Detailed examination of the Sloan Ranch diamond prospect has shown that the Sloan 1 diatreme, the Sloan 2 dike, and the Sloan 3 horizontal sheet complex are all parts of the same kimberlite complex. Geologic mapping, geophysics, soil chemistry, test pitting, and drilling all helped to delineate the structure. Bulk sample testing yielded moderate grades with encouraging gem-to-industrial ratios, but no large stones were recovered. These test results, along with supporting mineral chemistry data, suggest that the Sloan Ranch complex is analogous to sub- economic occurrences located near the margins of the Archean cratons in southern Africa.

Mine site managers reported occurrences of locking assembly bolt failures on the Enlow Fork Coal Mine's slope belt conveyor. The observations were made after a number of years of operation and raised questions as to the status of the assemblies in operation. These questions prompted a detailed review of the situation by independent consultants. Using operational history of the conveyor and confirmation of belt loads by static and dynamic methods, a locking assembly fatigue curve was created to suggest expected service life. From this work, suggestions were made to modify the pulley assemblies for extended service life.

Two low water flux test covers were placed on acid generating waste rack dumps at the Kidston Gold Mine in Queensland, Australia The climate is semi arid with distinct wet/dry seasons. The present study was initiated to develop a cover system to restrict infiltration. The design of the cover required optimization of water storage and evapotranspiration. Instrumentation was installed on both dumps to measure infiltration, moisture conditions and climatic parameters. Field measurements over the last three years indicate that both covers are performing satisfactorily. Selection of the final cover for closure is described on the basis of these results.

This paper presents the process methods of beneficiating various copper-cobalt and copper-zinc ores mined by Gecamines in Zaire. Geology and mineralization of both sedimentary and vein-type deposits are described with special emphasis on the production of oxide, dolomitic and sulfide concentrates. Description of different types of concentrators and their treatment methods are discussed for the production of sulfide, oxide and dolomitic concentrates. Production of concentrates, their consumption and stocks are briefly reviewed. Modernization of the concentrators with substantial investments on grinding, classification, flotation methods and tailings treatments are also discussed and to improve the metallurgical efficiency of 'the concentrators to improve the production quality and quantity of concentrates.

An integrated statistical-geostatistical modelling of gold exploration data of Gurahar Pahar prospect of Mahakoshal greenstone belt in Central India has been attempted. Statistical modelling of gold accumulation and width reveal a positively skewed 2-parameter lognormal distribution fit with an estimate of mean gold as 0.84 gram/tonne. Geostatistical modelling provided a spherical semi-variogram function fit with mean kriged estimate and mean kriging variance of gold as 0.76 gram/tonne and 0.23 (gram/tonne)2 -respectively. Ore inventory and grade-tonnage relationships for a selected part provided an estimate of 3,36,000 tomes of ore with an average gold of 0.76 gram/tonne at 0.5 gram/tonne cutoff grade.

The proper modeling of granular flow using discontinuum mechanics has the potential to be one of the most significant scientific advancements in the mining industry today. This paper will examine the status of discrete element technology, specifically focusing on current and future applications. The fundamentals of the Discrete Element Method (DEM) will be briefly introduced, as well as relevant design parameters. Various types of granular flow problems currently being solved using the DEM methodology will be presented. The results and potential benefits of these cases will also be discussed. All simulation results and figures used throughout this paper are from studies and designs preformed by the DEM group at Conveyor Dynamics, Inc. (CDI).

The U.S. Bureau of Mines examined bleederless ventilation practices to evaluate their use as a spontaneous combustion control measure in U. S. coal mines. Results indicate that restricting airflow into mined-out areas (bleederless ventilation) is recognized worldwide as a spontaneous combustion control measure. However, ventilation practices commonly used to limit airflow to mined-out areas are not easily applicable to United States mining conditions, systems, experience and regulations. The types of bleederless ventilation systems used throughout the world and the spontaneous combustion risks associated with these systems are discussed. Primary design considerations for bleederless ventilation consist of the interaction of ventilation practices, methane drainage, ground control, seal construction and mine monitoring. Technological improvements needed for U.S. application of bleededess ventilation are also discussed.

The problem of long-term production scheduling in an underground coal mine is approached through the concepts of sequencing theory. Based on a typical layout of mining sections, the principles for the approach are: 1. The definition of mining sections as jobs, and mining methods as machines. 2. The reduction of the overall mining activity to the general problem of nonpreemptive scheduling of precedence related jobs on parallel machines. 3. The simplification of the layout to a general type directed network with the nodes representing jobs and the arcs representing precedence relations. 4. The determination of a feasible and near-optimal job schedule given the objective of maximizing the total net present value of the jobs. A general scheduling heuristic is being developed for implementation on an IBM personal computer (PC) as part of an interactive computer system for long-term production planning.

