There is an indication that high-pressure roller milling promotes selective liberation due to preferential breakage along the mineral boundaries. A study was undertaken to compare the degree of liberation obtained by high-pressure roller milling with that of conventional ball milling. Coals with different HGI's were ground in a high-pressure roller mill and a ball mill to produce products with similar size distributions. The products were then subjected to float-sink separations to determine the degree of liberation. Also, the relative cleanabilities were compared by separating the ground products by froth flotation. The results from this study are presented in the paper.

A novel special magnetic separator was developed based on the special properties of precious metal-bearing alloy in highgrade nickel matte. The recovery of Au, Pt, and Pd was 77.79%, 84.79%, and 81.79% respectively at optimum operation conditions of magnetic separator feed of 2.5t/h, pulp density of 45%, and flush water of 1.5t/h, and the recovery significantly improved comparing with normal magnetic separator. Magnetic field simulation of the special magnetic separator indicates that magnetic intensity of 0.6 T can be generated on the surface of magnetic drum, which can strengthen the recovery of heavy alloy that contains precious metals. The alternate strong and weak magnetic field can also make magnetic particles rolling on the surface of drum, which will reduce the generation of magnetic agglomeration to a large extent and decrease the content of impurities in magnetic concentrate.

Metallurgically, the term agglomeration is used to describe processes whose goal is to form balls, briquettes, nodules, flakes, or other sized shaped particles from loose, usually fine, incoherent particles. In practice it includes such varying processes as the briquetting of coal dust and other substances, the balling and induration (heating) of such nonmetallics as cement, fluorspar, lightweight aggregates, etc. It includes such widely used processes as the sintering of nonferrous concentrates, such as those copper, lead, zinc, etc. The agglomeration of specific nonferrous metal concentrates is discussed in detail in the section of this handbook devoted to that particular metal. Agglomeration processes are of particular value to the iron and steel industry where the nature of the primary reduction process, the blast furnace, requires for best results a burden essentially free of fines. This is a change that has taken place since about 1960. Prior to that time many fine unsized ores were fed to the furnace. The development of the pelletizing process gave to the industry a chemically controlled closely sized product that increased the produc¬tion rate and reduced the costs so much that unsized fines are seldom used in modem furnaces. Steel plants produce many fine sized waste products such as fine dust (fine ore coke and gangue) and mill scale. These products, which have a valuable iron content, are usually sin¬tered directly at the plant for reuse. Fine sized ore concentrates are usually pelletized at the mine and shipped as pellets to the steel plant. Common practice in some areas producing natural high grade ores is to screen the ore at the mine to about 3/8 in. The oversize is shipped "as is" and constitutes blast furnace feed. The / in. may be shipped to the steel plant where it may be sintered or otherwise agglomerated. At some mines the fines may be pelletizied prior to shipment. With the development of large ocean ore carriers, and with the transportation of slurried concentrates or fines, a trend has developed of constructing large pelletizing plants or other types of agglomeration plants near large consumption centers (i.e., in the Netherlands or Japan) where ores of many types are brought together, ground if necessary, blended, and agglomerated. As an indication of tonnages of agglomerated materials produced, for iron materials alone (the largest share of the total) production in 1970 in the U.S. was Million gross ton Sinter 40.7 Pellets 43.1 Briquettes, nodules, & others 0.1 Total 83.9 During the 1960s, U.S. production of sinter rose from 40.3 million gross tons in 1961 to a high of 48.7 million in 1964, then settled back to almost the 1961 figure in 1970. Pellet production rose steadily from 14.4 million gross tons in 1961 to the 59.9 figure for 1975. Worldwide, sinter production in 1966 was estimated at 340 million mt (mainly in Europe, Russia, Japan, and the U.S.) and pellet produc¬tion the same year at 64 mt (primarily Canada and the U.S.). World pellet production capacity rose to 200 million tons in 1976.

