Complex and distinct geological units spread along the 7-mile long 30-ft inside diameter Upper Rouge Tunnel CSO Control Project in Detroit, Michigan. Its construction is divided in two tunnel construction packages: The South Tunnel, to be driven in finely laminated weak TG Limy Shale, will be excavated by a shielded TBM with precast concrete segmental lining, while the North tunnel, predominantly in a relatively more competent geologic formation Antrim Shale, will be excavated by a main beam TBM with a two-pass lining system. The adits and deaeration chambers will be excavated by sequential excavation method. This paper addresses the process of selecting excavation methods and lining systems for shafts, tunnels, connecting adits, and deaeration chambers.

Strain-burst phenomena are generally characterised by sudden releases of energy in a volume of highly stressed rock. Strain bursts are encountered in situations such as crown pillar bursts during cut-and-fill mining, face bursts at development headings cord floor bursts in deep shaft sinking. This paper describes a simple two-dimensional linear elastic FE modeling approach that leads to the calculation of the energy-release rate (ERR) and the total energy storage rate (TESR) in the rock-mass around the openings. The merits of using such energy parameters in the analysis of strain-burst problems for identifying areas of high energy release/storage are discussed through a case stud v. However, much site-specific back analyses are needed to better understand how strain bursts and energy parameters are interrelated.

In the past two years recent increases in silver prices over levels that prevailed for many years have changed supply/demand patterns. On the supply side, a silver mining boom is in progress in the United States and elsewhere. On the demand side, traditional uses of silver by individuals are dropping while industry is conserving. These changes will alter the supply/demand balance and bring about more moderate rises in silver prices, which in turn will impact the mining industry.

