Two years ago, about the only US mining ventures that could turn even marginal profits were precious metals. In 1986, the price of gold dramatically increased, as did earnings from precious metals, mostly gold mines. First quarter results for 1987 show that gold will again be the most profitable type of mining in the US. All this money being made in gold resulted in many new mines being opened and hundreds of old workings being re-evaluated. The Society of Mining Engineers has put together a technical program to aid in developing precious metals mines. Small Mines Development in Precious Metals will take place Aug. 30-Sept. 2, 1987 at Bally's Hotel, Reno, NV. Problems facing the small miner The small miner has found and started most of the productive mines in the world, says Alfred G. Hoyl, of Coal Fuels Corp., Rollinsville, CO. Hoyl will state his case for small mines development in the opening session of the program. He will make the point that government regulations must never restrict the small mine or miner. And the mining industry must be careful not to crowd out the independent miner. "To restrict small mining is to say to our young men and women entering the mineral industry `There is no place for you as an independent.' Small is a relative term and we must never feel that starting small will restrict our possibilities of becoming big." In the same session, David J. Starbuck, Starbuck Minerals Management, Mayer, AZ will take a look at why smaller precious metals mines are profitable. Mining companies have changed their perspective on reworking previously mined properties. They are looking at abandoned properties in older mining districts. The attitude is that smaller operations in these districts can be profitable with the present economic climate, more advanced technology, and better management. Small, independent mining companies may not have the same resources to draw from as the majors. But there are affordable technologies available that fit into the independents' budget. Betty Gibbs, of Gibbs Associates, Boulder, Co will explain how a personal computer can help a small operation to analyze data more effectively and respond quickly to changing conditions. Scenarios will be developed that will describe how PCs can be incorporated into all phases of an operation. Financial institutions are becoming more willing to consider venture capital for small precious metals mines, according to Stanley Dempsey, Denver Mining Finance Co., Denver, CO. This may be in the form of equity or debt, he says, but they want to receive assurances of the quality of the resource. And they will ask about the ore reserves. Next, the potential lender will want to know about the mining method and en¬vironmental regulations. Dempsey will discuss these requirements. Once a high grade gold mineralization is located and reserves proven, it must be evaluated to determine which recovery process is best suited for this deposit. Robert Martinez, Amselco Minerals, Ely, NV will evaluate processes for such a deposit located in Mexico. Heap leaching, vat leaching, and a carbon-in-pulp circuit are all viable options, he says. He will explain which recovery process proved to be the most economic. Other papers in the introductory session include How to Best Use Consulting Firms to Accelerate the Development Process, by H. The geophysical aspect of reconnaissance marks the beginning of extensive computer applications supporting development of a mine. Although there are some storage and retrieval applications in geology, and some statistical analysis in geochemistry, large-scale compilation, reduction, and interpretation of mineral resource data are initiated in reconnaissance geophysics. The reasons for this fact are quite simple. Geophysics is oriented toward quantitative evaluation of areas of interest, and methods of data collection are automated to the extent that large amounts of analog and digital information are recorded. The large volume of data must be interpreted in a reasonable time. Furthermore, some modeling problems involving complex numerical solutions could not be attempted without the computer. Therefore, the computer is essential to the success of an exploration project using geophysics. For example, aeromagnetics is a common technique for reconnaissance examination of areas associated with sulfide systems and porphyry deposits. An area covering 161 X 161 km (100 X 100 miles) may be flown with a 1.6-km (1-mile) line spacing yielding 10,000 line miles (16,093 km) of data. If only 10 measurements are recorded per mile, 100,000 data points, including location and magnetic field intensity, must be reduced and stored for quantitative interpretation. Computer applications often represent a significant investment in manpower and hardware. It is desirable, therefore, to initiate an engineering approach to the application of computers to geophysics. By this it is meant that computer programs and systems should be formulated, developed, and implemented in a disciplined manner such that their usage is dependent only on the application and not on the individual doing the programming. In other words, computer application, development, and usage should evolve beyond the personal gadget phase to an important applied technology. Geophysics has evolved over the past two decades in a course parallel to computer hardware development. During the sixties, the computer became large enough and fast enough that complex models required by geophysics could be solved. Automation also relieved the geophysicist from routine manual calculations. During the seventies, computing power in¬creased and applications expanded from two-dimensional problems to three-dimensional modeling. Moving into the eighties, as computer hardware costs will significantly decrease, the major expense of computing will be the manpower required to develop, implement, and use an application; therefore, improved programming techniques and applications software engineering methods will be used to optimize and preserve this investment. This chapter presents a general overview of computer methods in geophysical reconnaissance; it is divided into two parts: geophysical methodology and software engineering.

