The study of soft soil (wastes above the rock bed) an issue of great importance in civil engineering, is usually addressed by drilling boreholes. This method is rather expensive and time-consuming and although the information obtained is usually accurate, on the other hand it is much localized. Recently published researches have demonstrated the ability of the combination of geophysical exploration methods to estimate the thickness of deposited wastes, which provides the layered structure of the study area and certain, method depended, mechanical parameters as well. By theory, the frequency of resonance of an upper layer is a function of its thickness and the average shear velocity in it. Furthermore, the application of H/V spectral ratios of micro-tremors is a fast, straight forward and cost effective methodology, yielding the determination of the main resonant frequency of the soil. Based on this framework, 20 microtremor measurements have been carried out in a Landfill in Heraklion-Crete. Some of these measurements were deliberately close to drilled sites, where the basement had been reached. Three electrical resistivity tomographies were also used, in order to define the landfill structure such as, thickness, determination of different wastes distribution in the study area and other parameters. In addition, estimation of predictive Vs using empirical relationship between shear velocity and penetration resistance (SPT?s) were also conducted. Knowing the thickness and the resonant frequency, we estimated the shear (Vs) velocity of the waste cover. The final Vs model was confirmed using the results from the Vs-SPT correlation. The combinative implementation of the above mentioned geophysical and geotechnical methods have successfully defined geometrical and geotechnical/geophysical characteristics of the area under investigation in a fast and cost effective way.

Gasification of carbonaceous energy carriers with simultaneousCO2 removal is a new and interesting alternative e.g. ZECA [1],HyPr-Ring [2], AER [3]. In the ZECA process lime supported Hydrogen generation from Methane is a basic process unit and the Hypr-RING process investigates Hydrogen generation from hard coal with addition of lime. Here the main objective is a further development of the AER process. High energetic efficiencies for gasification in the range of 90 % can be achieved if the humidity of the energy carrier is already sufficient for steam reforming reaction. The aim of the overall process is upgrading coals and biomass yielding into three valuable products: • A fuel gas ready for power generation • A CO2gas stream containing >95%, ready for transportation to disposal or chemical fixation • A pre-calcined feed for cement clinkering consisting ofCaO and coal ash Thus power generation and gasification are independent. A promising industrial application is the combination of gasification and cement production. Then only one additional reactor is required and the precalcination mass flows have to be increased.

Electronic ore sorting is a coarse particle beneliciating process which performs a function which in the past was primarily achieved through the use of hand picking belts. Photometric ore sorting is capable of separating waste from mineral bearing rock having a distinct difference in surface light reflectance levels. This type of ore sorter can be applied to gold and silver ores which are contained in quartz veining. Photometric ore sorting has been used at gold mines in South Africa as well as the Black Pinc silver mine in Montana. A new ore sorter has recently been developed with precious metal ores in mind. This ore sorter is capable of sorting ores on both photometric and conductivity sensing parameters. The first production machine has been installed at a gold mine near Beardmore, Ontario and currently is being used to process low grade waste dumps.