Introduction and Historical Background Although both sluices and devices using a simple flowing film are among the oldest known methods of concentration, they are still extensively employed in a variety of situations where they are not only efficient but also have a low operating cost. More particularly, they are valuable for making a bulk concentrate of high specific gravity minerals from alluvials and beach sand and in upgrading low value ores. The antiquity of some of the basic concepts can be seen in the fact that they are found in Agricola's De Re Metallica which was published at Basic in 1546, while in 1602, Carew114 gave a fairly clear account of tin ore dressing in Cornwall in which grass turves were used to catch the cassiterite. This is perhaps one of the forerun¬ners of the blanket strake. The planilla of Mexico, the lanchute of Malaysia and the old Cornish box huddle are also descended from these early strakes. In fact, a sluice with holes in the bottom for concentrate discharge was shown by Agricola, not unlike the principle used in the plane table and the lamflo sluice. The convex huddle for the treatment of sandy material appeared about 1848 and the concave form eight to ten years later. For the treatment of "slime" sizes, wooden dead frames which were manually worked were used in Cornwall for many years but gave way to the automatic water-operated type in 1860, and even a mechanically tilted frame was described by Henderson115 in 1857. Theoretical Considerations The behavior of solid particles in suspension depends to a great extent upon the pulp density and the size of the suspended particles. In a fairly dilute suspension, such as that normally used when dealing with small particle sizes, the behavior of particles in a flowing film results from two effects. These are the lateral displacement, which is determined by the time taken for each particle to penetrate the flowing film and reach the solid surface, and the resistance offered by each particle to further displacement after it has reached this surface. The initial penetration through the flowing film depends on the size and specific gravity of the particle and the thickness and viscosity of the film. As a result the smaller particles will migrate further before their movement is retarded relative to larger particles of the same specific gravity. The behavior on reaching the solid surface de¬pends on whether there is a single particle layer or, as is more often the case, a multiple layer or thin bed of material which is sufficiently dilated, permits the penetration of higher specific gravity grains. Thrust of Flowing Films. When a thin film of liquid flows over a plane solid surface, the layer next to the surface remains at rest but the velocity of the film increases with the distance from the surface and becomes a maximum near, but not quite at, the free surface. Therefore, a particle in suspension in such a film is acted upon by a greater force near the upper part of the film than at the lower part, resulting in an overturning effect. After a particle reaches the separating surface or an accumulated densely packed bed of other particles, the liquid flow causes it to move downstream by rolling, sliding, or by a movement involving alternating suspension and deposi¬tion (saltation). In rolling and sliding, which are brought about by a substantially noneddying stream, the large submerged particles are acted upon to the greatest extent and they move more rapidly than smaller ones, notwithstanding their greater mass. When two particles of the same size but of different specific gravity are considered, the higher density one moves more slowly by reason of its greater mass. As a result the particles tend to become arranged in the manner shown in Fig. 29. If any particle is so large as to stand above the water surface, the transporting force on such a particle, although the maximum available, will have less effect than that on a submerged one. Such large grains are therefore carried a lesser distance. Fluid Velocity in a Flowing Film It can be shown that if y is the distance within the flowing film from the interface, the fluid velocity v' at this point is given by IIn this equation p' is the fluid density, g the acceleration due to gravity, a the viscosity, a the angle made by the film to the horizontal, and 0 the film thickness (in cgs units). From these expressions it can be seen that the depth of the flowing film varies as the cube root of the volume of fluid and inversely as the cube root of the sine of the plane surface inclination. Similarly the distance a particle can travel before reaching the surface is directly related to the quantity of fluid and its viscosity. The viscosity of pulp is greatly increased by the presence of near colloidal particles and consequently the penetration of the somewhat larger grains through the flowing film is retarded, resulting in them being carried further across the concentrator deck. Obviously this effect can be reduced by prior removal of some or all of the ultra¬fine particles. The detrimental effect of kaolin on the separation of fine ferrosilicon from quartz has also been demonstrated by Johnston,116 the relationship between viscosity and efficiency of separation being shown in Fig. 30. The pH value also has a very marked influence on the viscosity and the use of acid mine water, for example, can increase viscosity materially and thereby result in lower efficiency. Dilation of Multi-Particle Systems Except during washing (when a single particle layer may exist) concentration usually takes place in a bed of particles which is partially dilated or stirred by eddy currents. A mathematical model describing the concentration profile of fine particles in the axial direction in liquid fluidized beds has been developed for the removal of fine particles. A forward finite differentiation technique has been used to solve a continuity equation with a source term to predict the concentration profile and, hence the recovery as a function of time. With the aid of experimental results obtained using a fluidized bed of 3-cm diam, dimensionless parameters were identified. These parameters were used to predict the concentration profile of fine particles in fluidized beds of larger sizes. Four different sizes of fluidized beds, namely, 1.3, 3.0, 4.0, and 7.5 cm in diam, were used in this investigation. The amounts of bed particles used included 4, 8, 16, 24, 59, and 120 g, and the size of bed particles were 48x100, 100x150 and 150x200 mesh.

Metallurgical processing of gold ores in positive water balance environments has been facing decreasing discharge concentrations in permits and additional requirements to pass acute toxicity testing before discharges will be allowed to native fisheries. In response to the challenge to meet 0.005 mg/L free cyanide guidance for discharges to fresh water fisheries, the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) International Cyanide Task Group has undertaken an interlaboratory study for the free cyanide method in the metallurgical processing cyanide detoxified reverse osmosis effluent to determine if the quantitation limit for the method could be lowered from the current 0.009 mg/L free cyanide (1) to less than the 0.005 mg/L guidance concentration. Results of the testing are presented below.

"Mining began, in the Colstrip area in the 1920's by the Northern Pacific Railroad. The coal was used for steam locomotives until 1957, when the advent of diesel power made them obsolete. In 1959, Montana Power Company purchased the Northern Pacific properties including the mining equipment, coal leases and the town of Colstrip. Western Energy Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Montana Power Company was formed in 1966 to manage the mining operations in Colstrip. The Rosebud Mine officially re-opened in 1968 to supply coal for Montana Power Company's J. E. Corette Plant In Billings. Since 1970, Long Construction has operated the mine equipment for Western Energy Company". The Rosebud Mine is located in Southeast Montana and supplies coal to two 350 megawatt power plants located in Colstrip and one 180 megawatt plant located in Billings. Approximately 30 percent of Western's annual production is consumed by these plants. The remaining production is shipped to the mid-west and burned by utility companies and municipalities.

