Most fatalities in tunnel fires are caused by the spread of toxic smoke. Controlling the spread of smoke is crucial to provide a survivable environment for emergency egress. A properly designed and tuned feedback control loop is required to achieve a target flow that is slow enough to allow pedestrians to escape under different boundary conditions. Feedback control loops are also helpful in optimizing energy consumption under moving traffic conditions. A reliable feedback flow control system requires sophisticated engineering knowhow and experience, careful selection of instruments and controlled variables, and thoughtful implementation from design through field testing and commissioning.

The mill project at Lone Tree was commissioned in October, 1993, followed by the commissioning of the autoclave pressure oxidation circuit in February, 1994. Discussion of the first year of milling operations at Lone Tree is presented. The mill is currently operating above the design rate of 2,267 mt/d (2,500 st/d). Both phases of the start-up were essentially trouble free. The few problems that were encountered and the respective solutions are addressed.

Generally speaking, it is safe to address this conference as a conclave of Engineers, Owners' Agents, Governmental Representatives, and Contractors. As a group, we have assembled here to learn of our compatriots engaged in similiar underground operations throughout the United States and the World. We are here to learn of improved methods, higher technology, and better management. Through the acquisition of this knowledge, we each hope we can improve our own particular services, products and projects. This session is dedicated to a discussion of "Costs". The most apparent reason for a discussion of costs at this level is to expose subjects affecting costs and propose methods to reduce them. From that premise a contractor can identify three areas of discussion: design considerations, contract considerations, and governmental considerations. A fourth area of consideration is an introspective view of the contractor's role in the design construct process. Unnecessary costs and risks attributable to these areas are contributing excessively to ever increasing project and system costs. DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS On April 20, 1977 the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago accepted proposals for the Tunnel and Reservoir Plan on Contract A and Contract B. This letting called for construction of over 33 km (21 miles) of the Mainstream Tunnel bored at 9.75 m (32 ft) to 10.67 m (35 ft.) in diameter. Global public mineral reporting codes have driven strong governance of public disclosures of minerals information. Recently, we have seen an increase in disclosure of information related to Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) issues, and governance of ESG information in mining companies has arguably reached a similar level of governance and diligence afforded mineral reporting. We define Resource Governance as the conjunction of environmental, social and minerals governance. A modern systems approach to Resource Governance, which combines mineral and ESG information, would provide not only reporting and governance capability, but also has the potential to sense/respond, predict, and manage ESG risks.

A number autonomous operations is in place in several, mainly in fenced areas, where safety is assured by locking off the entire area for other traffic. However autonomy can be brought much further if functional safety is assured and a real mixed traffic of autonomous and manually operated vehicles is possible. MobileTronics has created a modular software and control framework for autonomous machines. The paper covers application examples in which the deterministic object recognition in combination with probabilistic algorithms and sensors is used as a basis for functional safe certification of mixed traffic autonomy.

Many of us are privileged in that we have witnessed the transition from mining methods used in the first quarter of the twentieth' century to those practiced today. In the late Twenties, for example, many mines still used hand mucking methods. In the middle Thirties, more than one large metallurgical limestone quarry still used the 4 cubic yard railway steam shovel formerly in use at the Panama Canal. Mules could occasionally still be found underground, where they provided the-main-source of motive power. Within the last decade, and even within the past five years or less, great improvements have been made in blast-hole drilling, ore loading, and ore hauling equipment. Industrial demand for minerals can be expressed in exponential terms as compared to that at the turn of the century. Even marine mineral resources are receiving accelerated attention. One overall result is that larger and lower grade orebodies can be exploited at a profit. This profit must be made despite, for example, a static monetary price for gold, and despite the continual cost escalation involving labor, materials, supplies, and equipment. Accordingly, the application of the necessary degree of knowledge and judgment required to meet production, cost, and profit goals is paramount.

