The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) conducted a series of laboratory tests to investigate the effectiveness of using a flooded-bed scrubber with exhaust ventilation in deep-cut faces of up to 12.2 m in length. An experimental test program to determine the impact on respirable dust levels resulting from changes in face airflow, curtain setback distance, operator positioning, and operating parameters of the external spray system on the miner was completed. Gravimetric sampling was conducted in the immediate return and at three sampling locations on the off-curtain side of the entry. Statistically significant differences in dust levels on the order of 0.5 to 1.2 mg/m3 were observed between specific sampling locations and changes in several test parameters. Dust sampling results indicated that a flooded-bed scrubber and exhaust ventilation can be a viable dust control system for extracting deep cuts up to 12.2 m in length. The impact on methane was not evaluated.

A glance at the following chart reveals that because of the continued poor economy, the slump in industrial mineral production continued into 1980. Gypsum was down 17% from 1979; cement down 9%, sand and gravel, 17%, and crushed stone, 11%. All these downward trends reflect the high interest rates and high costs that slowed construction starts. Domestic fluorspar was down 21% and imports off 14% due to the steel iudustry slump. However, potash production was up 8% and phosphate, 5%. Increased drilling activity spurred au increase in barite production of 25%. Most other industrial minerals posted losses with only a few insignificant increases. As expected, prices were higher, reflecting increases due to high costs for labor, supplies, and above all, energy. Increasing energy and transportation costs also had their effect on industrial mineral production. Railroad freight rates increased 16-22% including fuel surcharge; truck rates increased 11-14%a; and ocean freight rates increased 20% for finished goods. The 1979 shortage of boa and hopper cars did not continue into 1980-most likely due to low production of many of the hulk industrial mineral commodities. All in all, 1980 was not a good Year for industrial minerals.

A special type of shotcrete is used to improve the performance of open-type TBM in difficult situations. The Hakamagoshi and Johana tunnels are expressway evacuation tunnels of 3.2 km and 5.1 km in length, respectively (total 9.1 km) that were excavated by one open-type TBM. The geological conditions at the sites were estimated to be good before excavation. However, 95% of the rock turned out to be two ranking orders worse than the estimated classes. Therefore, we used a special shotcrete for bad rock conditions, and succeeded in excavating the tunnel at an average rate of 270 m/month.

Sodium sulfate is one of the larger tonnage industrial minerals. A little more than half of this tonnage — 3 Mt/a (3.3 million stpy) of natural product— is recovered from ore deposits. Most of the rest is produced as a byproduct from other manufacturing operations. Sodium sulfate is mined in a variety of ways. These include conventional room-and-pillar mining, strip mining, in situ leaching of thick ore beds, solar evaporation and cooling-crystallization of lake brine, and the pumping of brine from complex salt deposits. There is also a variety of commercial sodium sulfate ore sources. They include thenardite (the mineral form of sodium sulfate, or Na2SO4), mirabilite (glauber salt,Na2SO4•10H2O), glauberite (Na2SO4•CaSO4), astra-kanite (bloedite; Na2SO4•MgSO4•4H2O), burkeite(2Na2SO4•Na2CO3), sodium sulfate-containing caliche and various brines.

"Earth provides natural resources, such as fossil fuels and minerals that are vital for human life. As the global demand grows, especially for strategic minerals, commodity prices rapidly rise. Thus there is an identifiable risk of increasing supply shortage for minerals. Hence a major element in a long-term economic strategy must be, to ensure security of supply for these strategic minerals. In this rapidly changing global economic landscape, deep sea mining has gone from a distant possibility to a likely reality within just a decade.Although deep sea minerals extraction was investigated in the 1970’s, it was abandoned because of changing commodity economics, advances in on-land exploration techniques, growing concern on environmental impact, and political and legal aspects with regard to ownership issues. The developmental data from those days, if still available, are not adequate to allow engineering and building of an integral system for extraction of deep sea minerals without additional R&D work. Thus, deep sea mining is yet to attain a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) sufficient to successfully undertake deep sea mining operations, from resource discovery to resource assessment and to resource exploitation [Blue Mining, 2014]."

