Experiments were carried out to determine the efficacy of bubble column flocculation. An acid-base neutralization method was used to determine the mixing time in a 0.064- by 1.5-m bubble column equipped with a Mottporous sparger. The mixing times decreased as the tracer injection point approached the gas sparger. Preliminary flocculation experiments on two clay samples were carried out. The effects of frother addition and airflow rate are presented and discussed.

INTRODUCTON James Howden first secured an order for two Service Tunnel Boring machines in November 1986. These Tunnel Boring machines were 5.7 and 5.4 metres in diameter and the full length including back up was 215 metres. Manufacture commenced in December 1986 at the Glasgow factories of James Howden & Company with the deliveries to site of the machines in September 1987 and March 1988 respectively. In December 1987 two further orders were secured for the land running tunnels at 8.7 metres diameter. This paper presents some of the challenges in building tunnel boring machines for the Eurotunnel project between Britain and France. The general specifications of the Tunnel Boring machines and length of drives are shown in Appendix 1. DESIGN PARAMETERS The specification given by the Consortium TML on behalf of their client Eurotunnel cleary indicated that cutting of the face should be concurrent with the building of the precast concrete lining rings. In order to do this a telescopic machine was thought to be the best solution. Ground conditions were described as chalk marls of homogeneous nature with the possibility of friable areas and some revelling. The trends in dust exposure levels and longwall production over the last 20 years were examined. The study was conducted for nine major underground coal mining states: Alabama, Colorado, Illinois, Kentucky, Ohio. Pennsylvania, Utah, Virginia and West Virginia. The dust exposure and shift production data were obtained from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Trends were identified and analyzed for the headgate, tailgate, jack setter and shearer operator positions. The relationships between average scam height and dust exposure levels as well as the percentage of dust samples exceeding the dust standard for the four occupations were examined. The concentration to production ratio, a better indicator of the success of dust control measures, was calculated for the 20-Year period. The data show that, in general, dust exposures over the last two decades hare decreased. However, it appears that much of the decrease was in states that had significantly high dust exposure levels (such as Alabama and Utah), while for states such as Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania, the decrease was not as dramatic. Major reductions were made in the period starting in 1982, when a host of longwall dust control techniques was introduced. However, nearly 35% of jack setter and shearer operator dust exposures were still above 2 mg/m3 in 1990, with nearly 20% of tailgate operator exposures and 8% of headgate operator exposures being above the federal standard. The concentration/production ratio has shown a remarkable decrease since 1981. This indicates that long wall operators have been able to meet increased production as well as, to a large extent, control chest production at the face. An analysis of the relationship between average seam height and dust concentration for the years 1984 and 1990 shows that while in 1984, the dust concentration could be correlated to seam height, in 1990 the relationship was less definitive. This indicates that technological factors may be more important than seam height.

In 1993, the United States' economy grew at a rate of about 3%. The Gross Domestic Product rose to $6.4 trillion. With more than 258 million people - 599,000 in mining including petroleum - the United States has more than 100 million dwelling units and more than 190 million licensed motor vehicles. New private housing starts rose 7% to 1.3 million units, new car production fell 3% to 5.5 million units and truck and bus production rose 21 % to 4.9 million units. The rate of inflation was under 3% and the prime rate of interest 6%. The Producer Price Index (1982 = 100) was unchanged from 1992 for fuels and re¬lated products and power at 80 and met¬als and metal products at 119, while chemicals and allied products rose 2% to 128 and non-metallic mineral prod¬ucts rose 2% to 120. The merchandise trade deficit rose 27% to $116 billion.

In processing heavy mineral sands, the low feed concentration and respective high value of the desired minerals require high capacity production and sharp classification/separation techniques to reduce the specific production costs. The allflux® separator, a new process system introduced to the heavy mineral industry, meets these criteria in an economical way. Its two-stage process, a combination of rising current and fluidized bed technology, allows the treatment of extremely high massflows in a single unit. Using concepts that have proven successful in processing concrete sands for many years, testwork in coal, iron ore, and heavy minerals looks very promising.

Appalachian coal mines include operations in eastern Kentucky, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia. During 1994, they produced a total of about 342.5 Mt (377.6 million st) of bituminous coal. This figure represents 37% of the total production from the United States. This region contains nearly all of the nation's coking coal reserves and high-quality compliance steam coal that will be in demand after the turn of the century as utilities comply with phase two of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendment. Figure 1 shows the location of the study area and the general regions that supply various coal types. Data for the study reviewed here were compiled and interpreted from Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) production reports, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission 423 reports, King's Export database and additional data from the US Department of Energy's (DOE) Energy Information Administration (EIA). Table I is an overview of the total production from Appalachia and the delivered tonnage to various sales categories.