Introduction Most high purity silica is produced from crystalline quartz, generally from sand. However, there is a small area of southern Illinois where a porous, friable white chert rock is found that is very different in physical form from quartz sand. This microcrystalline material, commonly referred to as tripoli, is more easily ground to micron sizes than sand. Although of similar Moh's hardness, microcrystalline tripoli is less abrasive than either ground quartz sand or many synthetic abrasives. Location The southwestern corner of Illinois is underlain by extensive deposits of very porous chert; in some places the material is quite white. Two companies, Illinois Minerals Co. and Tammsco Inc., mine and process this white material. The Illinois Minerals plant is located at Elco, and the Tammsco plant is in Tamms, IL. Both companies mine from various locations within a 10-mile truck haul of their plants. Production from this district has been continuous since at least 1915. Malvern Minerals Co. mines and processes a generally similar microcrystalline, friable novaculite near Hot Springs, AR. Geology The southern Illinois white tripoli area is on the southern flank of the Illinois Basin. The commercial silica zone is a facies of the Clear Creek chert of Lower Devonian Age. To the north, where it occurs deep in the basin, the Clear Creek is a siliceous limestone. In the mining area, thin overburden has allowed access by surface ground water, which has leached away the carbonate content and left a quite pure silica residue. Fossils characteristic of sea bottom deposition, such as brachiopods and trilobites, are occasionally encountered in mining. The structure of the mining area is poorly known, due to infrequent outcrops. Strata in most mines are inclined at dips of 5° to 20°. There appear to be occasional high angle normal and reverse faults, but these are seldom of any significance in mining. The friable white silica zone mined in the Clear Creek chert is overlain by dark brownish-red chert and siliceous shale. Exploration drilling to date has not encountered the base of the microcrystalline tripolitic zone. Chemical content Leaching by ground water solution has removed virtually all the carbonate from the original siliceous limestone. Impurities encountered are red to yellow iron oxides, aluminous clays, and occasional black manganese oxides. The silica has no detectable formula water. A typical chemical analysis and physical properties are listed in Tables 1 and 2. Mineralogy and crystallinity Southern Illinois friable tripoli appears amorphous under the polarizing microscope. No crystal structure and only occasional, vague, patchy anisotropism is evident. However, the material gives an excellent quartz X-ray diffraction pattern. The Jinping-II hydroelectric project in China features four parallel headrace tunnels approximately 18-km- (11-mile-) long. Two will be excavated by tunnel boring machines (TBM) and two by drill-and-blast. A nearby fifth tunnel is being excavated by a 7.2-m (23.6-ft) TBM to draw down ground water in advance of excavating the headrace tunnels. Unique onsite assembly of a 12.43-m (40.7-ft) main beam TBM and backup system was completed on Sept. 18, 2008 in the remote mountains of the Sichuan province. The equipment was assembled onsite, without previously having been assembled and tested in a factory, using a method called onsite first time assembly (OFTA). This paper addresses the following topics: ? Project description including geology and terrain. ? The decision process leading to onsite, first time assembly, the assembly process and logistics, and lessons learned. ? Design features of the TBM and backup system. ? JOHN HAMRIC: Our next topic leader is David Huth, superintendent of sulfuric power generation, DAP, and shipping for IMC-Agrico, Nichols Plant, Mulberry, Florida. With a title like that it's no wonder he believes in empowerment. His topic today is "The Triumphs and Pitfalls of Using Empowerment Techniques." DAVID HUTH: Empowerment and its benefits are a desirable alternative to the traditional management structure. The difference between the two is the amount of decision- making authority and responsibility given to individuals by a supervisor. Just what is empowerment and how does it work? Empowerment is relinquishing to individuals the authority and responsibility to make daily decisions. Can everyone be empowered? What if they make a wrong decision? Will I empower myself out of a job? These are questions that all managers have when they hear the word empowerment. In today's fast-paced and high-pressure business environment, the old way of managing people must be replaced with a new approach. No longer can we, as managers, make all the decisions. The increased work loads due to downsizing, consolidation, and synergies have stretched us too thin. What about our employees? How can we motivate them into the high-performance teams that our companies are demanding? What possibly could satisfy both these issues? The solution to these problems can be solved with the power of employee empowerment. Employee empowerment will not only lessen the load on managers but will build teamwork, motivation, and pride into the employees who work for the managers who use it. American business was rudely awakened in the early 1980s when the Japanese companies not only caught up to American companies but literally flew by them. America was fat, dumb, and happy after World War II. Why wouldn't they be? They had all the factories. Everyone else had to rebuild. So for 40 years American business lounged in the limelight of very little true competition. But times change. Unfortunately, American business did not. Now the cry to perform in the new global economy has come down from the corporate boardrooms. Down through the ranks it has been felt. Guess who is supposed to make it work? Introduction The pressure/vacuum (p/v) lysimeter or soil water sampler has become useful for monitoring vadose