1. INTRODUCTION For Europe the Arlberg road tunnel signifies the elimination of the largest traffic barrier between Bucharest and Paris in the east-west transversal. Apart from that the tunnel will serve the feeder system to the two north-south links Ulm - Milano, and the Brenner motorway, and links the Inntal and the Rheintal motorways closer together.. Thus, the supraregional road system carrying traffic through the Tyrol and Vorarlberg will considerably be emproved by the Arlberg road tunnel. 2. THE PROJECT The 16.1 km contract section of expressway S 16 includes a ramp section of approximately 2.6 km, the access points at St.Anton and at Langen, and the main 13.98 km section of the road tunnel. This section cuts the link between St.Anton and Langen by 3.7 km, and saves 475 m in altitude. The Arlberg road tunnel is planned to have two tubes with two lanes each. In the first stage the southern tube was under construction. Its traffic capacity is 1,800 car units per hour. The tunnel has a cross section of 9o to 103 m2. The sloping gradients are by 1.3o and 1.67 per cent. Fresh air is supplied and used air removed through a ventilation system, fed at the portals and through two vertical ventilation shafts. One of them, at Maienwasen, is 222 m deep, its cross section 66.5 m2. The diameter in clear is 8.32 m. The vertical shaft Albona is 736 m deep, the diameter in clear is 7.37 m. The tunnels is 9,4o m wide, providing for a 7.5o m roadway plus o.95 m sidewalks on each side of it. 4.7o m above the traffic area the conduits for fresh and used air. Introduction The domestic copper industry has suffered for some time from declining ore grades; rising costs associated with conventional mining, milling, smelting and refining; tightening environmental restrictions; and shrinking markets due to materials substitution. Ore grade depletion is a major problem. It is illustrated by the decline in average copper yield shown in Fig. 1. From 1979, copper grade has dropped 60%, lowering yields from 1.2% to 0.49% (Sousa, 1981). The US copper industry is taking drastic measures to enhance its competitive posture and to guarantee its future worldwide position. In a sense, this involves a general restructuring of the processing philosophy of US copper producers. Judging from recent trends, this restructuring relates to the application of solution mining techniques to the treatment of copper ores and low grade waste material. Recovering copper by leaching techniques has been practiced for centuries. As early as the mid-16th century, some Hungarian copper mines were recycling copper bearing leach solutions through waste heaps (Nash, 1912). In the US, recovering copper from dilute mine waters has been carried out for more than 100 years. There are, however, certain technical innovations that have elevated the importance of solution mining as a process for copper recovery. These include: • Advances in solvent extract-electrowinning (SX-EW); • Developments in acid and acid ferric cure processes for oxide and mixed oxide sulfide ores; • Improvements in heap and dump construction; and • Advances in in situ leaching technology. Generally, solution mining enjoys certain intrinsic advantages over conventional mining and milling. Compared to conventional milling, the combined capital and operating costs of leaching facilities are normally lower, start-up times are faster, and the leaching operation usually has less impact on the environment. Furthermore, solution mining represents an expedient way of extracting metals from small shallow deposits, and is particularly suited to the treatment of low grade sources. And, in the case of waste dump leaching, there is a tremendous resource in-place that has the mining cost already off the books. This paper updates current US copper solution mining trends. Solution mining systems Schlitt (1980) summarized the characteristics of the principle leach systems in the US. He pointed out that the wide variations in copper deposits make solution mining a more site-specific activity than conventional mining and milling. Heap leaching is usually selected for moderate to high grade ores having a copper mineralization that is amenable to acid leaching (oxides, silicates and certain sulfides). Higher grade ores mined specifically for heap leaching are usually treated to optimize copper extraction, therefore, crushing and some pretreatment (acid curing) may be justified. On the other hand, dump leaching practice usually involves leaching low grade waste rock placed on large dumps as dictated by topography and haulage costs. Mine waste is therefore treated in an uncrushed run-of-mine condition. Finally, in situ leaching is appropriate for either very deep ore bodies or for recovering copper from low grade rock left behind in abandoned pit walls, stopes, and subsidence zones from earlier mining activities. True in-situ solution mining should be defined as the leaching of ore in its original geologic setting. Heap leaching Heap leaching has a long history as a hydrometallurgical process for copper recovery. The methodology of heap leaching established at Rio Tinto in Spain more than 300 years ago is basically the same as that used today. Asbestos analysis is conceptually simple. The objective, in most environmental analyses, is to