A significant wollastonite resource has been discovered and evaluated near Seeley's Bay in southeastern Ontario. The deposit occurs in Grenville Frontenac Terrane granulite facies rock within a calc-silicate skarn in contact with Proterozoic-age gabbro. The steeply-dipping and tightly-folded wollastonite skarn beds are interlayered with diopside and quartz-feldspar skarns in a southwest-plunging synclinorium. More than 9 million tonnes of a drill-proven and inferred resource grading 41 % wollastonite has been identified, as well as an additional 3 million tonnes grading 30%. Mineralogical and process test work with the wollastonite from this deposit has demonstrated the potential to produce a high purity, high aspect ratio wollastonite product.

Utilization of belt air in underground coal mines has been discussed extensively during the last decade. The Final Report of the Technical Study Panel on the Utilization of Belt Air and the Composition and Fire Retardant Properties of Belt Materials in Underground Coal Mining formed by the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response (MINER) Act of 2006 recommends research on leakage, use of booster fans, and escapeway safety. This paper discusses the role of ventilation modeling in evaluating primary escapeway pressurization in a three-entry development system to improve emergency escape in a coal mine using belt air. The intake entry of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Bruceton Experimental Mine was pressurized using a 1.1-m (42-in.) diameter, 37 kW (50 hp) fan. The work details air movement in the simulated three-entry system and the resulting leakage patterns. Three mine ventilation software packages were compared to analyze their performance in predicting the airflows and leakage conditions with different fan settings. NIOSH researchers found that the measurement results correlated well with the results of modeling.

Rock mechanics models are “data-limited,” i.e., one seldom knows enough about a rock mass to use computational models unambiguously. Statistical methods, however, are capable of being applied where there are good data but a limited understanding of certain natural phenomena, such as the creep of rock salt or elevated risk domains associated with violent failure of strata commonly referred to as coal bumps and coal bursts. Important to these evaluations are (1) having statistically valid data collected consistently and (2) incorporation of analytical calculations for quantifying geologic, mining and particularly geotechnical variables. By combining the strength of the statistical and analytical models, an improved “hybrid” model is created and utilized. To demonstrate the use of hybrid statistical-analytical techniques in rock mechanics problems, three case studies are used. The first case study involves a historic examination of a nuclear waste repository in rock salt, where mathematical models are built using excavation con- vergence data to identify significant variables and estimate future deformation and stability. This case study uses the convergence rate at up to 121 locations of different ages and geometries using monitoring data over the facilities' footprint excavated through 1998. The second case study focuses on ongoing analysis of coal burst mechanics and associated factors. Within the last three decades, a hybrid statistical-analytical methodology has been applied for identifying significant factors affecting coal bursts. This final hybrid model utilizes data from 30 case studies from Utah, Colorado, Kentucky, and other Eastern U.S. mines providing predictive capability for the entire United States coal fields. The last case study is the assessment of Castlegate Sandstone escarpment stability using historic data collected over 17,000-ft of sandstone escarpment exposure in the vicinity of longwall operations in Utah. Results from all three case studies are used for demonstrating the utility of the method in solving ground control problems.

The 1889 Johnstown Flood, which killed 2,209 people, was a preventable disaster stemming from systemic decisionmaking failures. This paper applies modern Risk-Informed Decision Making (RIDM) frameworks to analyze the historical context and explore alternative outcomes through hypothetical multiverse scenarios. By reconstructing the risk landscape of the South Fork Dam, we demonstrate how structured hazard identification, risk assessment, and stakeholder communication could have mitigated or prevented the catastrophe. Three counterfactual scenarios—proactive maintenance, community engagement, and regulatory oversight—are evaluated to quantify potential lives saved and economic benefits. The study acknowledges historical barriers, including technological limitations, lack of governance, and socioeconomic disparities, which constrained risk-aware decisions in the 19th century. The analysis draws critical parallels to contemporary engineering challenges, particularly in tailings storage facility (TSF) management, where similar risk blind spots persist. The paper concludes that RIDM is not merely a technical tool but a governance imperative, essential for ethical and sustainable engineering practice. By learning from historical near-misses and failures, the modern engineering community can strengthen resilience and accountability. This work contributes to the growing body of retrospective risk analysis, offering a methodological framework for applying RIDM to historical disasters to inform future safety standards.