A promising and increasingly popular tailings management strategy is to place cemented tailings underground as backfill. The placement of cemented tailings results in enhanced geotechnical stability and a purportedly more geochemically stable tailings form with lower leaching potential. Conventional subaerial tailings management can negatively affect water quality if weathering causes acid rock drainage and metal leaching (ARD/ML) to occur, whereas cemented tailings can limit leaching via porosity and permeability reductions and contribute alkalinity to limit the potential for ARD/ML. Cemented tailings backfill appears to be better, but how can this advantage be proven? Currently, cemented tailings backfill is utilized at mining operations internationally, but there is limited guidance on performing geochemical characterization and associated evaluation of the potential impacts to water quality. As a result, various approaches to simulating the leaching behavior of cemented backfill have been utilized, including some methods that are unlikely to represent weathering under site-relevant conditions. American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Standard Test Method C1308-08 is a diffusion testing method initially developed to assess constituent release rates from solid nuclear waste forms. ASTM C1308-08 uses intact cylinders that more closely represent actual backfill than methods that require crushing or size reduction. It is widely believed that leaching from actual cemented tailings is controlled by diffusion through small pores that exhibit limited exposed surface area, making diffusion testing particularly applicable to cemented tailings placement.

One year ago this month, we in Central Florida witnessed the beginning of a most exciting and glamorous attraction. After three years of construction and anticipation, Walt Disney World opened its gates near Orlando and during its first year of operation received a flood of over 10 million visitors---half of all who came to Florida last year! The side effects of this newest addition to Florida have been phenomenal. Traffic on heavy days has been backed up for 30 miles from the amusement park along a major interstate highway. Hotels and motels have been jammed packed for months, and reservations are still difficult to make. Gasoline stations, restaurants and souvenir shops are doing a booming business. Everywhere you look as you ride the highways of Central Florida you see the signs of growth. New hotels spring up almost overnight. Golf courses galore. New housing projects and apartments sprawl where orange groves used to be. New roads criss-cross areas which were once deserted. There seems to be no end to the steady influx of tourists and new residents to the Sunshine State. And it's mainly because that we are the Sunshine State that they come. Air and water pollution is and has been at a minimum in Florida. Pollution and emissions are fighting words among some groups dedicated to preserving the bountiful environment we share in Florida. Miami Copper Company has used conveyor belts underground since 1947, At that time, the draw level for a portion of the orebody was only 25 feet above the haulage level To get the main haulage drifts as far away as practical from under the stoping area, 301, belt conveyors were used for lateral transfer, If the haulage drift was kept in good ground., a satisfactory draw of these stopes could be effected in that repairs to the conveyor drifts could be accomplished while drawing ore from the stopes. Some 7,400,000 tons of ore were mined with the 301d belt conveyor at a belt cost of approximately $0,004 per ton of ore. When the mining plan for a new section of the mine was laid. out in 1953, it was decided to use belts to collect the ore from the higher draw levels, and. move the ore laterally to centrally located concrete ore passes for transfer to the main haulage level (See Cut #1), The final plans used belt conveyors too collect from 3 stopes: on the 570 level, 2 stopes on the 720 level, and one stope on the 900 level. The six stopes to be mined in this manner would produce about 8 million tons of ore, and the sequence of mining was such that not more than four 400 feet conveyors would be in use at one time, Four conveyors using 36 inch, 4 ply belting were designed by the mine engineering office and fabricated at the mine shop, so that no piece was longer than 10 feet, and. the heaviest piece was the 25 horsepower motor, The head drive section, and the tail-pulley-takeup section were of bolted construction so they could be broken down for easing moving, Due to the size of the mine openings, the belt had to be transported into the mine in 400 feet rolls, requiring two splices for an installed belt. A torque arm speed reducer was used with a V -belt drive which made it possible to change the speed of the conveyor by changing the diameter of the V-belt pulley (See Cut #2).

His first product, introduced in 1949, was the TK10, a mobile crane that, at the time, was a groundbreaking innovation to the heavy construction industry. From there, the company began its growth into a world-leading heavy equipment manufacturer that always relied on innovation.In October, Liebherr gathered a group of mining and construction magazine editors in Leoben, Austria to take a look at the company’s latest addition to the global mining and construction markets. On the mining side, Liebherr provided a demonstration of its T-236 100-t (110-st) haul truck and the PR- 766 50-st (55-st) crawler tractor. The one-day demonstration took place at the Erzberg iron mine near Leoben, where both machines are being proven.The Erzberg Mine, operated by VA Ersberg, has been in operation for about 1,300 years and is said to be Europe’s largest surface mine. It employs about 230 people and mines about 12 Mt/a (13,200 million stpy) of ore, producing about 3 Mt/a (3.3 million stpy) of fine-grained iron ore.T-236 rigid-frame truckThe new T-236 rigid-frame dump truck, with a diesel electric drive system, is Liebherr’s entry into the 100-t (110-st) class and is the first in this class with a four-corner, oilimmersed braking system. The haul truck was first introduced during the 2016 MinExpo in Las Vegas, NV. The unit has since successfully completed its testing phase and is currently in its first field operation trials at the Erzberg iron mine in Austria."