The influence of the collector structure on the amine (RNH2, R=alkyl) flotation of quartz has been systematically investigated using a modified Hallimond microflotation cell. This study focuses on the effect of varying chain length, branching in the alkyl group R, polyfunctionality of the collector molecule, and alkyl substitution on the nitrogen atom. In addition, adsorption at the solution/air interface and electrokinetic results for the solid/solution interface were employed to further elucidate the role and the interrelation of the structural parameters in the flotation process. Estimates of an electrical double layer attractive energy between the bubble and the solid particle are made.

The kinetics of electrodeposition of gold from dilute solutions of alkaline KAu(CN)2 at different gold and free cyanide concentrations on a gold rotating disk electrode were investigated by use of a steady-state linear potential scan technique. The design and performance of a laboratory electrowinning cell with a reticulated nickel cathode, operating in the flow-through mode, for the removal of low levels of gold ions from aqueous cyanide media is described. During the batch recirculation of oxygen-free gold cyanide solutions, the gold concentration was reduced from 10 ppm to <0.5 ppm with current efficiencies of up to 80%. The influence of solution flow rate through the cathode and of the pore size of the reticulated nickel foam is discussed. The removal of gold ions from solutions of low ionic strength was also investigated.

The conversion to the use of commercial grade ammonium nitrate (CGAN) for use in blasting at the Utah Copper Pit of the Kennecott Copper Corporation has presented unique problems for the Drilling and Blasting Department, In order to better understand these problems, a&apos; picture of the Bingham Pit might be helpful. Some quarter of a million tons of ore and waste must be blasted daily in order to keep thirty-eight electric shovels operating. All material is blasted by "toe holes" of 24 to 28 feet in depth, drilled from prepared drill grades and sloped so as to bottom approximately 5 feet below the bench level. Horizontal spacing of these holes averages 22 feet, with exceptions being made where faults occur in the bank. These "toe holes" are drilled by 4-inch drifter machines, mounted on self-contained mobile drill units using .3-inch starter bits and bottoming at a minimum of 2 1/2 inches in diameter, "Toe-hole" drilling amounts to about two-thirds of the total drilling. In the higher bank sections of the Mine and wherever necessary, single rows of "down holes" are drilled to 28 feet in depth and spaced, on the average 23 feet apart. These holes are also drilled by a mobile drill. "Down hole" drilling amounts to about one-third of the total drilling.

Investigations have been carried out to evolve a grinding aid useful in grinding a 40% iron-bearing magnetite containing quartz as the major gangue, based on studies conducted with pure magnetite, pure quartz and its synthetic mixture. These investigations established that an addition of 200 g of CaO per metric ton of ore was the most effective in grinding quartz preferentially over magnetite at 75% solids concentration by weight. The limited rheological studies conducted suggest that the effect could either be due to dispersion or the structural modification of quartz. More importantly, a new concept, that of Critical Solids Concentration, where two different minerals behave like one with respect to response to communication in a tumbling mill, has been introduced for the, first time. Above this concentration, one of the minerals is ground at a faster rate than the other, whereas the reverse is the case below this concentration.

"The Deep Ocean Resources Development Co. Ltd. (DORD) of Japan signed a 15-years contract with the International Seabed Authority for exploration of polymetallic nodule in a 75,000 km2 area, consisting of West and East Areas in the Clarion and Clipperton Fracture Zone in 2001. The exploration work is now concentrated in resource estimation of the first generation of mining area, the High Abundance Area.A detail survey of the Model Area, set in the High Abundance Area, was conducted using AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) equipped with MBES (Multi-Beam Echo Sounder), SSS (Side Scan Sonar), Sub-Bottom Profiler (SBP) and still camera. The seafloor topographic map based on 1 m grid data was produced in an area of approximately 80 km2 (Figure 1). Photographs, continuously covering the seafloor taken by AUV along two west-east trending traverse lines, together with detail seafloor topographic map produced from MBES give an excellent opportunity to observe distribution manner of pollymetalic nodule related to topographic features. This helps to understand more accurate resources estimation of a whole area of the High abundance Area. Furthermore, information of micro-topography gives ideas for conducting ore collecting operation and designing ore collector."