Mining companies registered with the SEC were required to comply with Regulation S-K 1300 for their annual report covering the first fiscal year ending on or after January 1, 2021. Consequently, most mining registrants filed their first S-K 1300 compliant disclosures in 2022. The US Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC), as part of its disclosure review program, has been issuing comment letters in response to these filings. This paper presents an overview of the trends in these comment letters. The authors reviewed comment letters retrieved from the SEC’s EDGAR database based on Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) Codes that cover mining, the content of the comment letter (whether it references S-K 1300 or not), the names of SEC staff listed in the comment letters, and other criteria. The analysis shows the SEC staff's reviews have been comprehensive covering the breadth of S-K 1300 and eliciting compliance with the rule. The staff through their comments are eliciting all the disclosures required by S-K 1300 and are not allowing registrants to substitute disclosures based on other standards for S-K 1300 disclosures. It is important, however, not to over generalize as the comments are based on the particular context.

The use of ozone as an oxidant for the direct leaching of zinc sulfide (sphalerite) concentrate in sulfuric acid medium under atmospheric pressure was explored. The influence of acid concentration, feed gas injection rate, particle size distribution, stirring speed, temperature and slurry density on zinc extraction efficiency was examined. The experimental results showed that the leaching efficiency depends on all of these operating parameters except for stirring speed. It was found that essentially complete dissolution of zinc from the concentrate with the present method can be achieved in only about seven hours under the conditions of sulfuric acid concentration of 2 mol/L, particle size smaller than 74 µm, slurry density of 50 g/L, stirring speed of 420 rpm and feed gas injection rate of 1 L/min at ambient temperature. The experimental results suggest that the dissolution reactions produce independent elemental sulfur that is readily floated and can be easily separated rather than forming a layer on the surface of the reacted particle, as usually observed in a system with ferric-sulfate as oxidizing agent. It was therefore determined that the dissolved ozone play a key role in improving the rate of zinc dissolution from the concentrate. Analysis of the leaching kinetics indicate that the leaching rate follows the shrinking particle model, and the overall dissolution rate of zinc is controlled by a surface reaction.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION Block caving is a distinct caving method applied mostly to large, massive, ore bodies because of its in¬herent low cost and high production capabilities. Areas of sufficient size are removed by undercutting so that the mass above will cave naturally. Drawing of the caved ore at the bottom of the ore column causes the caving action to continue upward until all of the ore above the undercut level is broken into sizes suitable for handling. When properly applied, block caving results in a lower mining cost per ton than any other under¬ground method. There are three distinct forms: (1) dividing the horizontal area into rectangular or preferably square or nearly square blocks, drawing evenly over the entire area to maintain an approximately horizontal plane of con¬tact between broken ore and caved capping; (2) divid¬ing the horizontal area into panels across the ore body, retreating by undercutting manageable areas from one end of the panel to the other and maintaining an in¬clined plane of contact between the broken ore and caved capping (thus the name panel caving); and (3) no division of horizontal area of the ore body into defi¬nite blocks or panels (this is termed mass caving). Undercutting may be from wall to wall, retreating from one end of the ore body to the other, maintaining an inclined plane of contact between the broken ore and caved capping. The total active caved area is deter¬mined by the size of block that will not produce undue stress on workings below the undercutting level and by total production requirements. This type of operation is also referred to as panel caving at some properties. SUITABLE ORE BODIES Block caving in its various forms is applicable to deposits of various shapes and ores of various strengths. Its success is governed by rigid requirements and limi¬tations. In unsuitable deposits or where improperly em¬ployed, the loss of ore may exceed that of any other mining method. Good planning, systematic work pro¬cedures, careful supervision, and good judgment con¬tribute to its success. Ore Characteristics Included as a necessary characteristic in an ore body suited to a successful block-caving operation is a proper fracture pattern. Ore hardness should be another gov¬erning factor, and the toughness or softness of the ore should be considered. There must be sufficient horizon¬tal area available for expansion of the undercut, if neces¬sary, to start the caving