zone or unsaturated zone water conditions. The soil water sampler was first introduced around 1961. It was used as a monitoring and research device for studies in agriculture and soil contamination around landfills. Since then, it has been used for many purposes. The use of p/v lysimeters at mining facilities to monitor for solution loss is a relatively new idea. The primary purpose of the lysimeter here is to function as an early warning system. It detects leakage through liners of tailings ponds, heap leach pads, and leachate holding ponds. Their use has proven valuable for collecting baseline data and detecting loss of precious leachate fluid. Different lysimeter designs are capable of vadose moisture sampling from near the surface and down to 90 m (300 ft). They are also capable of sampling soil moisture or saturation plume contaminants from areas not accessible by conventional water well installations. The most common installations are usually simple and cost-effective. In many cases, they can be installed without the use of heavy drilling equipment. A properly placed and installed lysimeter can detect solution leaks in several days or weeks. A conventional perimeter monitor well may take months or years to detect a leak of the same magnitude. A discussion on the general design and installation of p/v lysimeters will give an understanding of its versatility. Three case studies of lysimeter installations at mining sites will be examined in detail. Design, Installation, and Sampling Design The basic design of a p/v lysimeter chamber consists of a porous material through which the soil is drawn into a collection chamber. Access tubes run from the unit to the sample station at the ground surface. Most units currently available range from 25 to 76 mm-diam (1 to 3 in.-diam). The sample collection chamber, or body, can vary from 0.6 to 1.8 m (2 to 6 ft) in length. The body can be constructed of PVC casing or Teflon, depending on the installation desired. The collection chamber functions as a holding reservoir for the collected soil moisture. The intake, or porous material, on the lysimeter is the most complex and vulnerable portion of the unit. The pore size selection varies based on the needs of the installation, type of fluid to be sampled, and type of soil material surrounding the unit. Teflon (PTFE) and porous ceramic are used in fabrication of the porous inlet portion. When using a Teflon material, which is hydrophobic, a larger pore size of 70 µm is needed to overcome surface tension and draw water into the collection chamber. It is typically used at sites involving organic contamination, because of its inert properties. Ceramic material is generally hydrophilic, having less surface tension. Therefore, it has a smaller porosity range to conduct the moisture through the porous medium while under vacuum. Pore sizes may be selected from 0.16 to 6 µm, and can be manufactured for the specific needs of the installation. The final major design component of the p/v lysimeter is the access or sampling tubes. The tubes are usually of 6.3-mm-outside-diam. (0.25-in.-outside-diam). They are made of rigid polyethylene or flexible Tygon with a wall thickness of 1.5 mm (0.06 in.). The con-

The evaporite deposit at Searles Lake consists of alternating brine-saturated saline beds and saline-bearing mud beds. Three major subsurface brine-saturated saline horizons have been identified by private companies and the U.S. Geological Survey. They have been termed, from bottom to top, the Mixed Layer, Lower Salt, and Upper Salt. The important water-soluble components (Na, K, Mg, CO3, HCO3 , SO4, Cl, and B407) are either in brines or have combined to form the following minerals: halite, hanksite, trona, nahcolite, burkeite, borax, thenardite, northupite, sulfohalite, glaserite, etc. Kerr-McGee Chemical Corp., the current operator at the lake, selectively pumps interstitial brines from each of the major horizons to feed its three chemical plants. As the pumping continues, brines are continuously replenished within the deposit by dissolution of the minerals through natural recharge or artificial fluid injection (solution mining). The brines are processed to produce a variety of chemical products, which include sodium carbonate and sulfate, potassium chloride and sulfate, sodium borate, and boric acid. The Anaconda Minerals Co. has been evalua¬ting potential domestic trona acquisition since 1981. We have evaluated various properties in the Green River, Wyoming trona district, and Owens Lake and Searles Lake in southern California. In 1983, we purchased with our joint-venture partner, Leslie Salt Co., the southern portion of Searles Lake from Occidental Petroleum Corp. Since mid-1983, Anaconda has been conduct¬ing a small exploration-drilling program at the property. The initial core holes were drilled along and adjacent to the existing access road. In 1984 we used an all-terrain drill rig to gain access to drill sites on the playa where no roads exist. The use of this equipment proved to be highly successful. The drill program consists of coring to an average depth of 450 feet and collecting brine samples from potentially commercial horizons. The brine samples are collected by setting a packer and swabbing the hole. The core is logged and split lengthwise; one-half is submitted to our Tucson Geoanalytical Laboratory for semi-quantitative mineralogy by X-ray diffraction and the following suite of chemical analyses: Na, K, Mg, C03, HCO3, SO4, Cl, B407, Li, H20 insolubles, and acid insolubles. Additional test work for selected core samples will include effective porosity and horizontal permeability determinations. The brine samples are subjected to the same suite of chemical analyses (minus insolubles) as the core samples. In addition, specific gravity is also determined. Both cross sections and isopach maps are being constructed. The hydrological characteristics of the potentially commercial horizons are also being investigated.