determine the number of asbestos fibers per unit area or volume in a sample. The sample may be a consumer product, an ambient air sample, or a water sample. This determination is complicated by several factors: (1) sample collection and preparation, (2) counting techniques, and (3) operational definitions of asbestos in use. Three different definitions have been used in the study of environmental samples and are summarized in Table 1. The analytical procedure and detail required in the analysis vary with the definition of asbestos. Accordingly, this may be the only type of environmental analysis where the definition of a substance dictates the choice of analytical methods, and the rigor demanded of the analysis. Lead, arsenic, or beryllium are sub- stances having a constant definition and the method of analysis chosen depends on the concentration and precision required. However, the meaning of the term asbestos fiber is dependent on the eye of the beholder. Macroscopically, asbestos has certain physical properties that make it highly useful. Rockforming minerals do not display similar characteristics. Now, the question arises as to how three definitions of asbestos came into being. This is a result of two factors: (1) the definition of asbestos on any scale intrinsically involves the morphology or shape of the material, and (2) the advent of the transmission electron microscope permits detection of asbestos fibers and other mineral fragments in a size range where the physical properties of asbestos such as tensile strength, flexibility, or thermal resistance are difficult, if not impossible, to measure. There is a good deal of controversy about which definition is most appropriate for regulatory purposes because of a lack of appropriate health effects data (Cooper, 1978). Most differences of opinion center on the questions surrounding the following: 11 Morphology-Is a 3:l aspect ratio an appropriate medical or physical lower limit for the definition of an asbestos fiber? 2) Length-Are asbestos fibers shorter than some arbitrary length (5 pm) as hazardous as longer fibers? 3) Mineralogy-Is the mineralogical distinction between asbestos and nonasbestos minerals medically significant? While these questions are directly resolvable only with the biological and health effects data, ultimately such data reflects the ability of analytical procedures to fully characterize the materials used in health effects studies on animal models, and to monitor the exposure to particulates with different physical attributes in the workplace or community (Cooper, 1978). The following sections outline the analytical problems involved in distinguishing the asbestos and nonasbestos varieties of the same mineral; the analytical procedures available for identifying asbestos and measuring its concentration in environmental samples; the ability of these methods to distinguish asbestos fibers from nonasbestos particles; and their precision and reproducibility. Finally, we suggest some future directions in terms of definition and procedure that would greatly improve the quality of such analyses. ASBESTOS VS. Introduction Ring roller mills are efficient size reduction machines embodying the following machine functions: 1) Size Reduction: from a feed size of 2 in. to various size products as fine as 400 mesh, or granulation from 2 in. to 6 mesh containing a minimum of fines. 2) Drying: fluid bed drying of wet feed materials. 3) Conveying: negative pressure air system results in dust-free conveying. 4) Beneficiation: liberation and removal of foreign materials from the auxiliary bottom discharge simultaneously while grinding. Operation Operation of the roller mill system, Figs. 78 and 79, is completely automatic. A feeder introduces raw material into the grinding chamber in the base of the roller mill at a rate determined by pressure variations within the roller mill as material is ground and air conveyed away. The feeder will be activated by the reduced static pressure and introduce unground material into the system, thereby maintaining a constant differential pressure. Plows located ahead of each grinding roll direct the material upward and between the grinding rolls and the bull ring where it is ground to size. The grinding rolls are free to swing out centrifugally, which forces them to bear upon and grind the raw material. Being free to pivot axially, the rolls automatically assume the proper position for grinding and need no adjustment to compensate for wear. Rotation of the rolls is by rolling contact. Once ground to size, material is swept out of the mill by the controlled air flow from the centrifugal main mill fan. Air suspended, the ground material passing through the adjustable spinner separator. In the separator, an accurate size classification is made which allows product-size material to be conveyed away from the roller mill while oversize material is returned internally for additional grinding. By varying the speed of the separator drive, more or less cyclonic action is achieved at this location, effectively controlling product size. Product sized material is removed from the airstream by the cyclone collector. Typically, a conveyor or product storage bin will be located to accept the product as it exits from the bottom of the cyclone collector.

