"At present scenario, there has been an increasing demand in the usage of blend coal in power sector; regardless of how, specific knowledge on burning and ignition characteristics and their interactive effects is stingy. In this work a detailed investigation was therefore taken up to study in detail the combustion characteristics of selected coal samples and their blends. Certain parameters were believed to have significant effects on combustion characteristics of individual coal and their blend. Major parameters identified for this purpose included proximate analysis, combustion conditions, heating rate, reaction regions, blending ratios, ignition condition, reactivity (or reaction rate) and burnout temperatures. With the help of these parameters, thermal features and reaction kinetics of the individual and blended samples were investigated through a qualitative and quantitative thermo-gravimetric analysis of two different individual coals and their blend carried out in an oxygen atmosphere from ambient to 800 0C at a constant heating rate of 10 K/min. A significant difference in terms of rate of mass loss with temperature correlated from Arrhenius expression along with coal-coal blend interactions and deviation from their expected behaviour, have been observed between the kinetics of individual and blend samples, the latter showing better ignition performance and comprehensive combustion phase. It was also found that particles having the lowest percentages of volatile matter and ash could possibly be blended with particles having high ash and volatile matter to meet the required burning condition which can be effective in terms of cost savings, improved fuel economy, reduced undesirable exhaust emissions and improved safety of coal burning equipment. Experimental results further indicated that individual samples and coal blend samples have different combustion features in terms of residue left, peak temperatures and activation energies. Thermodynamic activation parameters such as activation energy, pre-exponential factor and order of reaction were computed from the thermal data using the modified form of non-isothermal methods. INTRODUCTION Coal has been the most significant source of energy for India and would remain so at least for the next few decades. About 60-65% of the electricity produced in India is from coal fired power plants. Indian coal is of drift origin and of high ash content. Ash content of the coal burnt in power plants in India is in the range of 30-45%, most of it being Run-of-Mine coal. Most of the power plants in India source their coal from number of mines, most common being multiple sourcing. Usually coal from each source [1] is burnt separately. For various reasons mostly associated with logistics, burning of blended coal is rarely practiced. Blending of coal is practised mainly for improving the quality of available coal and meets the shortage of coal supply. Blending technique is generally practised in power industries to reduce the cost of power generation along with mitigating combustion performance or slagging problem ensuring consistency in as fired coal quality and also for environmental compliance. Blending good quality imported coal can improve coal quality and helps in preserving indigenous coal resources for longer period [2]. Use of blended coal shall reduce load on all boiler components (Mill, CHP, Boiler, AHP) & reduce O&M cost and increase the availability. The main purpose of blending is to get a blended as fired coal having ash, volatile matter and gross calorific value close to design coal and the two coals are to be blended in such ratio proportions that resultant coal blend have desired ash, volatile matter and gross calorific value [3]. For a coal to be blended certain parameters have to be considered to get compatibility with respect to combustibility ( Burn ability) of coal, grindability ( HGI), ash fusion behavior, swelling characteristics of coal, need to be checked"

Microsilica or silica fume is a waste material generated from silicon or silicon-containing alloys producing electric furnaces. One of its usage is as an additive in the concrete production. This investigation describes a process to use microsilica as a feed material to produce fine silicon carbide. A thermal plasma reactor is used to convert this waste material into a value added ceramic. Details of the theoretical considerations, experimental work, and characterization are presented in this work

Since 1900, smelters have produced in Canada over 10 million tonnes of iron silicate waste slag containing significant quantities of nickel, cobalt and copper. The slag is reduced with aluminum and calcium oxide additions to produce a copper, nickel, and cobalt enriched alloy and an obsidian slag. It was found that the obsidian slag contained very low copper, nickel, and cobalt contents, indeed below 0.06% of each the base metals. These metals have been collected in a type of ferroalloy with up to 1.6% Cu, 2.1% Ni, and 0.7% Co. These alloys can be recycled according to standard procedures in base metal smelters. Surprisingly, the obsidian slag was found to display good cementitious and pozzolanic properties, which is a requirement for cement production. The strength producing properties of the obsidian slag are considered to be exceptional at the 28 day standard test age. In most cases, the obsidian concrete is characterized by significantly greater strengths than control concrete tests and concrete containing fly ash or blast furnace slag. Compressive strength data at 365 days for the obsidian concrete is impressive.

