Flexible Dilatometer Test (FDT) is one of the in-situ test methods for determining the deformational characteristics of rock masses. In this study, several dilatometer tests have been conducted in different geotechnical phases of site investigations by means of two types of FDTs. The purpose of this paper is comparison of the performance of these two types of dilatometers and analysis of the differences in the results of the tests.

"Keep calm and carry on mining. That has long been the conventional wisdom in the mining industry, a largely cyclical one that has weathered roller-coaster booms and busts. But in the years from 2002 to 2016, an unprecedented steep rise in commodities prices that lasted a decade and then took a sharp turn downward had made it hard for gold and silver miners to stay the course.“The last 15 years highlighted some of the structural and inherent challenges that our industry has, from product price uncertainty to long lead times to the capital intensity of our business,” said Mitchell Krebs, president and chief executive officer of Coeur Mining, who was the luncheon speaker at the American Exploration & Mining Association’s 122nd Annual Meeting held Dec. 5-9, 2016, in Reno, NV.Looking back, Krebs said, “We were given this enormous gift of a commodities super cycle, and the industry kind of blew the opportunity.” While gold prices rose 319 percent and silver prices rose more than 200 percent over the 2002 to 2016 period, the XAU index of 30 gold and silver mining companies’ stock prices went up by only 20 percent.Entering 2016, precious-metals prices have made a comeback, with gold rallying strongly from a six-year low at the start of the year. This time, the industry is ready. Companies are leaner and meaner, with lower costs, reduced debt and an increased focus on higher grades and quality ounces. Although opportunities were missed in the past, the industry has got its act together and is now well positioned to take advantage of a price upswing and even to show profits when prices fall, as they did in August 2016, pushed down by a strong dollar."

INTRODUCTION Large areas of the United States coal reserves have been undermined by room-and-pillar mining over the past century. These abandoned mines generally cause subsidence of the ground surface many decades after mining. Reports from England (1) where there is a longer history of room-and-pillar mining indicate that mines abandoned two centuries ago may still be causing subsidence, and causing surface destruction to urban areas or farm lands that have been developed in the interim. The devastation wrought by subsidence, both in terms of property loss and societal disruption is enormous. The authors discuss here the methods by which subsidence in abandoned mines may be controlled. Two distinctly different subsidence control technologies have been developed in the U.S. for abandoned coal mines. These are referred to as (1) Point Sup- port methods, and (2) Areal Backfilling. As the names imply, point support methods are used to protect individual structures, or even individual foundation elements of structures, whereas areas backfilling techniques may be applied to protect entire neighborhoods or urban districts hundreds of acres in extent. Both point support methods and areal backfilling have specific sub-categories of techniques that may be applied under different conditions as appropriate. POINT SUPPORT METHODS Point support methods are characteristically employed by civil engineers chartered with the design of a new structure or the protection of an existing structure. The subsidence control measures are only a part of a larger project, the safety of which must be assured to a degree of near certainty. The costs of point support methods involve a large number of bore-holes and the use of expensive materials in relatively small quantities. There exist several dozen point support methods, which operate either to support the underground cavities, controlling subsidence, or to isolate the structure from the effects of subsidence if it should occur. The latter methods usually involve deep foundations through the mine opening supporting the structure on the underlying strata. Our concern will be with the former method to support underground cavities to prevent subsidence. Gravel Columns and Associated Methods Gravel columns may be placed in the mine opening using the methods shown in [Figure 1]. Boreholes are drilled through the mine strata, and gravel poured down the borehole to form a pile on the mine floor. When the tip of the pile contacts the mine roof, it is rodded down to spread the pile, and permit additional gravel to be placed. The objective is to place as much gravel as possible in the mine opening, and to achieve firm contact with the mine roof. The gravel pile acts to reduce subsidence by three mechanisms. The filling of a significant fraction of the open mine volume reduces the amount of potential subsidence simply by killing open volume within the mine. In effect, the extraction ratio has been reduced by introducing the volume of gravel. The toe of the gravel pile abuts against nearby pillars, providing lateral support and protection against pillar deterioration. In effect, the height of the pillars has been slightly reduced by burying their lower portions. Finally, some direct support is provided to the roof strata, reducing the roof span and enhancing stability. The gravel column method may be used in a variety of applications, and with materials other than gravel. For example, gravel columns may be placed in a close line around the perimeter of the building to form a continuous gravel wall. The interior of the site may then be completely filled with sand, slurry or other material. Alternatively, a lean concrete may be used in place of gravel, so that the piles achieve significant structural capacity. The grout column, shown in [Figure 2], begins with the installation of a conventional gravel column which is placed around a grout pipe that extends through the borehole into the mine opening. When the gravel column is in place, portland cement grout is injected in stages. At each stage, sufficient grout is injected to fill the interstices in the gravel to build a column perhaps two meters in diameter and a meter tall. Detailed stratigraphic studies of the overburden at North Carolina Phosphate Corporation new South Creek Mine have delineated several aquifers and acquicludes within the 30-meter-thick overburden section of late Pleistocene sands and clayey sands. A major aquifer occurs in the 10-meter-thick sequence of shelly sands of the early Pleistocene Croatan Formation. The water-charged Croatan sands thicken into a paleodrainage surface on top of the Pliocene Yorktown Formation, a major aquiclude. A three-phase dewatering program is projected: 1) improve surface drainage around mine perimeter to reduce both flowage into the pit and rainfall recharge; 2) use a wellpoint system to dewater the upper 8 meters; and 3) use recharge wells along the axis of the paleo- drainage to dewater the overburden below 8 meters.

