"The Ninetyeast Ridge (NER) extends roughly N-S as a topographic feature for 5000 km, from 31° south to 10° north (Fig. 1) where it becomes buried beneath the Bengal Fan at its northern end. These two geographic characteristics make the NER an ideal natural laboratory for determining the influence of latitude and terrestrial input to ferromanganese (Fe-Mn) crust formation and composition. In addition to study of geographic controls on crust composition, the NER is the largest feature in the Indian Ocean that may host crusts of economic interest.Crusts were collected from 9 of 33 dredge sites from 1.4° north to 26° south latitudes during the 2007 R.V. Roger Revelle Knox06 cruise. Nineteen samples were analyzed for 69 elements each. Nine bulk crusts and 10 layers from four crusts were analyzed. Three of the crusts sub-sampled for layers did not have the bulk crust analyzed and the weighted means for those layers were calculated to obtain bulk compositions. One sample was left out of the statistical analyses because it is phosphatized and chemically quite different from the other samples (Table 1).In order to determine changes in composition with latitude, Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients were calculated for the chemical dataset and latitude of dredge sites, as well as water depth. At the 95-99% confidence level, the following elements increase in crusts moving north along the NER: Mg, Ti, S, Cd, Ni, Tl, Mn, Ba, Co, Cu, In, Li, and Zn; and the following elements decrease northward: Fe, Fe/Mn, P, As, Sc, the rare earth elements plus yttrium (REY), Bi, Ge, and Pb. These correlations indicate that the iron oxyhydroxide component and its associated elements are more prevalent to the south, and the manganese-oxide phase and associated elements increase toward the north end of the NER. This change occurs between dredges D20 and D14 (Fig. 1), with crusts from D20 and south having Fe/Mn !1.0 and those north of D20 ""1.2, with the exception of the phosphatized crust. Crust composition also changes with water depth: Th, Ge, Pb, and the middle rare earth elements (REEs) increase with increasing water depth. Thorium commonly increases in deeper water crusts, which explains the higher Th concentrations in Atlantic and Indian ocean crusts in general compared with Pacific crusts (Fig. 2 and Hein et al., 2012), including the samples analyzed here with a mean water depth of 3584 m. However, water depth does not explain the latitudinal changes because the mean water depths of samples along the northern and southern segments of the NER are roughly comparable. Surprisingly, Si and Al, representing the aluminosilicate/detrital phase, do not correlate with latitude; that is as the ridge approaches and is buried by the Bengal Fan the Si and Al contents do not increase. However, overall, Si and Al have higher concentrations in NER crusts than in central Pacific crusts. Ba can be used as a proxy for primary productivity and statistically does increase to the north along the ridge in the direction of the equatorial zone of high biological productivity. Correlations of Mg, Li, and Zn with latitude may also reflect increased primary productivity at lower latitudes."

The current study is part of the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) on-going subsidence research program. The long-term objective of the DOE program is to develop analytical methods of subsidence prediction applicable over a broad range of geologic and mining conditions encountered in the United States. The DOE currently has several contracts in progress to develop a sound data base that can be used in the development of predictive models. Dames & Moore is currently under contract to the DOE to collect and analyze detailed subsidence and hydrologic data from a coal mine employing longwall mining methods in the Eastern Coal Province. Work under Contract No. DE-AC22-80PC 30335 began in October of 1980 and will continue through September of 1984. This paper summarizes the work that has been completed through September of 1981 and presents the results that have been achieved during this period. Technical difficulties encountered during both the installation and monitoring phases are discussed, and recommendations for future work are presented.

This paper was developed as part of an effort by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to identify risk factors associated with bumps in the prevention of fatalities and accidents in highly stressed, bump-prone ground conditions. Changes of failure mechanism with increasing confinement, from extensional- to shear-dominated failure, are widely observed in the rupture of intact specimens at the laboratory scale and in rock masses. In the previous analysis conducted in 2018, both unconfined and triaxial compressive tests were conducted to investigate the strength characteristics of some specimens of a Utah coal, including the spalling limits, the ratio of apparent unconfined compressive strength (AUCS) to unconfined compressive strength (UCS), the damage characteristics, and the post-yield dilatancy. These mechanical characteristics were found to be strongly anisotropic as a function of the orientation of the cleats relative to the loading direction.

Inn mining communities throughout the western United States, cows have always been part of the landscape as they graze on surrounding rangelands. Until recently, mining companies regarded these animals as something to be kept off their properties — especially any freshly reclaimed lands. During the last few years, though, this situation has begun to change. Today, cattle can be seen in a handful of mine settings, moving up and down the slopes of mine tailings and waste rock. These animals are being used by several companies to do some of the reclamation work once performed by large earth-moving equipment, mechanical spreaders, rippers and seed drillers. This is because cows can contour slopes more naturally and produce and spread soil nutrients in ways that tractors and ripping machines cannot.

