Peña Colorada is a company dedicated to the exploration, exploitation, and beneficiation of iron ore, serving the national steel industry. Established in 1975 as a stateowned enterprise, it transitioned to operating as a private organization in 1991. It is jointly owned by two investors, ArcelorMittal and Ternium, each holding a 50% stake. The mining operation is situated in the municipality of Minatitlan, in the northwestern part of the state of Colima, Mexico (Figure 1). It comprises an open pit mine and a concentrator, covering an area of approximately 2,300 hectares. The pellet mill is in the town of Manzanillo, Colima state, a port on the Pacific coast, about 46 km southwest of the mine. The pellet mill occupies its own property with a total area of 60.4 hectares. A gravity-driven concentrated slurry pipeline connects the mine and the pelletizing plant, located at an average elevation of 1,020 meters above sea level and 20 meters above sea level, respectively. Currently, Peña Colorada produces 4.1 million tons of pellets and 0.4 million tons of iron concentrate annually. In 2018, due to a change in the cutoff grade, the processing volume of the beneficiation plant increased from 9 million tons to 16 million tons annually. This led to a greater amount of information to process and characterize the ore extracted from the pit before its processing in the beneficiation plant. Consequently, Peña Colorada sought new ore control technologies to enhance ore selection, optimize human resources and data management, as well as minimize discrepancies between planning and execution. To ensure adherence to quality agreements with stakeholders, it is crucial to understand the ore characteristics before initiating mining activities.

On average, one to two fatalities occur every year when a miner is struck or pinned by a continuous mining machine (CMM). Proximity detection systems offer an effective means to prevent these types of injuries and fatalities by sensing the presence of a miner and automatically disabling machine motion. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) is expected to finalize a regulation that would require the use of proximity detection systems on all CMMs. Approximately one-fourth of all CMMs in use in the United States are already equipped with such a system. The use of these systems will save lives, not only by automatically preventing accidents but also by acting as a tool for educating miners and reinforcing safe work practices. Researchers at the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) have conducted a series of field evaluations to quantify the performance of these systems in an underground coal environment. These field evaluations measured the distance at which the warning and stop zones were activated. The technology provided consistent activation of the warning and stop zones under many of the conditions tested. However, some performance inconsistencies were observed which present opportunities to improve the reliability of proximity detection system technology. Some of the notable variables that caused significant changes in performance and should be considered in the design, implementation, and use of proximity detection systems include interaction with the trailing cable, performance changes during tramming, and orientation of the miner-worn component.

Surface and underground mining operations are often hindered by unknown tunnels and stopes and the precise locations of adjacent workings. Mine safety and planning are adversely affected especially in previously undermined areas where historical records are incomplete or non-existent. The results of several Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) studies for the detection of known mine tunnels in underground coal; salt, and gold mines are presented. A case study to locate unknown, abandoned mine workings at a surface gold mine successfully located all workings to a depth of 11 meters.

"During construction of a 9.5-ft. diameter sanitary sewer tunnel, the City of Edmonton encountered a large pocket of flowing sand that flooded their TBM and caused significant surface subsidence, stopping further tunneling by the TBM through this zone. A unique collaborative effort ensued between the authors representing the city, consulting engineers and academic researchers to develop the optimal strategy for grouting the problematic soils. The site has a layer of very find sand between 20 and 30 ft. in depth with fines contents ranging from 5% to more than 40%. The collaboration extended from requesting additional site investigation efforts to shipping samples to the UT-Austin laboratories for grout testing plus ground and grouting characterization tests resulting in field recommendations for a full scale ground improvement program. New research information on the grouting of fine sands along with a collaborative framework for the design of in-situ grouting projects are the key topics presented. INTRODUCTION Encountering a large unexpected pocket of flowing sand with an open-faced TBM while excavating a tunnel below the groundwater table is never a good thing. This was certainly true for the City of Edmonton when one of their Lovat TBM’s became inundated by flowing sand while excavating the 9.5-ft. diameter Millwoods Double Barrel Replacement Tunnel in September 2013. However, since the City of Edmonton self-performed this work, a rare situation existed where the site could be investigated objectively, without the prejudice of contending parties selectively influencing how information was gathered and presented, to accurately examine site conditions with a goal of identifying the best remediation measures."