The first power transmission cable tunnel in Singapore was the 2.6km long undersea tunnel between Pulau Seraya and mainland Singapore, constructed in the1980s. Ten years later, similar concepts were used for the Tuas Cable Tunnel. The tunnel, which includes a 2.2km long immersed tube section, was designed to accommodate 10power circuits of 400kV and 230kV capacity. It is fully equipped with sophisticated control and communication equipment, fire suppressant and life safety systems plus a maintenance vehicle which runs on tracks through the length of the tunnel. The paper discusses the planning, design, and construction of the Tuas tunnel, and the development of these concepts for future tunnels.

This investigation involves the development of a two-dimensional continuum model for the description of jointed media. Specific application of the model developed here is for the potential geological disposal of radioactive waste in the layered sequence of fractured volcanic tuffs under Yucca Mountain, Nevada. This is currently being considered by the Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigations Project, administered by the Nevada Operations Office of the U. S. Department of Energy. The work is a direct extension of the previous constitutive model by Thomas (1982) based on the work of Morland (1974). The main feature of Thomas's model includes two parts: a continuum approximation based on average discontinuous displacements across jointing planes within a representative elementary volume, and a material constitutive description based on linear elastic matrix material behavior and nonlinear normal and shear joint behavior between jointing planes. The mathematical descriptions by Morland based on strain partitioning among matrix material and joint sets allow multiple joint sets to be included in the model. However, the initial effort by Thomas to implement Morland's mathematical model included only a single set of joints. To make the material model reflect more realistically the field characteristics, the current work extended Thomas's model to include orthogonal sets of joints. The nonlinear elastic normal joint behavior is retained in the present model. Joint shear response was treated as linear elastic in the shear stress versus shear displacement relationship prior to attaining the stress level governed by the Coulomb friction criterion. Beyond this critical stress value, a horizontal line is assumed in the work of Thomas for the shear stress versus slip displacement relationship such that the shear stress remains constant while the slip displacement increases. Motivated by experimental observation, the current work generalized the shear response to allow a line with finite slope to govern the slip behavior beyond the critical stress level. The inclusion of an orthogonal joint set led to a fourth order algebraic equation for the calculation of stress increments as compared with a second order equation obtained by Thomas. The nonlinear elastic normal joint behavior provides criteria which allow the selection of the root that yields result consistent with the loading condition of the problem. The addition of one more set of joints provides the potential to more completely study the interaction of various parameters representing the characteristics of jointed media behavior. Material responses to various loading conditions based on the present constitutive model have been obtained. These results and their comparisons to single joint set results are presented. In 1991, environmental issues related to coal mining continued to be an integral part of managing a cost-effective operation. Environmental regulations and their implementation can create considerable cost burdens on operating mines. Environmental responsibilities require management decisions to be made on a whole systems approach that is comprehensive in costs and consequences. Most of the regulatory activity in 1991 that affected coal was related to reauthorization or revision of several pieces of legislation. Issues related to the reauthorization of the Clean Water Act, the Resource Recovery and Conservation Act (RCRA) and Abandoned Mine Land. Clear Water Act considerations will encompass discharge standards, wetlands issues and proposals to regulate ground water quality at the federal level. Discussion regarding RCRA includes efforts to expand regulatory authority into the area of coal mine waste. That is currently regulated by the Office of Surface Mining (OSM). Another RCRA consideration will be the disposal of coal combustion byproducts. Abandoned Mine Land reauthorization continues the Abandoned Mine Land tax on coal operators. This tax has been in effect since 1977. Regulatory revisions were also proposed by the Department of Interior on valid existing rights, subsidence, federal coal leasing programs and OSM's troubled Applicant Violator System. Industry officials have been critical of the revisions. A federal appeals court found that evidence supported claims by Whitney Benefits, Inc. that the passage of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) deprived the owner of full economic use of its property. Before SMCRA's passage, Whitney established an operating agreement with Peter Kiewit Sons Co. to mine coal.

