Beneficiation of boron minerals by flotation with well defined systems has been very little investigated in the literature. The difficulty arises from the fact that boron minerals cover a spectrum of solubilities. Colemanite, a calcium containing relatively insoluble boron mineral, and borax, a highly soluble boron mineral have been used to exemplify the flotation of boron minerals. The floatability of both minerals using sodium dodecylsulfonate and dodecylamine hydrochloride exhibits considerable differences in their response to flotation. This has been ascribed to variations in the solubilities 0f boron minerals and the presence of the cations in the lattice structure. Flotation tests along with zeta potential measurements are used to elucidate the mechanisms involved in the flotation of boron minerals.

The implementation of NAFTA in January of 1994 was expected to have small but beneficial effects for the Mexican economy, mostly through increased investment flows. Mexico's mining industry was especially likely to benefit, as mineral investment funds would be diverted to the now safer Mexico and away from similarly endowed but more risky Latin American mineral economies. The results of the past two years have shown that it is governments and macroeconomic factors that influence investment flows, rather than the fine-tuning of trade flows through so called "free-trade" agreements.

Open Pit Mine Production scheduling under commodity price uncertainty suffers from an exponentially increasing problem size as simulations and real options flexibility are used to generate and evaluate multiple production schedules. Robustness evaluation techniques attempt to evaluate a production schedule that is generated on a single set of economic parameters against several varying prices and sources of uncertainty. This approach is invalid as the corresponding optimal LOM mine plan will change for each set of evaluation parameters. Using commodity market futures and treasury bonds as production schedule economic input parameters provides fully price and time-value-of-money risked scheduling parameters that maintain a deterministic problem size. This paper will provide comparative analysis of project NPV’s coming from traditional price uncertainty evaluation based on a single fixed LOM mine plan using varying prices versus evaluation based on varying LOM plans that are both generated and evaluated using varying prices. When cross evaluating constant price mine plans against simulations, the upside potential and downside risk of a project are significantly misrepresented. INTRODUCTION The life of mine (LOM) production scheduling problem seeks to answer the question of from where and when to extract a given block within the ultimate pit limit as well as where and when to process it. Solving this problem takes into account the constraints of extracting any particular block while seeking to maximize the net present value (NPV) of the mineral asset as a whole. A direct driver of the value of a block, and there for the entire asset, is the market price of the commodity in question. Complications arise when an optimal production schedule is attempted to be solved under price uncertainty. Many solution methodologies have been proposed in an attempt to optimize under this criterion, yet there are three salient aspects that are overlooked during this process. They are: • Generating a single production schedule and evaluating it against many simulated price paths. • Failing to understand the mechanism describing particular commodity price behavior • Inappropriate risk adjustment In an effort to address these aspects of production scheduling under commodity price uncertainty, we propose a methodology to define the economic parameters as input that is applicable to most if not all production scheduling approaches. This methodology will not only simplify the production scheduling process in terms of establishing block value but utilizes the risk adjustment of real options valuation to avoid the arbitrary blanket risk adjustment of traditional discounted cash flow valuation. Our findings conclude that attempting to optimize around individual price paths is futile and using a market risk adjusted single price forecast provides a justified economic basis for production scheduling while maintaining the same problem size as a deterministic production scheduling problem.

In this paper, we present an a posteriori validation of a heap leaching analytical model using sensitivity analysis. The model is suitable to represent the process of heap leaching of solid reactants from porous pellets and is based on a combination of the leaching kinetics at two levels: particle and heap. The validation is simple, and a sensitivity analysis can easily be performed. The simplicity of the analysis provides insight into the control and optimization of the heap leaching process without strong mathematical complexities. The model and the corresponding sensitivity analysis include the effects of heap height, particle sizes, flow rates and several operation-design variables. Using a case study, we discuss the importance of model validation based on sensitivity analysis. We also comment on several choices for optimizing the process. We had three goals in this work: a posteriori validation, highlighting the importance of model validation and providing insight into optimization choices. We can conclude that the model has good internal logic and there are no extra variables; i.e., all of the variables in the model are necessary.

