It is the hope of the author that this paper, largely a compilation of observations and opinions built up over 20 years of experience in cold and remote areas may be of some help to others in designing better plants for the future in the north. The north is not as difficult to operate in as the better story tellers make it appear to be. ()n the other hand for 6 months of the year the cold is always there, and it seems to be waiting for someone to make a mistake. The simplest things can shut a multi-million dollar plant down at -4n' F with a 4n M.P.H, wind. It only takes one man door improperly latched to freeze up all the pumps on the bottom floor. Someone can poke a one inch hole in an outside wall in July and six months later while you are having Christmas dinner, a watchman will call up to report that the whole plant is flooded because the main water line just froze up and burst. Basic things to remember in plant design for cold and remote areas are: everything in these areas is more expensive due to long and difficult supply lines. Fuel is expensive and would be a major cost item even if it were not expensive, due to the extended periods of low temperatures. Building volumes should therefore he kept to an acceptable minimum. Service areas on the other hand must he adequate, because maintenance generally has to be conducted inside in a heated area. Supply vehicles for instance have to get completely inside the building to unload. If you try to unload a supply vehicle with the door open at -50° F, you won't be able to find the vehicle for fog and if you take more than 5 minutes half the water lines in the plant will freeze up. People in a remote area are expensive. The capital investment per employee may be as high as $30,000; with fringe benefits per annum costs of an employee will he as high as 812,000 per year regardless of basic wage rate. It

"The Wangjialing Coal Mine is the main colliery of the China Coal Huajin Energy Limited Liability Company. The average thickness of the coal seam in District 201 is 6.21 m. Fully mechanized longwall mining was used in this district. The ventilation roadway of panel 20102 was influenced by the retreat mining of the adjacent panel 20104. Therefore, large deformation and severe roof falls occurred in this roadway, seriously influencing the safety production of this coal mine. To support the roadway, cable truss was proposed to strengthen the reinforcement of this ventilation roadway. First, numerical simulation was used to optimize the reinforcement parameters, including the cable installation angle, cable length, and eccentric distance. Based on numerical simulation results, in-situ tests were conducted in the ventilation roadway of panel 20102 with the cable truss technology. In-situ monitoring results showed that the roof-to-floor convergence and the convergence of roadway on two sides were within the safety range. Furthermore, no apparent separations occurred in the roof. These indicate that based on the designed parameters, the cable truss system can effectively maintain the roadway stability under the severe influence of the adjacent longwall mining.INTRODUCTIONCable bolts are flexible tendons composed of multi steel wires, which are wound into a strand (Chen, Hagan, and Saydam, 2018). They were initially introduced in the hard rock mining industry in the 1960s. Later, they found rapid application in coal mines to maintain the stability of excavations (Wang et al., 2015).The standard cable bolt is composed of seven steel wires with a diameter of 15.2 mm. Laboratory and in-situ tests showed that there is a low bonding capacity between the standard cable bolt and the grout (Craig and Holden, 2014; Chen, Hagan, and Saydam, 2018). Then, modified cable bolts are developed based on the standard cable bolts. They are improved by changing the surface geometry of standard cable bolts, such as birdcaged cable bolts (Hutchins et al., 1990) or nutcaged cable bolts (Hyett et al., 1993). Further tests proved that modified cable bolts have better mechanical interlock and friction between the cable bolt and grout, leading to larger load transfer capacity of cable bolts.Although cable bolts have been used for many years, failure of the cable bolting system still occurs. A common failure mode is the damage of surrounding confining medium while the cable bolt is still hanging in the roof, which is caused by the bond failure of the cable/grout interface (Hutchinson and Diederichs, 1996). To prevent the cable bolting system from failing, the cable truss system is more widely used in mining engineering."