And sometimes even that did not work. But, like other downturns in the industry, this latest dismal copper market allowed technology to make further inroads into mining and processing operations. A cyclone reactor system for the partial reduction and melting of taconite concentrate fines has been engineered, designed and operated. A non-transferred arc plasma torch was employed as a heat source. Taconite fines, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide were fed axially into the reactor, while the plasma gas was introduced tangentially into the cyclone. The average reactor temperature was maintained at above 1673 K (1400 C), and reduction experiments were performed under various conditions. The influence of the following parameters on the reduction of taconite was investigated: carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide inlet feed ratio, carbon monoxide inlet partial pressure, and average reactor temperature. The interactions of the graphite lining with carbon dioxide and taconite were also studied.

Dravo Lime Company has opened a new 290m (940 ft.) deep lime-stone mine near Maysville, Kentucky. As the mine was opened there were many unknowns as to the stress relationships within the rock, and their influence, if any, on the selected mining method. Therefore, a system of overlay geologic and structural maps, borehold extenso-meter measurements, and oriented photography was developed for the purposes of monitoring the internal structural relationships of the rock mass. This paper presents a description of the methods used, the observations made, and the conclusions and recommendations made as a result of the initial monitoring program.

The existing Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel complex is being expanded to include the Parallel Thimble Shoal Tunnel. This will be a subaqueous bored crossing between two islands constructed for the original 1960s immersed-tube tunnel. Jet grouting was employed by the Chesapeake Tunnel Joint Venture (CTJV) to provide watertight base plugs, launch and retrieval blocks for the tunnel boring machine (TBM), a TBM canopy to limit ground movement, and a retaining wall to enable off-island excavation: all within hydraulically placed sands. This paper will review the design and construction challenges, including soil permeability and recharge, grout communication, installed grout strengths, and remediation requirements.

Underground blasting has many challenges. The primary aim of blast designers is to optimize drilling and blasting parameters to deal with the associated challenges. Optimizing these parameters is currently based on various rules of thumb, which have many site-specific limitations. Accordingly, computation of these parameters using empirical rock fragmentation predictors can be useful for blast designers. This paper presents the results of work on burden-spacing determination by back-calculation from the empirical Kuz-Ram model for underground stope ring blasting.

A simplified two-dimensional model to analyze time-dependent load distribution and surface subsidence associated with longwall mining geometries is described. The model is based on the theory of beams resting on inelastic foundations and includes visco-elastic behavior of immediate floor strata, non-linear behavior of coal pillars, elastic behavior of face supports, and visco-elastic behavior of the overburden strata. The relative importance of the different variables affecting the performance of longwall mining geometries from ground control point of view is also analyzed. The model has been validated for field observations from one Illinois longwall mine.

INTRODUCTION Geotechnical investigations for tunneling projects typically use vertical test borings and, to a lesser extent, angled borings. Horizontal drilling applications were often limited to specialty testing programs and to perform probe drilling from a tunnel boring machine (TBM) as part of production tunneling. The former often involved cumbersome setups with skid rigs and cribbing in a pilot tunnel or shaft. The latter usually was limited to generic probing for rock quality and ground water conditions with no sampling. Neither yielded continuous core at production rates suitable for design and construction planning. Conventional vertical investigations still make sense in many instances, particularly for tunnels planned beneath urban settings where truck access is convenient and where the tunnel horizon is not readily accessible via a portal or shaft. However, equipment is presently available to conduct horizontal geotechnicall investigations at reasonable production rates and cost. Advantages include continuously sampling the tunneling horizon and minimizing “access drilling” to get the zone of interest at the underground construction horizon. Horizontal boring lengths of up to approximately 800 m are considered feasible and those in the range of 150 to300 m are now routine. These capabilities make horizontal borings an attractive option to consider when looking at deep tunnels beneath ridges, especially where access is limited. Fewer drilling staging sites can also mean reduced environmental impacts when investigating tunnels proposed beneath sensitive lands such as public wilderness areas. Investment in early construction packages to develop portals for investigation access and, possibly in excavating test shafts for the same purpose should even be considered. Potential benefits in the form of achieving improved overall project costs using horizontal borings exist because of the significant additional data collected in the tunnel horizon. For this reason they should be considered during the routine cost-benefit analyses generally conducted for planning geotechnical investigations for tunneling. The generalized ventilation network problems encompassing both natural and controlled splitting networks, is formulated using a nonlinear nonconvex programming model, which has not yet been solved satisfactorily. The purpose of this study is to compare estimation methods for lignite reserves at the Amyndeo mine and to provide a map of the estimated thickness of the coal seams. The reserves are first estimated with the method of Voronoi diagrams, using a group of mirror points to close the polygons around the boundaries of the mine. The second estimation method is based on Ordinary Kriging using the Spartan variogram model. Finally, the reserves are estimated by the mean lignite thickness value of the drill-hole data Two data sets are investigated. The first one corresponds to an exhausted part of the mine. The derived reserves estimates are compared with the actual data obtained by the Public Power Corporation (PPC) to validate the analysis. The second data set extends over the entire mine, and it is used to derive an approximate estimate of the total lignite reserves. A geostatistical analysis of the total layer thickness is performed. An interpolated kriging map of the total thickness variation is produced accompanied by a map of the kriging uncertainty.