The Calmet Process for extraction and recovery of gold and silver from concentrates and high:grade ores has been a commercial reality for over two years. During that time period, almost seventy-five different concentrate (or ore) types have been processed in approximately 200 separate lots (a total of almost 2000 short tons). During commercial operation of the process at the plant in Fountain, Colorado, recovery of gold and silver into <lore' has averaged almost 93% for gold (range 81-98%) and over 90% for silver (range 76-97%) based on a fire assay target and calculated head values.

The Fortitude skarn near Battle Mountain, NV is currently one of the largest producing gold skarns in the world. It contains about 11 Mt (12 million st) of minable ore grading 5.14 g/t (0.149 oz per st) and is the distal portion of a continuous skarn system in the Copper Canyon area centered on the Eocene Copper Canyon granodiorite porphyry. Calcsilicate compositions, opaque mineralogy, and the high gold grades are atypical of other base metal skarns (iron, Fe; copper, Cu; lead-zinc, Pb-Zn; or tungsten, W). The Copper Canyon skarn is systematically zoned from a garnet (AD 70-100) dominant, pyroxene (HD 20-45) subordinate zone, with major Cu mineralization, adjacent to the intrusive (West ore body), to a pyroxene (HD20-100) dominant, garnet (AD90-100 cores. AD 30-60 rims)subordinate assemblage, with major Au, near the distal marble front (Fortitude ore body). An extensive biotite ± diopsidic pyroxene ± kspar alteration halo surrounds the pyroxene > garnet gold-bearing skarn and represents the early stages of metasomatic alteration. Retrograde alteration is limited in areal extent and intensity, and consists of actinolite, chlorite, quartz, and prehnite. Economic gold mineralization begins in the pyroxene > garnet zone and continues to the marble front, a distance of 1 to 1.5 km (0.6 to 0.9 miles), respectively, from the plutonic contact. The opaque mineralogy in this gold zone includes pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, marcasite, minor chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, argentite, hessite, hedleyite, volnyskite, and native bismuth and gold. The pyrite-pyrrhotite geothermometer yields temperatures that range from 450° C to 300°C (842° F to 582° F) and the electrum-argentite-sphalerite geothermometer yields temperatures which range from 290°C (554° F) at the marble front to about 420°C (788° F) more proximal to the intrusive. Log fS2 calculations from the sulfide assemblages yield values near - 10 with log fO2 values of about -30, in a solution of near neutral pH (5-6). Calculations of metal solubility suggest that the metals were transported as chloride complexes in the proximal skarn but that bisulfide complexes were predominant within the distal gold skarn. Relatively low oxidation states buffered by the carbonaceous to argilliceous, calcareous protolith and subsequent ferrous iron-rich skarn assemblages appear to have increased the gold carrying capacity of this large hydrothermal system.

