Oxide ores can consume enormous amounts of expensive sulfuric acid. The problem is amplified with increasing heap heights. One solution is to provide a thin liner and drainage system between each lift of ore, thereby intercepting the pregnant leach leach solution (PLS) after it exits the active lift. However, these liner systems require special attention to hydraulics, slope stability and geomembrane design criteria. Inadequate attention to the first two can result in reduced recoveries, increased acid consumption andsystem failures. The geomembrane selection criteria are different from the base liner, and optimizing its selection can have significant effects on the operation’s bottom line.

Minerals appraisers/valuers often find great difficulty in attempting to employ the sales comparison approach to the market value appraisal of development and operating stage mineral properties. An important factor generally overlooked is a comparison of net operating income (NOI) margins on a per-unit-of-production basis between mineral properties, whether these be demonstrated or forecast margins. NOI margins can vary greatly between mines or quarries that are producing similar products. Ultimately, the expected NOI margin determines what a buyer is willing to pay for an income-producing property. Here, common criticisms of the sales comparison approach by mineral appraisers are introduced. These are counterbalanced by raising some issues in the way the inputs for the income approach are usually derived by minerals appraisers and by review of some conspicuous examples of the much-too-common misuse or abuse of the income approach in market value mineral appraisals. Example transaction analyses and sales comparison analyses are used to demonstrate the author?s methodology for adjusting units of resource in his transaction adjustment tables. The examples are used as the basis for a discussion of ways to employ adjustments for operating economics and many other factors, while warning against the potential for double counting. The conclusions include a recommendation that minerals appraisers attempt to apply at least two of the three valuation approaches when appraising the market or fair value of development and operating stage mineral properties, the two being the sales comparison and income approaches.

The paper presents increasing importance of mineral secondary and waste raw materials in the minerals management in Poland. Definition of mineral secondary and waste raw materials is proposed, according to current Polish law. On this basis, sources of various types of mineral waste raw materials are analysed. The special attention is paid to the wastes from mining and processing, wastes from power plants, and wastes from steelworks and other smelters. Other types of waste and secondary materials, such as metallic containers, glass containers, batteries, metallic wastes and scraps, are also taken into account. Analysis of sources of such materials is shown together with the main directions of their economic use. Available sources of information on manufacture and use of the mentioned secondary and waste raw materials are also analysed. Finally, for a wide range of waste materials, their current and expected significance as substitutes for some industrial and construction minerals in Poland is given.

Mercury and silver polythiocarbonate sludge that was generated from the pilot testing of optimized mercury removal from cyanidation pregnant eluate solutions prior to Merrill-Crowe recovery of gold and silver were tested for long term stability at Newmont Metallurgical Services. Sludge samples were mixed with heap leach residue to simulate disposal of the sludge in spent or active areas of the heaps and leached for twenty weeks with water and cyanide leaching solution, respectively. Leach testing results are presented as well as analysis of the sludge using scanning electron microscope techniques down to the <1000 nanometer scale.

