The plant data were collected from three streams around a dense medium drum for coarse coal cleaning operated at various volumetric ratio of medium-to-feed. The effect of the volumetric ratio of medium-to-feed (MF) and particle sizes on the performance criteria, g50 and Ep, of the dense medium drum. These measured data were adjusted and calculated for the yields and balanced relative density distributions by mass balanced method based on the statistic principle. These balanced data were then used to formulate the mathematical models of the separation distribution curves for the various feed size intervals. The correlation equations for the g50 and Ep as the function of inverse of the feed size, and MF and total throughput were established. A numerical algorithm utilizing the Secant method, based on the root searching principle, was developed for yield optimization and simulation of dense medium drum separation to improve the separation efficiency and hence the product yield. The relationships between the direct ash content and relative density of the particles in feed and the products were established and incorporated into the numerical algorithm for predicting the product quality.

In flotation or hydrometallurgical leaching of minerals, the cumulative metals recovery for a given process condition generally approaches a maximum value or an asymptote as the process time increases. This paper discusses the experimental methods of identifying and obtaining the asymptote of metals recovery through kinetic studies. In flotation, the kinetic asymptote of metal recovery, or ultimate recovery, is a function of grinding and collector dosage, but within a realistic variable range, is not a function of pH or temperature. However, variations in grinding, collector dosage, pH and temperature, all exert noticeable effects on flotation kinetics. Frothers generally have a minor affect on the asymptote, but have a major affect on flotation kinetics. The asymptote from batch flotation is found to be identical to that of a continuous flotation. In hydrometallurgical Leaching, the asymptote of metal recovery for a given leaching system is a function of such variables as temperature, particle size, and acid concentration.

The preparation of coal-water slurry fuel (CWSF) has the potential to be a commercially viable technology for the coal industry. The technology base required to prepare stable CWSF using grinding circuits has been developed over the past decade and is now being applied to the preparation of CWSF from wet coal fines which are generated during coal beneficiation. When preparing CWSF, the optimum CWSF formulation must be determined to ensure that the fuel will be stable while having acceptable atomization and combustion properties, and the production run must be monitored closely to ensure that the CWSF quality is maintained. This paper describes the CWSF formulation process, CWSF preparation circuits, and some of typical problems encountered in, and solutions to, the transportation and storage of CWSF.

A mathematical model based on the pertinent fluid dynamic equations to predict the performance of the hydro cyclone has been developed which will eventually replace the empirical model. Experimental measurements of fluid velocity profiles made in a 75 mm hydrocyclone by laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) agree well their predictions by solving the Navier-Stokes equations numerically. Particle slip velocity and particle trajectory were computed which in turn, yields separation curve of the hydrocyclone.

In his time on earth, man has mined about 93.3 kt (3 billion oz) of gold. About one-half of this has been produced in the past 35 years. Roughly one-third of this gold is held as reserve in Central Banks. One-third held is in personal reserves. And one-third is held as jewelry or other fabricated products. The world per capita availability of mined gold is increasing. There are many forces shaping gold's future. Gold currently has a favorable exchange ratio. This is encouraging many new gold mining developments. Production is increasing and new recovery techniques are surfacing. The use of gold in the financial markets is increasing in some unique ways. And gold is again fulfilling its role as a universal money, making its future predictable. Gold Today Man is currently mining gold at the rate of about 1.4 kt/a (44 million oz per year). This adds about 1.5% of newly mined gold to the total supply each year. This production plays a small role in the pricing mechanisms since much of the 93.3 kt (3 billion oz) mined is available to the market in some form. Tectonic activity in northern New Mexico during late Oligocene and early Miocene time presaged events which led to the development of molybdenite deposits at Questa. East-northeast directed crustal extension produced north-northwest striking tensional fracture systems paralleling the early Rio Grande rift. A sequence of Oligocene andesite flows and breccias is overlain by a thick early Miocene rhyolite ash-flow tuff. Eruption of the tuff initiated collapse of the Questa cauldron: the south margin of which occurs as an east-northeast striking, north-dipping structurally weak zone. Continued east-northeast post-cauldron extension permitted the high level emplacement of granite stocks with coeval rotational deformation of fault blocks composed of cauldron fill and [ ] floor. The stocks occupy north-northwest fracture zones in the south margin of the cauldron, and porphyry dikes occupy east- northeast striking faults that define the south margin. These two fracture systems have played a dominant role in localizing the intrusive porphyries and associated mineral deposits at Questa. A molybdenite-bearing breccia matrix and related stockwork mineralization generally occur within volcanic rocks. Mineral deposits are spatially related to fault zones and the upper con- tact of their source intrusives. Deposits are localized in fault zones up to several thousand feet long and 100 to 500 feet in diameter. Magmatic-hydrothermal solutions from the source aplite porphyries have produced potash metasomatic alteration which is strongly centered on the mineral and ore zones. Alteration in ore is represented by orthoclase, quartz and secondary biotite. This pattern grades into secondary biotite and propylitic zones forming successively weaker alteration assemblages away from ore. Younger phyllic and argillic assemblages are particularly widespread only where strong north-northwest extensional fracture zones cross the south cauldron margin.