Comminution is one of the fundamentals of mineral processing, requiring large expenditures to be made on capital equipment, installation, power and maintenance. The trend toward lower grades and higher operating costs, mean mining operations are becoming increasingly marginal. The challenge is to improve and more importantly, utilize crushing and milling technologies that provide for reduced capital and operating costs whilst providing increased unit efficiencies. The Svedala Barmac Autogenous Crushing Mill presents such an opportunity by providing many of the cost savings and production increases required by its ability to produce a finer mill feed size and realize reduced energy consumption. This paper briefly describes the operation of the Svedala Barmac Autogenous Crushing Mill and reviews its benefits towards improving the efficiency of crushing and milling operations.

The World Health Organization (WHO) considers contamination from oxyanions, such as selenium and arsenic, a global concern. While their elemental forms are toxic, the aqueous oxyanions are more so. These aqueous forms, which exist at a higher oxidation state, are the most common forms released during mining processes. Many technologies are capable of meeting the governmental discharge criteria for oxyanionic contaminants, but may possess limitations due to redox chemistry as well as the water matrices. An innovative technology was developed that can successfully reduce such aqueous forms generated during mining processes to a level below the discharge criteria. This paper discusses how an understanding of the sensitivities of this novel adsorbent towards these variations in water matrices and redox chemistry can be used to optimize its application.

The results discussed last year revealed the effect of flocculant type and coal wettability on the filtration of ultrafine coal In this paper, the differences in dewatering between -25 µ m ultrafine and -500 µ m fine coal with addition of flocculants, surfactants and oil-emulsions in vacuum filtration are further investigated Significant differences were observed in the reduction of the cake moisture. The utilized emulsions were found to be very powerful and promising filtration aids for both ultrafine and fine fractions of hydrophobic and hydrophilic coal

How to quantitatively identify the loads on a square/arch set is a complicated issue in designing the square/arch set in an intersection/entry. From an engineering perspective, understanding the nature and support mechanism of standing support such as a square/arch set can not only help design the support structure to maintain the roof stability, but save the steel materials and costs of manufacturing, labor, and delivery. Based on the design practices in recent years and successful applications in slope bottom intersections, the authors are confident that the concept of interaction and confinement effect between the steel square/arch set and surrounding rocks is critical in designing a proper steel structure to support an intersection/entry. This paper will detail the design concept and its applications in several underground slope bottom intersection designs, reaching the goals of improving roof stability and reducing costs.

If you are contemplating starting a small coal mining operation there is a good possi¬bility that you can not afford it. If you, have already started, you may be on the road to bankruptcy. If you are a small but well established operator you may be trading dollars, or even dissipating your capital, equipment and other assets. A bleak outlook? Yes! Meant to be discouraging? No! Just a reminder that, with todays costs of doing business, high interest rates, rapidly increasing costs and decreasing sales prices, a small businessman/miner had best watch closely or he will be mired in something worse than a soft bottom - namely a cash and credit shortage, and in too many instances In recent times, bankruptcy. We will not dwell on what happens once you are that far gone, though I could cite a good example. But, let us look at what should be done to avoid such a catastrophe.

In an attempt to replace the traditional cyanide process of extracting gold, a new technology using ammoniacal solutions has been developed. In this study, the electrochemical behavior of gold in ammoniacal solutions at temperatures above 100°C has been investigated. An electrochemical cell in an autoclave has been introduced to carry out this study. The system consists of a gold working electrode, a platinum counter electrode, and an external saturated calomel electrode (SCE) which is connected to the autoclave system through a Birch wood plug. Techniques used in this study included potentiodynamic polarization, galvanostatic polarization, cyclic voltammetry, and Tafel polarization. The electrochemical reaction mechanisms governing the dissolution process are presented.

