Diethylenetriamine (DETA) is a selective depressant for nickeliferous pyrrhotite during pentlandite flotation. Laboratory flotation tests conducted on ore and process samples showed that pyrrhotite rejection is greatly improved by small additions of DETA; however, the effectiveness of this depressant is most noticeable when the mineral sample is oxidized. LIMS and XPS analyses conducted on flotation products and pyrrhotite specimens showed that the difficulty in pyrrhotite rejection arises from inadvertent activation of the mineral by heavy metal ions, such as Ni2+, cu2+ and Ag+, that are present in the process water. In the presence of DETA, however, the mineral is deactivated under oxidizing conditions. The deactivation mechanism may involve oxidation of the activation products, which are likely in the form of heavy metal sulfides, followed by solubilization by DETA. FTIR spectra of pyrrhotite electrodes contacted with DETA showed no trace of the reagent on the surface, substantiating the view that its role is one of complexing agent that enhances the dissolution of activation products under oxidizing conditions. FTIR spectra of pyrrhotite contacted with amyl xanthate solutions showed that both dixanthogen and iron xanthate are formed on the surface, the latter becoming more predominant at higher potentials. In the presence of DETA, however, only a small amount of xanthate is adsorbed on the mineral at potentials (Eh) approximately 200 mV higher than the case without DETA.

Pittsburgh No. 8 coal, cleaned by conventional froth flotation, was oxidized in a 2-L Parr stirred bench-top autoclave. Autoclave tests were carried out for up to 5 hrs under the following conditions: 150 to 225ºC, 60 to 500 psi 02 and 15 to 60 g of coal per 600 mL of distilled water. The oxidation of coal was evaluated by measuring the total acidic group formed on the surface of the coal and by measuring the adsorption (under standard conditions) of calcium ion from a solution. The degree of oxidation of the coal increased continuously, without much leveling off, with increasing oxygen pressure. With increasing temperature, the oxidation of the coal increased sharply between 150 to 175ºC and then leveled off above 175 °C. The adsorption of calcium was >3% on coal oxidized under the most favorable conditions. The adsorption of calcium on coal increased sharply with increasing equilibrium pH. The loss in Btu was found to be sensitive to oxidation temperature. This study concluded that the optimum oxidation of coal is achieved over 3 hrs at high oxygen pressures (e.g., 500 psi) at ~170ºC. This study also concluded that, when measured in terms of calcium adsorption, Btu loss and reaction time, the oxidation achieved in an autoclave is far superior to that achieved in a fluidized bed.

The dispersion of oily collector has a significant effect on the flotation recovery of ultrafine coal. Generally, reagent dispersion is accomplished by mechanical mixing and/or ultrasonic agitation, followed by direct addition of dispersed collector into the flotation cell. Such dispersion and reagent addition techniques are invariably inadequate and nonselective. A new collector addition technique involving gas phase transport of atomized collector has shown improved results when compared to conventional reagent addition techniques. This technique involves atomization of the collector into the air stream. Under these circumstances, an aerosol is introduced into the flotation cell. Initially, the oil is dispersed within the air phase (continuous with respect to oil), and the air phase is dispersed within the pulp (continuous with respect to aerosol). In the flotation cell, the atomized oil droplets coalesce on the bubble's surface and create a de facto oil-encapsulated bubble. This approach provides excellent dispersion, increases selectivity, and, most significantly, increases the flotation rate of ultrafine coal. Atomization of collector/frother combinations yielded improved flotation recovery and maintained near uniform froth levels, which is a desirable feature in coal flotation. Microscopic examinations of the attachment of oil- coated bubbles at a coal surface were conducted by attachment time and contact angle measurements. Oil-coated bubbles attach at significantly faster rates and with a higher contact angle than oil-free bubbles.

