Nahcolite is a naturally occurring sodium bicarbonate mineral found principally in the Piceance Creek Basin of northwest Colorado. An 8-m thick nahcolite bed, 610 m below the surface, is the target of this first commercial nahcolite mine. A chamber and pillar mining system is developed by solution mining parallel 8-m tall by 18-m wide by 450-m cavities initiated along horizontally drilled holes. Hot water leaching, cooling crystallization and flash drying is the process. The sodium bicarbonate product is consumed by the baking, animal feed, industrial and acid rain abatement markets. A project overview, emphasizing the combination of horizontal drilling and solution mining technologies, will be presented.

The global mining industry will always face significant challenges. Some, though, are bigger than others. What do you consider the major challenges facing the mining industry as a whole and SME in particular? Without a doubt, the major issue in both coal and metal/nonmetal mining industries is the ?graying? of the workforce in all aspects of mining. As the baby boomers continue to age, valuable experience is being lost by industry, government and academia. And there is the potential for SME to lose some of its membership. Now with that said, I should note that, despite the aging of the workforce, SME membership continued to grow by 7.1 percent during 2011.

"Considering the dominant role of fertilizers in global phosphate production, it is evident that with the ever increasing development in agriculture there will be a growing demand for phosphate beneficiation. With the rapid depletion of high quality reserves, investigations into more complex and lower grade ore bodies are required. The Minerals Processing Division at Mintek has been involved in process development and flowsheet design projects on phosphate resources since 2003. This paper will discuss the processes that Mintek has explored and employed to upgrade various phosphate ore bodies (>30% Phosphorous Pentoxide (P2O5)) in preparation for end user application. These are aimed at an improved understanding of ores in terms of their varying mineralogy and the development of appropriate process routes to meet product specification. OVERVIEW OF MINTEK Mintek is a state owned science council that undertakes R&D, consulting and sells products and services into the minerals beneficiation industry. Mintek has been in existence for 83 years with a current permanent staff complement of 750 of which 300 are professionals with a tertiary education. Being a non-profit organisation, the majority of funding comes from state grant and earmarked funding. All research is needs-driven exploring innovation through technology and process optimisation trends. Owing to a solid base of expertise, extensive laboratory and pilot facilities, and a historical database of knowledge, Mintek is well positioned and equipped to execute projects on a scoping, feasibility, prefeasibility and bankable level. USES OF PHOSPHATE Phosphate is the component in fertilizer essential for root and stem development in plants as well as rejuvenation of harshly depleted soil for which there is no agricultural substitute. Phosphate rock is essential for global food security with 87% used in the production of fertilizers. In agriculture as fertilizer, phosphate is one of the three primary plant nutrients in addition to nitrogen and potassium. In former times, it was simply crushed and used as is, but the crude form is now only used in organic farming. Normally it is chemically treated to make Single superphosphate (SSP), Triple superphosphate (TSP), or Mono-ammonium phosphates (MAP) and Di-ammonium phosphates (DAP), which has a higher concentration of phosphate and is more soluble, thus more suitable for plant absorption."

Distribution of temperature within the lithosphere can be significantly affected by the movement of ground water. Stallman (1960) presented the basic equation for the simultaneous transfer of heat and fluid in a porous medium and first used earth temperatures to determine aquifer permeability. Subsequently, studies of rock and soil temperatures were used to determine the flow of water through clay layers separating aquifers (Bredehoeft and Papadopulos, 1965; and Sorey, 1971), and to locate shallow aquifers (Cartwright, 1968; Birman, 1969). Cartwright (1968) showed that shallow aquifers maintain a nearly constant temperature throughout the year and that heat is exchanged between the aquifer and land surface. These temperature data also suggest that shallow aquifers hydrologically connected to surface-water systems have significantly greater effect on temperature distribution than aquifers in the deep artesian basins. Water wells developed in the shallow glacial and dolomite aquifers to depths of over 122 meters (400 feet) in northern and central Illinois produce water at temperatures very close to the mean annual air temperature. An analysis of the character of the rocks and soils suggests that the tem¬perature gradient should, and does, vary according to changes in thermal conductivity due to changes in lithology. This is because, under conditions of steady and uniform flow of heat from the earth's interior to the surface, a greater temperature gradient is required in poorly conductive rocks than in highly conductive rocks to transmit the same quantity of heat. Technological change is continually affecting the mining industry and the many papers being presented at this meeting reflect this fact. I fully agree that miners must remain fully cognizant of technology that can change mining costs and therefore your competitive marketplace. Despite the embrace of new technology and effective mine management techniques, the mining enterprise may not realize increased net income if the structure of the minerals marketplace is not understood. An important segment of the marketing structure for minerals is transportation. Transportation costs per ton can be much greater than the mining costs per ton and may accordingly overshadow hard earned gains in productivity. Change is greatly affecting the transportation industry but the change is driven more by governmental policy than technology. Although some technological advances are occurring in the bulk transportation business, the changes I want to address arise from policy. Policy changes have come from legislation in the 1970's culminating with the Staggers Act of 1980 and ensuing Interstate Commerce Commission decisions.