U.A. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) coal dust compliance data sometimes shows high silica levels at roof bolters. However, it is unclear whether this silica normally originates from the bolter itself or from other dust sources upwind of the bolter research studies to answer this question at individual mines have been conducted. However, operational practices vary from mine to mine thus, the information gleaned from any one study cannot be accurately extrapolated to describe silica dust sources in most mines. In this paper, three decades of bolter dust research are reviewed the results showed that, while inadequate maintenance on the bolter dust collection system can result in excessive dust, more likely reasons for high silica levels are inadequate ventilation of the mine entries being bolted and dust traveling downwind from the continuous miner to the bolter. The understanding of coal mine roof lithology is a critical component in the determination of engineering solutions for roof control. Coreholes were the first technology available to determine lithology of the roof in reserve areas, but coreholes are typically drilled 500–2,500 ft apart due to their cost and sometimes reach more than $125,000 dollars per hole, depending on mine conditions. The next method developed to bridge this gap was the fiber-optic scope which is utilized in the roof at the faces of underground development. High-end fiber-optic scopes can also be costly (20,000–40,000 dollars) but are more affordable than drilling a corehole, and the information can be processed immediately to make quick roof support determinations. The fiberscope can be operated wherever a roof bolter can drill a hole, and there are no restrictions related to property owners, proximity to streams, elevation changes, etc. The latest borescoping method utilized by mining companies is the use of videoscopes. Videoscopes and all borescopes in general are limited by the lengths of the scope and the length of the borehole drilled in the mine. Videoscopes have the advantage of being able to record video while examining the roof lithology. The information can be recorded quickly underground and then be examined on the surface which allows anyone to capture the video so that a geologist can make lithology descriptions without ever going underground. In the past, videoscopes had limited resolution, a short battery life, were fragile and were relatively costly. As technology progresses, videoscopes have become more affordable, have increased battery life, and offer enhanced 1080p resolution. With the broader availability of affordable videoscopes, videoscopes can be more readily used in various mine environments at every active section underground. This paper will discuss the types of videoscopes available, the features that will aid in lithology description/identification, the deployment methods pertaining to supplemental roof support recommendations, and an advanced methodology to enhance accuracy in understanding roof lithology.

"The Greater Paris projects involves the creation of a 200km extension of the actual public transport network on the close outskirt of Paris. In 2011, SYSTRA has been awarded the Engineering studies of a 20km underground section in the densely urbanized southeast quarter of the Parisian suburb. In order to both guide the TBM technology choice and identify and mitigate the risk due to soil settlement during tunnel boring, several analysis have been carried out and integrated into a Geographical Information System to share and manage this risk during the successive design phases of the project. The geological context‘s complexity and the Owner‘ requirements have led to the necessity of using an innovative analysis approach, leveraging both the numerical modelling analysis’s accuracy and the analytical method‘s ease of programming and implementation in a GIS, by the mean of the calibration of the analytical approach’ parameters on the FEM results.INTRODUCTIONThe Greater Paris Transport Project foresees the extension of the actual public transport network to the close outskirt of Paris through the extension lines 11 and 14, the creation of a circular new line around Paris - line 15 completed by lines 16 and 18 linking developing territories - and line 17 to Roissy-Charlesde- Gaulle airport.The SOCIETE DU GRAND PARIS (SGP) is the public institution that promotes this project and awards SYSTRA as Engineering for the 15th Line southeast section.Line 15th – South-East sectionIn 2011, the Owner SGP (SOCIÉTÉ DU GRAND PARIS) awarded to SYSTRA the preliminary and detailed design of a 20km-long underground section of Line 15, between the stations of Villejuif-Louis-Aragon and Noisy-Champs. The failure of coal ribs is a major hazard in underground coal mines. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have been working on the development of an engineering-based rib control method. A user-friendly standalone application, called Design of Rib Support (DORS), is being developed to ease the calculations of rib support. DORS can estimate the Primary Rib Support Density (PRSD, ton/ft2) for development loading. However, it still needs to take account of another key factor, bolt length, in rib support design. The bolt length can be estimated from the rib fracture depth, and this study focuses on the coal rib fracture depth analysis with numerical modeling and artificial neural network. A total of 331 FLAC3D simulations with different mining scenarios and rib conditions were conducted for this study. Machine learning was then used to predict coal rib fracture depth under different conditions. Based on the numerical simulations, the parameters for mining scenarios and rib conditions were collected as features for machine learning, and coal rib fracture depths were collected as the target to predict. Good data correlation (r-square) was obtained with the use of an artificial neural network. The