BRUCE CAVENDER, BHP Copper: Having worked in both places, I&apos;d like to address the issue of the plant versus the corporate office. One thing to keep in mind is that we are all very engaged with the technical elegance of a lot of the work we do. There&apos;s some tremendous technical expertise in the plant. But remember, the guys in the corporate office are only thinking in one denomination, and that&apos;s dollars. So we&apos;ll see something like a spill, and for us it&apos;s a problem. At the end of the day, what the corporation cares about is the financial impact. So we&apos;ve got to be careful to couch our solutions in dollar terms. JIM ARNOLD: Rebuttal? [laughter] DOUG HALBE: Are you going to rebut this one, Andy? ANDY CARTER, Oxidor Gold Corporation: No, I don&apos;t think so. I&apos;m not up to it. I&apos;d just like to address a question both to our panel and the floor. Those of us who&apos;ve been in this industry any length of time have seen these same mistakes made over and over again. Wherever you go, year after year, plant after plant, you see the same problems. I guarantee you, Doug, that if we have a similar conference down the road, you&apos;re going to see the same thing. My question to the panel and to the floor is what is it about our industry that stops us from learning from our mistakes? What characteristic is it that prevents us from learning and makes us repeat the same mistakes over and over again? DOUG HALBE: That&apos;s a great question. Someone said in a meeting 10 years ago that if the people who design plants designed airplanes, the planes would be falling out of the air all the time. GARY SIMMONS, Newmont Gold Company: I&apos;ve got an answer to your question as to why many plants are poorly designed. It&apos;s that the minute anybody demonstrates any sort of competence in plant design, they&apos;re promoted to a higher-paying job, and the talent pool is left with people of lesser experience. Just think about it: The people who have the experience and have demonstrated it more than once have moved up. JIM ARNOLD: I think that there&apos;s another reason, too. Seven or eight years ago I was chairing a session, and I challenged everyone in the session to some day publish an article about the design mistakes they&apos;d made because we never talk about our mistakes. Effective management of ore loss and dilution is essential for successful grade control and short-term mine planning due to their significant impact on the economic, environmental and technical aspects of openpit mining operations. Factors influencing ore loss and dilution fall into two categories: (1) controllable factors, like mine equipment selectivity and blast design, and (2) uncontrollable factors, such as spatial heterogeneity of ore and waste blocks on a bench. This paper focuses on the second category by applying spatial entropy concept to capture heterogeneity at the scale of selective mining units. In this paper, global spatial entropy is used to assess the impact of spatial heterogeneity between ore and waste blocks on the magnitude of ore loss and dilution, while the local spatial entropy can guide the allocation of blast movement monitoring balls preblast. High values of the global spatial entropy indicate increasing potential of ore loss and dilution, which reduce profit. Furthermore, through a number of case studies, the study investigates the relationship between spatial entropy, cutoff grades, blast movement, dig-limits optimization model running time, and profit. The results show that changes in cutoff grade and blast movement can significantly affect spatial entropy post-blasting and increase ore loss, dilution and profit reduction, revealing the need for controlled blasting at specific bench sections. Additionally, the results demonstrate an exponential increase in profit reduction due to ore loss and dilution with a rising global spatial entropy

For some time, selenate has eluded water treatment by conven­tional means such as precipitation and clarification. This has been due to the nearly universal solubility of all oxidized sele­nium species, the low levels required for surface discharge, and almost identical chemical behavior to all forms of oxidized sul­fur. The last characteristic makes selenate particularly difficult to deal with in acid mine waters where sulfate can easily be on the order of one gram per liter. Approaches such as ion exchange or reverse osmosis often tum into total demineraliza­tion schemes for the sake of removing a "trace" selenium species that may be present on the order of 108 sulfate/selenate. Reduction of selenate to selenite or elemental selenium by chemical means has been relatively unresearched. Some limit­ed success has been reported (Murphy, 1988) using ferrous hydroxide as a reducing agent; however, the reaction time as reported is too slow to be useful in a practical plant design. One significant difference between selenate and sulfate is that selenate has been discovered to be reducible in acid solution by elemental iron when catalyzed by soluble copper. Since the +4 or zero valence states of selenium are rather easy to deal with by coprecipitation with iron salts or alum, the elemental iron dis­solved in the process contributes to the overall process by pro­viding sludge upon raising the pH that can be separated by con­ventional clarification. Commercial production of selenium using copper catalyzed reduction of selenite to selenium metal via sulfur dioxide is well established, however, at the < 5 ppb requirements for surface discharge this reduction process equili­brates at levels far too high to be useful to low level selenate removal criteria. The reaction reported herein uses elemental iron for reduction of selenate with copper acting either as a cata­lyst or as a coprecipitation agent. This method, employed with conventional sludging, clarification and filtration can provide an economic method to achieve non detectable selenium (< 0.005 mg/I). Iron consumptions for the conditions tested have been on the order of 3 lbs/1,000 gallons treated. This represents as little as $0.06 or $2.00 per 1,000 gallons based on using a scrap source of iron or the purchase of electrolytic iron for the process.