"The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) conducted underground evaluations in an attempt to quantify respirable rock dust generation when using an untreated rock dust and a rock dust treated with an anti-caking additive. Using PDM 3600s and 3700s, these evaluations measured respirable rock dust levels arising from a flinger-type application of rock dust on rib and roof surfaces. Rock dust with a majority of the respirable component removed was also applied in NIOSH’s Bruceton Experimental Mine (BEM) using a bantam duster. The respirable dust measurements obtained downwind from both of these tests are presented and discussed. This testing did not measure miners’ exposure to respirable coal mine dust under acceptable mining practices, but indicates the need for effective continuous administrative controls to be exercised when rock dusting to minimize the measured amount of rock dust in the sampling device. INTRODUCTION Two factors have combined to renew concern regarding respirable dust measurements and compliance. This renewed recognition is due to two regulations that have modified operators’ rock dust schedules. First, the 80% incombustible requirement in intake entries has increased both on-section and outby-the-section rock dusting. Secondly, the recent respirable dust regulation change that has increased the number of respirable dust samples taken per sampling cycle. Previously, when only 5 samples were needed bi-monthly, rock dusting could be scheduled to not interfere with the respirable dust sampling schedule. The significant number of samples now required under new regulations combined with the need to maintain 80% total incombustible content in active mining areas require the schedules for respirable dust sampling and rock dusting to intermix. This raises concerns about the amount of rock dust that potentially is included in the sampler weight gain. Additionally, the respirable dust maximum was lowered from 2.0 mg/m3 to 1.5 mg/m3 (effective August 1, 2016) increasing concern that rock dust contamination may be an issue. Currently, the acceptable practice is to apply administrative controls such as keeping the miners upwind during rock dust application or to schedule rock dusting during a maintenance shift when the number of miners present is lower. NIOSH’s research examining the quality of rock dust has led to the development of hydrophobic rock dusts."

It is a great pleasure for me to speak-before such a prestigious group as the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers. The substance of my talk today is the handling of coal and petroleum coke: their characteristics and environmental problems, and how we were able to correct the problems, prescribe the cure and enjoy the benefits. When coke first became a by-product derived from the oil refineries everyone would have been very happy if someone had offered to take this pro- duct off their hands. Unfortunately, there was no market at that time, and no one seemed interested. Soon thereafter, it became a sellable product and began to be shipped to many countries in the world. This was when all of the pollution problems began. I will be talking briefly about some of these problems and showing a short film on this subject afterwards.

"Tunneling and Underground works are unequivocally subject to a diversity of inherent uncertainties associated with the geotechnical, hydro-geological and environmental regime that surrounds them. On many occasions, these uncertainties can provoke loss events of considerable consequences. The present contribution elaborates on losses that the insurance market has suffered in the recent years, following a construction failure event. These losses are being considered and analysed on a quantitative basis through evaluation of cost related data, with explicit discretization of the applied construction methodology and of the subsequent developed failure type since both of which are considered of major importance. Given the identified persistence and regularity of some loss-contributing factors, recommendations are provided on the basis of a proactive risk engineering management approach that are envisaged to reinforce the understanding of project risks and alleviate the incurred insurance cost. 1 INTRODUCTION The underground construction sector has always been a very challenging area for all involved parties, including the insurance market. Main reason for that remains the uniqueness of the uncertainties sources and the subsequent inherent risks that the tunneling and underground projects are exposed to. In many instances, these risks materialize, leading to loss events with substantially high impact on reinstatement cost and incurred delays, which depending among others on the insurance coverage will have to be bared by the Insurance market. In the recent decades and as the tunneling industry boomed and expanded with many major and significant projects undertaken around the world, the insurance market was faced with additional challenges. Increased competition during tender coupled with the scale and complexity of the projects and politically driven decision making exerted pressure on the project timelines, completion dates and budget. The pressure for on-time or even early project completion- to avoid liquidated damages or achieve bonus payments, respectively- along with cost reduction efforts and the incentive for innovative failure events. That, in turn, put additional pressure on the Insurance market which had experienced a significant amount of losses with substantial cost. One of the triggered mitigation actions was the introduction of the Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works (ITIG, 2006 & 2012; MunichRe 2006, Wannick, 2007, Spencer, 2008, Adeyemo, 2011)."

