The development of economical and effective treatment processes for solid and aqueous waste is a critical issue facing the mining industry today. Cyanide, nitrates and acid rock drainage are environmentally sensitive effluents that require treatment or containment for acceptable disposal. In situ biotreatment processes are an emerging technology (Thayer) for cyanide oxidation, denitrification, sulfide mineral alteration and metal re- mineralization. Biological cyanide oxidation is competitive with chemical treatment processes (peroxide, alkaline chlorination) for process solutions, spent ore and tailings detoxification. Microbial denitrification treats mine waste contaminated with nitrates from blasting, processing or nitrification of the host rock. Bio-alteration of sulfide minerals and metal re-mineralization may present the most cost-effective and environmentally acceptable method of dealing with sulfide tailings and leachate solutions. Field test programs for cyanide bio-degradation and denitrification of spent ore and process solutions were designed and run at two mines. Although the treatment bacteria and the application processes are similar, each waste presented site-specific problems for adapting the biotreatment processes. Some of the site problems include climate, ore geochemistxy, field bacteria production, waste microbiology and application engineering. This paper compares treatment design and results for cyanide oxidation and denitrification in heap detox treatments.

A small area in the Alabama Piedmont was studied to determine if metallic enrichment was associated with local magnetic anomalies. Cores from two holes in these magnetic anomalous areas have sulfide (pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite) film on slicken-side and fracture surfaces. Two hundred and fifty soil samples were collected from the top of the "B" horizon on 1, 000 foot centers over the general trend of magnetic anomalies. Soil samples were leached with a 1:2. 7 mixture of HF and H2SO4 and the dilute filtrate analyzed for Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Co, Cr, Mo, and Cd, using atomic absorption methods. Concentration-value maps were prepared for each element. Small areas of anomalous concentrations were defined for Cu, Pb, Zn, Mo, and Ni. Some of these areas generally coincides with magnetic anomalies. Concentration values (ppm) range from: Cu 165.0 - 0. 5; Pb 265. 0 - 0.0; Zn 1386.0 - 43. 0; Ni 187.0 - 10.0; Co 207.0 - 6. 5; Cr 117.5 - 2.0; Mo 95.0 - 0.0; and Cd 32. 5 - 2.0. Studies of other magnetic anomalies appear warranted.

"The use of recycled water in flotation has significant effects on flotation and selectivity because the recycled water contains many dissolved compounds and ions that alter the chemistry of the system. In this study, the effects of calcium, magnesium and sulfate, which are abundant components in recycled water, were investigated on galena, sphalerite and pyrite flotation using pure minerals and a complex sulfide ore by conducting bench-scale flotation, microflotation and zeta potential measurements. The bench-scale flotation tests indicated that higher recoveries of galena and sphalerite are obtained when water is recycled, due to higher concentrations of ions in recycled water. However, there was a critical ion concentration for galena recovery. The microflotation tests showed that galena recoveries at different pHs in recycled water are lower than in tap and distilled water. Pure sphalerite recoveries improved in recycled water in the bench-scale test with ore. Pure pyrite was depressed with recycled water as well. Zeta potentials became less negative with increased calcium and magnesium ion concentrations due to their adsorptions, and the presence of sulfate ions was seen to increase the negative charges of sphalerite and pyrite, conversely for galena. IntroductionWater is among the most important elements for mining and mineral processing. The distance to water sources is one of the major factors for mine site selection. The mining and mineral processing sector needs and consumes large quantities of water. In Chile in 2014, the copper mining sector alone consumed 12.7 m3/s fresh water for 1.189 tons of ore processing, and recycled 74 percent of the consumed water (Chilean Copper Commission, 2015). A plant that does not reuse or recycle any water will require 1.9 to 3.0 m3 of water per ton of ore processed (Gunson et al., 2012). Many stages of mineral processing, such as grinding, gravity concentration, dense medium separation, wet magnetic separation, flotation and hydrometallurgical operations, use large volumes of water (Schumann, Levay and Ametov, 2009).In mineral processing plants, the process water is recycled from the tailings dams, thickener overflows, and dewatering and filtration units. Wet concentration processes can require large quantities of water. Flotation, the most common process, typically takes place at 25 to 35 percent solids by mass. Most flotation plants practice at least some water reuse and recycled. Modern mines and mineral processing operations generally aim for zero water release (Levay, Smart and Skinner, 2001). In most cases, water quality has been found to affect flotation performance, and this interaction remains under investigation."