Previously we reported crushing or grinding crystalline silica results in silica-based free radicals on the particulate surface which can generate hydroxyl radicals in aqueous solution (1). Now we find that freshly ground silica is more cytotoxic to and a more potent activator of alveolar macrophages than similarly sized aged silica. Since the United States Department of Labor estimates that over 1.25 million American workers may be exposed to freshly ground crystalline silica arid nearly 60,000 may be at risk of developing some degree of silica-based occupational lung disease, then this is hardly a trivial problem. Occupations of concern include workers who come in contact with silica including miners of soft and hard minerals, stone quarry workers, glass workers and even millers who stone grind flour. Acute silicosis is manifested by inflammation, alveolar lipo-proteinosis, and the rapid development of respiratory disability that depending on the dose of silica can produce chronic silicosis which takes 20 - 40 years to develop. It is demonstrated by the appearance of concentric hyalinized nodular lesions and progressive development of dyspnea(3). Certainly the free radicals produced on the surface of freshly ground crystalline silica play a most important role in producing the acute and chronic symptoms of silicosis. When respirable-size freshly- ground silica (0.1 -- 5 microns in diameter) enters the deep alveolar spaces in the lung and contacts an aqueous environment, hydroxyl radical are generated and cellular damage is bound to occur. We have found that freshly ground silica can cause lipid peroxidation and lysis of erythrocytes(1). The objective of this investigation was to further elucidate the enhanced toxicity of freshly ground versus aged silica. It can be deduced from the data that not only is freshly ground silica more cytotoxic to alveolar macrophages but it is a more potent stimulant of these phagocytes. However the mere characterization of toxicity is not entirely helpful if there is not a useful means to detoxify the cause of the damage. We have identified an aqueously soluble substance that can be used in high dilution to detoxify the SiO(•) and Si(•) type of free radicals. This is the organosilane known as Prosil 28 (R). We have found that coating of the freshly ground silica can effectively reduce its toxicity. The importance of this observation is that such a coating could be used with water cooled drills. This may partially detoxify silica at the point of generation of the free radical, i.e., the generation of the fresh silica dust itself. Such a coating could be used in great dilution 1:103 or 1:104. The coating would be long lasting, inexpensive and should be non-toxic because of the great dilution.

Wide use of adsorption methods for metal recovery is one of the most important achievements of gold metallurgy of the last decades. Anion exchange resins or activated carbons may be used as adsorbents. This paper presents a brief overview of IRGIREDMET effotts on development, testing and implementation of techno­logical flowsheets using both adsorbent types and attempt to compare their technological properties. IRGIREDMET Institute was founded in 1871 as a laboratory for gold smelting and gold ore testing. In 1930 it obtained the status of the Research Institute. IRGIREDMET functioned as leading research center for gold mining industry in the former Soviet Union. At present it is the Open Joint Stock Company dealing with all s01t of research and design works for gold min­ing (ranging from geology to gold refinery). IRGIREDMET started development of ion exchange technol­ogy in 19641• The first stage of work (1964-1970) including development of principle flowsheet of RIP process was carried out jointly with the Moscow VNIIKHT Institute (All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Chemical Technology)2• The flowsheet of RIP process is presented in Fig. I and includes the following basic operations: gold adsorption from pulp; washing of loaded resin; acid treatment; thiourea adsorp­tion; gold elution by acid thiourea solution; resin washing to remove thiourea; alkaline treatment of resin; resin washing and gold recovery from eluates by electrowinning. The technology developed and equipment used were tested for treatment of clayey ore of Kuranakh deposit at a pilot plant of the Lebedinsky gold complex ("Aldanzoloto" company, Yakutia, Russia). The pilot plant throughput was 200 t/day. At the same time IRGIREDMET conducted the tests on ion exchange technology for ore and concentration products of oper­ating gold plants and for ores of new deposits. Laboratory and pilot plant tests were done and developed initial data and process design criteria for designing of 15 plans of the former Soviet Union. In the course of this work a great number of newly synthe­sized anion exchangers including strong and weak base resins was studied, the peculiarities of anion exchange resins using two different raw material types ( ores and concentrates includ­ing clayey, carbonaceous, silver bearing, arsenic, antimony and base metals bearing products); some theoretical regularities of adsorption process were investigated; the technology of two stage adsorption of gold and silver from silver gold ore, improved flowsheet for gold elution and resin regeneration, design of adsorption equipment including pulsation columns, design of electrowinning cells were developed; conditioning technology for pulp with complex ion composition prior to gold and silver adsorption was developed, etc.3·8• IRGIREDMET specialists took part in commissioning of practically all the plants in the former Soviet Union using RIP and RIL process including Lebedinsky, Kuranakh, Sovetsky, Karamken, Matrosov's plant and Mnogovershinny plants. Due to this works RIP process became standard technology for Russia and the CIS.