The effect of particle size on coal dewatering has been well recognized However, there are no systematic studies on ultrafine coal dewatering. The results discussed last year revealed the effect of flocculant type and coal wettability on the filtration of ultrafine coal In this paper, the differences in dewatering between -25 µ m ultrafine and -500 µ m fine coal with addition of flocculants, surfactants and oil-emulsions in vacuum filtration are further investigated Significant differences were observed in the reduction of the cake moisture. The utilized emulsions were found to be very powerful and promising filtration aids for both ultrafine and fine fractions of hydrophobic and hydrophilic coal

"Gold, silver and copper form various complexes with cyanide, of which only the singly charged dicyano form adsorbs appreciably on activated carbon. The adsorption of the dicyano complexes appears to be controlled predominantly by chemical reaction at the surface of a shrinking unreacted core. Metal uptake over time is non-linear, which eliminates control by boundary layer diffusion. The rate of adsorption is not enhanced by a reaction interruption, which suggests the absence of concentration gradients in the pores. Finally, the rate of adsorption increases with decreasing activated carbon size in a manner consistent with the shrinking core model. The results of this investigation accentuate the importance of efficient acid washing of carbon and removing carbon fines from the barren carbon stream. INTRODUCTION With the dwindling reserves of high-grade ores, most of the world’s gold is produced from low-grade ores by cyanide leaching. In the past, leaching was followed by the Merrill-Crowe process, in which gold is precipitated from clarified pregnant solutions by zinc cementation. This process is still being used for high-silver ores, where the cost of carbon stripping becomes prohibitive. For deposits with silver-to-gold ratios of about 4 or less, adsorption on activated carbon would be the usual solution purification step taken. The process simplifies solid-liquid separation and offers a viable solution to preg-robbing organic carbon in some ores. The modern industrial application of carbon adsorption started with the carbon-in-pulp (CIP) process, where carbon adsorption was used mainly as a solution purification step. In 1973, Homestake Mining Company commissioned the first large-scale CIP plant in the U.S.A.1 Later, carbon was added earlier in the circuit to control preg-robbing by adsorbing gold cyanide onto activated carbon as soon as it is dissolved. The scheme is successful because activated carbon is a stronger adsorber than the organic carbon found in preg-robbing ores. This process came to be known as the carbon-in-leach (CIL) process. Numerous research investigations have been performed on the chemistry involved in the CIP process, which at the time of its introduction was not clearly understood. Of these, research on the kinetics of adsorption probably bears the most immediate impact on industrial practice,2,3 where adsorption systems rarely reach equilibrium, if at all, and slight slowdowns in the adsorption rate can translate into significant decreases in revenue. To illustrate this, organic compounds, like flotation reagents, have been known to impair CIP circuits. However, laboratory tests showed that the organic compounds do not significantly affect the adsorption capacity of activated carbon. Rather, the harmful effect may be attributed to a lowered adsorption rate.4,5 Also well known is the faster rate at which fine activated carbon powders reach equilibrium compared to coarse activated carbon, even though the final (equilibrium) amount of material adsorbed per unit weight is the same."

An International Symposium on the Ecology and Revegetation of Drastically Disturbed Areas was held at the Pennsylvania State University in August 1969. Scientists from 13 foreign countries and 18 states in the United States attended this meeting, which focused on those areas disturbed by mining. The symposium enabled scientists from all over the world to get together for two weeks and discuss informally some of the knotty problems of reclaiming these disturbed areas. Trying to present the results of each of the 64 papers delivered at the symposium might be difficult. So, I will try to bring you up to date on the general status of research on the reclamation of surface-mined areas, particularly in revegetation and hydrology. I will also mention some research that is under way but was not presented at the symposium.

The dissolution behavior of silver and copper form their elemental states and Ag/Cu alloys in ammoniacal solutions has been studied using rotating disc electrodes. The variables studied included concentration of ammonia, oxygen partial pressure and rotating speed of the disc. The results have been interpreted in terms of the mixed potential theory. The effect of local current resistance on the overall current has also been examined as a part of the governing theory of the dissolution. It was observed that the dissolution potential and the rate of dissolution were very much affected by the composition of the alloys.

