The widespread and increasing use of electrical power for mechanized power has made a tremendous impact on the coal mining industry. It is probably the single most important factor influencing the productivity of a coal mine. In fact, as a part of a study of 62 coal mines in Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia, plus information that was obtained from other sources, it was possible to show a direct correlation between the rise in the use of electrical power and mine productivity, Figure 1. This increased power demand has not always been achieved through proper planning and a careful evaluation of all design parameters, many of which are not even recognized. The result has been increasing problems in power distribution and utilization establishing the need for scientific studies including considerable underground measurements. Because the cost of power for ton of coal produced is generally a relatively low value, inadequate attention is paid its distribution and utilization. Furthermore, a poor system of records and a lack of adequate measurements add further to a paucity of statistical evidence that would permit a rational analysis of overall power costs. However, the direct cost figure alone is highly deceptive; of much greater value is the indirect costs associated with the use (or misuse) of electrical power underground. Success in highly mechanized mining correlates directly with equipment utilization. Today's machines have tremendous potential capacities but profits are measured in terms of performance and not potential. Thus the reliability of electric motors is an extremely important factor for consideration and the effects of all parameters should be carefully evaluated. Thus while studies are continuing on the evaluation of primary and secondary mine electrical systems with interesting results, this paper will be limited to reporting on the results of a study of a specific motor application.

An Ore bed magnetic liner element is made of permanent ceramic magnets embedded in a rubber molding. (See figure 1) They are difficult and expensive to manufacture correctly. Therefore, the lining for a complete mill is expensive, as high as 400% more than conventional rubber liners. The magnets are not very resistant to impact as they are very brittle. Mills of 12 feet or more can use only I inch balls; mills under 12 feet can use balls of 1-1/2 inches. These liners are therefore used in regrind applications with small balls or in secondary pebble mills. Rubber liners for these applications last a long time, so if life was the only consideration, the pay back for these liners would be longer than the life of the mine. The Ore bed liner and its bed of ball chips or magnetic ore is relatively thin and the surface of this bed has a high coefficient of friction. The liners are made so that opposing poles are situated next to each other and that the mill shell and the bed of ore or ball chips completes the magnetic circuit. (See figure 2) The combinations of these properties results in a very efficient liner. Due to the low profile of this bed, there is no material that is lifted too high, so we have a very compact charge with very high attrition, good for fine grinding. These liners have shown a 10% ball consumption reduction and a 10% lower power draw for the same capacity. Due to the magnetic orientation, the bed is formed in a wave shape along the lines of magnetic force. Tests conducted at a copper mine in the southwest United States have confirmed these findings. In an age where customer service and quality drive today's industry and business, no service or product is exempt from these demands. Industry and business are streamlining everything from people to equipment and today have a heavier reliance on the performance and quality of their assets and equipment, (one of the keys to staying competitive). In the mining process industry, the centrifugal slurry pump is a key piece of equipment that keeps product moving and aids in generating revenue for its owner. The continued improvement and customer success lies in a team effort between the mining industry and the pump manufacturers. We, the pump manufacturers, need to keep improving our designs to further extend the life of our pump with fewer failures and promote to our customers proper maintenance of the pumps to continually keep unexpected failures to a minimum. Strict equipment maintenance, as thoroughly demonstrated by the military, is key to the long life and success of any piece of equipment. In the often harsh duty of the centrifugal slurry pump, maintenance is something that requires "attention to detail". No area of the pump is exempt from attentive maintenance. Here, discussions will focus on the areas of the mechanical drive end, wet end, seals, and extended pump shut down and start up. There has not been a slurry pump designed to maintain or repair itself. So in effect, each pump warrants able bodied maintenance persons to maintain them who continually observe all the rules of safety. Prior to any maintenance discussion or action, the issue of safety should always be addressed. Here, as with everywhere, the same rules apply. Work at a safe pace, note all safety precautions, use associated safety equipment and personal protective attire, observe all tagout and lockout procedures, and most importantly, be aware.

