The Support Technology Optimization Program (STOP) has been developed by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to provide a comprehensive tool for evaluating the performance of available secondary roof support systems and designs based on support strength, convergence, cost, installation time and material handling considerations. This program uses engineering models developed from full-scale testing of numerous supports under controlled loading conditions in the unique NIOSH Mine Roof Simulator load frame to determine the support load-displacement performance as a function of the various sup- port design parameters. Both standing supports, such as wood cribs installed within the entry, and intrinsic supports such as cable bolts, can be evaluated. Support systems can be designed and compared for use in a new mining section or to evaluate potential replacements for an existing design. The support design requirements are defined from 1) estimating the failure height in the immediate roof, 2) in-mine measure- ments of support and strata interaction or development of ground reaction curves from numerical modeling, 3) the performance of an existing support system, or 4) from any arbitrary load and convergence criteria. All settings can be saved to permit resuming an evaluation in progress at a later time. This paper presents the updated MS Windows version of this tool, which can be easily installed and run on a personal computer. This Windows implementation will feature a project and application scenario setup where multiple scenarios can be assigned to one project. Scenarios can then be compared on support parameters and cost. Cost parameters can be provided either as individual cost items or using a price grouping feature. Additional support performance curves and/or additional ground reaction curves will be distributed with program updates as new information is developed. Users can also provide their own support and/or ground reaction curves.

"As mine operators continuously look for ways to improve functionality and increase capacity of their facilities, existing process equipment is often pushed to and past its designed limitations. As a result, equipment manufacturers are asked for economical solutions to meet redefined processing needs. Newmont USA (Newmont) in Nevada was faced with such a need in their Carbon-in-Leach (CIL) train. In a collaborative effort between Newmont and Derrick Corporation, tests were conceived to assess the viability of drop in replacement screen using a three dimensional screen panel. The urethane pyramid screen panel was designed to increase flux while maintaining the existing equipment footprint. The test is the end result of an ongoing research and development project that Derrick undertook in an effort to refine and upgrade their urethane screening media. The application of this new screening media is presented for this CIL application along with future plans to implement the technology in trash, safety, carbon dewatering, carbon sizing, and other scalping applications.INTRODUCTION In Spring of 2014, Process Machinery Associates (PMA), Derrick Corporation’s (Derrick) local area representative, met with Newmont USA (Newmont) to discuss the operation of the in tank screens in the carbon in leach (CIL) train at Twin Creeks, near Golconda, Nevada. The process was originally designed for 13,000 +tons per day (tpd) but has been steadily rising since the plant was commissioned and now Newmont requires 16,000 tpd to be processed. The original screens were running at their maximum capacity and Newmont required additional screening capacity to continue the upward trend in production. Physical separation by use of screening is one of mineral processing oldest methods. Screening media can be prone to blinding and pegging and the necessary support structures required for finer apertures result in smaller open areas. Therefore, more screening area generally requires larger panels and therefore larger machines, screening media that doesn’t blind, or a combination of both. In an effort to avoid larger machines, Derrick Corporation had been working on a revolutionary three dimensional panel which would add non blinding screen area in the same footprint of an existing machine. Alpha testing of the new screen panels began at Newmont Mill 2/5 (Carlin, Nevada) in July of 2013 and was still occurring when PMA approached Twin Creeks about beta testing a refined machine and pyramid panel. After presenting the initial results, Twin Creeks determined that an upgraded machine and pyramid panels would be a possible solution to meet production needs. The testing of a machine eliminated the risk of capital costs to Newmont and provided Derrick the opportunity to obtain additional data."

