"The Bypass Tunnel has high head conditions ranging from a minimum of 600 feet (183 m) under the Hudson River to a maximum of 875 feet (267 m) on the west side. The ground cover ranges from 425 feet to 900 feet (130 to 274 m). A two-pass lining is designed for the Bypass Tunnel. The bolted, gasketed precast segments carry the temporary hydrostatic and permanent ground loads. After the tunnel is put into service, the design assumes that the final lining, which varies from reinforced concrete to reinforced concrete with steel interliner, will carry the permanent hydrostatic loads. The design head for the segments is assumed at 775 feet (236 m), and the internal operating pressure head is around 1,200 feet (366 m). This paper discusses the design hydrostatic head and different load conditions considered for the segments, the load sharing between the segments and final lining, and the means employed to control water and hydrostatic pressure. PROJECT BACKGROUND The Rondout-West Branch Tunnel (RWBT), a segment of the Delaware Aqueduct, was built from 1937 to 1944 and provides about 50% of New York City’s total water supply. Monitoring and tunnel operations have shown that the RWBT is leaking up to 35 million gallons per day (MGD) (132.5 million L/day). In particular, two locations have been identified as areas of concern: Roseton and Wawarsing, as shown in Figure 1. The Wawarsing reach of the aqueduct will be repaired with an extensive grouting program when the RWBT is unwatered. However, because of the extensive nature of the leakage in the Roseton area, a Bypass Tunnel will be constructed to divert the flow around this area."

Attendees at December?s Arizona SME Section Conference at the Hilton El Conquistador Resort outside of Tucson, AZ were feeling optimistic and ready to get to work after a year of steady growth and recovery in the mining industry. During the two-day event (Dec. 5-6, 2010) and the preceding American Mining Hall of Fame banquet and awards ceremony, the focus was on copper, worldwide population growth and regulatory pressures, with several smart new projects featured alongside updates to traditional large-scale copper development projects. Keynote speaker Timothy Snider, chair of the University of Arizona?s Lowell Institute for Mineral Resources, hit the mood of cautious optimism when he analyzed the global demand for resources, using the case example of copper. Over the next 20 years, he said, the world?s population is expected to grow to 9.2 billion and the average annual per capita copper use is expected to rise from 2.2 to 4.5 kg (5 to 10 lb). The increase in demand will provide tremendous opportunity for mining companies, he said, but cautioned that the opportunities are balanced by negative influences on demand and pressures on supply. While demand for copper is currently growing, Snider noted that there were significant downward pressures on demand as well. These included a western world that is overbuilt, in-creasing use of substitute materials in new construction and the rise of wireless devices. He also noted new regulatory pressures, and pointed out that resource development now had to occur within a context of sustainability on several levels.

A pilot plant was constructed and operated to investigate the column flotation of 20 x 200 mesh North Carolina phosphate ore, using high throughput, high solids operating conditions developed at the NCSU Minerals Research Laboratory. Flotation was performed at 45% solids in a 9.5 cm (3.75 in.) diameter by 2.26 m (7.4 ft.) tall column at throughputs of 19.1 t/hr/m2 (2.0 stph/ft2) and 31.7 t/hr/m2 (3.3 stph/ft2). Recoveries in excess of 98% of the phosphate value were obtained at the lower throughput -- while obtaining concentrate grades containing over 28% P205 (61.2% BPL) at that recovery. Recoveries of about 95% of the phosphate value were obtained at the higher throughput, while making a concentrate averaging 27.6% P209 (60.3% BPL). In addition, a better understanding of the variables governing the column flotation of coarse nonmetallic minerals was gained. Low air flow rates adversely affected concentrate grade at the lower throughput. At the higher throughput, phosphate recovery decreased at an elevated air flow rate. An unexpected result of the study was the effect that frother type had upon phosphate metallurgy. Use of Nottingham Econofroth 925 provided better flotation selectivity than American Cyanamid F-65 at the low throughput. This is significant since the high' throughput tests were conducted with F-65 exclusively. It is reasonable to expect further improvement in high throughput performance when the optimal frother type and dosage are determined.