global mining boom and in-creased demand for iron ore has lead to a resurgence in the mining industry in Minnesota. At the combined 81st Annual Minnesota Section of SME Meeting and 69th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium, April 15-16 in Duluth, MN, this resurgence was the hot topic as new mining projects were featured in the keynote session. The meeting attracted more than 400 mining industry professionals, including engineers, executives, mining managers and suppliers from around the world. This year?s theme was ?New Ventures in Mining.? The meeting included concurrent technical papers sessions, a keynote session that featured three distinguished speakers and a panel discussion that provided updates on new mining developments in the state. The Minnesota Section of SME technical papers were presented in concurrent sessions, one on mining and one on mineral processing. The mining session included papers on drilling, ore blending, slope stabilization, dust control and operations management. The mineral processing session included papers on plant-control technology, ball mills, pellet strength and fans. Also offered was an SME short course titled ?Simulation based pellet induration optimization.? The Minnesota Section of SME held its annual business meeting during the conference. The 69th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium technical sessions were held on April 15 and also consisted of concurrent sessions on mining and mineral processing. Mining session topics included logistics management, real-time performance measurement, uses for taconite aggregate and environmental issues. The mineral processing session included papers on ore liberation characteristics, zeta potential studies, induration modeling, fuel optimization and conveyor belts. The combined conference included a tradeshow with more than 80 booth spaces featuring vendors offering products and services to Minnesota?s booming mining industry. More than 900 people, including conference registrants and special invited guests of the vendors, at-tended the tradeshow opening reception. This was the largest trade show in many years ? an indication of the vitality of the mining industry in Minnesota.

Train services through the Channel Tunnel linking Britain and France where scheduled to be fully restored in February 2009 following several months of repairs after a major fire in the tunnel on Sept. 11, 2008. A lorry caught fire on a shuttle train carrying heavy goods vehicles bound for France through the 50-km- (31-mile-) long northern tunnel. The fire, that spread to other vehicles, raged for about 16 hours. The extreme temperatures of up to 1,000º C (1,832° F) caused extensive damage to about 600 m (2,000 ft) of the 7.6-m- (25-ft-) diameter tunnel?s concrete lining, approximately 11 km (7 miles) in from the French entrance. The Channel Tunnel operator, Eurotunnel, awarded the repair con-tract, estimated to be between ?50 to 60 million, to a consortium of Freyssinet, Eurovia Travaux Ferroviaires (ETF) and Vinci Energies. Freyssinet was appointed to look after the civil engineering works, while ETF would be responsible for track and overhead wire restoration and Vinci Energies responsible for other equipment. The technique of hydrodemolition, which uses high-pressure water jets to remove concrete from various structures, was specified as the method to remove the fire damaged concrete. Freyssinet subcontracted the concrete removal to the specialist hydrodemolition and industrial cleaning contractor Philip Lasserat.

With the dawning of a new century came the beginning of a new era in the coal industry. Instead of the traditional practice of only buying and selling produced coal in the United States, a coal futures market was established. The New York Mercantile Exchange began trading coal futures in July 2001. But, even in this new era, many of the old is-sues that have beset the coal industry still remain, as was evident in2001. Coal production increased to are cord level during 2001, according to preliminary data from the US Energy Information Administration(EIA). Production in 2001 rose by4% to 1.01 Gt (1.12 billion st), compared with 2000 (Table 1). This barely surpassed the previous record level of 1 Gt (1.11 billion st)set in 1998. Coal consumption remained unchanged. The additional production was used to replenish the depleted stockpiles that had resulted after two years of declining coal production and increasing coal consumption.

