). Thus, there is a trend to higher blow-energy machines, particularly where high¬strength rocks are to be broken. In relation to rock breaking, the blow rate of boom¬mounted impact breakers is not as important as it is for rock drills. This is because the breaker must be moved over the work surface between blows. The blow rate is governed eventually by the power supply, and typical blow rates range between 200 and 600 blows per minute. As a general rule, light blow-energy machines have higher blow rates than heavier machines. Table 1 lists most of the boom-mounted impact breakers that were available commercially during 1977, and it gives details of the blow energies and machine weights. Restrictions are placed on the blow energy by the machine weight and size, and by the strength of the boom. Typically, boom-mounted impact hammers have a blow-energy to mass ratio of about 1.5, with lower values for lighter machines and higher values for heavier machines. In addition to supporting the hammer weight, the boom also has to absorb the recoil energy of the blow, which can be on the order of 1400 J (1000 ft-lb) for large hammers operating in a horizontal mode. Interesting exceptions to the general run of impactors are the Joy HEFTI hydraulic hammers. In these machines, the piston impacts onto a fluid cushion that is positioned between the piston and the impact tool. This approach allows very high piston velocities, over 30 m/s (100 fps), to be used without the risk of break¬ing the piston or impact tool. Steel on steel impacts must be limited to impact velocities of about 10 m/s (35 fps) due to the high impact stresses generated; thus, increased blow energies can be achieved only by increas¬ing the piston size. The Joy 514 HEFTI®, listed in Table 1, has a blow energy of 27 100 J (20,000 ft-lb), but, as of 1977, the machine has been used underground only on an experimental basis. Using a fluid cushion between the piston and the impact tool allows the use of light pistons, reducing the overall machine weight. The recoil energy, which must be absorbed by the boom for a given blow energy, is directly proportional to the piston to machine mass ratio, and operating with light pistons provides an addi¬tional benefit in reducing the requisite boom size. Both pneumatic and hydraulic hammers are avail¬able commercially. Although hydraulic hammers are a relatively recent development, they already outnumber the pneumatic machines in use. There has been some confusion over the selection of discount rates when performing stochastic simulations of a project's net present value (NPV) using risk- adjusted discounting techniques. Some argue that lower discount rates should be used when performing stochastic valuation simulations. This creates higher NPV values and improves the attractiveness of a project. Others argue that the discount rate should not be lowered for these simulations. This paper exposes the source of this confusion. It demonstrates that stochastic simulations do not remove the risk inherent in a project and, therefore-do not improve a project's value to the risk-averse investor. Risk-adjusted discount rates should, therefore, not be adjusted downward when performing stochastic NPV simulations. Stochastic simulations are, however, shown to he useful in several aspects of project valuation.

The remarks I am about to make rely on a large way on comments made by Barrick's Chief Counsel, Patrick Garver, to an internal meeting of Barrick's senior staff. I plagiarized so much from his notes that I thought that I should provide attribution. I did get his consent to borrow so freely. What I have done is take his general comments and used my conversations with CEO's and other participants in the industry to enhance the message with concrete examples that underscore the points I wish to make. What you are about to hear is my personal view – I am not speaking as a representative of any company. With that introduction, now would be a good time to give you the main theme of my talk: The SEC should change its rule making to a more public cooperative approach. If that were to happen the SEC would avoid some of the harm it has been doing to the companies in this sector and the very shareholders it seeks to protect.

Mathematical models have been developed to simulate longwall heading development systems in Australian Longwall Mines. The models developed consider the effect of non concurrent cutting and supporting systems and concurrent cutting and supporting systems. They also consider the impact of operating parameters on each of these systems. Operating parameters that are considered include pillar dimensions, the use of surge cars, bolting time, shuttle car speed and heading advance per cycle. The effect of these parameters is considered with respect to production rates and also panel advance rates.

PT Freeport Indonesia’s Deep Mill Level Zone mine is one of the deepest block cave mines in the world and is in mountainous terrain in West Papua, Indonesia. The mineralization is hosted in a skarn deposit in a structural setting that is complex at the footprint, mine and regional scale. Large seismic events and significant episodes of rapid rock mass deformation are potentially critical geotechnical risks during this ramp-up stage of mining. Understanding the interaction between stress, strain, rock mass strength and geological structures is essential to minimize the hazard and engineer control measures to help ensure the safety of the employees while achieving production targets. This paper discusses how the seismicity and excavation damage have been shaped by the interactions between the mine and geological features, and how this affects strategic mining decisions. Additionally, the paper presents a summary of the mitigation measures used for mining the DMLZ in the safest and most productive way. These include improvements to geotechnical characterization of rock mass and structure, dynamic ground support designs, production scheduling for desirable cave propagation and a seismic monitoring system with re-entry protocols.

In alkaline pulp, galena is depressed by sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (NaCMC), while Cu(II)-activated sphalerite exhibits a high flotability so that satisfied separation can be achieved. In addition to hydrogen bonding, chemical bonding of NaCMC with galena is confirmed by IR; only hydrogen bonding is involved between NaCMC and Cu(II)-activated sphalerite. It is also found that the greater the degree of substitute and polymerization of NaCMC, the stronger the depressive effect of NaCMC and that lower stirring speed favors the depression.

INTRODUCTION Caving Mine Drift Support Design The support of production drifts remains a high-cost item facing the developer or operator of an underground caving mine. Support costs are incurred well in advance of ore production, and there is a strong need to minimize these pre-production commitments of capital. Due to the extensive rock loads that normally develop during the caving process, the support used in caving mines is typically quite heavy and therefore costly. The process of designing this support increasingly makes use of basic tunneling principles, but is hindered by the still-incomplete state of knowledge of rock behavior in caving mines, and high variability of geological conditions in caving orebodies. Caving mines differ from tunnels in that the deformations and rock loads induced are transient and dynamic in occurrence, and are normally large in magnitude, often well in excess of rock mass strength. As opposed to tunnels, caving mine layouts are more intricate, and the methods and effects of construction ordinarily are not as closely monitored. Safety factors in mining tend to be lower and rock masses tend to he weaker. These aspects prevent strict application of tunnel design technology to caving mine drift support, with the result that mine drift supports are commonly designed chiefly on the basis of experience at other mines. Mining procedures at caving mines are evolved in response to site-specific requirements, to the extent that there are really as many caving methods as there are caving mines.

Improved models continue to be produced for the major pits which Increase confidence levels required by Gold Fields management and provide the basis for more accurate long and intermediate term mine planning. Various kriging and non-kriging estimation techniques are used at Gold Fields -Chimney Creek Mine. This paper reviews the modeling histories and, current procedures used to construct these models with particular emphasis on the North Pit deposit.

A laboratory study was conducted to evaluate the effects of various kinetic test protocols on sulfate production, NP depletion and time to acidity. Six test protocols were evaluated including standard humidity cells, non-aerated cells, tall cells, shaken cells, simulated precipitation cells, and NP depletion columns. The study indicates that test protocols which disrupt the oxidizing environment, such as extreme wetting and drying cycles, shaking the cells, or the high addition of acidic water will create an unnatural environment that affect the results. Trickle leach and non-aerated test protocols create an oxidizing environment that more closely represents field conditions and are therefore recommended.