Nautilus Minerals was listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange in May 2006. The company now has major mining companies Anglo America (5.7%), Teck Cominco (7.2%) and Epion Holdings (22.4%) as significant shareholders, and has raised approximately $US346 million dollars to develop the world's first deep-water mine. The company is currently targeting high-grade copper and gold in seafloor massive sulphide mineralization, located near plate boundaries in back-arch basins of the Western Pacific. The first mine scheduled to be developed by the company is located in 1,600 meters of water at Solwara 1, in the relatively quite waters of the Bismarck Sea approximately 50 km from the port of Rabaul, within the Territorial Waters of Papua New Guinea. During 2006 and 2007 the company completed detailed environmental and geological studies, culminating in a number of world firsts, including the world?s first NI 43-101 compliant resource statement and environmental impact study for a seafloor massive sulphide system. Permitting is well advanced for the project, with initial production scheduled for late 2010, subject to timely grant of the permits. Extensive government and stakeholder liaison and engagement has been undertaken throughout the projects life, and is a core feature of Nautilus' desire to "do it right" in all aspects of this new industry.

INTRODUCTION Crude oil reserves in the United States are still very large, even though for many years they have not been sufficient to supply our entire domestic requirements. They are continuously being depleted as oil is pumped from the ground, but new discoveries and improved secondary and tertiary recovery methods are helping to reduce the rate of depletion. It is thus a slowly diminishing resource, but even as it is being consumed, immense reserves of oil are left behind as the so called "un-recoverable" portion of petroleum formations. Most oil fields can only obtain a 15 to 40% recovery of the original reservoir, and it is widely quoted that there are still about 300 billion barrels of this un-recoverable oil still in place (Mauch, 1980, etc.). With the present comparatively high oil prices, and the possibility of even higher future prices and short supply, this oil becomes an interesting potential reserve. Mining the petroleum formation would be one means of recovering at least a portion of this oil. The concept of oil mining is neither new nor limited to conventional oil fields, since the procedure could be equally employed with the otherwise difficult to produce heavy oil deposits, and the solid or semi-solid tar sands and diatomaceous hydrocarbon formations. Estimates place the U.S. tar sand resource at about 30 billion barrels, and heavy oil at 5-10 billion barrels (Unitar, 1982). Figure 1 graphically summarizes the heavy oil reserves based upon formation depth and characteristics, while Figure 2 shows their location. MFIRE is a mine ventilation and fire interaction computer simulation program. It allows transient state ventilation simulation and features mass based flow rates, natural ventilation, air recirculation, fan curve fitting, airflow reversal and product of combustion tracking. MFIRE was designed to accommodate the needs of the mining industry for routine ventilation calculations and mine emergency planning. This paper describes recent work by the Bureau and MTU to improve MFIRE by incorporating humidity in the mass flow and heat exchange calculations, a data file preparation program and variable reference density in the network calculations. Recent bug fixes are also discussed.

Introduction Tanco History Tanco is sometimes known as the Bernic Lake Mine. It is located about 180 km east-northeast of Winnipeg close to the Manitoba-Ontario boundary. Tanco operates an underground mine employing ramp access, room and pillar mining and shaft hoisting for the production of tantalum, lithium and cesium minerals. Tantalum recovery employs conventional gravity and centrifugal concentration methods along with a flotation process which recovers ultra-fine tantalum. All tantalum concentrates are shipped to Cabot Supermetals, Boyertown, Pa., for the production of tantalum chemicals and metals. Tanco also produces lithium products from spodumene ore. The lithium concentrates from Tanco are shipped worldwide for use in ceramics, specialty glass and mold powders. Cesium processing involves the dry grinding of pollucite as feed stock to the on-site chemical plant dedicated to the production of cesium formate, a high density drilling fluid. Tantalum milling operations commenced in 1969. In the early years of the operation, feed grades were three to four times as high as they are today. Coarse-grained tantalum mineralization with complete tantalum liberation at sizes of 300 µm allowed for easy recovery with conventional equipment such as spirals and shaking tables. Over the years, the process and feed material to the plant have drastically changed. Due to drastically reduced liberation sizes, efforts have been made to try to recover as much of the liberated particles as possible in order to maintain acceptable recoveries.

