Soil CO2 flux serves a critical indicator of ecosystem function and carbon cycling in disturbed landscapes. This study measured and quantified temporal patterns and environmental drivers of soil respiration across fifteen revegetated treatment plots over a 12-week period (July-October 2025). Utilizing automated CO2 flux measurements, we investigated differences between treatments and quantified their relationships with soil temperature, moisture, and atmospheric pressure. One-way ANOVA revealed significant treatment effects on CO2 flux (F4, 442 =14.1, p < 0.001, η2=0.113), with amended plots exhibiting 40–50% higher mean fluxes than control plots. Weekly temporal analysis demonstrated distinct temporal patterns, with peak fluxes registering in mid-August before a gradual decline. Multiple regression analyses showed that soil temperature (β=0.043, p < 0.001) and moisture (β=2.31, p < 0.001) are the primary flux drivers, together accounting for 18.2% of total variability (adjusted R2=0.182). Atmospheric pressure had a moderate effect (β=1.13, p < 0.001), detectable only in multivariable analysis. Variance partitioning indicated that environmental factors explained more variability (18.7%) than treatment effect (10.5%), with approximately 71% of flux variability attributed to finer spatial or temporal variability. These results demonstrate that revegetation amendments enhance soil biological activity and impact geochemical cycling, and that temperature and moisture are dominant controls on respiration dynamics in reclaimed mine soils. The findings provide quantifiable benchmarks for ecosystem recovery through altering soil biology and geochemistry and for quantifying carbon sequestration potential in post-mining landscapes.

Sophisticated computer analysis methods such as finite elements, finite differences, and numerical integration have become tools in the mineral processing industry for design of large mill shells. While use of such methods allows the analyst-designer to take new freedoms with his designed structure, there are also pitfalls and dangers which must be recognized for the proper use of such sophisticated tools. One of the worst of these is treating any computer answers as "gospel truth". The present paper discusses the knowledge required by the analyst-designer for proper use of computer analysis, as well as explaining to the layman how to identify questionable areas in such structural analyses.

British Columbia is geologically favourable for a rich variety of industrial mineral occurrences. Some have been produced for years, others overlooked until recently. Major production occurs for asbestos, gypsum, limestone, magnesite, silica and sulfur; lesser production for a dozen others. For several of the minerals, potential is much greater than existing production. New production opportunities exist also for diamonds, niobium and REE minerals, fluorspar, kyanite, nepheline syenite, talc, and several others. Alberta, though geologically less diverse, also has many industrial minerals. Limestone, salt and sulfur have the major production; clay and shale, silica, sodium sulfate and a few others lesser production. Opportunities exist for expanded production, and for new production in heavy (Ti -Zr) minerals, formation brines (Ca-Mg-I-Li), and gypsum.

Significant resources grading less than about 1 % nickel occur in magmatic sulfide deposits of two types. In the Mt. Keith type, extensive zones of disseminated nickel sulfides occur in the central portions of certain synvolcanic dunite-peridotite sills of komatiitic affinity in Archean greens tone terranes. In the Duluth type, disseminated copper-nickel sulfides occur near the basal margins of intrusions of flood basaltic affinity associated with intracontinental rifting. In both types, the parent magmas became saturated with sulfide following the onset of fractional crystallization and the separation of the immiscible sulfide melt was accompanied by the precipitation of a relatively large proportion of silicates. The abundant silicate crystals impeded the coalescense and accumulation of the sulfide droplets with the resulting formation of large but low grade deposits.

