It has been estimated that about 45 tonnes of mercury are emitted annually in the USA in the atmosphere as a result of burning coal in power-generating plants. A similar situation had existed in the metallurgical industry particularly in zinc production plants but this problem has been solved long ago by introducing scrubbing systems. Methods of mercury removal and recovery are discussed.

"Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is an occupational health hazard in underground mines. It generally occurs in the submicron range, and is often present in the mine atmosphere with significant concentrations of dust particles that tend to occur in the supramicron range. Since dust can interfere with analytical methods to measure DPM, it is often removed from a sample stream using impactor-type size selector (diesel particulate matter impactor, DPMI). Because the DPMI physically removes oversized particles from the stream, its performance may be gradually reduced with aging. Sharp-cut cyclones (SCCs) represent an alternative size selector for DPM sampling applications, with a major advantage being that, by design, they should not be susceptible to rapid aging. This paper presents results of a field study designed to compare the performance of aged versus new/clean DPMIs and SCCs in an underground mine. DPMI aging resulted in clogging of the device, and eventually a reduction of its effective particle cut size – though, when sample flow rate was maintained, DPM sample mass collection was not affected until significant aging had occurred. Under the conditions present for this study, effects of SCC aging were observed to be minimal by the end of the study period. INTRODUCTION Submicron particles are increasingly recognized as significant respiratory health hazards (Cantrell and Watts, 1997; Kenny, et al., 2000; Ristovski, et al., 2012). Diesel particulate matter (DPM) represents a major source of submicron particles in both public and occupational environments (Kittleson, 1998; Abdul-Khalek et al., 1998). Due to their work around large equipment in confined spaces, underground miners have some of the highest exposures to DPM (EPA, 2002; Grau et al., 2004). DPM largely consists of solid elemental carbon (EC), commonly known as “soot”, and organic carbon (OC) that may be sorbed to EC particles (Kittleson, 1998; Abdul-Khalek et al., 1998). EC and OC can be measured by thermal-optical methods such as the NIOSH 5040 Standard Method (Birch, 2016), and their sum is referred to as total carbon (TC). While the complex nature of DPM does not allow for its direct measurement, both TC and EC have been accepted as suitable surrogates for monitoring occupational exposures to DPM (Noll et al., 2007 and Birch, 2016)."