Editor's Note: For purposes of uniformity throughout this book, Coal Preparation, 5th Edition, the editors have advocated the use of the U.S.A. Sieve Series of testing sieves (see Table 6-2) as the testing sieves of modem choice. The adoption and use of the U.S.A. Sieve Series and its forerunner, the Tyler Standard Screen Scale, has for over seventy-five years introduced uniformity into reports; has simplified the comparison of results; and has provided control for operation of modem coal preparation circuits. While a full explanation of the differences, and more importantly the similarities of these two measuring systems cannot be stated here, it is felt that a brief clarification of terms is in order. The difference between the U.S.A. Sieve Series and the Tyler Standard Screen Scale Sieve Series is the identification method. Tyler Screen Scale sieves are identified by mesh designation with the width of opening varying by the square root of two, or 1.414 times the width of opening in the previous sieve. The U.S.A. Sieves are identified by openings in millimeters or microns and also arbitrary numbers which do not necessarily mean the mesh count; this series uses width of opening variations in the order of approximately the ratio of the fourth root of two, or 1.189. Tyler Standard Screen Scale and U.S.A. Sieves can be used interchangeably, and to avoid confusion the nameplate of all Tyler Screen Scale sieves show the U.S.A. Number, while all U.S.A. Sieves show Tyler Screen Scale mesh equivalent numbers on the nameplate. INTRODUCTION Sizing is the process of separating mixed mineral particles into groups of particles all of the same size, or into groups in which all particles range between definite maximum and minimum sizes. This chapter applies the modem mechanical screen and the liquid-solid cyclone (hydrocyclone) to the process of sizing solid particles as applied to coal preparation. Screening is a mechanical process that separates particles by size. Modem coal preparation is made possible by efficient sizing. Sizing of coal is defined in terms of the opening through which an individual particle will or will not pass, or as two openings, the larger of which passes the particle and the smaller of which retains the particle. Screening accomplishes sizing by passing coal of a wide range of sizes through a series of screens, each of a decreasing size. The individual screen discharges are then directed into different screen products for subsequent sale or processing. Screening in modem preparation plants is done for the following reasons: 1. Removal of fine coal before a size reduction step. 2. Size separation of the coal into a coarse and fine fraction for sized products or for processing in coarse and fine coal circuits. 3. Recovery of heavy media from heavy media coal cleaning circuits.