Bismuth, one of the heavier chemical elements, is a pinkish metalloid that is chemically related to antimony. It is a byproduct of lead and tungsten extraction and, to a lesser extent, of copper and tin extraction. Antimony is a metalloid and less heavy chemical element, an extraction coproduct of metals such as lead, silver and gold. While both bismuth and antimony are metalloids, their major uses are as chemical compounds. "On October 11, 2000, an estimated 306 million gallons of water and coal waste slurry drained from an impoundment in Martin County, eastern Kentucky into an adjacent underground mine. Approximately 230 million gallons of the water and slurry discharged from two underground mine portals and affected over 75 miles of streams in Kentucky and West Virginia. In response to this and several other similar events, the U.S. Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE) commissioned an oversight study that evaluates how well state and federal regulatory programs established under the Surface Mining Control and Enforcement Act are ensuring that impoundment operators are minimizing the potential for impoundment-basin breakthroughs. The study focuses on slurry impoundments constructed in the hollows of Appalachia where numerous coal seams and steep topography combine to result in a large number of mined seams intersecting and underlying impounding facilities. Factors under consideration include: (1) full accounting of all mineable coal seams intersecting and underlying the impoundment; (2) identification and accurate location of underground mines close enough to the impoundment to potentially affect its stability; (3) assessment of the stability of coal barriers between the impoundment basin and adjacent mines, and stability of roof rock and pillars in mines subjacent to the structure; (4) determination of the flowability of the impounded slurry when expanding or undermining the facility are being considered; and (5) measures undertaken to reduce breakthrough potential when necessary. The oversight study began in 2012 after program-evaluation criteria were defined in an OSMRE technical position paper. The study is scheduled to be completed in 2017. BACKGROUND The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) authorizes the disposal of coal mine waste by constructing a coarse coal mine waste embankment across a valley and pumping the fine coal mine waste (slurry) into the resulting basin (Figure 1). A concern shared by many engineers, geologists, and mine inspectors familiar with coal mine waste slurry impoundments is related to the common occurrence of underground mine workings adjacent to or beneath the impoundment: the potential for slurry “breakthroughs” into mine works and subsequent breakouts into the surface waterways (Figure 2). On October 11, 2000 a combination of coal refuse slurry and water from the Big Branch impoundment in Martin County, Kentucky broke through into an underground mine and subsequently discharged into the receiving streams. The location of the point of breakthrough, pathways of slurry/water flow within the mine workings, and two points where the liquid exited the mine are shown in Figure 3. An estimated 306 million gallons of water and coal refuse slurry drained from the impoundment into the adjacent underground mine. Approximately 230 million gallons subsequently discharged from the underground mine at two portals."

This paper deals with the causes and mechanisms of pillar failure in a southern West Virginia coal mine. The conclusions are based on in-mine observations and analysis of mining methods, eyewitness account of the sequence of events, topographic and geologic conditions, and mechanical properties of mine roof, coal, and floor. The study indicated that massive pillar failure was caused by the collapse of the mine roof. The collapse of the mine roof was due to the combined effects of high lateral compressive stress and high extraction ratio causing excessive bending of the roof beyond its limit. It was assumed that the higher lateral compressive stress under such a shallow cover was probably due to the drastic change in the structural geology of the area and possible residual stresses. Eased on the analytical study it was concluded that the sudden release of elastic energy (shock) due to the rupture of the roof caused the squeezing of approximately eighty mine pillars.

INTRODUCTION The need for discussion of Owner-Engineer-Contractor relationships in tunneling arises from the increase in costly and time-consuming litigation. The paper examines the objectives, motivations and responsibilities of each party, discusses some common causes of claims in underground work, and makes some suggestions for improvements. The viewpoint and bias are those of an engineer. If a subtitle were required for the session, "Sharing the Risk" would be appropriate. Sharing the risk is an important aspect of Owner-Engineer-Contractor relationships because when a risk is shared, all parties have an incentive to minimize it. In order to realize the resource utilization of spent hydrodesulfurization catalyst, a solvent extraction-oxalic acid precipitation process is studied in this paper for efficiently recovering vanadium, nickel, and aluminum from the acid leaching solution of spent hydrodesulfurization catalyst. The process conditions for extracting vanadium with Cyanex 272 and precipitating nickel using oxalic acid as a precipitation agent were explored in detail. The results show that vanadium (IV) in the sulfuric acid medium containing nickel and aluminum was efficiently and selectively extracted by Cyanex 272. After three-stage countercurrent extraction, the extraction efficiency of vanadium was 99.76%, and the co-extraction efficiencies of nickel and aluminum were only 2.47% and 1.87%, respectively. Thermodynamic calculation shows that the extraction of vanadium (IV) from the sulfuric acid medium with Cyanex 272 is an endothermic reaction. The innovative method of oxalic acid precipitation was used to recover nickel from the raffinate, achieving selective extraction of nickel from the solution containing a high concentration of aluminum. The precipitation efficiency of nickel was 98.58%, while that of aluminum was only 0.75% under optimal conditions. The proposed flowsheet for the separation of vanadium, nickel, and aluminum from acid leaching solution may provide a new idea for the comprehensive recovery of valuable metals from spent hydrodesulfurization catalyst.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines and others have conducted a number of occupational exposure surveys since the publication of the International Agency for Research on Cancer report of 1989, which labeled diesel exhaust as a probable human carcinogen. These surveys have assessed diesel exhaust exposure using measurement of diesel aerosol and/or specific polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons as indicators of exposure. This paper reviews present diesel emission standards, available diesel exhaust aerosol measurement techniques, and the results of the occupational exposure surveys. In the surveys, diesel aerosol was emphasized because it is a major component of diesel exhaust, is suspected to contribute to the health hazard, and is readily measurable. Three primary aerosol measurement techniques were used: respirable combustible dust, size-selective sampling, and measurement of the elemental carbon fraction. Occupations surveyed included mine workers, railroad workers, forklift operators, fire fighters and truck drivers. The studies found mean diesel aerosol concentration levels in the range of 0.004 to 1.74 mg/m3? Highest aerosol exposures were in confined spaces such as mines where heavy diesel equipment is used. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons typically are found at very low concentration levels and are not unique to diesel exhaust.

