Recent ore pass failures have underlined the need for improved designs, standards, structural monitoring methods and better hang-up prevention and removal techniques. Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are investigating methods to improve safety during the transport of ore in ore passes. Design criteria and hang-up prevention and remediation strategies involve studies of the effects of static and dynamic ore and waste-rock loads on chutes, walls, gates and support structures. Particle flow analysis methods were used to simulate the response of various ore pass designs to a wide range of ore loading conditions. A full-scale mockup of actual ore pass and chute assemblies was duplicated and tested for load response. This paper reviews the fundamental concepts involved in the development, application and validation of ground movement predic¬tion methods developed by Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (VPI&SU) over the past 12 years. Prediction techniques have included empirical or semi-empirical methods, such as the profile function, influence function and zone area methods, as well as numerical methods, based on a finite element formulation which utilizes field subsidence data. The former techniques have been integrated in the Surface Deformation Prediction System (SDPS) software package for personal computers, which allows for the calculation of any component of ground movement in any direction. Comparisons between measured and predicted subsidence and strain values are presented for a selection of case studies, which demonstrate the applicability, accuracy and regional validity of these methods for predicting surface deformations due to underground mining.

R. Michael Craig Mr. Juvkam-Wold's article is a timely and much needed presentation of the method of depressurization to reduce ground-water inflow into mine shafts. The article is very informative and discusses the effects of depressurization upon shaft inflows adequately. However, the article omits a discussion of another important benefit of depressurization: the reduction of potential for artesian burst or, as it is also called, floor heave. Confined aquifer systems (artesian aquifers) can contain water under several hunder pounds per square inch (psi) of pressure. Juvkam-Wold In general, Mr. Craig's comments are useful and accurate regarding the potential benefits of aquifer depressurization. However, two of his points require further explanation since they may lead to a misunderstanding of my paper and its predictions. These refer to his comments regarding failure to account for storativity and to non-artesian conditions. Equation 5 is indeed Darcy's steady state equation. However, as a careful review of the appendix in this paper will reveal, I have used this equation to represent semi-steady state conditions. Dust formation and the reaction mechanisms of copper matte particles were investigated in simulated flash-oxidation conditions. The granulated and ground matte consisted of 72% Cu, 4% Fe and 21 % S (by weight). Experiments were conducted by using a laminar flow furnace with a reaction-gas composition ranging from 20% to 75% O2 (by volume) in nitrogen. The particle feeding was carried out by a single-particle method, and samples were quenched after a specified reaction time ([~] 0.05 to 0.4 s) in a cold water film. Experimental temperatures ranged from 800o to 1,300o C. Chemical analysis was used to determine the degree of oxidation, and optical and scanning electron microscopes, combined with energy dispersive analysis, were used for characterization of the reacted particles.

In the Spring of 1991, Georgia Marble Company of Arizona (GMCOA), acquired the Andrada Marble Company located near Vail, Arizona, approximately 32 km southeast of Tucson. The Georgia Marble Company operation consists of an open pit quarry and a recently constructed, state of the art calcium carbonate milling and processing facility. The open pit quarry exposes white, crystalline, CaCO3, Escabrosa limestone that meets our customer criteria for Consumer and Industrial Filler applications. The Georgia Marble Company Arizona Division facility is designed and engineered to produce a wide range of milled calcium carbonate that includes finely ground and coarse screened products.

During the early 1960's, a method was developed for refining sand from the Arkansas River to produce a feldspathic product that was proposed for use in making colorless glass. Because of the need for chemical uniformity, a cooperating glass manufacturer specified certain ranges of percentages for each chemical constituent of the sand. These specifications were met by fulfilling the single requirement that alumina vary by no more than 20.1 percent from the specified value. This translated to a total variation of only about 1 percent in the feldspar content of the mixed quartz-feldspar products. Because the feldspar was lighter than the quartz, the average density of refined sand varied depending on composition. Densities, determined to five significant figures, of several samples were correlated with their chemical analyses, and the correlation could then be used with density determinations to more reliably indicate compositions than by chemical analyses only. The effects of several variables on the composition of refined sands were studied. There was a regular variation in the proportion of feldspar with screen size. A series of samples with their natural size distributions were more nearly uniform in composition than the same sands after screening and recombination. The screening and recombination process was done so that the sands had identical size distributions. Variations in the refining showed little effect on composition. A pile of flow-back sand from a construction sand washer was found to be severely segregated. However, samples taken from many points in the river near the sand plant and from the flow-back discharge pipe over several weeks very nearly met the uniformity specification. If care was taken to avoid segregation either before or during processing, it should be possible to meet the uniformity specifications for a feldspathic glass sand.