INTRODUCTION Dynamic (seismic or microseismic) methods of determining the stability of structures in rock are based on detecting and analyzing the characteristics of seismic energy that has originated from or traveled through the rock mass. This seismic energy can be in the form of naturally occurring rock noise energy resulting from structural adjustments within the rock or can be introduced into the structure by physical means, such as by blasting or impact. In either case, the seismic energy radiating through the rock mass can be detected using standard equipment and can be analyzed by established techniques to reveal a wide variety of information concerning the condition and stability of the rock mass through which the energy has traveled. In the following sections, the basic instrumentation required for seismic and microseismic studies is described, and some of the presently used applications of these methods are discussed to exemplify the state of the art. INSTRUMENTATION Seismic disturbances in a rock structure generate two types of seismic wave radiation, body waves and sometimes surface waves, which radiate outward in all direc¬tions from the source of the disturbance. Underground mining applications are generally concerned only with discerning the characteristics of the resulting body waves, i.e., the compressional (p-wave) and the shear (s-wave) energy. As these two forms of energy travel through the rock structure, the particles of the rock mass are caused to vibrate, and the vibration character¬istics resulting from each of the two types of wave are distinct. Some important differences are: 1) Compressional and shear waves travel at different velocities through the rock structure. 2) The frequency at which each wave causes particles to vibrate is different, and may range from about 50 to 100 000 Hz. 3) The amplitude or energy level of each wave is different, with the shear energy usually being the greatest. These differences form the basis for equipment se¬lection for individual studies and for modern data analysis techniques. The following sections describe the basic equipment necessary to detect and record seismic wave energy data and show several examples of analysis procedures and how these procedures have been used. In principle, seismic equipment is very simple. It consists of a geophone (or geophones) to detect the seismic energy vibration and convert that vibration to an electric signal, an amplification system to increase the level of that signal, and a means of monitoring and/or recording the signals detected. Fig. 1 is a block diagram of a typical system. The following sections offer a very brief discussion of system components and their individual functions. A more complete discussion is given by Blake, Leighton, and Duvall (1974). Geophones The function of the geophone is to detect the vibrations caused by the passing of the seismic wave energy and to convert that vibration into an electrical signal that displays both the amplitude and frequency characteristics of the vibration. Particle motion or vibration can be quantified and measured by measuring displacement, velocity, or acceleration of the particles. Thus, there are three types of geophones: displacement gages, velocity gages, and accelerometers. The choice of gage depends on the characteristic frequencies of the seismic energy to be monitored and the sensitivities of each type of geophone. In general, displacement gages are used for low-frequency monitoring (periods to 1.0 Hz), velocity gages for medium-frequency monitoring (1.0 to 250 Hz), and accelerometers for high-frequency monitoring (250 to 10 000+ Hz). Experience has shown that in underground studies, the choice of which gage to use lies between velocity gages and accelerometers. An easy, accurate method for selection of gage type is discussed by Blake, Leighton, and Duvall (1974). Once the type of geophone has been selected for use, it must be properly installed, and in the installation procedure the most important step is insuring that the gage is firmly attached to a competent portion of the rock structure. Poorly mounted geophones may entirely fail to recognize low-level seismic signals and will distort the information from signals they do see. Amplifiers Seismic events associated with mine structures occur over a very broad range of energy which results in a broad range of geophone output levels. In general, geophone output levels occur in the microvolt to low milli-volt range, and it is necessary to amplify these signals in order to drive recording or monitoring equipment. The method usually used to predict the direction of flow in a connecting airway is to conduct a survey of the two existing nodes to be connected by the new pressure airway. It is then assumed that the air will flow from the node with the measured higher pressure to the node with measured lower pressure. This paper examines this direction-of-flow problem using properties of the system characteristic curve for a two-terminal network and specifies some conditions that will ensure that the air will flow in the direction anticipated. It was concluded that the only requirement is that all characteristic curves of the fans in the network should be strictly decreasing. Five numerical examples illustrate some important proper- ties of the direction-of-flow problem.

Economically important heavy minerals have been studied in the sediments of offshore Alabama and Mississippi. Sandy samples have been collected from a 200 square mile area from Dauphin to Horn Islands. The minerals concentrate in sediments under 10-35 feet of water and may reach 2.4% by weight. The distribution of total heavies is related to the hydrodynamics of offshore Alabama-Mississippi; the greatest concentrations are in the Gulf where the longshore current is diverted from its westerly flow. Preliminary observations indicate that the distribution of individual minerals can be correlated with wave energy, particle size, specific gravity, and morphology of the mineral grains. The coarser, lighter minerals--kyanite, sillimanite and staurolite--are concentrated in relatively low energy areas in the Mississippi Sound and at the end of Dauphin Island in the Gulf; maximum concentration for each is 34.5%, 6.0% and 43.2%, respectively, of the heavy minerals. The smaller, more denseminerals--ilmenite, rutile, leucoxene, zircon and monazite--are concentrated in high energy areas in the Gulf; maximum concentration for each, respectively, is 42.0%, 5.9%, 9.652, 10.7% and 1.3% of the heavy minerals. On the basis of a minimum concentration of 1% heavy minerals, two areas have been identified and the total amounts of different minerals have been calculated to a depth of 25 feet of sediment. The data are preliminary and in no way indicate recoverable reserves, but they do show that on the order of 20 million tons of heavies exist. These deposits should be termed "indicated resources".