INTRODUCTION The Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP), commonly known as the Deep Tunnel Project, is the daring and unique concept developed by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRDGC) as a two-phase solution to the problem of waterway pollution and basement flooding due to sewer system backups created by the combined sewer over-flows (CSOs). Phase I, primarily for pollution control, includes the tunnels, shafts, connecting sewers and structures. These Phase I facilities intercept, during wet weather events, the CSOs within the MWRDGC TARP service area. The tunnels and shafts provide temporary storage of the CSOs for subsequent treatment at Water Reclamation Plants (WRP) before discharging into waterways. Ultimately, upon completion of Phase II, the tunnels, located from 45 m(150 ft) to 100 m (330 ft) below ground, will convey the CSOs to reservoirs for storage until WRP capacity is available. Phase II, which includes the reservoirs, pumping facilities, additional tunnels and shafts, has been planned to serve a dual purpose. The reservoirs provide storage of excess flows during wet weather events, those beyond the WRP capacity. Following the wet weather events, the stored flows can be conveyed, at controlled rates, to the WRPs for full treatment. These excess flows previously would have resulted in both overflows into the waterways and eventually backups in the local sewer systems. The storage capacity of the reservoirs also will promote the full utilization of the conveyance capacity of the tunnels and shafts, which in turn results in optimizing the conveyance capacity of the existing sewer systems. Therefore pollution control is further enhanced by allowing for capture of a greater volume of CSOs and greatly minimizing backups in the local sewer systems. The TARP project consists of four systems: O’Hare, Mainstream, Des Plaines, and Calumet, covering a total area of 971 km2 (375 mi2) and serving the City of Chicago and 51neighboring communities as shown in Figure1. With only two contracts left before completion of the Phase I tunnels, the 12.7km (7.9mi) Torrence Avenue leg, to be awarded in 1997, and the 12.4km (7.7mi) Little Calumet leg unfunded as of yet, both part of the Calumet System, the pollution control phase of the project is now 86% complete (Table 1).

When driving a shallow soft ground bore, the appearance of surface craters along the tunnel alinement indicates trouble, particularly when a major highway is intersected. During the excavation of a 3.7 m diam tunnel in Seattle, Washington a chemical grouting program was implemented to stabilize soil conditions sufficiently to allow advancement of the mole without loss of ground. Unanticipated mixed face conditions consisting of saturated running sand and some boulder pockets bedded on top of dense glacial till created excavation difficulties. A discussion of problems and corrective measures is presented.

In response to the Natural Resources Canada “Crush It Challenge,” Corem partnered with the University of British Columbia and led a project to develop and demonstrate the use of high-pressure grinding to replace the workhorse of the industry, wet ball milling. Two plant case studies, a small tonnage gold recovery operation and a large tonnage copper recovery operation, were carried out. Plant circuit performances were compared to pilot plants operated on the same circuit feed setup to represent the novel equipment and flowsheet that was developed to produce separation circuit feed. Numerous obstacles to industrial implementation of high-pressure grinding in this role which were recognized at the outset of the work were successfully addressed. In both cases, comminution equipment energy savings alone and final stage total circuit energy savings exceeded 60% and 50%, respectively. Downstream mineral separation performance was the same or better.

The West German Ruhrkohle AG and the engineering company BEDIA have developed an emission control system for diesel engines that is suitable for use in underground coal mining, consisting of a granular catalytic converter and a dry cooling system. Its first ever application was to a diesel mining locomotive. In the catalytic converter the exhaust gases pass over porous, platinum-covered ceramic balls in a double tube, oxidizing CO to CO2. Simultaneously, soot particles in the gases are subjected to afterburning. Laboratory tests carried out by BEDIA and at Aachen University of Technology showed that there was a reduction of over 80% in the CO content of the exhaust gases and over 30% in soot emission. The dry cooling system fulfills all the requirements demanded of exhaust cooling underground and does not have the disadvantages of conventional systems. It needs little maintenance, and it is light and compact. The most important components are a waterjacketed exhaust manifold, a tube and shell heat exchanger, a new type of flame arrestor in a stacked crimped ribbon design and a Venturi diluter. The system has its own thermostatically-controlled cooling circuit to keep the exhaust temperature between 120° C and 150° C, thus effectively preventing the tubes becoming blocked up.

Excellent underground industrial sites and warehouse facilities have been constructed in Europe and at several locations in the United States. Many quarry and mine operators are considering, or should consider, the possibilities of the development of their mineral properties in such a manner as to make underground space that is suitable for a secondary industrial use. Before proceeding with mine or quarry development, the operator should answer the following questions: 1) Is there a need for underground industrial space in your geographical area? 2) Is your deposit suitable for development of space for industrial usage? 3) If the deposit is suitable, what methods of development can be used? 4) What are the comparative economics of the different methods of space development? An honest analysis of the first two questions may eliminate the need for proceeding to the third. Affirmative answers to questions 1 and 2 should be followed by the engineering and economic studies required in response to questions 3 and 4.