A pneumatic impact breaker is used to fragment the rock at the shaft bottom, replacing the drill and blast cycle. A backhoe-type mucker removes the broken rock. The operators are in protective cabs below the bottom work deck in the shaft. Preliminary testing has been accomplished at underground and surface test sites in Arizona. Seven, approximately 6.4 m deep by 7.3 m-diameter (21 ft by 24 ft) test holes, (a total of 45 m (148 ft)), were recently excavated in various rock types, including jointed and massive quartz monzonite and rhyolite. An average advance rate of .4 m/hr (1.24 ft/hr) has been achieved. This includes breaking and mucking the rock. Further data is being sought from an in-shaft demonstration.

The primary grinding stage in the Vuonos concentrator comprises a rod mill in open circuit and a semi-autogeneous mill in closed, circuit with a hydrocyclone classifier. The instrumentation of the grinding circuit is displayed in Fig. 1. All the measurements have computer interfaces and all the control circuits have been implemented by the process control computer. The crushed ore feed to the rod mill is measured by a belt-weigher and controlled by a belt-feeder. The pulp density in the rod mill is stabilized by proportioning the waterfeed at the mill inlet to the crushed ore feed. The slurry level in the pump sump is measured by a pressure transducer and it is controlled by charging the speed of the direct-current drive pump.

About 60 small surface coal mines in Pennsylvania participated in a program designed to improve safety performance in the workplace. The method involved the use of safety sampling and observation to assess the degree of safety exhibited by workplace behavior and conditions. Data were collected through the use of on-site safety instruments covering seven major occupational positions typical of small surface mines. Workplace events observed (acts and conditions) were assigned a hazard classification. Feedback was initiated to improve safety performance in areas failing to conform to appropriate safety standards. Results suggest that the variety of unsafe acts and conditions associated with the companies observed are extensive. Further, the experiences drawn from this pilot project have proven the need to pursue this behavioral approach. Future research should concentrate on subjecting the present approach to a strict experimental design involving randomly selected “poor risk” mines.

Bromine is the intermediate member of the halogen family of elements between iodine, a solid, and chlorine, a gas. The name is derived from the Greek bromos, meaning stench. Bromine is the only nonmetallic element that is liquid at room temperatures, with a melting point of -7.2°C and a boiling point of 58.78°C. Reddish brown in color, it dissolves easily in water to yield a red solution. Bromine volatilizes at ordinary temperatures to a red vapor that is very irritating to the eyes, nose, and throat. Density of the liquid is 3.12, and gas weighs 7.59 gpl in standard conditions. Because the element is highly active, it exists in nature only as bromide compounds. Bromine was discovered by Antoine Jerome Balard in seawater bitterns in 1825 and began to find commercial applications shortly thereafter in photography, medicine, and dyes. The first commercial production of bromine was in 1846 in Freeport, PA, followed by production in Germany in 1865. OCCURRENCE Bromine is widely distributed in nature, and compounds occur in solution in natural brines, in seawater, saline lakes, oil and gas well brines, and in evaporite chloride minerals. The concentration of bromine salts ranges from 60 to 65 ppm in seawater to several thousand ppm in oil well brines and saline lakes. The distribution of bromine in marine evaporite minerals and in the solutions from which they crystallized was determined many years ago by H.E. Boeke (1908). Theoretical aspects regarding the geochemistry of bromine have been published in numerous papers (Raup and Mite, 1969). Bromine occurs in solid solution in carnallite and sylvite associated in potash deposits, in halite in salt beds, salt in oil shales, and in trona deposits. Its presence is useful as a guide in geochemical exploration. The analysis of small amounts of bromides in the presence of large amounts of chlorides is discussed by W. Schwerdtner (1963). Manganese, iron, and iodine may interfere with the determination. Other analytical methods are discussed at length in literature (Stenger and Atchison, 1964).