INTRODUCTION A current need of the phosphate industry is the development of process technology for treatment of high carbonate content ore. About 75 to 80 percent of the world phosphate reserves (1) are associated with carbonate gangue, which is not amenable to treatment by the existing techniques. Numerous laboratory and pilot plant studies have been devoted to carbonate-phosphate separation. Different techniques were involved (washing, sieving, attrition, flotation, calcination, and leaching). For technical and economical considerations, flotation appears to be an efficient process for this problem. Separation of carbonates (calcite and dolomite) from igneous phosphate is applied in industrial plants in Brazil, Finland, and South Africa. But, for sedimentary phosphate, no industrial realization exists at this time, with the possible exception of some plants in China. The main problems with sedimentary phosphates are: • high substitution by CO3-2 and F- for P04 -3 in the apatite lattice. • larger surface area of the phosphate particles because their surface is porous and irregular. • tendency of sedimentary minerals to produce more slimes in conditioning than the crystalline minerals, hence, larger dosages of collectors are required for sedimentary minerals. Investigations reported in the literature indicate that most processes developed for sedimentary carbonate-phosphate separation involved inverse flotation of carbonates using fatty acids as collectors (2), (3) associated with phosphoric acid (4), monosodium phosphate (5), F- (6), or SiF6 -2 (7) as phosphate depressants. Later investigations, conducted by A. Henchiri and G. Baudet (8), (9), (10), (11), (12), (13) in the BRGM technology department, of phosphoric esters revealed that these reagents are selective collectors for carbonate-phosphate separation. The above investigators developed a process which used phosphoric esters to collect carbonate minerals and sulfuric acid or sodium fluorosilicate as depressants for phosphate. Extensive comparative tests for different processes on the same phosphate sample show that the process developed at BRGM is one of the most promising methods proposed for sedimentary phosphate-carbonate separation. It should be pointed out, however, that phosphoric esters make abundant froths. The handling of these excessive froths will be a problem in an industrial-scale plant. This paper outlines test work performed in order to optimize and to improve the efficiency of the flotation process on a sedimentary phosphate ore selected from the Sra Ouertane orebody. The Sra Ouertane flotation process, illustrated on Figure 1, first removes carbonate minerals by inverse flotation and then recovers phosphate as a froth product, leaving quartz as a cell product.

A thorough geological engineering investigation is required before surface lands overlying abandoned underground mines can be safely recommended as building sites. The major problems confronting the geological engineer are assembling accurate geologic and mining information and developing an accurate rock mechanics model of the situation. A successful investigation requires a combination of technical expertise in rock mechanics and engineering geology tempered with practical engineering judgment. The results of a good study are not always favorable to the prospective builder.

Barrick Goldstrike Mines, Inc. Betze-Post open pit operations, located in northeastern Nevada, have experienced slope instability attributed to the presence of generally weak rock mass conditions, local adverse structural geology and perched groundwater. Ground movements are monitored with acombination of optical survey, extensometers, inclinometers, and time domain reflectometry (TDR).The slope monitoring system at Goldstrike includes two robotics theodolites, which provide real-time coverage for all highwall areas. Survey instruments are housed in specially designed climate controlled shelters in locations where all slopes can be observed. A “remote” computer housed with each theodolite collects data. The “base” computer, located in the mine offices, is used to access data from the remote computers via radio modem.