Because of its small interburden thickness, concentrated stress distributions, high coal seam metamorphism, and complex geological conditions, mining the five coal seams (Nos. 5, 7, 8, 9 and 12) of Kaiping coalfield is difficult. Kaiping coalfield is located within 80 m in the Kailuan Group. The overburden caving caused by mining the five coals seams was measured using ZTR12 geological penetration radar (GPR) survey combined with borehole observations. The development characteristics of full-cover rock fractures after mining were obtained from the GPR scan, which provides a measurement basis for the control of rock strata in close multiple-seam coal mining. For the first time, it was found that the overburden caving pattern shows a periodic triangular caved characteristic. Furthermore, it is proposed that an upright triangular collapsed rock pile and an inverted triangular area with larger fragments piled up alternately appear in the lower gob. The research results show that the roof structure formed in the gob area can support the key overlying strata, which is beneficial to ensure the integrity and stability of the upper coal seams in multiple-seam mining of close-coal seams.

Two miners were fatally injured when a pillar bump occurred during retreat mining in a southern West Virginia coal mine. The mine was operating in the Eagle seam with overmining in the No. 2 Gas and Powellton seams. A coal bump is defined as a sudden and violent failure of coal caused by the release of stored strain energy in the pillar. While significant strides have been made by academia, industry, and regulatory agencies to better understand bump conditions and mitigation techniques, coal bumps represent a long standing, highly site-specific engineering problem in which the exact failure mechanism(s) is not clearly understood.

The Henderson/ML King CSO Project is a major combined sewer overflow (CSO)reduction project for the Department of Natural Resources and Parks of King County, Washington. The central element of the project is the 3100 lineal feet long, 14'-8"diameter 42nd Ave S Storage/Treatment Tunnel. During the course of the project, the owner and consultants evaluated numerous elements of the tunnel including the alignment, geotechnical conditions, tunnel liner, and settlement monitoring requirements. The contractor utilized innovative shaft construction methods for the tunnel portals, and adhered to strict contract requirements in successfully constructing the tunnel. This paper provides an overview of the design and construction elements of the 42nd Ave S Storage/Treatment Tunnel that led to the successful completion of the project.

Although primarily cut-and-cover excavations are required for replacement of the existing elevated I-93 interstate highway through the heart of Boston for the Central Artery/Tunnel (CA/T) project, some mined tunnel construction was also undertaken. The mined tunneling conducted was the 22-m-wide northbound roadway structure which passed below a 20-m-deep operating underground subway station that was built in 1913. The innovative underpinning scheme used to support the subway station during construction resulted in the successful mining beneath the subway station with negligible vertical settlement. Two grouting galleries were carefully mined below the subway structure, and pre-grouting of the granulary, pervious glacial soils and weathered bedrock was carried out from these galleries. The reinforced concrete walls of the underpinning structure were constructed within three stacked drifts that were sequentially mined below each grouting gallery. After 11 cross adits were mined between the grouting galleries, cast-in-place post-tensioned girders that spanned between the stacked-drift walls were constructed to support the subway station. The stacked-drift walls also provided lateral support for the 22-m wide by 29-m long by13-m high opening beneath the girders.

One of the biggest challenges for the mining industry is, quite literally, how to the keep the equipment rolling. There is a limited amount of companies that manufacture the 4.2-m- (14-ft-) tall, 5,670-kg (12,500-lb-) tires needed for the haul trucks that are approaching the 362 t (400 st) pay-load class, such as Terex?s MT6300-AC and Caterpillar?s 797F. And, while these might be the most impressive tires, they are not the only ones that are in short supply. The shortage of tires has affected just about every kind of machine, and the demand for those tires has been extremely high for more than five years with no end to the shortage in site. American Tire Corp. (www.americantire.us) is one of the companies working to supply tires to the mining industry. It announced that the demand for its 1.6-m (63-in.) tires that have a zero failure history globally is great and that the company signed contracts worth more than $500 million at MinExpo. Ceremonies for the induction of five mining industry pioneers into the National Mining Hall of Fame will be on Sept. 12, 2009 at the Charles F. Barber Pavilion of the Museum Convention Center in Leadville, CO. The five inductees are: Paul A. Bailey, 82, Richard T. Moolick, 89, William Braden and Alonzo Pawling and Henry Harnischfeger. Paul A. Bailly was president of Bear Creek Mining Co., the U.S. exploration subsidiary of Kennecott Copper, from 1961 to 1967. In 1968, he joined Occidental Petroleum Corp. and was tasked with creating the company?s international mining division, Oxymin, which he led as president through 1983. During his distinguished career, Bailly participated in numerous significant mineral discoveries, developed a new exploration philosophy and made important additions to the mineral exploration literature. William Braden was the first to recognize the immense potential of the El Teniente orebody in Chile. He founded Braden Copper Co. and developed the El Teniente Mine which now, 100 years later, remains the world?s largest underground copper mine. Braden?s endeavor survives to-day as the El Teniente division of the Chilean state copper company, CODELCO. T. (Dick) Moolick established a lasting legacy in the mining industry, first during a 35 year career with Phelps Dodge Corp. and then as the driving force in establishing the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum in Leadville. The Hall of Fame and Museum ? a monument to the memory of the men and women who pioneered the discovery and development of the United States? natural resources ? has become one of the fi nest museums in the western United States.