"No matter what type of ore is being extracted from a mine, mucking with front loaders can be accompanied by wet fines that cling to every surface. Once loaded into a hopper or conveyer transfer chute, viscous material can quickly build up on the walls to create bottlenecks, clogging the chute and causing expensive downtime.Clearing material from hoppers, chutes, bins and vessels can be done using manpower and tools on hand, but safety experts recommend considering a solution that prevents exposing workers to potential hazards. Operators at modern mining sites, such as the Eagle Mine, located in Western Marquette County of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, understand that using specialized equipment reduces worker exposure, offers the safest mode of production and provides the most cost-effective lasting results.“Safety is a top priority for us,” said Ted Lakomowski, lead reliability technician at the Eagle Mine. “When we experienced clogging and downtime at the processing mill, the crew naturally swung into action to resolve it, but we immediately sought a safer long-term solution.”Stope mining for nickel and copperOwned by Lundin Mining, a globally diversified base metals mining company headquartered in Toronto, ON, Canada, the Eagle Mine is the only primary nickel mine in the United States, producing 1.5 percent of the world’s total nickel production. The first operation permitted under Michigan’s Part 632 Non-Ferrous Mineral Mining Law, it opened in 2014 and is expected to produce 163 kt (360 million lbs) of nickel, 134 kt (295 million lbs) of copper and small amounts of other metals over its estimated nine-year lifespan.The company extracts approximately 2 kt/d (2,200 stpd) from the underground nickelcopper mine using a bench-and-fill stoping process. Accessed from the surface by specialized underground trucks, the vehicles carry about 45,400-kg (100,000-lb) loads through a 1.6-km (1- mile) long and 5.4-m (18-ft) diameter ramp shaft descending into the earth at a 13 percent grade. Stoping is a bottom-up method that involves systematically blasting columns of loosened ore that is then mucked by front loaders into trucks and backfilled using cemented and uncemented rockfill."

Coal cleaning can be effected by the bacterium Sulfolobus acidocaldarius, which in oxidizing sulfur and dissolving mineral matter requires carbon dioxide and oxygen; carbon dioxide as a carbon source and oxygen as an electron acceptor. The desulfurization of coal by thermophilic bacteria under elevated partial pressures of carbon dioxide and oxygen was studied at a total pressure of 1 atm. The partial pressure of carbon dioxide was varied over the range 0.00032 to 0.33 atm (0.00032, 0.007, 0.10, 0.33 atm), and the partial pressure of oxygen was varied over the range 0.14 to 0.40 atm (0.14, 0.21, 0.30, 0.40 atm). The maximum rate of coal desulfurization increased by 32%, from 9.0 to 11.9 mg S/1 hr, as air was enriched in carbon dioxide from its atmospheric level of 0.00032 atm to 0.10 atm. Enrichment with carbon dioxide up to 0.10 atm, at constant oxygen partial pressures, increased the desulfurization rate, but enrichment to 0.33 atm caused the rate to decrease. At constant carbon dioxide partial pressures, the desulfurization rate was maximum at oxygen partial pressures of 0.21 and 0.30 atm. At higher (0.40 atm) and lower (0.14 atm) oxygen partial pressures the rate decreaed by 9 to 20%. The desulfurization rate decreased by 58X, from 9.0 to 3.8 mg S/1 hr, when the air pressure was increased from 1 atm to 3 atm. The effects justify an economic analysis during design and operation of a commercial air feed in a process to desulfurize coal by microbial action.