The study of the apatite deposits of the Aldan Shield shows wide spread of the Precambrian apatite-carbonate ores and possibilities of using them for extraction of apatite. Dependency of flotation on ore minerals was studied according to the following scheme: preparation of the monomineralic samples of anhydrite, gypsum, chlorite, serpentine, phlogopite, apatite; mixing them in apatite ore of the average composition; followed by flotation. Another series of the experiments was conducted to ascertain a dependence of flotation activity of the different minerals on the different flotation reagents, which were used as collectors. It has been shown that apatite from silicate-carbonate ores is most extractable because it has the biggest size of grains and is the most free of inclusions. Beneficiation of the sulphate-containing apatite-carbonate rocks is possible when flotol - 7.9 is used as a collector. Meanwhile, the use of the tallaktam leads to an increase in the sulphate recovery. The estimation of individual technological features of the layered Mghydrosilicates and their influence on the process of beneficiation has been examined using samples of apatite-dolomite ore (P205-8%) with the addition of the phlogopite, serpentine and chlorite. The results show that there is little influence of the chlorite presence on the flotation while the serpentine presence leads to a decrease of the flotation, because of its high specific surface area.

"With the depletion of easily minable coal seams, less favorable reserves under adverse conditions have to be mined out to meet the market demand. Due to several historical reasons, a large amount of remnant coal was left unrecovered. One such case history occurs with the remnant rectangular stripe coal pillars using partial extraction method at Guandi Coal Mine, Shanxi Province, China. The challenge that the coal mine is facing is that there is an ultra-close coal seam right under it, with an only 0.8 to 1.5 m sandstone dirt band in between the two. The simulation study was carried out to investigate the simultaneous recovery of upper remnant coal pillars while mining the ultra-close lower panel using longwall top coal caving (LTCC). The remnant coal pillar was induced to cave in as top coal in LTCC system. Physical modelling shows that the coal pillars are the abutments of the stress arch structure formed within the overburden strata. The stability of overhanging roof strata highly depends on the stability of the remnant coal pillars. The gob development (roof strata cave-in) is intermittent with the cave-in of these coal pillars and the sandstone dirt band. FLAC3D numerical modelling shows that the multiple seam interaction has a significant influence on mining-induced stress environment for mining of lower panel. The pattern of the stress evolution on the coal pillars with the advance of the lower working face was found. This demonstrates that the stress relief of a remnant coal pillar enhances the caveability of the pillars and sandstone dirt band below them.INTRODUCTIONChina is one of the world’s coal-rich countries. Coal has played a significant role in the growth of China’s economy. Coal reserves have been mined commercially in China for over one hundred years. The demand for coal in China is still going to grow at a relatively high rate (BP Energy Outlook, 2019). Long-term large-scale and intensive coal mining activities have created tension between increased demand and limited resources (Bai et al., 2018). Easily minable coal seams such as sub-horizontal, tabular, and laterally extensive coal seams are being depleted, and therefore the remaining reserves are becoming less favorable. However, in many situations, the coal reserves under adverse conditions have to be mined out to meet the market demand for energy.Due to sedimentary environments and geological conditions, many coal seams are interspersed with sedimentary bands, or partings both within an individual seam and between seams. These bands and partings lead to appearance of ultra-close coal seams, as well as giving rise to considerable variation in their structural and mechanical properties (Ghabraie and Ren, 2016). Difficulties are encountered in the mining of such coal seams. If ultra-close coal seams are mined sequentially, that requires the design of a mining system for each individual coal seam; also, a large number of gateroads have to be excavated, which is not a high-efficiency option. If ultra-close coal seams are mined at a great mining height at once, for instance, using longwall top coal caving—a longwall mining method that is widely used in China for the mining of ultra-thick coal seams—then the location and characteristics of the band would have a significant influence on success of their extraction."