Radiation protection in uranium mines and nuclear reactors is compared, with the objective of determining if any radiation protection practices which have worked well in one area can be adapted to the other area, especially from reactors to mines since radiation protection is more highly developed in reactors. Several areas are identified where improvements can be made in radiation protection in mines, the most important being improvement in ventilation at the workplace, greater attention to special monitoring during upset conditions, and a need for a substantial increase in radiation protection staff. It is concluded that, although considerable room exists for improvement, the general approach to radiation protection presently being followed seems appropriate for the circumstances encountered in mining.

Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) has became an attractive alternative technology to be a new process to recover metal, of which can be substitute the existing Leaching/Solvent extraction processes. Solvent extraction of metallic ions is a technically important and also well-established process that is used in the chemical and hydrometallurgical industries.1 Solvent extraction techniques use the chelation of metallic ions dissolved in liquid solution with organic ligands. Conventional solvent-extraction technique needs large amount of organic solvents and often creates environmental problems.2 More environment-friendly technology is needed nowadays, and there have been increasing attentions to extract metal ions by SFE. CO2 becomes one of the most notable alternative organic solvents due to its nonflammable, nontoxic, nonpolluting, and relatively inexpensive properties with its moderate critical point (73.8 bar, 31.06 °C). Many works have been reported in metal extraction under the supercritical CO2 (scCO2) solvent.3-5 In this study, to recover cobalt from wastes especially from spent lithium ion battery scrap, we selected two ligands ? Cyanex 272 and DEA (diethylamine) for the metal extraction in scCO2. Cyanex 272 is a commercially available extractant along with its series, Cyanex 301 and Cyanex 302. Smart and coauthors measured the metal extracting abilities of these three extractants, and found that Cyanex 301 and Cyanex 302 extracted metal ions much better than Cyanex 272 in the scCO2 solvent.10 The pH of water contacted with high pressure CO2 (70-200 bar, 25-70 oC) is about 2.8-2.95 based on the calculation and the measurement.6-7 Cyanex 272 is known to be less effective as a metal extractant in this low pH environment compared with other Cyanex series. However, when DEA is added to metal extraction reaction with Cyanex-272, DEA works as a strong base to Cyanex 272 converting Cyanex 272 to a deprotonated form (Figure 1), which results in an easy formation of metal complex and the enhanced extraction rate of metal ion.8 Therefore, the purpose of this paper is the metal extraction from spent lithium ion battery waste using scCO2 with Cyanex 272 and DEA.

Arizona is a sun-belt growth-region where 13 tons of industrial (nonmetallic) minerals is being produced annually per capita. In 19B5, non-fuel mineral production reached $1.532 billion and consisted of metallic ($1.277 billion-84%) and nonmetallic ($253.5 million-16%) earth materials. Sand-and-gravel value was second only to copper. over 90% of the value of nonmetallics is represented by combined sand, gravel, cement, and lime. The remaining less than 10% ($25 million) was attributed mainly to stone, specific volcanic products (cinder, perlite, pumice), gypsum, clays, salt, zeolite, and others. Current interest in industrial-mineral development in Arizona is high, especially in the geologically complex Basin and Range region.

INRTODUCTION Annual coal production rose to over 1.03 billion st (931 Mt) in 1990. At the same time the number of mines producing this increased tonnage has decreased over 60% in a 30-year period, from 9230 mines in 1960.1 The great increase in production made possible through continued mechanization requires greatly improved loading facilities just to get coal away from the mine. Also the trend to combine production from more than one mine and cleaning it in a single preparation plant continues. A recent census of US coal preparation plants indicated that 310 plants were in operation.2 In addition to increased loading capacity, storage and blending facilities are more necessary both at the producer and user end. In this climate of rapidly changing technology, any written account is faced with the possibility of obsolescence before its appearance. Thus, this chapter seeks to define the common and current practice in coal loading and storage facilities with the full knowledge that this practice is an ever-moving target. FUNDAMENTALS OF COAL STORAGE Storage of coal is becoming an increasingly important part of coal handling systems at mines, particularly since the advent of the unit-train concept in transportation. In order to take advantage of reduced transportation rates on trainload shipments of coal offered by unit-train movement, operators have found that storage is an economic necessity. In unit-train practice, large predetermined quantities must be loaded in relatively short periods of time, as opposed to conventional practice where coal is loaded at a speed dependent on the production capacity of the mine and/or the cleaning capacity of the preparation plant. Clean coal storage is generally practiced in order to accomplish one, or a combination, of the following objectives: 1. To load out promptly and economically. 2. To facilitate blending in order to even out chemical and physical inconsistencies and to prepare desired products or to attain maximum product uniformity. 3. To store certain sizes whose prices and market demand fluctuate with seasons and to permit shipping in good weather. Coal storage, then, is necessary and desirable, both from production and utilization standpoints. There are, however, several undesirable aspects attendant to the storage of coal, the most important of which are oxidation and spontaneous combustion, changes in properties which may affect utilization of the coal, degradation of coal due to rehandling, and the added cost of handling and storage facilities.