This project was developed at the PCS Phosphate Mine in Aurora, NC. This site includes a surface mining operation, beneficiation plant and chemical processing facility located in the coastal plain of eastern North Carolina. The phosphate ore being mined at this operation is a 10 to 12 meter (35 to 40 foot) thick colloidal deposit located approximately 30 meters (100 feet) below the ground surface. The ore is pumped to the beneficiation facility where it is separated into clay, sand and concentrate streams. The concentrate product is utilized at the chemical plants to produce a wide range of products including fertilizer, industrial phosphates and animal feed products. The Cyclone Dike Builder (CDB) project developed a technique for dewatering the beneficiation tailing sand stream and providing innovative placement for dike construction. Future material balance requirements at the PCS Phosphate mine required an improvement in tailing sand placement technique to accomplish strategic objectives. The water volume of the sand slurry forces significant quantities of sand out of the dike profile during deposition. PCS Phosphate and MetPro Supply of Florida developed a mobile high-density hydro-cyclone station to remove most of the water and significantly increase the density of the sand being placed for dike construction. This high-density sand slurry is then effectively controlled using minimal heavy equipment operation.

"Mixed ground tunnels come in all kinds. In rock tunnels with possible faults and high pressure water, the challenges are many. With the advent of Crossover TBMs, contractors can minimize machine wear in such conditions while maximizing efficiency. The newest generation of Crossover is exemplified by two projects in Albania and Turkey. A 5.56 m Crossover TBM destined for Turkey’s Gerede Water Transmission will be assembled using Onsite First Time Assembly (OFTA) from within an existing tunnel. The unique machine will bore through 30 fault zones requiring the TBM to be sealable to up to 20 bar so pre-consolidation grouting can be done. If boring under pressure is required, the TBM will bore sequentially using the screw conveyor fore and aft gates. Skewing further towards hard rock, a unique 6.2 m diameter Double Shield TBM with Crossover features was designed for Albania’s Moglicë Headrace Tunnel. The machine features closure doors and a sealing system to contain inrushes of water until they can be grouted off. This paper will discuss the unique aspects of the Crossover designs, including their inception as based on past projects in difficult ground, and their utilization at the two current projects. INTRODUCTION Specialized tunnel boring machines have been made for years to tackle specific types of ground conditions. Traditional types of TBMs bore within a specific set of ground conditions. If a project is located in a competent granite face, then a Main Beam machine is a good solution. In soft ground, Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) machines are the method of choice. Years of experience and engineering advancements have made both types of machines fast and economical solutions for tunneling. Unfortunately not all ground conditions are a perfect swath of one material, and the need for a more diverse machine is apparent."

A mathematical model is presented which allows the free or hindered settling velocity to he calculated for any size or- shape particle in any fluid, and at any percent solids up to the maximum. The validity of the model is supported by comparing calculated velocities (or viscosities) with measured values for 1073 data points contained in 80 sets of data encompassing a range of Reynolds’ numbers, from 0.002 to 770.000. The average error was 0.69%, with an average standard deviation of 6.65%. The derivation of the model is too lengthy to include in this paper, which will specifically present the application of the model to the free settling of minerals and spheres, prediction of the friction factor in wind tunnel tests, the viscosity of suspensions of spheres, the hindered settling of mono-sized spheres and closely sized minerals, and the settling of large spheres in suspensions of small spheres.