"Quartz is the second most abundant mineral in the earth’s crust. Not only does quartz have many valuable industrial applications, it is also one of the most concentrated gangue minerals encountered in the processing of other minerals. Minerals such as hematite, apatite, calcite, feldspar, barite, and many more. Numerous applications of industrial minerals are sensitive to the hardness and abrasiveness encountered with quartz minerals, while other applications may lead to processing challenges for the end user. Therefore, process and chemistry optimization must be applied to ensure optimal grade is obtained for these valued industrial minerals. Extensive studies have been conducted in processing various industrial minerals, thus achieving a range of quality specifications, which entailed the application of ArrMaz’s CustoFloat and CustAmine collectors towards the separation of quartz from other minerals. INTRODUCTION Industrial minerals often have the misfortune of the gangue mineral being very similar in surface charge, and coordination properties, to that of the mineral of interest. An example is seen in phosphate beneficiation, when dolomite can be a gangue minerals (Table 1). Therefore, the development of processing reagents are quite complicated. Some minerals, like clays, may be washed away. However, most require the manipulation of the pH, in efforts to fine tune the system to the narrow difference in isoelectric points of the different minerals, as well as the knowledge, and resources that are necessary to exploit the differences to yield and an optimal grade/recovery. In some cases, the application of a depressant may be required, such as the phosphoric acid commonly applied to achieve the optimal balance of grade/recovery for phosphate from a mineral with elevated concentrations of dolomite (Wang, 2016), or the application of hydrofluoric acid to assist in producing feldspar product from a mineral rich in quartz (Heyes, 2012).ArrMaz's CustoFloat and CustAmine product lines have successfully been applied to the processing of industrial minerals for more than 50 years. Applications include, but not limited to phosphate, sand (glass, foundry & high purity quartz), clays (feldspar, kaolin, etc.), and many carbonaceous and sulfate minerals. The successes of these 50 years are largely due to ArrMaz's ability to tailor make the processing chemistries to fit the ever changing and declining mineral feed grade and variations in water quality (Moore, 2015; Moore, 2016). This technical knowledge of mineral processing is strongly complimented by the intimate service programs in place at many of the beneficiation plants."