Requirements of flue gas desulfurization (FGD) for Eastern and Western U.S. coals will not be the same because of differences in coal sulfur content, ash analysis, and beating value. The effects of these differences and of limited availability of water in the West are the subjects of this paper. Eastern and Central bituminous coals are generally high in sulfur and require removal efficiencies in the range of 70 to 90 percent to meet the Federal emission standard of 1.2 lb SO2/MMBtu. Ash in Eastern coals is low in alkali content and is relatively insoluble in scrubber solutions. High sulfur content and market availability make salable product methods more attractive in the fast and Central United States than in the West. Western subbituminous coals and lignites are generally low in sulfur content, however, only a few deposits could reliably meet the Federal emission standard without FGD, Required removal efficiencies generally fall in the range of 0 to 60 percent to meet the 1.2 lb SO2/MMBtu limit. If the standard were raised to 2 lb S02/MMBtu, approximately two-thirds of Western coals could be burned without FGD. Some Western coals contain ash high in alkali, some of which is soluble in scrubber solutions. This complicates scrubber chemistry, but it also provides the meant for displacing some or all of the limestone requirements when only moderate S02 removal is required. Dry areas in the West would benefit from full commercial developement of dry processes of FGD.

Pumped storage power plants are one of the options to store the fluctuating production of electric energy from renewable sources in a sustainable manner and is able to provide Europe with the opportunity to overcome the effects of climate change. However, due to the extensive land use required when planning the water reservoirs, several projects have been declined after social conflicts raised, even in Germany. Nonetheless, after the flooding and drought periods in northern Germany, the catastrophic floods of July 2021 in south west Germany, the country’s need to decrease its dependency on import of gas and energy supply, and the energy transition goals set for 2030 and 2050, it has become clear that the implementation for water reservoirs must increase in the coming years, whether above ground or underground. Furthermore, not only Germany is interested in the use of underground cavities for water and energy storage, other European countries as Sweden are currently developing studies and solutions to bring this concept soon to reality in Europe. This article introduces the systematic approach for planning and designing large underground cavities for water reservoirs as a sustainable energy transition approach and a climate change response by showcasing the process of selection and results of the “Energy and Water Storage Harz” (EWAZ) research project. Additionally, the results of the evaluation of the effect of implementing the selected underground and surface infrastructure into the current water management system in the region is presented. Finally, the different possibilities evaluated for the underground cavities within the project and the technical challenges involved are be discussed.

Measuring the specific gravity of a pulp in concentrating plants is a relative, y simple procedure, but the desired accuracy is often difficult to attain. Many plants use the system of weighing a known volume of the pulp on a scale. In many cases, this method is quite accurate, but obtaining a true sample presents quite a problem. This is especially true when the pulp tends to froth, the solids settle rapidly, or the flow is fast at the point of sampling. There is also the problem of the operator neglecting to take the sample because of duties elsewhere, or, if everything Is apparently running smoothly, he assumes the pulp density is also all right. In 1952, the Pine Creek plant of Union Carbide Nuclear Company began working on a better method for measuring and controlling pulp density. After an extensive investigation of different methods for measuring the specific gravity of moving pulps, the Research Department decided that the bubble tube method appeared to be the simplest and most promising for our applications. It consists of two bubble tubes, of different lengths, submersed in a pulp. Low pressure air is supplied to, the two tubes through sight bubblers to maintain approximately equal volume of air to each bubble tube. The bubble tubes are also connected to a differential manometer, one to each side. Therefore, knowing the vertical distance between the outlets of the bubble tubes, the manometere can be calibrated to measure directly the specific gravity of the pulp. In several previous studies from this laboratory (1-4) the autophobicity concept of Zisman and co-workers (5, 6) has been extended to gas phase adsorption processes. Low molecular weight alcohols adsorb on silica or alumina to yield novel isotherms in that monolayer adsorption occurs at low relative pressures indicative of strong bonding, but subsequently multilayer adsorption is quite sparse and diminishes with molecular weight of the alcohol. Such isotherms fit no standard classification scheme, however, in the vacinity of monolayer coverage alcohol isotherms give an excellent fit to the Langmuir or B. E. T. , Type I model (7). Monolayer adsorption is relatively irreversible and it is thus possible to prepare these chemisorbed layers and perform subsequent adsorption studies thereon. All indications are that the adsorptive properties on such films is radically different from that on the underlying alumina (4, 8) and in one study finite contact angles for hydrocarbon fluids were observed. One perennial conceptual difficulty is that there is no observed upper bound to the adsorption isotherm which would be necessary for autophobic adsorption to occur. The cause for this has been studied, and it is currently believed that adsorption is complicated by reversible capillary condensation at contact points between powder particles. The evidence for this is that large particle powders give less "apparent" adsorption at high relative pressures and in one very tedious study adsorption on planar sheets, oxidized aluminum displayed similar reduced uptake at high relative pressures when compared with high specific surface area powders (3).