The subsidence and deformation characteristics of strata with thick unconsolidated overlying strata is quite different from that with consolidated overlying strata. In this paper, based on the engineering background of large mining height mining in No.21 coal seam of Zhaogu No.2 Coal Mine in Henan Province, China, the PFC 2D numerical simulation and surface subsidence field observation was conducted to study the subsidence characteristics of strata with thick unconsolidated overlying strata (680m). Numerical model with dimensions of 2000m 750m was established and mining process with different working face lengths (150 m,200 m,250 m,300 m) and different working face advancing distances (40 m,80 m,120 m,160 m,200 m,240 m,280 m,320 m,360 m,400 m,440 m,480 m) were simulated. The surface subsidence characteristics and displacement field variation of rock strata under different working face advancing distances were observed and analyzed. The results show that with the advance of working face, the structure of subsidence-like basin will be formed in each rock stratum, and the influence range of mining on rock stratum is “bowl-shaped”, and the influence increases with the increase of advancing distance. The unconsolidated layer has a buffer effect on the mining-induced subsidence, and the buffer effect is realized by the expansion of the subsidence area. The movement law of strata under different working face lengths is similar to that under general mining, and the structure of subsidence-like basins will also be formed in each stratum. The influence range of strata after mining is ' bowl-shaped ', and the influence extent increases with the increasing of working face length; the internal subsidence of the unconsolidated layer is more intense and complex than that of the rock layer; the surface subsidence movement shows an obvious 'basin' phenomenon. The field observation data of surface subsidence also confirm the above results.

INTRODUCTION The early record of tunnel excavating machines in hard rock tunneling has not been one to particularly brag about. We have all heard the stories of major difficulties when trying to break hard rock with machines at promised advance rates of several times that of conventional drill and blast. Unfortunately, sometimes this has not happened. It has been through this trial of the past generations disappointments that today's TBM's have evolved to their present high level of performance in a wide range of ground conditions. Today's machines offer much increased reliability and durability. This translates into high availability to the tunnel contractor. Although there still are occasional disappointments being reported, the state of the art is that reliable and predictable machine excavation of rock now is both a reality and well founded expectation. The most recent editions of Atlas Copco's MINI/MIDI Fullfacer, we feel, make a strong contribution to the reliable performance of todays TBM's---especially in small-size rock tunnels. This report will, 1.) explain the equipment and effect of rock both on the cutting technique and machine performance; 2.) list advantages of the non-circular shape, during and after construction; 3.) list applications in civil and mining industries; 4.) discuss North American experiences, performance and costs; 5.) list advantages over drill and blast and; 6.) discuss briefly lease arrangements.

The Committee on Rapid Excavation of the National Research Council has recognized in its 1968 report the need for "improvement of rock-mechanics techniques for measuring subsurface stress field in deep boreholes and for determining stress distribution in walls of underground excavations". The technique recommended in this paper as being most suitable for both deep hole and tunnel wall stress determination is Hydraulic Fracturing. Using this method stresses are calculated directly from the fluid pressures necessary to initiate and extend a fracture away from a borehole. Stress determination by hydraulic fracturing is rather insensitive to inhomogeneity or anisotropy, is not limited in depth except by the length of the hole, requires simple equipment which is commercially available, and can be carried out by unskilled personnel. The method has been worked out theoretically and extensively tested and verified in the laboratory. A number of field tests in deep holes ranging from 300 to 6300 ft have yielded surprisingly good results. Preliminary underground tests have been very encouraging and most recent measurements in a tunnel complex at the Nevada Test Site yielded stresses that were both consistent and reasonable when compared with the expected directionsand magnitudes. It is recommended that hydraulic fracturing be considered as a method of in-situ stress measurement both in the pre-excavation stage of design and during tunneling.

Experiments were done to determine if a mushroom compost-based sulfate reduction system could be used to treat nickel-contaminated mine waters. Sulfate reduction systems were established in columns containing acid-washed mushroom compost. Simulated mine waters containing 2000 mg/L sulfate and 50 to 1000 mg/L nickel were adjusted to pH 4.5 and pumped through the columns at flow rates between 15 and 25 mL/hr. During the first nine days of operation, virtually all influent nickel was removed in the columns by sorption and ion exchange mechanisms. The nickel removal rate then dropped to 18 to 30 mg Ni/day (7.8 to 12.8 nmol/ g-substrate/day), probably due to low sulfate reduction rates. When sodium lactate was added to the inflow, a sustained and seven-fold increase in the nickel removal rate was observed. Bacterial sulfate reduction rates measured in mushroom compost-based wetlands exposed to coal mine drainage are 2 to 20 times faster than the rates observed in this study. Low sulfate reduction rates in the columns may have been due to the inhibition of microbial activity by high nickel concentrations and the removal of labile organic compounds from the mushroom compost substrate during acid-washing. Results of this study indicate that bacterial sulfate reduction can effectively treat nickel concentrations up to 500 mg/L if labile carbon is nonlimiting.