INTRODUCTION The level of analysis for the selection of extraction practices and equipment for surface mining differs significantly from that found in underground mining. In underground mines, manufacturers establish the operating ranges of the equipment, such as continuous miners, loaders, and boring machines, based upon required clearances. Even in conventional mining, the drilling and blasting operation is usually based upon experience. The selection of extraction methods and equipment for surface mining is more complex. Since the equipment is not as confined as in deep mining, and the topography tends to be highly variable over the limits of the mining property, primary extraction equipment must be sized according to reach and capacity. Further, due to the depositional characteristics of the over- burden, drilling and blasting patterns must be well- designed to provide proper fragmentation. The following sections provide a general outline for the selection of surface excavation practices and equipment. The topics covered include drilling and blasting and the selection of both primary extraction equipment (draglines and stripping shovels) and secondary extraction equipment (bulldozers, scrapers, and front-end loaders). EXCAVATION FUNDAMENTALS Before discussing surface excavation, a few concepts need to be defined. A bank cubic yard of material is equal to one cubic yard as it lies in its natural or undisturbed state. A loose cubic yard is that portion of a bank yard that after being disturbed has expanded to measure one cubic yard. Swell is the volume increase of a material when it is removed from the natural state. Finally, load factor is the percentage decrease in the density of a material from its natural state to a loose state. Table 1 summarizes these concepts for various materials. When the amount of overburden to be removed to meet a predetermined production rate is established, a suitable bucket size for the primary stripping equipment must be calculated. The following equation can be used: NBSIZE = TBC/[(OF) (BF)] (1) where NBSIZE is the actual bucket capacity after considering the swell percentage, the bucket fill factor, and the operating efficiency; TBC is the theoretical bucket capacity (TBC = COB/NTCPM); OF is the operating efficiency; BF is the bucket fill factor; COB is the cubic yards of overburden to be removed; NTCPM is the number of theoretical cycles per month [NTCPM = (SMH) (3600)/(CT)]; SMH is the scheduled monthly hours; and CT is the cycle time in seconds. FRAGMENTATION PROCEDURES Drilling Where the strength of overburden material is such that blasting is required prior to excavation, drilling is conducted before using explosives. Two methods of drilling are found in mining-percussion and rotary. Penetration of overburden by percussion drilling is carried out by successive impacts of the bit into the rock. Emphasis in this section will be placed on rotary drilling, because for surface mining it is the most versatile form of overburden penetration. Rotary drilling is conducted by rotating a rigid string of tubular rods to which a rock-cutting bit is attached. The drilling energy is supplied by rotation as well as thrust and the cutting action consists of abrasion, scraping, spalling, or chipping. The size range for rotary-drilled blastholes is from 4 in. to 15 in., with 9 in. and 12 in. being common sizes. There are two types of bits used for rotary drilling-drag and rolling cutter. Drag bits are applicable in soft to medium-soft shales or their equivalents. Since their effectiveness is dependent upon a successful scraping action, drilling thrust is lower for drag bits than for rolling cutter bits; the opposite is true for torque requirements. The bits are usually fitted with replace- able tungsten-carbide cutters. Rolling cutter bits, though available in a two-cone configuration, are usually of the three-cone style (Table 2). The rolling cones have either large steel teeth for drilling through soft formations or small tungsten-car- bide inserts for drilling through hard formations. Table 3 relates bit size and weight to the strength of the rock. The major advantage of rotary drilling is its rapid drilling rate. This is due to the fact that, unlike percussion drilling, rock penetration is uniform with depth. This article is part of a presentation Strauss made Dec. 3, 1988 at the sixth annual American Mining Hall of Fame (AMHofF) banquet in Tucson, AZ. At the banquet, the Mining Club of the Southwest honored Strauss by naming him the 1988 recipient to the AMHofF. (Industry newswatch, page 6). Introduction In the last two decades, there have been two previous periods of sharply rising copper prices. One was in 1973-74; the other in 1979-80. In both cases, a short period of high copper prices was followed by steep and prolonged periods of low prices. In the language of the market analyst, the high prices were called spikes. Is it likely, then, that three or four years from now the present price of copper will show up as a spike in the charts? There are substantial differences between the current position and the markets of 1973-74 and 1979-80. In 1973-74, US copper prices were subject to government-imposed price ceilings of $0.60 per lb through early December, 1973. These were increased to $0.68 per lb through May, 1974. Meanwhile, mines outside the United States were free of restraint. Rising demand in London pushed the price above $1 per lb in the third quarter of 1973. In early April 1974, it reached a peak of $1.50 a lb. In May of that year, the US ceilings were removed and the domestic price began to rise. What were the causes of this price strength? While ceilings held the domestic price below the world market, domestic consumers acquired all the tonnage offered by US mines. Meanwhile, in the world market, buyers feared prolonged shortages. The Club of Rome had warned that world economic growth would be limited by impending depletion of mineral resources. There was al so concern about a copper cartel that might increase copper prices even more. In early 1974, at a special United Nations session, developing-country spokesmen warned the industrialized world to expect high commodity prices. Also adding to the concerns of copper buyers was the fear that when US wage contracts expired in mid-1974, protracted strikes might ensue. The combined effect of this atmosphere was that consumers accumulated large amounts of copper, far above their normal carry. By midsummer, the position changed radically. While some strikes did occur in the United States, they proved short-lived. The most significant development was a massive economic recession. The energy crisis was causing enormous dislocations in the world economy. Construction activities were sharply reduced and automobile sales plummeted. Public confidence was shaken. Copper sales fell precipitately as consumers decided to draw down their swollen inventories. The price came down too. In April 1974, the London price- as noted-was $1.50 per lb. By the end of the year, it was down to $0.57 per lb. In 1973-74, the copper price rise was fed by fears of shortages, cartels, and strikes. In 1979-80, the market rose on the strength of good demand plus political and military instability. The price rise was also fed by inflationary trends, exemplified by speculation in precious metals. Prior to this second spike in copper prices, the market had been depressed despite economic recovery. Despite reduced US output, copper production in the rest of the world was increasing. Though consumption was rising, surplus stocks reached unprecedented levels. At the end of 1977, the aggregate of stocks at the refineries and in the exchange warehouses was 1.5 Mt (1.67 million st). That was more than three months' shipments at then rates of consumption. In 1978, the statistical position improved. Shipments of refined copper that year were 8% greater than in 1977. The result was reduced visible stocks but -just as was to be the case in 1984-86 - the price remained depressed. In 1979, an even sharper drop in visible stocks occurred as shipments rose by another 4%. This time, though, the price responded. In December 1978, the price in current dollars had been less than $0.70 per lb. By the end of 1979, it was above $1 per lb. And in the first quarter of 1980, it averaged more than $1.20 per lb. Military and political developments were a factor. The hostage crisis in Iran was followed by the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. To many, it appeared that war might result if the Soviets pushed on into Pakistan. At the same time, speculation drove gold and silver prices to incredible levels. As silver prices rose above $40 per oz), copper above $1 per lb did not seem unreasonable. Then, in March 1980, the precious metals price boom collapsed. Copper prices also retreated, though not as much. In February 1980, the copperprice averaged $1.32 per lb. By December, it had dropped to $0.85 per lb. In 1981 and 1982, the decline continued. The present copper situation Why is the current situation different from these two previous episodes of high prices? First of all, today's inventories are far lower than they were in either 1974 or 1980, when the price declines began. The stocks at refineries and in exchange warehouses are substantially less than they were then. More significantly, consumers today have very limited holdings compared with stocks they carried in 1974 and 1980. Even if faced with a downturn in their own business, copper consumers will not be able to stay out of the market. To the extent they have any business at all, they will have to buy copper. And on the supply side, there is also a significant difference. The year 1988 has been unusual. US production is up sharply, responding to higher prices. But production is little changed in the rest of the Free World. Indeed, several of the major producing countries have mined less copper this year than in 1987 despite the prices increases. Peru has had labor problems that have cut its output. Zambia and Zaire suffer from shortages of expatriate technicians, not to mention spare parts. They also suffer from the failure to maintain equipment or perform adequate development. In Chile, the two largest mines, Chuquicamata and El Teniente, have not met their production targets. Chuquicamata is struggling with high arsenic content in its ore. And, in late 1987, severe rockbursts hampered operations at El Teniente. In addition, depletion of some mines in Australia and South Africa has offset rising output at other properties. Indeed, when final mine output figures for 1988 become available, it may well be