Introduction Ventilation engineers have always felt somewhat uneasy when, in the normal course of their work, they are forced to consider the flow in any mine entry as "wholly rough." Under such conditions in pipes, friction factor is no longer a function of Reynolds' number. This assumption serves to simplify the problem and overcome an evident lack of information concerning the variability of K-factors. During the summer of 1985, a unique opportunity to investigate the reaction of friction factor to changing flow rates presented itself. A Utah coal mine was temporarily directing a substantial airflow through a single entry. By regulating the quantity, it would be possible to obtain a wide range of Reynolds' numbers in an entry composed of two distinct coal thicknesses. This paper describes the conducted study. The theory covering basic fluid flows in pipes that led to the questioning of constant K-factor is presented first. Experimental procedures are then described, including the use of a view camera in determining entry area and perimeter. Finally, a discussion of the observed variations in friction factor versus Reynolds' number is given. Changes of 34% and 45% in K-factor were seen in this study for the two entry heights. The implications of ignoring the relationship in this case and a call for an expanded research effort are also presented. Theory Since a gas is a fluid, the general principles of fluid mechanics are equally applicable to airflow in a mine entry as they are to the flow of water in a pipe. The Darcy equation is, therefore, equally applicable to pressure drop calculations in both situations. This famous formula was originally derived for use in circular cross sections and may be modified for any other shape by the use of hydraulic radius (defined as the area divided by the "wetted" perimeter). The Darcy equation relates the physical parameters of the pipe (diameter, length, and resistance to flow) and fluid velocity to the energy needed to create the flow. A study by Nikuradse (1933) brought to light the suspected dependency of the friction factor term in the Darcy equation upon Reynolds' number. By performing a large number of laboratory experiments, he established some basic concepts upon which other researchers built. Chief among these contributors was Colebrook (1939). Using commercial-grade pipe, he established an empirical relationship between Darcy's friction factor and Reynolds' number that is still in use today. If Colebrook's system of equations is plotted on log-log paper (as was done by Moody, 1944), the curves have some very distinct features. Of importance to the subject at hand is the relative response of friction factor to Reynolds' number at a given relative roughness. Simply stated, a pipe can appear to be either smooth or rough, depending on the flow conditions. As the Reynolds' number increases, the friction factor decreases at a decreasing rate until it becomes nearly a constant value. At this point, the flow is said to be "wholly rough." It is upon this condition that many traditional ventilation solution methods depend. For calculating pressure drops in a mine entry, Atkinson's equation is much more popular than the Darcy equation. Both of these formulas describe the same phenomenon and so have similar forms and functions. The K-factor in the Atkinson equation is equivalent to the Darcy friction factor and can be related by simply changing units, equating the pressure drops, and canceling like terms. A generalized form of this relationship is presented below as equation 1. K = yf/28,800g = [q]f/28,800 (1) where K is Atkinson's friction factor in kg/m3 (lb - min2/ft4), Y is the specific volume in Nt/m3 (lb per cu ft), p is the fluid density in kg/m3 (slugs per cu ft), g is the acceleration due to gravity (9.8 m/s2 or 32.2 fpsz), and f is Darcy's friction factor, which is unitless. The objective behind Eq. 1 is to show the strong correlation between K and f. Since these two quantities differ only by a constant (q]/28,000), the assumed independence of K-factor and Reynolds' number is suspect in light of the known response of f. Unfortunately, the formulation does not provide information concerning the actual relationship, as entry geometry likely plays a major role in the response curve. Only an indirect indication that such a relationship might exist is provided. Previous work on this subject was performed by Thomas Falkie (1958). The study involved a laboratory model composed of sections of straight, steel duct and a range of Reynolds' numbers from 15,610 to 137,200. Results from this work show a variation in friction factor with Reynolds' number in much the same way as it was found to vary in pipes. Over the range of velocities examined, a decrease of approximately 38% in K-factor was observed. This previous experience provides additional incentives to investigate the phenomenon under field conditions. Past model studies done at the University of Utah by Ozukurt (1945), Biron (1944), and Greenhalgh (1942) present similar evidence of this variability. Good afternoon gentlemen. To begin, may I say ?thank you? to the AIME for the invitation to be here today to talk about my company's experience with shovel, truck, pocket, to car loading. The other author of this paper is here today. (Introduce John Sweet). Before we get to the details of this paper I want to tell you a little about Erie Mining Company. Erie Mining Company is located on the east end of the Mesabi Range in northern Minnesota and is engaged in the business of processing taconite rock into iron ore pellets. In 1970, the twelfth year of production, Erie will produce its rated capacity of 10.3 million tons of high grade iron ore pellets. The plant is the first of five iron ore pelletizing operations managed by Pickands Mather & Co. with a combined annual production capacity of 21 million tons. This plant began producing high grade iron ore pellets in 1957 placing it among the earliest of taconite production facilities in North America. Historically Pickands Mather & Co. had been a leading natural ore mine managing firm in the Great Lakes region for more than 70 years. Pickands Mather & Co. moved into the new field of taconite mining and processing with management and operational experience from the open pits and underground mines. We were to learn much of volume taconite handling requiring new equipment and new procedures. A trial and error period through the early years of taconite processing developed through the operation of an experimental sized preliminary plant near the present Erie Mining Company site.

The use of pulverized coal for generating power and performing industrial processes has made an important contribution to our industrial economy during the past half century. Actually, the burning of coal in powdered form is a subject that has held the attention of engineers for a century or longer. Its widespread use, however, is comparatively recent, As early as 1866 patents were granted to Messrs. Whelpley and Storer for a method of feeding pulverized coal into a furnace as an auxiliary to the grate fuel. In the many tests made during the subsequent years with various kinds of apparatus, the experimenters were handicapped in not getting the coal fine enough to obtain complete combustion and to prevent excessive formation of slag.