This paper outlines a proposed research project to investigate secondary sulphide ignitions. Sulphide dust explosions have resulted in loss of production and considerable capital and equipment replacement cost in Canadian mines. The practical application of laboratory test results to actual mine situations presents a complex problem and is a field requiring immediate investigation. The factors contributing to the outbreak of sulphide ignitions are not clearly understood. This indicates a need for future research to study the influence of blasting parameters, exhaust temperatures, and dust characteristics on secondary ignitions at source. The aim is to establish realistic quantities for each of the parameters and develop a model that will incorporate field and laboratory quantities. It may be possible to predict outcomes of sulphide ignitions when the parameters are known. It is also planned to study the techno-economic feasibility of the preventive and control methods. One aspect of planned future research requires quantification of some terms by obtaining measurements of pollutant concentrations and size distribution of the airborne dust in an underground environment immediately after a main blast. A blast-proof aerosol sampling package to measure the source term will be designed. This sampling package will consist of a sampling section and a shield which will be capable of withstanding a blast explosion. The accuracy in measuring the variables and combination of variables will be the main focus in this proposed study.

The present work emphasizes the selection in the separation of the apatite/calcite by the direct anionic flotation versus the double flotation, with a reverse second stage of the Jacupiranga phosphate ore. The double flotation would allow the obtaining of two concentrated solutions: one of them mainly constituted by a calcium carbonate material (CaCO3) and the other one, phosphatic (apatite). The calcium carbonate concentrated solution is used for the production of cement. The presence of phosphatic material in the calcium solution is not desirable, phosphor being a harmful element to cement. On the other hand, smaller quantities of calcite in the phosphate concentrate would represent a substantial economy in the processes of production of phosphated fertilizers. These processes make use of sulfuric acid to the solubilization of the apatite and the presence of calcium material consumes acid. Also that, when carbonates are solubilized, unwanted products are formed resulting in losses in the process and diminishing the quality of the fertilizer produced. These characteristics are discussed in the paper and are compared to another Brazilian phosphate ore, the reverse route of which can be considered more adequate. The results are discussed according to recent discoveries, and special emphasis is given to the use of corn starch and its crucial role in promoting the selection in the direct flotation process.

Risk can generally be defined as the possibility or chance of a loss corresponding to uncertainty. Analysis is the process for examining the components and relationships of a complex system in order to determine the impacts of its variables. Risk analysis is therefore a course of action taken to analyze multiple variables of a system that is subject to speculative outcome. When risk analysis is applied to mine development, it becomes the means for assessing and measuring those parameters that contribute to economic viability. Mining can be a risky business. It is composed of an assortment of factors that contribute to its financial outcome. Of these factors, the most consequential output is the net present value (NPV). Applying risk analysis in mine development can identify those factors having the most significant impacts and applying limits to those impacts. Mathematical computer modeling using Monte Carlo techniques is available and can be customized to suit specific mine development ventures. Essentially, those parameters that are not fixed values can have input variability. Rationally deduced engineering estimates should be the basis for determining the initial values applied as inputs in the models. Risk analysis therefore provides the user a means to identify, rationalize and assess the risks in mine development in an informed, calculated, and unbiased format for making economic decisions.