Permanent ventilation controls such as stoppings, overcasts, and undercasts for use in coal mines are required to meet MSHA’s safety standards for fire endurance and flexural strength. Due to technological advances in materials and their design for use as ventilation controls, an engineering program was established to evaluate newer or “nontraditional” ventilation controls. The program is intended to assist manufacturers, enforcement personnel and mine operators in determining if “nontraditional” ventilation controls, for example plastic membrane construction and lightweight block, meet the prescribed safety standards. The program is presented with a description of required tests and examples of products evaluated.

A computer code for ecological risk assessment (ERA), AQUARISK, has been developed and applied to evaluate the likelihood of biotic detriment due to exposure to acid rock drainage (ARD) from the Burkunga mine site in Australia Stream water quality monitoring data were used for the assessment and were compared with a) national water quality guidelines, b) literature derived ecotoxicology data and c) biological monitoring data. With bioavailability calculations, the code predicted that, for metals exceeding the guidelines, 44% of macroinvertebrate species above the mine and 100% below the mine would be adversely affected by the metals in the stream. This compares reasonably and conservatively with biological monitoring that showed observed reductions of 41% and 85% of species respectively at each site. Using literature data for macroinvertebrates to predict impact produced similar estimates to using data for all taxa. Use of speciation modeling also lessened the degree of reduction in the median water metal concentrations required to achieve acceptable impact (measured either by exceedence of criteria or by species likely to be affected) by a factor of 75%. This result implies significant economic and management benefits in relation to remedial engineering or water treatment options for sites.

Through the remainder of this century, world consumption of fluorine per ton of primary aluminum produced will continue to be substantially reduced. Growth of the primary industry will offset some of the unit consumption, but demand for new fluorine sources will decline sharply. Continued application of dry fume scrubbing systems will be the most significant factor in reducing demand.

Over 10 percent of the United States of America or 41 percent of the Federal lands is managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) as Public Lands. The mission is to manage the use of these lands and their resources. The way in which BLM carries out its mission is being refocused under the concepts of biodiversity and ecosystem-based management for the benefit of various human needs including environmental, social and economic values. The Bureau is developing methods to integrate the renewable and non-renewable resources programs into the concepts of biodiversity and ecosystem-based management. Exploration, development and extraction of energy or mineral resources on Public Lands are affected. The statements that following the next few pages are my personal views as a scientist (economic geologist -mining technologist) who is and has been involved for the last twenty years in the multiple-use management of Public Lands. They are not necessarily the position of the Bureau of Land Management, although much of the information on which I base my views comes from my experience with the BLM. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) manages over 10 percent of the United States (270 million acres or 108 million hectares) which is 41 percent of the Federal Lands. Lands managed by BLM are known as Public Lands as opposed to the National Forest Lands which are Federal Land Policy and Management Act (FLPMA) of 1976 which in Sec. 102 states ??that it is the policy of the United States (7) ?that management be on the basis of multiple use and sustained yield??, the mission of the BLM is rapidly refocused under the concepts of biodiversity, ecosystems, and ecosystems-based management for the benefit of the environment, human needs and socio-economic values.

Luzenac is a town in the Pyrenees of Southern France -and the home of Talc de Luzenac, RTZ's first talc acquisition. The Luzenac Group is the largest talc producer in the world.

Density tracers are a useful diagnostic tool for evaluating the separation efficiency of dense medium circuits. Unfortunately, the full capabilities of density tracers are often not realized in practice due to problems that occur during the retrieval step. To overcome this problem, an electronic monitoring system has been developed to automatically identify and count the tracers as they pass through a cleaning circuit. This technique, which relies on recent breakthroughs in transponder technology, improves the reliability of tracer data by eliminating statistical errors associated with lost tracers. Field tests showed that very accurate counts (>98%) of the transponder-based tracers could be achieved in full-scale trials. In addition, this simple system makes it possible for efficiency tests to be performed very rapidly by a single person in an extremely cost-efficient manner.