The Surface Mining Control & Reclamation Act is a complex piece of legislation signed into law on August 3, 1977. It is the culmination of more than six years of debate by the Congress over the need for a national regulation of surface mining as opposed to the prior concept of regulation by each concerned state. It departs from the more normal type of law in that it includes very specific requirements, limitations and performance standards. In its procedural aspects, it is somewhat similar to the Clean Air Act and the Water Pollution Control Act in that it places primary responsibility at the state level, provided the state meets minimum national requirements. At the time of writing this paper, in late December 1978, the Interim Regulatory Program has been in effect for seven months. The proposed regulations for the Permanent Program, the draft Environmental Impact Statement, and the draft Regulatory (Economic) Analysis ware available for eight weeks before the close of the comment period on November 27. We are now awaiting issuance of the final versions of these documents. The states in which coal is mined, for the most part, have made sere revision to their state laws and are in the process of revising their regulations, or have just completed the revision, to comply with the Initial Regulatory Procedures. They are now faced with another new major effort to analyze and plan for compliance with the Permanent Regulatory Program, which is expected to be promulgated by the Office of Surface Mining of the Department of Interior by the time this paper is presented.

Historically, geologic data has not been adequately considered in resource estimation. More recently, with the use of computers and sophisticated estimation algorithms and geostatistical justifications, geology has been downplayed further. Many reasons are given for not using geology including cost, time and irrelevance. None are valid. Boundaries defining mineral domains should be used in computer-generated resource estimates. Selected case histories show how the failure to honor geology has caused discrepancies in resource estimates of actual in-place resources. After-the-fact differences have included decreases in tonnage of up to 50% and increases up to 300%; partial to complete recategorization of material; and 50% decreases in grade. The costs of gathering and using geology are trivial compared to the potential consequences.

In the summer of 1990, a study was conducted to document large tractor (i.e., Caterpillar Dl1N) utilization in surface coal mining. The tractors were found to be utilized as primary production machines and in combination systems with blast casting and draglines and blast casting and excavator/truck systems. In addition, dozers were used to prebench ahead of a primary dragline system. The study also established ranges and averages for Dl1N operating costs and mechanical availability. Based on simulated production of various tractor dozing applications, the potential for low cost coal stripping was suggested (Hrebar, 1991). A follow-up study, also funded by Caterpillar Inc., was conducted in the summer of 1991 to determine actual production rates in two dozer stripping applications. These actual production rates would then serve as a foundation for estimates of stripping costs. This paper presents the results of the studies in a contour and a cast application.

Most bituminous coal mined near Eastern industrial areas requiring high Btu pipeline gas is caking and therefore unsuitable for fixed-bed pressure gasification by present techniques. If the caking property of such coal can be destroyed the resulting fuel can be gasified in a fixed bed at pressure with steam and oxygen as a preliminary step in making a high-Btu gas. To find a practical way to convert strongly caking coals of granular or small lump size to noncaking fuel was the object of this study. In previous work strongly caking coals of 1/8- to 1-1/2-inch size was converted to a noncaking coal char by treatment in a static bed in about 3 hours [1/]and coal of 18-100 Tyler mesh in a fluidized bed in about 5 minutes.[2/] An inert gas such as `steam, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, or a mixture of all three with a small amount of oxygen was used in both studies. In our work a strongly caking bituminous coal from the Pittsburgh seam of 4-8 Tyler mesh size was converted to a-noncaking form in free-fall in about 2 seconds by dropping it through a countercurrent flow of steam containing 4 to 7 percent oxygen at 1,150°-1,200° F and 300 psig. This method should also be applicable to smaller-sized material.