Using pure albite and quartz minerals, the separation of albite from quartz using mixed cationic/anionic reagent schemes is assessed through Hallimond flotation, zeta potential and diffuse reflectance FTIR studies. The reagent schemes are tested in bench-scale flotation for the separation of albite from Greek Stefania feldspar ore. The single mineral flotation tests showed the feasibility of selective albite flotation from quartz at around pH 2 using a mixture of cationic diamine and anionic sulfonate collectors or a combined cationic-anionic collector of diamine-dioleate. In contrast to the selective flotation response of albite at pH 2, where albite is slightly negatively charged and quartz possess zero charge, the zeta potential and FTIR studies elucidate similar adsorption behavior of mixed collectors on both of the minerals. The infrared spectra not only showed the co-adsorption of anionic sulfonate or oleate with diamine on the surface but also showed that the diamine adsorption increases with the presence of anionic collector. The intrusion of anionic collector in between adjacent surface alkyl ammonium ions decreases electrostatic head-head repulsion, thereby increasing the diamine adsorption by increasing the hydrophobic tail-tail bonds. The discrepancy in the flotation and adsorption results at pH 2 is attributed to the coarse and fine size particles employed in these studies, respectively. The comparable adsorption on fine particles of albite and quartz at pH 2 is explained by the interaction of ammonium ions on silanol groups by hydrogen bonding besides electrostatic interactions. The bench-scale flotation results indeed showed that selective albite flotation takes place only after desliming the feed material. An albite concentrate exceeding 10% (by weight) Na20 is produced from a material containing about 6.5% (by weight) Na20, where an albite product of more than 9% (by weight) Na20 is considered to be valuable. INTRODUCTION The Carr Fork property is situated in the Bingham Mining District located on the east slope of the Oquirrh Mountain range in Utah. The mine is adjacent to and lies west of Kennecott's Bingham Pit some 25 miles southwest of Salt Lake City. The Bingham Mining District contains one of the largest copper reserves on North America. Mineralization is associated with the Bingham stock which intruded through some 16,000 feet of sedimentary formations. Mineralization and a1teration zoning was developed radially from the Bingham stock with lower grade disseminated copper mineralization centrally located in the stock and adjoining quartzites. In addition, several garnetized limestone beds abutting the stock were also well mineralized. These skarns will be Carr Fork's initial mining target. Of the several limestone beds, only two, the Yampa and the Highland Boy have significant commercial interest at present. These beds which are 50 feet to 150 feet thick and are separated by 200 to 400 feet of quartzite were highly folded, thrusted and faulted, resulting in a dip variance from 20" to vertical. The predominant dip, however, is between 20" and 45" from horizontal. Quartzites surrounding the limestone beds were subjected to the same degree of tectonic activity with resultant intense fracturing and stress relief. The limestone beds which have a higher elastic modulus and which also experienced fracture healing during mineralization appear to have greater competency and strength than the quartzites. Four shafts nominally 3500 feet deep will provide access to the mine which will be a highly mechanized trackless operation, designed to produce 14,000 tons per hoisting day. First production is scheduled for the last quarter of 1979.

"This work presents a method for the precipitation of cobalt sulfate by alcohols, specifically ethanol and methanol. The effect of the initial concentration of cobalt, the volumetric ratio of alcohol to cobalt sulfate solution, the addition of sulfuric acid and ammonia, and the effects of common ions on the precipitation percentage were investigated. The performances of ethanol and methanol were compared in terms of the precipitation percentage of cobalt sulfate, and explanations for different performances are offered. In the sulfate-based solution, the alcohol was shown to displace water ligands from the first coordination sphere of the cobalt(II) cations, which led to the precipitation of the cobalt ions as cobalt sulfate heptahydrate. SEM analysis revealed that the particle sizes of the powders produced by this method are smaller than those of commercially available cobalt sulfate. The scientific literature contains no data on the solubility of cobalt sulfate in ethanol. In this study, the solubility product constant (Ksp) for cobalt sulfate was experimentally calculated to be approximately 1.15 x 10-5.IntroductionCobalt sulfate, which is one of the most important compounds of cobalt, is used in the electroplating and electrochemical industries. The addition of cobalt sulfate to nickel-plating baths makes the treated metals brighter, harder, smoother and more ductile (Armstrong et al., 1988). It is also used as a desiccant for lithographic inks, varnishes, paints and linoleum, as well as in storage batteries, e.g., nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd) and lithium-ion (Li-ion) rechargeable batteries (Kang et al., 2010). Cobalt sulfate is employed as a coloring agent in ceramics, enamels and glazes to prevent discoloration and as a copigment for the decoration of porcelain. In addition, cobalt sulfate has been used in animal feeds as a mineral supplement (Budavari et al., 1996; Kirk and Othmer, 1999).In the past, brewers used cobalt sulfate to prolong the life of beer foam (Kesteloot et al., 1968). Ranchers have dosed livestock with cobalt sulfate or used fertilizer enriched with this mineral to ensure that their animals obtained sufficient amounts of the trace mineral, which is essential to the production of vitamin B12. Cobalt sulfate has also been used in veterinary medication to prevent and treat cobalt deficiency in ruminants, which causes a reduction in feed intake and body weight, accompanied by emaciation, anemia and debility.Cobalt sulfate is a water-soluble bivalent cobalt salt. Cobalt sulfate heptahydrate dehydrates entirely at 420° C, and the dehydrated salt forms red monoclinic crystals."