"Mineral deposits require substantial amounts of energy to transport and be processed into usable form and, as such, present a real processing challenge in that the deposits are never homogeneous and orebody compositional characteristics are all over the map. Extracting the desired mineral(s) from the deposit at sufficient profit margin, despite severe fluctuations in market price, requires process automation architecture capable of supporting an integrated enterprise solution. Such an architecture will encompasses the activities of individuals, process units, process areas, plant level activities, mine management and business planning, and accounting systems. Key to the automation process is the aspect of value generation. This article brings together the various requirements for the automation of a mining enterprise and presents the different aspects of how to obtain value across the entire mining operation.Minerals’ processing sites are historically long lived, with 20-year life-of-mine not uncommon and 75 years not unheard of. Considering that hardware technology advancements are introduced every six months, or less, it is prudent to select process automation systems that adhere to “open” industrial standards versus proprietary based systems. In the minerals processing industry, the key to survival is driving the cost of production per unit volume to the lowest possible level and provide enough profit to sustain operations. Control system architecture and business information technology are rapidly becoming important tools in the quest for productivity. Getting key dynamic business performance information at the right time to the right person or process unit is crucial to successfully achieving corporate goals. The process automation architecture selected must, therefore, be able to integrate to the various networking enterprises and business systems.The mining industry is generally known as an extractive industry that is physically oriented with respect to operations and the activities in which workers engage. Large numbers of people performing manual tasks in difficult surroundings, produce variable outputs. But times are changing – and so are industry best practices. While the nature of work still consists of activities such as ore extraction, ore movement, ore concentration, refinement and logistics, automation innovations are starting to change the nature of many of the production steps. The industry has transitioned from requiring more physical activities by workers to more information management, automated control and collaboration within the operation. Humans are good at situational intervention and nonlinear reasoning and do best when empowered with an overall production perspective. Machines and automation are good at repetitive functions, steady state operation, and managing transitions. Thus, a combination of advanced technology solutions, reliable and useful information and full human contributions are necessary to mining operations for value generation."

For the past several years, inflation has placed increasing pressure on our economic system. The total effect of inflation is complex when combined with other factors which affect the economics of equipment. A mathematical model is described herein which can be programmed on a computer to determine the effect of inflation on economic life and profits after taxes. The computer output results in graphic plots which clearly show the relation of various percentages of inflation to life and profits. Inflation has become a common topic of conversation in the recent past. What is it and how can it be measured? What effect does increased inflation have on equipment policy? Research now in progress at the Construction Institute at Stanford University is beginning to unravel some of the mystery of inflation. As a start, let us answer the first question by defining the word inflation. The dictionary says that inflation is "an increase in the volume of money and credit relative to available goods resulting in a substantial and continuing rise in the general price level. It appears, in fact, that we are in an inflationary spiral which is "a continuous rise in prices that is sustained by the tendency of wage increases and cost increases to act on each other." 3 Inflation behaves just like compound interest. It takes more dollars of future years to buy an equal amount of a given commodity, be it a material or a service. Let us assume an annual inflation rate of 5 percent. Mining on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) administered lands is affected by Federal laws and regulations requiring the mining industry to plan for the environmental consequences of surface disturbance. Regardless of the requirements for obtaining a claim, permit, lease or contract to mine, a notice or a mining and reclamation plan will be submitted and an acceptable environmental document must be prepared prior to mining. A bond may be required based on the results of the environmental evaluation, public interest and the operator's past history of compliance. In several areas, Federal requirements are different from California's requirements under their Surface Mine and Reclamation Act (SMARA). Therefore, the BLM is negotiating with the State in order to work out problem areas of responsibility and duplication of effort.