Wet magnetic separation methods for the recovery of hematite and chromite fines and ultrafines were investigated. These methods included wet high-intensity and high-gradient magnetic separation, carrier or "piggy-hack" magnetic separation, magnetic field-induced aggregation and magnetic seeding. This investigation indicated that wet magnetic separation is more efficient for fines and ultrafines. This investigation also indicated that other methods can be used to enhance the particle aggregation and/or the magnetic response. The magnetic behavior of these minerals with respect to the magnetizing field, temperature and particle size is also presented.

Gold and silver cyanide complexes are presently desorbed from activated carbon by means of hot caustic elutions. These solutions may or may not contain additional sodium cyanide. There are several parameters which affect the rate of stripping. Some of these include pH, ionic strength, and tempera­ture. Stripping is conducted in recirculating (ZADRA) or once through (AARL) circuits. This paper describes the development of a new chemical eluant which increases the rate of stripping of both gold and silver cyanide complexes from carbon. Two case history applications are described.

Microflotation tests with sodium oleate, in alkaline pH, were performed with apatite and some silicates (phlogopite, quartz, and chlorite) that commonly occur in Brazilian phosphate ores. Further flotation tests were carried out with selected ores containing the same silicates as important gangue minerals. The results showed that apatite recovery is highly affected by competition with silicate minerals, probably activated by calcium ions dissolved in flotation pulp. Inorganic chemical species (sodium tripolyphosphate, sodium carbonate/ bicarbonate, and carbon dioxide) that could act as water softeners were used as modifier agents. They proved to be capable of improving flotation recovery and selectivity.

For the 36th consecutive summer, the Colorado Mining Association Education Foundation and the Colorado School of Mines have sponsored “A Total Concept of the Mining Industry” for kindergarten through grade 12 teachers. Teachers from 34 states, plus the District of Columbia and two foreign countries, have graduated from the four-week course. They received six hours of recertification credit. This summer 31 teachers from Colorado, Kentucky, Virginia and Alaska completed the program. The course is unique from other shorter courses in that it solicits teachers of all disciplines from all K-12classes. In addition to the expected earth science and mathematics teachers, the Class of 2004 consisted of educators who teach music, chemistry, biology, social studies, history, basic English and world history. Others in the program included those who teach American history, physical and life science, remedial reading, consumer/family studies, “world of work,” language arts, engineering technology, environmental science, world geography, human anatomy and physiology, and business.

Primary amines are strong collectors of apatites and they can selectively float sedimentary phosphates from calcareous ores. However, secondary and tertiary amines and tri-methyl ammonium salts were ineffective. The use of kerosene reduces the collector requirements because hydrocarbon is coadsorbed along with the amine on the mineral surface. The heats of reaction of aminium ions with such anions as phosphate, carbonate and sulfate, were measured in a microcalorimeter and discussed in terms of the solubility of the precipitates formed and their relationship with the adsorption mechanism of primary amines on phosphate minerals. Experimental evidence supports a view that primary amines are adsorbed through chemical interaction between the aminium and phosphate ions at the mineral surface.

The Toquepala concentrator expansion project incremented the capacity of the existing concentrator by 15,000 Metric tons per day (t/d), from 45,000 to 60,000 t/d. The plant is located in southern Peru,1,200 km southeast of Lima. The implementation plan for the expansion project was based upon an engineering and procurement contract, and a construction contract. The overall Project Management was by Southern Peru Copper Corporation (SPCC). The expansion followed a very aggressive schedule that considered a construction period of only ten months, with minimum interference to the existing facilities. Major equipment was purchased during basic engineering. This paper details the design, construction, and commissioning of the 6.4 m diameter by 10.2 m long ball mill, and the performance of the milling circuit during the first two months of operation.

The Sloan Ranch kimberlite complex is located approximately 130 km north-northwest of Denver in the Precambrian core of the northern Colorado Front Range (Figure 1). A Devonian age for the complex is suggested by the fossil assemblages in limestone xenoliths (Chronic and others, 1969), and by paleomagnetism of the kimberlite (E. E. Larson, personal communication, 1986). The presence of diamond was first reported in rocks from the Sloan diatreme by McCallum and Mabarak (1976). Prior to this time, the distinctive- appearing host rock of the Sloan diamonds had been quarried for use as terrazzo stone; examples may be seen in the floors of the airports in Cheyenne and Laramie, Wyoming. The Minerals Division of The Superior Oil Company obtained a lease on the Sloan property in 1980. During the next four years Superior built and fine-tuned a highly efficient diamond recovery facility, explored and tested the Sloan deposit, and used Sloan as a site for testing numerous exploration techniques for future use in a continuing exploration program in the Colorado-Wyoming kimberlite province. The Sloan property was ultimately determined to be sub- economic, but the lessons learned there have been very helpful in subsequent exploration efforts.