Micron-sized gold disseminated in lower Cambrian siltstone has been found at the Sterling mine near Beatty, NV. A shoestring-shaped body has been developed by central and fringe drifts and is being mined via a modified retreat room and pillar system. The siliceous ore crushed to 5.08 cm (2 in ) is stacked to 4.6 m (15 ft) over a layered sand, gravel, and impervious PVC base. Gold is leached using a 0.1% cyanide solution and deposited on activated coconut shell carbon. Stripping of the carbon by hot solutions of 1% NaOH and 20% Ethanol yields overall recovery of about 75% of the fire assay head.

Magma Copper Co.&apos;s San Manuel solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX-EW) facility has operated since May 1986. The original facility had a design capacity of 22.6 kt/a (25,000 stpy) of electrowon copper cathode produced by processing pregnant leach solution from an open pit-heap leach operation. In 1988, the plant was expanded to 45.3 kt/ a (50,000 stpy) to incorporate processing in-situ leach solutions. This pager focuses primarily on the heap leaching area with regard to exploration, testing, feasibility, permitting, design and construction, and operating practices. Research using surfactant leaching aids to enhance copper recovery is also discussed.

"In this paper, the most significant environmental aspects that are identified in the Taft Copper Project (TCP) are the quality and quantity of water, pollution of the existing watercourses and post-mining land use, matters such as air and noise pollution are deemed to be of less significance. Analysis has been performed for Do Nothing Alternative, Pre-stripping Phase, Mining Phase, Closure and After-use Phases. Analysis of the environmental assessment of TCP was carried out in three stages. In the first stage, the general negative and positive aspects of the project were identified. In the second stage the intensity, magnitude and significance of the environmental impacts of the project were identified. The third stage is related to the final conclusions of the assessment team and the relevant reasoning. A modified Leopold Matrix was adopted for evaluating the significance and magnitude of the environmental impacts. For this project, the matrix was modified to allow the assessor to take account of negative and positive numbers."

Mining of copper ore and the related industries play an important role in Iran?s economy. Copper ore production in Iran accounts for 75% of the total production in the Middle East. All activities related to copper, that is, exploration, production, refinement etc are owned and managed by state owned companies. Decisions have been made to privatize all these activities. To assess the success of this privatization process, different components of the industry must be subject to economic analysis. In this paper, the cost estimation of all operations has been carried out. The total potential and attainable revenues have also been estimated using historical data available from the industry. Risk is a major factor in all mining activities and the copper industry of Iran has been subject to risk factors arising from many internal and external variables. These variables have been recognized and their effects evaluated. The effect of risk on the economic feasibility of the operations in the industry has also been analyzed.