Under the terms of the 1970 amendments to the Clean Air Act, the EPA established national ambient air quality standards for a number of pollutants. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) was one of these pollutants. These ambient air quality standards have had perhaps their biggest impact on the power utilities. In an effort to meet the air quality standards set forth by the EPA, utilities using high sulfur fuels have been forced to install flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems. The majority of FGD systems in operation today are nonregenerable systems, that is the by-product of the system is disposed of, usually into settling ponds. Limestone slurry is the most common reagent used to remove SO from the flue gases. The calcium carbonate (limestone) slurry interacts with the flue gas, absorbing the SO2 and forming a by-product of calcium sulfate/sulfite which is disposed of.

The current understanding of the mechanics of rock fracturing during smooth blasting is largely empirical and qualitative due to an inability to model the dynamic process at the fundamental level. In order to overcome this difficulty, a numerical simulation of smooth blasting is performed using the Dynamic Lattice Network Model. This model is capable of simulating material inhomogeneities and the dynamic evolution of fragmentation at the micromechanical level. In this study, smooth blasting techniques are numerically analyzed to characterize the development of the damage rock zone during explosive fracturing.

As the flaws in the population balance model (PBM) comminution model are examined more deeply, further errors and problems were discovered. The Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm for systems of constrained non-linear equations was used to solve the dynamic PBM grinding equations to obtain the grinding selection and breakage rate functions. The fact that the PBM model equation Inverse Problem is degenerate or underspecified is demonstrated. Multiple solutions to the same PBM equations are provided. It is shown that there is no unique solution to the Inverse Problem unless additional constraints are provided or assumptions are made such as the Arbiter-Bhrany normalization assumption. The severity of the non-uniqueness problem for dynamic grinding is demonstrated. Each solution to a dynamic PBM, while giving the same prediction for a given grinding time interval, gives different solutions or predictions for mill composition for other grinding times. Actual experimental grinding data was assessed to determine the functionality of mill selection and breakage functions.

The concrete masonry industry, represented by the National Concrete Masonry Association has significantly expanded its markets since the industry's inception. The concrete masonry industry has developed and refined concrete masonry units by producing a variety of quality products on automated machines. In the sixties, architectural concrete masonry units gained popularity. In the seventies, the concrete paver market expanded. In the eighties, segmental retaining wall units became popular. The industry continues to research and develop new products and applications for concrete masonry to satisfy the needs of designers, specifiers, installers and owners. Both existing and innovative technologies in the concrete masonry industry are discussed.

The Bureau of Mines' Tuscaloosa Research Center has developed a field test unit (FTU) which dewaters mine and/or mineral processing by-product slurries. The feed material (by-product slurry) is mixed with a known quantity and specific type of synthetic polymer (usually a polyacrylamide) to induce flocculation in a continuous operation. The flocculated material passes over a specific number and size of slotted stationary screens which separates the flocculated solid material from the "clean" water. The "static screens" are positioned at a fixed angle to maximize flow capacity and capture of the solids content. An investigation was conducted at an industrial crushed stone operation located near Birmingham, AL, to determine if the Bureau's FTU could successfully dewater the waste slurry generated during grinding and sizing operations at this facility. The investigation showed that waste slurries could be dewatered to 50 pct solids, at a polymer cost of approximately $0.85/ton of dry solids treated, and resulted in approximately 85 to 95 pct solids recovery. The dewatered material continued to consolidate and reached 69 pct solids in 24 h. Presently, the waste slurry generated at this facility is discarded into impoundments. However, this research has identified the recovered waste as an economically marketable product.

The Bardon Trimount, Inc. stone quarry in Ashland, Massachusetts was the recent subject of a quarry closure review report. The quarry produces aggregate using standard drilling and blasting techniques. Stone is processed at an on-site plant. Noise monitoring data collected during the closure review indicate that the quarry generally operates within the quiet range. There is a decrease in noise while the quarry is not operating. Levels of dust associated with the quarry are low. Unpaved roadways are the greatest contributors of fugitive dust associated with the mining operation. The quarry cannot be seen from any homes within the town of Ashland, except during the winter months. The visual impact of the quarry on surrounding properties is minimal. Further quarry development is likely to reduce visibility of the quarry from some areas.

Throughout a variety of successfully completed and ongoing projects since then, Variable Density TBM technology has demonstrated its advantages in a wide range of applications. Mott MacDonald and Project Management Advisors are providing Technical and Project Management services for San Diego County for the Courthouse Commons Project. The Courthouse Commons Project involves the redevelopment of three downtown blocks owned by San Diego County and construction of an Inmate Transfer Tunnel between the County Central Jail and the San Diego Central Court. The tunnel will be 327 feet long, crosses the San Diego Fault and is being constructed using the Sequential Excavation Method (SEM). This paper discusses the history and procure‑ ment strategy for the project, the technical aspects of the transfer tunnel and the con‑ struction progress of the tunnel to date.

In order to understand the intricate nature of blast damage mechanism and to counter the associated problems, small scale blasting experiments were performed on hydrostone, concrete and granite. This was followed by a 2.4 m x 2.7 m (8'x 9') drifting operation in a quartzite quarry. Interior as well as exterior damage was assessed by different techniques. On the basis of the experimental results, the effect of explosive characteristics on the damage was examined.

