An effective maintenance program ensures the adequate availability of production equipment. In turn, this availability enables production to maximize utilization and successfully meet production targets. An overall production strategy is necessary to draw all departments toward this common effort. Only then will production targets be met. From the maintenance view this means that production must comply with PM and repair schedules. Purchasing must supply parts and materials on time. Mine engineering must not overwhelm maintenance with non-vital construction. Accounting must provide correct, timely cost information - - etc. This strategy - - its content, effectiveness and enforcement is the responsibility of the mine manager . . . his alone. This paper describes a successful approach to maintenance within this strategy.

The use of cyanides in the extraction of gold and silver is well known.1 Such extractions employ con¬centrations of cyanide in the range of 0.02-0.25 % sodium cyanide equivalent in leaching cycles of 24-48 hours and frequently longer. Copper minerals, even though minor components of precious metal ores, dissolve in these cyanide leaching solutions, consume cyanide, cause fouling of mill solutions, and thus interfere with the precipitation and recovery of gold and silver. 2,3,4 This paper presents a summary of laboratory investigations on the use of cyanide solutions as extractants for copper from various copper-bearing ore fractions. In view of the metal contents involved, it will be apparent that larger quantities of cyanide are required to extract copper than for the extraction of precious metals. In cyanide solutions of concentrations generally favorable to copper extraction, sulfide and oxide copper minerals were found to dissolve rapidly at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. For example, on products in the flotation size range, the major portions (e.g. 65-85%) of the extractable copper frequently dissolved in 2-10 minutes. At coarser grinds, e.g. 100% minus 28 mesh and 100% minus 10 mesh, 75-85% of the total copper was extracted in 30 minutes.

"The paper presents a brief overview of the long mining history and the more recent political development in the Slovak and Czech Republics as well as in Norway and Sweden. Mining used to be very important sources of economic wealth in the four countries, but in today’s economy does exploitation of non-energy minerals usually account for less than one per cent of the GNP. The paper will discuss and compare the mining legislation, land use planning and mineral policies framework in the four countries and how this may influence sustainable management of mineral resources including planning for mineral supply, landbanks and sterilisation of resources. The paper will then identify some positive and negative elements in each country’s political and administrative framework."

The Rasmussen Ridge phosphate mine is owned by Agrium CPO and operated by a unit of Washington Group International. The mine, located in southeastern Idaho, received the Idaho Inter-Agency Reclamation Award from the Idaho Department of Lands. The phosphate mine, located northeast of Soda Springs, was honored for “Excellence in Ongoing Operations, Soft Rock Mines over 75Acres.” Charles Ross is Agrium CPO’s plant manager. He said, “We are honored to receive this award. This recognizes the commitment and dedication of our employees toward the protection of the environment. I am really proud of the people that work at the mine.”

Nuclear power currently produces about 20% of the electricity in the US, with 104 nuclear power plants located in 31 states. The commercial US nuclear industry contributes over $4 billion annually to US workers in salaries and wages. 25,000 new jobs need to be filled in the next 5 years. There are over 30 new power plants under consideration by US utilities. The operating reactors use uranium oxide fuel enriched to about 4% U235 and fission is the process used to generate heat to form steam to drive the turbine generators. Nuclear energy is an important element in the US generation portfolio and represents the largest producer of nearly emission-free electricity. Most, if not all, of the operating plants will secure an extended 20 years of operation or more. The last plant constructed was ordered in 1978. New smaller, modular reactors are under design to provide less expensive, expandable generation options.

Passive treatment of mine drainage using constructed wetlands has been employed on coal and metal mine sites since about 1985. The technology has advanced significantly since then; there are currently over 600 of these systems treating coal mine drainage in the Eastern U.S. at flow rates of hundreds of liters per minute. Passive treatment performance at three metal mines discussed in this paper has been positive for a wide variety of flows, water chemistry, and climates. The sites include a high-altitude underground copper mine, acidic seepage from a gold heap leach pad, and pumped effluent from an active underground lead mine in Missouri.

Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mining Co. is developing a full-scale pad injection program as part of the overall operational plan for the Valley Leach Facility. As part of the development process the mechanics of the injection methodology are evaluated in the context of physical injection measurements, outcome from geophysical monitoring, and gold leaching theory. The results indicate that hydraulic fracturing analogies advanced heretofore do not accurately describe injection phenomena in unconsolidated and noncohesive material typical of leach pads. A new interpretation is presented and extended to define operational strategies for maximizing gold production.

Two complex copper concentrates and one arsenical nickel concentrate were oxidized in simulated flash smelting conditions using a laminar-flow furnace. The concentrates contained tetrahedrite as Sb-bearing mineral and arsenopyrite and gersdorfite as As-bearing minerals. At high temperatures and low oxygen potentials, Sb tended to vaporize, but with high oxygen potentials it was captured in mixed oxide phases with copper and iron. Arsenic was found to follow antimony in copper concentrates, although with less sharp contrast between low and high oxygen potentials. In the nickel concentrate studied, arsenic was found to vaporize from the gersdorffite particles and, subsequently, condense on the other particles.