In this paper the phrase "exploration for blind metal deposits" refers to exploration activities geared to the discovery of metal deposits which cannot be located by visual surface inspection. The word "system" refers to all of the components (people, money, corporations, techniques, etc.) which collectively result in an exploration process. The details of the system or systems which I have employed in exploration will not be discussed because of client relationships. However, some of the more severe problems in exploration result from how the system's components interact and our attitudes as to what exploration data is telling us, if anything. It is these items which will be discussed. Exploration for blind metal deposits, which has been relatively intense over the last 2S years compared to rather minor outlays prior to World War II has often been an uncoordinated assortment of various specialists employing various techniques (see Dickerson -1). In a program geared to the location of blind deposits, the lack of outcropping deposits or occurrences should not be a deterrent to a well conceived and well planned program. The severe cyclical swings in exploration activity, although often coinciding with depressed metal prices, by and large result from the failure of exploration operators to present a coherent and realistic program to management. It is my opinion that the stream of complaints criticizing management for cyclical exploration support are mostly unwarranted, as many of the programs and goals are ill defined. Although depressed market conditions may serve as the catalyst for exploration cuts, the underlying cause is that when the "chips are down", the non-directional, non-specific nature of many programs is revealed. Thus management should not be castigated for eliminating such programs during bad times, but rather they should be castigated for supporting them during boom periods.

The effects of induced seismicity caused by mining activities are one of the main problems that the mining industry faces. Although it has been documented by countries with a great mining tradition (United States, Canada, Australia and Chile) for over a century, the problem has been intensified throughout the years due to the greater depths that mineral extraction reaches, where the stress levels and environmental conditions increase the possibility of a rockburst occurrence. Seismic events inside the mine cause important losses of human lives and infrastructure damage. To deal with this problem it is necessary to implement several kinds of safety protocols. For example, seismic indicators allow to identify, through the analysis of a set of seismic parameters -magnitude, energy, time, decay rate, among others-, periods of time when a seismic event of considerable magnitude is most likely to occur. The objective of this work is to use the frictional energy generated by a microearthquake inside the mine as a seismic indicator, linking it with the occurrence of large magnitude seismic events which are outer the background activity. Thus, we seek to determine the set of seismic parameters which allow the best performance of the frictional energy/heat indicator. In the present study, we considered magnitude, frictional energy, and time as seismic parameters to study the efficiency of the proposed indicator. The optimal set of parameters was determined using two different methodologies: accumulated thermal energy and alert bands. The Piece Skill Score and the Accuracy indexes were used to evaluate each set of parameters. Both approaches show a high rate of true positive and true negative hits. Furthermore, it was concluded that both methods show complementary results in terms of the detection of critical events (Mw > 3.0).

The new 9300 TPD sinter plant being built for China Steel Corporation is incorporating the latest computer technology for plant control systems. The control system will use a central computer and distributed micro-processors to control instrument loops and switching logic in the blending yard and sintering plant. All plant functions, including combustion and fan controls, will be controlled by remote microprocessors located throughout the plant, and connected by a communications link to the centrally located computer and control room. The design, programming, construction and operation of a microprocessor based control system presents new challenges to the control engineer. With microprocessors in the control system, more power exists in the individual control loop and many supervisory functions may be added at the loop level. The specification of the microprocessor system and the resolution of hardware design and control system design can lead to development of powerful systems capable of higher level control and optimization functions

This summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2009 draws upon information from industry sources, published literature and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. The summary provides data on industry exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents analyses of exploration activities by the mineral industry based upon these data. Two types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration for the year 2009: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. nominal dollars provided by Metals Economics Group (MEG) of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and 2) information on regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2009 and were compiled by the USGS. The MEG information summarizes planned company budgets for worldwide exploration activities in 2009, primarily for base metals (copper, lead, nickel and zinc), diamond and precious metals (gold, platinum-group metals and silver). Information on uranium exploration was included in the MEG overview for the first time in 2007, although this information was not included in the USGS analysis prior to 2008. The MEG survey methodology was changed in 1999 to include companies with exploration budgets greater than $100,000, as well as those companies included in prior studies whose anticipated budgets were above $2.9 million. MEG estimates that its post-1999 surveys cover at least 90 percent of world nonferrous nonfuel mineral exploration budgets. The 2009 survey is reported by MEG to cover an estimated 95 percent. Companies who chose not to participate in the MEG study, private companies that do not publish data and government-funded exploration activities make up the majority of the remaining 5 percent. MEG included 86 more companies in its 2009 survey than it did in 2008.

One of the most difficult items to justify economically on any budget is a training program. The costs can easily be identified--primarily the cost of the program and the inconvenience and cost of filling in for the men taking the training by working other personnel extra hours at overtime rates. Operating efficiency, higher productivity, increased plant availability, development of confidence, improvement in morale and less absenteeism are only a few of the benefits which far exceed the costs. A good preparation plant training program can accomplish more in 5 weeks than can be accomplished in five years of on-the-lob operation. During recent years, coal preparation plants have become more sophisticated and complex as the specification for coal used by electric utilities in their power plants have required improvements in coal quality to adhere to air quality regulations and to improve boiler performance and reliability.

The control of respirable dust in mines has been given paramount importance due to the health and safety implications associated with fine dust. The understanding of the temporal and spatial behavior of dust has been recognized as essential for increasing the efficiencies of the existing control techniques and for developing new control strategies. Mining-related studies in this area are, in general, limited. They are also mostly experimental. Some mathematical and computer analyses have been attempted. In this paper, first a review of the mathematical studies performed in the last three decades in this area is presented. Second, a mathematical model for analyzing dust flow in mines is proposed. The model takes into account a number of factors affecting dust transport. It incorporates varying dust generation source strengths and dispersion, deposition, and coagulation of dust in mine airways. Finally, application areas for the model are discussed. A computer program based on the mathematical model has been developed. The program will output the dust concentration in the mine atmosphere as a function of time and distance from the source. The amount of dust deposited on the sides, roof, and floor of the airway is also determined.

"Hydrogen (H2) gas released during battery charging can result in cross-interference for carbon monoxide (CO) sensors used for early fire detection and compromise the integrity of the mine atmospheric monitoring system (AMS). In this study, a series of laboratory-scale and full-scale experiments were conducted to evaluate the responses of different CO sensors to H2 gas. In the laboratory-scale experiments, constant H2 concentrations in the airflow, from 100 to 500 ppm, pass through sensors. While in the full-scale experiments, increasing H2 concentrations generated as a byproduct from charging the batteries at the battery charging station rise to the sensors under different ventilation scenarios. The H2 concentrations at the CO sensor location were measured using H2 sensors and were correlated with the CO sensor response. The effects of ventilation and sensor location on the CO sensors responses were also analyzed. The results of this study can help mining companies to select appropriate CO sensors and improve the deployment of these sensors to ensure the safeguard of underground miners. INTRODUCTION As many types of battery-powered mining equipment such as scoops and shield haulers are used in underground mining operations, charging stations are required to charge the equipment batteries. These batteries are of lead acid chemistry. A safety issue exists with the battery charging stations as all lead acid batteries produce flammable H2 gas during the normal charging process. Overcharging or excessive heat can quickly cause batteries to produce even more H2. If H2 is not appropriately diluted or dispersed, it builds up, and the risk of fire and explosion increases. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulation (30 CFR Part 75.340) requires that battery charging stations should be housed in noncombustible structures or be equipped with a fire suppression system. When a fire suppression system is used, the battery charging stations must be ventilated with intake air that is directed into a return air course or ventilated with intake air that is monitored for CO or smoke using an AMS. The monitoring of intake air ventilating battery charging stations should be done with sensors that are not affected by H2."