5.1 INTRODUCTION There are several types of surface ground disturbances, each of which is immediately transmitted to surface structures and causes damage of various forms, depending on the location of the structures in the subsidence basin. Many criteria have also been proposed for defining the potential structural damage. All of these topics will be discussed in this chapter. 5.2 TYPES OF GROUND DAMAGES There are two types of ground damage, continuous and dis¬continuous, that could inflict damages to surface structures. Dis¬continuous ground damage is open fractures of various degrees. Four types of fractures are commonly seen (Brauner, 1973b): 1. Fissures or cracks. Cracks are the most common form of ground damage and range from completely closed to several feet wide. Surface cracks are most prominent when the ratio of mining depth to mining height is smaller than 30 to 50 times mining height. Cracks initiate parallel to, but ahead of the moving long¬wall face at some intervals when the depth-to-mining height ratio is less than 25 to 30. As the face continues to move, they open up and then close gradually, and in most cases eventually close up completely when the face moves farther away. Sometimes when the depth-to-mining height ratio is larger, cracks may initiate be¬hind the face and go through the same cycle. Cracks are also more likely to occur in the hill when the face is moving in the uphill direction. Cracks also occur at or near both sides of the panel edges. Those cracks tend to remain open permanently. When the surface is covered with grass or other vegetation, cracks of less than 1 to 2 in. wide usually do not penetrate it and become invisible on the surface. 2. Steps. A step may occur when the longwall face stops abruptly if the mining depth-to-mining height ratio is less than 20. Steps may also occur along the panel edges. Steps also range from a few inches to a few feet in width and depth. If planes of weakness are oriented favorably, ground will slide along these planes and form steps on the surface. 3. Cave-in pits. These result from local collapse of the ground from the mine level to the surface when the mining depth is less than 150 ft and occur mostly above abandoned mined lands. They may be as large as 40 ft wide and deep. 4. Bumps (compression ridges). Bumps result from ground compression and occur mostly near panel center some time after mining. Bumps of up to 4 ft, but mostly 1 to 2 ft, have been identified. Continuous ground damage refers to the formation of the sub¬sidence basin where continuous nondestructive ground deforma¬tions occur. As mentioned earlier, continuous ground deforma¬tions associated with a subsidence basin include subsidence, slope, curvature, displacement, horizontal strain, twisting, and shearing. 5.3 TYPES OF SURFACE STRUCTURAL DAMAGES Both continuous and discontinuous ground disturbance cause damage to surface structures. A. Structural Damages Due to Discontinuous Ground Disturbance 1. Fissures or cracks. Open cracks can cause dislocation of surface structure if the gaps are sufficiently large so that the struc¬tural elements cannot resist but fail. On the other hand, minor cracks affect only the appearance, and not the structural integrity. 2. Steps. When a surface structure is located on a step, some portions of the structure lose support and become overhung. In the case of a residential house, there will likely be many open frac¬tures in the overhung portions, followed in severe cases by sepa¬ration of the superstructure at the edge of the step. 3. Cave-in pits. If the caved-in pit is larger than the surface structure, the structure will drop into the pit and become unstable. If the caved-in pit is smaller than the surface structure, the struc¬ture may either become overhung or lose support in some portions. In either case, it is unsafe for use. 4. Bumps (compression ridges). Bumps will disrupt roadways or house floor. If located under supporting members of the struc¬tures, it may cause damages. B. Structural Damage Due to Continuous Ground Disturbances 1. Subsidence. Pure subsidence or uniform subsidence over an area does not cause any structural damage. However, if it becomes a topographical low area, it may be flooded with water and make the surface structures unusable. It must be noted that the flat bottom area at the center of the final supercritical subsidence basin does not reach that position suddenly. Rather, as shown in Fig. 3.1, it is subjected to the dynamic surface deformation asso¬ciated with the traveling subsidence basin before it is left behind to be part of the flat-bottom area. Therefore any structure located at the center of the final supercritical subsidence basin must be able to resist the dynamic surface deformation in order not to be dam¬aged. 2. Slope. Ground slope will induce tilting of the structure. Tall structures with small base areas, such as water towers, chimneys, and power transmission towers are most sensitive to ground slope. If the ground slope is such that if after tilting the center of the gravity of the tilted structure falls outside the base area, it will topple, but this seldom occurs. Ground slope will change the designed slope of a buried trans¬portation pipeline, either increasing or decreasing the original slope depending on whether the ground slope coincides with or opposes the original slope. There are maximum allowable final slopes for various types of transporting materials. Ground slope also affects highways and railways. There is a maximum allowable final slope for a railway because tractive effort increases 1/1000 of its weight for every increase of 1/1000 in grade. 3. Curvature. There are positive (convex) and negative (con¬cave) curvatures. When a surface structure is located on a positive curvature, both ends become unsupported, followed by bending upward at the midportion. The top portion is subjected to more severe stretching than the lower one. As a result, vertical cracks with a wider gap at the top occur at the window, door frames, on the walls, and at -the wall joints. V-shaped cracks appear at the