The mining industry in northern Ontario is known mostly for its huge nickel deposits. Inco’s and Falconbridge’s nickel mines in the Sudbury Basin are the best known. And with nickel prices being what they are, interest in the region continues. And how. Inco and Falconbridge want to merge. Teck Cominco wants Inco, but without Falconbridge. Xstrata made a hostile bid for Falconbridge, which Falconbridge rejected. And, in June, Phelps Dodge trumped them all when it made an approximately US$40-billion friendly offer for Inco and Falconbridge in a two-part deal.

Electrowinning is a key process for copper production contributing roughly twenty percent globally and thirty to forty percent of production in the Americas1. Copper grade is assessed largely on deposit smoothness and on level of impurities in the metal. Smoothing aids are essential to create dense, low porosity deposits and guar has long been the material of choice for this purpose. Guar is, however, poorly stable under the strongly acidic electrowinning conditions, underlying ongoing research to identify an effective, acid-tolerant replacement. Current efficiency is also a critical factor in controlling copper production costs and chemical additives should ideally improve current efficiency as well as improving deposit smoothness.

"In many mineral processing applications it is necessary to know the isoelectric points of the various minerals in the ore to properly perform flotation and other mineral separations. However, current zeta potential analysis technology used to determine the isoelectric point of a particle suspension cannot deliver the isoelectric point of each individual mineral, just an average of the mineral system. Traditionally, individual isoelectric points have been gathered by testing pure, synthetic minerals. These values can vary widely depending on the mineral synthesis procedure and the water quality used during the isoelectric point analysis. A more robust approach for determining the actual isoelectric point of a particular mineral in a mixture of minerals is needed. This paper details a method for determining the isoelectric point of an iron oxide mineral in a siliceous iron ore. The method uses a laser scattering particle size analyzer and a pH electrode to determine the pH at which the liberated mineral particles begin to flocculate as pH is decreased. The pH at which the average particle size rises dramatically is the isoelectric point of the mineral with the highest isoelectric point in the ore. This measurement technique was used on natural hematite, goethite and siderite ores as well as a synthetic mixture of pure silica and pure hematite. The results for synthetic hematite mixtures were comparable to literature values.IntroductionRecently there has been an increased interest in the processing of low-grade iron ores (Bolen, 2014; Carlson and Kawatra, 2008, 2011, 2013; Halt et al., 2014; Halt and Kawatra, 2014; Haselhuhn 2012, 2013; Haselhuhn et al., 2012a, 2012b; Kawatra and Halt, 2011; Liu et al., 2014; Manouchehri, 2014; Sandvik and Larsen, 2014; Semberg et al., 2014). The zeta potential of iron ore minerals is a very important and often overlooked aspect of iron ore mineral processing. Zeta potential is the charge at the shear plane of a surface in an aqueous environment (Carlson and Kawatra, 2013). Many ores consist of a variety of minerals differing in zeta potential. This property of a particle surface in water is responsible for either keeping the particles dispersed from each other or flocculated to each other. This is important during many operations such as flotation, desliming and thickening. Zeta potential is primarily a function of the pH of the water and the mineralogy of the particles, though certain ions within the water can also have a significant impact (Haselhuhn, 2012). Consider the following situation: silica (SiO2) particles and hematite (Fe2O3) particles are suspended in an aqueous solution. These two types of minerals have drastically different zeta potentials throughout the pH spectrum (Esumi et al., 1988). In alkaline conditions, both types of particles exhibit negative zeta potentials and will tend to disperse from each other. In acidic conditions (between pH of 3 and 6), silica has a negative zeta potential while hematite has a positive zeta potential, so these surfaces will tend to be attractive to each other and the particles will flocculate and settle. This phenomenon is visually described in Fig. 1. The pH at which the two minerals begin to attract to each other, or destabilize, is near hematite’s isoelectric point. The isoelectric point is defined as the pH at which the surface has a net zero zeta potential (Carlson and Kawatra, 2013)."

A gold and silver open-pit mine located in northwestern Chile contracted ACZ in 1991-92 to assess the stability of their spent ore pile and to determine the cause and magnitude of cyanide contamination associated with leaching operations. The mine is a conventional open-pit located at an elevation of approximately 4,800 meters (m.) (15,744 feet). A spent ore pile is located approximately 2,000 m. southwest of the mine and approximately 1,000 m. northeast of the active pad and plant facilities. The pile was constructed on a gentle northwest slope dipping 12 to 13 degrees. The pile is bordered by a small river to the northwest and by a larger river to the northeast. Both rivers eventually flow into Bolivia. Heap leaching and processing commenced at the mine in 1988. Since 1988, nearly 6.0 million tons of ore at an average grade of 1.96 grams/ton (0.07 ounces/ton) of gold and 52 grams/ton (1.83 ounces/ton) of silver have been treated by cyanide heap leach methods with zinc (Merrill Crowe) precipitation. In approximately three years of operation, the mine has yielded more than 225,000 ounces of gold and over 1.5 million ounces of silver. Currently ore is agglomerated and hauled to the leach pad by truck and is top loaded to produce a 5-meter lift height. Four contiguous reusable (on/off) leaching pads were constructed with an asphalt layer above a carefully compacted sub-base of High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) liner and screened fines. Leach solution of pH 10-11 containing 1.2 to 1.5 gram/liter of cyanide is applied to the heap at a rate of 10 liter/hour/square meter for a total active application period of 30 days. Leached (spent) ore is transferred to the spent ore pile located approximately 1,000 meters to the northeast. The pile currently contains approximately 6 million tons of spent ore. The pile liner, which has been constructed over a prepared sub-grade consists of three geosynthetic layers (geotextile/flexible membrane liner/geotextile). Long term objectives include washing the pile to recover an additional 3 to 4 percent gold and silver.