Functional mineral pigments are used in large quantities in paint, paper, plastics, rubber, textiles, agriculture, and several other industries. U.S. consumption in 1969 is estimated at over 5 million tons a year, valued at nearly $150 million, as shown in Table 1. Originally extender pigments were employed only to lower cost. They were thought of merely as adulterants to replace more expensive prime pigments and binders. However, over the years their role has become better understood, and today their main functions are: - Increasing strength, stability, and service life. - Improving surface properties. - Enhancing application and processing properties. - Extending prime pigments. - Controlling viscosity and package stability - Lowering overall costs of the finished product. The principal minerals used as functional pigments are kaolin, ground calcium carbonate, talc, and asbestos. Other minerals include barytes, attapulgite, diatomite, mica, ground silica, wollastonite, and nepheline syenite. Several synthetic products, including precipitated calcium carbonate; precipitated, gel, and fumed silica; alumina trihydrate; and barium sulfate, compete with mineral products. They are more expensive, but often have more closely controlled particle size or other properties because they can be tailor-made according to the requirements. This paper covers only natural products selling for $10 or more a ton, approximately the lower limit for pigment grades. Data refer only to consumption in pigment applications. For example, such applications as filter aids for diatomite are not included. Key properties of the major mineral pigments are given in Table 2. It is important to note that these properties are primarily physical rather than chemical. In general, these products are sold to performance specifications for what they can do rather than on chemical composition specifications on what they contain.

I can recall a time 10 or 12 years ago when I spent a pleasant Sunday afternoon driving to Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania to see a carnotite deposit that had recently been discovered. The announcement of the discovery stated that it was in the Pottsville conglomerate in a road cut along the highway. To my surprise, the highway was lined with cars and every weekend prospector for 100 miles had come to see the ?big uranium deposit of the east?. I literally had to stand in line to make a measurement with the scintillation counter I had with me. The thought at first occurred to me that this is evidence of how thoroughly the surface of the United States must have been prospected, more likely, perhaps it points out quite the opposite. A lot of time and energy was being spent in tracing the footsteps of others and a lot of time was spent looking for the obvious occurrences. The point is, that in the early days a tremendous amount of uranium exploration was carried out but few systematic surveys were made. Thorium anomalies were usually discounted after cursory surface field checks. Conversely, in airborne surveys - anomalies due to elevation changes or thin over- burden on hilltops were often investigated more thoroughly than smaller indications on hillsides and valleys. An adequate supply of uranium was nevertheless found due to the ingenuity and persistence of the geological profession and the public in general. This ?adequate? supply, like so many estimates for raw materials turned out to be far too low.

The reverse cationic flotation is the most widely utilized flotation method for concentrating iron ore. In such a process quartz is often floated with ether amines (R?O(CH2)3?NH2) partially neutralized with acetic acid. However, it is well known that the cationic flotation of hematite does not work well if a certain amount of slime is present in ore slurry. To improve flotation performance, starch is often added to the flotation feed to selectively flocculate and depress the iron minerals and sodium silicate is used to disperse the silica gangue. The present study was conducted to improve the flotation efficiency of iron ore flotation by use of a new type of depressant for clay and iron minerals, i.e., GP clay binder. It is postulated that the GP clay binder minimizes slime adsorption on quartz and hematite particles by agglomerating clay particles to reduce their surface area. It is further theorized that the clay binder helps depress hematite flotation due to its unique chelating ability to iron ion. The results from this study clearly show that the GP clay binder is an effective depressant in iron ore flotation. When it was used as a substitute for corn starch, it increased concentrate grade from 60.78% to 67.67% and increased iron recovery from 71.96% to 72.90%. The combined use of GP clay binder with corn starch produced even better flotation performance, increasing concentrate grade to 67.08% and iron recovery to 78.15% simultaneously. "Bleeding", as used in mine ventilation language, has a number of meanings among mining men and is regarded with different degrees of importance. This lack of uniformity stems from a number of specific situations. A method that is adequate in a mildly gaseous mine may fall short in a very gaseous mine. Projected bleeders could be dependable under a certain type of roof, and totally unsatisfactory under a different type. Similarly a plan of bleeders can be rendered useless due to undulations of seam and water in one mine and function well in another. Finally, what is effective in a mining system with partial recovery will not suffice with full recovery. You may wonder, then, if there is a common denominator for the essential function of "bleeding". In my opinion, there is, and it can be defined as controlled movement of air across an active pillar line toward the back and outby ends of the adjacent gob area into the headings provided for the purpose. The objective is to maintain as methane-free as practicable a belt adjacent to the working places, so that, if face ventilation is interrupted temporarily, the gas will not accumulate in dangerous volumes at the working faces before ventilation is restored. It's possible for these temporary interruptions to be unnoticed in time or at all. In such cases, ineffective bleeding could cause a disaster. This has happened. To control, there must be power. That is to say, there must be adequate air, pressure differential between the front and back ends of a pillar line to facilitate proper regulation for diverting of air to the various portions of the gob and as far away from the active section as is practicable. As an indication of the importance of pressure, it is noteworthy that one may provide and maintain in a reasonably open condition a heading or two for a bleeder system and fail to obtain effective bleeding .because air pressure differential is inadequate. On the other hand, you are all familiar with the fact that pillar lines in some seams can be ventilated adequately by air flow straight across the gob when the section is near a main return shaft and thus obtains a heavy pressure differential.