Groundwater monitoring conducted at an acidic uranium-tailings impoundment in Wyoming and at one in Ontario indicate that at these unlined impoundments situated on unconfined sand aquifers, there exist well-developed plumes of contaminated groundwater. In the literature similar results are reported for three other unconfined aquifers at mill sites in Wyoming. The plumes extend for distances of several hundred to a few thousand metres from the impoundments. They have a zone of low pH beneath and adjacent to the impoundments and a larger zone of near-neutral pH that extends to the outer limits of the plume. The low-pH zones are generally small compared to the neutral-pH zones because the advance rate of the fronts of acidic tailings-derived water is slower than the average velocity of groundwater which controls the advance of the high pH zone. The retardation of the acid fronts is a result of geochemical reactions that cause hydrogen-ion consumption in a slowly-advancing neutralization zone. Within each of the plumes, the low-pH zone has high concentrations of transition metals, heavy metals and radionuclides. In the neutral-pH zones all of the metals and radionuclides occur at significantly lower concentrations and are generally at levels much below those specified in national drinking water standards. An exception at two of the Wyoming sites is uranium, which exists at levels close to the drinking water limit. A second exception is ferrous iron at the Ontario site, which occurs at high concentrations throughout most of the plume. The carbonate alkalinity at this site is much lower than at the Wyoming sites. The field data indicate that even in very permeable aquifers with a low content of silt and clay, there is normally a considerable capacity for acid-front retardation. To take advantage of this capacity to control contaminant movement in the design, operation and decommissioning of tailings impoundments, it is necessary to be able to predict the rate of acid-front movement. This predictive task has two primary components. The first is to identify the important flow paths from the tailings through the groundwater system and the second is to determine the degree of acid-front retardation that will occur as the tailings-derived water moves along these flow paths. Relative to these two tasks determination of the effects of hydrodynamic dispersion is generally of lesser importance and simple approximations that do not involve field or laboratory tests are probably adequate. In order to effectively apply the acid neutralization concept to the prediction of subsurface contaminant migration at uranium-mill tailings, improved representations of hydrogeochemical behavior of iron and aluminum in the neutralization zone and of the consumption of hydrogen ions through reactions with carbonate and aluminum-silicate minerals are required. Along with the hydrogen ions contained in the tailings water the ferrous iron represents a large potential source of acid but the extent to which ferrous iron converts to ferric iron to produce acid is problematic. Detailed hydrogeochemical evaluation of existing contaminant plumes and the performance of laboratory experiments under appropriate redox conditions ore prerequisites for the improvement of predictive models. However, the existing field and laboratory data provide a basis for preliminary predictions of contaminant migration from acidic uranium tailings impoundments.