In world-wide mining circles countries become known by the principal minerals they produce. The production of iron, copper, phosphate and sulphur in the United-States-has-been particularly significant and has provided the base for aggressive developments in heavy industry, agriculture and chemicals. Mention diamonds and gold-and you will think--South Africa; silver-Mexico; nickel and asbestos--Canada. The main purpose of this paper is to point out that potash mast be added to the list of minerals by which Canada is known in the mining World. The potash deposits of western Canada must be classed as a major world source of chemical fertilizer raw material. We believe that they are both the largest and the richest of all known deposits in the world. The most knowledgeable people in the industry avoid making estimates of reserves because even where the arithmetic is correct the total is so large that it appears to be ridiculous. In 1957 Marion Goudie made a carefully qualified estimate of 6 billion tons of recoverable potash above 3,500 ft, and grading 25 per cent K20 or better. This figure can now be increased by the amounts available through solution mining. No one has bothered to estimate how much this is because it is so large that the actual amount is not significant.

Spiral separators are commonly used to upgrade sand-sized particles in both the coal and mineral processing industries. Many plants utilize multiple stages of cleaning and/or scavenging spirals to improve recovery and/or final product grade. Field studies suggest, however, that the layout of industrial spiral circuits is often less than optimal. This oversight can usually be attributed to a failure by plant designers to consider fundamental process engineering rules that govern the layout of complex separation circuits. This article reviews some of these important rules as specifically applied to multistage spiral circuit design. Two industrial case studies, one involving the upgrading of heavy mineral sands and a second involving the cleaning of fine coal, are presented to illustrate the impact of good design protocols on spiral circuit performance.

Qualitative and interpretive information as obtained from geological and/or geophysical studies, in addition to precise measurement, is incorporated into the estimation process through an indicator variable. The indicator conditioned estimator is formulated as a cokriging, and its expression is data value dependent as opposed to that of the traditional kriging estimators. The solution of the dual cokriging system provides simultaneously an estimate of the unknown and an estimate of the conditional probability that the unknown belongs to a specific population or class. Being an unbiased and minimum-error-variance estimator by construction, the indicator conditioned estimator is better in the least square sense than the ordinary kriging estimator because it uses additional information carried by the indicator data. A case study using a large reference database is presented; the indicator conditioned estimates have a smaller conditional bias and a smaller error variance than the ordinary kriging estimates. The results also showed that the indicator conditioned estimator is more efficient for selection in mining.