While this conference is dedicated to the examination of "Challenges in Mineral Processing," the broader aspect of the pursuit of this subject is Research and Development in the Mining Industry. When I was asked to speak at this symposium, I hesitated to accept. While my early schooling, training and professional occupation were in the field of this symposium, it was so long ago that I no longer feel competent to contribute anything of interest to you except perhaps for a limited historical perspective, which most of you probably already know. However, it might be worthwhile to explore the more general aspect of research and development from the viewpoint of management, as this is the stance from which I dealt with the subject for the last 30 years or so. While most managements generally have a positive view of research and development, few of the leaders in the mineral industry have actually had the personal experience of doing research for a long enough time to have obtained a full understanding and the feel for its place in the long-term technological innovation that our industry must foster. I graduated from the University of California in Berkeley with a Bachelor of Science degree and a major in metallurgy. It was during the great depression of the thirties, and it was difficult to obtain a practical job in the industry. I got a scholarship at the Montana School of Mines and received a Master of Science degree in ore dressing under Professor A. M. Gaudin, followed by another year with him pursuing research. Anyone who studied under him, or knew him well, would assert that this was a unique experience. Gaudin had a brilliant mind and a profound respect for science and the scientific method. The Bureau of Mines has investigated the fundamentals of the flocculation process. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of various physico-chemical parameters such as shear rate, polymer dosage, and polymer concentration on floc growth and to determine the applicability of a model in predicting polymer flocculation behavior. A rapid in-line particle size analyzer was used to follow the progress of both the floc growth and the breakage as a function of time. A genetic algorithm (GA) was used to determine the unknown parameters in the model and to fit a curve to the experimental data. Results show that the model, using GA as a tool to determine the unknown parameters, reproduces the experimental data with only reasonable accuracy and was relatively insensitive to the parameters. Results of the flocculation study showed that increases in polymer dosage had greater effect on the time required to reach the maximum floc size than on the floc size itself. It was also determined that, given all the aforementioned parameters, the degree of slurry mixing during the flocculation process had the greatest bearing on the floc growth.

Zaldivar is an open pit copper mine operation located in the Atacama Desert, in northern Chile. The plant produces Cu cathodes using 4 solvent extraction trains. The plant was started up May 1995. Since 1996 the plant has been using on-stream analyzers based on X-ray fluorescence and titration for process monitoring and control. Elemental analyzer alone is not able to provide the critical information for plant operation, it has to be complemented by on-stream titrators integrated to one sampling system. The analyzers are located in a prefabricated shelter. The analyzer system project, operation and performance issues are the main topic of this paper.

Although great strides have been made during the past two decades in the reduction of the severity of accidents and injuries in underground coal mining, the number of accidents resulting in disabling injuries and lost time has continued to increase. Looking ahead to the 1990s, the reduction of accidents and incidents typically found in these latter categories should be emphasized in safety training for underground coal mining. Loss control is an approach which shows promise for applications in mine safety training since loss-control strategies focus on the pre-contact stages of an incident rather than on the incident, itself. Applied to safety training, the heightened awareness of personnel to workplace hazards at the pre-contact stages should result in a reduction of accidents and injuries. This paper explains the concept of loss control and shows how it can be applied in the development of the needs assessment for miner training programs. An example, based on research conducted at the continuous-miner worksite, is provided.

The Pittsburgh Safety and Health Technology Center of the Mine Safety and Health Administration has developed the Mine Emergency Responsiveness Development (MERD) program to improve the reaction and response of mine personnel in mine emergency situations. The MERD program simulates problems that may be encountered in underground mine fires, underground mine explosions or surface mine accidents. Since its inception in 1982, the MERD program has been presented to MSHA, Industry, Labor and State Government Personnel. The program is extremely versatile and is easily adapted to suit various training requirements. It gives the participants the opportunity to experience some of the emotions, frustrations and successes of a mine emergency in a controlled environment without having to be involved in one. Past participants have indicated that this training has better prepared them in actual emergency situations through increased awareness and advanced preparation of plans and resources. In 1992, a Mine Simulation Laboratory, which simulates a coal mine and metal/nonmetal mine, was built to improve training for mine emergencies and prevention and fighting of mine fires. This facility has been included in the MERD Program to provide realistic and practical training for mine rescue teams and MERD participants in advanced mine emergency operations. This paper presents an overview of the MERD program.

These data are measured in intervals over time. The aim with measurement of the data in a process is to obtain information about the state of it in order to have it under control. Other goal is to know how the results are affected by the process variables to improve upon product quality, redunding manufacturing cost, better pollution control etc.