This paper summarizes the Bureau of Reclamation&apos;s experience in the use of boring machines to excavate six major tunnels on the Bureau&apos;s water resources development projects in the western United States. The summary of experience is presented as a compilation of brief case studies for each of the six tunnels. Each compilation presents data on the tunnel dimensions, geological characteristics of the excavated rock, the tunneling machine used, machine operation, muck handling, method of tunnel support, ventilation system, and related information. The listing of the six tunnels in Table 1 reflects a diversity of tunnel lengths and diameters. However, despite this diversity of dimensions as well as the variety of rock encountered during excavation, the six tunnels have one major characteristic in common: their excavation was significantly expedited by the use of boring machines. Beginning with the 10,079-foot-long Tunnel No. 1 on the Navajo Indian Irrigation Project in New Mexico - the Bureau&apos;s first tunnel to be excavated by a boring machine - the boring machines, or "moles," have demonstrated their effectiveness in rapid and economical tunnel excavation. Tunnel No. 1, virtually 2 miles long, was bored through in 9 months, an unprecedented achievement in Bureau engineering experience, as compared with tunnels previously excavated by conventional means. Once exploration is complete, "winning" of the ore can be viewed as fundamentally a bulk handling proposition. Whether it is to strip, break, size, extract, load, haul, or even process, the success of each of these phases will depend upon how effectively one can utilize-the methods and tools that are available in bulk handling. Since as much as 30 to 60% of the total delivered price of raw materials can be attributed to handling and shipping (ref. 1), this expenditure may spell the success or failure of an entire mining venture. In fact, it has become increasingly evident that handling and shipping are so intimately associated with mining that only when they are duly considered throughout the mine-to -smelter master plan as an integral part of a total system can an optimum operation be expected and the most economical ton of ore obtained, this total systems approach should not only take in handling and haulage in and out of the mine, but also storage and transfer at the terminals (ref. 2,3,t), including ship and barge loading and unloading which are likewise a major consideration (ref. 5). Much has been developed during the past century in bulk handling, particularly in its expanding use in the mining industry. In view of the major role bulk handling has played and will continue to play in mining, in commemorating AIME&apos;s centennial, this paper will attempt to outline the state-of-the-art at this three-quarter point of the 20th century - one that is marked by its industrial revolution and rapidly accelerating technological advances. The Tek Process can produce masonry products such as bricks, roof or wall tiles, and block from virtually any inorganic waste. In the process the aggregate raw materials, portland cement, water and common chemicals are first mixed together; then mechanically subjected to several thousand pound pressure per square inch. This causes a novel chemical reaction between the cement, chemicals and water; producing the "patented" Tek adhesive binder which holds the aggregate together in a stone-like mix. Simultaneously, the desired product shape is formed. The building modules can have strengths of 8000 p.s.i. (pounds per square inch) with completely sound aggregates utilizing air curing for a period of 28 days. With most aggregates, 3000 p.s.i. is achieved within 24 hours. Eventual strengths usually exceed 5000 p.s.i. with almost any raw material. Water absorption ranges from 5-7.5 percent. Both absorption and strength figures are superior to the most rigid of any and all A.S.T.M. specifications for the highest quality bricks. In most locations, the product (when brick shaped is called Tekbrik) can be produced significantly more economically than can comparable grades of clay or other bricks, be- cause almost any inorganic waste materials or pollutant can be used as a raw material. The process results in a lower manufacturing cost as compared to clay bricks; fuel cost to operate a clay kiln represents a substantial portion of the total cost. Capital expenditure for a Tek plant also is lower due to the large investment in clay kilns. Transportation savings also are important, clay brick factories must be very large because the kilns are uneconomical unless they are large. Most bricks are manufactured at the sites of clay deposits in relatively uninhabited areas. The cost of transportation to the job site represents a considerable percentage of the selling price.

Computor analysis has opened a new world of information for the mining of resources. This paper is directed at the mining of coal. The same procedures apply to most mining projects. The available facts when evaluated against the variables produce the answers. The project must be carefully analyzed, so that the facts can be organized in a data file. The file can be expanded as additional information is obtained during the entire life of the mine. If the mine is pre-planned, the file will be expanded in an orderly fashion and updated information will be available at all times. The development of a property goes through several phases; Exploration, Economic Analysis, Development, Production, and Reclamation. Each phase is an expansion of the data file. The validity of the answers is directly related to the accuracy and quantity of available data. The basis for a data file is horizontal position, and elevation of each piece of information. A coordinate system and datum are reference for a digital (X, Y and Z) position in a spatial system, a three dimensional digital model of the mine. The current practice is to use the State Plane Coordinate system and elevations as established by the U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. Each state has adopted this system by law. In the event there is litigation, it is an advantage to have the data on the legally recognized system. The control must be expanded so that all data can be assigned a digital position, and planned to fulfill the requirements for all phases of the mining operation. The purpose of this paper is to investigate trends in exploration expenditures of a selected group of mining companies for the interval 1968 through 1971. The paper also compares these trends with other financial factors that are associated with various groups of companies and comments on the implications of these trends. Although a four-year interval is hardly enough time to establish a long-range set of trends from which operating rules can be derived, the fact that the four years selected are in the immediate past gives some sense of relevance to the matter of exploration expenditures at the present time and in the near future. The sample under study here consists of 21 mining companies. Of these, 19 are listed on the New York Stock Exchange and 2 are listed on the American Exchange. Twenty are American, one is Canadian. All are fundamentally "mining companies" in that they derive the bulk of their income from the extraction, sale, and at times, fabrication of metals from their own mines. This is in contrast to companies which have mineral exploration departments but derive the bulk of their revenues from sources other than mining; for example, from oil and gas sates, Also, no companies which can be considered strictly as exploration companies are included in this study. Although this definition held up fairly well when studying this list in 1968, the strict application of this definition became more difficult through the years up to the present time. In 1971, three or four of the companies were changing their character in that they were phasing out of the mining business, and either deriving their income or planning to derive a substantial part of their income from activities other than mining. The Port of New York and New Jersey is one of the most heavily used transportation arteries in the world, handling nearly 40 per-cent of the North Atlantic shipping trade and directly providing nearly 230,000 jobs to the local economy. In 2004, $100 billion worth of consumer goods moved through the port. To accommodate future cargo volumes in the port, which are expected to double over the next decade and possibly quadruple in 40 years, deeper shipping channels are needed to provide access for a new generation of cargo mega-ships with drafts exceeding 13.7-m (45-ft) when loaded. Current channels within the harbor range in depths up to 13.7-m (45-ft), thus preventing carriers from using these larger ships, or requiring significant reductions in cargo to achieve lesser drafts to operate safely within the harbor. As part of the Harbor Deepening Project, the Anchor-age Channel would be deepened to 15.2 m (50 ft) below mean low water (MLW), for a length of 5,790 m (19,000 ft). The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) owns, operates and maintains two existing water siphons in the harbor. Due to their shallow depth, both existing siphons must be relocated before dredging of the Anchorage Channel can be completed. Tom Costanzo, manager of capital programs for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ), says that ?While the re-location of the existing siphons under the Anchorage Channel is vital to the success of the deepening program, it is also a story of cooperation among key agencies at different levels of government resulting in improvements that will benefit the people of this region greatly.?