"The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRDGC) owns and operates the Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) system which was adopted in 1972. TARP is a network of 110 miles of deep tunnels and ultimately 3 large reservoirs to combat waterway pollution and flooding within a 350 square mile area served by combined sewers. The original TARP concept included additional tunnels to convey CSOs from the largest storms to the reservoirs. With the initial TARP tunnels complete and the reservoirs nearing completion, MWRDGC commissioned hydraulic and hydrologic modeling studies to analyze the benefits of additional conveyance tunnels. These updated studies optimized the configuration of additional tunnels considering integration with potential future local sewer system upgrades. The alternatives considered several routes of 25, 30, and 35 foot diameter tunnels, ranging from 10 to 18 miles. Alternatives were analyzed based on projected reductions to basement flooding compared to the relative costs. TUNNEL AND RESERVOIR PLAN After World War II the Chicagoland area underwent rapid growth and development. With the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago's (MWRDGC) service area becoming increasingly impervious, the flat Chicago landscape was increasingly at risk of significant flooding. In the mid and late 1950's, Chicago experienced multiple extreme storm events that had significant impacts on the city and generated the momentum necessary to initiate what would ultimately become one of the world's largest civil works undertakings. In 1957 a Flood Control Coordinating Committee was formed, consisting of representatives of the MWRDGC, Illinois Department of Public Works, Cook County, and the city of Chicago, to review various plans and develop recommendations for a course of action. With more than 50 alternative concepts being identified, the Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP), which itself is a composite of various alternatives, was adopted the by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRDGC) in 1972. The need to adopt a long term plan was further influenced by the Clean Water Act, which was enacted only 8 days prior."

Passive seismic monitoring is a useful tool for measuring wave propagation in rock mass in deep underground mining. About 20000 mining ? induced seismic events of a hard rock mine, are identified and investigated. The travel times of source-receiver pairs allow us to demonstrate temporal change in velocity. It was found that the average P wave velocity is about 6000 m/s in the mining regions. Velocity investigations on the data during about three months around the main shocks show a significant decrease of the average seismic wave velocity after the main shocks. The sudden drop of average velocity change after the main shocks implies the creation of new fractures in the rock mass due to the main shocks. Afterward, the average velocity increased to a normal level after a time duration of several days. A reasonable explanation for the post seismic velocity increase is that opened cracks begin to close due to crack healing.

Silver contained in zinc calcines undergoes several phase changes as it proceeds through the leaching circuit of a roast-leach-electrowin zinc plant. In the present study, the flotation response of silver from leach residues prepared under a variety of carefully controlled operating conditions in the pilot plant has been examined. Flotation of neutral leach residue is shown to be technically viable and to merit consideration for those plants without a high acid leach circuit, but having significant silver values in the feed. Residue leach conditions must be kept slightly acidic to promote the formation of Ag2S, (Ag, CU)2S and Ag2S rims on residual unroasted sphalerite, while simultaneously avoiding the hydrolysis of soluble iron which depresses silver recovery and grade. Factors to be considered during integration of a flotation process into an electrolytic zinc plant are discussed.