The mining industry continues to be under expanded scrutiny in the health and safety arena, both from federal regulators and the media. While this paper will briefly discuss how enforcement activity, both with citations issued and the size of penalties proposed, the primary focus will be practical suggestions to deal with some key, high-risk areas for a mine operator which could have substantial impact, both in terms of liability and mine operations. It goes without saying that all mine operators need to continue compliance programs they have in place with careful ongoing evaluation of those plans for areas of improvement. The focus here will not be compliance as such, but rather steps to take and procedures to have in place to try to minimize risks in the face of the potential for more significant liability. Thus, our focus will be procedures to respond to unwarrantable failure citations, immediately reportable accidents, and to deal with potential pattern of violation issues.1

There is a critical need for effective instructional materials at the university level and for an upgrading of mine safety and health in the mining engineering curriculum. A fundamental approach to mine safety and health is recast into the familiar 3 E's: engineering, education, and enforcement, in that order. Each is briefly reviewed and their interdependence emphasized. A unique philosophy for successfully integrating safety and health principles into the mining engineering curriculum is offered. The concept of textbook ?tailoring? is discussed and defended, permitting rapid assemblage and synthesis of existing educational materials. Final recommendations are made for a u, comprehensive approach to mine safety and health education in the undergraduate curriculum.

The 1980 Mine Dewatering Act was enacted to protect water rights and to allow mine dewatering to proceed where impairment of a water right might have otherwise created a bar to mine development. In New Mexico, new appropriations for beneficial use are subject to the State Engineer's jurisdiction and are granted only upon a showing of non-impairment. Before 1980, mine dewatering was not considered a beneficial use, nor was it considered waste. The Act brings mine dewatering under the jurisdiction of the State Engineer, makes it subject to the same requirements as an application for appropriation for beneficial use, grants the right to replace the water of users whose rights would be impaired by mine dewatering without a plan of replacement, and extends the right of replacement to non-mining appropriations of water for beneficial use, Application of the Act requires determination of the definition of impairment (the threshold of significant impact on existing water rights), hydrologic evaluations to determine the impact of the proposed dewatering, and preparation and execution of a plan of replacement to avoid impairment of existing rights.

In the municipality of Rio Quito, department of Chocó, Colombia, alluvial gold has been illegally exploited by suction dredging. The project consists of using geospatial techniques to identify degraded areas and analyze the viability of remediation dredging to mitigate environmental liabilities. The area has sediments contaminated by mercury and cyanide, so it is necessary to reconform the riverbed with the remediated material. Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is a common and well-known health hazard in the mining environment. The current approved method for monitoring both the organic and elemental carbon (OC, EC) portions of DPM is a laboratory method with a turnaround time of approximately one week. In order to evaluate exposure levels and take corrective action before overexposures occur, a portable real-time device capable of quantifying both OC and EC is needed. To that end, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) designed and tested a device based on narrow bandpass optical filters that is capable of targeting infrared absorbance bands associated with DPM. Five optical bandpass filters were chosen based on previous work quantifying DPM using Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometry. The resulting device, referred to as a filtometer, is optimized to exclusively determine DPM and could serve as a cost-effective, field-portable alternative to laboratory-grade FT-IR analysis and instrumentation. The performance of the filtometer was investigated by calibrating FT-IR data from DPM (dependent variable) to the filtometer spectra (predictor variables) using a partial leastsquares (PLS) and ordinary least squares (OLS) approach. The mining value chain plays an important role in our societal development. Even in a circular economy, mining and raw materials are in great demand, and so are skilled engineers. In Germany, many students decide to pursue STEM studies in the tertiary degree. Nevertheless, the OECD reports low completion rates in obtaining the degree of studies [1]. Generally, the dropout rates in STEM education are high [2]. Many students have difficulties with basic subjects such as science and mathematics, in which they lack knowledge they should have acquired in school [2]. With the German STE(A)M project PepperMINT (https://peppermint.thga.de/), the Technische Hochschule Georg Agricola (THGA) offers a digital and open educational platform, as a dynamic, massive open, online course (MOOC) for students and prospective engineers. The project is funded by the RAG-Stiftung (RAG-Foundation; No. 20-0004). Using adaptable MOOC classes and applied examples from the wide-ranging cycle of mining activities, we motivate students to engage in STEM studies. Our adaptive and application-oriented content demonstrates the diversity of jobs and career paths in the mining industry. The integrations of applied examples and research activities of the Technische Hochschule Georg Agricola can increase the curiosity and motivation of learners. In mathematics, mine-surveiying technologies and geomonitoring methods (see figure 1) can be used to teach trigonometry. Additionally the concept of the free open online classes enables students in high school to get insights into the field of engineering before they decide the subject of their studies. For freshmen who already decided to pursue a STEM degree, the PepperMINT courses can help to identify and close knowledge gaps and to align different levels of knowledge within a heterogeneous student body. Empowering students in STEM education and integrating examples from mining research can help us train the mining engineers of the future.