The close area! relationship of Cretaceous or later intrusive porphyries to larger hydrothermal deposits of Pb, Zn, Au, fig, Cu, Mo, Hg,, and U of similar age in the Basin Range Province, was statistically shown in a recent paper (Stringham1) During the past year this study has been expanded to cover p11 of the larger hydrothermal deposits of similar nature occurring in the entire western United States. The sandstone type uranium deposits of the Colorado Plateau and Wyoming have been excluded since considerable controversy exists regarding their origin. The close relationship between intrusives in general and hydrothermal ore deposits has long been-recognized, but the association involving intrusive porphyry only, was suggested in 1954 when Sales concluded that the formation of porphyry may be an intermediate stage of activity between the development of granitoid rock and certain types of copper deposits. However: he applied this concept to only a few copper deposits. The relationship appears to be true also for a great majority of the hydrothermal deposits of the other metals mentioned above of Cretaceous and later age, at least in the western United States. This situation then leads to the conclusion then when exploring for similar types of hydrothermal deposits of the metals considered one may feel reasonably sure that if an intrusive porphyry of considerable size is. not present he may be facing much greater risk of finding an ore body than if a prophyry were presents Since, there are many intrusive porphyritic rocks which do not seem to be associated with hydrothermal deposit, it is believed that some distinct value can come from the recognition of intrusive porphyry which might be barren as well as the intrusive prophyry which might be productive This paper deals with that problem.

The Tek Process can produce masonry products such as bricks, roof or wall tiles, and block from virtually any inorganic waste. In the process the aggregate raw materials, portland cement, water and common chemicals are first mixed together; then mechanically subjected to several thousand pound pressure per square inch. This causes a novel chemical reaction between the cement, chemicals and water; producing the "patented" Tek adhesive binder which holds the aggregate together in a stone-like mix. Simultaneously, the desired product shape is formed. The building modules can have strengths of 8000 p.s.i. (pounds per square inch) with completely sound aggregates utilizing air curing for a period of 28 days. With most aggregates, 3000 p.s.i. is achieved within 24 hours. Eventual strengths usually exceed 5000 p.s.i. with almost any raw material. Water absorption ranges from 5-7.5 percent. Both absorption and strength figures are superior to the most rigid of any and all A.S.T.M. specifications for the highest quality bricks. In most locations, the product (when brick shaped is called Tekbrik) can be produced significantly more economically than can comparable grades of clay or other bricks, be- cause almost any inorganic waste materials or pollutant can be used as a raw material. The process results in a lower manufacturing cost as compared to clay bricks; fuel cost to operate a clay kiln represents a substantial portion of the total cost. Capital expenditure for a Tek plant also is lower due to the large investment in clay kilns. Transportation savings also are important, clay brick factories must be very large because the kilns are uneconomical unless they are large. Most bricks are manufactured at the sites of clay deposits in relatively uninhabited areas. The cost of transportation to the job site represents a considerable percentage of the selling price.

"INTRODUCTION Anadarko Petroleum Corporation (Anadarko) owns a region of oil shale properties acquired as part of the original Union Pacific Land Grant of the 1800’s in southern Wyoming. These holdings are greater than 2 million acres and occur throughout the Green River Formation in southwestern Wyoming. One area was prioritized for further study by Anadarko Minerals called the Kinney Rim in the Washakie Basin due to low environmental impact, proximity to infrastructure, high ore grade, and low mining cost. The area is a low-overburden oil shale resource that can be developed using surface mining methods, processed by conventional surface retort, and placing waste rock disposal back on the bench for a design capacity of 10,000 barrel per day. The purpose of this papers is to present the results of environmental analysis and timeline, the mine plan, and surface ore processing to offer a resource-ready energy source.Mineral rights for the Kinney Rim area are owned by Anadarko, the United States Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the State of Wyoming. Mining of oil shale for this study targets Anadarko owned mineral resources.GEOLOGY The study area is in the Green River and Washakie Basins in western Wyoming. The host geologic member is the Laney Oil Shale. Figure 2 illustrates the Laney shale within a generalized lithologic cross section.OIL SHALE LEASING The proposed Kinney Rim oil shale mining project is located in an area dominated by a 1 square mile checkerboard landownership pattern with every other section typically administered by Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and Anadarko. Surface and mineral ownership is a split estate legal entity. The immediate Kinney Rim mine plan is all on Anadarko sections."

