According to the model of product life cycles, the global coal mining industry is in the stagnation phase. The coal demand of the main consumer, China, has peaked in 2013 and is slowly declining. The Norwegian sovereign wealth fund, the world´s largest, has excluded coal-related companies for ethical reasons. Important players like the UN or the EU have already begun to describe pathways towards de-carbonization. Increasing competition between coal mining companies and the mining regions can be expected worldwide if companies want to keep their positions on the global and national coal markets. Companies will focus on the best deposits. European countries like France, Spain or Germany are only forerunners of this development - their centuries of coal production have been finished. The concept of Sustainable Development (SD) is fundamentally based on a model of progress where ecological, economic and social dimensions should be developed equally and positively. But without the idea of competition, the concept of SD is incomplete. Questions arise, such as: How can SD be realized on stagnating or declining markets without guarantees for companies “to live forever”? How can SD be a corporate goal in a phase of decline? How can declining mining regions sustainably progress into a better future? The German hard coal mining industry´s lifecycle has ended in 2018 after 60 years of stagnation and decline. As of 2019, all hard coal consumed in Germany will be imported, especially from Colombia, Russia and South Africa. What has been done in Germany to handle the coal decline in a sustainable way and the lessons learned from this process is described in this paper. It may be useful for mining regions who will face a similar future sooner or later. INTRODUCTION Principally, mining natural resources is a finite business that reaches its limits once the deposits mined are depleted, the resources can no longer be mined in an economically profitable way, or substitutes are pushing the mined products out of the market. An example for the latter is the increasing replacement of coal with natural gas and renewables in power generation in the USA. (Kok 2017) According to the model of the product lifecycle, the global mining hard coal mining industry has reached the stagnation phase. (Kretschmann 2000) Although the coal mining business is more a multi-regional than a global business the trend is obvious. The peak of coal use is behind us, especially because the coal demand of China is slowly decreasing since 2013. (Shell 2018) China´s government has announced investing $360 billion in renewable energy by 2020 and scrap plans to build 85 coal-fired power plants. In March 2018, Chinese authorities reported that the country was already exceeding official targets for energy efficiency, carbon intensity, and the share of clean energy sources. China’s energy regulator, the National Energy Administration, rolled out new measures to reduce the country’s dependence on coal. (Kejun and Woetzel 2017) Coal consumption in the US is facing a 16 % decline in five years from 800 to 670 million short tons between 2015 and 2019 and - according to the EIA – will not rise again. (EIA 2018) The decline is attributed to complex market dynamics from low gas prices because of the “shale gas revolution” (Kok 2017, p. 3) to federal environmental regulation like the Clean Power Plan. The United Nations´ UNEP Finance Initiative is cooperating with the Portfolio Decarbonization Coalition of institutional investors to implement decarbonization strategies across their portfolio. Amongst these investors is the New York State Common Retirement Fund, the third largest public pension plan in the USA. It is becoming evident that traditional methods of econometric analysis are inadequate in estimating-the long-run supply of minerals. Econometrics is limited to extracting estimates from observations of the theory predicts that the least cost deposits will be exploited first.1 The estimation of parameters from past data then must lead to biased projections of the future. Mining conditions in the future will be worse than in the past and it is the impact of the future conditions on cost that we need to know. In this paper we present a methodology for dealing with this problem. We estimate a "cumulative cost" function that yields the long-run marginal cost of mining as a function of cumulative output produced over time.2 This is relatively easy to do for coal mining in the United States where exploration for new deposits is not a major factor in supply. The first step of the procedure relates cost to the rate of output and to the geological conditions of the mine. The second step combines geological information on remaining deposits with the cost function to yield the cumulative cost function. A central theme of both these steps is the interaction of economics with geology. The best deposits are selected first and in each step of the estimation allowance must be made for this fact. The problem of depletion is part of the general problem of structural change. The change through depletion in the nature of the exploitable mineral stock is only one factor that calls for an analysis sensitive to the changing circumstances of the industry. Greater awareness of the increasing need to develop supplementary energy sources is accelerating us towards many basic decisions regarding future utilization of mined energy materials -- uranium, coal, oil sands and oil shale. The latter material comprises a major potential source of oil which will require creation of unusually large and low-cost underground mining systems. In this paper, the author briefly outlines and analyzes several of the factors which continue to provide the somewhat unique character of oil shale nine planning and mine operation.

The paper describes experiments at the Somerset Mine, Colorado, under a cooperative agreement between U.S. Steel and the U.S. Bureau of Mines. A test was made of the tube bundle method of mine air sampling which was developed for European longwall mines; some 300,000 running feet of tubing provided continuous monitoring at 39 locations. Carbon monoxide concentrations were obtained with standard deviations of less than 1 ppm and oxygen concentrations with standard deviations of less than 0.20 percent. A base level of CO index (ppm CO evolved/pct 02 removed)) was determined to be 0-20 through most of the passageways of the mine. However, in one working section where the coal was initially hot (about 180°F within a pillar) the CO index was demonstrably higher, >20 trending upward to about 60 when smoke appeared and the section was sealed. The data are discussed in terms of laboratory experiments on CO evolution from coals.

During the summer and fall of 1973 a series of Skylab and high-altitude aircraft overflights provided excellent hard-copy photographs of the Great Basin. These photographs, with a wide range of ground resolution were used by the NASA Project of the University of Nevada, Reno, to conduct specific geologic studies. The principal objectives of these studies were to: select individual areas covered by Skylab photography for detailed studies, develop mapping techniques using varied film-filter products with a wide range of ground resolution, compare the results of the mapping techniques to existing geologic maps at comparable scales, verify the results wherever possible by direct field observations. These studies were conducted by Jack Quade and Dennis Trexler and by graduates and undergraduates of the Reno campus under a contract with the Manned Spacecraft Center Houston, Texas.

Underground mine development begins with the positive investment decision to mine and ends with the inception of full-scale exploitation. It incorporates all activities, personnel, and equipment required for creation of underground access to a mineral deposit. Because of the depletion of near-surface mineral resources, the reduced mobility of large surface mining equipment, increasingly stringent environmental constraints, and the introduction of promising innovations to rock penetration and rock excavating equipment (e.g., continuous miners, rock borers), under-ground mining is projected to account for an increased share of worldwide mineral production in the foreseeable future. Without proper engineering during the mine development phase, failure of the underground mining project is axiomatic. A frustration attendant to coverage of the complex area of underground mine development lies not only with the need for treatment of the many disparate specialties within the area but even with the lack of systematization of these specialties in what is recognized as a vital precursor to successful mining. Over the last six years, several new commercial families of sulfide mineral collectors have been developed. This paper summarizes some plant data and use experiences gained with each of these product families. The first is a series of products (F-series) based on a chelation mechanism of attachment. The second of these families is a series of products (S-series) based on an electrochemically controlled mechanism of attachment. The major advantage of the F-series collectors is the very high metal recovery capability in complex ores involving Au, Pt, Zn, Ni, and mixed Cu minerals. The major advantages of the S-series collectors are the very high pyrite rejection capability along with reduced lime requirements in Cu/Mo plants.

Exploration budgets are commonly determined by "rules of thumb" such as a percentage of earnings or other fiscal measure. An appropriate exploration budget is the amount needed to achieve the goals of the company. It can be determined by discounting the income expected from achieved goals. Budgets for individual projects are determined in a similar manner except that risk of failure is included in the computation.

Integrated mining information and process control systems can reduce information delays, enhance decision making and improve the responsiveness of mining operations to, for example, variations in market conditions, mineral grades and ground conditions. This paper examines developments in the areas of: monitoring, data analysis and diagnosis,' communications systems; integrated mining support system;, and process and machine control. It concludes that the development of a comprehensive information technology plan is fundamental to the phased implementation of these technologies. In addition, hardware and software standards and concurrent digital design and simulation practices in selected manufacturing industries are examined and concluded to have relevance to the mining industry. Integrated information and process control systems will lead to emergence of the "digital mine". Such advances in mining information infrastructure as well as mining equipment will enable mining operations to shift from mass production methods to leaner production techniques. "Lean mining" aims to enhance and accelerate cash flow over the life of a mine by focusing on reduction of' throughput times; stockpiles for volume and quality control; and wastage and rework.

The expansion in gold production in the Carlin 'Trend over the last few years has been one of staggering proportion. To increase gold production while minimizing capital requirements and providing for the safe and efficient mining and processing of ores has required a tremendous effort by the Mine Engineering group at Newmont Gold. This paper discusses the organizational changes implemented to effectively deal with a full range of engineering problems and how the Newmont Gold Mine Engineering group dealt with these problems. Specially developed computer software and their applications will be explained. Improvements in the techniques used in converting geologic resources into reserves, and in scheduling the mining of multiple pits to feed multiple processing facilities, as well as ore control procedures are presented. Current mine engineering practices are discussed.

However, there is one difference and it is important, Lead can not only be kept looking young, but it can, in fact, actually be kept young, This results from two things. First, industry and technology are constantly changing. For example, we have known for years that the density of lead makes it ideal to stop gamma rays, but it is only recently that atomic fission as a source of gamma radiation has become an important tool of industry, That makes old knowledge about lead useful in developing a new market for it.

ABSTRACT Recent advances in computing, rendering, and display technologies have generated increased accessibility for virtual reality (VR). VR allows the creation of dynamic, high-fidelity environments to simulate dangerous situations, test conditions, and visualize concepts. Consequently, numerous products have been developed, but many of these are limited in scope. Therefore, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health researchers developed a VR framework, called VR Mine, to rapidly create an underground mine for human data collection, simulation, visualization, and training. This paper describes the features of VR Mine using self-escape and proximity detection as case studies. Features include mine generation, simulated networks, proximity detection systems, and the integration and visualization of real-time ventilation models. INTRODUCTION There are many definitions of virtual reality (VR) that include various levels of immersion and features [1]. Some definitions refer to specific technologies [2], while others are limited to visualization [3]. For this paper, a more general definition of VR will be adopted. VR is defined as the collection of hardware and software that interactively engages users and stimulates their senses within a synthetic or virtual environment. From a hardware standpoint, this can include anything from a phone to a head-mounted display (HMD) to a large-scale theater as well as speakers, microphones, haptic sensors, and interaction devices. The software used to create virtual environments (VEs) generally includes a game engine, custom software components and libraries, and two-dimensional and three-dimensional graphical assets. Recent hardware and software advances have increased the fidelity and availability of VR. New and improved technologies including HMDs and high-resolution monitors and projectors can display sharper, more detailed visualizations. For example, in the past five years between the release of the Oculus Rift DK1 (2013) and the HTC Vive Pro (2018), there was a three-fold increase in resolution along with a 50% increase in the refresh rate. Furthermore, despite early claims that low-cost VR technology was readily available [4], computational power has not been sufficient to handle the large amount of data generated by these systems [5]. In the past five years, however, rendering speeds have more than doubled and memory has more than tripled [6], allowing these visualizations to be incorporated into higher-complexity and -fidelity VEs that more closely mirror the real world. Similarly, software capabilities have also significantly improved through game engine advancements and feature development. In the past several years, game engines have added and improved features such as physics, lighting, platform support (e.g. Android), and asset development integration. Some of the current leading commercial game engines are Amazon Lumberyard, CryEngine, Unreal, and Unity, but this can quickly change as is evident in the literature [7, 8].