INTRODUCTION This paper is the outgrowth of work done by the authors to prepare the seismic design criteria for underground structures on the Southern California Rapid Transit District (SCRTD) Metro Rail Project. It is a follow-on to a similar paper presented at the October, 1984, ASCE National Convention (17). For design, the earthquake-induced distortions recommended herein are to be added to the normal static loading conditions for the underground structure. This design approach has been used by 18 section designers on the SCRTD Project. Preliminary results from two- and three-dimensional finite element solutions have partially verified the approach. Areas where additional research is needed for special cases are identified. EFFECTS OF EARTHQUAKE The effects of earthquakes on underground structures may be broadly grouped into two general classes -shaking and faulting. In response to earthquake motion of bedrock (shaking) , the soil transmits energy by waves. Seismologists identify various types of earthquake waves, but underground engineers are generally interested in the effects of transverse shear waves which produce a displacement of the ground transverse to the axis of wave propagation. The purpose of developing this system is to monitor the operating status of the fully mechanized mining system in order to raise it's reliability. The completely mechanized coal mining system is a complex dynamic system, involving many sub-systems. It is the key of the mining process as well as a connected system composed of each working procedure. Any hitch in breaking, loading or transporting will interrupt the mining process. The analyses of the operating data has proved that the reasons causing the interruption of the extracting processes mainly come from the inner of coal face. Hence, after the installation of the MINOS system in England, the delays of belt conveyor sub-system were reduced. But the production increment was not as much as expected.

Artificial intelligence research has produced several tools for commercial application. Some of the techniques that are widely used today include neural networks, fuzzy logic and expert systems. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are excellent predictive, pattern recognition and data analysis tools. In the mining industry, ANN techniques are being used commercially for real-time process-control applications. Modeling of spatial data, ore-reserve estimation, tunnel design, long wall-stability prediction and geologic roof classification are additional applications in which neural networks have been applied successfully. In this study, a standard back propagation algorithm was used to train a series of neural networks for a real-world predictive task. After training and optimizing the neural network architecture, the performance of the network is measured on an independent validation set. Results indicate a mean error of less than 1 % between the actual and predicted values. A neural network model was developed for learning the spatial continuity of a mineral field and, consequently, for predicting sulfur values for given coordinates. The neural network not only performed satisfactorily, but in some cases performed even better than the kriging model.

Geologically and commercially, the term diatomite is applied to the nearly pure sedimentarv accumulation of diatom frustules- the microscopic skeletons of unicellular aquatic algae belonging to the class of golden brown algae, bacillariophyceae. The sediments are fine-grained, siliceous, and consist primarily of amorphous opaline silica with only minor amounts of organic residue, secondary minerals, and co-deposited non-diatomaceous or crystalline clastic debris. In the geological sense, the name diatomite implies sedimentary accumulations that have reached appreciable thickness and when thick enough, such accumulations consequently may have possible commercial potential. Although the term diatomite is popularly and inappropriately applied to any sediment in which there is an abundance of diatom frustules, alternative terminology is more correctly employed to describe the less pure diatomaceous sediments, for example: clay-bearing diatomite or diatom-bearing clay. Synonyms in current usage include diatomaceous earth and kieselghur. More antiquated and obsolete terminology includes tripoli-powder, tripolite, and infusorial earth. Worldwide, diatomites occur within Tertiary to Recent lacus- trine and marine sedimentary facies. Although diatomite is wide- spread throughout the world, deposits that contain high purity, commercially versatile ore are uncommon. Physical properties of the diatom and of processed diatomite that provide unique commercial value in a broad spectrum of market end-uses include ornate fine structure, low bulk density, and high porosity and surface area. Properties of equal importance are mild abrasiveness, high absorptive capacity, insulating ability, relative inertness, and high brightness. End-use markets are diverse and range from insulating brick and absorbents through quality sensitive filter aids and premium quality functional fillers. Notwithstanding both the economic attractiveness of the specialty markets and the commercial versatility of the high purity deposits, deposits of lesser purity are mined in nearly all parts of the world for less demanding uses. Mining costs are minimized through open pit quarrying, but in Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America underground mining methods are also employed. Blasting is not required because diatomite is soft and easily broken loose with mechanized equipment. Following gentle crushing, the ore is dried, milled, and processed into one of three broad categories of products: naturally milled, straight calcined, and flux calcined grades. Each of these principal categories is further subdivided into additional grades through particle size adjustment of the powders. Agglomeration of particles, alteration of fine structure, and color change are achieved through calcination. Flux calcination further accentuates these changes. Production throughout the world is dominated by the United States, followed by Romania, the former Soviet republics, and France. Other major producers include Spain, Mexico, Iceland, Korea, Japan, and Germany. Denmark is a major producer of Moler earth products, which consist of a diatomite-clay mixture. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND The first industrial use of diatomite can be traced back some 2000 years to the Greeks and to the use of diatomaceous earth as a component in lightweight building brick and in ceramic pottery. It was not until the mid-1800s, however, that the unique properties of diatomite were first recognized and the market end-uses explored and developed. One of the most important of the early uses followed the development of dynamite by Alfred Nobel in the mid-1860s, whereupon diatomite was used as a component of the explosive to improve stability and safety. Other early uses included low temperature insulating and refractory bricks and as a component in insulating and fireproofing construction panels. During the 1920s, processing technology underwent a very rapid evolution with the development of calcination, flux calcination, and air classification technologies. Through these technologies, innumerable different size and grade classifications could be made for market applications and for rapidly diversified end- uses. Today, the application of processed diatomite for filter aid is the largest of the quality sensitive end-uses. Specific filtration uses include the clarification of beer, wine and liquor, vegetable oil, syrup and sugar, pharmaceuticals, and swimming pool water, to name a few. As a functional filler and extender, processed diatomite is ideally suited for application in paint, rubber, and plastic formulations. Other filler applications include use as an anti-blocking agent in plastic film, anti-caking agent for fertilizer, thermal insulating material, catalyst carrier, polish, abrasive, pesticide and fertilizer carrier, and chromatographic supports. Throughout much of the world diatomite is still used as a component of insulating brick and as an absorbent.