During the past fifteen years considerable progress has been made in the technology of slope design. It is possible to design rational slope angles if suitable data on geology, hydrology, and rock properties are available. It is of course preferable to conduct a full scale slope design study, but there are those situations where a full scale study is not feasible because of time and budget constraints. In this paper we will treat two situations: (1) choosing slope angles for a preliminary feasibility study at the exploration stage; and (2) dealing with a slope failure in an operating pit. In these instances slope angles must often be chosen on the basis of available or readily obtained data. In an exploration program all too often a feasibility study is initiates just a few months prior to the decision deadline to drop the property or to exercise an expensive purchase option. If all that is available at this point are a few cross sections at odd angles showing ore and waste contacts and a dog-earred map of the surface geology there may not be time to collect and organize enough information for design of slope angles. On the other hand if during the drilling program geologic cross sections are constructed and the structural data is presented in tabular form, rational slope angles can be determined within the allotted time. Certain types of data can be collected only at specific times during a project. Two prime examples are logging fracture intensity and collecting samples for rock testing before the core is split. It is particularly disheartening to ask to see the core and to be shown a tattered cardboard box filled with plastic bags of sample pulps.

Twenty-five years ago, when I began my sales life marketing minerals, there was little or no contact between sales people and production people. In those days, it was not uncommon for me, as a salesman, to learn of production problems existing in my company from my customers. Today, in my opinion, any successful mining company must keep production people fully aware of circumstances that effect service to the users of the product. Basically, feldspar is presently consumed by the glass and pottery industries the same as 100 years ago. The consuming public little realizes the origin of so many things they use daily and take for granted. Feldspar is utilized in the glass that contains our Coca-Cola, Pepsi, wines, liqueurs, beer and the assorted gob¬lets from which we drink these lovely brews, the industrial glass upon which all industry depends, the bathroom plumbing fixtures that make life so different from the days of the out-house, the beautiful and durable china we enjoy at mealtime. The electricity we use requires insulators that demand feldspar. In our home ap¬pliances, automobiles, toys and airplanes, we find feldspar. I could go on and on, hopefully soliciting your help in making our taxpaying and non-taxpaying fellow man aware of the burdens he may acquire when unthinking, over-enthusiastic environmentalists foist unnecessary hardships upon the mining industry. Feldspar is marketed primarily sized from 20 mesh to 325 mesh. The glass industry requires feldspar ground 20 mesh to 40 mesh size; the pottery industry requires material from 150 mesh to 325 mesh size. One large glass plant may require up to 100 tons per day and more, whereas a small plant may use less than 5 tons per year. St. Joseph Lead Company has been paying incentive bonuses for well over 40 years. In 1958 almost half of St. Joe's 1,860 employees in Southeast Missouri received some form of incentive bonus in addition to their guaranteed wages. There are very few payroll jobs in St. Joe s Southeast Missouri organization that lend themselves to a reasonably good measurement of production or quality, or both, where an incentive bonus is not paid. The term "Incentive Bonus" is used to differentiate betwen bonuses that are based on quantity or quality of work, and those that are merely additional pay of a standard amount per hour or day because of an employee being temporarily assigned to some unusual task, An employee temporarily assigned to a job where the working conditions make the job performance unusually difficult or where a special skill is used is often given a bonus of some standard amount per hour or shift in addition to his usual rate. This is merely a convenient way of paying something extra without disturbing the normal rate structure. Actually, it is differential pay similar to that almost universally paid for evening and night shift work. Bonuses of that type are not being considered in this paper. The basic reason or theory for paying incentive bonuses 9s to get improved production at lower cost, Unfortunately, it is often difficult, if not impossible, to find a yardstick by which it can be definitely proved that a particular bonus plan is accomplishing its purpose, It becomes, then, a matter of judgment on the part of management personnel as to the value of the bonus plan. The fact that St. Joe Lead Company has continued to pay bonuses for over 40 yews and has increased the number of bonus schedules used attests to a definite belief that they are beneficial to the company's successful operations.