INTRODUCTION The effectiveness of collector type on sulfide mineral flotation is generally determined by the amount and type of functional groups of collector molecules that interact with surface and water at the mineral/collector/water/gas interface. The final interfacial state when bubble contact takes place is preceded by chemical and physical reactions that involve these gas/liquid/solid interactions. These interactions differ not only for different minerals, solution and gas composition, but also for different collector molecules. The purpose of this paper is primarily to summarize the developments and status of short (C2-C6) and long (C12) chain, aliphatic collectors that contain three sulfur atoms in their polar function. These are trithiocarbonates (TT'Cs). For purposes of comparison, similarities in molecules containing 0, N and S are compared. Mostly short chain ionic collectors molecules of dithiocarbonates (DTCs) and TT'Cs were compared. The studies, largely bench scale flotation and plant testing, were carried out on ores containing Cu, Ni, Au, and PGM's. Studies of long chain 'ITC collectors are reported on Ni, PGM and auriferous pyrite ores containing uranium. Under starvation dosage conditions, surface activity coefficients of short chain collector molecules and interacting water were calculated. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has completed a laboratory evaluation of exhaust emissions from a diesel engine using an oxygenated diesel fuel. The fuels tested were soy methyl esters in a neat (100%) form and low sulfur, petroleum number 2 diesel fuel (D2). The engine tested was a Caterpillar 3304, indirect injection, naturally aspirated, 75 kW, diesel engine that is typical of engines used in underground mining applications. The objective was to determine the extent to which oxygenated fuels, such as methyl esters, reduce diesel particulate matter (DPM), and their influence on upon gaseous emissions such as total hydrocarbons, CO, NOx, NO2, formaldehyde, and other exhaust emissions. Heavy- and light-duty transient tests were used to simulate load cycles typical of mine applications. The soy methyl ester fuel produced greater amounts of volatile DPM (organic material) but much less nonvolatile DPM (carbon soot) for overall DPM reductions. A diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) typical of the type commonly used in metal and nonmetal mines was tested with both fuels. The DOC further reduced the volatile and total DPM when used with the soy methyl esters, but increased the total DPM for D2 due to sulfate formation. The soy methyl ester fuel reduced CO and hydrocarbon, and NOx emissions. The DOC further reduced CO and hydrocarbon emissions.

The electrochemical nature of mineral-collector interactions and their relationship to flotation have been investigated to develop a better understanding of the factors controlling sulfide mineral beneficiation. Spectrophotometric and electrochemical techniques have been used to examine the reactions occurring on electrodes composed of a bed of bornite particles in the presence and absence of potassium ethylxanthate (KEtX) at a pH of 9.2. The combined techniques showed that KEtX sequentially reacts with bornite by (1) a chemisorption reaction forming ca hydrophobic species between --0.4 and -0.2 V (SCE), (2) an electrochemical oxidation reaction forming cuprous xanthate between -- 0.2 V and the xanthate/ dixanthogen redox potential, and (3) oxidation to dixanthogen when the potential exceeds the reversible value for the xanthate/dixanthogen couple. The flotation response of bornite closely parallels spectrophotometric and electrochemical evidence for adsorption of KEtX by the reactions listed above. The degree of surface oxidation resulting from the formation of iron oxides on the surface dictates the flotation response as evidenced by the fact that oxidized bornite floats at more anodic potentials than unoxidized bornite. The strong correlations between the flotation response, degree of oxidation, and potential indicate that chemisorbed xanthate produces a hydrophobic layer sufficient to float unoxidized bornite, but cuprous xanthate and dixanthogen arc required to float oxidized bornite.