"Confidence in the design and stability of an undercut cemented rockfill (CRF) span requires a thorough understanding of its emplaced material properties. The unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of cast 6×12-inch QA/QC cylinders is typically used as an index test to track the performance of a backfill plant. However, these strengths need to be adjusted for oversize aggregate removal and sample size effects if used to estimate the emplaced UCS. UCS testing of 6×12, 12×24, and 18×36-inch cast CRF cylinders was used to quantify the relationship between readily available 6×12-inch QA/QC strength data and the emplaced UCS. Test results indicate that the UCS of 18×36-inch cylinders is roughly 40% of the 6×12-inch UCS for similarly compacted samples. Mine QA/QC data indicate that the UCS of CRF is highly dependent on the degree of compaction as measured by bulk density. Based on these results, knowledge of the emplaced CRF density compared to 6×12-inch QA/QC density is also necessary to estimate the emplaced UCS. The scale effect reported in this study is more pronounced, compared to current understanding of backfill properties discussed in the literature, and underscores the need for further site-specific testing. INTRODUCTION The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Spokane Mining Research Division (SRMD), in cooperation with Barrick Gold Corporation, is conducting research with the goal of determining a relationship between 6-inch QA/QC cylinder strengths and the in-place strength of cemented rockfill (CRF). CRF cylinders with dimensions (diameter × length) of 6×12, 12×24, and 18×36 inches were cast onsite at the Turquoise Ridge Joint Venture (TRJV) and Cortez Hills Underground (CHUG) mines using CRF mixed at the mines’ respective batch plants. UCS tests were performed after 28 days of curing to estimate the size correction factor for each mine’s CRF. This paper presents an overview of the mix designs, sample collections, testing methods, test results, and an estimate of the UCS size correction factor for CRF at these mines. BACKGROUND Underhand cut and fill mining methods utilizing cemented backfill are common in underground metal mines in the United States. These methods are advantageous for controlling weak or highly stressed rock mass conditions by creating an engineered material that can be placed in openings, forming a beam that provides a safe, stable back for the next undercut. Increased use of underhand methods in the last 30 years has greatly improved safety in many cut-and-fill mines. However, with the continual push for more efficient and cost effective mining, there is a need to thoroughly understand the geotechnical properties of cemented backfill to assist in designing safe, stable openings while optimizing costs and production schedules."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) investigated the use of seismic refraction tomography (SRT) for identifying changes in pillar loading at the Foidel Creek coal mine near Steamboat Springs, CO. The inherent three-dimensional problem of directly imaging coal pillar conditions is reduced to a single plane by considering only the load transmitted from the pillar to the adjacent floor rock. Floor strata velocity tomograms (at two pillar locations) illustrate that loading conditions are non-uniform and non-unique. Also, time sequence monitoring, as the longwall face advanced, demonstrated that SRT can be used to image spatial changes in loading conditions. SRT offers the mining engineer a simple and flexible technique for evaluating pillar conditions, and thus, both present and alternative mine designs.

Although the number of operating longwalls (approximately 100) has remained relatively constant over the last five years, longwall production levels have significantly increased and have in some cases more than doubled. As a result of the increase in production, control of respirable dust continues to be a problem. Therefore, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Pittsburgh Health Technology Center, Dust Division, initiated a study to investigate the availability and adequacy of technology for controlling dust on longwall mining operations. The study involved 23 longwall mining operations in three different Coal Mine Safety and Health Districts. Each operation was visited for a full shift. Respirable dust samples were collected on face personnel and at fixed locations along the face. Parameters in place to control dust were noted with special emphasis being placed on obtaining quantitative data relative to ventilation, headgate dust controls, cutting drum sprays, external machine sprays and cutting sequence. Attempts were made to correlate dust control parameters in place at the time of the visit to dust concentrations measured at the tail, on the tail shearer operator and to the average concentration of dust determined from averaging all the measurements from the occupations sampled. The parameters in place to control dust were also compared to the gamut of technology known to be available to control dust. This paper presents a discussion on the effectiveness of the parameters in place to control dust and on the availability of technology for the control of dust on longwall mining operations.