Wheel loaders are currently being used in many mining applications for a variety of reasons. While they sometimes provide the lowest loading cost, a primary advantage of the wheel loader versus other loading systems is the increased versatility and mobility inherent in a wheeled vehicle. The advent of large wheel loaders with much greater digging capability enhanced wheel loader usage in severe loading applications. To match these severe conditions, machines offered today were designed to work in these rocky conditions. Soon after the introduction of large wheel loaders into rocky conditions, however, it became apparent to many users that tire costs could at times account for up to 50% of total hourly operating costs on large wheel loaders. In some applications, tire costs alone pushed wheel loader economics beyond the economic feasibility for these jobs, prohibiting their use. In an effort to combat high tire costs, several attempts have been made to put fast moving steel around the tires to provide a strong interface between vehicle and ground. Some earlier attempts involved wrapping tracks around tires. Mechanical difficulties with these systems limited their customer acceptance. Subsequently, the development of protective tire chains came into favor. While tire chains offered added protection to the tires, the cost and maintenance of the chains remains a problem in 1972, the Dystred arrangement was announced for usage on a 6 cu yd wheel loader from Caterpillar Tractor Co. (See Figure 1). The Dystred offered the advantages of greatly increased tread life over conventional tires, as well as resistance to tread puncture in most situations. The arrangement basically employed a track system similar to that used on track type loaders. Pin and bushing wear often caused high hourly operating costs and excessive machine downtime. In addition, the connection of shoes through the use of links, pins, and bushings forced a limitation on too speed of the vehicle.

Commercial quality kaolin deposits occur in fluvial sediments in both central-eastern Georgia and in the eastern Amazon River area of Brazil. Distinctive coarse and fine particle size kaolin deposits are present in both areas; they have many remarkable similarities for mineral deposits occurring at such wide geographic separation. Industrial, mineralogical, crystalline, and chemical resemblance of the coarse and fine kaolin deposits from the two areas will be described in detail. Knowledge of similarities of the Brazilian clays to those which have dominated world production in Georgia will help to develop superior quality kaolin products for world use in paper, paint, plastic, ceramic, and other applications.

Rock strata, natural and mining-induced stresses, and structural features can combine to create dangerous instabilities in or around longwall panels. Rock noises and properties variations associated with local stress systems can be used to characterize developing instabilities. Through a learning process at a particular mine, guidelines can be developed to allow the determination of relative risk and timing of a potentially disastrous instability. Once a dangerous instability has been identified, operational modifications can be employed to get through the instability, or active measures such as destressing can be used to mitigate the instability. This paper will discuss how an integrated monitoring system and associated data processing can be used to develop a hazard prediction capability for a longwall mine.

Land subsidence had been observed in recent years throughout the Southwest. Particular examples of this phenomenon that have gained wide publicity axe in the Long Beach and Central Valley areas of California and, the Houston area of Texas. Less well known is the fact that the land surface Is subsiding in many parts of Arizona, including the Phoenix area. The causes of this problem vary from place to place, as do also the rates of subsidence. In Houston it has been related to pumping water from artesian aquifers; in Long Beach to the development of oil fields; and in the Central Valley to both the lowering of artesian pressures in deep aquifers and the wetting of poorly consolidated surficial deposits. The mechanism by which subsidence occurs in southern Arizona, even though it can be correlated with the continued lowering of ground water levels, is not as apparent as in these other cases. It is the purpose of this paper to examine both the causes and affects of land subsidence in southern and central Arizona.

"R.E. Janes Gravel Co. is an aggregates producer is located along a paleo-channel of the Ogallala formation (locally known as the Slaton Channel) approximately 48.3 km (30 miles) southeast of Lubbock, TX. In an attempt to beneficiate the 25.4-mm (1-in.) concrete aggregate product, a log washer was installed in the processing line to liberate and remove fines (clay) from the finished product. The introduction of this extra cleaning step increased fines in the finished product, exacerbating the original problem. Several other processing options were investigated before a geological analysis was undertaken to try and define the lithology of the formation and formation characteristics in an attempt to alleviate this problem.Initial assessmentsThe mined resources are mid-Miocene to early Pliocene (16-4 mya) in age and is the eastern exposure of the Ogallala formation of the Southern High Plains escarpment. The Ogallala formation consists of coarse-grained alluvial sediments in paleovalley channel ways from the Rocky Mountains with fine Aeolian and paleosol deposition on the uplands across the High Plains region of the United States. Locally, these Rocky Mountain sediments from New Mexico were transported and deposited in a paleochannel that is approximately 0.805 km (0.5 miles) wide and 15.25 to 18.3 m (50 to 60 ft) in depth. As this channel cut across the Southern High Plains it eroded local rock sources of Late Cretaceous limestones and Triassic sandstones and mudstones incorporating them into the younger Ogallala depositional sequence.Depositional historyThe channel currently being mined is a nontypical Ogallala deposit. The Ogallala in the panhandle of Texas is divided into two units, the Couch and the Bridwell. The Couch is the older of the two and exhibits alluvial sedimentation of thicker and larger gravel (up to 76.2 mm or 3 in.) deposits fining upward to Aeolian sedimentation and thick friable caliche deposits. The Bridwell overlies the Couch and is characterized by alluvial sedimentation, a distinctive red tint and smaller gravel components (typically no larger than 25.4 mm or 1 in.) fining upward to Aeolian sedimentation and thick, well-indurated caliche cap. The Slaton Channel divides these two units and shares lithologic components of both, yet is lithologically distinct due to its Cretaceous Age limestone gravels that can be < 3.66 m (12 ft) in size. Caliche/calcrete is a calcareous (CaCO3) deposit that forms in the B horizon of soils as a rain water leachate of CaCO3 from the upper A horizon."

