Laguna del Rey is the name of a dry lake bed located in the State of Coahuila, Mexico in a semi-desertic terrain typical of the basin and range physiography. Química del Rey, S.A., a subsidiary of Industrias Peñoles, has been producing sodium sulphate since 20 years ago, from brines pumped from the sub-surface of the present playa. The spent brine is used as raw material for the production of magnesium oxide. An extensive, lenticular deposit is found just below the playa. It consists mostly of glauberite (sodium-calcium sulphate) and blöedite (sodium-magnesium sulphate). The glauberite occurs as thin crystals oriented at random and leave many void spaces among them. These intercrystalline spaces are partly filled with mud, but the whole mass of the evaporite is still very porous. A brine that contains in solution ions of sodium, magnesium, sulphate and chlorine occupies the voids of the sponge-like evaporite body.

"Pure sands are typically the domain of slurry shields due to their high permeability and their granular characteristics. However, the Earth Pressure Balanced (EPB) shield machine technology has advanced in recent years with improved conditioning agents and shield machines that are equipped with slurry injection facilities and alternative mucking methods. These new so-called hybrid EPB machines have steadily increased the range of application of the EPB technology. The contribution discusses the capacities and operational features of hybrid EPB vs. slurry shield technology in pure sands. At the example of the Metro Line 4 in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), the contribution shows that hybrid EPB tunneling in pure sands is possible and it is compared with a state-of-the-art slurry shield project as the KASIG project in Karlsruhe (Germany). Furthermore, the control of the support pressure by means of foam conditioning and slurry injection in conjunction with a close, real-time monitoring of machine parameters is discussed. INTRODUCTION Slurry shield and EPB technologies have both undergone significant developments in recent years, leading to the use of parts of one technology in the other and even to completely hybrid systems. Also the ranges of application (see recommendations by DAUB (DAUB 2010)) of both technologies have been shifted far beyond their original limits and are largely overlapping by now. Nevertheless, the basic principles of face support remain unchanged. Exploiting the possibilities of process data analysis (Maidl 2014), the interactions between the ground and the shield machine are a matter of research and have been intensely investigated. PRINCIPLES AND CALCULATION OF FACE SUPPORT PRESSURE Figure 1 shows the principles of two approaches for the determination of required support pressures: kinematic methods and numerical methods. Kinematic methods that are employed for the assessment of face stability only consider the situation in front of the TBM. The required face support force is determined by means of an assumed failure wedge that would form in ultimate limit state. Based on the ground properties, the vertical surcharge and the self-weight is transformed into a horizontal force along a virtual sliding surface. This horizontal force is to be balanced by the face support. The calculation results are amended by respective partial safety factors for water and earth pressure and the method-specific support pressure fluctuations are added."

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) East Side Access project (ESA) will, when it is complete, provide a new link to the east side of Manhattan from Long Island, NY that, linked with the Second Ave. Subway currently under construction, will assist in relieving overcrowding at Penn Station as well as the Lexington Ave. subway. ESA will bring Long Island Railroad (LIRR) directly from Long Island into a new station located 37 m (120 ft) beneath the existing Grand Central Terminal (GCT) located in the heart of Manhattan. It will connect the LIRR?s mainline tracks in Queens, via the existing 63rd Street Tunnel under the East River, to a new terminal constructed within, and beneath, the historic Grand Central Terminal.

The mineralogy of the Biwabik Iron Formation changes dramatically from west to east as the formation nears the basal contact of the Duluth Complex. This reflects a contact metamorphism that took place with the emplacement of the igneous Duluth Complex at tem¬peratures as high as 1200 °C. However, the mineralogy of the Biwabik Iron Formation also varies vertically through the stratigraphy of the unit. This variability in both the vertical and horizontal dimensions makes it difficult to predict exact horizons where specific minerals will occur. The iron-formation has been subdivided into four broad stratigraphic units (lower cherty, lower slaty, upper cherty, and upper slaty) and into four lateral mineralogical zones (1-4). Zone 1, the westernmost zone, is characterized by quartz, magnetite, hematite, carbonates, talc, chamosite, greenalite, minnesotaite, and stilpnomelane. The silicate mineralogy in Zone 2 of the Biwabik Iron Forma¬tion changes very little. However, the minerals begin to change dramatically in Zone 3. Most significantly, Zone 3 is characterized by the appearance of grunerite in both a tabular form and a fibrous form. In Zone 4, the original silicate minerals have completely reacted, and a new suite of minerals occupies the iron-formation. These include grunerite, hornblende, hedenbergite, ferrohypersthene (ferrosilite), and fayalite.