Introduction The minerals exploration business, like many businesses, is faced with the problem of valuing future, risky cashflows. These cashflows are derived from those mineral deposits which have been successfully commercialized. Many deposits, however, do not have the quantities or grade of ore to be considered economic at the projected metal prices using the traditional tools of the Capital Asset Pricing Model and discounted cashflow analyses. If one calculates the future revenues, costs and cashflows of one these marginal properties, and discounted it at the appropriate risk-adjusted discount rate, it may have a negative present value. Yet such a property may still have real, positive value in the marketplace. Why would a firm pay money for a property with an (apparent) minus present value? Mining properties such as these are bought and sold in arms- length transactions on a regular basis. Why is this so? Part of the reason relates to the nature of ore reserve information. To generate cashflows, the analyst must t assume that the reserve information is known with certainty when, in fact, reserves are not known with certainty. Mineral reserves are a function of commodity price, extraction costs and the level of (usually drilling) information about the reserves. This paper presents results from pilot-scale and field testing of an innovative technology that uses sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) to treat and control acid mine drainage (AMD). Sulfate-reducing bacteria, a common group of anaerobic bacteria, produce hydrogen sulfide and bicarbonate when supplied with sources of carbon and sulfate. Hydrogen sulfide reacts with metal ions in AMD, precipitating them as metal sulfides. The bicarbonate produced serves to help neutralize the drainage. Pilot-scale metal-removal efficiencies reached 99% for zinc, 99% for aluminum, 96% for manganese, 98% for cadmium and 96% for copper. However, the iron and arsenic removals were not as effective as the aforementioned metals. This was largely attributed to high levels of iron and arsenic that contaminating the organic substrate. There was evidence that both adsorption and sulfate reduction were occurring within the reactors. The SRB field demonstration involved using the flooded subsurface mine workings of the Lilly/Orphan Boy Mine near Elliston, MT, as an "in situ biological reactor." In the mine, high removal efficiencies were observed for aluminum, cadmium, copper and zinc (70% to near 100%) during the four years of monitoring. However, for reasons similar to the pilot scale testing, low removal efficiencies were observed for arsenic and iron. Sulfate reduction was evident by measured decreases in sulfate and the detection of soluble sulfide within the mine water.

Jigging of the -2.8 +0.7-mm size fraction of a friable, low-grade manganese ore sample from Andhra Pradesh increased the Mn content of a concentrate by 7% to 8%, with an average recovery of 57%. The jig concentrate was mixed with the unjigged -0.7-mm size fraction and ground to -150 µm. The sample was then subjected to wet high-intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS). The magnetic fraction thus obtained showed an increase in Mn content of 6%, but with an overall recovery of only 50%. The results of hydrocyclone classification of -150- µm ground ore indicated that the method is not capable of upgrading the manganese content, as both ferromanganese oxides and aluminosilicate gangue minerals constitute the fine size fraction. However, when the nonmagnetic fraction obtained from the WHIMS of -150- µm ore is subjected to hydrocyclone classification and the underflow obtained is subjected to WHIMS again, an overall recovery of about 50% to 52% is obtained with at least a 7% to 8% increase in the Mn content of the product. The phosphorus content in the product is not reduced by either of the two combinations of methods. The complex association of phosphorus with all the major phases in the ore has been clearly demonstrated from the linear correlation between the distribution ratios of major constituent phases and phosphorus.

Compressed air is a relatively inefficient yet very convenient vehicle for transmitting mechanical energy. It is inefficient when compared to, say, hydraulic or electric energy systems since compressor and pneumatic machine efficiencies are quite low (in the range 20-65%) and reticulation losses can be quite high unless adequate pipe diameters are used to minimize friction drops. It is convenient in that capital and maintenance costs of pipes and machines are exceptionally low, the equipment is flexible and lightweight, the technological level is simple, the form of the energy supply is intrinsic- ally safe, and as an additional minor but psychologically important benefit, it provides a ready source of cooling and air supply for emergency use in deep hot mines. It is for these reasons that compressed air is a premier source of energy for many forms of underground equipment, in particular hand or rig-mounted rockdrills, some forms of rock- handling equipment, and a host of minor applications including agitators, small-lift pumps and temporary f am installations. In a typical S. African deep-level gold or platinum mine, compressed air generation accounts for 15% of the total mine electrical energy bill - more than is used for hoisting. In these mines it is not uncommon for over 100 km of underground compressed air piping to be installed, primarily to supply handheld rockdrills.

One of the advantages of the market¬place, economists believe, is that it automatically generates information which would otherwise be hard to come by. For example; since market participants are voluntary actors, only those transactions are culminated in which a mutual gain occurs. This eliminates the need for some cost-benefit calculations. A corollary to this standard economic doctrine is that whenever a government or other party supplants a marketplace, it must generate some of the information either lost or newly-needed. (Schultze, 1977) In 1981, following a ten-year moratorium the United States government resumed leasing of publicly-owned coal. When the government designed this program, the goal was to guide the marketplace, rather than merely to respond, as a landlord, to the market's wishes. This goal has been modified somewhat, due both to the changing political climate and to the practical difficulties of implementing so ambitious an undertaking.