"INTRODUCTION The small strain assumption routinely made in tunnel analyses remains sufficient from an engineering point of view as long as convergences do not exceed 10%. More specifically, small strain theory assumes that deformations are so small (in relation to the size of the underground opening) that any geometric change in the continuum can be disregarded (Fig. 1a). In fact, however, the geometry is updated during loading (or unloading) according to large strain theory and thus equilibrium and stiffness are evaluated on the deformed configuration of the continuum (Fig. 1b).In problems involving large deformations, where the undeformed and the deformed tunnel geometry differ significantly, small strain theory leads to erroneous and sometimes even nonsensical results (i.e. it can predict wall displacements even greater than the excavated radius under conditions of very low stiffness and strength, high in situ stress and low support pressure). This can easily be verified from the widely applied relationships for the ground response curve. For example, in the ideal case of linearly elastic behaviour, the convergence of an unsupported opening equals (1+?) s0 / E (where E, ? and s0 denote the Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio and initial isotropic stress, respectively) and is greater than 100% for E < (1+?) s0. Although convergences are less than 10% in the great majority of tunnelling projects, very large deformations may take place when tunnelling through weak rocks under a high overburden (Fig. 2). This paper will first present a very simple and practicable way to account for large strains, based entirely on the results of routine small strain analyses, and will subsequently show the importance of addressing large strains in tunnel analysis and design with reference to three typical case studies of tunnelling in squeezing ground."