"Due to new technological developments, automatic sensor based sorting has made progress within industrial minerals, precious metals, diamond, and coal mining in recent years (Lessard et. al. 2016). In order to re-introduce the technology to other mining sectors, this research discusses its application to iron, manganese, and zinc ores through test works performed by the authors. These test works were performed using Dual Energy X-ray Transmission (DE-XRT) sensor technology. In each case, pre-concentrations of the ore were created demonstrating the possibility to reduce waste material, energy costs, and water consumption while improving product quality of the ores. INTRODUCTION Sorting of mining ores is as old as mining itself (Salter, 1991). Sensor based sorting applications in coal mining began as early as the late 19th century (Louis 1928). New sensor technologies were developed and implemented sequentially for uranium, nickel, coal, and gold mining (Refining, 1949, Rose et al, 1950, Bloomfield et al, 1966, Clayton et al, 1987, Robben and Mosser, 2014). While these sensor technologies were developed decades ago, computational capacity to keep pace with the vast amount of information required utilizing the sensor technology did not arrive until recently (Lessard et. al., 2016). The sensor based sorting (SBS) process was effectively described by Salter and Wyatt in Minerals Engineering in 1991, and Wotruba and Harbeck in 2010 in the Ullmann’s Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry under Sensor Based Sorting. Both descriptions include the following key steps: 1. Presentation of the material or particles. 2. Examination or detection of the material or particles. 3. Processing or analysis of the data generated. 4. Physical separation of the material or particles by external means. Effective presentation of the material or particles is achieved when the sensor is capable of identifying each particle individually. This step requires that each fragment of the material be isolated, and it often involves acceleration of the material fragments by chute or mechanical means, as well as the spreading of particles by vibratory feeders (Salter and Wyatt, 1991, and Wotruba and Harbeck, 2010). The isolated particles typically are conveyed into an area wherein they are subjected to electromagnetic irradiation (except in cases of some radioactive ores), either in the form of x-ray, visible light, infrared, or other energies. A wide range of applications for sensor based sorting exists in the literature. The majority of applications fall into one of two camps, (1) pre-concentration of mineral ores, or (2) characterization of the material during processing (Buxton and Benndorf 2013). While there is much to be gained from in-line material characterization and the resulting control both of quality and processing, this article focuses primarily on the camp of pre-concentration of mineral ores."

Silver contained in zinc calcines undergoes several phase changes as it proceeds through the leaching circuit of a roast-leach-electrowin zinc plant. In this study, the flotation response of silver, from leach residues prepared under a variety of carefully controlled operating conditions in the pilot plant has been examined. Flotation of neutral leach residue is shown to be technically viable and to merit consideration for those plants without a high-acid leach circuit, but having significant silver values in the feed. Residue leach conditions must be kept slightly acidic to promote the formation of Ag2S, (AgCu) 2S and Ag2S rims on residual unroasted sphalerite, while simultaneously avoiding the hydrolysis of soluble iron, which depresses silver recovery and grade. Factors to be considered during integration of a flotation process into an electrolytic zinc plant are discussed.