INTRODUCTION Perhaps no other area reflects the art as well as the science of mining-engineering design quite as obviously as strata control. This is due to the fact that the design of mining structures is difficult because rock rarely behaves as a homogeneous medium. Further, the original state of stress and the mechanical proper- ties of the in situ rock are somewhat difficult to deter- mine. However, those aspects that are hard to treat mathematically can and have been successfully approached by model studies and in situ measurements. This chapter will review the fundamentals of strata- control design and will provide examples of applications to typical problems. STRESSES AROUND MINE OPENINGS A close examination of Fig. 1 reveals that, prior to mining, stresses exerted in the overburden can be in both the horizontal and vertical directions. In the example problems of Chapter 1, it was shown that the maximum compressive stress (uv) at any depth (D) below the surface can be approximated as follows: [ ] Further, the lateral stress (oh) is related to the maxi- mum compressive stress by utilizing Poisson's ratio (µ): [ ] As soon as a heading is driven, such as the one in the coal seam shown in Fig. 2, the stresses shift to the sides, or abutments, of the opening. Clearly, these compressive stresses around the opening exceed the pre-mining conditions. The problem of designing an underground opening, therefore, is to determine the maximum stresses and to note if they exceed the ultimate strength of the rock. Table 1 lists several rocks with their corresponding strengths. Figs. 3 to 5 depict the boundary stress concentrations around circular, ovaloidal, and rectangular openings. M is the ratio of the horizontal stress to the vertical stress, or as defined above, p/(l-p). This text will concentrate on the state of stress represented by M = 0.33, which corresponds to the condition of no lateral deformation in a rock having a Poisson's ratio of 0.25. For an ovaloid with an opening width-to-height ratio of 2.0 (Fig. 4), the boundary stress concentrations are at their maximum values at the comers of the opening, with values in excess of 3.0. A large-diameter road tunnel will cross beneath the strait in Istanbul and expand the infrastructure bottleneck between Europe and Asia. The technical planning of the tunneling operations poses complex challenges. Therefore, the construction consortium ordered a specially adapted tunnel boring machine (TBM) from Herrenknecht. The 13.6-m (44.6-ft) machine, a Mixshield, was completed in early July 2013 in Schwanau, Germany. To get from the European to the Asian side of Istanbul, people and goods have to cross the Bosporus Straits. So far, two road bridges as well as ferries provide the only transport link between the two parts of the city and the two continents. The tense traffic situation for the nearly 14 million residents of the city and for international transit traffic should be improved considerably thanks to the construction of a new road tunnel under the Bosporus. ?The project is certainly one of the most challenging tunneling operations currently being addressed in the world,? said Herrenknecht project manager Georg Schleer. The route of the ?Istanbul Strait Road Tube Crossing Project? runs around 100 m (330 ft) below sea level at its deepest point. The interior diameter of the tunnel will be 12 m (40 ft) so that two lanes in each direction can be accommodated. They will extend one above the other on two levels. 3.34 km (2.1 miles) of the tunnel with a total length of 5.4 km (3.3 miles) are being created by a 13.6-m- (44.6-ft-) diameter Herrenknecht TBM that will begin its underground mission from a launch shaft on the Asian side.

Distinct trends in grinding mill technology have emerged in recent years. In an effort to optimize overall mill performance for the needs of the End User, broad measures of logistical speed, process flexibility, operational risk, and overall costs now exert greater influence on the specification of grinding equipment. As a result, innovative alternatives to conventional grinding mill structures, supports, drives, feed, and discharge configurations are now being offered and selected with greater frequency. This paper investigates these trends in grinding mill technology, utilizing optimization and decision-theory techniques. In particular, the paper considers how specific advances in process design, product engineering, manufacturing techniques, and mining operations continue to relax technological constraints, enabling further mill innovation. In this context, a methodology is presented, illustrating how proper selection and specification of grinding mill components and configuration can target an optimization of the four End-User performance measures listed above.