process. Large, massive, ore bodies usually meet these conditions. Veinlike deposits must be wide and dip rather steeply to conform to the block-caving limitations. The capping must be of such a nature as to cave when the underlying ore is being removed since the weight of the overburden aids in crushing the ore. The most favorable capping character¬istic is that it breaks into coarse pieces and resists attrition as the block is drawn. Soft capping, by breaking into fine pieces and sifting into the ore or channeling through the ore to the drawpoints, can seriously dilute the ore and hinder the extraction of clean ore from the blocks. Types of Ore In block caving, a fairly uniform distribution of val¬ues in the ore is necessary. Grade values may range from low grade to high grade, but most often the sys¬tem is applied to low-grade ores. Wide veins, thick beds, or massive deposits of homogeneous ore overlain by ground which will cave constitute suitable ore bodies. The ore must be such that it can be supported while blocks are being developed and undercut but breaks up readily when caved. Some applications include porphyry copper, disseminated molybdenite, hematite in the Lake Superior iron district, limonite deposits in northern Spain, the diamond mines of South Africa, asbestos and nickel in Canada, and massive magnetite in Pennsylvania. Size and Shape Outline of the ore body should be fairly regular, and the sides of the ore body should dip steeply. It may not be economical to mine small portions of ore extending into the walls of the deposit, and low-grade inclusions in the ore cannot be left unmined. Some dilution of the ore, as mining progresses, by low-grade or barren cap¬ping is inevitable and, unavoidably, some clean ore is left between drawpoints. Determining Cavability The use of rock mechanics is sometimes advantageous in helping to determine the cavability of an ore deposit. The US Bureau of Mines has information and testing ability which can assist in determining the cavability of ore types. Several competent consulting orga¬nizations knowledgeable in rock mechanics can also as¬sist in evaluating the cavability of an ore body. Some recent work has been done to better define the cavability index of various ore bodies; an example of how this was determined is discussed by McMahon and Kendrick (1969). The intensity of the fracture pattern is a critical parameter to be analyzed. The question to be answered is, "How intense must the fracture pattern be?" Table 1 is a tabulation of the size of rock fragments that appear at the drawpoint of various block-cave mines around the world. These are indicative of the fracture-pattern spac¬ing and, as can be seen, they vary substantially from the almost sandy material at the Mather mine to fairly sizable blocks at the Grace mine. Several sets of fractures are essential to promote good caving. Ideally, two vertical sets at nearly right angles to each other and a third set nearly horizontal are required to insure a good caving ore body. Large scale surface coal mining will be required to fill future energy demand in the United States. In realization of this long-term commitment to coal resources, the U.S. Energy Re-search and Development Administration sponsored a study to determine the costs and problems of large-scale surface coal mining. As a result of this study a series of computer models were developed that can be used by government and industry to: 1) facilitate mine design and equipment selection, 2) provide detailed analyses of mining and processing costs. Two types of models were developed: detailed simulation models, which provide detailed information on mining systems and equipment to assist in mine design and equipment selection1 and broad models, which provide a first-order evaluation of deposits and new ventures for an entire mining complex. The complete model series permits examination of surface coal mining under a variety of terrain conditions. Six different mining methods were analyzed and documented during the overall project: 1) Area stripping with draglines, 2) Area stripping with draglines, extended bench, 3) Contour stripping with draglines, 4) Area stripping with shovels (loaders) and trucks, 5) Mountain top removal with shovels (loaders) and trucks, 6) Multiple dipping seam mining with shovels (loaders) and trucks. Each major operation in the coal mining pro-cess is represented in these models so that the best methods and equipment may be selected and 50 that the impact of such selection will be reflected in estimates of capital investment, operating costs, and coal price. Individual models allow the user to separately analyze overburden removal, overburden drilling and blasting, coal drilling and blasting, coal loading and hauling, coal preparation and handling, land reclamation, and premining, facilities, and administrative expenses. Because it is impossible to cover all the models in this paper, only the detailed simulation models representative of the technique "area stripping with draglines," are described. The Fort Union Strippable Coal Resource Region, one of eight test cases, is used as an example to describe the models.

Several recent technical reports have described development of digital control systems in concentrator grinding control, 1,2 flotation,3 and smelter operations.4,5

In order to rapidly evaluate an area for its mineral potential, a reconnaissance exploration program generally includes the following: 1. Outlining an area of interest 2. Identifying known mineral deposits 3. Bibliographic search of the literature 4. Evaluation of geochemical and geophysical surveys 5. Compilation and review of geologic maps The information now available from various government agencies regarding the mineral deposits, geology, and geochemistry may be integrated and used as a tool to rapidly evaluate an area before the field season. The databases most commonly used in the United States are the USBM MAS/HILS system and the USGS MRDS system for their information on mineral deposits; GEOREF and GEOARCHIVE for bibliographic information; and NURE data for the geochemistry and geophysics. In conjunction with the project geologist, this information may be used to plot known deposits and their geochemical signature as well as any other areas of like signature for further examination.

The results of an extensive one- year test period of a nonelectric explosives detonating system led to the mine-wide adoption of this system at the Henderson Mine in early 1978. Since that time, extensive experience with nonelectric initiation has verified the earlier results which include the following benefits: 1. Increased blasting safety 2. Improved productivity 3. Cost effectiveness 4. High reliability At the present time, while electric blasting caps still experience a limited use restricted to trunkline initiation, all heading rounds as well as the longhole bell, undercut, boundary cutoff and raise blasting are detonated non-electrically. The primary blasting agent used is AN/FO, and primers are typically one of the following products (depending on application): PETN, semi-gelatin dynamites or a nonnitroglycerin water-gel slurry.

In an autogenous grinding circuit in which feed at approximately nine inches top size is reduced to a size suitable for subsequent processing, the build- up of a "critical size" fraction in the media causes problems. A "critical size" fraction has been defined as, "media too small to effect reduction by impact grinding of ore coarser than a quarter of an inch and too large to be broken by the largest size of media in the charge. 9, (1) The buildup of a "critical size" fraction reduces the capacity of the mill, increases the grinding power requirements per ton of finished product, and generally produces a finer grind than is desired. It is general practice to overcome this problem by the addition of large diameter steel balls to the grinding charge. This has certain disadvantages, such as; (i) an increase in mill liner wear; (ii) wear on the steel balls, and; (iii) some loss in flexibility in grinding circuit operations resulting from difficulties in removing the steel balls by means other than by grinding out.

Zinc concentrates received in La Oroya zinc refinery are marmatitic in nature, contain about 11% iron and traces of other metal values, Figure 1 shows the zinc circuit. The calcine from the roasted concentrates is leached in spent zinc electrolyte. Major part of the impurities is iron which has been oxidized to its trivalent form, This is the origin of the zinc leach residue for which the ZILERET process was developed and so named. The impure liquor from the leach is sent for purification and thence to electrolysis- zinc deposits on aluminum cathodes from which: it is stripped, melted and cast into slabs Typical assays of zinc calcine and leach residue are given in Table 1. Metal values contained in the leach residue, without counting any value of iron, amount to roughly $130 per short ton.

Precious metals are commonly believed to be recovered along with sulfide minerals in flotation, but a few neutron activation analyses showed that the recoveries of gold and silver were unexpectedly low. Recoveries of platinum group metals remained unresolved due to interferences in the analyses. Electron micro-probe, scanning electron microscope and scanning auger microprobe analyses have identified nickel arsenide minerals in the ore and confirmed a close association of platinum group metals with the arsenide minerals as minute inclusions. These results indicated a need for re-evaluation of flotation procedures which have so far ignored special problems related to arsenide minerals. The electrochemical and flotation behaviors of nickel arsenide and their implications to the flotation recovery of arsenide minerals from copper-nickel bearing Duluth gabbro are presented.