Surface mining of coal in the South developed into a major industry during the 1960&apos;s. The economic significance of the industry is much greater than is readily apparent when one considers only the value of the coal mined. The abun-dant supply of relatively inexpensive steam coal for electric power generation that has been derived from the surface mines has provided the foundation for the industrial expansion that has occurred throughout the South. The region, in gen-eral, has enjoyed the benefits of plentiful low cost electric power. However, re-cent political decisions, at all levels of government, threaten to destroy or severely curtail the surface mining of coal and eliminate the economic advantages once enjoyed by the region. These political decisions are rapidly changing the basic rules of operation and fundamental economics of surface coal mining. Recent changes, resulting from the enactment of environmental and health and safety laws and various bureaucratic rules and regulations, have had a three-fold effect: 1) Greatly increased operating cost, 2) increased lead times for mine development, 3) limited potential reserve base for future mining. Also current legislative proposals are casting a shadow of uncertainty over the future of all coal mining operations that has created serious delays and in-creased cost for the expansion of the coal industry necessary to meet our project independence goals. "Underground construction poses certain challenges for all parties involved because the actual ground conditions are often unpredictable. Highly complex projects like tunnel construction are affected by various uncertainties. To address this complexity, the construction contract has to be flexible enough to be adapted to the actual conditions (e.g. divergent ground conditions, work delays). However, the adaptation of a tunnel construction contract does not guarantee the absence of a margin of interpretation. The perfect construction contract is an illusion because ex ante statements of the actual ground conditions are not feasible. This paper will discuss contractual parameters that must be considered in order to enable an effective adaptation of the contract during excavation. It is therefore necessary to discuss the following topics: decision-making competence, variable remuneration, fair-risk allocation, value engineering and partnering between client and contractor. INTRODUCTION Thinking of tunnel construction processes, engineers’ first (or at least second) association is about ground conditions. When constructing under the surface, the project is directly related to the ground conditions; however, ground conditions are known fairly well in advance. The estimated conditions can be the same or can also differ from the existing ones. A clear view of the conditions is possible only by driving through the section. What Hoek calls “Geological unpredictability which is guaranteed to provide some surprises in even the simplest tunnelling job” is, in addition to contractual issues, one of two critical aspects of modern tunneling (Hoek 1982). Almost no research tries to figure out, what flexibility in this context means and how to approach it in the contracts. Papers dealing with the New Austrian Tunnel Method (NATM) pose some principles to meet the requests for flexibility (cf. Austrian Society for Geomechanics 2011). However, it remains unclear how to create contracts in order to make them “flexible” enough to react to divergent ground conditions."

In the development of the ultimate pit limits for a narrow ore body, pa¬rameters necessary in the design of a functional, or working, pit become highly sensitive factors in the determination of ore reserve levels and their associated waste to ore stripping ratios. Through the use of geologic cross sections, ore reserves can be roughly calculated by utilizing a straight line approximation for pit wall slopes. The optimum position of the pit floor can be substantially altered from such a preliminary design though with the introduction of functional mining parameters, such as a ramping network, and working bench heights, berm widths, and bench to bench wall angles. Originally a computer program was developed to quickly evaluate changes in cross-section pit design with minimal alteration of input data. After developing a satisfactory technique of cross-section evaluation which incorporates working mine parameters, an optimization algorithm, or procedure, was developed and included in the program to eliminate much of the tedious manual decision-making required in determining the optimum location of the pit floor on each cross section. Optimization in this case implies the maximum profit pit. When pit and processing costs are defined or hypothesized, this computer program can be used to design the maximum profit pit, constrained by the recognized functional mining parameters. A second way of stating the optimization is that the program can be used to develop a pit design which minimizes waste stripping at any desired ore reserve level. The basic method of cross-section evaluation parallels present manual methods. Program input is a combination of data obtained directly from cross sections developed for, geological interpretation and pit design parameters selected by the mine planner. As a result it is easy for the mine planner to comprehend what the program is accomplishing, and thus participate in the development of the computer assisted design.

This study aimed to produce magnesium oxide (MgO) particles with different properties from dolomite ore using an experimental procedure comprising four stages: sample preparation (S1), HCl leaching (S2), precipitation (S3), and calcination (S4). Three different base sources (NaOH, KOH, and NH4OH) were used as precipitant in the third stage to obtain magnesium hydroxide [Mg(OH)2] from a leachate solution, which was obtained in the second stage. Next, Mg(OH)2 particles generated by different alkali sources were calcined at various temperatures from 600–1000 °C for different durations (1–5 h). The effect of these base types on the properties of each product was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and wet chemical analyses. The experimental results indicated that each product was identified as periclase (MgO) mineral, which was produced with a specific surface area (SSA) of 4.49–44.54 m2 /g depending on the production conditions. The surface roughness of the MgO particles increased with increasing calcination temperature. SEM analyses showed that MgO particles produced at a temperature of 600 or 800 °C were amorphous, indicating that the process was not influenced by the base type, but MgO crystals were smooth when the calcination temperature was 1000 °C. Finally, it was determined from all experimental findings that MgO particles produced via the addition of NaOH have superior properties (such as higher SSA and lower surface roughness) compared with MgO particles produced with KOH or NH4OH as the alkali source. These properties led to great improvement of its usability in industry.