"1. INTRODUCTIONDo contractual practices affect project outcome? Can better contractual practices improve the likelihood of project success? The consensus amongst experts is that better contractual practices really do improve project outcomes. With this in mind the members of the International Tunnelling Association (ITA) Working Group 3 on Contractual Practices (WG3) pooled their collective knowledge to publish in 2011 the document entitled The ITA Contractual Framework Checklist for Subsurface Construction Contracts (ITA Working Group 3, 2011). Written for projects involving significant subsurface works, e.g. tunnels and caverns, the ITA Framework Checklist explains the major contractual issues that must be considered to ensure a successful project. Its goal is not to specify how each issue should be resolved, but rather to highlight the issues and give recommendations on how they should be addressed. The Checklist is compatible with, and provides guidance for reviewing, standard contracts such as FIDIC and NEC. One of the authors is a co-author of the Checklist and has contributed to previous papers describing the Checklist and its applicability to hydropower projects (Hodgkinson & Wilson 2014, Hodgkinson & Wilson 2015). The Checklist identifies a series of issues that should be contractually defined, which can be summarized as follows: •,Methods for dealing with geotechnical uncertainties should be defined in the contract •,There should be an appropriate level of geotechnical/geological investigation •,Sufficient mobilization periods should be allowed •,Sufficient time should be allowed for testing and commissioning •,Procedures for timely dispute resolution should clearly defined •,Quality and performance requirements should be clearly defined and measurable •,Provision should exist for cost consequences of unforeseen circumstances •,Dispute resolution processes should be clearly defined •,Payment processes should be fair and clearly defined •,Risk should be clearly allocated and parties should be able to bear the risks they carry •,There should be a mechanism for adjusting payments according to conditions •,The risk management approach should be clearly defined •,Admeasurement or unit price approaches are recommended •,The responsibilities of each party must be clearly defined •,The consequences of non-performance should be clearly defined •,The construction programme (schedule) should be realistic."

The Hicom mill is a conical mill in which a ball or autogenous load tumbles within a high-intensity acceleration field. An autogenous Hicom mill with a power density of about 1100 kw/m3 and a volume of just 4 litres reduced a 50 m quartzite feed to 90% passing 38 microns at a feed rate of 160kg/h (in closed circuit with a hydrocyclone). Batch tests have identified fracture, chipping and abrasion breakage mechanisms at pebble sizes of 5 to 50 mm. The special behaviour of the load in Hicom mills was exploited to develop a novel technique for estimating steady state autogenous load size distributions.

TWO-INCH TO MINUS #100 MESH IN ONE GO The need to reduce mineral ore to a very fine mesh economically has been a timeless problem in the mining industry. With this as the specific and we.l.l focused objective, the Cyclone Crusher has been designed and is being manufactured. Utilizing space age technology from such military projects as piercing steel plate with plastic particles, the Cyclone uses the physical principles of centrifugal force. Through a combination of very high G-forces and asymmetrical loadings between a cone and anvil, particles are pulverized to very fine mesh gradation. Just how fine the final product will be, of course, is dependant on a number of factors. The machine setting, the feed rate, the gradation of the in feed material, the molecular structure of the material, and the original fracture planes of the material all affect the end result.

A laboratory study of the jigging process with Pittsburgh seam coal has been conducted. The laboratory-scale Baum jig used in this study was a McNally-Norton LO30X Right Hand Model Baum jig with an effective screen area of 0.186 m2 Feed material was prepared by selecting a size range from 6 mesh to 1.91 cm. Solid feed rates were 27.2 kg/min and 32.7 kg/min. Water flow rates were varied from 37.9 to 94.6 L/min. It has been found that smaller particles give higher values of density of separation and lower efficiency of separation. Increasing water flow rate increases the discharge rate of clean coal at a constant solid feed rate. It appears that the efficiency of separation increases by increasing water flow rate up to a certain value, and then levels off upon increasing the flow rate further.

Rapid coal extraction techniques in gassy mines may strain a ventilation system if a degasification approach is not utilized. Design of mine ventilation systems requires estimates of gas emission rates from unmined coal into the existing mine workings. A degasification system for a specific property can be properly engineered to improve mining economics if the proper geologic and reservoir information is collected. This paper describes methods to determine the degasification rates for horizontal boreholes and vertical (stimulated and unstimulated) wells and the rate of gas emissions into the mine workings. The methodology is demonstrated by a specific example. Horizontal boreholes drilled in advance of mining are demonstrated to be the most effective means of coal seam degasification and reduction of gas emissions into mine workings. The significance of the paper is that few published methods for these estimates are available

Companies in the mining industry have been involved in a range of controversies over planning, siting, permitting, environmental, and enforcement issues. Through the use of conflict resolution case studies, this paper will present approaches and procedures that can help companies and other involved parties to successfully manage and resolve differences in a mutually acceptable manner.