Damen Avenue to Roosevelt Road, the Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP), a Deep Tunnel Project for the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago consists of 25,189 lin. ft. of 32 ft. tunnel with 1 ft. 0 in. concrete liner throughout. The 17,100 ft. main tunnel connects at both ends with two other Deep Tunnel contracts. A branch tunnel connecting to the mainstream tunnel, commences approximately 4,140 ft. from the construction shaft and runs 8,089 ft. south and terminates at the Racine Avenue Pumping Station. Shaft work consists of one 28 ft. 6 in. diameter construction shaft, one 3 ft. 6 in. diameter access shaft and 25 drop shafts-four of which have vent shafts. The drop shafts vary in diameter from 4 ft. 0 in. to 17 ft. 0 in. All shafts vary in depth to invert from 225 ft. to 235 ft. Work has been underway for 16 months and as of this writing the construction shaft and access shaft are complete. Seven shafts have been excavated and concreting operations have started in four of them. The starter tunnel is complete, the mining machine has mined 250 lin. ft. and the muck removal system is in full operation. The contractor for the project is a joint venture of Paschen/Morrison-Knudsen/Kenny. Paschen Contractors, Inc., Chicago, Illinois is the sponsor. The total contract amount is $107,837,300.00.

Both bolt profile shape and spacing (rib spacing) have been found to influence the bonding capacity of the grouted rock bolt. The bolt surface profile configuration has greater importance to rock bolting in strata reinforcement in mining than the steel rebar used in civil engineering construction. This is because a rock bolt in mining usually is subjected to greater dynamic loading than the steel rebar in civil engineering construction. The increased bonding capacity of a bolt is important when supported ground is either heavily fractured, faulted or the supported ground is of soft formation, typically that of coal measure rocks. Past laboratory studies have identified the bolt profile spacing as of significant relevance to bolt resin rock bonding increase, however, no attempt has been made to determine the optimum spacing between the bolt profiles spacing. Accordingly, a series of laboratory tests were carried out on 22 mm core diameter bolts, commonly used in Australian mines, installed in cylindrical steel sleeve. The study was carried out using both push and pull testing methods. The push test was carried out in 150 mm long sleeves while the pull testing was conducted in 115 mm long sleeves. Profile spacing tested include, 12.5, 25.0, 37.5, and 50 mm lengths. Additional studies undertaken include modelling the profile of the load-displacement data of pull testing. Bolts with a profile spacing of 37.5 mm were found to provide optimum load bearing capacity as compared to other tested profile spacings.