The implementation of autonomous technologies for production in surface mines demands changes in the existing monitoring and control systems. The present study deals with the concepts involved in the development of a decision support system (DSS) for the supervision of a combined fleet of manned and unmanned equipment operating in a surface mine. The project was carried out as part of an autonomous mining program that lasted from early 2006 until the end of 2008. The objective of the DSS was to achieve short-term planning goals while maintaining safe working conditions. Supervisory tasks become more complex when several autonomous vehicles operate simultaneously alongside manned equipment. The operation center where the DSS was installed allowed autonomous vehicle operations to be controlled while tracking technology reliability experiments performed on control display interfaces and interaction provided design parameters for more complex supervisory systems for autonomous mines. Adsorption of sulfide collectors such as xanthate on pyrite has been studied extensively over several decades using a wide variety of techniques. In spite of this, there are unanswered questions as to the identity of adsorbed species on pyrite surfaces -dixanthogen vs. iron xanthate complexes. Far less is known in non-xanthate collector systems. We have used Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (SIMS) successfully in the past to obtain direct evidence for the identity of the adsorbed collector species on copper sulfides, galena and Cu-activated quartz. The present study is an extension of the SIMS analysis to investigate the adsorption of xanthate, dithiovhosphate, dithiocarbamate, and modified thionocarbamates and thioureas on pyrite. Adsorption of these collectors on chalcocite was also studied for comparison. An attempt was also made to obtain SIMS spectra for pure dixanthogens at room temperature. Only in the case of dithiocarbamate (DTC) was there direct evidence for the presence of not only the collector dimer, but also iron-DTC complexes. On chalcocite, only the copper-DTC complexes were detected (no dimer). In the case of xanthate, the collector molecular ion and its S adduct -which are possible fragments from dixanthogen -were detected on pyrite, along with a fragment peak: suggesting Fe2X. For dithiophosphate, the collector molecular ion and Fe(DTP)(OH) complex were detected (no dimer). For modified thionocarbamate and thiourea, adsorption on pyrite was negligible.

"Hard rock mines move large volumes of material, which can cause the conveyors that are essential to this movement to suffer lots of problems, including carryback, spillage, dust and belt wander. Many of these issues are created at the transfer points where the belts are loaded.This article provides an overview of the latest transfer point systems that incorporate safety and serviceability by design as well as a report on recent projects. One project is the Conveyor B Transfer at the Coeur Rochester silver mine near Lovelock, NV. Here, performance was improved with the installation of belt support cradles, engineered chute walls with external wear liner, and a compact dust collector. A second project is the improvement of belt support idlers and skirtboard sealing in a long loading zone of a conveyor under the concentrator at an Arizona copper mine.The importance of transfer pointsConveyors are essential in mine material handling. Their performance will often make the difference in mine productivity and profitability. A key to conveyor performance is the transfer points where the conveyor belt is loaded and discharges. At these transfer points, many of the problems encountered with the conveyor system are created.The problems that arise at the transfer stations include off-center and segregated loading, mistracking, blockages and plugging. And there are a variety of problems originating with fugitive material — cargo released in the form of carryback, spillage or airborne dust — that are created or exacerbated in the transfer points. These fugitive materials turn into other conveyor-related problems, including shortened component life, unplanned outages for conveyor maintenance, unexpectedly high labor costs for maintenance and cleanup, worker health and safety problems and issues with community relations. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration estimates that 85 percent of conveyor maintenance is a result of fugitive material at conveyor transfer points.Technologies to improve transfer pointsA number of techniques to improve the performance of conveyor transfer points have been developed. Large reserves of coal pond fines are found in the Illinois Basin-over 40 million tons in Western Kentucky, over 65 million tons in Southern Illinois, and over 35 million tons in Southern Indiana. If these fines are used to produce coal-water slurry (CWS), fuel costs, NOx. emissions, and pond closure costs can be reduced. Coal fines from this region that are used to produce CWS for co-fire or re-burn may require processing, however, to attain proper particle size distribution and fuel quality. To evaluate the effectiveness of using coal cleaning technologies to control these CWS quality parameters, a simple flowsheet for recovering and processing coal pond fines was designed and tested. Coal fines processing consisted of using classifying cyclones to size at nominal minus 200 mesh, cleaning the classifying cyclone underflow using spirals, and cleaning the overflow using column froth flotation. Ash content of the dean coal from the spiral was reduced to about 10 percent, which is satisfactory to use for CWS co-firing in a cyclone-fired boiler. The clean coal from column flotation may be used for re-burn in a cyclone-fired boiler or as co-fire fuel in a wall-fired or tangentially-fired boiler. Heating value recovery during laboratory-scale, pilot-scale, and commercial-scale coal cleaning testing was about 80 percent.