A series of gas inrush events occurred during development at Grosvenor mine resulting in exposure to elevated levels of methane at the production face. A total of 22 gas inrush events occurred releasing between 15 and 130 m3 of methane during each event. The presence of an undrained seam in the immediate floor, geotechnical characteristics of the floor, and the stress environment all contributed to these dynamic floor events, while the geological characteristics of the seam below, such as the seam thickness and ash content of 75%, prevented effective pre-drainage. However, events only occurred in headings mined parallel to the principal horizontal stress direction. In cut-throughs (C/Ts) perpendicular to the principal stress direction, no events occurred, and higher methane levels were observed at the production face.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION Alignment The Strenger Tunnel forms part of the S16 four-lane expressway between Landeckand Bludenz. The construction of this important East-West connection started in 1973with the Arlberg Road Tunnel as its key constituent. Beginning in 1992, solutions for the section between Pians and Flirsch were investigated. Efforts to conserve nature and to avoid potential avalanche and landslide areas led to a solution detouring the villages in the Stanz valley. The starting points were predetermind by the intersections at Pians in the East and at Flirsch in the West. As a result of the expected traffic load and the comparatively high gradient of 2.9%, both one-way, two-lane tubes were constructed at once. The north tube is 5.851 m long, the south tube 5.775 m, see Figure 1. To accommodate larger double-stack rail cars through a tunnel, the existing active tracks were to be lowered. The tunnel is an elliptical, horseshoe-shape with concrete base support, removal of which would jeopardize the tunnel integrity, particularly since the soils beneath part of the tunnel floor included soft, saturated silt overlying rock. Grouted bar anchors combined with a SuperJet soilcrete strut replaced the existing support in situ prior to floor lowering. Close cooperation and detailed timely engineering support provided a quality project. Project design and construction, ground improvement methods, and the performance of the work are described.

The Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL) is the most significant railway infrastructure development project in the United Kingdom since the construction of the Channel Tunnel between France and England. The key element of this project is the 2-mile-long(3.2-km) North Downs Tunnel, which will be the largest and deepest twin-track railway tunnel ever constructed in the United Kingdom. This paper describes the contractual agreement, the design and construction (excavation and lining) of a twin-track rail tunnel with a 166-m 2 face excavated through chalk using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM). The importance of collaborating with a tunnel contractor/designer who not only is expert in the New Austrian Tunnelling Method, but who was also responsible for the design and installation of the primary lining, will be highlighted in this paper. This paper will also deal with the benefits of partnering in tunnel design and construction, as well as the resultant added values of mechanizing conventional tunnelling methods (Value Engineering).

The Allen Park Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) Tunnel and relief sewer project, located in the city of Allen Park, MI, is a long-term corrective action designed to bring Sanitary District One?s sanitary system into compliance with its 2005 consent order and service contract with the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD). The $20 million project is intended to reduce Allen Park?s wet weather discharges to DWSD, reduce bypass pumping to the Ecorse Creek and limit the future risk of basement flooding by providing storage during wet weather events and eliminating hydraulic bottlenecks in the sanitary sewer system.

Thee Brightwater water treatment facilities, currently scheduled to be completed in 2010 and begin operating in 2011, will serve the northern part of King County, WA. The facility includes a new treatment plant and extensive conveyance system consisting of more than 21 km (13 miles) of influent and effluent conveyance tunnels and five portals. The majority of the conveyance system tunnels are mined by tunnel boring machines (TBM) and microtunnel boring machines (MTBM). Tunnel and portal construction is divided into three main contracts. The Ballinger Way receiving portal, constructed under the central tunnel contract, is the terminus for the BT-3 leg of the central contract and the BT-4 terminus of the west contract. The shaft has a 7.3-m (24-ft) finished inside diameter (ID) to accommodate removal of the central project TBM and the west contract TBM and extends to a depth of 66 m (216 ft) below grade through a complex and challenging soil profile characterized by multiple ground water tables. Vinci Grand Projects/Parsons/Frontier-Kemper Constructors (VCFK) was the joint venture team for the Ballinger Way portal. Frontier-Kemper was responsible for the shaft sinking. VCFK evaluated either slurry wall techniques or ground freezing for earth support during excavation of the portal and liner installation. The selection process took into account the vertical depth, cost, past practice, geology, water tables and a 9-m- (30-ft-) thick zone of contaminated soil at the top of the shaft. Ground freezing, which would also act as a hydraulic barrier, was deemed the better option for this project. The contract was awarded to New Jersey-based geotechnical contractor Moretrench. Typically, frozen walls, by design, key into an underlying cutoff. At the Ballinger Way portal, however, the [ ] freeze bottomed out in a substantially thick stratum consisting of predominantly clay, but with some inclusions of permeable soil that indicated significant ground water pressures. To ensure stable conditions at the bottom of the shaft, Moretrench, which also specializes in dewatering, designed and installed a perimeter array of deep wells to temporarily depressurize the permeable soils. An improved experimental procedure to measure contact angle has been consolidated with coal surface preparation involving polishing with abrasive paper, alumina powder, and a cloth, followed by ultrasonic and mechanical cleaning. Specifically, the captive-bubble measuring technique has been compared with the sessile-drop technique and the former has been recommended for the examination of the hydrophobic properties of coal surfaces. Results of the research program, which is currently under way, on the examination of the effect of the nature, amount, size, and distribution of mineral inclusions in coal, on its wettability are briefly reviewed.