BP neural network is a multilayer feedforward network trained by error back-propagation algorithm, which is one of the most widely used neural network models. However, BP neural network has exposed more and more shortcomings and deficiencies with the expansion of the application scope. In the prediction of ore quantity, BP neural network has the characteristics of slow convergence and easy to fall into local minimum point. In order to obtain the global optimal solution, and to improve the defects of BP neural network, this paper proposes combination optimization algorithm of genetic algorithm (GA) and BP neural network to improve the speed and accuracy of forecasting the main design flow chart and the analysis of the sort distinguish algorithm are offered, and then some problem in the design and debugging of the algorithm are discussed. On this basis, the GA-BP neural network model is constructed and applied to optimize the initial weights and threshold value of BP neural network. This model choices the floating point coding method to encode the connection weights and thresholds, and divides subjects into several populations. Through the introduction of selection, mutation, crossover, initial weight and other operators, making operational synergies between the various groups. This study selects 30 geological units, 8 quantitative variables (Pb, Zn, Cu, Mo, Si, Ni, Co, V) and 12 qualitative variables to carry out empirical analysis. Then the simulation of the algorithm is carried out in MATLAB and the parameters are analysed. By normalizing the input samples, 22 groups of observation data are used as the training data for prediction, and the latter 8 groups of observation data are used as the test data to be verified. The results show that when the ore quantity characteristics are not very significant, the model will produce prediction bias. But the improvement of the algorithm increases the efficiency of the function approach capacity of BP neural network and conquer the BP neural network system’s instability. It provides an auxiliary guide for ore prediction, which have higher reference value.

Maintenance and inventory are usually the last items considered in mine development. They need to be addressed properly and early. The micro-computer brings sophistication within the reach of even the smallest mines. Maintenance and inventory programs, if properly installed, will reduce costs 15 to 25% and allow management time to address the mining and metallurgical problems at start up. Shops and warehouses are rarely designed properly. Large engineering firms spend 5 to 20 times more than is necessary for first class facilities. There is an optimum design, size, and layout. Take the time necessary to assure you get the right people, programs, and facilities in that order. Maintenance, inventory, and inventory control must be addressed early if a small mine is to have a chance at optimizing costs during the first two years of operation. This is hard work and is usually put on the back burner until the mine is in some degree of trouble. Hiring an experienced maintenance superintendent is important but it is not the complete solution. Maintenance systems, design of facilities, and use of computers are not skills that maintenance people usually have. In addition, the work of ordering spare parts and working with erection people is a full time job and any maintenance people on site during construction are quickly recruited. The end result is that few mines start up with an adequate Maintenance or Inventory System in place. The months, and in some cases years, that the mine attempts to operate without a system are both painful and expensive. Designs of successful integrated maintenance and inventory programs are virtually 100% supported with some outside assistance. Our system is the approach that we are most familiar with and this paper will isolate how Rushton International would go about setting up systems and designing support facilities. Micro-computers are the only way for a small mine to go. ~ini-computers cost more originally and operating costs are many times higher than even the most sophisticated micro system. Micro- computer software is developed further and recent advances in hardware makes medium priced units equal to most mini&apos;s in RAW COMPUTER POWER. Introduction Americans have long been proud of their ability to recognize a need, define it, and then develop workable solutions. The U.S. underground coal conversion (UCC) program is a good example. In 1974, the need to utilize coal resources that could not be mined was recognized, and Congress gave the Bureau of Mines $1.7 million to gain a better understanding of the UCC technology and its potential applications. Since 1977 when the U.S. Dept. of Energy (DOE) was formed, workable technologies have been tested, the market for underground coal conversion has been recognized, and extensive industrial interest has developed. Perspective The U.S. is blessed with extensive coal resources. Coal supplies about 19% of our national energy needs, yet recently promulgated environmental standards and increasing mining costs have limited direct coal use. UCC potentially can use coal that is economically or technically infeasible to mine because the coal is too thick, deep, dirty, high-ash, and wet; has an excessive angle of dip; or has unpredictable and poor overburden characteristics that make mining unsafe. Coal can be gasified underground or perhaps liquefied below the earth’s surface. Underground coal gasification (UCG) is the prime element of the underground coal conversion program. It enables coal to be converted to gas underground. UCC Coal Resource Recent data show a total U.S. coal resource base of about 6.4 trillion tons. Of this, 1.8 trillion tons might be accessed by UCC, including some minable coal. A commercial UCC process could quadruple roughly the 450 billion tons of U.S. coal reserves, which presently are recoverable by mining. The U.S. coal resources are divided into five sectors. The two most eastern sectors contain relatively thin, swelling bituminous coals that are difficult to gasify. Of the two, the bituminous coal in the Eastern Province is the most difficult because it is deeper than , in the Interior Province and the terrain is more rugged. The sector along the Rocky Mountains contains huge amounts of thick low-rank coals that are the most promising for early development by UCC. The coal has good continuity and the terrain is suitable. Low-rank coals such as subbituminous and lignite are highly reactive and tend to shrink and disaggregate when heated. Most of the coal in the Pacific