Since the turn of the century the mining industry in the United States has had a number of serious mine explosions, fires and ground fall disasters that have led to a major re-evaluation of mine communication and rescue practices. One of the hindrances of current underground communication technologies is the potential of lost or cut connections when a serious accident, such as an explosion, fire, inundation or major ground fall, takes place. The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act)1 mandated that each underground coal mine in the U.S. must provide for two-way wireless, post-accident communications between underground and surface personnel as well as electronic tracking of underground workers One area that has gained renewed attention in the mining sector is Through-The-Earth (TTE) communication. TTE technology has a major advantage in that transceiver devices can be carried by miners and set up quickly during an emergency, since they require no wire connection to the surface. TTE technology uses ultra-low frequency (1 to 4 kHz) electromagnetic waves, requiring relatively large wire loop antennas and highly sensitive receivers. The signal bandwidth is narrow and the permissible antenna currents in coal mines are restricted, which has led to limited usability of TTE technology in the past, as evidenced in research studies conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in the 1970s. Yenchek (2012)2 pointed out that recent advances in receiver and signal processing technology have enabled voice and text communication capabilities and much improved sensitivity that offers new possibilities for TTE communication in mining applications. One company that has been developing such technology is Vital Alert Communication Inc. Vital Alert has been providing TTE communications since 2003 with a growing focus on emergency response and portable systems. The company?s Canary® Go System is one such product that looks to provide reliable communication capabilities in a portable, user friendly unit that can be utilized both for normal operation and mine rescue scenarios. Researchers at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) have tested the Canary Go TTE communications system in the CSM Edgar Experimental Mine to determine signal propagation distances, signal quality and aspects of practical application.

"Diesel engines are one of the primary contributors to the presence of nano and ultrafine aerosols in ambient air and occupational environments. Exposure to diesel emissions has been shown to contribute to various adverse health outcomes of the pulmonary system and cardiovascular system. Currently diesel emissions in the workplace are monitored by way of collecting the aerosol onto filters, which are then sent to a lab for thermal-optical analysis using the NIOSH 5040 method, which measures elemental and organic carbon explicitly. This process can take days or even weeks, and workers can potentially be exposed to excessive levels of diesel particulate matter (DPM) before the problem is identified. To remedy this, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are seeking to develop a field-portable method for measuring elemental and organic carbon in DPM aerosols. In the current study, we investigated the use of Fourier transform mid-infrared (FT-IR) spectrometry, which lends itself more readily to implementation in a real-time system than do the thermal-optical analysis methods. We have demonstrated a method for measuring organic and elemental carbon in DPM for a broad range of organic carbon (OC) to elemental carbon (EC) ratios (from 50.3 to 0.8). The ability to handle a wide range of OC to EC ratios is critical given the evolving diesel technology. INTRODUCTION Respiratory illnesses are common in mining industry workers [1] and exposures to toxic aerosols such as DPM can result in serious respiratory illness [2]. Health studies show a correlation between workplace exposure to diesel exhaust and an increased risk of lung cancer [3-8]. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has characterized diesel exhaust as a human carcinogen [9], and similar classifications have been made by the World Health Organization and the California Air Resource Board. A recent study [10] suggests that the risk of lung cancer is approximately three times greater for heavily exposed workers. When compared to other aerosols in the mine environment, the settling time of DPM is significantly longer than that of dust due to their small particle size (typically < 1 µm) [11]. Additionally, submicron particles (such as DPM) are deposited in the lungs much more efficiently than their larger counterparts such as dust [12]. Previous studies focusing on particle morphology [13] show that the largest mass contributor to lung disease in mining is elemental carbon, which provides a solid core onto which hydrocarbons are adsorbed. In accord with those findings the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) decided on submicron total carbon as a surrogate for monitoring diesel particulate matter in the mining environment."