Since the late 19th Century, scholars have been concerned about finding proper methods of managing business. The search seems to be taking us full-circle to the time and motion studies of Taylor (Horn, 1987). It wasn't until the late 1970's, however, that systematic investigations were made in the mining industry. One of the first was a study by Sanders, Patterson, and Peay (1976). That project explored the relationship of attitudes and safety. Peay, Atkin, and Goodman (1977, then reviewed the whole area of Organizational Development, including the so-called Rushton experiment.

Lateritic gold has been the object of study only for a very few years, though nuggets have been mentioned in earlier works even as early as 1984 by Hartt in Brazil. In Mato Grosso State, lateritisation is intense, as is common in all tropical forest areas of the world. Exploration has revealed the presence of recoverable "nugget gold" of variable sizes (30 - 200 gms) but frequently of good size (0 - 40 gms), especially near Cuiaba and Alta Floresta regions. In both of them the host system is a lateritised breccia indicative of a fault or shear zone breccia, though in different lithological domains. The Cuiaba occurrences are phyllitic and show a profile as follows, from top to bottom: 1) Compact ferralite crust. 2) Oolitic to pisolitic compact crust (+ some gold). 3) Mottled concretionary laterite crust. 4) Lateritised "eluvial material" (gold nuggets). 5) Mottled patchy to banded laterite. 6) Banded lateritised phyllite with lenticular to banded goethite. 7) Altered red goethitic phyllite, with quartz veins (+ fine gold). 8) Unaltered grey phyllite with quartz veins (Protore). The Alta Floresta-Juruena River occurrences are volcano-sedimentary and show a profile as follows: 1) Deep brown siltitic, argillaceous and arenaceous material with organic matter (+ gold). 2) Modular and concretionary laterite, compact and indurated, with arsenophyrite in quartz fragments (gold nuggets). 3) Band with silty-clayey matrix and arenaceous in nature. 4) Bedrock meta-arcosian arenite. 5) Volcano-sedimentary with rhyodacites and andesitic basalts, with intercalations of arkosic and greywacke nature. Breccias and quartz veins, and granites associated in different portions (Protore).

This paper describes an application of a new approach to mine planning and production scheduling in a gold mine. The technique, limited to use in open pit mines (but not limited to gold), has been described previously (Gershon, 1987). The-computer program used is the HOPS software, which has been described previously as well (Gershon, 1988). The mine is scheduled for the production of 8,000 blocks out of a mine having 25,000 blocks (50 x 50 x 10). The technique is based on the concept of inverted cones (Gershon, 1987). While it does not provide a true optimization of results, it does approximate the optimal situation. As opposed to most scheduling software that only serves as a computerized notepad for the scheduler, the use of this approach allows for a scheduling intelligence to be built into the software.

Assembling consistent data for a 40-year time series is a challenge because of the many changes that have occurred in this period. In many cases, because of process improvements and consumer requirements, grades of materials change in a 40-year span. This can lead to a wide fluctuation in price data simply because of increased costs for premium grades. Sources for obtaining price data can also change during a 40-year period. Changing the data source also introduces anomalies in a time series. In some cases, published price data are not representative of the real value of the material and provide little basis for further analysis. For some industrial mineral commodities, there are only a few producers, and value and production data are considered proprietary. In the data presented in this chapter, every attempt was made to ensure that the data were as consistent and representative of the industry as possible. However, the factors mentioned above may have introduced inconsistencies in some of the data series. Many different factors influence trends for industrial minerals because of the diversity of end uses for these commodities. Trends in production and prices for most of the industrial minerals can be related to one or more of the following: changing demand or technologies in end-use industries, development of new end uses, the effect of environmental regulations, production and processing technology changes, energy costs, foreign competition and substitution by other materials, and production as a byproduct of other minerals. World economic conditions, such as recessions and inflation rates, also play a part in some production and price trends. Data for 40 years of production for industrial minerals in the United States are presented in [Table 1] in 10-year increments. Unit values for the industrial minerals, in actual and constant 1990 dollars, are shown in [Tables 2 and 3].