The MSHA Technical Support, Roof Control Division's primary evaluation tool for coal pillar designs is the Analysis of Coal Pillar Stability (ACPS) program. However, ACPS is limited to evaluating interactions between two seams at a time, which is not ideal for complex multiple- seam scenarios. Further, it does not recognize the influence of strata properties in the interburden and cannot be used to evaluate individual pillars. We apply the Rocscience RS2 two-dimensional finite element program as a complement to ACPS. Complex multiple-seam scenarios can be characterized by a modified pillar stability factor where the ACPS single-seam development pillar stability factor is multiplied by the ratio of average single-seam development stress to the stress in the critical pillar at the multiple-seam stage, using the values of o as predicted by RS2. Several series of test examples involving two-seam analyses with isolated remnants, gob-solid boundaries, and high extraction areas of varying width were used to calibrate simulated gob properties such that the ACPS+RS2 method generated results that matched a traditional ACPS Stability Factor to within 13%. As high-extraction areas become wider and deeper, progressively stiffer gob is simulated by increasing the Young's Modulus property in RS2. After achieving calibration with the test series, three examples of complex multiple-seam scenarios were evaluated, using reasonable properties for strata types and thicknesses based on core log data. Resulting modified stability factors are reasonably close to those predicted by ACPS, although affected by units of sandstone in the interburden and gob shadows superimposed on remnant structures. This tends to show that even in complex multiple-seam conditions, applying ACPS to the worst-case interaction should usually result in an acceptable pillar design.

The idea that fragmentation for mineral processing results from some tradeoff between increased drilling and blasting and increased load on the primary crusher is well known. In a previous paper (Lundquist and Konya, 1963) the authors reported on the results of a laboratory scale study which attempted to quantify this tradeoff in energy terms. If we look only at the production of new surface area, blasting is 1700 times as energy efficient as crushing. On an energy cost basis, crushing is 57 times as expensive per unit surface produced as blasting with dynamite and more than 700 times as expensive as blasting with ANFO. The comminution process at an open pit operation starts with the drilling of blast holes and ends after the material has gone through the fine grind circuit. Operators usually break the process into several separate operations and do their cost analysis based on this approach. Often drilling and blasting is considered as one system and crushing and grinding are considered as one or two separate and independent systems. Operators will independently optimize each system. The cost for the drilling and blasting system is obvious in operations which use contract drillers to do the drilling and either contract the blasting to a distributor or do the blasting themselves. The cost of rock breaking in this manner is readily available since the contract driller will supply a monthly drilling cost to the operation and either the distributor who is contracting the blasting or the distributor who is supplying the powder to the blasting operation will also supply a monthly billing. In either case, the costs can easily be seen on a monthly or per ton basis. They are not difficult to compute even when drilling and blasting are done entirely in-house.

Super Cycle future The final topic is mining?s future. The most important questions are ?How much longer is the Super Cycle going to last? What should we expect to see going forward? How will the Super Cycle end?? Three possible scenarios follow. Scenario one: Super Cycle has peaked Kathy Casey-Kirschling is officially the first Baby Boomer. She was born Jan. 1st, 1946. If you google ?first baby boomer,? she?s the one that shows up. A Baby Boomer is anybody born between 1946 and 1964. In the United States, it represents about a quarter of the population ? approximately 76 million people. The Baby Boomer generation is going to change the economics of the world because there are so many in the generation. A review of spending patterns indicates that the largest amount of discretionary spending occurs between the ages of 49 and 52. Retired people tend to live on fixed incomes so they have less discretionary income. They also tend to downsize their house, which may contribute to the housing glut and the need for a lot less metal. Therefore, the upcoming retirement of the Baby Boomer generation could result in a massive shift in economic spending resulting in the peaking of the Super Cycle. Figure 1 is an index graph from the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX). The index has recently peaked. A lot of people see that as a sign that bad things coming our way. A careful review of different commodity prices also suggest that the peak has occurred and it does not seem to matter which commodity prices are considered. Copper prices have seen a peak as have nickel prices. Nickel and molybdenum displayed the same trend with a peak in 2005 as did zinc. Uranium, which has single-handedly tried to behave like the dot com craze, has also peaked.