Tunnel damage from explosion and earthquake excitation is correlated with strain and particle motions. Critical strains and motions are then correlated with focal distance, which is so small that permanent strains are highly likely. The shaking process is then numerically modeled to investigate the effects of excitation frequency and joint orientation. The models confirm that near cavern blocks slide intermittently only at relatively high particle velocities during periods of low joint normal stress. Larger displacements occur with relatively small shear wave lengths or relatively high frequencies. Variation in joint orientation and rock mass dilation result in changes in displacement.

Underground mine fires remain a concern for mine operators, posing a health and safety risk to mineworkers. In the last decade, the number of mine fires has decreased significantly; however, dealing with an unknown fire in underground mines can be a challenging task, which could lead to a hazardous condition for miners during an evacuation and rescue operation. A timely detection of a mine fire and monitoring its characteristics, namely size and location, are of great importance in reducing the risk of mine fire injuries. A new improved fire location algorithm has been developed and integrated into an Atmospheric Monitoring System (AMS) program by researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). This paper describes the new fire location model and presents the results of verification fire tests conducted at the Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) facility of the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) using the collected AMS data. NIOSH is endeavoring to develop workplace solutions to improve detection of and reduce the risk of hazardous conditions in mines. The results demonstrate successful application of the improved fire location model and provide a useful tool for solving the problem of unknown fire location and reducing the risk of hazardous conditions.

Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mine is an epithermal gold deposit located in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Surface operations are continuing along with an expansion for an onsite mill to take place in the next couple of years. The surface pit is currently progressing downward from an oxidized zone into a transitional, more sulfide/ telluride-rich zone. Gold mineralization includes native gold, electrum, and tellurides. Cyanide heap leaching is the recovery process for the oxidized ore with the sulfide/telluride-rich ore to be processed at the new onsite mill. Ore characterization prior to mining is vital when there are two possible recovery processes. This characterization is dependent on geometallurgy. To identify the causes of the variability, multiple parameters are analyzed and assayed. These parameters are measured by a variety of analytical testwork. The analytical testwork provides measurements for the desired parameters. Geometallurgical models are developed for the parameters per recovery process, so estimations can be inserted into the resource model to optimize operations and recoveries.

The project includes 2.4 sq. miles of contiguous mining claims and leases in the Mojave Mining District, Kern County, California, approximately B5 miles northeast of Los Angeles. The property is readily accessible year round by all-weather roads and is within 6 miles of the main line of the Southern Pacific Railway.

This article revisits global projections made in 1981of eight metallic and fertilizer minerals for the year 2000. The objectives here are to quantify the differences between the projected and observed levels of consumption for the year 2000 for eight of the 26 nonfuel minerals covered in the earlier study. An attempt is then made to attribute these (often) large differences to the major determinants of minerals demand — income, technological, regulatory and other policy changes, and changes in the recycling rates of the metallic minerals. The eight minerals covered are aluminum, copper, iron, mercury, nickel, phosphate rock, potash and tin. This summary article presents the actual population, gross domestic product (GDP) and per capita GDP changes from 1970 to 2000, compared with the projected rates for these important determinants of mineral use, along with the observed growth rates of minerals consumption for the eight nonfuel minerals included in this study. When the projections are compared with the observed global consumption levels for the year 2000, the differences range from +43 percent for nickel to +229 percent for potash.

Frothers are surfactants used in floatation to aid generation of small bubbles. Studying events at the moment of bubble creation is a challenge because of the short time frame. This presentation introduces a novel acoustic approach. The technique has the resolution capable of detecting events that occur within 1-2 ms. The transition from coalescence to non-coalescence is tracked as a function of surfactant concentration and gas rate through the capillary. Results are given for some common flotation frothers and n-alcohols (C4-C8). A stress model is used to give a qualitative explanation to the observed action of frothers on coalescence prevention. Results for salt (sodium chloride) are included for comparison).