Copper smelter flue dusts containing arsenic are hazardous materials requiring environmentally accept-able disposal, preferably with re-source recovery under the RCRA and CRCLA regulations. However, the known resource recovery processes entail capital and operating costs greater than can be justified by the revenue of the recovered metal. Consequently, the smelting industry is tending to forego resource recovery in favor of encapsulation and storage in a certified class I hazardous waste site, or in a dedicated facility located at the source Superfund site. Order of magnitude costs for this option with portland cement encapsulation are estimated at $100 per ton, not including transportation. Industrial adoption of a new resource recovery process re-quires that its cost, including capital amortization, exceed the cost of encapsulation and storage only by the amount of the offsetting revenue from sale of metal. The lime-roast/ammoniacal leaching process is expected to meet this goal.

Gold cyanide equilibrium adsorption isotherms in the loading range typical of operating carbon-in-pulp/carbon-in-leach plants have been established and the effect of various cations and the presence of copper cyanide species quantified. It was found that the equilibrium loading of gold was enhanced by the presence of sodium or calcium, with calcium having an order of magnitude stronger effect. The presence of copper has an adverse effect on the equilibrium loading of gold. A unified model was developed to predict the effect of sodium and calcium concentrations in solution and the competitive carbon adsorption of copper on the equilibrium loading of gold on carbon. A satisfactory agreement between the measured gold equilibrium loadings and the model results was obtained over a wide range of solution conditions.

The addition of new data and corrections can be made under the control of a simple editing session. All programs for this system are written in FORTRAN and executabe "MACROS".. After the addition of new data, the whole file Is reinitialized to update the binary file and cross-reference tables. Updating the binary file involves rerunning the initializing program. The creation of graphic plots like cross sections and plan views is menu-driven from a terminal and very user-friendly. Small files containing not more than 10,000 entries (survey and assay points) are suitable for this setup, particularly for computers with less than 2 Megabytes of real and virtual memory. The largest file processed contained 35,000 lines of survey and assay information and required 4 megabytes of virtual memory. Working with this size file slows down the time for the creation of plots and cross sections. Another independent system is more akin to a financial type of data base. It was installed in one Anaconda mine as part of the operation's inventory, warehouse, day-pay payroll, and purchasing data bases. It is a highly hardware-dependent system, in particular, IBM's CICS/VS (Customer Information Control System/Virtual Storage). This is a true relational data base that optimizes storage requirements, supports online inquiry, update, data entry, and data security. While this system has been tested and proven in accounting applications, it requires programming expertice in PL/I and other CICS utility programs. It is well suited for huge data bases (like the 35,000 lines of data), but cumbersome for small engineering files.

In practice, geochemical analyses can be grouped in two broad categories according to their aim. Those that seek to determine the exact chemical composition of geological materials fall under the heading of assays, whereas applied geochemistry concerns itself with the detection of anomaly contrasts. Recent trends have blurred the distinction between both approaches for many users, as methods that were traditionally used for assays are being adopted in applied geochemistry and assays make increasing use of instrumental techniques. Nevertheless. it is important to keep a clear distinction between the two types of analyses because it has immediate practical consequences, cost is the most obvious, as well as fundamental implications. In the broadest terms, the goal of geochemistry is to strike an optimal balance between throughput and accuracy, at the lowest reasonable cost, while assays strive for accuracy. Traditionally, complete silicate analysis has been the concern of assayers whereas exploration geochemists have been more interested in base metal analyses where acid extractions of the elements, without dissolution of the silicate matrix, has been the norm. This kind of distinction is less realistic now, especially with the growth in lithogeochemical studies, and some overlap in methodology is unavoidable. However, where such overlaps occur the distinction remains in the emphasis of the work. A commonly used example is that although HF acid preparations are used by both, the emphasis in applied geochemistry is on sample throughput and batch analysis, whereas assayers are more concerned with the range of elements to be determined (Thompson and Walsh, 1983).

The Empire concentrator currently processes magnetite ore from the Empire pit which is approaching the end of its mine life. Over the past two years plant wide tests have been run to access the plant capability of processing ore from the neighboring sister Magnetite pit. The neighboring pit presents challenges to the Empire plant due to its higher feed grade, finer liberation size and higher percent silica which require additional secondary grinding and concentrating capacity to achieve concentrate grade.