INTRODUCTION For many years, in Europe and in North America, pre-formed metallic and concrete segmental linings in tunnels have been used extensively as temporary and permanent ground support systems. In the United Kingdom the use of cast iron as a means of ground support in mining shafts dates from the first decade of the 19th century. Although at that time wood tubbing was extensively employed, cast iron was used in shafts at Wallsend and Percy Main collieries in the North East of England. The original form of cast iron tubbing consisted of cylinders which were lowered bodily into the pit and were built from the bottom up, but subsequently they were subdivided into segments which involved the making of vertical as well as horizontal joints. Principally, the practice of providing immediate pre-formed support developed because of the incompetent state of the surrounding ground and, although this still remains the over-riding consideration nowadays, several other factors are examined before finally deciding what type of lining to use. Other branches of sub-terranean technology such as tunnel thrusting or immersed tubes (both of which involve pre-formed linings) can provide alternative solutions to problems hitherto thought better solved by bored tunnelling methods. However, this paper will confine itself to those linings developed for the more traditional tunnelling methods. Usually the shape of segmentally lined tunnels is circular because this profile is the most suitable for bad ground and many tunnelling machines. Significant resources grading less than about 1 % nickel occur in magmatic sulfide deposits of two types. In the Mt. Keith type, extensive zones of disseminated nickel sulfides occur in the central portions of certain synvolcanic dunite-peridotite sills of komatiitic affinity in Archean greens tone terranes. In the Duluth type, disseminated copper-nickel sulfides occur near the basal margins of intrusions of flood basaltic affinity associated with intracontinental rifting. In both types, the parent magmas became saturated with sulfide following the onset of fractional crystallization and the separation of the immiscible sulfide melt was accompanied by the precipitation of a relatively large proportion of silicates. The abundant silicate crystals impeded the coalescense and accumulation of the sulfide droplets with the resulting formation of large but low grade deposits.

"The purpose of this paper is to review the most effective methods of reducing chloride transfer and chloride removal in the solution extraction and electrowinning (SX/EW) process. Elevated chlorides in electrolyte have various negative effects including a reduction in current efficiency, increased handling costs at rod plants and smelters, increased anode corrosion, cobalt losses due to increased electrolyte bleed, degradation of HDPE piping, and increased corrosion in the SX/EW plants. Historical controls that Sierrita has used to control chloride transfer, in order of effectiveness, have been chloride gasification at the EW that is directly correlated to amperage and chloride concentration in electrolyte, wash stage bleed and efficiency, width and velocity of aqueous bands, and electrolyte bleeds. Maintaining high bleed rates and high amperage settings has been a challenge with decreasing pregnant leach solution (PLS) grades, so keeping chlorides out of the electrolyte has become imperative. The effectiveness of reducing aqueous entrainment, optimizing wash stage efficiencies, and improving organic quality to reduce the transfer of chlorides to the electrolyte are illustrated in this study. INTRODUCTION The transfer of impurities from PLS feed streams to electrolyte in the Copper Solution Extraction process is a very common problem and is the reason that the wash stage exists in most SX operations. The main impurities affecting the SX process are iron, chloride, nitrate, and manganese. Elevated chlorides in the electrolyte have various negative effects including reduced current efficiency, increased handling costs at rod plants and smelters, increased anode corrosion, increased cobalt losses due to increased electrolyte bleed, degradation of HDPE piping, and increased corrosion in the SX/EW plants. Freeport-McMoRan Sierrita Hydromet is unique in that a high-chloride byproduct stream from the molybdenum process is pumped into the SX raffinate solution pond. This byproduct steam accounts for the majority of chloride introduced to the circuit, and over the years has built up to a point where 4000ppm chloride is consistently in the PLS feed to the SX. Concentrations of chloride over 70 ppm in electrolyte will result in downgraded cathode, so it is important to limit chloride carryover from SX as much as possible. Historically, Sierrita has been able to manage chloride levels with reactive techniques including increasing electrolyte bleeds and rectifier amps. Decreasing copper in PLS has made high amps harder to maintain, and increasing bleed rates have a direct impact on production goals."