Artesian pressures of unusual magnitude occur in the deeper aquifer units beneath a considerable part of southeastern North Carolina and extend into South Carolina. The high pressures were first observed in 1968 in wells near Wilmington that were drilled to "basement" rock and which were screened between depths of about 260 to 300 m (meters). The pressure was recognized by Peek and Heath1 as an anomalous geo-pressure and unrelated to recharge conditions in the region. Since 1973, much new information has been obtained on hydro-geologic conditions in the area and a preliminary report on the deep artesian pressures was published in 1975.2 Most of the basic information has been obtained from groundwater research stations constructed by the Groundwater Section of the North Carolina Department of Natural and Economic Resources as a part of Ground-water studies in the Coastal Plain Region. These stations consist of an exploratory well drilled to basement rock with wells completed in each principal aquifer unit to provide data on aquifer characterestics, water levels and water quality.

The mine fire at Wilberg Mine in 1984 reached the surface resulting in the failure of the vertical ledge forming the roof and entrance for three main intake portals. The fallen material was covered with a concrete cap to seal the air from the mine. As the mine was recovered and ventilation pressure was placed on seals on the perimeter of the fire area, the concrete capped rubble proved ineffective. Due to the steep and rugged terrain and the inaccessibility to the portals from underground, horizontal holes were drilled into the portal entries and three seals were placed remotely. At the kernel of the subject is due diligence in major decision-making, that is, where major money amounts and a large corporate commitment are at stake. The "due diligence" means how carefully we do our homework before making the decision. The homework or feasibility study addresses different parts of the decision. Design of the Bajo de la Alumbrera Project started in June 1995 and concentrate production commenced early in the Third Quarter of 1997. The project is situated in North-Western Argentina and is being developed by Minera Alumbrera Limited which is owned by MIM Holdings Limited of Australia (50%), North Limited of Australia (25%) and Rio Algom Limited of Canada (25%). This paper outlines the key features that were incorporated in the design from both process and plant layout perspectives. It explains the background of flowsheet and equipment selection for the plant. A feature of the flowsheet is that it incorporates gravity gold circuits in both primary and regrind circuits for recovery of gold to dore as well as in the copper concentrate product.

Aggregate is an essential input to every economy, so governments need to ensure a sustainable supply of these resources through planning. There is also a need to shift from a linear economy to a more circular one, in which wastes are recycled rather than landfilled, so as to increase eco-efficiency. The purpose of the Sustainable Aggregates Planning in South East Europe (SNAP-SEE, SEE/D/0167/2.4/X) project is to develop a Toolbox for Aggregates Planning to assist governments and stakeholders in national, regional, primary and secondary, aggregates planning in southeast European countries. The Toolbox comprises documents on stakeholder consultation, data and analysis methodologies, a vision of best practices in aggregates planning and how to build an aggregates plan. The Toolbox will also support ongoing efforts to enhance minerals policy in the European Union (EU) as called for by the European Innovation Partnership on Raw Materials. Industrialized and developing nations see long-term and continued economic growth as essential to the well-being

Technology to enhance safety during mine hoisting has been developed by researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Assessment of current hoisting technology suggests that monitoring conveyance position and load directly from the skip or cage top offers several significant safety advantages. Wireless data transmission schemes and a package consisting of sensors, batteries, and a charger mounted on the wire rope and skip have been developed. A state-of-the-art automated hoisting test facility was constructed to test the concept in a controlled laboratory setting. Field tests in a full-size shaft are underway.