Ventilation and refrigeration strategies for the 3000/3500 orebodies, Mount Isa Mines, Australia were reviewed. The orebodies lie between 1,200 and 1,800 m below surface and are characterised by steep geothermal gradients, intensively mechanised stoping methods and high ambient air temperatures in summer. Providing acceptable working conditions under these situations is difficult and costly. The ventilation air quantity required in the 3000/3500 orebodies exceeds 550 m3/s when the production rate is greater than 2.5 million tonnes per year. The maximum quantity that can be supplied and exhausted using the existing intake and return ventilation system is estimated at about 630 m3/s. For production rates greater than 3 million tonnes per year, either new intake and return airways will need to be developed or innovative approaches such as controlled partial recirculation used. A description is given of technical and economic investigations conducted at Mount Isa into controlled partial recirculation. During these investigations, a major field trial of a controlled partial recirculation system was undertaken with results indicating that an acceptable working environment can be achieved practically and economically utilising this approach. The cost involved in controlled partial recirculation for supplying the required ventilation quantity when the production of 3000/3500 orebodies exceeds 3 million tonnes per year is examined. A cost comparison between recirculation and other conventional alternatives such as new surface shaft or underground booster fans is included. The results indicate that the option of a new surface shaft will incur a high initial capital cost and moderate annual operating costs. The alternative of underground booster fans will necessitate a moderate capital cost and very high operating costs. Controlled partial recirculation, in this case, offers both the lowest capital and operating costs of the three options evaluated.