Spray-on ground support membranes (GSM) or thin support liners hold today perhaps as much potential to impact underground (u/g) ground support operations as dry and later wet-mix shotcrete when introduced to mining in the latter part of the 20th century. This emerging technology has come a long way from the time the first single component experimental coatings were tested in the mid-1980s. Due to a number of factors, including occupational health risk and mine safety regulations, it has taken quite some time for the development of non-hazardous membrane products. However, at this junction most existing u/g mines that employ more conventional forms of ground support could benefit from evaluating GSM technology as a means of improving safety and the bottom line. The same is especially true for future mine developments. This paper describes Master Builders Inc.’s CS1251 GSM product and its implementation. It discusses the situations in which GSM may replace other forms of ground support. Furthermore, it evaluates GSM costs & safety issues and looks at present applications and the potentially bright future of this technology.

The use of a single tunnel boring machine (TBM) tunnel of approximately 12 to 13 m (40 ft to 43 ft) diameter for transit systems to house both light rail or subway tracks in a stacked configuration is an advanced concept that allows significant savings in construction cost and time while reducing, to a large extent, the negative effects on the environment. This solution, similar to the recently completed Barcelona Metro Line 9, integrates station platforms, train storages, crossovers, bypass tracks, ancillary areas and utility corridors inside a single tunnel. Each of the underground stations consist of a cut-and-cover entrance structure and ventilation shafts, that also serve as emergency exits. The excavations for the station structures and shafts can be done on one side of the street with nominal impact on traffic and utilities.

Lineament analysis, a remote sensing application for geological structures, has been criticized for reliance on subjective interpretations. The Mine Safety & Health Administration’s Roof Control Division performs lineament analyses with a technique that removes much subjectivity. Study areas are viewed on satellite images with software that allows examination under artificial sun azimuths and elevations. Extraneous lineaments are removed through successive steps of superposition, resulting in selection of the most robust linear features. Field investigations revealed a strong coincidence of joint and fault zones that were parallel with projected lineaments. The Roof Control Division’s successful identification of lineaments associated with roof falls and highwall failures has prompted some mine managers to incorporate lineament analysis as a mine-planning tool. The identification of potentially hazardous ground conditions will allow mine operators to obviate safety concerns that might otherwise adversely affect miner health and safety.