Abstract - A shiploading terminal near Punta Arenas, the southernmost city of the world (lat. 53°-10'S, long. 70°-54' W) is described. Strong winds, choppy seas, frequent gales, rain, and snow make it difficult to load ships at an offshore berth in this area. Detailed site investigations, including a wind-recording program, supplied sufficient information for the analysis of operating conditions. The weather pattern of the entire region, including the predictability of gales, was utilized in the analysis. The results showed that a bulk loading terminal at this location is feasible, provided that the design takes into consideration the specific problems of the site. The final layout shows a terminal that can be approached from several different directions, depending on the direction of the wind. The mooring system is arranged to allow alter- native ways of attaching and casting off mooring lines and executing docking and departing maneuvers. The berth is supported on piles and contains the minimum of structures, relying on a slewing shiploader to reach the ship in any position, with only limited fore and aft shifting of the vessel for loading the extreme hatches. Results of wind recording, statistical analysis of wind and wave data, operating criteria, and the results of berth availability analysis are included in the paper.

So that you will not have been misled entirely we will devote our considerations to a far more important art and if I may, I should like to begin by quoting Vincent Van Gogh. According to a literal translation the artist in describing one of his famous paintings said "these peasants are eating their potatoes with those very hands that dug them from the earth' and put them in the dish". Vincent Van Gogh may not have realized at that time, that he could likewise have been describing what is probably one of the oldest of all arts - the art of Material Handling - an art that man with the aid of science has tried to improve since the beginning of time.

INTRODUCTION If a uranium mill worker is involved in an accident, analysis of excreta for uranium content and[in vivo] counting methods are used to estimate the extent of the possible exposure and to predict the pattern of uranium distribution among tissues (Spitz, [et al]., 1980). Interpretations of urinary excretion data are based on studies of human exposures to single uranium compounds including U02, U308, U03, UF4, U02F2 and UF6 (Alexander, 1974). Refined uranium ore (yellowcake) is a variable mixture of U03-NH3-H20 adducts (ammonium diuranate, ADU) and their thermal conversion product, U308. The variability in composition of yellowcake (Kalkwarf, 1979; Eidson and Mewhinney, 1980; Dennis, Blauer and Kent, 1981) complicates the interpretation of bioassay data from individuals that might have inhaled any single yellowcake material. A test system would be useful to estimate the dissolution behavior of a particular yellowcake aerosol inhaled by a worker and aid in the interpretation of bioassay data collected before and after an accident. A series of experiments was conducted for this purpose. The objectives of these studies were to: 1) develop specific criteria for comparing [in vitro] dissolution systems and 2) use the criteria to evaluate solvents, methods and experimental temperature and pH conditions used in previous studies. Dissolution experiments were conducted using different combinations of solvents, conditions and methods with a common yellowcake sample. Because little information is available from human yellowcake inhalation exposures to evaluate the [in vitro] results, criteria for evaluation of different tests were derived from a model of yellowcake dissolution in lung constructed from a number of cases in which humans were exposed to single uranium compounds known to be in yellowcake (Mercer, 1975). MATERIALS AND METHODS Materials The powder used in the tests was taken from one lot of yellowcake obtained from a commercial uranium mill. The same powder was previously designated as Mill D in Eidson and Mewhinney, 1980 and Mill 2 in Kalkwarf, 1979. The ammonium diuranate content was measured by infrared absorption to be 25% ± 1% (Eidson and Mewhinney, 1980). Solvents The compositions of the two biological fluid simulants used are compared in Table 1. Simulated lung fluid (SLF) (Kalkwarf, 1979; Dennis, Blauer and Kent, 1981) was chosen to simulate the composition [ ] of lung fluid as closely as practical (Moss, 1979). Simulated blood serum ultrafiltrate (SUF) (Eidson and Mewhinney, 1980) was chosen because of previous successful efforts to model human urinary excretion of inhaled plutonium aerosols (Kanapilly Raabe and Boyd, 1974) and the dissolution rate of 241Am02 in Beagle dogs (Mewhinney and Griffith, 1981). Major differences are that simulated lung fluid contains Mg2+ and a higher Ca2+ concentration than SUF and that SUF contains ammonium ion. Both solvents include protein substitutes; acetate is used in SLF, while amino acids are used in SUF. Both solvents include phosphate but the chelating agent diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) is included in SUF to prevent possible formation of insoluble uranyl phosphate precipitates that would result in an underestimation of solubility. In addition to the above solvents, modified solvent compositions were prepared to investigate the role of specific salts in yellowcake dissolution studies. Solutions of SUF (Table 1) were prepared without DTPA (SUF-DTPA) and without amino acids (SUF-amino acids). No solution excluded both DTPA and amino acids. Operational grade modelling is a technique that uses production data to run daily updates of property models. It will enable mining engineers to use property predictions based on the most recently acquired data as support for quality control and decision making. The approach necessitates that the properties of the run- of-mine material can always be attributed to individual mining blocks or charges. The software employed must be highly reliable, because a system failure or the loss of data could seriously affect the mine's quality management. An operational grade modelling system has been developed for the Breitenau magnesite mine. It makes use of the Linear Octree Based Property Modelling system which was conceived and realised at the Free University of Berlin. This paper describes the system design and gives an account of the experiences during the first six months since system start-up.