The problem of predicting the liberation spectra produced by a closed continuous grinding circuit is of fundamental importance for the design, optimization and control of most operations in an ore dressing plant. The only known approach through which such a calculation can be performed is the population balance model equation. The latest and certainly most significant progress made in this area is the solution proposed by King (1990), which requires one textural parameter that can be measured directly from the ore being studied. The main advantage of King&apos;s solution is that it does not require the estimation of hundreds of arbitrary parameters that cannot be independently measured, as required by the existing conventional solutions. However, King&apos;s solution relies heavily on a knowledge of the detailed internal structure of the Andrews-Milm diagram (Andrews and Mika, 1975). This has never been measured for any ore. The characterization of the internal structure of the Andrews-Mika diagram requires the measurement of the liberation spectra at several progeny sizes produced by the breakage of monosize, monograde particles at several different grades. In this paper, a procedure based on magnetic fluid fractionation for generating seven narrow-size, narrow-grade samples is presented. Each of these samples was then broken into six progeny size classes in an ultrasonic mill. The one-dimensional liberation spectra of each of the 42 progeny and seven parent particle samples were then measured by image analysis. The measured linear-grade distributions are presented in this paper. The calculation of the correspondent volumetric-grade distributions is discussed.

"In this study, cyanidation experiments were carried out on a massive sulfide ore sample, whose grades of the precious metals gold and silver were found to be 4.2 g/t and 311.9 g/t, respectively. Other elements in the ore were arsenic with average grade of 1,751.6 g/t; antimony, 619.7 g/t; zinc, 781.4 g/t; copper, 454.6 g/t; lead, 101.8 g/t; mercury, 324.3 g/t; and bismuth, 0.6 g/t. The first objective of test work focused on determining the best conditions for extracting gold from the ore, ground to less than 75 microns. Different influential parameters such as particle size fraction, cyanide concentration, pH and leaching time were investigated. The optimum parameters were found to be particle size fraction of less than 25 microns, cyanide concentration of 2,000 mg/L, pH of 11 and cyanidation time of 24 hours. In these optimum conditions, the highest gold and silver leaching efficiencies were 76.88 and 59.63 percent, respectively. In addition, roasting as pretreatment at a temperature of 700°C over a period of two hours was evaluated. Cyanidation testing of the roasted ore in the optimum conditions found increases in the gold and silver leaching efficiencies to 85.97 and 67.57 percent, respectively. Moreover, antimony extraction rose to 43.10 percent, from 23.73 percent without roasting.IntroductionGenerally, gold ores can be classified as “free milling” or “refractory,” depending on how they respond to cyanide leaching (La Brooy et al., 1994; Celep et al., 2009). While high gold recoveries (> 90 percent) from free-milling gold ores can be readily achieved, refractory gold ores are often characterized by low gold recoveries (50-80 percent) within a conventional cyanide leaching process (Rubisov et al., 1996; Adams, 2005; Celep et al., 2009). The presence of preg-robber components such as carbonaceous matter, sulfide minerals and aluminosilicate can further decrease gold and silver dissolution rates and recoveries. With the negative effect of the presence of preg-robbers, gold dissolution is considerably diminished in solutions with high cyanide concentration (Tan et al., 2005). In such refractory gold ores, gold particles may sometimes be occluded or included in the sulfide minerals, and pretreatment becomes necessary to break down the mineral structure to liberate gold for subsequent recovery. These ores are usually pretreated with an oxidizing process, after which gold and silver can be recovered by a standard cyanidation process. The main oxidizing processes available for refractory gold ores are roasting (LaBrooy et al., 1994; Angelidis and Kydros, 1995; Li et al., 2009; Karimi et al., 2010; Kyle et al., 2012), biological oxidation (Lawrence and Bruynesteyn, 1983; Komnitsas and Pooley, 1990, 1991; Deng and Liao, 2002; Ciftci and Akcil, 2010, 2013) and pressure oxidation (Mason, 1990; Murthy et al., 1992; Qingcui et al., 2009). In addition, ultra-fine grinding is being used in some plants for the liberation of gold and silver particles that are interlocked in the sulfide or silicate minerals (Celep et al., 2011)"