Introduction Despite perennial economic turbulence, Argentina continues to push ahead with efforts to develop its fledgling hardrock mining industry. The country lacks the infrastructure and mining history of neighboring Chile, but contains vast areas of great resource potential. The eastern slope of the Andean Cordillera in west-northwest Argentina is a relatively little-explored region offering geology highly conducive to the occurrence of base and precious metals deposits. Past exploration has concentrated on locating and evaluating porphyry copper-molybdenum (Cu-Mo) type occurrences. Comparatively little attention has been given to precious metals potential. An interesting and important group of base and precious metals prospects in northwestern Argentina occurs within and adjacent to the Upper Miocene Farallon Negro volcanic complex in Catamarca province. The volcanic complex contains numerous base and precious metals vein occurrences, high gold porphyry copper prospects, and possible disseminated gold targets that have attracted relatively minor attention in the past. Various geologic aspects of the region have been reported by several workers (Llambias, 1970, 1972; Caelles et al, 1971; and Sillitoe, 1973). Regional geology The Farallon Negro volcanic complex is located within the Sierras Pampeanas morphostructural province about 200 km (125 miles) east of the main Andean Cordillera (Fig. 1). The Sierras Pampeanas is characterized by north-south-trending basin and range topography that developed during the Miocene and Pliocene. Uplifted blocks are composed mainly of lower Paleozoic metasediments and granitoid plutonic rocks unconformably overlain by Tertiary redbeds and minor carbonates. A consistent landward migration of volcanic and intrusive ac¬tivity occurred in this region of the Andes from the early Mesozoic through the mid-Tertiary. One of the major problems encountered with recirculatory breathing apparatus presently used by mine rescue teams is that the inspired air becomes uncomfortably, and often dangerously, hot. This is also true with self-rescuers. It is well known that man can tolerate very high dry-bulb temperatures if the wet-bulb temperature is low, but not vice- versa. The maximum tolerable, wet-bulb temperature is about 42 °C (108 °F). A continuously inhaled wet-bulb temperature above this value can cause irreversible damage to the throat and lung tissue, and wet-bulb temperatures close to it cause extreme discomfort (1) and seriously retard the capability of the man to perform useful work. A theoretical analysis, combined with experimental results, has shown that it is the carbon dioxide absorbent that is the major cause of high wet-bulb temperatures of the inspired air in the Siebe Gorman Proto 4, and in the Draeger BG 174 apparatus, both of which are used by rescue teams on South African mines (2). In the Proto 4 apparatus, the absorbent for the carbon dioxide is soda lime (calcium hydroxide). The German Draeger BG 174 also uses this absorbent but under arduous conditions such as in hot environments (50 °C, 122 °F), the use of an alkali absorbent cartridge is recommended which consists mainly of caustic soda (sodium hydroxide). Lithium hydroxide is used in some apparatus in the United States. It is clear that different absorbents will produce different quantities of heat and moisture for a given rate of absorption of carbon dioxide. The proportion of this heat and moisture which is transferred to the user depends upon how much can be removed from the recirculating air between the absorbent and the mouthpiece. This paper discusses the present methods of heat removal and describes the design and test results of a prototype evaporative cooler.