GEOLOGICAL NOTES The area under discussion is situated approximately 150 m north of Loraine No. 3 shaft at ± 1500 m below surface. The block being mined extends from about halfway between 50 and 52 levels to just below 48 level (see Fig. 1). The EB reefs form the lower portion of the EB zone of the Elsburg series and in the 81 line area the various conglomerate bands show the best development. Up to 18 separate reef bands are developed and the distance from the bottom conglomerate band to the top is ± 26 m. The thickness of the quartzite which forms the middling between the various reef bands varies from 0.1 to 2 m. The strike is roughly north-¬south. The reef bands are payable individually. However, owing to the steepness of the reefs and their close prox¬imity, conventional mining would prove very difficult. The nonpayable reef bands all carry varying amounts of gold and the whole area is a massive payable reef body approximately 26 m wide and 60 m high at 300 to 400 m on strike. The major structure of the area consists of a north¬-south trending syncline. The western flank of the syncline has a steep easterly dip, in places approaching the vertical. This flank cuts out against the overlying rocks of the EA zone. The latter forms a noncon¬formity with the underlying EB zone. The eastern flank of the syncline dips to the west at an average dip of 0.17 rad (10°). The 0.1 rad (6°) north-plunging syncline was sub¬jected to severe faulting. The most important are the Nos. 4 and 10 faults, both of which have a roughly north-south strike. The No. 4 fault dips to the west at an angle of 1.04 rad (60°) with a downthrow of approximately 150 m to the west. The dip of the No. 10 fault is 0.69 to 0.81 rad (40° to 50°) west, with the western block having moved 150 m updip relative to the eastern block. The EB reefs are being mined by the sublevel stoping method down from the sub-outcrop position to the cutoff against the No. 4 fault. On the downthrow side of the No. 10 fault, that is just above the 54 level, two reef bands are payable and will be mined conven¬tionally. ROCK MECHANICS From the section in Fig. 1, it can be seen that the area under consideration is surrounded by stoped-out areas. This will naturally change the stress distribution extensively. The only way to calculate the stress field for such a geometry is to use the finite element method. It was established that this method worked for the present geometry and so the method was applied to predict the stress behavior of the final geometry. From the results, it appeared that the effect of the old stopes was to destress the area. There are, however, some areas-such as the 50 and 48 north footwall haulages-which will require continuous attention. Recent U.S. mine disasters identified a need for improved training of miners in escape from mine fires and explosions. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health?s (NIOSH) Spokane Research Laboratory (SRL) have designed fire-escape training software for use in a mine-safety training course. The software allows four trainees to work together in a virtual world via a computer network. Trainees responded favorably and showed a marked improvement in locating the proper evacuation routes on subsequent trials. In collaboration with the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL), a more elaborate fire evacuation scenario is being developed. I wish to submit this discussion item on an article published in the August issue of MINING ENGINEERING by Wala and Altman on the use of canonical diagrams for mine ventilation networks. The advent of computer graphics and plotting has enabled complex underground mine layouts to be displayed and plotted in a variety of three-dimensional formats that very closely represent the actual mine layout. This enables the ventilation engineer, who is familiar with the mine, to display the network pressures, quantities, resistances, and fan locations in a way that can be understood by everyone working at the mine. This is important if the ventilation engineer needs to discuss changes in ventilation with production personnel, or escapeway procedures with union personnel. While I can see some of the potential advantages in the canonical ventilation network diagram described by Dr. Wala, it appears to me that the fact that the diagram has no visual equivalence with the actual mine layout means that most mine personnel will find such a diagram almost incomprehensible. The authors have alluded to certain advantages with the canonical diagram. However, I find it difficult to see that these outweigh the fact that almost everything listed can be duplicated in isometric diagrams, and in a manner that is easily understandable to everyone in the mine from the miner to the mine manager. Perhaps the authors could show a clear example comparing an isometric with a canonical portrayal of a mine network showing the information that is immediately available from the canonical network that is not obvious in the isometric diagram. There is in this country a severe problem with the need for ventilation engineering and expertise to be used and accepted by mine management as a necessary part of mine planning. It seems to me that to introduce the requirement for further explanation so that management can understand a canonical network display will hinder more than help the recognition that ventilation engineering needs at so many mines in this country. However, I can see that the canonical approach does have its place in assisting the practicing mine ventilation engineer, wherever he or she exists in the organization chart for a typical mine. In this case, could the authors please indicate the availability of the computer program to compute and plot the canonical diagram for a mine ventilation network.

In 1990, a residential area above the North Outfall Sewer (NOS) tunnel constructed in 1924, experienced subsidence. After sewage was diverted into the North Outfall Replacement Sewer (NORS), soil probing from within the tunnel was conducted, soil-improvement options were developed, and a preferred grouting scheme was analyzed by numerical modeling to evaluate the stability of the 80-year+ old tunnel liner under grouting-induced loading conditions. This paper discusses the initial field investigation and the development and analysis of a grouting scheme originally intended to be implemented before relining of the tunnel. The scheme was later modified, and the new liner was installed before the final probing and grouting work was done.

The integration of the ESZ orebody and DOZ orebody resulted in a much larger footprint than the original DOZ Mine shape. The significant change in footprint geometry presented new cave front management challenges, specifically: longer undercut drifts. Using a constant blasting rate, more time is required to complete caving in each drift which ultimately influences the number of active faces at any point in time. The number of manageable active drifts is controlled by the planned square-meters of undercut blasting, lead/lag restrictions and other specific conditions such as the need to blast pre-charged explosives. In early 2008, an evaluation of the existing plan showed that significantly more active undercut drifts and longer cave fronts would occur in the next five years. Difficulties associated with the long cave fronts led to a decision to redesign the caving sequence. Several different boundary options based on operational, geotechnical and ore grade parameters were investigated. This paper describes the issues faced with long cave fronts, the constraints and requirements to effectively manage the caving sequence and the options considered to mitigate this situation.

Phosphate mining in Florida generates approximately 100,000 tons/day of phosphatic clays (slime). This waste slime not only creates one of the most difficult disposal problems in the mining industry, but also causes tremendous loss of P2O5. About 20-30% of the phosphate mined end up in phosphatic clays. Recovering the phosphate from this waste is difficult for two main reasons: 1) the slime is extremely fine in size, and 2) clay minerals account for almost half of the material. A half dozen dispersants were evaluated for keeping the clay minerals suspended for subsequent separation from non-clay minerals by either settling or cycloning. The separation efficiency and economics are discussed.