Principles of Green Chemistry provide useful guidance for sustainable mineral process development. Laboratory bench scale testing was carried out using pregnant cyanide leach solutions, and a number of commercially available mercury precipitation reagents were compared using jar testing to determine the most efficient and selective reagents for mercury precipitation. The most efficient reagent identified was sodium polymeric thiocarbonate (NaPTC).Coagulation experiments with fine diatomaceous earth resulted in a stable precipitate, with good settling properties. On line monitoring of the mercury in solution is recommended for process implementation to conserve reagent removing approximately 90-95% of the mercury with minimal silver and negligible gold losses.

Instead, I will discuss what the investor should look for, and how he should use this knowledge in making his investment decision.

Mexico&apos;s mineral wealth has long been recognised and indeed has played a historically significant role on a world scale. The dynamics of the Mexican mineral industry have experienced a dramatic transformation especially over the last two decades. This transformation has mainly been instigated by the high growth rates and industrialisation of the Mexican economy since the 1960&apos;s. This paper focuses on the base metals sector of the industry which represents one of the major contributors to this transformation. The objective is to present a brief base metals review and to discuss some recent occurrences which pertain to this sector of the industry. This is followed by a discussion of mining&apos;s relevance in the current economic situation in Mexico. With this overview as background, the investment climate, primarily from a domestic investor&apos;s perspective and secondly in terms of foreign investment, is discussed. Finally, some recent government initiatives, including tax and accounting changes, are outlined. Any one of the sections of this paper can easily be developed into an extensive and indepth analysis; however, the intention of this paper is to provide the reader with a broad overview of the topics discussed.

FTIR spectroscopy has been used for the characterization of adsorbed oleate at the fluorite surface. It has been found that modest changes in the adsorption density at high temperature and high oxygen potential do not provide a satisfactory explanation for the significant increase in the hydrophobic character of the system under similar conditions. Rather, FTIR spectroscopic measurements suggest that chemical interaction between adsorbed oleyl groups occurs at high temperature and/or oxygen potential and accounts for the increased hydrophobicity. Specifically, the intensity of the =CH bond of the adsorbed oleate diminishes at high temperature and/or high oxygen potential. Such a phenomenon was not observed in control tests with the calcium oleate soap. For extensive reaction at the fluorite surface, the presence of a new surface species has been identified. These results indicate that the fluorite surface catalyzes an oxidation and/or polymerization reaction between adsorbed oleyl groups which results in a more hydrophobic structure at the fluorite surface.

An examination of the statistics of the world phosphate fertilizer industry since 1980 reveals an increasing tendency for fertilizer manufacturing activity to concentrate in phosphate rock mining areas. The economic justification for this resource-oriented strategy is clear. The choice between shipping phosphate rock, a comparatively low-value product, and shipping more valuable finished fertilizers will always be resolved in favor of the latter if cost considerations control the decision. The historical existence of substantial phosphate fertilizer manufacturing capacity oriented toward fertilizer-consuming activities and dependent on imported phosphate rock shows that narrow cost considerations have not always determined the industry&apos;s location. One is entitled to ask what conditions have changed to precipitate the observed relocations, and how permanent these changes are. These questions are the subject of this investigation.

Bacís mining is a young enterprise in Mexico that produces a pyrite concentrate rich in gold and silver. When gold and silver are associated to sulfide minerals, pre-treament such as: roasting, pressure oxidation and bioleching, is required to decompose the sulphides and thereby expose the gold and silver particles to the cyanide solution. A novel method demonstrates that the oxidation and dissolution of gold and silver in alka-line cyanide solution can be conducted simultaneously in the same autoclave in less than 90 minutes with a recovery that exceeds 96%. Factors affecting recovery efficiency such as pH, leaching time in the reactor, temperature, particle diameter, pressure, % of NaCN and pulp density were investigated.