In order to address the difficulty of accurate segmentation of froth images of different sizes, a method of froth image segmentation based on highlight correction and parameter adaptation is proposed. First, a machine vision system on a single-cell flotation machine is built to collect froth images. Homomorphic filtering is used to improve the uneven brightness and shadow of the images. Fuzzy c-means (FCM) clustering is then utilized to classify similar highlights that belong to the same froth. After Otsu threshold segmentation, a parameter-adaptive morphological operation is used to extract the marker points and edge bands and correct the froth edges in the original image. Finally, the modified image is filtered by morphological reconstruction, and the highlight mark is used as the local minimum point for watershed segmentation. Three sizes of froth images are segmented in comparative experiments. The results show that the proposed method is suitable for the segmentation of froth images of different sizes. The position of the extracted segmentation line is close to reality, with average over-segmentation and under-segmentation rates for froth images of 2.6% and 6.8%, respectively. The froth image segmentation performance is stronger than that of the other methods examined.

A hydrogeologic characterization and impact analysis was performed for a proposed quarry at the Hitch Rack Ranch located in the Little Turkey Creek watershed southwest of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Continuous multiple channel tubing, nested piezometers, stream flow measurements, and mapping of known seeps were used to define the three-dimensional potentiometric distribution and areas of groundwater recharge and discharge. Water balance considerations, mass balance calculations, and potentiometric response to earth tides and barometric fluctuations confirmed that the granite fracture system in the ridge area of the proposed quarry has an extremely low bulk hydraulic conductivity resulting in minimal groundwater discharge to sustain the baseflow of Little Turkey Creek. The Little Turkey Creek valley forms the major conduit for groundwater flow exiting from the upper part of watershed underlain by granite. This conclusion has significant implications with respect to mine planning to minimize projected impacts to the hydrologic system and preserve this recharge component to downgradient Denver Basin sedimentary deposits.

During 1996 and 1997, Oregon experienced flooding on a scale not seen in many years. Some gravel pits located near rivers experienced erosion. In several cases, breaches occurred between the gravel pit and the river. Initial evaluation of several sites that experienced these breaches showed that impacts to the river system were complex and varied significantly from site to site. The impacts to the adjacent river system may be viewed as positive and negative. Several flood-plain-mining sites in Oregon located in areas of historic river flow reverted to active riverbeds. In many cases, state and federal fisheries biologists and university researchers saw the resulting increase in channel complexity and habitat as favorable. The Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries —Mined Land Reclamation Program (DOGAMI-MLR) is studying the effects to the off-channel areas that resulted from the 1996 floods. More data is needed to make sound flood-plain decisions regarding mining.

From a vast army of workers to gargantuan machines to immense volumes of material being moved, almost everything about the Port of Miami Tunnel (POMT) project points to tunneling on a massive scale. Almost.The star of this underground and underwater show is a Herrenknecht tunnel boring machine (TBM,) nicknamed ?Harriet? by a local Girl Scout troop. With her 12.9-m- (42.3-ft-) diameter cutting head and a total length of 139 m (457 ft), Harriet is boring through thousands of cubic meters of clay, dirt and sand, which is often mixed with coral and other materials, to create two 1,280-m (4,200-ft) traf?c tunnels connecting Watson Island and the Port of Miami (Dodge Island) beneath Biscayne Bay, FL. But in the midst of all of the oversized equipment and machines, a strong contender for the best supporting nod goes to a relatively tiny machine: the Brokk 400. Bouygues Civil Works Florida crews are using the compact, remote-controlled and electric-powered machine to excavate five cross passages between the twin traffic tunnels. The pas-sages will be essential to the safety of people who drive their vehicles under the bay every day.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is constructing a new tunneled route under Seattle to replace the existing State Route 99, Alaskan Way Viaduct (AWV), which follows the historic waterfront for several miles. The viaduct separates the businesses that rely upon the tourist trade from the down-town area. The reconnection of the city to the waterfront areas will occur following the completion of the SR99 Re-placement program that replaces the aging structure that was severely impacted by the 2001 Nisqually earthquake, with a state-of-the-art, twin-deck highway with a world record-breaking 17.4-m (57.3-ft) bored tunnel. Constructed in the 1950s, the double-tiered viaduct is nearly 3.2 km (2 miles) long and runs parallel to city?s waterfront. The viaduct, which is partially supported by the seawall, is a vital local and regional transportation link and carries about 110,000 vehicles each day. The seawall, built from concrete and timber in the 1930s, extends along Seattle?s waterfront and supports the soil behind it. Studies in the 1990s showed that the viaduct was nearing the end of its useful life, apparent by its exposed rebar and weakened columns. The 2001 Nisqually earth-quake further damaged the viaduct, forcing WSDOT to temporarily close it for inspection and limited repairs. The viaduct and nearby seawall are vulnerable to an-other earthquake and continue to show signs of age and deterioration. Following a collaborative process, WSDOT developed the following guiding principles to the viaduct replace-ment:
