SX operators have conducted extensive shut-downs and repairs over the years to mitigate solution leaks from failed stainless steel false floors and walls in rectangular mixersettler mix boxes. Hydrodynamic modeling using first principles and constitutive equations of fluid mechanics can inform an efficient structural redesign sufficient to eliminate the plate failures. Updated mix boxes have been performing without failure for over a decade. Given the extensive construction of the original Holmes and Narver mixer-settler design throughout the world that includes stainless steel lined rectangular primary and auxiliary mix boxes, SX operators may benefit from the approach, eliminating costly shutdowns, leaks to containment, and hazardous repairs.

Artisanal and small-scale underground gold mining in Colombia plays a significant role in the country’s economy, but it faces persistent occupational hazards that threaten worker safety. Despite mining economic contributions, outdated technologies, limited risk management practices, and insufficient regulatory enforcement have led to recurring workplace accidents, many of which have been fatal. This study presents a systematic review of mining-related accidents over the last decade. Through geo-referenced analysis, high-risk municipalities were identified, and the frequency of accidents was correlated with the mining legal status and operational practices of these municipalities. The findings underscore the urgent need for evidencebased interventions that are tailored to the country’s unique mining context. Ultimately, this research contributes to the global discourse on mining safety by highlighting practical pathways to reduce occupational risks and promote safer, healthier workplaces in resource-constrained environments.

An economic and operational evaluation of the unrecovered metal, physical conditions, and chemical environment in a leach pad should be made prior to decommissioning. This evaluation will help determine the possibility and method of secondary and/or enhanced metal recovery and the method(s) to be used for detoxification and heap closure. The evaluation requires quantitative sample collection in a locally variable, yet grossly homogenous material. An assessment of a valley fill heap leach pad was made using a technique borrowed from placer technology called sonic drilling. The sonic drilling technique produced very satisfactory core recovery and sample quality. At this site, drilling results demonstrated that the method of heap construction produced expected features after extensive long term leaching. Rather than a uniformly homogenous pile of metallurgically depleted crushed ore, an assemblage of solution channels, un-oxidized sections, unleached areas, and compaction due to various factors, were found. These conditions are thought to represent a normal, rather than unique, situation for a valley fill heap leach. The lack of this information can have a significant impact on the economics and methods of heap re-handling and ultimate closure.

Copper electrowinning operations have dramatically improved their ability to produce high quality copper at low costs over the past several decades. Even so, some fundamental knowledge is still lacking that could allow operations to run even more efficiently. For example, a rule of thumb exists that estimates a current efficiency loss of 2-3% per gram per liter of iron in the electrolyte. While several laboratory studies have been performed that demonstrate this rule of thumb is likely true, no definitive relationship exists. In this paper, the first steps in developing a definitive relationship are presented. The effective diffusivity of ferric ions in synthetic copper electrowinning solutions was measured using chronoamperometry and the Cottrell equation. The effective diffusivity of ferric ion was determined as a function of electrolyte concentration and temperature. Synthetic electrolytes were then used in laboratory-scaled copper electrowinning experiments, where relationships between current efficiency and solution composition were found to exist under stagnant conditions. Uranium ores leached with sulphuric acid typically have poor dewatering properties. Applicability of controlled neutralization where gypsum precipitates as crystalline particles, improving dewatering properties of material was examined. Neutralized material was then dewatered using paste thickener to increase underflow density. The objectives are to maximize water recovery due to water scarcity and to produce suitable cemented paste fill material for optimizing underground ore recovery. Work was performed on acidic slurry samples collected after leaching but before the resin-in-pulp uranium recovery. Controlled neutralization greatly reduced volume of neutralization precipitates giving higher densities and improving the dewatering (filtration) properties. As a result it would be possible to increase the water recycled to the mill. Another benefit is that sulphate in the recycled water was reduced to saturation limit minimizing scaling of process equipment. Additional test work is needed; however, Unconfined Compressive Strength results imply that controlled neutralization increases the strength of paste fill and possibly offers opportunities towards a viable backfill option.

The importance of properly designed and calculated performance factors for the BWE systems cannot be overemphasised. They are used by all levels of management in any mining organization for a wide variety of purposes, in particular for budgeting, for selecting new equipment, for monitoring current equipment and for comparison with other operations.

In maybe the world's first in a mine project financing, a US $55 million Rehabilitation Indemnity was given on behalf of the banks in a US $250 million loan to develop the Ranger uranium mine, Northern Territory, Australia. The basis of the financing was an estimate of removal of the tailings and replacement into the pit. The Indemnity was amortized by a sinking fund from the mine's revenues. Such a concept could be valuable for mineral developments in sensitive areas or jurisdictions such as British Columbia or Alaska.

The growing demand for rare earth elements (REEs) has led to numerous recent studies to recover these elements from various bearing ores and wastes. Therefore, the recovery of REEs from Ras Baroud polymetallic concentrate has been investigated in the current study. Physical beneficiation for the Ras Baroud pegmatite sample was carried out, yielding a concentrate for euxenite (Y), fergusonite (Y), xenotime (Y), monazite (Ce), allanite, thorite, uranothorite and Hf-zircon, which resulted in raising the concentrations of REEs, Th, Zr, U and Ti in the sample. Fusion digestion processes with sodium hydroxide were studied using the conceived predictive diagonal (CPD) technique. The three experimental digestion groups proved the dissolution of 99.9, 95.6, 99.9, 52.5 and 0.47 percent for REEs, Th, U, Ti and Zr, respectively, under fusion conditions of 723 K, 120 min, 1/1.5 ore-to-alkali ratio, and smaller than 100-μm particle sizes. Fusion kinetics, isotherms and thermodynamics were investigated using several suggested models, namely, pseudo reversible first order, uptake general model and shrinking core model, which matched well with the experimental digestion results. Selective recovery of actinide content from the REE content of the digested concentrate chloride solutions was accomplished using solvent extraction with di-2-ethyl hexyl phosphoric acid. About 99.9, 99.9 and 4.2 percent extraction efficiencies for Th, U and REEs were realized, respectively, using 0.3 mol/L solvent concentration in kerosene as a diluent, 1/2 organic-to-aqueous ratio, aqueous pH of 0.2 and contact time of 15 min. Thorium and uranium ions were stripped with 2.5 mol/L sulfuric acid solution with 94 and 98 percent stripping efficiency, respectively. A highly purified REE precipitate was obtained from the raffinate solutions. Zircon mineralization tailings were obtained as a byproduct through the alkaline digestion process.

Underground mining is a dynamic art and science with a diverse set of design, production, and economic criteria that must be considered before selecting an optimal method to extract the ore. While all methods can be technically classified as either self-supported, supported, or caving, the multitude of subsystems and existing variations bear witness to the fact that each orebody is unique and, as such, justifies an individual approach to optimize mineral extraction. In this sense, underground mining is an art. The ability to evaluate the unique characteristics of each ore body and utilize sound engineering principles to design the optimal system constitutes effective method selection. The task by no means ends at this juncture, however. Subsequent implementation requires an ability for modification. Very rarely are all the facts available to make a concrete decision prior to development of the resource. As a result, the risk of a wrong decision can never be eliminated. This requires a significant degree of flexibility with each method. Each unit of exploration, development, or exploitation work contributed to a deposit enhances knowledge of the ore body. The best mining methods are those that correctly account for the known parameters but provide an allowance for change at minimal cost and adapt to unanticipated conditions.

This paper has been written as one of a group of papers dealing with the subject "Cost Elements in Mining". What are cost elements in mining? The mine operator thinks of direct mining costs in terms of labor, materials, supplies and power, and we might define cost more generally as the price paid to acquire or produce something. Economic theory also has its concepts of cost. From one point of view, that of the consumer, the cost of mineral commodities might be viewed as the total price industry pays for mine output. Similarly, the mining company engaged in the on-going business of finding, developing and operating new mines is concerned very much today with the distribution of all the revenue paid for mine output and not just with its direct or controllable cash costs. In other words, what will the labor force, the supplier of energy, explosives, and reagents, and the supplier of government services, management, capital and the ore reserves receive for their contribution to production.

Powered haulage and haul truck-related fatal accidents are among the most frequent at surface mines. Industry organizations developed guidance on accident scenarios to address haul truck and mobile equipment collision-related accidents. However, there is a need to investigate accident data to prioritize these scenarios and identify factors relevant to developing validation methods for collision warning/avoidance technologies and determining their capabilities and limitations. Standards and effective validation methods are necessary for improving system efficacy within mining operations and promoting industry adoption. To address these needs, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) investigated available powered-haulage and machinery-related fatal accident reports documented by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Their objective was to gain a perspective for informing the development of test protocols and validation methods through determining the most prevalent accident scenarios and related factors. Our findings afford insight for addressing the most prevalent haul truck scenarios and relevant factors within U.S. surface mining environments.

The Minera Yanacocha operation presents various operating challenges, due to the complex structure of several heaps interconnected with ponds and gold recovery plants. A comprehensive process model has been developed in order to better understand the effects of certain operating parameters on issues such as water usage and inventory. An integral component of the water/mass balance of the process is a model of each heap that describes the flow and chemical behavior based on the individual characteristics of the heap. A computational fluid dynamic (CFD) software framework is used to model the individual heaps. The structure, calibration and validation of the model are described. Several examples demonstrating application of the process heap model are presented for the La Quinua heap. The effects of loss of solution flow to the heap (i.e., pump failure), increased cyanide levels in applied solutions and higher copper head grades on the process operation and balance are investigated with model simulations and compared to the baseline operating conditions. An example of estimating gold production and inventory based on projected heap loading plans is provided.

Oxidized sulfide minerals, commonly formed by weathering, increasingly are becoming important resources as primary sulfide deposits are depleted. Oxidation, in general, reduces selectivity and recovery in flotation. The objective of this research was to determine the mechanisms of oxidation and collector adsorption in sulfide systems as a step towards developing improved technologies for beneficiation of oxidized sulfides. Data from microcell flotation tests are combined with electrochemical and spectrophotometric measurements. The adsorption of ethyl xanthate (EX) on oxidized sulfides was characterized using AC impedance techniques and correlated to flotation response. The floatability of chalcocite, chalcopyrite and pyrite was dependent on the extent of oxidation. Oxidation for 1?) d at 65? C inhibited flotation of chalcocite, and chalcopyrite even after the addition of a large amount (1 x 10') M) of collector. Heavily oxidized (27 d) chalcocite remained unfloatable. However, longer oxidation of pyrite and chalcopyrite restored the floatability. Oxidation resulted in an electrically resistive, nonporous surface layer.

Personnel at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) are studying the technology and applications of salt-gradient solar ponds (see below) for both electrical and thermal energy generation. The brine extraction and processing site operated by the Kerr-McGee Corporation at Searles Lake, California, offers ideal conditions for economic construction of solar ponds. Furthermore, since rising conventional energy costs adversely affect the economic recovery of brine by the present process, this site was selected for a study on the feasibility of integrating the solution mining of trona (Na2CO3?NaHCO3?2H20) in the lower salt with solar ponds for heating. The major emphasis of this study was to determine whether inexpensive thermal energy available at the brine extraction site would be useful in extracting increased mineral value from the resource. The present operation, which involves the simple extraction of the complex brine and its processing at the adjacent plant, is sometimes referred to as solution mining. Since the concept discussed in this paper involves injecting a heated sodium sulfate brine to dissolve carbonate underground, the proposed scheme is referred to as "enhanced" solution mining. Mining engineering curriculum has been discussed and debated in meetings and conferences, and opinions and recommendations have been published in the literature since the inception of the official degree-granting mining engineering program at the Columbia School of Mines in 1864. The deliberations have usually been heightened during the periods of boom-and-bust cycles experienced by the mining industry since the 1920s. Currently, the global natural resource industry is undergoing another cycle, called ?super cycle,? characterized by elevated prices for metals and other natural resources. The super cycle is occurring as a result of the large deficit between the global supply and demand for natural resources, due, in large part, to economic expansion and development in countries such as China, India and Brazil. Because of this cycle, there is a shortage of mining engineers in the U.S., Canada and Australia.

"Mine monitoring through various sensors is a vital component of successful miner safety and health programs. Data from environmental, geotechnical, infrastructure and other types of sensors are increasingly used to discover and mitigate health and safety concerns in underground mines. In many smaller underground mines, as well as in the new development headings of larger underground mines, leaky feeder communication systems may be the only available means to transport crucial monitoring data. In addition, data transport is increasingly being delivered using Internet Protocol (IP), while older forms of serial communication are being retired. This paper presents the selection, configuration and testing methodologies employed by researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to integrate commercially available land mobile data radios into an existing leaky feeder communication system to provide IP data transport.IntroductionTo enhance the health and safety of their mining workforce, mine owners and operators are increasingly installing environmental monitoring and control systems in underground mines. Real-time, mine-wide monitoring is becoming a reality with the implementation of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) into the underground mining industry (Zhou et al., 2017). However, not all underground mines, especially smaller mines and new development headings in larger mines, have the information technology infrastructure in place to handle the data transport requirements for the newer Internet Protocol (IP)-based technologies that are part of IIoT.This was the case with a mine in the Western United States. It lacked the infrastructure to perform critical monitoring in remote headings. Therefore, the mine partnered with the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) to develop and evaluate a cost-effective solution for the real-time monitoring of geotechnical conditions in relatively remote sections of the mine. This paper describes SMRD’s solution to leverage the mine’s existing leaky feeder communications system to achieve IP data transport using commercially available land mobile data radios (NIOSH, 2013; Forooshani et al., 2013; Novak, Snyder and Kohler, 2010; Yarkan et al., 2009). The solution, fully evaluated in laboratory and mine environments, requires no modifications to the existing system, is economical, simple to implement, and reliable. It also allows for transition to higher-bandwidth IT networks, such as fiber optic or WiFi, should they become available."

During the testing and design of the Gold Fields' Chimney Creek mine, it was found that a much higher carbon loading was possible with CIC (carbon-in-solution columns) than with CIP (carbon-in-pulp). In an effort to keep the carbon handling minimized, an emphasis was put on forcing gold to the CIC circuit rather than the CIP. After considerable study, it was found that a circuit with two thickeners and an interstage leach would force 90% of the gold to CIC. Computer modelling indicates that the benefits of the hybrid circuit include higher recovery, less carbon handling, fewer leach tanks, and lower reagent costs.

The loading characteristics of gold-bromide species onto activated carbon were evaluated using a batch system. The overall loading of gold onto activated carbon was rapid for the first few hours, but it continued without cessation as a result of the reduction of gold. Therefore, conventional equilibrium considerations were not applicable. Although loading continued slowly after several days, an abnormally high, loading capacity value of 10-12 meq/g carbon (650-800 kg Au/t) could be attained in 72 hours. The loading of gold-bromo species by activated carbon was by the mass transfer of (AuBr4)- species to the external surface to be reduced to metallic gold by carbon. Elution of gold from loaded carbon was feasible provided the carbon had not been loaded to high capacity values. If loading is carried to high levels, complete elution becomes impractical, and the gold may be recovered by ashing the carbon. For the high loading capacities observed, this option would appear to be cost effective. The effect of several variables on the loading capacity of the activated carbon for gold-bromo species is discussed.

In two case studies we look at strategies of acceptance that the analyst can employ to gain entrance and to see his problem solution out to use. The first example comes from metal mines. The problem area was excessive usage and cost of wear parts in the concentrator and an atmosphere of crisis over frequent and unexpected breakdowns. The second case pertains to coal exploration. Better methods were being sought for representing coal quality in developing reserve tonnages. The first strategy is - Develop a detailed Human Impact Statement. The second strategy is - Write down in plain language with the keeper of the problem what he will consider as success in dealing with his problem.