"The history of the mining industry is littered with in-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC), which should not be confused with the International Protocol for Carbon Capture, projects that failed. The failure is not the technical one of “did it achieve the desired tonnage rate for a longish test period” but, rather, the far more important one of “did it provide return on the investment in the manner that was promised?” While quite a few can claim the former, very few system installations can claim the latter.The reasons for the many failures are numerous, but they are all characterized by a combination of an element of engineering optimism in any, or all of the production rates, the productivity, or the operating and maintenance costs and in predicting the continuity of operating conditions. In these days of big data, propagating such a situation is rapidly becoming unforgivable.In this article, the three most common scenarios put to the corporate board for approval, and the logic as to why they were selected, are examined (with the irony included intentionally).• Fully mobile crusher, fed by a shovel and conveyed out of the pit to a waste dump / process plant.• Semimobile crusher (much more expensive than a fixed crushing station but which apparently allows trucks to short haul inside the pit and improve productivity), which moves when the face moves.• Relocatable crusher (more expensive than a fixed crushing station but which gets relocated at great expense after all the fixed infrastructure impeding relocation is demolished) fed by trucks that don’t leave the pit mostly.This paper will also consider the truth about their operational performance and associate costs."

One possible alternative for disposal of flue gas desulfurization (FGD) by-products is use as backfilling support material in highwall mine adits. The finite element method was used to analyze the variation of stresses and displacements within and around a highwall adit backfilled with FGD materials. The engineering properties of the rock material and the optimum mix proportioning of the FGD materials were obtained from laboratory tests. Finite element analyses show that, for the case in question, the roof displacement would decrease about 48 percent and the peak stress could be decreased about 58 percent. The study indicates that fairly weak FGD materials can eventually lead to stability of backfilled highwall adits.

"INTRODUCTION The design, development, fabrication, and test of cryogenic breathing apparatus is part of a much larger effort funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and managed through a Space Act Agreement with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida. This effort is designed to create cryogenically based life support equipment that is responsive to the needs of miners as required by the Miner Act of 2006. Our goal was to design and build a liquid air based self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) that lasted 2 hours and would be used for the egress of miners during a mining accident and be refillable while worn. Therefore, the current report describes tests of an Advanced Cryogenic Breathing Apparatus (termed the ACryoBA) designed to provide miners egressing an emergency situation with a two-hour open-circuit SCBA. The ACryoBA utilizes low pressure cryogenic liquid air instead of high pressure compressed air commonly used in most commercially available SCBA. The ACryoBA can also be self-filled from strategically placed Cryogenic Air Supply and Fill Stations (CryoASFS) initially, and thereafter on the egress route approximately every 1 hour and 30 minutes with a 30 minute air reserve. The ACryoBA evolved originally from a one hour Liquid Air Pack (LAP) developed in the 1980’s for Space Shuttle Rescue forces allowing for longer duration and cool air (Figure 1). It was used successfully for many years, through the end of the Space Shuttle Program. The first attempt at a mine egress pack was the Cryogenic Breathing Apparatus (Figure 2). It was to have a low profile, two hours of breathing, attitude independence, and a simple rapid refill while in use. The CryoBA met the two hour criteria, but with difficulty due to excessive heat leakage caused by the dual 4 liter Dewar design. Much of the stored air was lost as it vaporized faster than it could be used. However, the pack was successful in demonstrating both attitude independence and a simple rapid refill capability. The ACryoBA project was designed to continue the progression and address the deficiencies in the CryoBA. The ACryoBA pack was designed to last 2 hours. It minimizes the heat leakage with a single Dewar and thereby requires less liquid air. The single Dewar design also minimizes weight, making it much more manageable by the user (Figure 3). The ACryoBA complies with 42 CFR part 84 NIOSH certification test requirements. One critical requirement for the ACryoBA is operation in positions other than vertical for periods up to 1/4 (i.e. 30 minutes) of the rated service life of 2 hours; this was accomplished by use of new technology called the “attitude independent pickup” which is abbreviated “AIP.” The AIP, developed by BCS Life Support LLC (patent #8,899,226), has a tube going from the top flange down through the center of the Dewar. At the end it has a flexible bellows and a weighted end. Due to the flexible nature of the bellows, the pickup at the end is free to rotate and follow the liquid level around within +/- 90o of vertical."