Populations of Bacillus cereus spores are elevated in soils over four subsurface gold deposits in the western United States. Large deposit-to-background ratios of B. cereus populations were obtained in soil traverses over the Minnesota vein deposit, Empire District, Colorado (maximum 50:1); the Shasta (maximum 3,500:1), and Evening Star maximum 18,000:1) vein deposits, Shasta County, California; and the Hog Ranch disseminated gold deposit (maximum 40,000:1) in Washoe County, Nevada. Small increases in the concentration of toxic metals in the soil may be responsible for the elevated spore populations. The observed elevation of B. cereus spore populations near these gold deposits indicates that the method should be further investigated as a potential exploration tool.

Five sulfide minerals from the Magiwnt mine, southeast Missouri were analyzed for 31 trace elements in over 300 samples by laser microprobe spectrographic analysis of polished sections. The concentration of several trace elements shows a pattern of progressive variation with depth (space) and variation with different paragenetic stages (time) of each mineral. Factor analysis of the geochemical data shows sympathetic correlation both in space and in time of Bi, Cd, Ge, and Sn in galena and sphalerite, and Ni and Co in sphalerite and marcasite.

Coal-cleaning operations commonly produce a fine-waste stream containing a considerable amount of coal. The recovery of this coal is normally not economical because the coal is mixed with large amounts of difficult-to remove clay slimes and is often heavily oxidized or contaminated. Conventional froth-flotation machines cannot, in a single flotation stage, produce an acceptable product from such material, and even flotation columns often have difficulty cleaning this type of feed. A new type of flotation column was designed specifically to deal with these problems, and a column of this design was installed and tested in a coal-cleaning plant in Ohio. The feed coal tested was the plant&apos;s tailings-thickener product. The coal was 80% -176 µm and had a heating value of 8401 Btu/ lb. The coal contained 39.8% ash, as fine clay, and 2.83% total sulfur. Because previous attempts at conventional flotation of this type of material had been abandoned, plant personnel believed that the coal was too heavily oxidized and contaminated for flotation to be effective. However, by using the new column it was possible to recover up to 85% of the calorific value in a product containing < 11 % ash, and it was possible to recover 60% of the calorific value in a product containing <8% ash. In addition, the bulk of the pyritic sulfur was also rejected from the coat.

Electric utilities depend heavily on coal as a major fuel source for power generation, annually producing more than 85 million tom of ash, boiler slag and FGD (flue gas desulfurization - "scrubber") materials as by-products. Utilities and others who bum coal have traditionally disposed of these by-products in ponds or landfills. However, in the last 10-15 years there has been a greatly increased emphasis on beneficial utilization of these materials by the producers themselves as well as by customers who purchase the by-products. Regulatory, cost and technical performance issues currently impact the use of coal ash and other coal combustion by-products (CCB).

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research on a dual leaching method that offers the potential for the economic recovery of the silver as well as the manganese contained in some of the domestic manganiferous silver deposits. The method is an initial leach of the manganese with aqueous SO2 followed by a neutralization rinse, and then by a second leach for the extraction of silver with cyanide solution. Refractory silver in these ores is either bound by the high-valence manganese, chemically resistent to cyanide leaching, or is rendered inaccessible to cyanide leach solution by the surrounding manganese mineralization. Less than 10 pct of the silver was extracted when -1 in +1/2 in (-2.5 cm + 1.3 cm) ore pieces were leached directly with cyanide. However, extractions of 25 to 82 pct for silver and 65 to 96 pct for manganese were attained in laboratory column leach tests using the dual method on the same size ore pieces from six domestic deposits.

Pennsylvania,, due to its location in the humid east, is fortunate to possess within its borders large quantities of water. Most of the State is drained by three major river systems-the Ohio, Susquehanna and Delaware. This abundant supply of surface water has been widely utilized throughout the State, but today other sources of water must be developed due to the increasing demands for water, die largest undeveloped source of water in Pennsylvania is ground water. Pennsylvania is also fortunate to possess extensive coal resources. These coal resources have contributed measurably to the development and prosperity of the States Coal and water&apos;s - two valuable resources - have been necessary for the development and industrialization of Pennsylvania, The State needs both resources but can no longer afford to develop one while adversely affecting or destroying the other, We are aware of the effect of coal mining on surface water, but coal mining can also materially affect subsurface water, This effect will according&apos; to the local geologic conditions.