The separation and recovery of copper from cyanide solution has been investigated since the early 1900s. The precipitation of copper using sulfide ion was patented in 1911 by Williamson, published by Leaver & Woolf of the USBM in 1931 and Cyanamid in 1960s. The current practice of sulfide precipitation is used in various processes such as “SART" for cyanide regeneration and copper recovery. The precipitation of copper sulfide requires the pH of the clear solution to be in the range of 4-6. The precipitated copper sulfide can be sold to smelters. Alternatively, copper cyanide can be precipitated from clear solutions in the pH range of 2-3. However, selling copper cyanide is challenging because of its cyanide content. Past work has focused on the use of boiling sulfuric acid to convert copper cyanide to copper sulfate as published by Seracini in 1991. This paper describes a simple process to convert copper cyanide to copper oxide using sodium hydroxide at ambient temperatures. The cuprite can be sold to smelters or used as a feed to an electrowinning circuit to produce copper cathodes. The process provides an effective method to recover copper from cyanide solutions with a lower capital requirement.

The terms “powerful” or “selective,” which are commonly used to characetrize frothers, have intuitive rather than scientific meaning. A research program has been set out to study fundamental properties of the flotation frothers and to identify the tests which can provide information needed to characterize and classify such flotation agents.

The Silver Line Phase III Project is the final one mile underground segment of the new Bus Rapid Transit in downtown Boston. The project is expected to significantly reduce existing and anticipated traffic congestion. The twin one-lane tunnels and two station platforms will be built by NATM in Boston saturated soft clay, sand and till layers in proximity to several historical buildings, underpinning two existing cut and cover subway stations and several major utilities in densely built urban area. This paper presents the analysis and design of the NATM tunnels and stations detailing the excavation sequence and support system and various ground improvement and pre-support techniques used in the preliminary and final design of the project

This review paper describes recent advances that have been made at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) in Brisbane in developing a framework for simulating the flotation process. The work has been carried out collaboratively with the Mineral Processing Research Unit of the University of Cape Town in South Africa (UCT), as part of the Australian Minerals Industries Research Association (AMIRA) P9 Project. The framework consists of four components, namely – the mathematical model of the flotation process, suitable measurement tools for characterising the flotation cell, a computer program for modelling and simulating the process and the plantas for testing and validating the flotation models. A brief description of the model is first presented, then a number of applications of the model are described. The paper shows how the model can be used to optimise the performance of flotation cells, and then two case studies on the modelling methodologies are described. Finally the current and future plans of the project are outlined.

In a large surface mine design, different kinds of mining equipment can be selected. Even though the major purpose of capital investment is to get more profit from mining activities, there are some other complicated factors which influence the selection of mining equipment must be considered as well. A fuzzy evaluation model with fuzzy set theory is proposed in the paper to make a good selection of mining equipment in which different kinds of factors including quantitative and nonquantitative ones can be taken into account at the same time. With the model, mining equipment selection of a large surface mine can take into consideration not only economic factors but also some other factors which play important role in mining system.

The history of mining education, like the history of the mining industry, is typified by “boom and bust” cycles. In academia, the perpetual problem can be stated as “too many graduates for the jobs or too many jobs for the graduates.” The deep “bust cycle” that spanned the 1990s through 2003 spawned renewed efforts to eliminate, consolidate, restructure, rename, reinvent or otherwise change mining education to make it (for some) more fiscally or socially acceptable. During this period, a number of mining programs were eliminated, and by the late 1990s senior people in academia and their counter-parts in industry became increasing concerned about the very real possibility that strategic disciplines may disappear altogether. As a result, the Mining and Metallurgy Society of America (MMSA) created an educational committee to explore how industry could help preserve key programs necessary to provide future professionals. Several meetings were held to assess the problems and look for solutions. In 2004, this effort culminated in the first of the “Engineering Education” sessions to be held at the SME Annual Meetings. In response to the information presented in this first meeting, Marc LeVier (then president of MMSA) invited a number of the participants to reconvene the following day. An action plan was formulated and a task force was organized. To more fully represent all industry sectors, SME later that year assumed the sponsorship role for the task force.

The Ag/S specific ion electrode has been evaluated for analysis of both free and total cyanide. Metal cyanide solutions were prepared from reagent grade compounds and by stoichiometric fixture of the metal with a potassium cyanide solution. Solutions containing Cu+1, Ni+2, Fe+2, Fe+3 and Zn+2 complexes were analyzed prior to and following EDTA pre treatment. This effort provides an understanding of the effect of each metal cyanide complex on the SIE analysis of free and "total" cyanide.