Introduction Trying to synthesize innovations occurring in gold processing is not simple. At present, this technology is exploding, brought about by the high price of gold. This price has compelled the mining industry, as a matter of survival, to produce gold. The frantic search for gold deposits continues, from glacial areas to tropical jungles. The search has been fruitful. New exploration techniques have helped to locate deposits. Some are amenable to conventional processing techniques. Others are in unusual settings that challenge the ingenuity of extractive metallurgists. Ore deposits containing traces of invisible gold, refractory mineralization, and impurities and deleterious materials that previously defied treatment are now being profitably processed. Metallurgists have developed various processing methods and equipment for gold ore treatment that reflect differences in ore characteristics, grade, mineralogy, reserves, topography, climate, and location. These processes can be categorized as: • For nonrefractory or readily leachable gold ores - vat leaching, heap leaching, and agitation leaching. • For ores containing free gold - gravity concentration methods, followed by mercury amalgamation, and • For refractory gold ores - flotation, roasting, pressure oxidation, followed by cyanidation leaching. In actual practice, a combination of these processes may be required. This is because gold mineralization, although usually simple, may be associated with other mineral species or with clays that make the ore difficult to treat. Furthermore, after the gold has been solubilized to form a cyanide complex, one of two important processes must be applied to recover the gold. These ore zinc cementation (Merrill-Crow process) and Carbon adsorption, desorption, and electrowinning. New techniques for leaching and recovery are also advancing. These will become the bases for the next generation of gold processing plants. Nonrefractory Gold Ores Nonrefractory ores with readily leachable gold are among the .easiest to treat. Even so, non-refractory ores from epithermal deposits are likely to contain too much clay. When these ores are damp, they may clog the screens and cone crushers. Depending on the type of process, scrubbing the crushed ore is very effective in overcoming clay problems. After dewatering, the slimes enter the cyanidation process and the thickener overflow is stripped of gold values and recycled. Semiautogenous (SAG) mills are also gaining popularity due to lower capital costs and ability to treat wet, sticky ores. If properly sized, the secondary crushing and screening plants, together with a secondary ball mill, can be eliminated. When the ore is of such a low grade that it can not support fine grinding, vat or heap 'teaching may be applicable. These systems are being actively applied in the US and elsewhere. Rapid construction and low capital costs are important features of these plants. Vat leaching is ideally suited for fast leaching ores and small tonnage deposits located in areas with harsh winters or wet tropical climates. For effective vat leaching, the ore is crushed to less than 25 mm (1 in.), agglomerated with lime or cement to control fines, and leached with sodium cyanide solution (upflow or downflow). The major waste product of the alkaline extraction of alumina from bauxite [Bayer Process] is known as red-mud. Approximately, a ton of red-mud is produced for every two tons of bauxite mined. The red-mud produced from Jamaican bauxite is rich in hematite, alumina and titanium oxide. It has been shown that over 90-wt. pct. alumina can be recovered from red-mud by soda-ash sintering and caustic leaching. Hematite can be carbothermically reduced with a degree of metallization of over 94 pct resulting in attempts for magnetic separation. These separations are desirable in the notion that there is no waste product generated from this type of processing and consequently an opportunity for complete utilization of the waste material. Conversely, the pre-separated material could be charged through the tuyeres in an iron blast furnace or smelted to produce pig iron. If smelted, the concentration of titanium oxide in the slag will be significantly high justifying its recovery by established acid-leach process. This paper describes the results of alumina recovery and the plans for titanium oxide recovery from red-mud. In addition, the situation of ongoing efforts in iron extraction, particularly, the method of magnetic separation of the reduced material. The problems associated with the use of reduced red-mud as an alternative to direct-reduced iron [DRI] has also been discussed. Critical assessment of the recovery sequence chosen for the products has been described based on economics.

Basement rocks in southern Oklahoma are divided into two groups. One group is the Lower Cambrian Wichita Igneous Province, a diverse igneous suite that crops out in the western Arbuckle Mountains and in the Wichita Mountains. These largely bimodal igneous rocks were emplaced in an intracratonic-rift environment. The other group, the older, is a set of Precambrian rocks of the Eastern Arbuckle Province, yielding ages between 1,350 and 1,400 Ma, exposed in the core of the eastern Arbuckle Mountains. These are deeply eroded mesozonal granitic rocks and associated granitic gneisses cut by numerous dikes ranging in composition from diabase to rhyolite. The southern Oklahoma igneous rocks have long been utilized mostly as dimension and crushed stone. Most of the early quarries were in granite of various red hues for monuments and facing stones. Large crushed-stone quarries are now exploiting both granite and rhyolite, which is used chiefly as aggregate and railroad ballast. The exposed basement rocks in Oklahoma represent an underdeveloped and accessible resource.

Although manganese is a metallic element and is widely dispersed in nature, it never occurs except as a compound in combi¬nation with other elements. Use of such compounds in the production of glass is known to have occurred in early Egypt. The dioxide of manganese was considered a compound of iron until 1774 when C.W. Schule first recognized it as an element. In the same year, a Swedish mining engineer, J.G. Gahn, became the first to isolate manganese. In 1856 development of the Bessemer process of steelmaking gave economic importance to manganese, and later, in 1882 Robert Hadfield discovered the benefits of high manganese steels. GEOLOGY Physical Properties Elemental manganese is a silver-gray metal, resembling iron but harder and more brittle and used primarily in alloys (both ferrous and non-ferrous) and a wide variety of chemical compounds. Some of the physical properties of manganese include: melting point¬1 245°C; boiling point-2 150°C; density at 20°C-7.43 g/cm3; specific heat at 25.2°C-O.115 cal/g; latent heat of fusion-63.7 cal/g; hardness on Mohs scale-5.0; linear coefficient of thermal expansion from 0 to 100°C-22 x 10-6. Mineralogy There are over one hundred minerals that contain manganese. These minerals vary from those with compositions that are pre¬dominantly manganese to those having only minor percentages of manganese. Distribution of Deposits Manganese ore deposits are found worldwide and were formed in various geological environments, but only a rather limited num¬ber of deposits have high grade manganese ore in sufficient quan¬tities to be mined and utilized economically on an industrial scale. It is worth noting the fact that almost all of the significant deposits can be classified into two types of deposits: marine chemical sed¬imentary deposits, and residual (secondary) enrichment deposits. There are, however, a much larger number of geological types but these are not of commercial significance at this time. Sedimentary deposits are the most common and are usually stratiform or lenticular. Manganese minerals were formed by a chemical process during the deposition of marine sediments. They usually contain manganese oxides and carbonate minerals, some¬times interbedded together or with other sedimentary rocks such as limestone or shale. Examples of this type of deposit are the Russian ore bodies of Nikopol and Tchiatoura, as well as the Kalahari deposits in South Africa and deposits of Groote Elyandt in Aus¬tralia. Residual deposits were formed in a different way: by alteration of existing manganese deposits or by concentration of the manga¬nese minerals when other minerals were washed away by weath¬ering or ground water processes. The Nsuta deposit in Ghana, the Amapa deposit in Brazil, the Moanda deposit in Gabon, and nodules in the residual clays of the US Southern Appalachians are examples of this type of geological process. In the case of the Ghana and the Amapa deposits, this is only true for the outer layers of the deposit containing oxide minerals, the inner part being comprised of car¬bonate minerals including manganese carbonate, probably from marine origin. Some sedimentary and residual-type deposits have been metamorphosed, giving rise to small high grade ore bodies. These deposits are regionally metamorphosed, occurring in mar¬bles, slates, quartzites, schists, and gneisses. Some of these deposits, such as the Franklin, NJ, deposit are rich enough to be commercial without secondary enrichment; however, most of the exploitable deposits have been secondarily enriched. Due to the diversity and complexity of manganese deposits, both with respect to deposition and chemistry, a wide range of impurities are almost invariably present in the ores. Table 1 shows that the reserves (i.e., a measured resource that can be economically and legally extracted) are estimated at 814 x 106 tons of contained Mn, which equates to more than a 100 year supply at the current level of production. The reserve base is made up of the marginally economic reserves and sub-economic re¬sources and are some 4.5 times greater than the proven reserves. Also apparent from study of Table I is the fact that some 75% of manganese reserves are found in two countries, the USSR and South Africa. On the other hand, North America (i.e., the United States and Canada) have few significant deposits. When longwall equipment is being specified, a nominal capacity is generally given on which to base the design of the various face and out-bye systems and components. This capacity generally comes from a nominal annual capacity requirement based on realistic utilization rates. From illustrative examples of simple system simulation, this paper sets out to show that a single nominal capacity is not sufficient to size the different systems. The manner in which the Longwall is operated and the overall system configuration and availability can have a significant impact on overall productivity.

Mining of thin coal seams is both difficult and uneconomical. As a result, most of thin-seam coal reserves in the U. S. are not being mined. It is estimated that nearly 910 Gt (K. Unrug, 1985) of coal reserves exist in 355 to 710 mm thick seams. The Bureau is attempting to develop new techniques for mining 150 to 1065 mm thick coal seams. This paper summarizes the research work on existing thin-seam mining techniques, testing on small and full scale physical models of the Bureau slot mining concept, and computer modeling of the full-scale process.