Eighteen coarse taconite tailings samples were collected in 2000-2001 from five western Mesabi Range taconite (iron ore) operations located in northern Minnesota, i.e., EVTAC, Hibbing Taconite (Hibtac), USX Minntac, Ispat Inland (Minorca), and National Steel Pellet Company (NSPC), to test their physical, geological, chemical, and mineralogical properties [Zanko, L.M., Niles, H.B., Oreskovich, J.A., 2003. Properties and aggregate potential of coarse taconite tailings from five Minnesota taconite operations, Minnesota Department of Transportation, Local Road Research Board, St. Paul, MN, Report No. 2004-06 (also as Natural Resources Research Institute technical report, NRRI/TR-2003/44)]. The goal was to assemble a body of technical data that could be used to better assess the potential of using a crushed taconite mining byproduct like coarse tailings for more widespread construction aggregate purposes, primarily in roads and high¬ways. An important part of the mineralogical assessment included X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses and microscopic (polarized light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy, i.e., PLM, SEM, and TEM, respectively) evaluation of the size and shape (morphological) characteristics of potentially respirable microscopic mineral particles and fragments. Quantitative mineralogy, based on XRD analyses, showed that the dominant mineral in all samples was quartz (55-60%), followed by much smaller amounts of iron oxides, carbonates, and silicates. Specialized microscopic analyses and testing performed by the RJ Lee Group, Monroeville, PA, on both pulverized (-200 mesh, or 0.075 mm) and as-is sample composites showed that no regulated asbestos minerals or amphibole minerals were detected in the western Mesabi Range samples. A small number (26) of non-asbestos and non¬amphibole mineral cleavage fragments/mineral fibers were detected by SEM out of 1000 fields analyzed, but most were identified as min¬nesotaite and talc, silicate minerals common to the Biwabik Iron Formation. Amphibole minerals, absent in coarse tailings samples from the five western Mesabi Range taconite operations, were present in a single eastern Biwabik Iron Formation sample collected in 2003 for Lake County from the Cliffs Northshore operation in Silver Bay, MN. Importantly, the Superfund Method for the Determination of Releasable Asbestos in Soils and Bulk Materials [United States Environ¬mental Protection Agency (USEPA), 1997. Superfund method for the determination of releasable asbestos in soils and bulk materials, EPA 540-R-97-028, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington], as modified by Berman and Kolk [Berman, D.W., Kolk, A.J., 2000. Modified elutriator method for the determination of asbestos in soils and bulk materials, Revision 1: Submitted to the U.S. Envi¬ronmental Protection Agency, Region 8, May 23, 2000] failed to generate any protocol fibers, i.e., fibers longer than 5 µm and thinner than 0.5 µm, from either the western coarse tailings samples or the single eastern Biwabik Iron Formation sample. The combined findings suggest coarse tailings and other taconite mining byproducts should be treated with the same common sense safety and industrial hygiene approach practiced for all mineral-based materials that have the potential to generate respirable dust. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. The Turin metro alluvium soil is mainly made of large boulders, cobbles and gravel , few sand and almost no fines. This grain size curve is out of the range of application for EPB and Slurry TBMs. In order to bore 5 of the total 7,5 kms of Line 1 tunnel, two specially designed Lovat EPB TBMs were utilised in combination with a systematic non structural pre-grouting of a small volume rectangular slab just above the tunnel section. The same pre-grouting was not however applicable for lack of access on surface in some sections of the remaining 2,5 km of tunnel that had to be bored below important buildings/structures, with under ground water pressure up to 1,5 bar, with curves radius of 180 m only. For these more critical sections it was necessary to study and implement a new technical solution and improve the capacity of the TBM to work efficiently in EPB mode even in this unsuitable ground and overall conditions. After months of studies the selected and adopted solution has been to inject inside the cutterhead chamber, in addition to the almost standard foams & polymers additive mixes, a suspension of limestone powders. This with the scope of compensating the lack of fines of the natural ground with rock powders.

In July 1997, Kvaerner Environmental signed a unique contract with Echo Bay Alaska called the Transfer Risk and Accelerate Closure (TRAC). The contract called for Kvaerner to assume the responsibilities and obligations associated with closeout of the Alaska-Juneau (A-J) Mine. Kvaerner is an international engineering and construction company with global interdisciplinary experience in the mining industry and environmental remediation. Echo Bay’s requirements called for Kvaerner to: •Provide a fixed price for closure with no change orders. •Negotiate, prepare and implement a final closeout plan as outlined by Echo Bay. •Complete a closure program that exceeded current regulatory requirements. •Improve, expand and maintain a proactive public and community relations program. •Hire Echo Bay employees where possible. •Provide adequate performance guarantees and judicial relief of environmental claims.