Most mining companies today perform site assessments and operational or compliance audits regularly. The purpose of these audits is to review company facilities and operations to determine whether they comply with applicable federal, state and local environmental laws and regulations. Why Audit? Companies adopt assessment and audit programs for legal and business reasons. The business reasons include: (1) ensuring efficient and cost-effective compliance through early problem identification and resolution; (2) planning and implementing business transactions such as real estate conveyances, loans, mergers and acquisitions, and waste disposal service contracts; and (3) employee training and relations. Legal reasons for audits include: (1) avoiding enforcement actions and penalties; (2) meeting environmental permit certification requirements; (3) avoiding corporate officer liability; and (4) meeting Security and Exchange Commission disclosure requirements. The Environmental Protection Agency ("EPA") encourages environmental auditing by regulated entities. The EPA Environmental Auditing Policy Statement was published in the Federal Register on July 9, 1986 (51 Fed Reg 25,004). Although the existence of an auditing program does not create a defense to or otherwise limit a company&apos;s regulatory responsibilities, EPA considers compliance programs in setting inspection and enforcement priorities. If a company makes an honest effort to identify and correct its own problems, EPA&apos;s enforcement approach is influenced, especially if violations are promptly reported. Perhaps more significant to many executives, the U.S. Department of Justice issued guidelines last year on when it will pursue criminal prosecution for environmental violations. See Department of Justice, "Factors and Decisions on Criminal Prosecutions for Environmental Violations in the Context of Significant Voluntary Compliance or Disclosure Efforts by the Violator," (July 1, 1991). It is now commonplace to read about major companies pleading guilty to criminal violations and paying millions of dollars in penalties. For example ALCOA recently agreed to pay criminal fines and civil penalties totaling $7.5 million for unauthorized excavation of PCB-contaminated soil and improper dumping of spent caustic solution. No executive wants to explain to the Board of Directors or shareholders why the company was criminally indicted. The Department of Justice considers factors such as voluntary disclosure, preventive measures and compliance programs, such as a regular compliance auditing program, the effectiveness of the disciplinary system for employees who violate the company&apos;s environmental policies, and subsequent compliance efforts by companies to remedy ongoing noncompliance. The Department of Justice looks closely at whether audit recommendations were implemented in a timely way and whether environmental compliance was a standard by which employees were judged. The Lawyer&apos;s Role. The role of the lawyer in an audit team deserves special attention. When enforcement action or litigation has begun or is contemplated or a government agency has asked for information, attorneys always should be directly involved in environmental audits. In most situations, however, environmental audits are management tools, and the attorney&apos;s role should be to advise the team. Canadian sylvinites contain over 90% of KCl and NaCl and a few percent of water-insoluble minerals. Cationic flotation is used to produce KCl concentrates. Since water-insoluble minerals appear in the pulp as slimes, and since long-chain primary amines are utilized as a collector, desliming is essential. The potash industry utilizes different desliming methods. This may involve selective flocculation of the slimes with polyacrylamide and removal of the flocculated product by flotation, or mechanical desliming with the use of classifying cyclones. Whichever method is applied, desliming is never complete; the flotation feed after desliming still contains about one percent of the slimes which heavily affect collector consumption and flotation selectivity. Therefore, the remaining slimes have to be rendered inactive by “blinding” them with polymers such as carboxymethyl cellulose or guar gum. The commercial blinders used by the potash industry include natural and synthetic polysaccharides. The most common is the use of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and guar gum (GG). These are quite different polymers, while CMC is anionic, GG is non-ionic; while the applied CMCs are of relatively low molecular weight (about 300,000) GGs have much higher molecular weight. Guar gums are also heavily used as the depressants of naturally floatable gangue in the processing of platinum-bearing ores, and according to Harris et al. (1999) quite a large variety of modified guar gums are available in South Africa for this application. Cheng et al. (2002) claim that natural guar gum’s molecular weight is 1.935 • 106. Robinson et al. (1982) found that the molecular weights of five grades of commercial guar gums ranged from 4.4 • 105 to 16.5 • 105. The highest molecular weight sample is then very close to the natural guar gum studied by Cheng et al. (2002). According to the manufacturer, the Rantec KP4000 guar gum which is used by the Canadian potash industry has a molecular weight of about 1.5 x 106. Since both KCl and NaCl are soluble in water, the flotation process is carried out in saturated brine. At 20 oC, 1450 kg of NaCl-KCl-H2O saturated solution contains about 0.300 kg of NaCl, 0.150 kg of KCl, and 1 kg of water (Gaska et al., 1965). Thus, in the saturated NaCl-KCl brine there are about 5.1 kmole of NaCl and 2 kmole KCl per 55.5 kmole of water. This gives 3.9 molecules of water per each ion assuming complete dissociation of NaCl and KCl. Thus, it is obvious that all water molecules in the saturated brine must be bound in the hydration shells around the hydrated ions. The surface tension of the NaCl-KCl saturated brine was recently measured to be 85 mN/m (Laskowski et al., 2003).