Introduction Diesel-powered vehicles are used extensively in underground mines throughout North America. The bulk of the diesel vehicles found in underground mining operations are used for loading and ore haulage, as well as for transportation of personnel and supplies. Along with the advantages of using diesels underground is the disadvantage associated with diesel-tailpipe particulate-matter emissions (DPM). The concentration of DPM in the ambient air of US underground metal mines is not now regulated by the Federal Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). However, recent studies have shown DPM to be mutagenic (National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, 1988), and the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) has recommended that the exposures of per¬sonnel to DPM be limited to an 8-hr time-weighted average concentration (threshold limit value or TLV) of 0.15 mg/m3 (Anon., 1995). The authors, while making measurements in a number of US underground mines that use diesel haulage equipment, found mine air DPM concentrations ranging from 0.2 to 2.36 Mg/M3 (McCawley and Cocalis, 1986; Watts et al., 1989; Cantrell et al., 1991; Haney, 1992; US Bureau of Mines, 1992; Watts, 1992; Watts et al., 1995). If the proposed DPM TLV were to be adopted as a permissible exposure limit (PEL) for US underground mines, the proposed limit of 0.15 mg/m3 PEL would be lower than any of the concentrations measured in the earlier studies and would represent more than a 15-fold reduction from the maximum 2.36 mg/m3 concentration. A 0.15 mg/m3 PEL would also represent a 4.5-fold reduction from the average 0.68 mg/m3 measured mine ambient air DPM concentration reported in this paper. Other diesel tailpipe emissions that are now regulated underground include carbon monoxide (CO), with a PEL of 50 ppm; nitrogen dioxide (NO,), with a PEL of 5 ppm; nitric oxide (NO), with a PEL of 25 ppm; and sulfur dioxide (SO,) with a PEL of 5 ppm. Because the concentrations of these gaseous pollutants and DPM are affected by the state-of-maintenance (Waytulonis,1992), it is important that a means be developed to measure emissions from engines that are now in service to determine when maintenance is needed. The current study was the result of an inquiry by mine¬maintenance personnel who had been receiving complaints about high concentrations of diesel soot (DPM) in mine headings from load-haul-dump (LHD) vehicle operators. Mine-maintenance personnel were searching for an objective test to determine if the diesel tailpipe particulate emitted was excessive. The mine was also evaluating electronically controlled, two-cycle, naturally aspirated, direct-injection diesel engines on some of their JCI (John-Clark Inc.) load-haul-dump (LHD) vehicles. These LHD vehicles were used to haul freshly blasted ore from mine headings to a feeder breaker. The feeder breaker breaks down the larger chunks and feeds the broken ore onto a conveyor. Michigan Technological University, in past studies, developed an emissions-measurement apparatus (EMA) ca¬pable of measuring diesel vehicle tailpipe pollutant concentrations (Chan et al., 1992; Chan et al., 1993; Carlson et al., 1994). At the time of the study reported here, most of the mine's LHD vehicles used a 12-cylinder, four-cycle, naturally aspirated prechamber diesel engine. The study was undertaken in cooperation with mine maintenance supervisors from late 1992 through July 1993. The objectives were to compare diesel exhaust emissions between the 6-cylinder, two-cycle, electronically controlled, direct-injected diesel engine and the 12-cylinder, four-cycle, prechamber diesel engine and to, then, use the data collected, in conjunction with mine ambient air measurements, to demonstrate the application of the "deterioration factor" (Chan et al., 1992), which is a measure of the state-of-maintenance of mine-vehicle engines that are now in service. The information would be used to identify vehicles that need maintenance to reduce emissions.