The use of wetlands to treat mine drainage has become increasingly common, particularly as more information is available on their operation and construction. However, the lifetime of each system is still, at best, an estimate. Treatment lifetime depends on the types of processes that provide the majority of the metal removal. Anaerobic systems (vertical flow systems) rely primarily on sulfate reducing bacteria, which reduce sulfate to sulfide and generate alkalinity. Metals can be precipitated as sulfides, and acidity is neutralized. These systems can remove over 90% of the metals and increase pH from around 4 to over 7. The bacteria will remain active as long as the system remains anaerobic and contains an adequate supply of sulfate and small chain organics. Although estimates of lifetime made on the total carbon in the system suggest that lifetime should exceed 20 years, data from field and laboratory studies show that the rate of sulfate reaction decreases with time, and that after several years rates decreased substantially. To maintain acceptable treatment, either additional organic material must be added or the total metal and acid load to the system would need to be reduced substantially. Aerobic systems (overland flow wetlands) can effectively remove metals from neutral mine drainage by reactions with organic material in the substrate. Over 90% of the copper and nickel have been removed in aerobic systems treating mine drainage in Minnesota. The primary removal processes in these systems include adsorption, ion exchange and complexation, which are finite; removal will cease unless new removal sites are generated. Two wetlands built in Minnesota have been successfully treating mine drainage for 12 years. At one of the wetlands, the annual production of new removal sites has been estimated to be equal to the annual metal input, and, as a result, metal removal should theoretically continue indefinitely.

As global energy demands increase, there will be a critical need to employ fuels that have minimal environmental impacts. While hydrogen is considered the ultimate fuel for that purpose, hydrocarbon based fuels will be in use for a considerable time and will probably be the first major source of hydrogen for next generation power systems. The best fuel for this transition will be natural gas because of the high hydrogen to carbon ratio. Natural gas hydrates have the potential to meet the global energy needs for the foreseeable future. The amount of energy stored in natural gas hydrates is significantly more than that of all the other fossil fuels combined. However, most proposed techniques for recovering the natural gas from the hydrate require too much energy input, raise safety concerns or can only recover a fraction of the gas. This paper discusses the technical feasibility of a novel method of gas production in hydrate reservoirs. The method is an in-situ process that creates a point heat source in the hydrate formation. This method not only significantly reduces the energy input, but also has the potential to sequester as much or more CO2 than would be produced from combustion of the natural gas produced, thus making this in-situ methane production technique virtually carbon neutral. Simulations using FEMLAB™ show that the method offers an energy efficient and environmentally friendly way to produce natural gas from hydrate reservoirs. Preliminary results indicate that it is possible to have an energy efficiency of nearly 90% for land based reservoirs for hydrate loadings of 20%. The simulation results also suggest that alternatives to a point source can be employed which may improve the process efficiency.

"Higher production demands across all bulk handling segments require increased efficiency at the lowest cost of operation, in the safest and most effective manner possible. As conveyor systems become wider, faster and longer, more energy output and more controlled throughput will be needed. Add an increasingly stringent regulatory environment and cost-conscious plant managers must closely review which new equipment and design options align with their long-term goals for the best return on investment (ROI).There are primarily two separate market segments using conveyor belts. One is in process industries such as food, chemicals, paper and powders. Handled in relatively low volumes, the bulk materials that enter these processes are generally of a consistent size and quality. The other market includes mining, coal handling and cement, where the bulk material’s quality and size vary, and the volumes are typically much greater. While both segments face similar issues with safety and environmental control, the properties of the materials handled and the volumes transferred suggest different approaches, with one thing in common: increased belt speeds requiring modern equipment upgrades.Safety at higher belt speedsWith companies recognizing that safety does indeed pay, safety is likely to become a new source of cost reduction. The percentage of mines and processing facilities with a robust safety culture are likely to increase over the next 30 years to the point where it is the norm, not the exception. In most cases, with only a marginal adjustment to the belt speed, operators quickly discover unanticipated problems in existing equipment and workplace safety. These problems are commonly indicated by the larger volume of spillage, increased dust emissions, belt misalignment and more frequent equipment wear or failures."