A novel methodology to estimate gold recovery by gravity is presented. The methodology makes use of a population balance model which represents gold liberation, breakage and classification behaviour and applies pre-concentration and recovery performance curves to gravity-recoverable gold to predict overall recovery. Derivation of the necessary parameters is explained and demonstrated using data from an actual gravity circuit and one projected application. The methodology makes it possible to estimate the performance of circuits with large gold circulating loads and relatively low unit recoveries (e.g. jigs), or with high recoveries on a bleed of the circulating load (e.g. Knelson concentrators).

An improved experimental procedure to measure contact angle has been consolidated with coal surface preparation involving polishing with abrasive paper, alumina powder, and a cloth, followed by ultrasonic and mechanical cleaning. Specifically, the captive-bubble measuring technique has been compared with the sessile-drop technique and the former has been recommended for the examination of the hydrophobic properties of coal surfaces. Results of the research program, which is currently under way, on the examination of the effect of the nature, amount, size and distribution of mineral inclusions in coal on its wettability are briefly reviewed.

Microscale information about single particle fracture can be incorporated into the macroscale model of the whole size reduction process in the mill. The ultrafast load cell (UFLC) device provides a substantial amount of information about fracture characteristics of a particle under impact loading. UFLC captures high-resolution compressive force signals during particle breakage. The measurement of the compressive force at the instant of fracture of the particle allows computation of a number of comminution-related particle properties, as well as the energy absorbed during fracture. In the current study, limestone particles 50 mm in size were fractured to obtain specific fracture energies. Then, based on the experimental data, two models were proposed to quantify the fracture process. The specific fracture energy distribution of the particles in the range of 6 to 50 mm was defined by the well-known Weibull distribution. The other model is a probabilistic fracture model. This model is a link between energy events occurring in a grinding mill and the breakage rates of particles. The impact energy spectra or energy events occurring in a grinding mill can be obtained with a discrete element method (DEM) simulation. One can model the breakage rates of the mill material by combining the energy spectra with the probabilistic fracture model. This novel approach for the modeling of breakage rates via DEM and UFLC is shown here.

The movement of solid particles in a liquid represents an area of interest in many fields of science and technology. Knowledge of the behavior and characteristics of solid-liquid suspensions is of great importance to many areas of mineral processing. In order to characterize a solid-liquid system, the following factors must usually be considered: a) density of the liquid b) rheological properties of the liquid c) density of the solid particle d) size and shape of the solid particle e) volume fraction of solid particles f) relative motion of solid particles and liquid phase Other variables such as the effect of the containing vessel walls, Brownian movement, inter-particle friction, fluid slip and electrostatic effects, are important in special circumstances. Thus it is evident that a complete theoretical treatment is not possible covering all situations. Studies of the kinematic behavior of solid particles in a liquid have been approached by two methods: 1) Assessing the movement of a single particle and extrapolating to a multi-particle system; 2) Modifying the continuum mechanics of single-phase liquids in such a way as to account for the presence of solid particles. The first approach in general utilizes the method of particle mechanics. Extension to a multi-particle system gives rise to very complicated mathematical computation. The creeping motion equations do, however, furnish a practical, useful basis for achieving a uniform treatment and a better understanding of the phenomena. This approach is useful in the study of sedimentation and hindered settling processes.

The Atlanta Plane Train Tunnel West Extension is being constructed at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport using the Sequential Excavation Method (SEM). The tunnel has shallow ground cover and mixed-face conditions and passes underneath the SkyTrain and MARTA stations and airport terminal buildings. It includes a twin tube Bifurcation with a span of over 45 feet and ground cover of 12 feet. A flat roof is being constructed at the Bifurcation to maximize rock cover and minimize surface settlements. This paper focuses on design and construction challenges for the Bifurcation and tunneling beneath the world’s busiest airport, while minimizing impacts to operations.