Heavy metals may be retained within deposits of sulfide minerals under oxidation and in the nearest recipients of drainage water by sorption to secondary iron precipitates. The extent of sorption is strongly influenced by solution pH and presence of complexing ligands, such as sulfate and natural organic acids. Desorption of metals and organidinorganic anions to recent secondary Fe precipitates, collected at the Kristineberg mine, Sweden, has been investigated under different geochemical conditions. Elemental composition and structural characterization (X-ray powder diffraction) indicate presence of schwertmannite. While metals such as Ni and Pb were fractionally desorbed from the precipitates under acidic conditions, oxyanions, e.g. arsenatdarsenite and sulfate were desorbed preferably under alkaline conditions. In a separate study the adsorption of NOM onto synthetic goethite was investigated. NOM adsorption showed a strong pH dependence, 95% was adsorbed at pH 3 and 40 % was adsorbed at pH 9. Addition of 2 mM of sulfate desorbed about 10 % of the adsorbed NOM.

Qualitative and interpretive information as obtained from geological and/or geophysical studies, in addition to precise measurement, is incorporated into the estimation process through an indicator variable. The indicator conditioned estimator is formulated as a cokriging, and its expression is data value dependent as opposed to that of the traditional kriging estimators. The solution of the dual cokriging system provides simultaneously an estimate of the unknown and an estimate of the conditional probability that the unknown belongs to a specific population or class. Being an unbiased and minimum-error-variance estimator by construction, the indicator conditioned estimator is better in the least square sense than the ordinary kriging estimator because it uses additional information carried by the indicator data. A case study using a large reference database is presented; the indicator conditioned estimates have a smaller conditional bias and a smaller error variance than the ordinary kriging estimates. The results also showed that the indicator conditioned estimator is more efficient for selection in mining.

There is considerable interest in the bioleaching of chalcopyrite concentrate for the production of copper. The residue of bioleached chalcopyrite often contains gold that needs to be recovered. Despite the high efficiency of copper bioleaching, the residue may contain appreciable quantities of copper, and the difficulties of cyanidation of gold from copper bearing materials are well recognised. This paper reports the results of using different methods to recover the gold values from bioleached chalcopyrite concentrate. In particular, the behaviour of cyanide and cyanide in the presence of ammonium ions as gold lixiviants were studied. The ammonia was employed to reduce the impact of the copper on cyanide consumption. Thiosulphate as a gold lixiviant was also employed with the aim of achieveing rapid leaching rates and to reduce the impact of residual sulphur species on lixiviant consumption. Bromine solution was used to research acidic gold leaching. The paper describes the advantages and disadvantages of using different reagents with respect to reagent consumption, selectivity and kinetic efficiency.

This study puts forward a virtual memory cutting method based on the prediction of AFC shape. The integrated key technologies include the generation of virtual teaching cutting curve, the height adjustment strategy of front and rear drum, cutting height adjustment strategy, the reciprocating cycle of cutting technology and so on. Through the two algorithms, SVM and ELM, the form of the next working cycle can be obtained by rolling prediction using the form information of AFC in the first several circulations. Based on the obtained dynamic fluctuation of the form in the vertical and horizontal working faces, the position and cutting information of the shearer during its operation can be controlled and predicted in advance, the memory cutting template can be adjusted and modified in time. Employing this method, the more stable, accurate and timely memory cutting of the shearer under the uneven coal seam could be realized.

Abandoned coal mines have many underground space resources, such as roadways, shafts, and gobs. Among them, abandoned roadways are the best gas storage space for underground compressed air energy storage (CAES). However, CAES caverns have high air pressure and strict sealing requirements. Therefore, the stability and sealing of abandoned roadways under high internal pressure must be analyzed. Afterward, the suitability of abandoned roadways used for CAES caverns should be evaluated. In this study, the numerical simulation software FLAC3D was used to calculate the stress, deformation, plastic zone volume, and pore pressure of surrounding rock in an abandoned roadway under 10 MPa internal pressure. The influence of buried depth, surrounding rock grade, and in situ stress state on roadway stability and the effect of surrounding rock permeability on roadway sealing were analyzed. Results showed that the stress, displacement, and plastic zone volume of surrounding rock were affected by high internal pressure when the buried depth was less than 300 m, but high internal pressure had little effect on them when the buried depth was more than 300 m. The suitable range of buried depth was more than 300 m. The optimal choice of surrounding rock grade was I and II, followed by grades III, IV, and V. The optimal choice of in situ stress state was σH > σh > σv, followed by σH > σv > σh and σv > σH > σh. The sensitivity of the stability evaluation parameters was ranked in descending order as follows: buried depth, surrounding rock grade, and in situ stress state. When the surrounding rock permeability was less than 1 × 10− 14m2, the 24-h air leakage rate of the roadway was less than 1%. The suitable range of surrounding rock permeability was less than 1 × 10− 14m2.

"Fostering positive community relations is a principal tenet of sustainable development, but conflict can test even the strongest of relationships. While conflict surrounding resource development projects has the potential to be destructive, it may actually pose opportunities for partnership and collaboration when managed effectively. It is therefore not only important for mineral resource professionals to recognize the financial and social costs associated with legal disputes among project stakeholders, but also for them to prioritize resolving social conflict using alternative channels that allow for win-win outcomes. A variety of dispute prevention and resolution techniques do exist, but successful practice is not yet the norm. Here we review the sources and consequences of social conflict in the context of mining projects, and discuss typical and alternative approaches to conflict management in light of their respective benefits and drawbacks. We also suggest implementation of conflict resolution lessons into resource-related university curricula as a critical step in the continued shift of the mining industry towards sustainable development. INTRODUCTION Social conflict is a recurring phenomenon in the human experience and serves as a critical mechanism for change [1-5]. It occurs when two or more parties perceive that their needs and interests are in direct competition with each other and believe they cannot be reasonably accommodated. Conflict over mineral resource activities, particularly the distribution of benefit and risk, has become an omnipresent issue throughout the world [6-7]. Contrary to common perception, however, conflict can be a positive, transformative encounter in some instances [2, 8-11]. For this to be possible, society and its acting agents must reconsider how to address conflict. What if conflict were only a challenge to try something different? It is well-understood that the mineral industries must manage an increasingly significant volume of social conflict [12-13], which can be a costly externality impacting all of whom are involved. We commonly consider conflict in a two-party sense, but this deeply over-simplifies the true number of stakeholders. Besides mining companies and community members, government policymakers and regulators, public interest groups, and judicial systems, to name a few, bear the social expenses of poorly-managed conflict [4, 6, 12, 14-22]. It is desirable for interested parties to participate actively in a constructive way to pursue their needs rather than contributing to adversarial relationships, operational problems, and legal costs [1, 4, 12]. Some mining companies are of course already working to develop more productive relationships with their stakeholders, but there is undoubtedly still a gap between ideal and common practices. This gap can inhibit collaboration and threaten the potential for mutually-beneficial resolutions to complex social issues [12]."

Several years ago I wrote a comprehensive paper 'entitled, "Future Trend of Bulk Carriers" dealing with the principle dimensions of vessels and how they can be predicted; then with loading and unloading of large carriers, especially considering various designs of "Self Unloaders". Since writing the paper, many large bulk carriers were basically built along the, predictions made. Maximum size today is in the 150,000 DWT class, with few exceptions, which are combination carriers (ore-oil) or OBO's (oil-bulk-ore) in the 200-250,000 DWT class in the same paper, many references were made cautioning engineers not to design ports which could be "obsolete tomorrow", however, these were not always followed. Nevertheless, during the past few years many modern ports were built signaling the beginning of a new area of "Super Ports". Super Ports can be built for various reasons, most important to provide transfer stations where bulk material is received from large carriers then transferred to smaller vessels or barges for distribution. Obviously, opposite movement of bulk commodities can justify the building of "Super Ports", however, these are not as difficult to build for many reasons. The Material Handling Industry has developed efficient means of unloading smaller vessels or barges with continuous-type unloaders and has mastered the art of storing, reclaiming, and moving large quantities of bulk material to high-capacity shiploaders. Nevertheless, the industry has failed to design and market efficient ship unloaders which in any way could match the presently attainable shiploading rates. For these reasons, it is considerably more difficult to build "Super Ports" for incoming rather than outgoing bulk materials with large bulk carriers. The purpose of this paper is to elaborate on problems affecting high-capacity, continuous ship unloaders, especially involving large bulk carriers. For better understanding, some references will be made to the smaller, continuous barge or ship unloaders, but only as the principles affect the larger units. "One of the most common emissions from detonating explosives are nitrogen oxides (NOx), which are potentially deadly if inhaled. Lab studies estimate emission quantities, though great variation is shown based on site-specific conditions, and lab tests may not fully represent field results. Field VALUES (have not been measured due to the vast area affected. OSMRE recently promised to release a ruling regarding surface mine NOx production. Once the ruling is implemented, it may eventually be necessary to monitor site-specific NOx production from blasting. A small unmanned aerial vehicle system (sUAS) is able to carry a NOx gas monitor, rapidly travel to the blast location, and to follow resulting clouds of dust and emission gasses. This project will perform laboratory tests to expand on current estimations, determine an optimal method for collecting data, and evaluate the ability for this unique application of sUAS to assist in health risk assessment for mine employees and nearby communities. Additionally, large initial NOx concentrations do not necessarily correlate to unsafe conditions, and this project will be ground breaking in observance of surface blasting emission dispersion. The project is still in early phases at the time of submission for this paper (Nov 1, 2017). Therefore, this paper focuses primarily on summarizing background research related to the project and a description of the project plan. INTRODUCTION Nitrogen oxide gases (NOx) are common emission by products of surface mine blasting. These gases can potentially cause risk to human health and safety, both for mine workers and communities near the blast site. However, these emission quantities are largely unmeasured and no attempts have been made to relate these VALUES (to human health risk. The primary objectives of this project are to determine actual quantities of emission gases produced during surface blasting, to evaluate immediate and long-term risks to nearby people, communities, and ecosystems, to develop a system for mine employees to easily monitor emission and risk levels, and then provide guidelines for mitigating health risks based on a location’s emission results. BACKGROUND Current research regarding health risk produced by surface mine blasting NOx emissions is extremely lacking. Estimations have been made based on laboratory research, though these same test results show wide ranges of possible gas quantities produced based on site-specific conditions. Even if these estimations are accurate, no method has been created to relate gas quantity produced to human exposure concentrations. Dimethylglyoxime reacts with nickel in a buffered ammonical-citrate solution containing the detergent ?Aquet? and hyroxylamine-hydrochloride. The resulting nickelous dimethylglyoxime is extracted with xylene. Visual comparison with standards permits the estimation of from 50 to 10,000 ppm of nickel. Soil, rock, or sediment may be decomposed by digestion with (1-3) nitric acid, allowing about 70 determinations per man-day to be carried out. With minor modifications to the above procedure, sediment and soil may be semi-quantitatively analyzed for nickel at the sample site. The chemical equipment is easily portable and the analysis extremely rapid because the buffer, dime thylglyoxime and xylene are added simultaneously to the sample and no heating is required. The sensitivity varies with the "availability" of the nickel ions; under favorable conditions, one may obtain a positive test for as little as 10 micrograms in soils and sediments. This procedure is similar to one, for the field determination of heavy metals described elsewhere by the author.

I. CONCEPT MARTA's Peachtree Center Station is being mined out of hard rock, directly beneath Atlanta's central business district, with minimal surface disruption during construction. Its cost is competitive with that of a conventional cut-and-cover alternative owing to its design concept, which utilizes the rock as a primary structural and architectural material. II. PLANNING The station was originally planned for cut-and-cover construction. However, Peachtree Street is unusually narrow for a main business street (generally 78 feet (24 m) between building lines) and cut-and-cover construction would therefore be very disruptive to surface traffic and severely restrict access to adjacent buildings, including Peachtree Center, Atlanta's showcase business/commercial complex. Approximately 7 billion tons of soil, rock and ore are currently being excavated in open pit mines and quarries on the North American continent at the present time. As the depth of excavation increases and the grade of ore being mined reduces, the safety and economy of the stability of the pit slopes becomes increasingly important. The magnitude of the potential influence on economics can be appreciated from the results of recent full scale field studies by Kennecott Copper Corporation at the Kimbley pit near Ely Nevada (Merrill, 1968). This pit was originally excavated with an average wall slope of 45°. Based on detailed studies it appeared that a slope of 610 would be stable. Subsequent excavation to this slope proved the original pit could have been steepened by 16° during production.

Located in downtown New York City, this project necessitated an innovative conveyor design for successful muck removal. This paper will discuss the technical challenges and engineering solutions of the muck transport system which consists of every commonly recognized version of a belt conveyor. The elaborate system includes a TBM conveyor integral to the back-up system, a wall-mounted extensible conveyor, a crown-mounted transfer conveyor, a floor-mounted fixed-length conveyor, a pocket-belt vertical conveyor, three cascading overland conveyors, and one radial stacker. The most challenging design element was an over-land conveyor featuring a box truss for muck transportation over Northern Boulevard while simultaneously going under the Queens Plaza railroad viaduct. An overview of the project is provided along with the following topics: developing final plans from the proposal concept, interfacing with existing works, communication with the joint venture, and complying with local regulations.