Rio Algom Limited are currently undergoing a major expansion of their mining operations in the Elliot Lake area. To date this has involved the increase of output at the Quirke Mine from 4080 to 6350 tonnes per mill day (4500 to 7000 tons), the rehabilitation of the Panel Mine to produce at the rate of 2990 tonnes per mill day (3300 tons) by 1980, and the rehabilitation of the Stanleigh Mine to produce 4540 tonnes per mill day (5000 tons) by 1984. In addition, the planning for the rehabilitation of the Milliken Mine to produce 4990 tonnes per mill day (5500 tons) is now underway. This major expansion is taking place at a time of increasing awareness of occupational health matters and has involved very high capital expenditures and detailed planning related to the ventilation system to endeavour the provision of an acceptable environment. The paper discusses the ventilation systems, established and proposed, and relates them to historical and current data on mine air contaminants.

Seabed polymetallic nodules, which contain significant quantities of metals key to electrification (nickel, cobalt, copper, and manganese) can be processed using several different metallurgical processing options, including direct smelting and subsequent hydrometallurgical refining of the copper/nickel matte, ammoniacal leaching (gas reduction or Cuprion), and acid leaching (often reductive). Many of these approaches suffer from reduced cobalt extraction, difficult physical performance, or overall circuit complexity in general, leading to increased risk to the overall project. SGS has considered pressure acid leaching of nodules for further investigation, as publicly shared data on this processing route stems from the 1970s and 1980s and is not always easily accessible. This paper will detail the series of tests conducted and provide updated results obtained (high Ni/Co/Cu recovery with limited Mn/Fe), as well as comment on the potential treatment options on the product solution and residue.

Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) evaluated the impact of potential shale gas well breaches and subsequent gas inflow on selected mine ventilation systems of operating longwall panels using a 1:30 scaled Longwall Instrumented Aerodynamic Model (LIAM) and Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) as a tracer gas. A series of tests were performed at 340, 400, and 500 cfm inflow levels utilizing different mine ventilation scenarios. Results suggest that the breached gas can be diluted to meet statutory levels when the longwall panel is adequately ventilated. The results enhance the understanding of the gas inflow and mine ventilation system interaction and provide critical information to the industry and regulatory agencies for improving miners’ safety.

Despite reef structures being relatively common in carbonate rocks around the world, tunneling experience in reefs is extremely rare. Impacts and risks associated with reef tunneling through these geologic features were also relatively unknown. A new reef was encountered during construction of the Lower Pogues Run Tunnel in Indianapolis, exposed over 5,000 linear feet along the alignment, resulting in adverse impacts on construction. Analysis of investigation data and construction from this encounter provide insight into the identification and characterization of reefs along tunnel alignments as well as the potential impacts on construction for future tunneling within reef structures.

Overexposure to hazardous noise has been found in most mining sectors, with up to 100% of the surveyed workforce experiencing a noise dose that exceeds the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) permissible exposure level (PEL). As a result, miners show elevated rates of hearing impairment of 70-90% by retirement age. To help manage noise exposures, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed the Determination of Sound Exposures (DOSES) software and implementation guide for use by mine management and safety personnel. This paper describes the development, functions and basic operation of the initial-release version of DOSES. A revised version is being developed to incorporate additional user-suggested functions, and its development and implementation to assess noise control solutions will be described in a future article. The software relies on a time-motion study that profiles the worker’s daily activities. Observations about the worker’s location and tasks or other activities are recorded along with the start and end time, to determine the duration of the tasks so they can later be matched up with the noise data. The software gives the user the option of assessing dose relative to the MSHA PEL, the action level or the NIOSH recommended exposure limit. The software generates a variety of interactive on-screen displays showing where, when and how the worker’s noise dose accumulated. It also can generate customizable printed reports. These outputs can be used to highlight the tasks, locations and times that are associated with the greatest amount of a worker’s noise exposure. DOSES simplifies and streamlines the record keeping and analysis associated with time-motion studies and worker noise exposures, so mine management can make engineering noise control or administrative control decisions to limit the noise overexposure of their workers.