I am going to discuss gold mining in Mexico during the last twenty centuries and try to suggest some of the futures that may develop in this industry in the next decade. Before I start this rapid review of such a long developing mining tradition, T must give credit to my sources. I an, talking here as an associate of Commoditi,c,s Reseflrch Unit Ltd. of London (better known as CRU) and as a principal of Ainsworth-Jenkins Holdings, an international mineral resource consultant group that has been exploring and deveJoping mining properties in Mexico and Central America for the last six years. CRU is the leading consultancy providing industry, governments and financial institu­tions with analysis and advice on the metals and the mining industries. They recently completed a three volume study entitled Gold Mining Opportunities in Mexico. This .<1tudy describes Mexico, the business environment, its geology and details its gold mining potential with property descriptions and maps. I have adopted and adapted the s11mmari.zed Mexican government statistics and rlrawn on some of the historical comments in these volumes. However, I do not have ti me (nor would it be appropriate) to be giving the details of the CRU work. Jorge Ordonez, whose shoes I am trying to fill today, was a major contributor to the study and it was an honour to be asked by Willem Beunderman, the Principal Editor, to step in when Jorge was unfortunately unable to be here. Your interesting and well-written paper brings up the issue of the purpose or use of a mineral property appraisal, specifically the value of these evaluations when the quality and quantity of the mineral resource to be exploited have not been thoroughly investigated. I am not a practicing professional in regards to valuation of limestone investment opportunities. I simply wish to make a few generic observations about the appraisal process in order to stimulate meaningful thinking by appraisal professionals whose reports may be reviewed by professional investors and "laypersons" alike. It is my contention that the analysis given in your paper is very thorough, considering the data that was made available to you. But I would not like to be the person responsible for investment decision making without having a feel for the risk involved. Therefore, the reviewer must classify this type of analysis as relatively "subjective" because they have not received an indication of the inherent risk involved in exploiting a mineral resource. This risk can best be quantified by using probabilistic methods in conjunction with the quality and quantity of the mineral to be produced. Most appraisals passively ignore this problem. Specifically, you have accurately identified the various costs and values entering the economic appraisal process. These can usually be quantified with a great deal more certainty than the capability of the resource to provide 25 years of quality material. Also, in Cases A (West Virginia) and B (Alabama), you are fortunate enough to have previous operations data. What if there had never been production from these properties? How does a potential mineral property investor evaluate the resource capability to meet various projected financial outcomes without spending a good deal of up-front capital to drill and delineate enough quality resources for a 20-plus year operation.

This is a world of change and has been from the beginning. There are constant efforts on the part of natural forces to wear down the high spots and fill in the low spots. Wind and water over eons of time tunnel through obstacles and build windways and waterways to make movement of air and water easier and more efficient. It is a natural, never ending, ever changing continuing effort. Man in his struggle to survive, and to progress, has had to adapt the terrain of the earth to fit his needs the best he could. First, he used natural caves to protect him from the elements; then he learned how to build earth and rock-moving tools from antlers, bone, rocks, and sticks and adapted his cave to increase his security and provide better protection from heat and cold and from his predatory enemies. As his numbers increased, so did the necessity of further adapting his environment to accommodate his needs. Water was usually not available when and where needed, especially in the desert areas where civilization developed, and long tunnels were drilled to intercept ground waters and lead them to underground caves carved out of soft limestone. Most of the tunnels of early man were to bring water from where it was to where man needed it. Then, as now, as man increased his chances for physical survival, he turned to the quality of life -- and this reflected in the concern for life after death. This lead to the elaborate shafts and tunnels for the protection and prservation of the more affluent noblemen and pharaohs of the early Egyptian civilization. Man used the underground for the stable temperature and for protection and safety.