Your interesting and well-written paper brings up the issue of the purpose or use of a mineral property appraisal, specifically the value of these evaluations when the quality and quantity of the mineral resource to be exploited have not been thoroughly investigated. I am not a practicing professional in regards to valuation of limestone investment opportunities. I simply wish to make a few generic observations about the appraisal process in order to stimulate meaningful thinking by appraisal professionals whose reports may be reviewed by professional investors and "laypersons" alike. It is my contention that the analysis given in your paper is very thorough, considering the data that was made available to you. But I would not like to be the person responsible for investment decision making without having a feel for the risk involved. Therefore, the reviewer must classify this type of analysis as relatively "subjective" because they have not received an indication of the inherent risk involved in exploiting a mineral resource. This risk can best be quantified by using probabilistic methods in conjunction with the quality and quantity of the mineral to be produced. Most appraisals passively ignore this problem. Specifically, you have accurately identified the various costs and values entering the economic appraisal process. These can usually be quantified with a great deal more certainty than the capability of the resource to provide 25 years of quality material. Also, in Cases A (West Virginia)and B (Alabama), you are fortunate enough to have previous operations data. What if there had never been production from these properties? How does a potential mineral property investor evaluate the resource capability to meet various projected financial outcomes without spending a good deal of up-front capital to drill and delineate enough quality resources for a 20-plus year operation. These questions pose a substantial risk to any potential mineral investor. Only probabilistic methods should be used to quantify this type of problem, short of drilling and metallurgical testing. The underground fire areas are formed as a result of failure of an active fire extinguishing in mines. Such areas bring about a fire hazard for the work safety and for the mining operations. For liquidation of fire areas it is necessary to create conditions under which a possibly small amount of air is flowing to the fire. To achieve this end, isolation methods are used which consist in erection of full stoppings of various types, sealing practically the fire areas. These methods usually fail in oases when the coal seam is thick and the fire area is situated between the intake shaft and the outtake shaft in which a high-pressure fan is in operation. In such oases ventilation methods based on the balance of aerodynamic potentials in fire areas are to be used. For a very long time the isolation and ventilation methods have been developed in the world mining, No sooner than since 1980 the aerodynamic potential has been used in ventilation methods [1,2,6]. So far, the aerodynamic potential was called in different ways and was determined by different formulae which gave its numerical values more or less approximative. Nevertheless, even in situations featuring by a lack of sufficient theoretical bases of the aerodynamic potential the ventilation methods brought considerable profits in the field of safety in mines and of economics in mine ventilation [1-6,9,10]. The increase in the depth of underground mines and their equipment with expensive machines (apparatus) brought about that the Central Mining Institute at Katowice undertook research works which are crowned by the theory of the aerodynamic potential in mine ventilation networks [7]. The use of this theory in the mentioned ventilation methods will increase their effectiveness. Since the theory will be published in the III rd quarter of this year, we cite in the present paper the formulae and relations associated with this theory which are indispensable to present the balance of aerodynamic potentials in the fire areas in their control by ventilation methods.

A study has been undertaken on two 1.12 m diameter industrial booster fans operating under different blade settings powered by a 1200 rpm motor at the Missouri University of Science and Technology. The fans total pressure varies up to 1kPa forcingup to 25 m3/s through the workings. A pressure-quantity survey has been conducted inby and outby the booster fans with different blade settings. The study uses a variable speed drive (VFD) to determine the effect of rotational frequency on the system. The pressure drop across the bulkheads has been monitored during the experiments. The fans were operated with various blade settings to determine the optimal scenario that maintains the maximum airflow quantity and the lowest power demand at a particular ventilation station. Five scenarios were conducted with different blade setting and mostly with two different speeds. The experimental results show that alteration of fans? speeds by use of a VFD unit can reduce power consumption while maintaining airflow requirements. With the flow rate forced through the mine by the surface fan the blade settings 4 and 5 were determined as possible alternative for the mine ventilation system. In scenario 4, the airflow at the particular ventilation station for a number of speeds is over 20m3/s. The power consumption at 1080 rpm was measured to be 20.1 kW compared to 25.5 kW at 1200 rpm. The operating cost would be significantly less at lower speeds. Scenario 5 is the alternative making use of both booster fans and the main fan in series that meets the minimum airflow requirement at the particular ventilation station along with minimum power consumption. Reducing both booster fans speeds to 1054 rpm results in power consumption of both together dropping to 11.8 kW. Therefore blade setting 5 using two booster fans was determined to be the optimal setting. Separately it was determined that the combination with use of only one booster fan, the West booster fan, running in series with the main fan is the overall optimal scenario. The power consumption of the West booster fan was calculated to be 8.8 kW at 860 rpm with the minimum airflow requirement being met. Computational fluid dynamics is used for analyzing three dimensional flow structures in time domain and calculating the corresponding unsteady pressure fluctuations. The sliding and dynamic mesh techniques were used to study the unsteady flow interaction arising due to the rotation of the fan blades. The numerical predictions of the variables in the form of velocity vectors and contour plots detailing the flow characteristics are then analyzed according to the known physical situation and existing experimental data.