"Airborne respirable coal dust capture by water sprays or wet scrubbers has been studied and developed over many decades as an engineering control to reduce dust exposure in coal mines and combat coal worker pneumoconiosis. Empirical relationships and deterministic models for particular dust capture experiments have previously been devised to show the key parameters involved in airborne coal dust capture. Many of the results from these models show that the significant parameters related to airborne dust capture are water spray pressure, water quantity, water droplet size, relative water droplet-to-dust particle velocity, and total operating air pressure of the scrubber. However, many airborne dust capture efficiency relationships and models developed for particular experiments cannot be readily applied to forecast the dust collection efficiency of different spray and scrubber design configurations, which rely on several key dimensional engineering measures. This study examines engineering measures from previous water spray and wet scrubber experiments conducted by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) to develop empirical models for wet collection of airborne dusts. A dimensionless empirical model developed for predicting airborne dust capture efficiency of water sprays and wet scrubbers is presented. IntroductionWater sprays have been one of the earliest mainstay engineering controls used to suppress respirable dust in underground coal mines. Some of the earliest reports of water spray usage on continuous mining machines indicated respirable coal mine dust reductions of 20 to 60 percent (Kobrick, 1970). Not long after the enactment of the 1969 Coal Mine Health and Safety Act, the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) and others conducted extensive research into water spray and wet scrubber systems to control respirable dust in coal mines. The primary aspects of water spray dust control included prewetting for dust prevention, localized ventilation redirection and airborne dust capture, which are summarized in handbooks or best-practices guides (Kost, Yingling and Mondics, 1981; Kissell, 2003; Colinet et al., 2010). Initially, underground studies were conducted to identify the primary sources of dust during the mining processes and effective dust controls (Courtney, Jayaraman and Behum, 1978; Jankowski and Organiscak, 1983). Laboratory research systematically studied ventilation and airborne dust capture effects of water sprays and scrubbers to improve their application in underground coal mines (Tomb, Emmerling and Kellner, 1972; Divers and Janosik, 1978, 1980; Grigal et al., 1982; Ruggieri et al., 1983; Jayaraman, Jankowski and Kissell, 1985; Volkwein, Ruggieri et al., 1985; Jayaraman, Schroeder and Kissell, 1986; Divers, Jankowski and Kelly, 1987; Jones and James, 1987)."

Construction materials indeed face a dilemma...as does the building industry as a whole. A stop & go economy; a severe drop; in housing starts; lingering indecision over just what corrective steps are to be taken or to their degree of commitment; no less basic disagreement in regard to which of the, Nation&apos;s problems is really the most pressing -- inflation or recession? Optimism has become a rare quality these days. At moat the cautious view is that this new year will see a long, hard struggle back, with hopes that 1976 at least can truly mark a dual anniversary celebration for the United States and its economic health. Yet the paradox is that once recovery does return, those very construction minerals and materials --which in recent years have experienced the ups and downs of overcapacity, shortage, and now declining demand again-- will once more face the spectre of mass inability to service revived and growing needs for its product. Mounting costs, present marginal expansion investment, and substantial lead times required for new facilities to come into production, could well form a bottleneck to economic upswing. The result again can be another cycle of shortage-induced inflation, and with it continued gyrations within the demand supply relationships of the country&apos;s building industries.