In 1976, the Resources Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) aroused concern in the mining community about the regulation of mine waste streams under RCRA. In response, the Bureau of Mines initiated research in the late 1970's that addressed mine and minerals processing waste. Research included investigating improved environmental technology for metal, coal, non-metal, and emerging industries such as oil shale, tar sands, peat, and lignite. Environmental issues escalated in the 1980's. Proposed regulations addressing control technology for mining and mineral processing wastes prompted the Bureau of Mines to become involved in 1985 in an advisory capacity to the regulatory agency, the Environmental Protection Agency. In Fiscal Year 1988, the Bureau of Mines initiated a research program designed to provide the minerals industries with cost-effective solutions for ameliorating environmental effects of mining. Bureau research has led to advances in the areas of acid mine drainage control and mitigation, subsidence prediction and control, and control and treatment of solid wastes resulting from mining and mineral beneficiation. The Bureau also conducts research seeking new methods to remediate abandoned mine lands. A discussion of the mine waste issues is presented, followed by a summary of past and present research conducted by the Bureau of Mines.

What is required for the mining industry to grow and prosper in a politically challenging world? The answer to this can be summarized as “the industry’s three priorities.” The first priority is gaining access to the world’s mineralized jurisdictions. The second is establishing a measure of security and predictability in government treatment of mining. Confidence in the stability of the fiscal and legal framework within which mining operates is necessary to encourage the investment of large amounts of capital in mine development. The third priority is sustaining the industry’s welcome during the long term in those jurisdictions worthy of investment.

INTRODUCTION We will discuss here only the subway construction phase; that is, two to five years at a given location--not the long-term analysis. We also will compare some tunnel construction methods used for BART and in Los Angeles. Typically, urban planners and engineers try to balance a new mass transit system to include tunneled subways, cut-and-cover construction in city streets, and elevated guideways. Their decisions are based on many factors, most of which can be quantified. But there are some socio-economic-environmental factors which are almost intangible, or nonquantifiable, and these are rarely included in the final report for a rapid transit system. There are two reasons for this: First, it is difficult to evaluate disruptions and psychological inconveniences to individuals and to the community during the construction period, and even more difficult to assign costs because the valuations are always subjective. Second, the rapid transit project capital costs are given in the final report and the public knows them; but the intangible social costs are borne by the affected neighborhood community, not the entire city, and as such they are "hidden costs," which in fact may add as much as 25 percent to the total system cost.

It took me nearly nine months to make the move from Arizona to Berkeley, opening an office and planning our new home. While I was in Warren Dorothy had rented two rooms for my office In the new California Commercial Union Building at 315 Montgomery Street in San Francisco. She made such a good choice that this remained my address for more than 50 years Dorothy had also looked over many lots In Berkeley, and took an option on the one that pleased her the most. It was a beautiful lot, or rather three, as we took three lots to protect our view. The only possible drawback was that it was in a new district and there were only two houses within two blocks. No one could tell how the area would develop but we liked it so much that we bought the lots on the spot and signed a note to guarantee payment. Dorothy's good judgment was shown by the fact that after 50 years we are still glad to be living on the same property, at 168 Southampton Avenue. We arranged a meeting with the distinguished architect Bernard Maybeck-and employed him to design a house for us. Dorothy spent most of her time with Maybeck planning the house and an attached studio for her, and she later wrote an amusing essay on her dealings with Maybeck. They were so successful that even now we could not think of any changes we would have wanted. It took several months to design a house that suited Dorothy and would fit on our hilltop. I was glad to overcome some of Maybeck's scorn for "only an engineer" by showing how, by rotating the studio addition 45º, it would fit the lot without serious excavation. We finally signed a contract with Maybeck, borrowing so much money that it scared us. Caterpillar’s 797 327-t (360-st) mining truck is currently being tested at the company’s proving facilities. Mine evaluations began in the second quarter. The unit will be commerically available in North America in 2000 and worldwide in 2001. The new model is the largest of Caterpillar’s off high-way truck line. In addition, the company has replaced its 966F series II and 970 F wheel loaders with the966G and 972G models. 797 mining haul truck Caterpillar developed the 797 mining haul truck in response to mining companies seeking to reduce cost per ton in large-scale operations. The 797 is sized to work with loading shovels used in large mining operations. And Caterpillar will match the body design to the material being hauled, to optimize pay-loads.

The declining grades of surface deposits have re-confirmed the need for greater production rates. Large scale production requires increased investments in expensive and sophisticated equipment. The key to successful operations can depend entirely on proper equipment utilisation and in this program of research at the Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering, University of Queensland, much emphasis has been placed on the analysis and improvement of this aspect of a load-haul-dump operation. For a model to be successfully integrated into a mine engineering function and readily accepted by mine operating personnel, it has to offer more than just results. The concepts used in its design and construction must include sufficient detail to enable engineers to apply it usefully and with confidence.

The Bureau of Mines, Department of Interior, has been investigating the use of polyethylene oxide (PEO) as a flocculant for a variety of mineral wastes. As part of this investigation, the hydrodynamics of the flocculation process were studied. It was determined that to obtain optimum dewatering results, the factors of energy input into the stirrer, polymer concentration, and polymer dosage must be considered. Lt was found that at a given polymer concentration, there was an optimum stirrer speed and polymer dosage. With excess PEO, the amount of water removed in the trommel decreased, but no evidence for steric stabilization was observed.