Molybdenum, the 42nd element in the periodic table, is now a very important metal in industry of the United States and the world. Chemically, it is a very complex element having valences of 0, +2, +3, +4, +5, and +6, and can exist as a mixture of these valences in many compounds. It was discovered and separated by Scheele in 1778. At the present time, molybdenite is the only important commercial source of molybdenum. Molybdenum occurs in some 12-14 different recognized minerals, but practically all of the production is molybde¬nite. As late as 1915, it was considered a rare metal. Germany made extensive use of it during the first world war, which resulted in the establishment of a molybdenum industry in the United States at Cli¬max, Colo., in 1917. It was not until the mid-1920s when its introduc¬tion to steelmaking developed for the US automobile industry that the metal gained important acceptance. The first notable example was the Willis-Saint Claire automobile introduced in 1921 by C. Harold Willis, formerly chief metallurgist for Ford Motor Co. Molybdenum has also been produced in the US from wulfenite (PbMoO4) from Arizona and Nevada, and a small amount of molyb¬denite was produced up to the early 1970s as a coproduct from two molybdenum-bismuth mines in Quebec, Canada. The first byproduct production of molybdenite from a copper con¬centrating operation was achieved at Cananea, Sonora, Mexico, and was followed shortly by the Utah division of Kennecott Copper Co. in the mid-1930s. This section of the Handbook is divided into four main subdivi¬sions: Chapter 2, which deals with the concentration and recovery of molybdenite from primary molybdenum ores; Chapter 3, which deals with the recovery and separation of molybdenite as a byproduct from copper production; Chapter 4, which deals with the conversion practices employed for converting molybdenite to the oxide or metal form; and Chapter 5, which covers the uses of molybdenum in steel¬making, chemicals, pigments, lubrication, catalysts, etc. The Free World molybdenum production, for the past eight years from all sources, is shown in Table 1. 2. Primary Molybdenite Ores General In 1978 there were four primary molybdenite recovery plants in operation: Climax, Endako, Quests, and Henderson. For over half a century the Climax mine has been by far the largest and most important source of molybdenum in the world. During the early 1970s a few primary molybdenite mines in British Columbia were shut down due to adverse economical conditions. The largest of these was British Columbia Molybdenum, formerly owned by Kennecott Copper Corp. The Climax plant and operations are described in detail and the opera¬tions of the other plants are summarized following a general discussion of recovering molybdenite from primarily molybdenite ores. Recovery of molybdenite as a byproduct will be taken up in Chapter 3. Geology Molybdenite production from mines in which it is the sole or preponderantly important mineral is confined to ore bodies in granites or igneous-type rocks or pegmatite dikes. More than one state of mineralization is sometimes present as at Climax, York, Hardy, and Questa. In the case of Climax, important byproduct recovery of tung¬sten, tin, pyrite, and monazite is also attained. The molybdenite is commonly disseminated very finely in the siliceous granitic gangue but does occur in stringers and blebs in silicified mineral solution channels. Treatment of Primary Molybdenum Ores All primary molybdenum ores are low in molybdenite, the content ranging from less than 0.20% MoS2 to a high of about 0.40% MoS2. A high resistance to grinding is a common ore characteristic combined with a habit of very fine dissemination of molybdenite in the siliceous portion of the ore. Because of low MoS2 content, high hardness, and fine dissemination of molybdenite in primary ores, it has been necessary to develop a special mill treatment which yields an accepta¬ble recovery at a reasonably low milling cost. Essentially, the treatment consists of intensive rougher flotation at a relatively coarse grind with production of a low grade rougher froth containing a substantial percentage of the molybdenite in the form of low grade middling particles, followed with multistage regrinding to liberate the locked molybdenite and several stages of flotation cleaning to produce a finished grade concentrate. Rougher flotation on pulp ground to ap¬proximately 35 mesh is common practice, even if complete liberation of molybdenite from siliceous gangue may require regrinding to 200 mesh. The flotation of middling particles with a very low content of molybdenite in the rougher flotation step has been made possible by the application of a combination of reagents first developed at the Climax mill and used with some modification in the treatment of all primary molybdenum ores. Increased emphasis has been placed on recycling consumer and industrial waste products. This trend has created a new industry that is focused on recovery/ separation of byproducts from waste material. As a result, interest has increased in the development of separation systems designed for the recycling industry. Much work has been done in this area. However, existing techniques developed for minerals beneficiation are often ignored. An example of is the foundry industry. There are currently more than 3,000 foundries in operation throughout the United States. Each consumes between 9 and 900 t/d (10 and 1,000 stpd) of sand for mold production. Either silica, chromite or zircon is, used in various combinations with chemical or clay binders. After casting, the sands are typically discarded into a landfill. This practice has become an environmental concern, especially the disposal of chromite and zircon. Silica sand is not environmentally sensitive. But it is used in greater abundance (6 to 7 Mt/a or 6.6 to 7.7 million stpy)and thus has prohibitive haulage and landfill costs. Current technology for sand reclamation involves thermal treatment to remove residual binders followed by dry mechanical attritioning (Leidel, 1993; Klein, 1994). This approach results in high losses due to fines generation and high costs associated with thermal treatment. As a result, this approach has shown only limited success. Stringent regulations are also affecting the disposal of secondary materials, such as plastics and metals. This is particularly true for the ferrous and nonferrous scrap metal industry. It plays a major role in industrial recycling of steel, aluminum and copper. Applications such as wire recycling present challenging problems since a hazardous byproduct (plastic insulation) is generated by the recycling.