Real-time GPS position monitoring of mining equipment is becoming more and more commonplace. Digital mining plans can now be used onboard properly equipped earthmoving equipment and excavation status is available in real-time via high bandwidth data radio systems. These systems provide a closely integrated link between operations and planning. No longer must operations wait for or be hindered by insufficient survey marks, nor is engineering delayed by lack of timely mine status information. Unprecedented efficiency gains become feasible -from the engineering office, to drilling and mucking, to reclamation, as well as in mine construction projects. Direct economic benefits of these systems will be explored as will the less tangible, but very significant, indirect operational efficiency gains.

Compliance standards for respirable dust which are reduced because of high quartz concentrations have become an industry-wide problem. Research on the physical and chemical character of quartz-classified particles in respirable coal mine dusts indicates that they may exist in intermixed layers or may be coated by clay or coal material. The relative amount of intermixing varies with the coal seam being mined. If most of the quartz particles of a mine dust are "pure," then the dust may have a high fibrogenic risk potential because of truly free silica and the compliance standard should be lowered. If, however, the quartz is locked inside another material matrix, or coated, a reduced compliance standard may not be appropriate.

In recent years, a great deal of effort has been put into automating mining equipment with the goal of improving worker health and safety and increasing mine productivity. Significant progress has been made in automating mining equipment such as load-haul-dumps and drills in underground environments where global positioning systems are unavailable. This paper addresses automating the task of positioning the shuttle-car (SC) under the continuous-miner (CM) coaldischarge conveyor during cutting and loading operations. A stereo depth camera is mounted on the SC. Machine learning based algorithms are applied on the camera’s output to identify the CM discharge conveyor and segment the scene into various regions such as roof, ribs, and personnel. This information is used to plan the shuttle car path to the CM discharge conveyor. The approach currently uses a 1/6th scale continuous miner and shuttle car in an appropriately scaled mock mine

Today, I want to challenge this audience by charging each of you to be a greater manager and superior engineer to manage and engineer our way through the 1980's and profitably overcome all the present and proposed government regulations. May of the present and proposed regulations will tax you and your company's management and engineering to the brink of physical and monetary exhaustion, but I believe we can succeed and coal can be America's answer to her hungry energy needs. To put our 1980's challenge into perspective, I want to give two great challenges we must overcome. First - We must improve on our process of compliance to new government regulations in the technical and equipment end of our industry. The Lord said, "Let There Be Light". MSHA said, "Let there be light in underground coal mines". Since that time, we have lived through an unmanageable and tremendously costly period of compliance.

Recent research has shown that enhanced gravity separators provide the opportunity to effectively clean I mm x 37 micron coal. At Southern Illinois University, a detailed experimental program was performed on a continuous Falcon Concentrator, which was found to achieve separations at mass throughput capacity values in excess of 100 tonnes/hour. The apparent particle separation density for I mm x 73 micron coal was about 1.60 with relatively high efficiency (Ep = 0.12). Typical ash and sulfur rejection values of 85% and 70%, respectively, were achieved while recovering 85% of the combustible material. Metallurgical and efficiency data from the evaluation are presented in this publication.

In August 1996 Barrick Gold Corporation acquired the Pierina property, an advanced stage exploration project, high in the Andean Cordillera of Peru and in November 1998, in a record time of just over two years, poured the first gold. After more than three years of a very successful operation at some of the lowest operating costs in the world, this presentation serves to briefly describe the project through design, construction and start-up and in particular to spotlight some of the challenges that have been overcome in valley heap leaching in a high rainfall, alpine setting.