7.1 INTRODUCTION The circulating fluid (generally an aqueous cyanide solution) is the major active component of heap leaching. This solution extracts precious metal from the heap and is then processed to recover the precious metal. The solution continuously recycles through the heap to recover more precious metal. With each cycle through the heap, water and chemicals are lost. Make-up water and chemicals must be added to balance losses from evaporation, seepage, entrainment, and chemical reaction in the heap, as well as any other processing losses. Adding more water than needed can result in a build-up of water as inventory in the various ponds and can eventually require that water be discharged from the operation. This is an extremely undesirable condition, and can often be very expensive in both investment in water treating facilities and operating costs. Most heap leach facilities operate under a zero discharge permit; thus, a situation requiring water discharge can result in permit violation. Chemical solution control must be managed to maintain the optimum pH, dissolved oxygen content, and cyanide content, while preventing "scaling". Calcium-based precipitation is a common scaling problem in mill reclaim waters. A buildup of these deposits can result in severe reduction of water flow, loss of pump efficiency and eventual interruption in metal production. In addition, problems of plugged sprinkler heads, blinded leach pads and fouled carbon (in carbon recovery systems) can be and often are experienced when scale control is not maintained. The remainder of this chapter discusses chemical solution control and scaling prediction/prevention in the context of a "closed" system. Sizing of ponds to accommodate precipitation and runoff, collection systems, and other similar design considerations are not discussed here. These topics are deferred to later chapters, e.g. Chapter 10 considers design of collection systems while Chapter 12 discusses pond sizing. 7.2 CHEMICAL CONTROL Chemical composition of the circulating solution must be controlled by the operator if the heap leaching process is to be successful. INTRODUCTION This article describes the yellow cake drying, packaging and dust collection circuit of the United Nuclear Church Rock Mill. It also describes the layout and floor plan of this section as well as the operation and performance of the various equipment. In order to place the yellow cake section in perspective of the mill as a whole, the mill circuit is described briefly. CHURCH ROCK MILL GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Church Rock Mill contains six operating sections shown in Figure 1 in block diagram form. The grinding section consists of a semi-autogenous mill in closed circuit with a hydrocyclone. The slurry is then routed to the leaching tanks. Sulfuric acid and sodium chlorate is added to dissolve the uranium. The pulp is transferred from the leach tanks to the thickeners where the uranium bearing liquid is separated from the barren solids. The uranium bearing solution is then filtered and pumped to the solvent extraction section. [ ] In the solvent extraction section, the uranium bearing aqueous solution is brought into contact with an organic solution composed of kerosene, amine and isodecanol. The amine extracts the uranium from the aqueous solution. This organic solution is then routed to the stripping section, where the uranium is removed from the organic solution with an ammonium sulfate aqueous solution. The pregnant stripping solution now concentrated to 30 gpl U308 is routed to the precipitation tanks where ammonia is added to precipitate the uranium. The yellow cake is then washed in a counter current circuit of two thickeners and one centrifuge to remove impurities, mainly sulfates in order to meet specifications. The centrifuge centrate is routed to the second wash thickener for forward wash. The centrifuge cake at approximately 50% solids consistency is transferred to the yellow cake dryer via a screw conveyor. YELLOW CAKE DRYING, PACKAGING AND DUST COLLECTION Figure 2 shows the flowsheet of the integrated circuit of drying, packaging and dust collection. This section of course centers around the yellow cake dryer as the main equipment. The other main units are the dust collectors for the dryer and packaging respectively, a yellow cake storage bin and the yellow cake packaging facilities. Physically, all of this equipment occupies four floors, beginning at the top floor: 1. Both dust collector fans, the centrifuge and the screw conveyor to transport the yellow cake to the dryer. 2. The dryer, fire box and both dust collectors occupy the third floor. Figure 3 shows the floor plan of the third and fourth floors. 3. The yellow cake storage bin and dryer dust collector sump are located on the second floor. 4. The ground floor houses the loading facilities consisting of two load out ports from the bin to barrels, a roller conveyor loop, drum weighing scale, and change room facilities. Figure 4 shows the ground floor plan. Figure 5 is an elevation view of this section showing the overall equipment arrangement.

A new one-step process was developed to completely eliminate iron and directly obtain pure Ni, Co, and Cu chloride catholyte from nickel rich matte by low temperature (400 0c) chlorination roasting of Ni, Co, and Cu with HCl and leaching with water (PH 7). The effects of roasting temperature, time, oxygen potential and HCI addition and leaching temperature, pH, H2S04 addition and residue sulphur on the recovery of metals and purity of leaching solution were investigated. More than 99 % of Ni and Co and 95 % of Cu in the matte was directly extracted into the solution while 99.995 % of Fe remained in the residue. The iron concentration in the leaching solution was less than 3.6 X 10-5 mol/L.

Today, aggregate producers in the Denver Metropolitan area, herein defined as Denver and surrounding communities in Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Douglas and Jefferson Counties, are scrambling to secure their future reserves. The Denver market is somewhat unique among the larger metropolitan markets in that the source of needed aggregate for the future is very much undecided. 2. Present Aggregate Resources Presently, the annual consumption of aggregate resources in the Denver Metropolitan area amounts to approximately 16 million tons of sand, gravel and crushed stone of which the later accounts for about 20%. Based on population growth projections for the front range, by the year 2000 the annual rate of consumption for aggregate in the Denver Metro area could be in the 25+ million ton range.