The Florida Institute of Phosphate Research (FIPR) is an independent, state of Florida research agency. It was created in 1978 to conduct research to enhance the competitiveness of the Florida phosphate industry. The institute also conducts research to prevent, minimize or rectify environmental impacts caused by the industry. And it helps educate the public concerning phosphate-related technology and issues. FIPR is funded by a severance tax on the industry and is governed by a five-member board of directors appointed by the governor. FIPR's research is playing a role in enhancing the competitiveness of the Florida phosphate industry. Its technology research program seeks to improve surface mining and pipeline transportation while reducing the energy cost for pumping phosphate matrix. It is developing new and improved methods of beneficiation and fertilizer production. This includes new process flowsheets and on-line analyzers and process control methods. FIPR is also developing uses for the phosphogypsum byproduct of phosphoric acid production and evaluating the risks associated with its uses.

Groove deepening (deepening of a groove in rock by successive passes of a rock cutting tool) is a potential operational feature associated with tunnel boring machines. Little research has been undertaken in this area which is of direct practical relevance to the design and application of tunnel boring machines. Laboratory experiments using single, double and triple disc arrays have revealed an important fundamental cycle of events associated with disc cutters when progressively deepening a groove. Furthermore, in contrast to pick cutters, groove deepening by discs is shown to be an efficient operation. This can be directly attributed to the increased interaction between disc cutters due to the increase in magnitude of lateral forces generated as a groove is deepened.

Although temperature is known to have a substantial effect on many processes, this parameter has been widely dismissed as insignificant for mineral comminution. For this reason, temperature effects on grinding have largely escaped notice. However, it has been observed that processing plants which are subjected to large seasonal temperature variations show a change in performance which appears to be due to changing feed temperatures. The general effect is an increase of the specific energy consumption as the temperature decreases. In autogenous mills, an increased rate of production of critical-size material has also been observed. This is due, at least in part, to changing rheological conditions in the mill, with the slurry viscosity increasing markedly at low temperatures. Mechanical changes in the rock with temperature, such as increased brittle fracture, is also responsible for a portion of the observed seasonal effect, and may account for this phenomenon being observed only in certain plants.

A distribution-free approach is developed for estimating a bivariate distribution function for an ore deposit in terms of the experimental grade correlogram and experimental "weight functions" of the deposit. These weight functions are calculated as part of the approximation used in the mononodal cutoff concept. Use of this method obviates the need to transform to an isofactorial bivariate model. The method is illustrated for two examples, where the bivariate distributions are supposedly known : (a) the bivariate normal distribution and (b) the bivariate lognormal distribution. It is shown that the estimate of the underlying bivariate distribution is optimal when working at the mononodal cutoff, as can be anticipated theoretically. The approximation decreases in quality on either side of the mononodal cutoff, but still remains acceptable as a first estimate of the actual bivariate distribution.