The Office of Coal Research has been supporting the development of processes for producing synthetic pipeline gas from coal since 1964. .Some of this work has also been jointly supported by the American Gas Association. The work has progressed through laboratory investigation, to bench scale, to pilot plant. It was far from a crash program, generally being fund-limited.. As of one year ago, we had reached the following position: 1. The Institute of Gas Technology HYGAS. process pilot plant in Chicago, Illinois, was in the process of being finally completed. This plant is designed to produce about 1,500,000 cubic feet of pipeline-quality gas per day from 75 tons of coal. 2. The Consolidation Coal Company, CO2 Acceptor Process pilot plant in Rapid City, South Dakota, was well._ on its way to completion. This plant, designed primarily for lignite and subbituminous coals, has about one-half the design capacity of the HYGAS plant. Additionally, the initial construction did not provide for cleanup and methanation; only the preliminary synthesis gas is produced. 3. The Bituminous Coal Research, Inca, BI-GAS pilot plant was in a preliminary design stage. A site had been selected near Homer City, Pennsylvania, to build this plant, planned to consume 120 tons of coal per day. Meanwhile, as you are all well aware, a natural gas shortage was developing in this country. Much has been published about it, so I will not. bother you with further details. Central Water Integration Project (CWIP) Segment 5-1 is the most critical segment of a regional water supply project that transfers groundwater from Burleson County to northern San Antonio, replacing over 20% of that City’s water supply with a new source. CWIP Segment 5-1 included three tunnel reaches totaling 10,350-ft and 5 shafts that were constructed inside the City in an area known to contain large karst features. This paper describes site work used to investigate the alignment for karst features, manage potential environmental impacts, develop the contract package required for mitigation and the means and methods used to mitigate the large karst features that were encountered.

A new coal interface detection (CID) method is under investigation by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. This novel concept is based on utilizing a passive infrared system (FIR) to measure temperature changes associated with the cutting of coal and adjacent strata. For this method to work successfully, a definite mechanical/hardness contrast must exist between coal and rock. Advantages include that FIR responds instantaneously at the coal-rock interface and it is minimally affected by dust and/or water sprays. Based on preliminary tests, results indicate that the PIR method can be applied successfully in mines having a hard immediate roof.

This study aimed to identify a way to reduce the use of bentonite in the pelletization of magnetite. With this goal, different combinations of binders were compared to bentonite by examining the quality of pellets obtained by balling drum agglomeration. Pellets were subjected to routine tests that included simple compression of the wet and dry 105°C pellets, dropping wet pellets to determine their ability to survive handling and submitting pellets to thermal shock to determine how they tolerate drying and preheating. The best results use sodium silicate (1.5%) as a binder and show that it is possible to pelletize iron ore without using bentonite.

"Pareto analysis was used to investigate the failures database of a Hitachi EX1900 hydraulic shovel over one year of continuous operation. The hydraulic system and hydraulic links, hoses and piping were identified as the most critical system and subsystem, respectively. A three-parameter gamma distribution function was identified as the best fit for a probabilistic modeling of the time between failures (TBFs). This distribution was used in a Monte Carlo reliability analysis of the hydraulic system. Autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA), within the context of a time series analysis of the TBFs, was proposed as a viable alternative to the traditional technique of distribution fitting. The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) metric was used to compare the two models. The MAPE value that resulted from the ARIMA was 66 percent smaller than that from the traditional technique in predicting the TBFs.Resumen ¦ Se usó análisis Pareto para investigar la base de datos de fallas de una pala hidráulica Hitachi EX1900 durante un periodo de un año de operación continua. Se identificó una función de distribución de tres parámetros gamma como el más apto para un modelado de probabilidades del tiempo transcurrido entre las fallas (Tabes por sus siglas en inglés). Esta distribución fue usada en un análisis de confiabilidad Monte Carlo para un sistema hidráulico. El promedio de movimiento integrado auto-regresivo (ARIMA por sus siglas en inglés), dentro del contexto de análisis de serie temporal de los TBFs, fue propuesto como una alternativa viable a la tradicional técnica de ajuste de distribución. Se usó el porcentaje de la media absoluta de error (MAPE) para comparar los dos modelos. Nassau County, New York, is undertaking several projects to improve the water quality in the Western Bays of Long Island. A major step forward will be the completion of the Bay Park Conveyance Project, which will divert most treated effluent away from the Western Bays to an existing ocean outfall at the Cedar Creek Water Pollution Control Plant. The ongoing works include 3.6 miles of microtunneling, 7 miles of sliplining, 14 shafts, and a 75 MGD pump station. This paper provides an overview of the design and an update on construction progress through December 2022. The project is a collaborative effort between Nassau County, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the design-builder, and various consultants.