In 1962, while investigating the tungsten potential in the Thompson Creek area for Union Carbide Corp., Henry T. Eyrich obtained anomalous concentrations of molybdenum (up to 19 ppm Mo) from stream sediment samples collected along Pat Hughes Creek, a tributary to Thompson Creek. Follow-up investigations by Eyrich during the same year disclosed the presence of a hydrothermally altered and molybdenite-bearing granitic exposure in the headwaters of Pat Hughes Creek about 2.4 km (1.5 miles) upstream from the sample point. The altered outcrop measured about 549 by 305 m (1800 by 1000 ft), contained abundant northwest-trending quartz veins locally with molybdenite, and was overlain and surrounded by the Challis volcanic extrusive sequence of mid-Tertiary age. Eyrich's subsequent soil and rock chip geochemical sampling program over the altered outcrop area showed a general increase in the molybdenum content to the northwest toward the postmineral Challis volcanic cover. Over a distance of about 305 m (1000 ft), values in the altered intrusive rock increased from less than 5 ppm Mo to over 600 ppm Mo, with aconcomitant intensity of the hydrothermal alteration pattern. Based on these geochemical results and on preliminar; megascopic hydrothermal alteration studies, Eyrich correctly concluded that the altered outcrop is an erosional window and that molybdenum mineralization of sufficient grade could exist beneath the Challis volcanic cover some distance further to the northwest. His recommendation to test the area of potential molybdenum mineralization with several drill holes was, however, declined by Union Carbide in 1962. The property remained unclaimed until 1967, when Eyrich joined Cyprus Mines Corp. Acting on Eyrich's recommendation, Cyprus immediately staked 26 lode mining claims to cover not only the altered intrusive outcrop, but also the northwest trend of mineralization where it projected beneath Challis volcanic rocks. Eleven of these claims are now patented.

Our industry has developed to the skilled, experienced and productive industry that we now enjoy as a result of the visions of great engineers throughout history, but, in particular for their visions in the last 1 centuries. Unfortunately for our forefathers, the technology lagged so far behind that these exceptional visions could not be realized for decades, sometimes for a century. All that has changed in recent time and many bold and visionary projects can now be constructed and operated because of dramatic advances in technology. Before, say, 1950, tunnel technology developed very slowly. However, technology is now developing at such a fast rate that planners and decision makers are challenged to stay ahead. Moreover, new technology will develop during the lifetime of any project that can dramatically improve under-ground space projects. One of the best examples of this technological advancement is that of closed-face TBMs which now make tunneling feasible in previously impossible ground conditions. Since it usually takes a decade or more to plan, overcome environmental and political issues, construct, and put into service major projects, planners and designers are challenged by the changes in technology that occurs during the long time span of planning and construction. This is particularly true of large infrastructure projects such as transportation, water and wastewater systems and other major underground schemes. Also, since the serviceable life of many of these tunnels is often over one century, planners must consider not only lessons learned from the past but also what new concepts and innovations may develop over an extremely long time. These and other issues create a great challenge to planners and illustrate the great importance of careful but creative vision and flexibility during planning of long-term tunnel and underground space projects.

Mining at Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting's Snow Lake Division is now in the mature stage of the mines' lives. These base metal copper-zinc mines have been operating for more than 30 years. Stopes had small pillars called "crown pillars" left between them. These pillars range up to 100 m (330 ft) long by 40 m (130 ft) wide and 15 m (50 ft) thick. Hudson Bay have been successful in removing these pillars by using cable slings, electric scoops, longhole mining and diesel load-haul-dump equipment. The different shapes and sizes of these pillars has required that many innovative techniques be tried in order to find acceptable economic mining methods. An overview of the different methods will be outlined. Background Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting's Snow Lake Division is located in Manitoba some 800 km (500 miles) north of Winnipeg and 200 km (125 miles) by road from the Hudson Bay smelter complex located in Flin Flon, Manitoba (Fig. I). There are currently three producing underground mines and one open pit operating at the Snow Lake Division, producing copper and zinc concentrates. Pillar recovery is intensive and vital to continued production of these mature mines. The crown pillars are producing more than 50% of the current mine production. This figure will increase in the future. The two mines at which crown pillar recovery is taking place and that will be discussed are the 400 t/d (440 stpd) Rod Mine and the 1000 t/d (1100 stpd) Stall Lake Mine, both five-day-a-week producers. Crown pillar mining has been applied for some time at these mines. However, it was only recently that the crown pillars became vital to production. This has necessitated a number of innovative techniques to recover them.