Lithoprobe is a collaborative, multidisciplinary research project which is providing new insights into the tectonic evolution of the North American continent through its work within ten study areas across Canada. For the mining industry, such results provide a well-constrained regional framework and better understanding of tectonic processes which lead to the development of ore deposits. In mining camps, seismic reflection methods have proven effective in imaging shallow to moderately dipping litho logic contacts as well as structural features, and in some cases have been used for the direct detection of ore bodies. Here, short case histories are provided for the Abitibi greenstone belt (VMS deposits) in Quebec and the Thompson nickel belt in Manitoba.

Environmental self-monitoring is one of the advanced approaches for industrial sustainability programs. Organization for Economy Cooperation and Development (OECD) defines self-monitoring as ?the system of organizational and technical measures put in place and financed by [the] regulated subject? in order to ensure their compliance with regulatory requirements?1. Self-monitoring is beneficial for industrial operators, communities, and governments. Industrial companies use self-monitoring as a central element of their compliance management that allows them to fulfill their duties, obligations, and to avoid citations. When industries control their emissions and ensure workers are not exposed above the regulated limits, communities are better. It is impossible for an EPA, OSHA, or MSHA inspectors to be close to every emission source or workplace full-time. It is much more effective for industries to self-monitor, under due supervision. Occupational conditions are a very important part of industry and health and safety self-monitoring should be highly prioritized. In this paper we will research the regulatory basis and best practice of occupational self-monitoring. We will show that not only is self-monitoring a vital element of an occupational health & safety management system, but that you need a management system for affective monitoring.

INTRODUCTION In 1973, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) initiated a 10-year program of research on tunneling technology for future highways as a part of a larger Department of Transportation effort on tunnels. The objectives of the FHWA program are to: improve tunnel design technology, reduce costs, minimize adverse environmental impact due to construction, increase the rate of construction, and assure the maintenance of a safe and attractive tunnel environment. The program is divided into four research tasks designed to solve tunneling problems identified by the engineering and field offices of the FHWA. These tasks are as follows: 1. Cut-and-Cover Tunneling 2. Site Investigations 3. Ground Movements - Prediction and Control 4. Highway Environmental Criteria for Tunnels In order to provide input into Tasks 2 and 3, the FHWA is sponsoring an investigation and testing program by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation to instrument and monitor two sites in the second bore of the Eisenhower Memorial Tunnel located on Interstate Highway 70 at Loveland Pass approximately 97 km (60 miles) west of Denver, Colorado. The tunnel will be approximately 14.0 m (46 ft) in diameter when excavated. Since the discoveries of favorable deposits are becoming increasingly difficult, mining operations shift to lower grade and deeper deposits. The viability of these operations is sensitive to many factors, such as commodity prices and operating costs. Given that a mining corporation has no power to set prices, the focus is directed on minimizing the operating costs. Underground mining operations require a network infrastructure, including shaft, ramps, declines, levels, cross-cuts, raises, winzes, and adit. The design of this network is a costly process. As such, it has a significant potential to reduce development and haulage costs. Furthermore, network design is a continuous process along with development, production, and maintenance throughout mine life. Under the constraints of the turning radius, the gradient, and the obstacle avoidance for haulage network of underground mines, this paper first demonstrates network design and optimization approaches using Dubins path combined with the Hierarchical Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (HDBSCAN) algorithm. A threshold-based model is developed, providing viable solutions to the network design when the number of declines is high. Furthermore, a three-dimensional Rapid-exploring Random Tree (RRT) algorithm combined with Dubins path is employed as a heuristic solver for obstacle avoidance purposes in the network. Various case studies are conducted to show the applicability of the proposed methods.

For many years excavations were made in rock exclusively by conventional blasting methods, and without concern for damage to the rock surfaces which remained after the excavation was completed. Recently, however, there is an increasing awareness for the importance of making rock excavations with as little damage as possible to the remaining rock surfaces; consequently, several revolutionary new precision blasting techniques have been developed during the past few years. These techniques, variously known as cushion, smooth- wall, perimeter, pre-shear, and pre-split blasting, basically involve the creation of a fracture plane in the rock between a series of blasted holes. The variations in each of these techniques are largely due to the differences in hole diameters, hole spacings, methods of charging, and sequence of blasting used to achieve certain specific results. The development of these precision blasting techniques was initiated by Canadian Industries Limited in 1953 at the time the Sir Adam Beck No. 2 Hydro-electric Project was under construction by the Hydro-Electric Power Commission of Ontario. Since then, these techniques have been somewhat advanced, and they have been applied with varying degrees of success to a number of projects. These projects include railroad and high- way cuts, dam spillway channel excavations, canal excavations, tunnel driving, shaft sinking, and other underground applications.