Crystallization of ammonium paratungstate (APT) is frequently the last effective purification step in producing high-purity tungsten. However, crystallizer mother liquors are often several times higher in tungsten than predicted by the solubility of APT. The formation of heteropoly anions, particularly those containing phosphorus and silicon, is largely responsible. Solubility of tungsten in APT mother liquor can be linearly correlated with the concentration of these and other impurities. The problem can be overcome by direct treatment of the crystallizer feed solution with alum. By appropriate treatment, the aluminum hydroxide flocculates and is easily filtered, resulting in a purified low-aluminum crystallizer feed from which high APT yields can be attained.

In the operation of today's large scale ore-processing mills, it is extremely important to have some way of making an objective evalu¬ation of the performance of the available flotation reagents. Attempts to do this may often result in inconclusive findings since the magnitude of the difference in the mill results for any two reagents is apt to be quite small compared to the variability introduced by the process and 'the analytical procedures used to measure them. In cases where two reagents give vastly; different mill results, evaluation becomes a simple matter and as such deserves no further attention here. A question of primary concern, however, is how a mill can go about evaluating the performance of two reagents which may, for example, give a difference of only 0.001% copper in the-tailings or of 0.2% in copper recovery. The casual observer may feel that such small differences may be of little importance, but in a mill-whose daily tonnage is between 30 and 40 thousand, these differences could mean a substantial savings. Before the presentation of an actual example of a reagent testing scheme designed for just this-purpose, perhaps a few minutes should be devoted to a review of some statistical methodology to be used later in the discussion.

Any type of agitation within a confined vessel is primarily concerned with two parameters: 1) A level of agitation describing the homogeneity of the constituents (whether it be suspension or mixing) and, 2) the energy efficiency with which this level of agitation is accomplished. The following is an attempt to present a solution to the problem of adequately defining and optimizing these properties. First included is a discussion of the application of good design practices to the determination of a mechanically efficient shape to the blade elements of the propeller. These practices, excluding several appropriate modifications, have been known, but not well understood, in aircraft fluid mechanics for a number of years. Secondly, having optimized the direct impartation of energy to the medium being agitated, attention is turned to one of the more perplexing phenomena of multi-phase systems - definition and prediction of agitation levels. The result of recent study and testing is a method of scaling which the authors feel provides a lucid understanding of governing physical parameters within the agitator itself, allowing one to scale up and down with confidence.

The properties of a geologic mass may be considered from a resource or an engineering viewpoint. The primary engineering applications include ground control, excavation, bulk handling, and hydrology. This study will focus upon these areas in descending order. For an adequate geologic description, data is necessary on the following components: (1) the intact rock, (2) geologic structures, (3) contained fluids, and (4) existing pressures and temperatures, see Table 1. This information, combined with the engineering specifications, provides the basis for a formal geotechnical analysis as illustrated in Figure 1. For a structural analysis it is essential to establish the mechanical properties of the material composing the structure. This material, termed the "rock mass," consists mainly of the first two geologic components, the intact rock and geologic structures (Figure 1) Consideration of fluids will be subordinated to their role as chemical agents affecting the mechanical properties. The existence of pressures and temperatures generally lies beyond the scope of this study.

In February, 1976, Ranchers Exploration and Development Corporation obtained an option from Foote Minerals, Inc., to evaluate reprocessing of two uranium tailing piles. Foote received ownership of the Naturita and Durango tailing piles in 1967 through the purchase of Vanadium Corporation of America. The option was exercised in November, 1976, after initial testwork proved that a viable extraction technique existed. Preparation for production at Naturita began immediately with engineering and en¬vironmental permitting proceeding simultaneously. Production began in December, 1977, just 22 months after acquisition of the property and-was completed 17 months later.
